INTERVIEW WITH PRISCILLA BRADFORD

 By Caroline Clemmons

Please welcome Priscilla Bradford, heroine of QUINN AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Priscilla, thank you for agreeing to an interview today.

Priscilla, folding her hands in her lap: Thank you for inviting me. I don’t quite understand the reason for your invitation.

Priscilla Bradford

Me: Readers like to know more about the characters about whom they read. More information than can be included in the book. For instance, where did you attend school?

Priscilla: Mrs. Dempsey’s School for Young Ladies. It was a boarding school but only a few blocks from my home, so I didn’t board there. Entry into the school was limited to those she called of "good families." My father was a descendant of William Bradford of the Mayflower colony. The curriculum was quite rigid, preparing students to entertain and manage a large household after marriage. The staff thought students would marry soon after graduation. I’m afraid I was a disappointment to Mrs. Dempsey because I didn’t marry right away.

Me: You’re a beautiful woman who must have had many beaus. Did none of them suit you?

Priscilla: I confess I found them superficial and more interested in obtaining the heir and a spare than in the needs of their wife. I didn’t enjoy being viewed as a brood mare, so to speak. At least, that’s what it seemed to me. I realize now that was my mistake.

Me: What brought you to this conclusion?

Priscilla heaves a big sigh: I didn’t realize I would lose everything except my brother, Richard. We had never considered that our livelihood was in jeopardy.

Me: My goodness, what happened?

Priscilla: First, Papa’s business burned to the ground. Then, we discovered he had let the fire insurance lapse to conserve money. He was so devastated by his failure that he shot himself. Richard was the one who found him, so I was spared that, at least.

Me: Goodness, that must have been terrible for you and your brother.

Priscilla: A staggering blow, but not the end of trouble. Immediately after the funeral, a banker came to tell us that our father’s loan payments were long overdue. We had no idea Papa had mortgaged the house. Bradford House had been in the family since just after the American Revolution.

Me: That must have been a devastating shock. What did you do?

Priscilla: What could we do? We had no close relatives. Each of our parents was an only child. The banker gave us a few days to clear our personal things from the house. The furnishings were part of the loan. Richard helped me gather my things into two trunks. We moved to a boarding house. Richard wanted me to remain there until he could rent a small house for us, but I wanted to escape all the sad memories.

Me: I don’t blame you, dear. How did you accomplish your escape?

Priscilla: I have accepted the invitation of a man in Texas to become his mail order wife.

Me: Aren’t you afraid of who the groom might be?

Priscilla: Terrified, but I’m determined to have my own home and children. This man named Quinn McRae lives on a ranch with a cook/housekeeper. That sounds fairly secure, and welcome since my cooking and cleaning skills are lacking.

Me: You’re a brave woman, Priscilla, and I wish you the very best.

Okay, so I admit it, I'm a true romantic at heart, and I've always been a sucker for a good, clean love story with a happy ending. My favorite stories involve spunky but sweet heroines, strong, swoon-worthy guys who aren't afraid to take charge ... oh, and a dog in the mix never hurt either. So guess what? Those are the type of stories I write! Just in case you're curious, I live in the beautiful mountains of North Idaho with my hubby of 30 years and our adorable Beagle mix Stella, one of the many rescue pups I've adopted over the years.

When I'm not reading or plotting my next novel, I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, going for hikes, or soaking in my hot tub--hands down the best place to read--print anyway. I do housework when I must and laundry when we run out of clean underwear. So enough about me. If you want to know more visit my website at www.ktraineromance.com. WEATHER CAN BE A WRITER'S FRIEND

by Caroline Clemmons

Do you live where the winter storm has locked you indoors? Lovely if you don’t need to leave home. Here in North Central Texas, we recently had “thunder sleet”(a new term for me) that left two inches of ice. We were housebound for several days. Being iced in  was a cozy treat for me, and a good time to snuggle with a cup of hot chocolate, a good book...and my husband. Our pets also gathered around for cuddle time. Of course, I worry about those who have to commute in that kind of weather—doctors, nurses, paramedics, police, firemen, etc.

