Excerpt

(Hugo is almost four and calls Orlena by the abbreviated Orla)

Hugo held out a drawing with strange markings. “See, Orla. I drew a horse.”

She accepted the scratches he’d made. “I see, Hugo. I had no idea you were an artist. Give me your paint crayon so you can see what Cody has for you.”

Hugo turned to Cody, who’d squatted eye level with him. “I heard about a boy who loves horses. Do you know who that could be?”

Hugo put his hand on his chest. “I do. I love horses.”

Cody untied the string and pulled it from the package before handing it to Hugo. “See if this is something you’d like.”

Hugo quickly peeled away the brown paper to reveal the wooden horse on wheels. His eyes were round as he held the toy with both hands.

“A horse!” He hugged Cody, almost toppling him.

Wearing an odd expression, Cody sat on the floor watching as Hugo dropped beside him and rolled the horse along the braided rug.

Hugo glanced over his shoulder. “Look, Orla, Cody gibbed me a horse.”

“It’s grand. Did you remember the special words?” She suspected the hug meant more than mere words.

Hugo glanced at Cody. “Thank you.” He returned to his play.

Orlena watched him bumping over the rug’s coiled braid. “Your horse will roll more easily if you move off the rug.”

Cody watched the boy also. “Maybe the horse is traveling on hills.”

She sent him what she hoped was a scornful stare. “Thanks for your support.”

He ignored the glare and smiled. “Always happy to be of help.”

“You won’t be so glib when the rug is damaged.”

He lay back on the rug and crossed his arms beneath his head. “You think a child’s horse will ruin it? Ah, well, no matter. My wife will braid another, I’m sure.”

She leaned forward. “Oh, are you? And what makes you think your wife knows how to do such things?”

His bright blue eyes looked at her. Though he grinned, his eyes gave the impression he was serious. “I get the feeling she can do anything she sets her mind to.”

Excerpt

Jillie glanced up from the pot of chili and froze. The back door softly closed, and Mack pushed into the mudroom. She watched as he parked his hat on the bench beside the back door and hung his coat next to hers in the closet, then strolled into the kitchen.

This feels a little too cozy. “What the hell?” she said. “I thought you’d gone.”

He tossed her a sarcastic grin as he approached the kitchen island. “Nope. I’m here. At least for the night. Guess we both need to get used to it.”

“Why?”

“Weather and other stuff.”

“Is it that bad?”

He ignored her. “Did you get a nap?”

“Yes.”

“Good. By the way, I’m still on babysitting duty,” he added.

“Oh my God, Mack, I can manage.” Jillie bristled and narrowed her gaze. “I don’t need a sitter.”

“I’m still here anyway.”

“Well that’s ridiculous.” She turned back to the chili. But the smirky smile he gave her right before she did—one that half crossed over into dangerous sexy waters—unnerved her a bit. Flustered, Jillie dropped the ladle into the chili. The hot soup splashed onto the back of her hand and she jerked away. “Crap. Ouch!”

She snagged Mack’s gaze as he stepped forward. His intense glare unnerved her so much that she didn’t see him reaching for her hand.

“You lost the spoon,” Mack said. His fingers were still cold from working outside. He lightly touched a knuckle. “You okay? Those knuckles look red already.”

And they stung. She pulled back sharply, but not completely out of his grasp. “Um. Yeah. I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.” He tugged her closer, his blue eyes dancing. She locked into his gaze and he held her there for a few seconds, while her heart did a little flip-flop. Leaning in, he lifted her hand to his lips, and licked off the chili spatter off.

One. Knuckle. At. A. Time.

Mesmerized by the action, all Jillie could do was stand there and let him. His tongue dragging over her skin sent a revolving skitter of desire through her body and jump-started the months-buried yearning for him in her heart—and elsewhere. Every delicate nerve ending connected to her hands tingled with anticipation. Where else might he lick?

Her lips?

Neck?

Um…?

Stunned at the heat of his touch, Jillie attempted to stifle the shiver racing up her spine and keep her hand from shaking. She wasn’t successful. After what seemed a suspended moment in time, he stopped, and his gaze drifted up to meet hers.

Those blue eyes twinkled back. She trembled a little inside while her tongue made a quick swipe over her suddenly parched lower lip. Mack’s gaze immediately dropped to her mouth, and she willed down the flipping butterflies in her stomach.

She stepped back and jerked her hand away.

THE UNEXPECTED WEDDING

Don't forget the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of this post!

The Unexpected Wedding
Loving a Billionaire Book 2
by
Debra Elizabeth
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Lady Elizabeth Tyndale has endured a string of bad dates. She’s not sure if sharing her opinions and business sense scared potential boyfriends away, but what’s the point of having an opinion if she never expresses it? When her brother and sister-in-law invite her to join them on a trip to San Diego, she reluctantly agrees. Besides, what does she have to lose? She’s certainly not burning up the dating scene in England.

