READY FOR ADVENTURE?

What kind of romance stories do you enjoy? I like stories that have a good romance but also something to put the main characters in jeopardy. I don’t want anything too bad to happen to them, but there has to be the chance of perilous circumstances.
BRIDE’S ADVENTURE, Loving A Rancher book 4, is one of my favorite of my stories. Amelia Douglas is daring and intelligent. Readers were introduced to her in MURDOCH’S BRIDE, in which she was one of the stranded travelers on the Murdoch ranch near Cottonwood Springs, Montana.
After the death of her husband in Chicago, Amelia’s in-laws with whom she and her husband had lived asked her to leave immediately. Fortunately, her brother Charlie in Oregon tells her to come there and stay with him. Being stranded in a snowstorm en route was an adventure, but nothing like she finds when she gets to Salem, Oregon.
After a couple of daring stunts, Amelia realizes she is pushing her luck and endangering her brother, so she returns to Cottonwood Springs. The adventure doesn’t end there, though.
This book was one of Debra Holland’s Montana Sky Series for Kindle World. Now that Amazon has deleted the Kindle World program, the rights have reverted to me. If you haven’t read this book, I hope you’ll order it. It's available as an e-book and in print and is also in KU.
If you read it previously, please leave a review. When Amazon deleted the Kindle World program, they also deleted all the reviews.

Here’s an excerpt of BRIDE’S ADVENTURE:
A silvery-gray sky greeted Amelia when she left the train in Salem. She spotted her brother’s tall form and hair the same blond shade as her own. She waved and a big smile split his face as he hurried toward her. Charlie looked good until he was closer and she became aware of lines furrowing his forehead and at the corners of his blue eyes.
His hug lifted her off her feet. “You look even prettier than I remembered.”
She laughed with joy and the relief of seeing him again, “You’re as silver-tongued as ever. I’m so glad to see you. Even though I’m a Douglas now, we’re all that’s left of the Baxter family and I want us to always remain close.”
“We will, Sis.” He squeezed her shoulders and gestured to a man beside him. “This is Tony Ward. He and I work together and share a house, but there’s plenty of room for you. Tony, this is my sister, Mrs. Amelia Douglas.”
The handsome man was tall and well-dressed. His dark hair and brown eyes were a contrast to her brother as he bowed slightly. “My pleasure, Mrs. Douglas. Charlie has spoken of you often.” His accent reminded her of Chicago, but not quite—maybe further east.
She linked her arm with that of her brother. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Ward. I’m excited to finally be here.”
The man nodded at the valise she’d set at her feet. “If you give me your check, I’ll get the rest of your luggage.”
She fished the claim ticket from her purse. “How kind of you, Mr. Ward. Mine is a brown trunk. While you do that, I need to send a wire.”
As his friend claimed her trunk, Charlie stuck by her side to the telegraph operator’s desk. She sent a telegram to Charity letting her know she’d arrived.
Her brother glanced over his shoulder at Tony. “Play along with whatever I say and don’t divulge any details of your plans. Tony’s always watching and listening but I’ll try to explain later.”
Her breath caught as a vice clamped around her chest. Her earlier fears were justified. A dozen questions popped into her mind, but Charlie’s expression silenced her.
He kissed her cheek and whispered. “Don’t be afraid, only extra cautious and act naïve.”
Hardly reassured, she wondered what had happened to her brother. Whatever the problem, it involved Mr. Ward. She forced a smile for the man as he and a porter approached with her trunk on a cart.

CLUTCH!

Don't miss the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of the post!

Clutch
by
Lisa Becker

Genre: Chick-Lit, Romantic Comedy

**Winner of the best romantic comedy for the 2018 American Fiction Awards!
**
Now with five new bonus chapters *

Clutch is
the laugh-out-loud, chick lit romance chronicling the dating
misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who
compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of
handbags – the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag”
single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc.

With her best friend, bar owner Mike by her side, the overly-accommodating
Caroline drinks a lot of Chardonnay, puts her heart on the line,
endures her share of unworthy suitors and finds the courage to
discover the “Clutch” or someone she wants to hold onto.

