He's breaking the rules for one woman, and coming dangerously close to falling in love...

Simon Nugent, Earl of Fielding, knows he's flawed. He's arrogant, possessive, and haunted by a terrible choice he made long ago. So when a former friend's daughter gives him the chance to do a good deed, he grabs it. Except he'd like to grab her as well and teach her a thing or two about kissing. If only she weren't so damn stubborn.

Ida Strong wants one thing - justice on behalf of her father. She has no room for anything else, in spite of her growing and (at times) inexplicable attraction toward a certain earl. But for a woman who knows what betrayal tastes like, placing her trust in others is hard. Risking her heart, would be downright foolish. Until it's the only thing that seems to make sense.

Excerpt

London May, 1821

WEARY OF TRYING TO FIND an acceptable bride, Simon Garrison Nugent, Earl of Fielding, had ceased all attempts at marriage and was currently avoiding debutantes much as he would a leper. By keeping his distance. Instead, he chose to pass his evenings with friends. At his age of three and thirty, marriage was expected. He knew it had to happen soon if he was to maintain his dignity. After all, the longer he remained unattached, the more it looked like he’d not yet recovered from losing his fiancĂ©e to another man. It had been three years since the incident yet it still rankled.

Gabriella, now the Duchess of Huntley, would have made the perfect countess. The very idea of her choosing an ill-bred ruffian, even if he did happen to have a prestigious title, was bad enough without Simon having to worry about what people would think of the next bride he picked. She would have to be at least as pretty, graceful, and accomplished as Gabriella. Preferably more so, which brought him back to the inadequacy of the women currently available for marriage.

Seated in a quiet corner of White’s together with Baron Hawthorne and the Earl of Yates, Simon sipped his brandy and tried to force his thoughts away from the past by focusing on what Yates was saying.

“It was never meant to get this out of hand,” Yates explained while looking precisely like the sort of man whose neck was being squeezed by a noose. He was a good fellow – one of the few who seemed to tolerate Simon’s company – though sadly too kind for his own good, seeing as he’d gotten tangled up with an untitled woman who lacked a dowry and connections. “All I meant to do was help the girl. She’s a friend of my sister’s after all.”

“If every man with a sister offered to step out with all her unremarkable friends, he’d have gotten himself engaged a dozen times over,” Baron Hawthorne muttered. He tossed back the remainder of his drink and poured himself another. “It’s your own damn fault for being too nice.”

“He’s right, you know,” Simon said. Stretching out his legs, he crossed them at the ankles and cradled his snifter between his hands while pondering Yates’s dilemma. Apparently there had been a compromising situation which just happened to have been witnessed by a group of matrons hoping to find a reprieve from the stuffy ballroom. Simon sighed.

“The trouble is,” he said, deciding to meet Yates’s gaze dead on, “hell, the trouble has always been, that she’s not your equal. Socially, I mean.”

“Well done, Fielding.” Hawthorne said with a smirk. “It’s always good to know you’ll remind us of what’s acceptable.”

Simon fought the urge to roll his eyes. “Tell me I’m wrong.” His demand was, as expected, met by silence. Not even Yates attempted to argue.

“Miss Harlowe is not countess material. This doesn’t mean she cannot be perfectly lovely, but no matter how you turn it, she’ll always be born into the wrong family.”

There was a heavy moment of silence, and then Hawthorne asked, “Has your outlook on life always been this sunny?”

Simon snorted. “I’m just trying to be realistic. If Yates marries Miss Harlowe, he will no longer be welcome in certain circles, people will talk, and his life as he knows it will be forever changed, which I very much doubt is something he wants.”

“From determined wife hunter to cynical loner,” Yates murmured, his narrowed eyes fixed on Simon with interest. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten your eager pursuit of Gabriella Matthews. Hell, you were even engaged to her for what, ten seconds or so, roughly four years ago?”

“The Duchess of Huntley?” Hawthorne inquired with wide eyes. “I don’t recall that at all.”

