DEVON BY CARRA COPELIN

By Caroline Clemmons

Dear Friends, have you been keeping up with the releases of the popular Guns For Hire Series? Another book just released on the 15th, DEVON, by Carra Copelin. I’ve known Carra for twenty years, maybe longer. We met at a Fort Worth, Texas writers group and became friends. But, let me tell you about DEVON.

Devon Black returns home after months on the trail. He finds his father dead and his mother barely alive. Before dying, she urges Devon to find “the thieving murderous devils” and make things right. Consumed by grief and anger, Devon vows to avenge his parents deaths, determined to track down the killer or killers.

Kerrie Appleton prepares for her father’s first sermon in the newly built church on Sunday morning, hoping it will be their best day in a long time. However, when her brother, Billy, returns, he reverts to his old ways. She sees a wanted poster for her brother which says he killed an older couple and stole their money.

Devon tracks Billy and his gang to the small town of Abilene, Texas, where he meets Kerrie Appleton. Together they work to plan the best way to capture Billy Appleton and his gang to keep Kerrie, ber father, and others safe.

Will Kerrie be able to soften Devon’s hardened heart and convince him that the future is their destiny?

JOSEPHINE DELIVERS FUN AND ADVENTURE

 By Caroline Clemmons

Reading a series set in a small town lets you become familiar with the characters and keep up with them as the series progresses. One of my favorite series is the Bride Brigade, consisting of seven books. Each prospective bride has a personality unique to her.

In this sweet historical western romance series, Lydia Harrison is upset at the number of men moving away from the town of Tarnation, Texas, because there are no unmarried women and they each want a wife. Lydia decides to do something. She takes her best friend, Sophie Gaston with her to her hometown in Virginia. Lydia places an ad in the newspaper stating her offer of travel and lodging to those selected to accompany her to Texas with the object of matrimony.

The first book of the series is JOSEPHINE, named after my grandmother. The setting is actually a lovely one in Palo Pinto County, Texas that my husband and I discovered on a Palo Pinto County Historical Society Spring Tour many years ago. I’m so glad we were able to take that tour because I fell in love with this location and have used it several times.

This is the newest cover
Blurb for Josephine

Josephine Nailor is desperate to escape a terrible situation. When the opportunity arises via a newspaper ad, she and her best friend slip away from their oppressive fathers and head for Richmond.  Neither can relax until they’re far away from their tiny hometown. With wealthy young widow Lydia Harrison’s help, Josephine and six other young women have a new life waiting in Tarnation, Texas.

Michael Buchanan is fairly content running his mercantile and being mayor of Tarnation. The town is dusty and tiny, but it’s growing. He believes it holds all he needs to be happy—except a wife. There are no available women in town, but he hopes Lydia Harrison’s Bride Brigade will offer a woman he can wed. He is immediately attracted to Josephine.

But Josephine has every reason to mistrust men in general and politicians in particular. Will her misgivings ruin her chance at happiness?

If you haven’t read this fun and adventure filled series, why not give JOSEPHINE a read?

ONE OF MY FAVORITE HEROES

By Caroline Clemmons

Welome Sheriff Jesse Cameron as our guest character today, the hero of JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Jesse, thank you for agreeing to our interview.

Thank you, ma’am. I’m honored to be invited, though I dinnae ken why your readers would be interested in the Harrigan County Sheriff.

I know you’re a Texas sheriff, but I detect an accent in your speech. Would you tell us from where you’ve come?

Aye, I came from Scotland. First, I worked as an indentured sailor for seven years to pay for my passage to America. I started my indentured service at fourteen—almost fifteen—because I could pass for eighteen, you ken? I was that tall for my age.

What was life like growing up in Scotland?

My family lived on a farm not far from Kelso. We raised sheep. Mum also had chickens and a few goats for milk. She made and sold her goat cheese. We also had a couple of cows. You can tell I didnae escape caring for the animals. We lived in a small cottage, but we enjoyed one another. I had a grand time growing up. I didnae mind working with Da on the farm, but that wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life.

Your leaving must have upset your parents.

Aye, they worried about me leaving so young. Mum and Da are great parents who understood my wish to leave and live in America. In fact, they will join me here after my Gran dies. She’s a grand lady, so no one is eager for that day to come.

What brought you to send for a mail order bride?

