Four and Twenty Blackbirds by M.J. Schiller

Four and Twenty Blackbirds
by M.J. Schiller

Once upon a time, a woman fell in love with a prince…and married his brother.

Book Blurb:

Once upon a time…

A young lady named Izzy was abducted by marauders and forced into slavery. Upon her arrival at the castle, she was taken in by one of the king’s advisors, a wise and kindly man. As time passed, she fell in love with a young man whom she later discovered was the prince.

This prince, Trevarius, as he was not the direct heir to the throne, enjoyed a rather carefree lifestyle. But he found Izzy fascinating and was drawn to her. To his dismay, his brother chose Izzy as his wife to spite Trevarius.

Will Izzy and Trevarius lose their happily-ever-after?

Excerpt:

The birds began to sing. Or rather, shriek. The high-pitched noise was followed by the loud whir of wings as they lifted into the air. Isadore crooked her neck and watched them rise into the sky, obliterating the sun for a second; then, she was forced to shade her eyes from its glare. Subtly, another noise replaced the first, coming from the same direction as the birds had and getting louder and louder with each passing moment.

What is…horses!

A chill washed over her that had nothing to do with the frigid water she was standing in. She had come with a dozen others to wash clothing in this stream. The water wasn’t as deep as their normal creek bed; however, it was closer to home, which is why they had chosen it. Nearby villages had been raided of late, and parents wanted their daughters nearby. She scanned the horizon and saw it. The wisp of smoke that meant others had been to their village.

Her warning burst from her mouth at the same time the mounts erupted from the tree line surrounding the watering hole.

“Riders!”

She moved as quickly as she could in the waist-deep water, releasing the shift she had been washing, letting it slowly drift away as the quiet, idyllic scene of moments before changed into a nightmare. Horses came charging into the water from the banks, and women screamed as they attempted to flee but were caught up in the hands of riders. She searched for her sister, Ysmay, and caught sight of her red dress. A man had his arm around her neck and shoulders as he dragged her from the water, kicking and wailing.

“Nay! Ysmay!” She began to wade in that direction, frustrated by the resistance of the water and the weight of her dress. All she could do was cry out and watch as the man hauled her sister onto his mount and plopped her in front of him. He laughed and pulled on his horse’s reins, twisting its head back to the bank. “Nay. Release her.” Ysmay at fourteen was two years her senior; yet, as she was smaller framed, people often mistook them for twins.

Ysmay turned. Isadore couldn’t hear her but read her lips. “Flee, Izzy!”

Her view of Ysmay was cut off when a soldier and his steed cut between them, a yard away. The man grabbed a younger girl, who couldn’t have been more than ten, and she screamed. With dismay, Izzy realized that it was too late to help Ysmay; on the other hand, maybe she could at least save this one girl. Isadore struggled forward and lunged at the last second to latch onto the girl’s leg before she could be plucked from the stream. Getting her feet under her, Isadore reached further to try to claw the girl from the man’s grasp and almost succeeded. However, she was so focused on prying his fingers from the girl’s arm that she didn’t see the sword in his other hand until it was too late.

She managed to whirl so that the broadside of the sword didn’t connect with her face, still the solid blow to the temple area knocked her several feet. The fury of noise about her was drowned out as she sank under the surface of the water. Everything was muffled, save for the ringing in her ear, although she was unable to determine if that was a sound or simply a sensation. Her head was heavy, and she would have slipped into unconsciousness and drowned had she not, in her flailing, cut her foot on a rock. The sharp pain kept the blackness at bay. She blinked, looking up as a splotch of crimson floated eerily by. Something knocked against her, and she spun to find herself nose to nose with a corpse. Mistress Blackny drifted past, her eyes wide though unseeing, her throat slashed, and a steady stream of blood coloring the water surrounding them. The mistress was her best friend Thea’s grandmother and was more of a grandmother to Isadore than her own. In her horror, Isadore scrambled upright again, breaking the water and sputtering, disconcerted by the return of the noise and action all around her, and the fact that the girl she’d been trying to save, and the rider who had been attempting to steal her, were nowhere in sight. Had she lost her senses after all?