Weather often plays a part in my romance books. Bad weather can isolate a couple, present a huge obstacle, or propel the story forward. Think of the tornado in THE WIZARD OF OZ, which certainly moved that story forward (no pun intended).

A storm that starts as rain, then sleet, then heavy snow is definitely a character in HIGH STAKES BRIDE. The inclement weather helps the heroine, Alice Price, escape from the two men pursuing her. That is, with the aid of rancher Zach Stone. What could be cozier than being snowed in a warm cabin with a kind and handsome man? There are a few surprises for Alice Price and Zach Stone: (1) the battered little boy who looks as if he and soap are strangers, (2) his injured dog, and (3) the biggest surprise...the dead man on the cabin floor.

Those aren’t the only surprises in store for either Zach or Alice. She’s one of my favorite heroines. Like me, she is incident prone. I’ve never dyed my own hair the peculiar color Alice did, but I once accidentally dyed Darling Daughter 2’s hair lavender. Talk about panic! Whew, no wonder she won’t let me color her hair now.

Here’s a blurb about HIGH STAKES BRIDE:

Now that her stepfather has died and can no longer protect her, Alice Price is on the run from two stepbrothers who wagered her in a high stakes poker game. But she’s only been off her stepfather’s ranch once in over twenty years and has no sense of the landscape or direction. Determined to catch the stage to Atlanta, she has two mules loaded with her belongings. From the first, she encounters one setback after another. She is certain fate has dealt her a losing hand...until she teams up with Zach Stone.

Zach is through with any woman not related to him. He camps out for a little time alone before he heads home and admits he’s been jilted by his mail-order bride. When he meets Alice and learns she is on the run, he lets her tag along with him. Their ride through a freezing storm when she is already exhausted leaves Alice with a case of pneumonia. Obviously, she needs some place safe where she can recover. That’s when Zach comes up with a crazy plan--Alice can pretend to be his mail-order bride until she recovers, make his family hate her, then he’ll send her away Sounds easy enough.

Alice and Zach find a young boy named Seth in Zach's old cabin. In order to convince the boy he won't be sent to an orphanage, Zach hires him to be his new ranch hand. Seth’s dog, Harry, accompanies the boy everywhere. Life appears rosy, but lies tangle Zach and Alice into a web of deceit that grows more and more complicated.

Seth

Of course, HIGH STAKES BRIDE, Men of Stone Mountain, Book 2, is available in print and e-book and is enrolled in Kindle Unlimited. Readers have loved this book. If you aren’t familiar with it, I hope you’ll read it now. too.  Here’s the url at Amazon:

Mary Alice Price

Here’s an excerpt from HIGH STAKES BRIDE of when Zach meets Alice while he’s camped out:

Zach slipped into the bedroll and waited, pistol in hand. He feigned sleep, wondering what kind of man tarried nearby. Whoever it was could have picked Zach off, so the sidewinder must not have murder on his mind.

Probably up to no good hiding out like that, though, because any Westerner would share his campfire and vittles with anyone who rode into camp. Zach wriggled into a comfortable spot and lay motionless. Anger at recent events helped him remain awake.

The footfalls came so softly he almost missed them. He opened his eyes a slit, but enough to see a thin shadow move toward the fire. About then heavy clouds overhead parted and the moonlight revealed a boy who scooped up a slice of bacon and slid it into his mouth.

The culprit set Zach’s tin plate on the ground near the fire, ladled beans into it, and picked up a fork. He squatted down and balanced the plate on his knees before he commenced eating. Zach noticed he kept his left hand in his pocket the whole time.

Something must be wrong with the thief’s left arm.  Looked too young for it to have been a casualty of the War. Lots of other ways to get hurt out here. Whatever had happened to his left arm, his right one worked well enough. He forked food into his mouth like he hadn’t eaten in a week.

Zach let him shovel beans for a few minutes. Crook or not, anyone that hungry deserved a meal. When the kid stopped eating, Zach couldn’t figure out what he was doing.  It looked as if he used the fork to scratch around on the ground, so he must have eaten his fill. Zach slipped his hand from beneath the cover and cocked the pistol.