Several months back, I helped fight a grass fire on a local ranch. Volunteers barely saved the house, but much of the grass and some cattle were destroyed. A couple of people collapsed from the heat and stress. If not for a sudden downpour, more would have been lost, including men exhausted from fighting the fire. The sudden danger presented to so much land and so many people reminded me how fleeting life could be. I evaluated my life and realized it was time to settle down. I bought a house and sent for a bride. My best friend is my deputy, and he decided to send for a bride from the same matchmaker. Turned out our brides are cousins.

That sounds like a good result. Are you each pleased with your bride?

Aye, the plan worked out grand. My bride, Rosalin, is beautiful, regal, intelligent, and works hard to please me. I couldn’t be happier—except I feel like there’s something she’s hiding from me. I haven’t worked out what it could be, and she insists there’s nothing. She brought her nephew, who’s 8. He’s a good boy, but he has a lot of nightmares. My deputy is sure pleased with his bride, who is a pretty chatterbox.

Ma’am, I appreciate you having me here today, but I have to get back to work. Tell your readers if they’d like to learn more about me, check out my story in JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE at Amazon.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN...

 By Caroline Clemmons

Ever since my family had a German couple as landlords when I was a little girl in Bakersfield, California, I have been fascinated by the German language—and the country. Our landlords spoke German when nosy little girls were near. I suspect they hoped it would discourage me, but it only caused me to eavesdrop whenever I could. That wasn’t often. Of course, my mother would not have permitted it if she had known.

My fascination didn’t wane after my family moved back to Texas, but I couldn't do much to feed my obsession except read the encyclopedias. I took German 101 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The professor was an  exchange professor from Germany. His stories of his homeland increased my desire to visit there. Finally, after many years, my husband began traveling to Germany occasionally. I was able to tag along several times.

In the meantime, both our daughters had taken German classes. On one trip they accompanied us. Our oldest had her heart set on a genuine cuckoo clock. In my favorite city of Munich, she had practiced how to ask for one in a shop. The first place we tried didn’t have them, but the clerk gave us directions in German to a clock shop not far away. I could tell she spoke English and was humoring our daughter. With only our smattering of German, we were elated when we understood the directions and found the right shop. Sadly, now we couldn’t do it—use it or lose it! We lost it.

When I thought of starting a fresh historical western romance mail order bride series, I wanted the first brides to be German. The area I love most is Bavaria. So, Adelheid “Heidi” Roth became the first mail order bride for the new sweet series, the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides. Her groom is Gentry McRae. (You may notice that is not the name of the groom to whom she commits herself in the excerpt below.)

Heidi

Heidi is a beautiful blond of 25 and is 5’ 10” tall. Without consciously intending it, Heidi’s family takes advantage of her. Well, maybe her sister intends to do so. Although Heidi has a quick temper, she usually keeps it in check rather than create strife in her family. Her spoiled younger sister, Willhamina, makes no attempt to hide her feeling of superiority because she is married and Heidi is not.

Heidi's Bavarian Hometown

Several times recently, the local matchmaker has invited Heidi to visit her regarding Johann Meyer, a former resident who is now living in America. His mother also calls on Heidi. However, Heidi wants to find a husband on her own. One day, insults go too far and Heidi’s control snaps. She throws her pride and her apron aside and goes to the matchmaker.

Here the excerpt of the result:

Although she hated to leave her parents, she was tired of her family members criticizing her. If she needed to support herself, she could cook and sew and clean and do accounts. Her heart pounded so loud she thought Mrs. Heinz must hear it.

Heidi took a deep breath. “I believe Johann and I can make a good marriage.”

The matchmaker leaned back and clasped her hands to her chest. “Wonderful, my dear! You are a beautiful woman and a good daughter. I know how hard you work to help your mother, and even find time to help Mr. Schneider with his bookkeeping.”

“Thank you,” was all Heidi could say.

“I am so pleased you will have your own home—and it sounds like a very nice one. I have your funds and your travel arrangements. Mrs. Meyer was so sure you would accept that she has given me your tickets and the cash you’ll need for incidentals.”

Heidi cleared her throat to remove the lump that had lodged there. “You mean… you mean I am supposed to leave immediately?”