She didn’t have much time to consider it as a new agony assaulted her when her single braid was yanked, dragging her against a boot and stirrup. As the rider bent over his horse, his voice was near, although she couldn’t see him with her head forced down by his grip on her hair. She could, however, see the sword he threatened her with.

“Get on this horse or I’ll run you through.”

The blade was at eye level, giving her an idea. She took a breath and dove underwater. The sudden motion threatened to drag her captor from his saddle; so, like she’d hoped, he reflexively brought his sword hand in to brace himself against the side of the horse. The blade sliced her hair, freeing her and leaving him holding her limp braid.

If she tried to swim away from the ruckus, he would no doubt catch her. Her only choice was to make her way once more into the middle of the fray.

When she surfaced for air, she was in much shallower water and able to move more quickly than before. She heard the man with her braid cursing behind her and striving to rotate his horse.

“Seize her!” he screamed, but everyone else was involved in their own skirmish, and she was able to make it ashore.

Some of the raiders had hung back, out of the water; however, the nearest was several yards at a distance. Hearing the shouts, though, he twisted in his saddle and spotted her. He tugged on the reins and spurred his horse to pursue her. Trying to pull her wet skirts up to free her feet, Isadore ran as fast as she could, knowing he would be on her in seconds, and that all hope would be lost. Still, luck was with her, and the horse slid on the muddy bank giving her precious time to escape.

Looking over her shoulder, she saw her neighbor, Avalon, who had also managed to make it to shore, captured by the man who had been chasing her and another from the group on shore. Izzy’s gaze connected with Avalon’s, and a stab of despair pierced her. She turned and kept running.

Devil's Advocate by M.J. Schiller

Devil's Advocate
by M.J. Schiller

Book Blurb:

The verdict’s in. He’s guilty of falling for the opposing counsel.

Nick Adams doesn’t have time for the existential crisis he’s having.

But when I wind up being charged with contempt of court and discover her at the shelter where I’m serving community service, she brings out a side of me I’ve never seen. Could this be the true Nick?

B.J. McCaffrey doesn’t form attachments with anyone.

And playboy counselor Nick Adams would be the last person on the list if I did. But, then again, this isn’t exactly the Nick Adams that people have made him out to be.

Could he heal his broken heart by discovering that, despite outward appearances, she has one? One thing’s for sure. It’s hell being the DEVIL’S ADVOCATE!

Excerpt:

B.J.

I try to help a guy, and he jumps down my throat. Men were a perpetual disappointment to me. I don’t know why I even let my concern show. It was a weakness, and I prided myself on not having those. Or at least not showing them. I found, as a woman, I had to present a professional façade to be taken seriously. Although, I swear that sometimes inside I still felt like a little grubby-faced girl choking on coal dust.

And of all the people to slip in front of. Nick Adams. As pretentious as he was hot. Was it that physical attraction I felt that made me crack, or the fact that I sensed a little boy in him to match my little girl? I entertained myself briefly with the thought of a young Nick, drowning in his father’s suitcoat. I shook my head as my heels clicked along the crowded corridor of the courthouse.

He’s the enemy.

What a stupid thing to do. Open myself up, leaving me vulnerable to the punch in the gut he gave me.

Fool.

I’d actually felt tears spring to my eyes for a moment. Well, no more. Nick Adams was part of the loathsome Adams, McGuire, and Drew firm my practice was currently trying to take down. He’d get no more sympathy from me.

I looked longingly at my place across from the courthouse, wanting nothing more than to escape into the silky sheets that I had on my bed at the moment. But I dutifully took a left and plodded toward the office. I was nothing if not dutiful. The glare from the gigantic gold letters that obnoxiously announced the presence of my firm, Zonderbond and Associates, burned my corneas. As I entered, the security guard nodded at me, doing a very poor job of acting like he wasn’t checking out my legs. Old pervert.

The unexpectedly short day meant that I could work on some depositions and draft a settlement proposal. Although it was barely one, the office was unusually empty. But it was Friday. That meant something to someone who had a life. My boss, Greg Zonderbond, stuck his head into the hall.

“Hey, B.J., do you have a moment?”

