NUMBER ONE PROXY BRIDE ACCORDING TO BOOK AUTHORITY

By Caroline Clemmons

The historical western romance, A BRIDE FOR GIDEON, is one of my favorites of the books I’ve written. Happily for me, Book Authority agreed and chose this book as the Number One Best Proxy Bride Book of All Time! Wow—you can imagine how much that pleased me. I’ll take that kind of news any day. A BRIDE FOR GIDEON is book 16 of the multi-author Proxy Brides Series. The cover, designed by Virginia McKevitt is also one of my favorites. The model appears just as I always wanted to look. Sigh.

Let yourself travel back to 1871. It’s an easy trip with your handy ereader or in print. I enjoy reading on my phone’s Kindle app.

Even when it’s for a good reason, starting over is difficult. That is what the heroine of A BRIDE FOR GIDEON had to contemplate. In 1871, Keira Cameron left Scotland to come to Boston and live with her favorite cousin. Ten years before, Gideon Ross had left Scotland and brought his younger sister to Chicago to stay with relatives. I am excited about this book, which unites Keira and Gideon via a proxy marriage. Incidentally, I learned that proxy marriages and double proxy marriages are still performed today.)

Universal Amazon buy link is https://www.amazon.com/Bride-Gideon-Proxy-Brides-Book-ebook/dp/B07R85KZPC/  is available in e-book, print, and is available in KU.

Here is the synopsis for A BRIDE FOR GIDEON.

Keira desperately wants to belong somewhere

Gideon is haunted by a secret too horrible to share

Fate conspires against them…

Keira Cameron came to Boston from Scotland after the death of her parents. She wanted a job, a husband, and eventually a family. She feels rejected because she’s too tall, too foreign, and too pretty for a wife to want her working near a woman’s husband. Were her expectations unreasonable? Her cousin convinces her to enter a proxy marriage to his friend, Gideon Ross, who lives in Montana Territory. Out of options, she agrees and hopes her goals will be realized.

Gideon Ross is a large man at five inches over six feet. His business is a smithy and gun repair shop. The war left him with a terrible scar on his face. He wears a beard to try to conceal the scar but still hears people whisper he’s a monster and a giant. Do they think he has no feelings? He’s haunted by the war and has terrible nightmares. Reluctantly, he agrees to wed Keira by proxy.

Outside forces work against the couple. Keira and Gideon must find the key to the attack on their lives. Can they defeat the enemy before they’re too late?

If you read my books—and I certainly hope you do—then you know I always like a little mischief and mayhem working against the hero and heroine. This book is no exception.

If you’d like to be included in a drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card, comment on this blog between January 26th and January 30th. I’ll announce the winner on February 2nd. If you haven’t already read this book, now is the perfect time.

I enjoy writing novels which end in happily-ever-after. My goal is to provide a brief distraction from stresses and cares while I entertain readers. To each of you who buy my books, thank you! If you also leave a review, double thanks.

PROXY BRIDE BOOKS ARE POPULAR READS

By Caroline Clemmons

Don’t you love a great series that continues to have books available? I love reading them and writing in them. That’s why Proxy Bride Series conceived by Christine Sterling has remained a favorite with so many readers. We’re up to 76 and more are coming this year!

All through the month of January, the Proxy Bride Series is being featured by the participating authors—arranged by Heidi Gray McGill. The historical western romance books are still only $2.99 each for e-book, most are available in print, and are enrolled in Kindle Unlimited. You can find them featured at this site—revolving through the month to expose each of the books.

https://heidimcgill822089357.wordpress.com/the-proxy-brides-series-promo/

Proxy bride marriages used to be more common than they are now. However, they are still performed. Those in the series are set in the late 1800s. I’m sure you’re aware that the Civil War and the move West left the male population in the Eastern United States highly depleted. You know that more men died in the Civil War than in both WWI and WWII combined. So what was a young woman to do? She could become a mail-order bride or a proxy bride unless she wanted to be a companion (dogsbody) to an older woman or live as little more than a servant with a sister or brother and family.