“Three,” Simon clipped. “It was three years ago.”

“You must not have been at the Coventry Ball that season,” Yates said to Hawthorne.

“Fielding announced the betrothal – even kissed Gabriella before one and all – only to let the whole thing fizzle away into nothing. A short while later, Huntley and Gabriella were married and you,” Yates tilted his almost empty glass in Simon’s direction, “haven’t proposed to anyone since.”

“Perhaps because I haven’t met anyone else worth asking,” Simon said.

Yates leaned back, his expression suddenly distant and thoughtful. “I think you need to fall in love,” Hawthorne told Simon with a grin.

“God forbid,” Simon muttered. Worrying over his future was difficult enough without throwing love into the mix.

“I don’t think he believes in love,” Yates said. Simon gave his friend a deadpan look.

“Of course I do. There have been so many blissful unions of late, I’m inclined to believe we live in a world full of rainbows where cupids lurk behind every bush. Hell, even Carlton Guthrie, the Scoundrel of St. Giles – a man I would have sworn had no heart – is smitten with his young wife.”

 “Sounds like an epidemic.”

Simon snorted in response to Hawthorne’s comment and took another sip of his drink.

“By the by,” Yates murmured in a more discreet tone than earlier, “I’ve promised Celeste I’d try and find her a new protector, in case this thing with Miss Harlowe doesn’t blow over and I end up marrying her.”

“I don’t understand why you’d want to give up your mistress if you’re not in love,” Hawthorne said.

“Out of respect for my wife,” Yates said. He emitted a heavy sigh and looked at Simon. “I don’t suppose you would be interested?”

“I’m afraid not. In my experience mistresses are demanding and hard to get rid of.” His last one had even made a spectacle, chasing after him on Oxford Street when he’d tried to end things with her. It had been most embarrassing.

“Celeste isn’t like that. She’s quite agreeable and sweet.”

 “Nevertheless,” Simon said.

“No wife or mistress,” Hawthorne said with a pitying look that put Simon on edge. “You must be in need of a good tup.”

“It’s not so bad,” Simon said.

Hawthorne raised an eyebrow. “Really? How long has it been since you last had a woman?”

Simon shrugged. He hated this – hated being made to feel lacking in some way. Attempting to show indifference, he busied himself with refilling his glass. “Three months or so.”

“Damnation,” Yates murmured. “Hell, it’s no wonder you look so tense.”

Hawthorne reached inside his jacket pocket, retrieved a card, and handed it to Simon. “If I may, I suggest you stop by Amourette’s on your way home tonight.”

“It’s a brothel, is it not?” Simon asked. When Hawthorne nodded Simon instinctively winced. “I don’t think so.”

TRUSTING A WARRIOR

Don't miss the Rafflecopter at the end of the post!

Trusting a Warrior
by
Melanie Hansen
GENRE: Contemporary Romance

George Monteverdi always had one goal, to become a navy SEAL. Now that he's both a SEAL and a K-9 handler, saving lives is his priority. When tragedy touches his own life, he handles it—with the help of his crew and his dog, Bosch. Having those guys by his side means he’ll never be alone…though any sort of romance feels like a faraway dream.

Heartbroken after her fiancĂ© falls in love with another woman, Lani Abuel seeks comfort in the arms of a stranger, only to find herself pregnant and alone. She’ll do whatever it takes to be a good mother, which means finally facing the trauma in her past. The last thing she expected was a warrior with wounds all too similar to hers finding his way into her heart and loving her child as his own. As their worlds entwine, Lani and Geo find the joy and redemption they’ve been seeking. But despite the sanctuary they’ve created, a forever love seems impossible. A K-9 handler who spends most of his time deployed with his SEAL team, staring danger in the eye, is far from what Lani—or her baby—needs, and Geo can’t imagine a future doing anything else.