CLUTCH Excerpt

Mimi Johnson was casually dressed in a brightly-colored blouse with enormous turquoise jewelry and equally-oversized glasses. Despite that largesse, the only thing truly bigger than her personality (and her bosom) was her handbag. Always perfectly matched to her clothing, shoes, and jewelry, she was like a walking Chico’s advertisement, if you added forty years, forty pounds, and a Virginia Slims cigarette. From her Mary Poppins-like bag, she pulled out a box, impeccably-wrapped in glossy pink paper with a white grosgrain ribbon bow. A cigarette teetered between her two fingers while she produced a lung-hacking cough.

“Open it… …sweetie. Open it,” she said to her seven-year-old great niece, Caroline, a beautiful and vibrant girl with long blonde hair and oversized blue eyes.

Alive with anticipation, sweet young Caroline eagerly took the box and smiled up at Mimi. She gingerly removed the ribbon, planning to save it for later. The glossy paper was of less interest and she ripped through it quickly. She opened the box and gently lifted out a hot pink purse, adorned with pale pink flowers and rhinestones. An enormous smile overcame her. Caroline nearly set her own hair on fire from Mimi’s cigarette as she bounded into her aunt’s arms.

“Oh, thank you, Aunt Mimi. It’s lovely.”

And that was when Caroline’s love of handbags began. From big and loud ones that would make Mimi proud to unimposing wristlets, from bowler bags to satchels; it didn’t matter if they were made of canvas or calf-skin leather, were distressed or embellished with metal studs. Hell, she didn’t care if you called them pocketbooks or purses. She just loved them all – almost as much as she loved Mimi.

By the time she was a junior in high school and well on her way to being class valedictorian, it was the hundreds of bags Caroline owned that helped her conceptualize her ticket out of her suffocating small Georgian town. She would design handbags. And it was Mimi who was her steadfast cheerleader.

“Caroline, sweetie… …you find something you love and you just hold onto it.” It had never mattered if Caroline was asking Mimi’s advice about a friend, lover, or career. The advice was always the same: “Find something you love and hold onto it.”

Mimi’s words ever-present in her mind, Caroline headed to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and spent four years in Los Angeles learning everything there was to know to pursue her passion. Then, right out of college, she spent three years working in the design and marketing departments of two of the world’s leading, high-end handbag designers.

She was schooled in beauty and how to accessorize the perfectly-coiffed women on the way to their Botox appointments. But Caroline was pulled by the nagging feeling that the very person who had inspired her career, Mimi, could never afford the bags she designed, even if Caroline used her generous employee discount on Mimi’s behalf. And God forbid Mimi would ever accept one as a gift, always preferring to give rather than receive. But Caroline believed there was no reason for anyone to be denied the ultimate in accessories. She saw an untapped market of designing beautiful and affordable bags, but she just wasn’t sure she was start-up potential. Again, it was Mimi who nudged her to learn the business side of things and apply to MBA programs. When Caroline was accepted to Harvard Business School, Mimi, of course, encouraged her.

“You’ve got this, sweetie,” she said. “It’s in the bag.”

Lisa Becker is a romance writer who spends her time like she spends her
money - on books and margaritas.  In addition to Clutch: a
novel, she is the author of the Click trilogy, a contemporary romance
series about online dating and Links, a standalone, second chance
romance readers.  As Lisa’s grandmother used to say, “For
every chair, there’s a tush.” Lisa is now happily married to a
wonderful man she met online and lives in Manhattan Beach, California
with him and their two daughters. So, if it happened for her, there’s
hope for anyone! You can share your love stories with her

General Interview Q&A with Lisa Becker

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I'm a romance writer who spends her time like she spends her money – on margaritas and books. In addition to my romantic comedy novels, which reviewers call clever, hilarious, sexy and smart, I’ve written bylined articles and participated in interviews about relationships, online dating and romance for a range of media including Reader’s Digest, Mind Body Green, Cupid’s Pulse, The Perfect Soulmate and TV Grapevine. My grandmother used to say, “For every chair, there’s a tush.” I’m now happily married to a wonderful man I met online and live in Manhattan Beach, California with him and our two daughters. So, if it happened for me, there’s hope for anyone!

Tell us about your most recent release.

A light-hearted, second chance romance, LINKS explores what happens when nerdy girl Charlotte reconnects with her unrequited schoolgirl crush, star athlete Garrett, 15 years after high school.

Did you have an unrequited crush in high school?

I'm not too ashamed to admit I had such a fierce crush on a boy, I willingly sat with him in the bathroom at parties while he puked up wine coolers, just so I could spend time with him. Thankfully, that soul-crushing time in my life is over, but I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if I came upon that secret crush today as a confident, successful woman.