Mrs. Heinz held up a hand in a motion to halt. “You must get to your ship by the end of the month. To do so, you must leave in fourteen days. Please write Johann a letter today while you are here. I will mail it immediately so he will have it before you arrive.” She handed Heidi several sheets of paper and set the inkwell and pen near her.

Gentry, groom by default

Heidi travels for weeks to reach Harrigan Springs, Texas. When she arrives, huge surprises await her. If you haven’t read GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, I hope you’ll do so and then follow the series. You don't need to read the books in order, but you'll enjoy them more if you do. Each book is available in e-book and print. They are all enrolled in Kindle Unlimited. Here’s the Amazon link for GENTRY.

A HORRIBLE THING HAPPENED

By Caroline Clemmons

A terrible and baffling problem occurred with my new book, KEITH AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. The wrong file was uploaded to Amazon! I didn’t realize what had happened until I saw a review that mentioned how many error there were in the book.

What?

What? But, sure enough, when I checked I was appalled—and humiliated!

The edited file had disappeared, so we re-edited the book and uploaded the new, corrected file to Amazon. If you purchased one of the error-filled copies, I sincerely apologize. On the other hand, if you haven’t yet read KEITH, now is the perfect time. Here’s the buy link:

https://www.amazon.com/Order-Bride-Texas-Country-Brides-ebook/dp/B0BZDT6Q1J/

I love the characters in this book—except for the villains, of course. Even bad guys have their place in a story. The orphans Keith and Elliana adopt create a family feeling. For me, children enliven a story, just as they do in life. I’m certainly grateful for our two daughters! The house is gorgeous. In case you think no one could get such a wonderful home at a bargain, let me tell you that I once knew a couple who did. They had a party there soon after they moved in. The only furniture in the main part of the home were folding chairs and a couple of folding tables they borrowed from their church.

In addition to the review by Linda Lou that alerted me to the errors in my book (shudder), there are many, many good reviews, such as these:

Another gem of a story in this series and hoping there will be more.”

“Keith and the Mail Order Bride was so good I read it all in half a day. Can’t wait for the authors other books.”

“So refreshing to read new book by Caroline Clemmons! As always,, well-written, good plot, setting, and characters.

"Kept me up reading well past my bedtime!”

I’m at work on the next book in the series, which is about Sid Garton, owner of Garton’s Mercantile. I’m enjoying the book, and hope your will, too.

Thanks for stopping by.

COME TO THE PARTY!

 By Caroline Clemmons

My exciting news is that LEVI AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE released Friday, April 21, and you're invited to attend the party on Facebook at the Caroline's Cuties group page. I love Levi's story and hope you will, too. He's a good guy, even if he doesn't quite understand the working of the female mind.

This is book 4 in the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Bride Series set in the fictitious town of Harrigan Springs near Bandera and Medina. That is a pleasant part of Texas with rolling hills and lovely valleys with creeks and rivers.

In addition to the westward movement from Easterners, many groups from Germany, Norway, and Alsace came directly to this area of Texas. Even after over two hundred years since these Europeans settled here, one can still hear other languages spoken. One of our friends who grew up there spoke only German until he started school. Of course, the first Europeans leave their stamp on the native population were the Spanish, many of whose missions remain.

Levi Iverson was born in Norway, although he left there with his family when he was only four. He came to Harrigan Springs to open a smithy and gun repair business. Soon he also owned the nearby livery stable, which he improved with a more substantial building and more horses. Quietly, he has expanded his real estate holdings. He is a private person and a hard worker who is respected and well-liked by the community members. He's also a compassionate person who believes in fairness. He only wants to help Maeve out of a difficult position, but is propelled into a tough spot.

Although Levi has become prosperous, Maeve Kelly is virtually penniless. When her mother died, Maeve sold their farm and left Ireland to join her sister and brother in law in New York City. After months there, she is terribly discouraged by the way Irish are treated and where they work and live. She wants a husband and a family, but sees no future in her current circumstances. She loves her sister, but decides the only way to accomplish her goal is to become a mail order bride. When she meets the odious man she’s supposed to marry, she refuses. You would, too. But what is she to do instead? How can she repay the fare he sent her? She insists on earning her way, not in charity.

This is a sweet clean historical western romance set in a small town in 1876.