“Hold it right there, son. I’d like to know why you’re eating without at least a howdy to the man who provided the food.”

The boy paused, then set the plate down slowly. “I left money here on a rock to pay for it.”

Odd sounding voice, but the kid was probably scared. Zach slipped from his bedroll and stood, but kept his gun pointed at the food robber. “Maybe.”

Zach walked toward the kid, careful to train his gaze so the firelight didn’t dim his eyesight. Sure enough, he spotted a couple of coins on the rock beside his pot of beans, or what remained of them, and his empty plate.

He faced the intruder. “Why not just come into camp earlier instead of sneaking in after you thought I was asleep?”

“I—I was afraid you weren’t friendly.”

Zach thought he also heard the kid mutter what sounded like “...or maybe too friendly.” Must be the wind, he thought, as he neared the boy.

Zach motioned with his free hand. “I don’t begrudge anyone food, but I hate dishonesty and sneaking around.  Stand up so I can see you.”

The kid stood, hat low over his face and his good hand clenched.

Zach reached to push the brim back. “What’s your name?”

The kid stepped forward. “None of your business, mister.”

A fistful of sand hit Zach’s face. He heard his assailant run. Mad as the devil, Zach brushed grit from his eyes and set out in pursuit. The kid was fast, he’d give him that, but so was Zach. His longer legs narrowed the distance between them.  With a running lunge, he tackled the kid.

“Oof. Let me go.” The lad was all wriggles and kicking feet as he squirmed trying to escape.

Zach wasn’t about to let that happen. They rolled in the dirt. In one move Zach pinned the boy’s good arm. The hat fell aside and a mass of curls spilled around the kid’s face.

His jacket parted and unmistakable curves pushed upward where Zach’s other hand rested. Zach stared in disbelief. Registering his hand pressed against a heavenly mound shocked him and he jerked his paw away.

“Well, I’ll be damned. You’re not a boy.”

QUINN IS HERE!

By Caroline Clemmons

This is a wonderful day! QUINN AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE released today. QUINN is book 3 in the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides Series. I am super excited about this book. This is a sweet historical western romance. If you read GENTRY, you’ll recognize that Quinn is his younger brother, although each book is stand alone.

Quinn is a good man with a tortured soul that causes him to… umm, to be less than he should be. After fifteen years apart, he is with his two older brothers, something he’s yearned for the entire time apart. He is a step closer to achieving his goal of owning a ranch. First, he has a lot to learn—and a secret to share.

Priscilla Bradford is a well-bred Boston woman to whom fate has dealt a horrific blow. The tragedy might break most women, but not Priscilla. Her quiet, ladylike behavior masks her strength and willpower.

Here’s the blurb:

Priscilla Bradford is determined she and Quinn McRae will have a happy marriage—all she has to do is convince him.

Priscilla Bradford’s once-impressive family has fallen on desperate times. She and her brother have lost everything. Against her brother’s wishes, she leaves Boston to become a mail order bride to a man in Texas. She’s relieved when she arrives and finds her groom is a handsome and charming man. His family welcomes her—at last, she feels part of a loving, happy family. But her husband soon behaves as if he were two people. She’s certain he’s a good man, and is determined to discover the reason for his mysterious behavior.

Quinn McRae is overjoyed to reunite with his brothers after being apart for fifteen years. They don’t understand why he doesn’t fit into ranch life on their terms. How can he explain the heartbreaking event that continues to create his horrific nightmares? He can’t—at least, not without revealing the secret he believes would cause them to send him packing. In addition to his internal battle, a local bully is determined to kill Quinn and his brothers.

How will Quinn overcome the bully’s attempts to destroy his family? Can Priscilla and Quinn conquer his doubts to become the happy couple of her dreams?

Priscilla Bradford McRae

Here’s an excerpt when Priscilla urges Quinn to be more gracious to his brother Gentry:

“Easy for you to say, I’m out there working like a dog in this weather while you’re in here living like the lady of the manor. Isn’t that the way you grew up? No worries, nothing but parties and fancy clothes all your life.” His tone was pleasant but his words were spoken to sting.