One of your books is based on how you met your husband. Can you tell us more about that?

I'm most known for the Click trilogy comprised of CLICK: AN ONLINE LOVE STORY, DOUBLE CLICK, and RIGHT CLICK, which is loosely inspired by how I met my husband. The series follows a young woman's search for love online in Los Angeles with the entire series unfolding in emails between our heroine, her friends and her hilarious dates. Fraught with BCC's, FWD's and inadvertent Reply to All's, readers will cheer, laugh, cry and cringe following the email exploits of Renee and friends. And ultimately, they will root for Renee to "click" with the right man.

What is next for you?

This spring, I will re-release a novel I published several years ago called CLUTCH. The re-release includes five new chapters, a new cover and audiobook. It is a laugh-out-loud romance chronicling the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of handbags (the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc.) as she searches for the “Clutch” or someone she wants to hold onto.

Is CLUTCH also inspired by your real life?

When I was writing the Click trilogy I was obsessed with NCIS re-runs and would have the show on in the background as I wrote. There was an episode where a character refers to a man as a “handbag husband,” or something useless you carry on your arm. I started thinking about that, and the idea for CLUTCH grew from there. I believe that everyone deserves a happily ever after and would like to think there’s a “clutch,” or someone worth holding onto, out there for everyone.

If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles?

I think Eloise Mumford, who played Kate in Fifty Shades of Grey, would make an outstanding Caroline. She has the right mixture of warmth, gumption, vulnerability, and beauty to bring this character to life. I still can’t decide who would play Mike, although I know I’d love to sit in on those casting sessions. ;)

At the end of your life, when it is all said and done, what would you want your tombstone to read?

Here lies Lisa Willet Becker – a great wife, mother, friend and citizen who wrote books and movies people loved.

GRACE'S KISS

GRACE'S KISS
Romantic Suspense/Psychological Thriller
By
Karen Tjebben
Date Published: September 2018

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Grace followed the rules. She always played it safe and never put her heart in jeopardy. Until the night she met Ryan. She’d never imagined that she could connect with an alpha male like him. Giving herself to him as he'd cradled her in his arms came naturally... until she sobered up. He was everything that she’d convinced herself she didn’t need. Or was he everything she needed?

Ryan balanced on a thin line of gray. He’d killed his share of demons but managed to live at peace with his actions. Then he met Grace, a woman who pushed all his buttons and shook him to his core. The need to have her overwhelmed him, but she kept shooting him down. Could he convince her that he was exactly what she needed?

GRACE'S KISS Excerpt:

Turning his torso so that he faced her, he asked, “May I kiss you?” Normally, he didn’t formally ask a woman for permission to kiss her. He just went by the feel of the moment. But Grace was skittish, and he didn’t want to rush her.

She knew they’d kissed on the dance floor. Heck, she’d rubbed her body against his in a shameful way as she’d groped him. But the way he asked her to kiss him, like he respected her, warmed her heart. With nerves whirring through her, she nodded and said, “Yes.”

The soft, whisper reply warmed Ryan’s heart in a way he hadn’t expected. He wanted to pound his chest in a proud display of masculinity. She was giving him her trust, putting herself out there for him, and he appreciated that honor.

Ryan leaned towards her, looking for any hesitation or concern on her part, but there was none. The trust and innocence in her expression stirred a desire in him that he hadn’t felt before. He’d experienced passion in a sexual sense, but now a different type of passion heated him. This passion didn’t radiate from his cock. It wasn’t lust based. This passion radiated from his heart and mind and flooded his body. Grace didn’t casually give herself to men, so her affections were so much more valuable than she even realized. He liked that purity. He could see himself with her in a long-term relationship.

As he pressed a hand against her cheek, his thumb brushed over her lips. Her heart fluttered at the tender caress. She quickly licked her lips in anticipation and then felt his lips against hers. Heat washed over her that nothing to do with the hot, humid evening of a summer in the South. This was a heat that was stirred through passion and went right to her core.

She wanted more of him, tracing the seam of his lips with her tongue, she urged him to take the kiss further. He didn’t disappoint. The little boat rocked as he repositioned his body for a better angle to continue the kiss. His tongue slipped into her mouth and caressed hers in an erotic dance. Her girl parts woke up and moistened. The ease and pleasure of his kiss assured her that sex with him would be equally pleasurable. Where had that thought come from? They wouldn’t be having sex anytime soon, despite the need surging through her body.