Here’s the buy link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BZDT6Q1J

A short excerpt:

(Levi is speaking) “Guess I will enjoy having someone cook meals for me and clean my home. Eating out occasionally is all right, but gets tiresome. Many days I’m too tired to bother. Coming home to find a meal waiting for me sounds pretty good. That is, as long as there are no strings attached.”

Jesse’s laughter rumbled. “Levi, anytime a woman’s involved, there are always strings dangling to tangle, twist, and tie up a man. In my case with Rosalin, it’s a lucky thing. Maybe you’ll enjoy having a housekeeper more than you think you will.”

He frowned at Jesse’s prediction. “Maybe, but I hope I haven’t made a giant mistake.”

 Come to our party!

NEW PREORDER -- JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE

Join me in announcing JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE is now available for preorder from Amazon for release on September 29. This is book 2 of the sweet, small town, family-oriented Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides Series. It will be available in e-book and print, and will be enrolled in Kindle Unlimited.

https://www.amazon.com/Jesse-Order-Bride-Caroline-Clemmons-ebook/dp/B0BD64JC1D/

Book 2 of the series

Sheriff Jesse Cameron is from Scotland. He believes in the law and in justice, and does his best to serve Harrigan County citizens. Rosalin Arnold hates the way she’s forced to live and vows to improve her life. After months of plotting, she seizes her chance.

Here’s the blurb:

What will happen when her lawman husband learns the truth about her criminal past?

Sheriff Jesse Cameron is dedicated to uphold the law of his adopted country. After leaving Scotland, he came to Texas, and learned he liked the place and the people—at least, most of them. He keeps Harrigan County free of troublemakers with his “strict but fair” policy. Now that he has a steady job and has bought a house, he figures it’s time to find a wife and start a family. He and his best friend write to the same matchmaker, hoping their brides will be sisters or friends. Jesse hopes his wife will provide a peaceful home and welcome him each evening with a good meal and a warm smile.

Growing up in an orphanage left Rosalin Arnold too naïve to avoid being trapped in the clutches of an evil man who has her picking pockets. Those who’ve tried to escape him have always failed and were severely punished—or killed. In spite of that, Rosalin has been plotting to get away and seizes her chance to escape. She takes her best friend with her, and also an adorable boy of eight. All she and her friends want is a home where they can live without constant fear. She prays she has successfully evaded the devil who has tentacles everywhere.

What will happen when her past catches up with her, and she’s forced to confess everything to Jesse? Of course Jesse will defend her, but will he forgive her lies?

Rosalin Arnold

I hope you’ll preorder JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. This entire series is set in fictional Harrigan County, which I squeezed in between the real Bandera and Medina Counties. I like this part of Texas, and hope you’ll enjoy visiting via reading. Books open new worlds.

HOW WELL CAN YOU PRETEND?

Remember the movie “Catch Me If You Can”, about the man who successfully pretended to be a variety of professions—from co-pilot to physician? Imagine the organized (and frightening) mind it took to pull off those feats. Posing as someone you aren’t must be nerve wracking even for a sociopath. I suppose con men and swindlers may live an extended charade as a way of life. Do you wonder if they ever start to believe they’re who they pretend to be?

In the upcoming Christmas story MAIL ORDER GLORIA: IMPOSTOR FOR CHRISTMAS, book 7, now available for preorder, Gloria is given an amazing opportunity. She’s yearned for a different life, something she’d dreamed of but hasn’t been able to manage on her own. Although she’d been desperate to get away from her life in Georgia, she is both relieved and scared by her opportunity. There’s a catch—isn’t there always? For at least a short while, Gloria must pretend to be her friend, Juliet. Gloria’s friend extracts a promise that she won’t reveal her true identity until Juliet sends word.

Here’s the description of MAIL ORDER GLORIA.

A desperate woman…

A distrustful rancher with a secret…

And a boy in need of a family.

Orphaned at an early age and sent to live with her relatives, Gloria Tabor is unhappy with her treatment from her snobby aunt and spiteful cousin. In desperation, Gloria leaves her only relatives’ home. No matter what happens, she vows she will be more forceful and stronger in the future. No more timid and shy wallflower. But with her tiny savings, where is she to go? The question is sobering, but she is determined she will not return to her kin’s home.