Why had she bothered? She grabbed a piece of paper from her pocket and waved it as if it was a fan open in her hand while she gestured delicately with the other hand. With a coy smile, she gave her impression of a Southern belle.

“I do apologize, Quinn shugah. Of course, I grew up in fine silks and satins, waited on hand and foot, attended fancy balls and dinners, and besieged by beaus.” She fluttered her eyelashes. “Why, a big, str-ron-n-g man like you must wonder why someone like little ol’e me would leave a life of leisure and privilege to become a mail order bride.” She reached up to pat his cheek. “Bless. Your. Heart.”

Narrowing her eyes, she changed to a tone of disgust. “Sometimes you are an arrogant idiot!” She turned and sashayed into the next room.

I hope you’ll give QUINN AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE a read. I think you’ll enjoy it. In fact, I think you'll enjoy all three of the books of this series. Let me know whether you do or not at https://carolineclemmons.com

Bear Stalker: Gabriel Hawke Novels Book 10 by Paty Jager

Bear Stalker

Gabriel Hawke Novels Book 10

by Paty Jager

Genre: Police Procedural, Game Warden Mystery Thriller

Greed, misdirection, and murder have Hawke rushing to track his sister in the Montana wilderness before she becomes the next victim. Bear Stalker is book 10 in the highly acclaimed Gabriel Hawke Game Warden mystery series.

Oregon State Trooper Gabriel Hawke’s sister, Marion, is on a corporate retreat in Montana when she becomes a murder suspect. Running for her life from the real killer, she contacts Hawke for help.

Hawke heads to Montana to find his sister and prove she isn’t a murderer. He hasn’t seen Marion in over twenty years but he knows she wouldn’t kill the man she was about to marry.

As they dig into possible embezzlement, two more murders, and find themselves trying to outsmart a wilderness-wise kidnapper, Hawke realizes his sister needs to return home and immerse herself in their heritage. Grief is a journey that must be traveled and knowing her fiancé had wanted Marion to dance again, Hawke believes their culture would help her heal.

Reviews of Bear Stalker by Amazon Reviewers:

I love reading the Hawke series. Hawke is a very caring person though he comes off as a little distant and wary. This however comes from his years on the reservation, in the military, and as a trooper for the state Fish and Wildlife department. Hawke will do what it takes to protect someone who is hurt or innocent even if it means he bends a few rules and keeps things from her boss. The mystery is great. There are plenty of twists, turns, and red herrings to keep you guessing who is behind everything. I recommend this to mystery fans and fans of police procedurals. Also anyone who enjoys reading mysteries with indigenous characters.

The Gabriel Hawke mystery series is very compelling. I loved this latest book in the series!
It combines hunting a murderer, Native American culture, and the importance of family.

The ancient art of tracking is his greatest strength...

And his biggest weakness.

Fish and Wildlife State Trooper Gabriel Hawke is a master tracker. His determination to discover what is at the end of the trail in the wilderness, a paper trail, or a murder investigation helps him uncover the truth. His desire to stay true to his ancestors and Indigenous roots keeps him grounded.

Her (Jager's) writing is well-crafted, gripping, authentic. The story appeals right from the beginning, mainly because of her unique protagonist, Fish & Wildlife State Trooper Gabriel Hawke. Beating In Time: Last Chance Beach Romance by M.J. Schiller #15

Beating In Time: Last Chance Beach Romance #15
by M.J. Schiller

Tagline ~ Music took him away from her. Music brought him back. But are their hearts still beating in time?

Blurb ~

Once upon a time, their hearts beat as one…

Drummer Levi Cannon knows that all the platinum records in the world won’t fill the Remi-sized hole in his heart.

I left Last Chance Beach and Remington Lawson behind when I took my shot at fame and fortune, but I had no idea what I was sacrificing. Now that a fundraiser has brought me home, I want more than anything to win her back. But it’s been eight years. There may be a bridge that connects the island to the mainland, but am I a fool to think that I can build something that will span the chasm of all those years?

Remi Boyd knows that her love for her brother’s best friend has never died.