Holding Lani’s eyes with his, Geo tilted the tip of the bottle toward her. “To new friends.”
Smiling, she clinked her glass with his. “And badass dogs.”
Geo couldn’t remember the last time a meal tasted so delicious. He stuffed himself to the gills, finally leaning back in his chair to hide a satisfied belch behind his hand.
Forking up the last bite of her spinach salad, Lani groaned. “I’m so full. I need to get out and move.” He couldn’t resist. “I thought you didn’t like to exercise. Ow!”
She glared at him as she kicked his shin again. “You’re not supposed to make fun of me.” She surged to her feet in mock outrage and started clearing the table.
As she bent over him to pick up his plate, he found himself reaching up to brush the backs of his fingers down her smooth cheek. “You had some flour there,” he said huskily. “Got it.”
Their eyes met, the spark of desire in hers kicking his heartbeat into a sudden gallop.
“Mmm, well…” As he sat breathless, she picked up his napkin and dabbed it gently along the corners of his mouth. “Had some butter there. Got it.”
They stared at each other, and she leaned in closer. Helplessly, he lifted his face, lips parting… Crash!
The fork sliding from his plate to the table broke the spell, and with a self-conscious chuckle, she straightened and turned to carry the dishes to the sink.
Geo raked a hand through his hair, once again willing his body to calm down. She’s having a baby and you’re leaving, asshole. Shit.
If he repeated that enough times to himself, maybe he’d eventually be able to remember it.

Please tell us about growing up. Siblings? Locale?
I was born in Arizona, but because my dad was in the Air Force, as a child I lived all over the country. My parents, my aunt and uncle, my brother and sister all live in Arizona now, along with my thirteen nieces and nephews! So I do call Arizona my home!

Were you the shy kid or the tomboy? Married, single? Children?
Growing up, because I was always the “new kid,” I tended to be very reserved and hard to get to know. Some of that’s carried over into my adult life, especially because I married a career Navy man and the cycle continued. It’s hard to make friends knowing it’s only temporary. Now that my husband’s retired from the Navy, and we’ve started to put down roots in Arizona ourselves, it’s getting easier to make those friendships, knowing they’ll last. Having two teen boys active in high school sports and clubs definitely helps!

When you’re not writing, what’s your favorite way to relax and recharge? Hobbies?
I work full time at our local library, so writing is actually my hobby! Taking long walks and listening to music, totally unplugging, is how I relax and recharge. I also love reading, of course. And cooking, if I’m in the mood.

How long have you been writing?
I started writing fanfic in 2013, and in 2015 my first novel was published. Writing has long been a dream of mine from way back in elementary school, when I won a school-wide writing contest! It’s definitely been a dream come true.

Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?
Since I work full time, most of my writing gets done in the very early morning hours. I try to get up around 3:30 or 4 a.m. so that I can have a few quiet hours to myself before the day gets going. My creativity flows best then, too, because I’ve trained it so well. I alternate between writing on an iPad Pro and a laptop. It’s easy to email my MS back and forth to myself and have it available on whichever device I have handy at the time.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Oh, boy. I used to call myself a pantser, but I’ve found that method to be overly stressful. I’ve written myself into corners pantsing, and when a publisher has set a deadline, that can cause problems. I took a plotting course from an amazing editor, and that has taught me how to outline. The way I do it now, I can set boundaries and structure for myself, with some wiggle room for pantsing. I’m cautiously optimistic because it seems to be working!

Tell us about your writing schedule. Do you set goals? Do you write daily?
I don’t have any goals, per se, but I do try to write a little every day. Some days I just manage a sentence or two, and that’s okay. I have to be realistic with my goals, especially since writing isn’t my day job.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise readers.
I used to be an avid backpacker and hiker, and I’ve hiked the Grand Canyon four times! Once it was a very primitive trail, and we had to filter our own water to drink and cook with. That’s the trip where I sprained my ankle very badly, and because there’s no way out except to walk out, I had to suck it up and keep going. I learned a lot about myself that week!