While deliberating her lack of choice, she overhears a young man comforting a sobbing woman that she recognizes as a friend from school. After a few minutes of conversation with them, the young woman offers Gloria the chance to escape to a ranch in Texas as a mail order bride. In exchange, Gloria must promise not to divulge her real identity until the couple has successfully eloped and managed reconciliation with the friend’s father. Though hating the idea of lying, Gloria is too relieved at the opportunity to say no.

When she changes trains on the way to her prospective groom, Gloria rescues a ten-year-old boy from a policeman threatening to take the boy to the local orphanage. Heart filled with sympathy for the homeless child, she intercedes. Later, she wonders how her prospective groom will react to her bringing a child with her, especially after she learns his propensity for “finding” money.

Texas rancher Dwight Price is a stickler for honesty. Once someone has lost his confidence, he won’t trust the person again. He strives to live up to his beliefs. On the one hand, he isn’t certain he wants to wed the daughter of his father’s oldest friend. On the other hand, he looks forward to a life of quiet harmony with his mail order bride.

Near Christmas, Gloria gets a telegram releasing her from her promise. Dwight wants to know who sent the wire and why. Her explanation destroys the faith he had in her—and then his own secret crops up.

Can these two overcome the damage to their relationship or will each be alone again?

If you like sweet western historical romance, you’ll enjoy MAIL ORDER GLORIA. This is a stand-alone, complete sweet western historical romance novella set in 1880.

Enjoy an excerpt of when Gloria and Dwight’s first meet:

The stage slowed and came to a stop in a cloud of dust. Gloria sat paralyzed by a myriad of thoughts. What if her groom didn’t accept her? What if he was angry she’d brought Mike? What if he was mean or a drunk? His letters had sounded nice, but he could have lied.

Mike stared at her. “You’re awful pale. You gonna be sick or something?”

She sighed and relaxed her grip on the seat. “I’ll be fine, but thank you for asking.”

Mr. Kelly reached for the door. “If you’ll excuse me, I’ll get out and then help you, Miss Forest.” He climbed to the ground and then turned to extend his hand to her.

“Thank you, Mr. Kelly. You’ve been very kind.”

Mike followed her and jumped to the ground. He looked around. “Not a big town, is it?”

The man smiled at Mike. “Big for these parts. Hasn’t been long since they had to fight Indians and renegades hereabouts. Well, I’ll bid you good day and good luck.” He tipped his hat and reached for his suitcase.

She became aware of a group of people waiting on the board sidewalk. The younger of the two men caught her eye. He was tall and wore a black suit with a white shirt and an odd black tie that tied in front. Goodness, but if he’d smile he’d be handsome.

The couple with him must be his parents and the boy his son, Tommy. The smiling man she supposed to be Dwight Price’s father looked like an older version of him, though not as robust. The woman smiled and her face displayed the lines to prove she smiled often. Tommy was tall for his age.

The man she thought to be Dwight stepped forward. “Juliet?...Miss Forest?”

She avoided lying by not answering the question. “You must be Dwight Price. I’m pleased to finally be here.” She put an arm around Mike’s shoulders. “This is my newly adopted son, Mike.”

Dwight’s face clouded. “Son? I had no idea.”

Mike tried to scoot behind her, but she held on to his shoulders.

“He and I met in Chattanooga and he agreed to become my son. Since you have a son near the same age, I thought you wouldn’t mind.”

Mike swallowed hard. “Sh-She s-sa-saved me from the orphanage. She said I can call her Mama.”

After what seemed like a long time, but probably was only a couple of seconds, Dwight offered her his arm. “Come and meet the family. You, too, Mike.”

She pulled Mike forward as they stepped onto the boardwalk.

“This is my mother, Orinda Mae.”

The woman pulled Gloria into a big hug. “I’m so glad you’re here. You just call me mama.” She released her and grabbed Mike’s upper arms. “You call me Grandma.”

Mike swallowed hard again. “R-Really? I can call you Grandma?”

“You sure can. I’m pleased Juliet brought you. I hear orphanages are awful places, though they are necessary.”

Dwight guided her to his father. “Juliet, you may remember my father, Jeff.”

She smiled at the man. “I was a different person then.” Not a lie but it felt like one.

Misrepresenting herself to these nice people knotted her stomach. This appeared to be the kind of family she’d always hoped would include her. She’d enjoy this life as long as she could. No matter what happened, she’d have good memories. Even if they sent her away when they learned the truth, perhaps they’d let Mike stay on the ranch.