Most proxy brides, I think, were arranged by friends rather than a matrimonial agency. At least that’s how the marriage happened in the proxy bride stories I’ve written. So far, I have three books in the series, but I’ll add more.

My first is A BRIDE FOR GIDEON, book 16. At the risk of sounding immodest, I love this book.

Book Authority chose this book as the Top Proxy Bride Book of All Time. Woo Hoo! You can imagine how thrilled I was to learn that. The cover, by V. McKevitt’s Black Widow Cover Designs is also one of my favorites. She designed all the covers for the series.

My second Proxy Bride is A BRIDE FOR DALTON, Book 25

Rebecca and Dalton embark on married life in unusual circumstances. Can love blossom in tumultuous times?

Rebecca wants a husband but not the man her stepbrother insists she wed. To escape his threats she turns to a family friend for help. Reverend McClain suggests she enter a proxy marriage to his only living relative, a nephew who ranches in Montana. Out of options, she agrees. Until she arrives in Sweet Springs, she has no idea the telegram with instructions to her supposed groom has not been delivered. Where does that leave her?

Dalton is working with dangerous men to accomplish his goal. The last thing he needs at this time is a wife to distract him. He is a gentleman and sees no other solution than to complete the vows. How is he going to keep her out of harm’s way while he completes this job?

My last (so far) is A BRIDE FOR LUKE, Book 36

Each is struggling to build a better life. Two strong-willed people are bound to clash. Danger forces them to focus on what is at stake.

Maeve Kelly came to America for a better life. In Boston she found only signs that said No Irish Need Apply. Now the cousin she is staying with is moving. Maeve has until the end of the month to find a new place to live. Her friend at the laundry where she works suggests proxy marriage to her nephew as a solution. Maeve resists then finally accepts.

Sheriff Luke Sullivan is admired and well-respected in the community of Broken Wheel, Wyoming Territory. When he learns his mother and aunt have schemed to get him a proxy bride he’s furious.  Before he and his bride can adjust to one another, Luke is caught in the middle of an explosive situation between striking miners and the railroad.

99¢ SALE -- A BRIDE FOR GIDEON

By Caroline Clemmons

This is a great 99¢ sale on a great historical western romance today through November 15th!

When a story I’ve written is well received, I’m grateful and inspired. A BRIDE FOR GIDEON, book 16 of the Proxy Brides Series, has 120 five star reviews, and was chosen the #1 Proxy Bride Book of All Time by Book Authority. What a pleasant surprise that was! The book is in ebook and print, and is enrolled in KU. Find it here: https://www.amazon.com/Bride-Gideon-Proxy-Brides-Book-ebook/dp/B07R85KZPC/

I loved the cover the second I saw it. V. McKevitt of Black Widow Designs created the cover. The model on the cover looks the way I always wished I did. A lot of people in my mom’s maternal family had red hair and blue eyes. My eyes are blue, but I got blonde hair that darkened as I aged. I know, we often want something different than we have.

For those who don’t know, a proxy marriage is when the bride and groom are in separate locations. As unusual as this may sound, proxy marriage is still practiced today. For instance, a man serving in the military might marry his sweetheart by proxy—or vice versa. I enjoy writing proxy bride stories, and hope you enjoy reading them.

A BRIDE FOR GIDEON is a sweet historical western romance, most of which takes place in a small Montana town. Here’s the blurb:

Keira desperately wants to belong somewhere

Gideon is haunted by a secret too horrible to share

Fate conspires against them…

Keira Cameron came to Boston from Scotland after the death of her parents. She wanted a job, a husband, and eventually a family. She feels rejected because at almost six feet she’s too tall. Her Scottish burr makes her appear too foreign. She is too pretty for any wife to want Keira working near the woman’s husband.

Scottish cottage

Enjoy an excerpt:

He drained the last of the milk from the jar. “Go ahead and buy what you need. You can’t sleep on a pallet and I can’t take up less room than I did last night.”