When he pulled away, he’d left her panting and with a pulsing need between her legs that Daniel had never stirred up. She adjusted in her seat, wishing she could beg him for another kiss. Did he feel the same desire in his own body?

“I like you, Grace,” he said. He wanted to kiss her again. Hell, he wanted to take her back to his place and make love to her, but he knew that would be rushing her. If Daniel was telling the truth, and she’d only had sex with him, then she wasn’t the type to have sex after a first date. That was okay with him.

He knew they’d have more dates, and she’d eventually have sex with him after one of them. He only needed to wait her out.

A WAR OF HEARTS AND A SEA OF SMOKE

A WAR OF HEARTS

Jake was waiting outside the little cafe on East 8th Street. When he saw her heading towards him, her face lit up with a bright smile, it brought out a sense of urgency in him. Unable to wait, he ran over, taking her hands, holding them tightly. They stood immobilized in the middle of the busy sidewalk, looking into each other’s eyes, oblivious to the herds of people swarming past them.
"Hey," she finally said, breaking the trance.
"I'm glad you came.” He touched her face, then kissed her. His hand settled on her back, guiding her out of the way of two oncoming bicyclists. "Are you hungry?"
His eyes seemed to penetrate her soul—they were so dazzling, deep, compassionate. She studied his face, committing it to memory. Especially those delicious lips. Dazed, she couldn't think straight.
"I'm not sure..." She shrugged with a shy grin.
"Let's go in. We can find a booth in the back.” For the second day in a row, the twinkle in his eyes was back after a long hiatus. His fingers laced through hers, tight and protective, as they strolled into the dimly lit cafe.
Pulsating indie rock music filled the air. The place was packed, but they finally found a booth close to the back door. He slid next to her, their thighs pressing together. It wasn't satisfying enough for either of them. They moved in closer.
After the waitress took their order, Jake concentrated on Kristen’s face, his fingers tenderly touching the black and blue bruise on her cheek. "I noticed this outside. What happened?" His hand dropped to lay upon hers.
She looked down, avoiding those dark, dreamy eyes. What can I tell him when he doesn’t even know I’m involved with anyone, let alone married?

"The author's "blurb" does not do this book justice. Holy Smoke what an absolutely crazy ride I just finished reading. The ups and downs, the back and forth AND the sideways!!!!! Love, hate and hate to love and everything in between." - Lisa - 4*

BOOK 2 - A SEA OF SMOKE:

“This book begins a few months after the first book ended. The drama hits you like a sledge hammer from page one!… the gritty realism in this novel will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time! I couldn’t put it down until I knew what happened next!! I absolutely loved all the drama and back and forth made for a quick read. ” — Katy R. 5*

"Book 1 was good, but OMG (I can't say that enough) book 2 just, at a loss of words to describe how good it was. This book is the definition of "psychological thriller”…

HOT TIDE SERIES

Don't miss the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of the post!

Another Shot With Summer
Hot Tide Book 1
by
Michele De Winton

Genre:
Contemporary Romantic Comedy

He broke her heart like a cheap surfboard…can he win her back?

After an accident stole his surfing career, Ashton Evans has a chance to
reinvent his life by photographing the leaders of the World Surfing
League. The problem? Summer Roberts is his first client. Now the
woman he can’t forget is spending long, hot Indonesian days in
front of his lens. In a bikini. And worse, she’s steaming up his nights.

But no matter how tempting Summer is, Ashton must keep his hands to
himself. For the sake of her career, Summer is pretending she’s
still in a relationship with someone else. Being seen with Ashton
could blow her chance at making it onto the World Surfing League
leader board for good. But with their attraction as unstoppable as
one of the giant ocean waves that rule their lives, will they be
tumbled under by it? Or will Ashton finally get his second shot with Summer?

Get ready for a wet, hot ride.

ANOTHER SHOT WITH SUMMER Excerpt

The photographer had suggested using the very end of Grumari Beach for their shoot, and now Summer could see why. Part of an environmental reserve about fifteen miles from the main sand bar and shops, it had a deserted island feel, although nowhere in Brazil could strictly be called deserted. She headed over to where a man moved around a stack of camera equipment, his back to her.

“I thought about doing something more urban. You know, with the backdrop of Rio to spice up the image, but it seemed wrong. If the client really wants sun-kissed, this is about as sun-kissed as it gets.”