Papa Price beamed at her. “It’s been a long time, but you were pretty then and you are now. I remember you as being a real sweet girl.”

“Thank you for saying so. I’ll try not to disappoint you.” She’d do everything she could to make herself fit into the family.

“You call me Papa or Jeff—whichever makes you comfortable.”

Tears pricked her eyelids. How she’d missed her own father. “I’d like to call you Papa if you’re sure.”

He leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “That’d please me.”

Papa extended his hand to Mike. “Glad to have you. Call me Grandpa.”

“Thank you, sir.” Mike grinned. “I mean Grandpa.”

Dwight beamed at the young boy who was next in the line of people waiting. “This is my son, Tommy. He and Mike should get along well since they’re about the same age.”

Tommy smiled at her. “I’m eight now. Can I call you Mama?”

“Of course you may. Can I call you Tommy?”

Tommy giggled.

Mike shrugged. “I’m ten.” In a stage whisper, he added, “She says a lot of funny things.”

I love this story and hope readers will share my enjoyment. Preorder now for a December 3rd release. You remember the magic of preorder—select the book now and poof! It will appear in your e-reader like magic on release day. That seems miraculous to me.

CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX

 By Bonnie Edwards

Bonnie Edwards, Author

How did CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX come about?

I’d completed my trilogy called Love at Christmas, set in Canada. Three stories of love between Canadian heroines and their American heroes. The first book in that series is NOT-SO-BLUE CHRISTMAS. But, alas, during the writing of these fun, warm stories, a perfectly good ex-husband, who loved his daughters, was left behind without a love of his own.

And anyone who writes or reads romance knows we can’t have that, can we?

Meanwhile, for another series (Return to Welcome) I’d created a small town called Welcome, WA where I’d written three full length novels starting with FINDING MERCY.

I tapped my chin wondering what to do, what to do…and decided Max Whyte had no choice but to move there!

CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX combines characters from both series and a brand new heroine with spunk and twin three-year-old boys. Laughs, love, and second chances abound in Christmas to the Max.

We see characters from both series and even have a mean character get her comeuppance. I couldn’t resist!

Rest assured, no one has to read any of the other books to enjoy CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX…it is definitely a standalone.

A stand-alone Return to Welcome Novel: CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX brings two charming and romantic series together! Max Whyte (LOVE AT CHRISTMAS) moves to Welcome, WA. (Return to Welcome)

Max Whyte moves to Welcome WA to live closer to his daughters after their mother remarries. He wants to fix up an old home, settle into his new position at an IT firm, and try not to think about turning forty alone.

Burned by a single mother in the past, he vows not to get tangled with another woman with children. When he saves the life of a small boy, he finds himself tangled in more ways than he could imagine.

When the boy’s mother turns out to be the perfect person to do his renovations, Max has trouble keeping his personal feelings out of their employer/employee relationship.

Kaylin Simpson has returned to Welcome to give her boys the kind of home she wanted as a child. She needs a fresh, stable start and wants to run her own business. Her three-year-old twins keep her hopping, but after she finishes the renovations for Max, she hopes to have her life well in hand.

Max is drawn to Kaylin and her adorable twin boys. Her wit and feisty spirit pull at his heartstrings until he realizes being a stepfather is never what he wanted.

Christmas in Welcome can be a time to heal and move forward and Max and Kaylin must set aside their old hurts to allow love to blossom.

Kaylin Simpson loved her twins. She truly, really, did. But some days she could scream until her throat collapsed and they wouldn’t hear a thing. She’d thought two two-year-olds were hard. Having three-year-olds was a brand-new level of hell. They talked back, got stubborn, and were more curious. And taller, stronger, capable of climbing onto chairs and getting into cupboards.

And they were faster.

It was being faster that would kill her one day. Or them. Whatever. Someone would be dead.

Right now, Brody was telling a little girl to go down the slide when she clearly didn’t want to. The poor child looked scared and Brody yelling in her ear wasn’t helping.

“Brody, please let the little girl take a breath so she’s not so scared. And DON’T PUSH!” But he did, and Kaylin dashed for the end of the slide to catch the wailing child.

Too late, she realized she’d taken her other eye off Taylor. She scooped up the girl before she landed on the ground, and then spun her head to scan for her other boy.

There. By the swings. “Taylor! Stop right THERE!” But he didn’t.