Computer Programmer Jackson ‘Jack’ Stanfield doesn’t date much. He’d rather bury himself in code because computers are simple, but people are complicated. When his college buddy invites him to a BBQ, Jack reluctantly agrees to attend. He’s not prepared for his intense reaction when he meets Elizabeth Tyndale. Can the British beauty draw Jack out of his shell and open his heart to love?

Jack walked toward the back door. When he was almost there, he saw a vision—a stunning young woman with blonde curls cascading down her back. When she turned at his approach, the last rays of the sun enveloped her silhouette, giving her an ethereal dreamy quality. She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen, and he felt the breath leave his body as he stood staring open-mouthed. He’d never had such a reaction to a woman before. It was new and an unnerving experience.

“Did you want something?” she asked.

Jack continued to stare, totally captivated by this woman and her beautiful cornflower blue eyes. He knew she was talking, but he didn’t hear a word, just a lyrical melody.

The young woman waved her hand in front of his face. “Hello, can I get you something?”

That broke his trance and Jack felt heat climb up his neck. “Huh? Oh god. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to stare,” he stammered.

“It’s quite all right. Now do you want something, a beer perhaps?” she asked.

“You’re British?”

The young woman’s eyes traveled down to her feet and back up again before she looked at him. “Last time I looked, yes,” she chuckled.

What an asinine thing to say!

“Shall we start again?” she asked. “I’m Elizabeth and you are?”

Jack gave himself a mental shake. “Oh, please forgive me. I’m not used to making a complete fool of myself before I’ve even uttered a single word. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Elizabeth. I’m Jackson, um Jack, that is.”

“Well, Jackson um Jack, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Now, would you like a beer?”

He chuckled. “Yes, please. That would be good.”

FOREWORD BY SUZANNE SOMERS

Biology of the Brain

Are you sick?

Are you plagued by chronic health problems with no cure or remedy in sight?

Are you tired of spending thousands on medications that only seem to make you worse?

Think that your drugs are a sham that are just managing symptoms and never dealing with the root cause? You’re not alone!

Millions suffer from similar ailments and health struggles just like you, only to be prescribed more medications that can actually cause harm, and in some cases, even kill you. The medical industry has it all backward!

Chronic health conditions and mental health disorders are increasing at an alarming rate, and yet we are still trying to use the same old ineffective drugs that can have very serious side effects.

We’re the blind leading the blind in the hopes that the next great pill will solve all of our problems. Meanwhile, the health of the majority of Canadians and Americans is deteriorating—fast!

But there is a growing understanding in the community that there’s a bigger beast at the heart of the health epidemic…

It’s called the microbiome. And it’s intimately connected to your brain.

Microbiome health is brain health.

In The Biology of the Brain, Kent MacLeod, pharmacist, founder and CEO of NutriChem Compounding Pharmacy and Clinic, breaks down why modern medicine is killing people instead of healing them. Instead of leaving the problem as it stands, he provides you with clear, actionable steps to not only heal your microbiome, but to restore your brain health and get your life back.
Read an Excerpt

This chapter is about the 50% of people that do not get a full response to our microbiome treatment plans within the first 30 days. We’ll cover how:

• Not everyone responds to diet, probiotics, and prebiotics.

• There are bacteria and fungi that must be killed off, and are dificult to kill off, before certain people can shift their microbiome effectively.

• There are certain herbal antimicrobials that have proven to be as effective as many antibiotics for killing biofilm-forming microorganisms.

• There are other herbals, with less scientific evidence, that have been used traditionally to treat gastrointestinal issues.

We are beginning to realize that almost all substances, be it a drug, a food, or a drink, impact the microbiome, and we must be aware of this. RESPECT THE MICROBIOME! DISRESPECT IT AT YOUR PERIL!

For certain patients, we have to dig deeper into their issues with specific testing. Using urinary organic acid testing (a urine sample), we can look at signs of bacterial or fungal overgrowth and biofilms that may not be treatable with diet, probiotics, and prebiotics. We also look at stool samples for bacterial strains, and perform bacterial DNA testing to identify what bugs are currently residing in your gut.

We are just now beginning to awaken to the fact that any time that you change your diet, fibers, drugs, or herbs, you are always shifting or manipulating the microbiome. Anything that you intake, be it food, drink, or drugs, can impact the microbiome. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction have also shown to improve the health of the microbiome.