What advice would you give to unpublished authors
Just keep writing! I recommend starting with fanfic, too. It was a lot of fun to write in someone else’s world with someone else’s characters, especially at first. I learned a lot from writing fanfic. When you’re ready to self-publish or query, ask around and find a good—no, great—editor to work with! My editor has taught me so much, and she’s pushed me and helped me grow.

What has helped you in your writing career?
The support of my friends and family, no doubt. They’re my cheerleaders and biggest fans, and so many times they’ve encouraged me to keep going when I just wanted to quit. In the writing process itself, I’ve had to learn to give myself grace—to make mistakes, to fail, to not be afraid to scrap something and start over. All of that comes with experience and time.

What do you hope your writing brings to readers?
My biggest hope is that readers learn something about the military—that at heart it’s just a job, that not everyone who serves is a hero, and that there a lot of sacrifices involved for both the military member and the people who love them.

Tell us about your latest release.
TRUSTING A WARRIOR is the third book in my Loving a Warrior series. Each book stands alone, but all are interconnected, and I think Geo and Lani’s story in TRUSTING is my favorite. Geo is a SEAL K9 handler who’s grieving the loss of his mentor and friend. Lani’s just gone through a painful breakup with her childhood sweetheart. Together they find understanding, healing, and of course love.

Melanie Hansen doesn’t get nearly enough sleep. She loves all things coffee-related, including collecting mugs from every place she’s visited. After spending eighteen years as a military spouse, Melanie definitely considers herself a moving expert. She has lived and worked all over the country, and hopes to bring these rich and varied life experiences to the love stories she gets up in the wee hours to write. On her off-time, you can find Melanie watching baseball, reading or spending time with her husband and two teenage sons.

Melanie Hansen will be awarding a $50 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Sure! My name is Katharine E. Hamilton. I’ve been an indie author for 11 years now… I think. Ha! I have dappled in various genres, but you can find me mostly in the Sweet Contemporary Romance/Clean and Wholesome Genres on Amazon. I’m a born and raised Texan and currently live along the Texas coast with my husband and two boys. I have a 4-year-old and a 5 month old. They keep me pretty busy these days. I started writing in 2009 and published children’s books (3).

In 2015 I branched out and wrote an epic fantasy series called The Unfading Lands Series. In writing that series, I found myself loving the process of writing some of the side romances that take place throughout and decided in 2017 to write clean romances. I’ve been camped out in Sweet Romance ever since and I love it. Though I am working on a historical fiction novel right now that might pop up in the next year or so, I will mainly plant myself in Sweet Romance. I love it.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I’m an avid reader and crocheter. Yes, I said crochet. Haha. I am in the middle of an intense blanket project that keeps me busy in the evenings. I can’t sit and relax without keeping my hands busy, so it’s a nice hobby. I also tell my husband it helps keep me sane. Much like Rumpelstiltskin spins gold to stay sane, I crochet. It relaxes me. I’m able to think through some book ideas, go over my mental to-do list, or enjoy a show on television while being productive.

How to find time to write as a parent? I am an early bird. I'd rather work in the mornings and go to bed at a decent hour. I just can’t hang passed 10 PM… if I do, I’m a zombie the next day. So lately my routine has been waking up about 4 AM to give the baby his first morning bottle and I just stay up and work while the house is quiet, which is usually until about 6-7 AM. I’m able to knock out a lot of work in the mornings. And if I’m feeling inspired or trying to hit a deadline, I’ll incorporate some naptime work as well. It’s definitely a juggling act some days, but I also love being an independent author for the flexibility. I can always pause and step away without stressing too much about keeping a schedule.

What inspired you to write this book?