We both knew it didn’t matter to him if I did or not. “Sure.” I checked around. A few people were still in the vicinity. I wasn’t totally alone with him. He gave me the creeps. There’d been one incident when he “accidentally” brushed my chest. And another, when he was drunk at a Christmas party, and he ran his hand up my leg, telling me he had “big plans” for me. Ugh! He’d made me a junior partner to keep me from leaving, but everyone knew who was in charge at the firm, and it certainly wasn’t me.

I purposely left the door open when I entered his office. He leaned casually against his desk.

“Well, come on over here.”

My heart beat erratically, but I tried to make sure it didn’t show on my face. I walked toward him.

“Come on. Have a seat.” He indicated a rolling chair less than a foot from his shin.

I attempted to be subtle as I sat, scooting the chair back as far as could be done naturally.

He shifted so that his legs were close to mine. So close, I could feel the heat emanating from his skin. “We haven’t talked in a while. How are things?”

“Oh, good. Good.” I hated the way my voice shook. “I’ve been billing a lot of hours,” I said more confidently.

“Oh, I’m sure you have,” he said dismissively. “How is the Mahafey case going?”

He wanted to hear about my pro bono case? Strange… I cleared my throat. “The judge dismissed it today without prejudice. I’ll have to file again as soon as possible.”

He frowned. “Why did he dismiss it?”

“Alvis Mahafey was drunk when he returned from lunch break.”

He smiled and lifted his gaze slightly. I twisted in my chair to try to catch what he was peering at. Our receptionist, Michelle, was holding up her nails and admiring them, having painted them on company time. It was common knowledge that the two were sleeping together. Michelle was an absolutely worthless receptionist. I was pretty confident she had some other skills that weren’t readily apparent to anyone other than Greg and any of the men she had bedded in the past.

Greg grasped my chin and rotated it so that I was forced to face him straight on. “Focus, B.J. Focus.” As he said the last, his attention wandered to my cleavage. I sat straighter and leaned away. He tilted his head, staring at me intensely, sending a shiver along my spine. It was that look I’d seen him use while cross-examining witnesses, making them come unraveled. He stood and turned his back to stroll behind his desk.

I began to breathe more freely.

“Nick Adams is representing the husband, isn’t he?” The information he gathered and retained never failed to amaze me. A strip of polished wood, front and center on his desk, read “Knowledge is power.” He could be subtle, but he always got his point across. He reminded me of a giant spider with his legs sticking in a myriad of pies. Not a spider, a centipede.

“Uhh, yes. Nick—”

“I understand that he recently went through a breakup with a woman he’d been seeing for several months. Talk has it he was even seen picking out a diamond ring for her.”

This surprised me. Nick had impressed me as the playboy type who could never be in a serious relationship. “I wouldn’t know anything about that.”

He leaned forward, lacing his fingers on his desk. “Adams, McGuire, and Drew have stolen several clients from us of late.”

From what I’d heard, it was more a case of us being unsuccessful in our attempts to steal their clients. Greg seemed to have an unusual preoccupation with besting Adams, McGuire, and Drew, especially Nick Adams.

“I need for you to do something for me, B.J.”

“Okay,” I responded tentatively.

He picked up a crystal paperweight and spun it in his hand. “Nick Adams is probably vulnerable right now.” He set the paperweight down suddenly and rose, going to the door to close it. I rotated my chair so as not to have my back to him. “I need for you to seduce him.”

Blurb:

Getting involved with each other may require some actual conversation…

Caleb Winthrop was conversation-challenged. Especially when it came to the opposite sex.

I didn’t believe it at first when the guys told me Sophie was checking me out. A beautiful girl like her interested in the Mohawk-wearing lead guitarist for a rock band? It seemed far-fetched. But my band members kept pushing me toward her, so I gave in and made an attempt at talking to her, if only to shut them up.

Sophie Lockhart has had her heart broken before.

That’s why my attraction to Caleb was so insane. When one thought about honesty and faithfulness, Caleb Winthrop’s name is not what came to mind. Now, if the word was sexy or unbelievably hot, he would definitely be at the top of that list. But he was the ultimate bad boy…or at least he seemed to be. And that was not the type of guy I could trust with my heart. Even if it was, I’d never be able to work up the nerve to talk to him.