Summer froze. That voice. And then the photographer stood from where he’d been partially hidden behind his gear. The full impact of Maya’s text sunk in.

“You!” Summer’s heart swelled to twice its usual size, and she felt the blood beating all the way up to her ears. Ashton. The man whose picture she’d kept under her pillow as a teenager, and the man who had haunted her loneliest moments as a young woman. The bastard.

“Oh. She said she’d squared it away with you. She pulled a fast one on both of us, huh?”

“Don’t worry. The cab can’t have got far. I’ll just call him back.”

Ashton caught her arm as she swiveled to leave, and she tried to pull free as if he’d stung her. Her reaction to his touch was the same as when she’d been a teenager. Hot, firm, sending her senses into sharp overdrive, his fingers made her skin burn. These were feels she was not ready to feel again.

He dropped his hand, and there was an awkward moment where they looked at each other, frozen, and Summer realized he felt it, too. His face was shocked, his eyes wide. The moment grew longer, her breath catching in her throat as she waited, unsure of what to do next.

Then his pupils returned to normal, and his face softened. “We’re here now, and the light is about to turn. Maya’s told the client I’m on the job, so I need to get the shots. I’ll just be the photographer. Everything else…” He waved his hand between them. “It’s history. Ancient history.”

She felt his gaze on her a moment longer than was strictly necessary. She brushed at her face, as if trying to get the sensation of him off her skin. Then her awe turned to anger. “I guess it is all about you, after all. Wouldn’t want you missing out on keeping your new client happy.”

“That’s not what I meant. Shit.” He rubbed his chin. “This is not how I wanted to see you again after so long.” He looked about as if trying to find a distraction and came up empty. “I’m a different guy behind the camera. I promise.”

She kicked the sand and wished the extra freckles the sun had added to her face today would fade instantly. Nothing like freckles to make a girl feel like a girl, instead of a woman. You are not a girl.
Be the bigger person.

There was an awkward pause. She straightened. “Fine,” she said. That was all she was going to give him. Short, calm, professional.

Making Over Maya
Hot Tide Book 2

This Cinderella isn't supposed to end up with the Wolfe.

Maya Taylor is all sass and style when it comes to closing a PR deal, but
when it comes to men, she has about as much witty banter as a
drowning grommet. So when fashion mogul, Dominic Wolfe, enters her
life, he seems to be bringing the perfect deal.

She’ll teach him all there is to know about the highly competitive side of
surf sponsorship. And in return, Dominic will turn the beautiful
surf-klutz into a man-magnet. Dream deal, right?

Only the lessons start getting hotter than the beach mid-summer and
Dominic realizes he wants more. Much more. But the deal was their
relationship wouldn’t cross the line between business and pleasure…

Michele DeWinton

It's no wonder that Michele's first romance has a little sparkle of the
stage tucked into its pages as she was a performer long before she
got addicted to the page. Being a writer was not what she was supposed
to be when she 'grew up' but then neither was a dancer. Her poor
parents. They thought that when she toddled off to law school they'd
bred a responsible, useful adult and instead they got a performer and word junkie.

She now writes full time in a studio surrounded by the whisper of wind in the trees
and only intermittent interruptions from her young son, husband and
hunger pangs. She's based in New Zealand (land of beaches and
hobbits) loves chocolate, yoga, sunshine, her boys and happy endings.

SLASHING MONA LISA

Don't miss the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of this post!

Slashing Mona Lisa
by
D.M. Barr

Genre:
Mystery, Romantic Suspense

Killer body or body killer? When fat shaming backfires…

Most people are dying to lose a few pounds. Not so in
Slashing Mona Lisa,
where it's the weight-loss advocates who are losing their lives.

Whenever Terry Mangel's body acceptance revival meeting rolls into town, local
diet execs and "fat shamers" turn up dead, often in
grotesque, ironic ways. All single murders in small suburbs, no one's
noticed the pattern…until now.

Rookie journalist Camarin Torres is a crusader against discrimination,
partially to assuage the guilt she feels over the suicide of her
obese, bullied twin sister. She reluctantly accepts a job offered by
handsome publisher Lyle Fletcher, a widower with a vendetta, who sees
Torres as salvation for
Trend,
his fledgling fashion magazine. Torres, however, detests everything
the publication stands for, and joins solely to transform its
judgmental, objectifying content.

