I was diagnosed with clinical depression after the loss of my mother, father and husband within three years of each other; all to cancer. 24/7 in-home care, coupled with the loss I felt, left its mark on my psyche.

Depression takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real time.

To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn't open mail, talk on the phone, or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall. There didn't need to be a reason or trigger.

People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world into which other people with similar problems could escape. I wanted to share the one place that had helped me for many years.

I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don't ever let anyone tell you different.

I read books as well as write them and have visited the worlds many different authors have created. Those worlds not only make me feel better, but give me the strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes—I want them to know they are making a difference.

Rhiann stood on the porch of the mid-century ranch house. Cup of coffee in hand, she watched the blazing orange sunrise. Streamers of light cascaded on the mountains west of the property, casting a rosy glow on the rocks and patches of snow upon the higher elevation. October’s morning danced with the browning grasses of the nearby pastures as touches of frost shimmered upon tan sprigs surrounding the house. Overhead, a flock of Canada geese in traditional V formation honked as they winged their way south.  

Rhiann observed them and whispered, “We have something in common. We’re starting over.”  

Her body shivered, from autumn’s chill coupled with a wave of nervousness. She sighed as her gaze returned to her surroundings. 

            “Sure wish you were here, Grams,” she said, her voice still low. “This was our dream, to come here together and to make the sanctuary a reality. Now, it’s just me, starting over again.” 

            Yips and whines from two dogs sitting at her feet caused her to smile. She reached down and petted an elderly tri-colored female beagle and a middle-aged male black and white Shih Tzu. 

            “I know, guys, I know. I have both of you.” 

             Rhiann glanced through a bay window that protruded from the kitchen. She saw her two adoption-bound dogs, Max and Molly, resting on dog beds near the living room’s stone hearth. Her gaze flickered back to her canine charges on the porch, and she scratched their heads. 

            “You both are always so good with the animals waiting to be adopted, and our new home here in Montana hasn’t changed your sweet dispositions.” 

           Taking a sip of coffee from her mug and observing the mountains to the west, Rhiann’s mind wandered to the previous day. The face of the smiling EMT with his chiseled features and cleft chin caused her heart to skip. Even though his appearance from the wooded trail had startled her, the tingle she’d experienced from the touch of his fingers upon her hand seared her skin like a brand. She stroked her wrist and hand at the memory. She hadn’t let herself experience such a feeling in years. Her former boyfriend’s rejection had also branded her, causing her to forego love and romance. Yesterday, however, a spark ignited. She pondered where Levi lived; he had mentioned they might be neighbors.  

She shook her head, disengaging the image and thoughts of the EMT and refocusing on tasks that needed completion.  

            “I’m here for a purpose, not a relationship,” she reminded herself. “There’s work to be done, especially with the moving van arriving soon.” 

She picked up the Shih Tzu. “Spa day for you, Jax. Can’t start off our new journey looking bedraggled.” 

 The little dog licked her cheek, and Rhiann laughed as she hugged him. “Yes, Jax, we can do this. If you could survive four years in a puppy mill, I can make this our new home, no matter how much work lies ahead.”

After a horrific week spent moving across our North Central Texas county to a smaller place, we are frazzled. So many decisions, many of them painful, but we are moved! Of course, the garage is filled with boxes taunting us that they have to be unpacked and the contents placed where they belong. Too much to consider! Our pets love their new home and so do we.

She pressed her hand against his arm. “Don’t, Gabe. It’s such a nice afternoon. Don’t spoil it by prying.”

“All right. But I wish you’d trust me with all your secrets, Shimza. Damn, I feel like a fool calling you that but I don’t even know your real name.”

“Shimza will do. And I do trust you to keep me safe here.”

“But you don’t think I could if you told me more, is that it?” He gently clasped her shoulders and turned her to face him.

She met his gaze, pleading with him, “Please, it’s too . . . complicated.”

Slowly he slid his hands across her shoulders, lightly up her neck, and caressed her face with his thumbs. He rested his hands gently on either side of her face. “Then let’s make it a little more complicated.” He leaned forward and claimed her lips.

She dissolved against him. His gentle kiss increased in fervor. Her arms slid around him and her fingers weaved into his hair.

His hands slid across her back. Stroking. Touching. Hugging.

One of his strong hands skimmed her ribs beneath her breast. Brazenly, she wished he’d move higher where she ached to be touched. As it was, the heat of his touch near burned through her clothing.

He broke their embrace, his chest heaving. “I’ve never kissed a client. Damn, Grandpa will have my hide.”

She rested her head against his powerful shoulder. “Mmm, I don’t think so. Perhaps you noticed we were seated next to one another at dinner. I could be wrong, but I think the Judge and Mrs. Gamble are conspiring. Judge Kincaid smiled when we left the dining room together.”

“You don’t say? Then, if it’s all right with you, I’m kissing you again.”

And he did. Not that she was an expert, but her verdict was he kissed very well indeed.

While delivering a mental lecture about this being not my business and I needed to get some sleep anyway, I saw his lips move but couldn’t hear a damn thing over the din of the place. When his female companion jumped up and threw her napkin down on the table, she almost plowed backward right into me. She wobbled on her teetering high heels, then lurched away and straight into a waiter, whose tray was loaded with salads heavy on kale and entrees heavy on marrow. 

I reached out and caught her arm. She was blotto, that much was clear at this close distance. Little Burke Brother—Michael, I recalled—stayed seated, his expression blank during this whole exercise. 

Jerk. 

A bizarre surge of protectiveness came over me. I took her arm and guided her down the steps. Once we hit the fresh air, she revived enough to peel away from me, drop to her hands and knees, and puke on the sidewalk. 

As I held her hair back like some kind of sorority sister, the substantial foot traffic gave us a wide berth, most of them without comment. It was Craft Beer Convention time in Denver. Puking humans were more common than weed stores, at least for a day or two. 

While I waited for her to wrap up her worship at the cement altar, I summoned a ride on my phone app, realizing too late I had no idea where she was staying. She probably had a two-star room with a DNA soaked bed and a lovely view of the dumpster, like me. I got a warm, sisterly feeling about her. 

I waited while she spit, then rose to her feet. 

“Take those off already,” I said, pointing to the black patent leather heels. She did. Her eyes rolled around in their sockets. Her lollipop of a head didn’t want to stay upright. I plunked us down on a conveniently placed sidewalk bench—gotta love Denver—and waited, not sure which would come first, the ride or the second round of the happy hurls. 

Luckily, it was the ride.