Can these two introverts find their way to each other? Or will each crawl back into the comfort of their protective shell?

Excerpt:

Caleb People had certain expectations of a guy with a Mohawk. Mohawk Guy was crazy and unpredictable. Outgoing. He was dirt-poor and had been raised on the streets. He was a heavy drinker and into drugs. He was scary. One shouldn’t hang around Mohawk Guy or they might end up in prison. This last one made me laugh. Yeah, I’d been in prison, all right. But it was for a crime I didn’t commit, in order to protect someone who, I discovered later, was not deserving of my protection. Yes, I had a Mohawk, and I fit none of these descriptions. I mean, it wasn’t like I hadn’t drank or gotten high, but it certainly wasn’t my thing. But it was okay. I was good with people pegging me as that guy, because then they left me alone. I had a reputation I didn’t deserve, and I couldn’t have been happier about it. It meant I didn’t have to talk to people much. And talking to people was work for me. I don’t know what it was; I simply wasn’t born with that whole forming a coherent sentence thing. It doesn’t mean I’m not smart. I wasn’t top of my class or anything, but that was part of the smoke screen. Top of the class meant awards and recognition and, like, talking to people. So, even though I could have aced every single one of those stupid tests my high school teachers handed out, I made sure I didn’t. People think it’s hard for a guy with a Mohawk to go unnoticed. The opposite is true. It meant I could fade into the background. They already knew who I was. Or they thought they did. “We’re going to take a quick break here, folks. So refresh your drinks and get ready for set number two, because we’ll be rockin’ it in just a few minutes.” Phoenix—who played rhythm guitar for our band, Insatiable Fire, and was our lead vocalist and the face of the band—stashed his guitar in its stand and came to me. “Man. You’ve got a live one tonight,” he said in a low voice, his grin making the spotlights seem dim. I stared at him, trying to make sense of his words. “What do you mean?” Dakota, Phoenix’s brother and our bassist, joined us, and Levi, our drummer, disappeared somewhere with Remi Boyd. We were on Last Chance Beach—the home of all the band members, except for me—participating in a fundraiser carrying the name of Remi’s late husband. I’d never met the man, but by all accounts, he was a great guy, and now that I’d met Remi, I understood why my crew wanted to help her. It was a shame she was already claimed. Not that Levi had said it verbally, but it didn’t take an M.I.T. grad to see he had the hots for her. Not that I needed a girl. It had been my experience that girls meant trouble and heartbreak, and I wasn’t down for that. “Oh, come on,” Phoenix continued. “Like you didn’t notice her…” he gestured over his shoulder, “eyeing you.” I scanned the audience, noting nothing remarkable. “What are you talking about?” “The brunette?” Dakota put in, using the same quiet but suggestive tone. “Ooh, la, la!” “I know, right?” Phoenix returned. “He’s so not worthy of her.” I was becoming annoyed. “What are you freaking talking about? No one is eyeing me.” The heat suddenly making me squirm was not from the lights or the exertion of playing lead guitar. “Dude?” Dak balked. “I know you’re oblivious half the time, but you’re not that oblivious.” My gaze raked the room, trying to locate the girl in question so I could dispel them of this asinine idea that someone was into me. “Who? I’m telling you, no one’s staring at me.” Dak opened his stance a little bit. “The three girls who have been dancing in front of you all night.” Sure, I’d noticed the trio of hotties. They were hard to miss. Phoenix took a quick peek. “Isn’t that…?” “It sure is,” Dakota answered, suddenly serious. It piqued my curiosity, but not enough for me to want to continue this uncomfortable conversation. I busied myself with putting my guitar away. “You guys are crazy. If there are any girls checking someone out on stage it’s because they have a thing for musicians, that’s all.” “Huh. How come she’s looking at you in particular, then?” Me? The Blackstone brothers, Phoenix and Dakota, the guys currently torturing me, were the ones all the girls were after. Sure, I’d ended up with a girl or two. But only after they’d been rejected by the brothers and Levi. I was a last resort. Don’t listen to them. They’re full of shit. But I couldn’t seem to help myself. My eyes slid in the direction of the three girls, who did appear to be watching us. “Which one?” I mumbled, not able to keep the question in.