A broad smile appeared on her beautiful face. “You’ll sleep better when you can stretch out and not have your feet sticking off the end of the bed.”

He met her gaze, remembering their wedding night. “Aye, and I’d like to hold my wife in my arms all night.”

She blushed and looked down. “I’ll take these back to the house so you can get back to work.”

He held her shoulders. “Keira? There’s no need to be embarrassed because your husband wants to hold you in his arms.”

“I don’t know what to say or do. So much has changed in only a short while.”

He took the items from her and pressed a kiss to her rose petal lips. She leaned into him but didn’t respond for a few seconds. He increased the pressure on her lips and she wrapped her arms around his neck.

The creak of a wagon startled him. Someone called, “Whoa.”

Keira stared at Gideon but her eyes didn’t appear focused. She opened her mouth as if to speak but said nothing. Gideon kept his arms around her.

Bud Palmer came into the smithy. “Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt.”

Gideon changed so only one arm was around Keira’s shoulders. “Keira, this is Bud Palmer. Bud, Keira is my wife.”

Bud pumped Gideon’s hand. “Congratulations.” He took Keira’s hand. “Welcome, Mrs. Ross. Sure hope you like Haverhill.”

“Thank you, Mr. Palmer. I already like this town.” Once again she picked up the things from lunch. “If you’ll excuse me, I’ll get back to the house.”

Bud stared after her. “You’re a lucky man. I believe that’s the prettiest woman I’ve ever seen.”

Gideon agreed, yet an odd feeling gripped him. He didn’t want Bud gaping at his wife with that appreciative gleam in his eyes. He didn’t want any man looking at her in that way. Who was he kidding? He suspected every man who saw her would stare no matter what her husband wanted.

He faced his visitor. “What can I do for you?”

A BRIDE FOR GIDEON WINS!

In case you are one of the few people who has escaped my announcement, please let me share my news with you. Recently, I learned that A BRIDE FOR GIDEON received the honor of being named the #1 Proxy book of all time by BookAuthority! OF ALL TIME! Can you believe it? I am—to say the least—amazed and pleased!

Do I believe A BRIDE FOR GIDEON is the best Proxy Bride book of all time? Of course, I'd like to because it's my baby and I love it. I think you'll have to read it and decide for yourself.

The hero and heroine in A BRIDE FOR GIDEON are among my favorites and the book is one of my favorite stories. The cover by V. McKevitt of Black Widow Designs is one of my favorite covers. Obviously, I enjoyed writing and promoting this book. To have someone else recommend it is icing on my cake—with cherries on top.

Here’s a bit about the story:

Keira desperately wants to belong somewhere...

Gideon is haunted by a secret too horrible to share...

Fate conspires against them.

Keira Cameron came to Boston from Scotland after the death of her parents. She wanted a job, a husband, and eventually a family. She feels rejected because she's too tall, too foreign, and too pretty for a wife to want her working near her husband.

He wears a beard to try to conceal the scar but still hears people whisper he's a monster and a giant. Do they think he has no feelings? He's haunted by the war and has terrible nightmares. Reluctantly, he agrees to wed Keira by proxy.

Outside forces work against the couple. Keira and Gideon must find the key to the attack on their lives. Can they defeat the enemy before they're too late?

Growing up, one of my favorite fairy tales was Beauty and the Beast. Not the Disney version (which I predate), but the plain story of an unhappy, lonely man and the girl who comes to love him. Have you considered that perhaps the "beast" didn't change? Perhaps the girl learned to see him with her heart instead of her eyes and to fall in love with what she found.

Gideon is like the "beast" in that he appears almost frightening. Physically, he dwarfs most men. His bushy beard, scar, and long, shaggy hair give him an ominous appearance in spite of his personality. The reader is also reminded that no matter how people look on the outside, their feelings can be hurt. They are affected by the attitude of those around them.

Finding new ways to vary a story is a constant quest for authors. I'd never before used a blacksmith as a hero. I had a general impression of a blacksmith's duties, but had to research specifics. What I learned confirmed that a blacksmith was a very important person in pioneer America. He still performs a major role, even though some of his duties have fallen to other fields with the advance of automobiles and so forth. I also found that a blacksmith was often also a gunsmith and a farrier.