No, not her Taylor. He turned his head, glanced at her with a devilish grin and dashed for the road. Chase. He wanted to play chase.

In traffic.

Kaylin set the girl on her feet and ran after Taylor who’d already stepped onto the road. A car took the curve on Cross Street too quickly and Kaylin screamed her boy’s name. Screamed it again. And again…

A man, tall, dark-haired, and with broad shoulders got there just before Taylor ran headlong into the car’s path. Kaylin’s heart stalled and her eyes stung.

Gasping for breath, she nearly collided with the big man who cradled her son in his arms, his large palm covering Taylor’s head in a protective move. Taylor didn’t seem to understand what had happened until he looked up into the stranger’s face.

And screamed blue murder an inch from the man’s nose.

Tires screeched as the driver slammed on the brakes. A woman opened the passenger side window. “Oh, my Lord! Did I hit him?” Her eyes were terror-filled, and her voice trembled.

The man shook his head and seemed to hold tighter to Taylor as he bent toward the opened car window. “No,” he said. “But you took that curve pretty fast.” He didn’t yell it, the way Kaylin wanted to, but he got his point across.

The woman looked shaken and chastened. She eased the car to the curb and rested her head on the steering wheel. She’d been as badly shaken as Kaylin and the stranger.

A sudden screech from behind her had Kaylin spinning to see where it had come from. “Brody! Don’t you dare!”

She snatched Taylor from the stranger’s arms and lumbered under his weight back toward the swings where Brody was attempting to climb onto the big kids’ swing. He’d been complaining for weeks about the baby swings and she wasn’t sure how much longer he’d agree to use them.

She was still shaking over the miss with the car and wanted, more than anything, to get these boys out of this park and home where she could contain them.

If only she had the energy. She let Taylor slide to the ground and clasped his hand firmly as she walked the rest of the way toward the swing set. “We’re going home,” she announced in her most commanding tone, “as soon as I thank that man for saving Taylor’s life.”

Brody, for once, looked contrite. “I saw, Momma. He’s over dere.” And her boy pointed to a picnic bench that faced the river.

The man sat atop the table alone. His silhouette against the light showed broad shoulders that tapered to a trim waist. She already knew he could move like lightning when he needed to. His hair was trim on the sides but had some length on top. Odd that he’d be alone in a park on a lovely morning. Most people were jogging along the riverside trail or in the playpark like she’d been.

As she walked toward him, he pulled out his phone and started thumbing the screen as he scanned it. She hadn’t seen him here before, and she recognized a lot of the regular park users.

She used to know a lot of people in Welcome when she was a kid. And he wasn’t one of them, either.

Correction. Her aunt and uncle had known a lot of people here. She’d only been a summer visitor, so she’d been limited to knowing some of the neighborhood children. Still, Welcome was where her most carefree memories rested. Even though her aunt and uncle had retired to Arizona, it was Welcome that had called to her when she’d needed to make a change in her life.

Returning to Welcome last month hadn’t been as easy as she’d expected. Her business hadn’t taken off the way she’d hoped, and daycare was more expensive than she’d planned for. She certainly could not take her kids to work. Construction sites were not safe for curious children.

Some of the people she remembered in Welcome gossiped and held grudges, but for the most part, people here were okay. Like this man who’d jumped into action for a total stranger. Gratitude made her heart lighter than it had been in weeks.

She had her boys safe and sound. That was what mattered.

“Hello,” she said as she pulled alongside the picnic bench. Both boys for once, were silent, as the man raised his gaze to assess her.

“Yes?” He made a face as if she’d interrupted something important.

“I wanted to thank you for what you did. I’m still shaking and I’m sure I never would’ve got there in time.” She’d been two steps away, but still, they were the longest two strides ever.

His gaze raked the twins and his eyebrows rose. “You’ve got your hands full, but next time keep a closer watch on them. I won’t always be around for back-up.”

Typical non-parent, always certain children could be corralled or held back or kept safe every second of every day and that they listened. Hah!

Kaylin backed up a step. “Sure, I’ll keep a tighter grip. Maybe tether them to a stake in the ground. Keep them in the basement in cages, maybe. You’ve given me a lot to think about in regard to keeping my children safe.” She raised her right eyebrow and glared at the know-it-all. “Thanks for that, too.”