I’ve wanted to write a Christmas story for a while… a couple of years at least. And this year, well, 2020 hasn’t exactly been the easiest year for anyone, and I just wanted to make the holiday season a little more exciting and special. So I went for it.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’ve got lots of projects going on right now. For 2020, I have Mary & Bright (11/1/2020), and my Lighthearted Collection will receive a new release on 11/30/2020 called McCarthy Road. And then I’m currently writing a cowboy romance series called The Brothers of Hastings Ranch. Book Four, Lawrence, is scheduled for release on December 30th. And then January and February have a couple of books and audiobooks lined up as well. It’s a busy time for me right now.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

I love the name Mary. And I have yet to use that name in any of my other books because I KNEW I wanted to use it for a Christmas story and play off of that name for the title. And I wanted her to be the opposite of merry. Haha. So that sort of brought her to life for me, and I wanted the man in the story to be named Brighten, aka Bright, and be that little ray of sunshine that she isn’t expecting or wanting at times.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I wrote this book in September and it has had me ready for Christmas from the beginning. It’s just made me hopeful for the holidays and excited about ending 2020 on a positive note. I love the characters. I especially love Brighten. He’s a joy and he was a joy to write.

What are your top 10 favorite books/authors?

Oh man… this is a hard one. In no particular order… 1. Henry James 2. Jane Austen 3. Charles Dickens 4. Susanna Kearsley 5. Deanna Raybourn 6. Sherry Thomas 7. Paula Brackston 8. Francine Rivers 9. Nora Roberts 10. Clive Cussler

What book do you think everyone should read?

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers or Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

How long have you been writing? I’ve been writing since 2007, but have been published since 2009.

Do you see writing as a career?

I became a full-time writer in 2015, so yes, I do. I love what I do, and am thankful I can say it is my career.

What do you think about the current publishing market?

There is no better time to publish. Traditional publishing has hit a few snags lately, but the indie market is thriving. Whichever direction you choose, now is the time. Reading never goes out of style.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I love to read. I’m a big historical fiction fan. I also love epic love stories. Strong female characters. Witty and creative mysteries… I read a variety of different genres.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

I have a rowdy 4-year-old and a 5 month old. Oh, and a chihuahua. I’m not sure there is such a thing as quiet in my house. Haha. But I have learned to write with noise and without. I like the quiet when I can get some, but usually I have noise going on all around me.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

I am constantly working on multiple projects at once. If I run into a block or snag on one manuscript, I let it rest and move onto another one. Usually by the time I wrap up a few scenes in another one, I have fresh eyes to go back to the previous one and work out what I need to. Right now I have about 5 open manuscripts that I hop between. Advice they would give new authors? Finish the manuscript. You can’t do anything else until you FINISH what you’re working on. Don’t worry about making it perfect. You can’t and it won’t be. Editing and beta readers come later. Finish the story.

Describe your writing style.

I love dialogue in my stories. I use a BUNCH of dialogue. I feel like it propels the story forward while also helping define the characters’ personalities.

What are you currently reading?

I just received a box full of books today actually! I’m so excited! Though right now I’m in the middle of What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris. BUT I will tell you what I just snatched from the UPS man. Haha. Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas (This series is A-Mazing)
The Deadly Hours by Susanna Kearsley, C.S. Harris, Anna Lee Huber, and Christine Trent
The Anatomist’s Wife by Anna Lee Huber
The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V.E. Schwab
The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow
I’m going to be busy for a while, but I have a couple of road trips coming up, and if I’m not crocheting, I’ll be reading these glorious finds!

Melinda flipped her planner shut after drawing a heart next to the two names on the page on the notepaper. Another success. The strains of the “Wedding March” played by a string quartet filled the small flower-filled chapel. Guests rose from their seats to watch the petite bride glide down the aisle toward her handsome groom.

Across the aisle in a pew, a tall, well-built man with blonde hair cropped military style and molten brown eyes locked on hers. He gave Melinda a half nod before his gaze followed the bride. The pastor’s deep voice filled the room as he asked everyone to take their seats. He then turned to the couple to perform the ceremony.