An interesting example is the drug, metformin. Metformin has been the number one oral drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes for decades. Initially, we thought that this drug sensitized the body to insulin via the pancreas or liver, but recent studies have shown that metformin actually exerts its effects via the microbiome.

Never a Bride
At the Shore Book 3
by
Caridad Pinero
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Emma never dreamed that the happily-ever-after would change her life. . .

But as her two best friends find love, Emma worries about what her future will bring. She has seen all too often what happens once husbands and children arrive. She puts on a brave face because she wants her buddies to be happy, but as a wedding planner, she has seen one too many marriages go south. Not to mention her parents' bitter divorce which has soured her on the idea of marriage for herself. She can't imagine ever finding a man who can bring her a forever kind of romance.

He's been in love with her forever and can't understand why she can't see it. . .

Carlo da Costa knows why Emma avoids relationships and yet he can't help but wonder how someone who puts such love and care into others' dreams can't allow herself to believe in the fairy tale. He sees the yearning on her face when she spends time with him and his big boisterous family and knows that deep inside, she wants the same thing. Carlo hopes that one day he can provide her with that because he's sure Emma holds the key to his heart in her hands.

Prologue
The bouquet shot toward her head like a spaceship launched at the moon.

Emma Grant had no time to deflect the missile. She tangled her fingers into the luscious petals of the peonies, roses, and hydrangea, rousing fragrant floral scents as the bouquet grazed her face. When she was in wedding planner mode, she would have taken the time to appreciate the freshness of the blooms, but tonight she was also a bridesmaid and best friend and totally unhappy about her current predicament.

Flowers fisted in her hand, Emma whirled to face her other best friend and maid of honor, Connie Reyes, who with a subtle hip check, had knocked Emma straight into the path of the flying tussie mussie. “I thought you were my friend!”

“Totally,” Connie said with a broad smile and waltzed off to the side of the dance floor to where Carlo Gonzalez, her caterer extraordinaire and longtime man crush, stood with some of his wait staff.

Her friends thought Carlo was the man to give Emma her happily-ever-after, except it wasn’t possible that someone like Carlo could love someone like her. She was broken inside and had been for some time while Carlo was everything good in this world. A loving son and a supportive brother. A go-to-guy for her and so many others. But a lover? Even though her insides ignited at the thought of making love with the incredibly handsome Carlo, Emma knew it could only lead to misery on way too many levels.

He was her business partner of sorts and she valued how well they worked together. They had even talked about forming an event planning business more than once so Emma could have her own company and Carlo could expand his. Not to mention that he was her best friend and she couldn’t imagine not having him in her life, but she was certain that was what would happen if they tried to go from friends to lovers and it didn’t work out.

But Emma’s fears weren’t keeping Connie from trying to drag Carlo into the center of the dance floor for the next part of the wedding ritual. He protested at first and as all eyes settled on him as he balked, embarrassment engulfed her. His hesitation confirmed to Emma that changing the nature of their relationship was not necessarily something he wanted to do either.

Others soon joined in to offer Connie assistance and Carlo finally relented, although clearly reluctant. The handsome caterer stood with the other single men, and as the groom prepared his garter toss, Emma closed her eyes and mumbled a prayer beneath her breath.

“Dear Lord, please be good to me,” she said and half-opened her eyes to watch.

Apparently God wasn’t listening since the garter flew across the air, and like a horseshoe tossed at a ring, the circle of baby blue satin ribbon and beige lace landed on Carlo’s index finger, earning hoots and shouts from all gathered at the perfect catch.

Emma groaned and popped her eyes wide open as Carlo stood there, dangling the garter for all to see. A stain of color marred his cheeks as he peeked at her with a chagrined smile.

The heat of a blush erupted all across her face and up to her ears. She half glanced at Connie who had returned to stand by her and Emma said, “I will kill you for this. When you least suspect it, it will happen.”

Connie couldn’t stifle her chuckle, and when the groom’s brother and best man Jonathan Pierce strolled to her friend’s side, Connie high-fived Jonathan for his assistance with the plot. Connie murmured something to him that Emma couldn’t quite hear as the band launched into a sexy riff to continue the wedding tradition. Carlo sauntered over, garter dangling from his finger as someone placed a chair for her to sit on in the middle of the makeshift dance floor.

“The quicker you get it over with, the easier it will be,” Emma thought, hurried out, and unceremoniously plopped onto the chair. It was like taking off a bandage with a quick rip. It cut the pain much like she wanted to lessen the humiliation of Carlo being forced into this wedding tradition.