Devil's in the Details by M.J. Schiller

Devil's in the Details
by M.J. Schiller

Blurb:

Callahan Murphey isn’t as good with women as his father is.

He has the gift of gab. I have the gift of calculus, and there’s only so far that’ll get you with women. And when Shona’s around? I become a complete blathering idiot. I’m hopeless.

Shona McDermott has gotten herself into a bit of trouble.

The kind of trouble that has me swearing off men. No matter how badly I want to break that rule for Cal.

But when Shona gets into hot water, only someone who is a devil for details will be able to get her out.

When love makes them both fools, is there any way for them to redeem themselves?

Excerpt:

It was Shona McDermott, of all people. We grew up together in Old Head. I’d always had a crush on her. The tears in her eyes spoke to her fury and frustration over the situation. “What are you doing here?” Simultaneously she asked, “What the hell are you doing here?” I pushed to my feet, brushing leaves and debris from my trousers. “I’m going to school.” She still lay on the ground, on her elbows, gawking at me. I offered my hand to help her to her feet, making sure my heels were dug in, so we didn’t take another tumble. Once standing, she began swiping at her clothes. “I take it you are, too.” I spotted something and scooped a binder out of the ivy and gave it to her. She took it from me. “Yeah. Yes. I am.” She clutched her belongings to her chest and avoided eye contact. The fact that she’d answered my question three times wasn’t lost on me. “Well, that’s deadly. It’s wonderful to see you.” It did my heart good. She lifted her gaze and gave me her first genuine smile. “Good to see you, too, Cal.” I wanted to prolong our interaction. I glanced up the hill, licking my lips. “Well, as you’re late for class anyway, why don’t you let me take you to lunch?” Noticing a pen near our feet, I bent to retrieve it. She scoffed, stooping to get a book to her left. “A bar maid and Patrick Byrne’s heir? That could be scandalous.” I grinned. “Is that a turn-off?” She exhaled. “On the contrary. That’s a plus.” Her focus danced over me, and I became warm despite the chilly weather. “No, wait.” She dropped her head. “I’m not doing this.” She almost seemed to be talking to herself. “I’m not doing this anymore. This isn’t who I am.” She cleared her throat. “I don’t know you. You could be a drug dealer for all I know.” I plucked another notebook from the muck. “A drug dealer? ’Ave you lost your mind? You know me. You know my family. You can trust me.” “I can’t be certain. It’s been nearly five years. Things can change in five years. Besides, you’re far too good-looking to be trusted.” “Well, thank you…I think…but aren’t you kind of throwin’ me in the stocks without so much as askin’ for evidence?” “Do you have evidence that you’re trustworthy?” “What? Well, no, but—” “I didn’t think so.” She snatched the spiral from me and scanned the ground. “Thank you for your help, but I have to go. I’m late for work.” And just like that, she marched downhill and made a beeline for the stairs. I stood, staring after her. The gal must be off her nut. There was a story there, to be sure. I shook my head, tromping back in the direction I’d come from, wiping at the dirt on my sleeve. I twisted to watch her disappear onto the road above.

Beating In Time: Last Chance Beach Romance by M.J. Schiller #15

Beating In Time: Last Chance Beach Romance #15
by M.J. Schiller

Tagline ~ Music took him away from her. Music brought him back. But are their hearts still beating in time?

Blurb ~

Once upon a time, their hearts beat as one…

Drummer Levi Cannon knows that all the platinum records in the world won’t fill the Remi-sized hole in his heart.

I left Last Chance Beach and Remington Lawson behind when I took my shot at fame and fortune, but I had no idea what I was sacrificing. Now that a fundraiser has brought me home, I want more than anything to win her back. But it’s been eight years. There may be a bridge that connects the island to the mainland, but am I a fool to think that I can build something that will span the chasm of all those years?

Remi Boyd knows that her love for her brother’s best friend has never died.