After the newly married couple kissed, Melinda followed other guests in the receiving line to the bride and groom. She beamed. “Stacey and Will, it was a beautiful ceremony.”

Stacey was radiant. Will’s arm was curled around his new wife, holding her close to his side.

“Melinda, this day wouldn’t have been possible without you.” Stacey lovingly gazed at Will. “Thank you for introducing us.”

Melinda kissed her cheek. “It was my pleasure.”

Will lifted Stacey’s hand to his lips, grazing her ring finger. “I will tell all my single friends if they’re looking for love to give you a call.” His eyes twinkled. “You certainly have a knack for matchmaking.”

“You two made my job easy.” She looked over her shoulder. “You have more guests to greet, but I’ll see you during the reception.”

She strolled down the brick walkway to her car, content to see the love between Stacey and Will. Just as it was meant to be.

After making the short drive to the country club, Melinda parked in the crowded lot. As she crossed the parking area to the reception hall she daydreamed of how nice it would be to take off her pumps and walk barefoot. She reached for the brass knob on the carved wood door. Before she could turn the knob, it burst open. She took a step back. Her heel caught a crack in the stone step. She began to fall backward when strong hands caught her and held on tight.

A deep voice next to her ear said, “It’s okay, I’ve got you.”

Melinda looked up into warm brown eyes. It was the man from the chapel.

“Um, thank you.” She smoothed her hand over her simple navy-blue dress and then pushed a curl behind her ear. “I’m not sure what happened.”

“It looks like your heel got caught.”

She gave him a small smile. “It’s a good thing you were there to catch me.”

With a slight stiff bow, he said, “Adam Bell, at your service, ma’am.”

His face held little emotion, almost formal, she thought. People strolled past them into the building, but Melinda couldn’t help but notice he carried himself with a distinct military bearing. Unsure if he was being old-fashioned or teasing her, she said, “We should go inside.”

He crooked his arm and said, “I’d be happy to escort you safely through the door.”

With a small laugh Melinda placed her hand on his arm. In a soft southern drawl, she said, “Thank you, kind sir.”

“So, tell me, are you a friend of Stacey or Will?” he asked.

“I guess you could say both.” She looked at him. “I’m Melinda Phillips.”

His eyes grew wide. “You’re the matchmaker?”

“I am.” As they stepped through the doorway, she withdrew her hand. They made their way to the table with the seating chart. Melinda found her card and saw she was at table six. Adam picked up his card.

“I’m at table eight.” He glanced at her card. “It’s too bad we’re not seated at the same one. I don’t know a lot of people. I haven’t lived here long.”

She looked around the room. “I’ve lived here for a few years and everyone is really nice.”

“Good to know,” Adam said with a smile. “Can I buy you a drink?”

“Thank you, and then I can introduce you to the gang.” Melinda strolled toward the bar. Adam looked around and trailed after her. She understood his reticence. It was hard to get acquainted with a new group of people, especially when they seemed to be really tight knit. She still remembered what it had felt like when she moved to Chester. She fell in love with the small shore town and she had found the people in Connecticut weren’t that much different from Pennsylvania where she lived previously. Heck, they were a lot like her friends back in Beaufort, South Carolina where she had spent most of her summers as a kid.

THE SECRETS OF GABLE HOUSE

Please welcome my friend, Nancy Fraser, and her latest release,

THE SECRETS OF GABLE HOUSE

Can they unravel centuries-old secrets and set a spirit free?

Noah Miller is shocked to learn that an unknown great uncle has named him heir to the family fortune, including the residence known as Gable House. Built by Noah’s fifth-back grandfather, the house is ripe with family secrets and unusual occurrences.

Maggie Shephard has spent the past ten years researching the history of Willow-By-The-Sea, including that of her own ancestors. Considered an authority on New England history, she’s often sought out as a consultant. When Noah Miller asks for her help in acquainting him with both the house and his ancestors, she jumps at the chance to share her knowledge with the handsome architect.