The sexy music continued as Carlo kneeled before her and mouthed “Don’t worry.” In deference to the fancy event being held at the Sinclair beachfront mansion, he was dressed in a tuxedo. The black of the tux emphasized the deep brown of his thick wavy hair. The electric white shirt was the perfect foil against olive skin that still bore the remnants of a summer tan. He smiled at her, his teeth toothpaste bright and perfect. The smile was brilliant and transformed the chiseled features of his face. Made his chocolate brown eyes gleam with a mix of amusement and awkwardness.

It was way too easy to picture him as the groom. Her groom, but that was an impossible wish. As his gaze locked with hers, she detected something different for a moment. Something dangerous that she tried to convince herself wasn’t there. There was no way that was there, she told herself.

She silently pleaded with him not to make the situation worse. Ever the gentleman, he heeded her plea and kept it clean as she looked up toward the inky night sky to avoid watching him. His touch was deferential while he slipped the lacy fabric past her shoe and ankle, but even the faintest whisper of his rough palm against her skin had her trembling inside and heat racing across her body. He moved the garter up a little higher to her calf and paused, forcing Emma to look at him to find out the reason for his delay.

Carlo grinned sexily and the fire at her core ignited into a five-alarm blaze. He was just so damn handsome and it was impossible not to imagine doing more with him. He inched the garter past her knee, his palm teasing her smooth skin, but stopped there despite the entreaties of the single men to go ever higher. He wagged his head, shook his finger in a no-way gesture, and tenderly draped Emma’s gown back over her legs.

Emma met his gaze once more, thankful, but this time it was impossible to miss that his look was filled with yearning. With that emotion, she had maybe hoped for and dreaded at the same time. And then Carlo did something totally unexpected and decidedly risky. He wrapped an arm around her waist, urged her to her feet, and slowly drew her close.

Her knees trembled and her heart pounded so loudly, she barely heard the music and cheers from those who’d maybe had a little too much to drink during the festivities. Carlo steadied her, keeping his arm around her waist as he cradled her jaw. Slowly he leaned toward her and tilted her face up with the gentlest pressure.

She could have backed away. Could have stopped him, but truthfully she didn’t want him to stop. She inched up on her tiptoes to meet his lips.

While preparing her childhood home for sale, she realizes for the first time that her mother’s antique brooch is identical to the one pinned to the lady's dress in the painting hanging above the fireplace. Coincidence or connection?  Carolyn is determined to find out. What she discovers has the potential to tear lives apart or to bring her the closeness and comfort she longs for. It all depends on how she handles her newfound knowledge.

Guest post by Linda Rosen

Does it Matter Where the Novel is Set?

When Barbara Kingsolver was pondering themes for her latest novel, Unsheltered, she “had a vague feeling the world as we knew it was ending.” This thought brought her to another “dangerously uncertain” time in our history – the 1870s. As she explained, “The country was wrecked by war and a book by Charles Darwin was shaking the very notion of what it meant to be human.” So, Kingsolver “went looking for an American scientist involved in that radical debate.” She found her living in Vineland, New Jersey and had her setting.

There are books where the setting is obvious, though there are also some where readers might wonder why, that there is nothing in the setting germane to the story or theme. It’s simply where the characters live.

In The Disharmony of Silence my protagonist, Carolyn, lives in Tarrytown, NY. Why? The story isn’t set around the town’s history and has absolutely nothing to do with Ichabod Crane or Sleepy Hollow. Simply, it’s because I have always been attracted to a housing complex I see as I drive across the Tappan Zee Bridge, now named the Mario M. Cuomo. (It bothers me when names are changed!) Therefore, I decided Tarrytown would be Carolyn’s home. It’s close to her mother in New Rochelle. Also, there is no major reason for using that town. It’s just that I once worked in New Rochelle and it was sexier than using my own home town, and a short train ride from New York City which is important in the novel.

Another character in my book, Kate, lives in Venice Beach, California. I could have chosen any town 3,000 miles from Carolyn’s home, but Venice, with its narrow streets surrounded by canals and purple and orange Birds of Paradise, enchants me.

Thinking of settings in some novels I’ve recently read, the towns or countries are pertinent to the story, as in Unsheltered. Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone, set in Alaska, is perfect for the theme and will make you want to bundle up in a warm blanket as you read. On the other hand The Moon Sisters by Therese Walsh, which takes place in the wilds of West Virginia, could have been set in any wilderness as long as it had bogs and humidity. And in the novel, The Girls of 17 Swann Street, the town does not matter at all. It’s the unforgettable characters in a house on a street which can be anywhere.

Settings, with sounds, scents and textures, whether a town or country, a coffee shop or even a front porch with a swing, bring the reader in close, just as a camera does when using a zoom lens. Will you now wonder about the setting in the novel you are reading, if it’s not obvious? I hope so. It definitely makes discussing a book, as well as what the author’s intentions might have been, fun.