As an unexpected romance blossoms, the overconfident, justice-hungry
reporter defies orders and infiltrates Mangel's world—only to find
herself in the crosshairs of a vigilante group targeting the
sixty-billion-dollar diet industry. Unmasking the killer may save her
life but shatter her heart: every clue seems to implicate Fletcher,
her mercurial mentor and lover, as the group's mastermind.

With a sassy, snarky voice and multi-cultural overtones,
Slashing Mona Lisa
explores body shaming and its victims: the disenfranchised who don't conform
to society's arbitrary norms, and the lengths they will go to for
love and acceptance.

Content Warning: contains some strong language,
violence, and explicit sexual scenes

SLASHING MONA LISA – EXCERPT

"Mr. Fletcher, I'd be happy to help with the copyediting," Camarin said. "But if I can safely prove to you that there's something more behind the Blubber Be Gone murder, without going out and personally putting myself in harm's way, would you consider a piece on the possible implications behind it?"

Fletcher shook his head and laughed.

"Camarin, you strike me as a persistent young lady, and it's clear you're not easily dissuaded. Hans Wynan must approve all copy decisions. Do you honestly think you can investigate this subtly, without letting him know you're not giving him a hundred percent of your attention?"

"I do."

"Okay, let's keep this just between us for now. I'd like you to work up a preliminary outline of the story you propose. Get it to me by Friday?"

Camarin smiled her first big smile of the day. Inside, she was performing mental cartwheels. "I'd be delighted to, Mr. Fletcher."

"Camarin, I do have one problem with you."

"You do?" Her high-flying elation took a sudden nosedive.

"Yes, and I'm only going to say this once. Please call me Lyle."

She took a deep breath. "Lyle…it just doesn't feel right. You're my boss, and in the Chamorro culture, we pay profound respect to—"

"The elderly?"

She was about to apologize, to tell him that she was referring to supervisors, when she caught the evil glimmer in his eyes and realized he was just kidding with her. Emboldened by her big win of the day, she ignored her dead sister Monaeka's voice telling her to play it safe, that a handsome man of stature would never be interested in a girl like her, and instead her impulsive streak took over. She decided to take a gamble.

"If I was indicating you were elderly, you'd definitely know it," she countered, echoing the line he'd used the day they'd met.

"Oh, how so?"

"You really want to know?"

Fletcher nodded.

She stood up, silently begging her knees not to buckle underneath her, and shot a look backward to ensure the door was closed. Then she walked around the desk until she was standing at Fletcher's side.

"Give me your hand."

Fletcher held out his right arm. Locking her gaze with his, Camarin grasped his palm, bowed her head slightly, lifted the back of his hand to her nose and sniffed deeply. The sweet-soapy-musky tones of Tabac romanced her olfactory glands, reminding her of summers spent at Macy's, selling men's fragrances.

"This custom is called nginge'," she explained. "Elders are considered manåmko', and those who are considered to hold wisdom are called mañaina. When we sniff the back of your hand, it is our way of taking in the essence of your spirit while expressing respect and honor."

"Really? Hmmm," he said softly, the words smooth as lip gloss, his eyes never wavering from her.
The heat emanating from their clasped hands hinted at secrets yet unspoken.

"Yes. And I would curtsy slightly, like this, and since you are a man—"

"I am indeed a man," he murmured.

Camarin felt herself blushing but persevered. "Since you are a man, I would say ñot, and you would say—" She felt him squeeze her hand as they continued their unbroken stare.

"I would say…"

She paused, lightheaded, the air suddenly as thin as atop Mt. Baldy back home. "You would say dioste ayudi, which means—"

At that moment, there was a loud knock on the door. Startled, Camarin pulled away just as Hans barged inside.

"Lyle, I need your approval on the Have You Heard? seg—oh, Camarin, I didn't realize you were in here."

"I-I was just leaving." She grabbed at her pad and pen but hit the edge of the ballpoint instead, sending it careening through the air and crash-landing in a corner by the window. Klutz! "Thanks again, Mr.…L-Lyle," she stammered and practically slammed into Wynan as she made a beeline for the door.

Once outside, she leaned against the wall, trying to ignore Monaeka's laughter at her failed attempt at flirtation, her heart pounding as loud and fast as a native drumbeat.

"Pitch giving you trouble, Cam?" asked Rachel as she passed, her hands filled with office supplies.

"Excuse me?" she answered, still disoriented from whatever that was.

"Pitch and toss. Boss."