Noah and Maggie have an immediate attraction to one another, made even more so by the time they spend together researching the Gable family history. The fact that each Gable male died an untimely and gruesome death, leads Noah and Maggie on a quest for the truth in hopes of setting a murderous spirit free.

Maggie Shephard raised her head and scanned the dozen or so people spread out around the library’s common area. Most were tourists, one or two were students from the nearby college, and then there was...him. While the others wore faded jeans and sweatshirts, he was dressed in a three-piece charcoal gray suit, likely costing more than her student loan payments. His dark brown hair held a hint of silver at the temples, the well-styled cut barely grazing the collar of his white dress shirt.

Totally out of place, he sat at the back of the room, his gaze intense and laser-focused on her.

She dropped her attention to her notes and back on her closing. “For those of you with questions, I’ll be around for another hour or so. Thank you so much for joining me for today’s presentation. Don’t forget to take a pamphlet from the back table as you exit the library.”

Maggie gathered her papers and then stepped down from the podium. When she looked up, he was there. “May I help you?”

He stuck out his hand. “I’m Noah Miller. Mr. Gallagher from Gallagher, Hastings, and West told me you were the ranking expert on all things related to the area’s history.”

She forced a faint smile to her lips, and placed her hand in his, immediately aware of the warmth his touch generated. The almost instantaneous reaction left her both surprised and intrigued.

“I’m flattered. Mr. Gallagher called earlier to say you’d be stopping by. I hope you didn’t mind sitting through the presentation.”

“No, I found it very interesting, in fact.”

“Mr. Gallagher also mentioned you are the new owner of Gable House.” When he nodded, she added, “I have to tell you, when we heard there was an heir, we were shocked to say the least.”

He shot her a quizzical look. “Why? Is the idea of my great uncle having family that surprising?”

“Truthfully? Yes. Your great uncle was a recluse. The few in town, most of them now in their eighties or nineties, who knew Henry Hastings in his younger years, don’t recall him ever mentioning family of any sort.”

“He had a will, so surely someone knew.”

She shrugged. “No doubt the will was many years old. I don’t think Henry had left the house in over a decade.”

“What about daily necessities?”

“The members of the historical society took turns running his errands. He had a housekeeping service come in every once in awhile. As a matter of fact, I believe it was one of their employees who discovered...uh—”

He raised his hand, interrupting her muddled explanation. “It’s okay. I’m aware of the circumstances of his death.”

“I don’t think anyone was surprised to hear he was gone,” she told him. “Especially given the history surrounding Gable House.”

His eyebrows arched, giving her a wider glimpse of his chocolate brown eyes, her comment obviously piquing his interest.

“History? What history?”

“Surely your immediate family has filled you in on some of the details.”

His expression hardened. His otherwise very attractive features pinching into a deep frown. “I have no immediate family, Miss...uh...”

“Shephard,” she filled in. “Maggie Shephard.”

He gave a curt nod. “Yes, of course. Gallagher gave me your name. Sorry. This whole situation has been a revelation to say the least, and a weird one at that.”

“Have you been to the house yet?” she asked.

“No. I have an appointment with a realtor at three.” He paused, and then asked, “Would you be willing to join me? I’d be happy to pay you for your time.”

“I don’t—”

“It would be nice to have an historian’s perspective on the future of the property.”

She had to admit, she was tempted, if only to see Noah Miller’s reaction to his great uncle’s home. “Okay, I can spare some time.”

“Shall I pick you up here at the library?” he asked.

Her first instinct was to accept. After all, Noah Miller was an extremely handsome man. And a welcome change from the locals she’d been fending off for years. However, he was also an unknown, a stranger in a small town where everyone knew everyone else.

“I can meet you there. I also live in Willow-By-The-Sea, within walking distance of your great uncle’s home.”

His rather docile expression lifted into a half-smile. “Well, then, I truly am getting first-hand expertise. A valuable commodity when you’re in unfamiliar territory.”