I sympathized with Keira because she was even taller than I am. As a girl I was usually the youngest and tallest person in my school class. I dreaded one part of the several family reunions we attended each summer. Seeing extended family was fun and the food was great. Unless you were tall, you have no idea how many times I heard a man tell my father that he should tie a brick to my head to slow my growth. Ugh. This was supposed to be a joke but I did not find the comment funny.

Moving on, A BRIDE FOR GIDEON is a mystery which has Keira and Gideon racing to solve before the villain succeeds.

Universal buy link at Amazon is https://mybook.to/Keira and the book is in e-book, print and is also in KU.

Although this is a part of the multi-author series Proxy Brides, the book is a stand-alone work.  If you haven't read this story, please do. And, please leave a review.

A BRIDE FOR GIDEON, #16 PROXY BRIDES SERIES

What an exciting week for me! A BRIDE FOR GIDEON releases May 9th and has been available on preorder for a couple of weeks. This is #16 of the popular Proxy Brides Series, a multi-author project. I’m so honored to participate in this project. The beautiful cover was designed by Virginia McKevitt.

I'll be giving away a $25 Amazon gift card to one person who comments on this blog between now and midnight May 12.

A BRIDE FOR GIDEON takes place in Montana in 1871. Here’s the blurb:

Keira desperately wants to belong somewhere
Gideon is haunted by a secret too horrible to share
Fate conspires against them…

Keira Cameron came to Boston from Scotland after the death of her parents. She wanted a job, a husband, and eventually a family. She feels rejected because she’s too tall, too foreign, and too pretty for a wife to want Keira working near her husband. Were her expectations unreasonable? I love writing books with outside forces working against the hero and heroine. The more mayhem in the story, the more I enjoy writing. I also enjoy humor in a book but that I write is subtle. Still, I hope readers find a smile tugging at them once in a while.

Here’s an excerpt from A BRIDE FOR GIDEON of when he finds out his sister and brother-in-law have arranged a proxy marriage for him:

Darren strutted around in front of Gideon. “So what do you think about Keira?
Following Darren’s conversations was always a winding road. “Who?”
“Keira Cameron, the girl I’ve been telling you about, who else?” Darren rubbed his hands together expectantly. “Shall I set up your part of the proxy wedding this afternoon?”
Gideon leaned on the anvil. “Are your ears plugged then? I said I’m not interested.”
Darren pulled off his cap and wrung the thing in his hands while a worried expression hovered on his face. “Well, you see now, Gideon, there might be a problem with you saying no.”
Gideon stood with his hammer in one hand and stared at his best friend. With Darren and Orla’s scheming, he had no need for enemies. “What have you done this time?”
Darren’s eyes widened and he backed two steps and held up a staying hand. “Now take it easy, Gideon, until you’ve heard me tell it all. You see, Keira’s done the proxy wedding on her end and is on her way here.”
Gideon laid down the hammer and tongs and stared at his friend. Surely he’d misunderstood Darren’s prattling. “She’s what?”
“She’ll be on the five o’clock stage today.”
He hadn’t gotten the wrong idea, drat his luck. “Auch, the time must be near four now.”
Darren pulled out his pocket watch. “Aye, half past three. We’d better get you wedded on this end before she arrives.”
Gideon advanced on his friend. “What the devil is wrong with you, man? How could you let this situation get so far out of control before you told me? What do you intend to do when this woman arrives and there’s no groom to meet her?”
He stabbed a finger in Darren’s chest. “You’d better decide fast.”
Darren’s wheedling tone of voice changed to demanding. “Now look here, Gideon Ross. Don’t be mistreating the nice lassie because you’re put out with me. It’s coming on cold weather and you’ll be happy for a wife to warm your bed. Plus, having a wife in your arms at night may stop your nightmares.”
He shook his head, sorrow claiming him. “I doubt anything will make the night terrors cease. Nothing even makes them less.”
“You’ll be surprised. Having Orla next to me has done wonders. Besides, you admitted you wanted a wife and a family.”
He exhaled. Would the man never shut up? “Maybe I’ve changed my mind.”
At six feet to Gideon’s six foot five inches, Darren stared up into his face. “You know you haven’t. Don’t let your stubborn pride prevent you from marrying the one lassie perfect for you. Alec’s description sounds like you and Keira are well matched in height and temperament and the other things you enjoy.”
Gideon couldn’t resist leading on his friend. “Is she a blacksmith going to help in the smithy then or does she repair guns?”
“Don’t be daft, man. You know I mean things you do when you’re not working.”
When would that be? Lately he was working from can until can’t. “Such as?”
“She likes to read and play chess and go outdoors for walks and such. She wants a home and children and the security of a good man. How can you fault her for that?”
“Auch, I’m not faulting her, you idiot. You’re the one whose neck I’d like to wring. I’ll bet your wife—my own little sister—knew about this and conspired with you against me. Am I right?”
Darren wouldn’t meet his gaze. “Orla and I might have talked the possibilities over between us. Listen, Gideon, the idea came to us only because we think so highly of you and want you to be happy. Orla especially worries about your well being.”
The truth of what his friend said softened his anger. “Well, you’re in a fine mess now, aren’t you? How did this woman come by the funds for the train and stage fare?”
Darren grimaced. “Um, well, you see, Orla took the money from her inheritance, the money from your grandparents’ estate. She said there was no better use for it than seeing her dear brother happy.”
Gideon hated that his sister had used part of her money on his behalf. What was Darren thinking to let her? Gideon took a deep breath. Auch, what was he thinking himself? There was no “letting” Orla do anything. His sister was stubborn as a stone once she’d made up her mind.
He frowned and pointed at his friend. “Through no fault of her own you’re bringing a woman over two thousand miles under false pretenses.”
“But, don’t you see? They’re not false if you wed her by proxy before she arrives. Orla is waiting at the parsonage until you and I show up. She’ll stand in for Keira and I’ll be a witness. Come on, Gideon, you won’t be sorry.”
“What’s the point? She’ll soon be here and I can marry her then if I wish.”
Darren did a few fast steps to get in front of him. “No, can’t you see that won’t work? Think about the situation. She’s already married you by proxy in Boston and believes herself properly wed. You have to do the same before she arrives, else I don’t know what will happen. Don’t let being peevish with me cause you to hurt Keira.”
Gideon found himself weakening. In truth he would like a wife to come home to each day. He admitted he’d been depressed since Ella had publicly rejected him six months ago. Was he that unlovable? Her privately recanting her criticism recently had done little to soothe his hurt even as it made him glad he wasn’t married to the fickle woman.
He looked down at his leather apron tied over his grimy work clothes. “Did you not think I might like to look a little better on my wedding day? Did you not consider that this Keira might appreciate coming to a clean home?”
Darren tugged on his arm. “Come to the church parsonage now. While you’re at the stage stop, Orla and I will nip over to your house and tidy it a bit.”
Recalling the state of his home, Gideon shook his head. “A ‘bit’ won’t do the job. You know I’ve been rushed with jobs and working all hours for months. I haven’t cleaned in… well, it’s been a while. Unless I’m mistaken, I don’t even have a clean shirt. Once again, you’ve created a mess with your meddling.”
Darren refused to be daunted. “Don’t give it a second thought. Orla and I will make things presentable while you’re meeting the stage.”
Resigned to Darren and Orla’s manipulation, Gideon removed his apron. He must be losing his mind. He told himself he was only agreeing to spare this Keira the humiliation he’d experienced.
Fact was, not only curiosity fueled him. He admitted he was lonely. He looked forward to a wife sharing his life.

I hope you’ll join me in celebrating this release and that you’ll buy and read A BRIDE FOR GIDEON. If you enjoy the book, please leave a review on Amazon. I’ll appreciate it and you’ll be helping me and other readers.