But what kind of fool would I be to trust him again after he broke my heart? I was a child when he left. Now I’m a woman who’s been a wife and I’m also a mother to the most precious girl in the world. I can’t drag her through some torrid affair, and that is clearly all Levi can offer me.

Music took him away. Music brought him back. But is it too late to recapture what they once had? Or can Last Chance Beach work its magic for them?

Excerpt ~

Levi

A crescendo of noise rose from the dance floor and we looked over. Someone had slid a folding chair over to the blonde and she was up on it, dancing her heart out, facing the other direction. She peeled off the unbuttoned, long-sleeved black blouse she wore over a skimpy black, midriff-baring tank top. The motion of it falling from her shoulders stirred me even more. She swirled it above her head like a lasso before wrapping it around her partner and pulling him into her. She quickly released him and dropped it on the chair then planted her high heel—black, with strings that criss-crossed and wrapped around her leg—on his shoulder with her knee bent, then shoved him away. The crowd had circled around them and was getting into it, whooping and woof-whistling encouragement. The guy grabbed her legs and whirled around with her then loosened his grip so that she slowly slid to the floor.

“Who is that blonde with the body that won’t stop?” I said loudly.

“That’s Remi.”

It felt like the floor had dropped out from under me. “Remi?”

“How many Remis do you know?” Dak answered. “Remi Lawson.”

Wyatt’s little sister. So many emotions hit me at once I froze—like a cat walking across a keyboard, the flurry of input jammed up my brain. The level of shock was threefold. One, to see her in the first place. Two, to see her looking so hot. Three, to see her with a guy’s hands on her.

As he held her by the hips she bent backward with a hand on her head and whipped her hair around twice. Before she rose, she caught my eye and gave me this sexy smile that shot immediately to my gut. She straightened and spun. Though I couldn’t hear her, I could read her lips, and she called out my name, taking a step toward me. Marco yanked her back against him. My gaze zeroed in on his hand, splayed on her pelvis, and, well, I lost it.

I must have gotten rid of my cup, because I didn’t have it when I got to her. I heard her say, “Oh, shit,” but my focus was on Marco. I grabbed her arm and jerked her away from him.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Marco hauled her back in. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he rejoined. “Get your own.”

I snatched her back. “Can’t you see she’s not old enough?”

Without looking at her, his jaw tight, he said, “You’re eighteen, aren’t ya, hon? That’s what you said.”

“Yeah. I’m—”

She’s eighteen?

Marco smirked. “A legal adult.” He tried to make another move for her, but I shifted to block him.

I licked my lips. “There’s more to it than age of consent, you asshole.”

“Like what?”

“Levi. Let me go.” Remi wrenched herself free but the quick motion caused her to stumble and turn her ankle. She fell against some other guy, whose quick reflexes kept her from hitting the ground.

“Have you been drinking?” I spat, concerned at first, then angry. Before she could deny it, I said, “You’ve been drinking.” I turned on Marco. “Did you get her a drink?”

He blinked. “Uhh…”

I got up in his grill, our chests bumping. “You put anything in that drink, Marco?”

“No,” he said a little bit more quickly than I liked. Although a pause would have added even more concern.

I tried to read him, my fists clenching and unclenching. “You sure the hell better not have, or you’re going to be in a world of hurt when I get back.” I latched on to Remi. “Come on.” I started marching with her to the door.

“What are you doing?” she mumbled. She was definitely trashed.

“Taking you home.”

“I remember when you used to be fun,” she said petulantly. She shook me off.

Pissed, I made an attempt to grab her again.

“Nope.” She evaded my hands and tried to rush away from me, but I lunged and latched around her waist. She giggled at first, but started kicking and screaming at about the time we reached the door. “I’m not leaving. You can’t tell me what to do.”

I tightened my grip. Jerking my head at the door, I barked, “Open it.” The couple from earlier scurried out of my way, the guy cracking the door open as he bailed. I was starting to sweat.

Remi stomped her shoe on the ground and flailed. “Stop.”

“You stop,” I countered maturely, finally getting her out the door and closing it behind me.

“Can’t you see I’m not a kid anymore?”

Hell, yeah, I can see that.