But what kind of fool would I be to trust him again after he broke my heart? I was a child when he left. Now I’m a woman who’s been a wife and I’m also a mother to the most precious girl in the world. I can’t drag her through some torrid affair, and that is clearly all Levi can offer me.

Music took him away. Music brought him back. But is it too late to recapture what they once had? Or can Last Chance Beach work its magic for them?

Excerpt ~

Levi

A crescendo of noise rose from the dance floor and we looked over. Someone had slid a folding chair over to the blonde and she was up on it, dancing her heart out, facing the other direction. She peeled off the unbuttoned, long-sleeved black blouse she wore over a skimpy black, midriff-baring tank top. The motion of it falling from her shoulders stirred me even more. She swirled it above her head like a lasso before wrapping it around her partner and pulling him into her. She quickly released him and dropped it on the chair then planted her high heel—black, with strings that criss-crossed and wrapped around her leg—on his shoulder with her knee bent, then shoved him away. The crowd had circled around them and was getting into it, whooping and woof-whistling encouragement. The guy grabbed her legs and whirled around with her then loosened his grip so that she slowly slid to the floor.

“Who is that blonde with the body that won’t stop?” I said loudly.

“That’s Remi.”

It felt like the floor had dropped out from under me. “Remi?”

“How many Remis do you know?” Dak answered. “Remi Lawson.”

Wyatt’s little sister. So many emotions hit me at once I froze—like a cat walking across a keyboard, the flurry of input jammed up my brain. The level of shock was threefold. One, to see her in the first place. Two, to see her looking so hot. Three, to see her with a guy’s hands on her.

As he held her by the hips she bent backward with a hand on her head and whipped her hair around twice. Before she rose, she caught my eye and gave me this sexy smile that shot immediately to my gut. She straightened and spun. Though I couldn’t hear her, I could read her lips, and she called out my name, taking a step toward me. Marco yanked her back against him. My gaze zeroed in on his hand, splayed on her pelvis, and, well, I lost it.

I must have gotten rid of my cup, because I didn’t have it when I got to her. I heard her say, “Oh, shit,” but my focus was on Marco. I grabbed her arm and jerked her away from him.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Marco hauled her back in. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he rejoined. “Get your own.”

I snatched her back. “Can’t you see she’s not old enough?”

Without looking at her, his jaw tight, he said, “You’re eighteen, aren’t ya, hon? That’s what you said.”

“Yeah. I’m—”

She’s eighteen?

Marco smirked. “A legal adult.” He tried to make another move for her, but I shifted to block him.

I licked my lips. “There’s more to it than age of consent, you asshole.”

“Like what?”

“Levi. Let me go.” Remi wrenched herself free but the quick motion caused her to stumble and turn her ankle. She fell against some other guy, whose quick reflexes kept her from hitting the ground.

“Have you been drinking?” I spat, concerned at first, then angry. Before she could deny it, I said, “You’ve been drinking.” I turned on Marco. “Did you get her a drink?”

He blinked. “Uhh…”

I got up in his grill, our chests bumping. “You put anything in that drink, Marco?”

“No,” he said a little bit more quickly than I liked. Although a pause would have added even more concern.

I tried to read him, my fists clenching and unclenching. “You sure the hell better not have, or you’re going to be in a world of hurt when I get back.” I latched on to Remi. “Come on.” I started marching with her to the door.

“What are you doing?” she mumbled. She was definitely trashed.

“Taking you home.”

“I remember when you used to be fun,” she said petulantly. She shook me off.

Pissed, I made an attempt to grab her again.

“Nope.” She evaded my hands and tried to rush away from me, but I lunged and latched around her waist. She giggled at first, but started kicking and screaming at about the time we reached the door. “I’m not leaving. You can’t tell me what to do.”

I tightened my grip. Jerking my head at the door, I barked, “Open it.” The couple from earlier scurried out of my way, the guy cracking the door open as he bailed. I was starting to sweat.

Remi stomped her shoe on the ground and flailed. “Stop.”

“You stop,” I countered maturely, finally getting her out the door and closing it behind me.

“Can’t you see I’m not a kid anymore?”

Hell, yeah, I can see that.