"Oh, no, nothing like that. I was just—" Camarin's cellphone started vibrating, interrupting her thought. She pulled it from her pocket and, hand quivering, put it up to her ear. "Yes?"

"You were saying, which means…"

Her knees grew weak again. Fletcher had her private number?

Camarin turned away from Rachel and whispered into the phone, "Which means God help you."

"Ah. Well, considering our upcoming plans to turn this magazine around, I'd say, He'd better help us both."

D. M. Barr, Author

INTERVIEW WITH D. M. BARR

What was the inspiration for this current novel?
I noticed that two different camps target those who feel they are overweight. One camp is the traditional weight loss industry but the other is the group of “experts” telling the overweight they’re fine just the way they are—as long as they pay thousands to read books and attend seminars that reinforce this fact. It seems that hope and validation are the most expensive items for sale. That’s the premise of Slashing Mona Lisa.

Where did the title “Slashing Mona Lisa” come from?
In my twenties, I was skinny (I always have gone up and down in weight) and was dating a Scotsman in the travel industry. I warned him that I had a tendency to gain weight. He responded, “Don’t do that, it would be like slashing the Mona Lisa.” I broke up with him shortly afterwards. One of the characters in this novel repeats that line verbatim and it encapsulates my feelings about how some people sum up a person’s entire worth by numbers on the scale.

Have you suffered any of the weight angst that your characters experience in the book?
I’ve traveled the road between size 2 and size 16 many times in my life and I’ve known men who were kind and friendly to me when skinny and avoided me like the plague when I gained weight. I think a lot of the angst is self-inflicted however, thanks to a mother who in many ways, was like Ana in the book, very concerned about a daughter’s weight over everything else. I have tried very hard not to repeat that mistake with my children.

Are there similarities between the characters in this book and your last novel?
I am noticing some recurrent themes in my books, so novel writing has become an affordable form of psychoanalysis! My books always seem to have a girl tied to a bed, though the reasons are very different in each book. They also have complicated mother-daughter relationships. Both books have LGBTQ characters but Slashing Mona Lisa is far more multi-cultural. And I think both novels reflect my past—in Expired Listings, my life as a Realtor and my friendships with people in the BDSM scene and in Slashing Mona Lisa, my feelings as a yoyo dieter, my friends in the world of dueling piano bars and my fascination with Cockney rhyming slang.

Why is your main character Chamorro in Slashing Mona Lisa?
I needed a heroine whose family had roots in tribal religions, who might believe that an epileptic or overweight person could be possessed by the devil. The exorcism scene was key to the storyline. But there is a lot of multi-culturalism in Slashing Mona Lisa—Chamorro, British, Jamaican, African-American, Asian as well as characters from the LGBQT community. It’s a true reflection of living in NYC.

How long does it take for you to write a book?
Anywhere from one month to ten years! Not to sound glib but my first book actually took ten years, on and off. With this one, I signed up for NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month, in November 2017, and pledged to write 50,000 words in 30 days. I ended up writing 65,000 which I added to the 9,000 I started with. During the editing phase, it grew to 86,000+. That daily discipline worked wonders!

Do you know the ending before writing your books?
When I started this book, I had three different potential storylines, each with a different killer. The ending that made the cut was a compromise between two of those storylines. I can’t say more without revealing too much except to say that romances and side plots often develop as I write. I have no control over what my characters do or their sometimes-crude language. I apologize on their behalf.

What's next for you?
My next novel will be more of a contemporary romance unless I manage to stick in a murder or two. Since I try to explore issues in my books, this one will tackle elder abuse.

WHO IS D.M. BARR?

By day, a mild-mannered salesperson, wife, mother, rescuer of senior
shelter dogs, competitive trivia player and author groupie, happily
living just north of New York City. By night, an author of sex,
suspense and satire.

My background includes stints in travel marketing, travel journalism,
meeting planning, public relations and real estate. I was, for a long
and happy time, an award-winning magazine writer and editor. Then
kids happened. And I needed to actually make money. Now they're off
doing whatever it is they do (of which I have no idea since they
won't friend me on Facebook) and I can spend my spare time weaving
tales of debauchery and whatever else tickles my fancy.

The main thing to remember about my work is that I am NOT one of my
characters. For example, as a real estate broker, I've never played
Bondage Bingo in one of my empty listings or offed anyone at my local
diet clinic.

But that's not to say I haven't wanted to...
