Excerpt

Prologue

Slade

BODIES WEREN’T foreign to me, but they weren’t commonplace either.

Trying to keep my feet out of the water, I stooped over, not too much, to study the corpse floating face down about three feet away. The ears were chewed on by some kind of creature. A denim shirt clung to a pudgy back, and the torso gently rocked though no boat stirred the South Edisto River.

The last body I’d discovered in Newberry, my most recent major case, made me vomit my breakfast burrito, and if I hadn’t skipped lunch today, I’d have upchucked here, too.

We were supposed to be on vacation. Or rather, I’d been ordered by my boss to take a vacation.

“Go take basket weaving or something,” he’d said, his way of telling me to get out of his hair for a while and quit finding investigations where there were none. Sorry, but when I thought there was a case, there usually was a case. My record proved it. He sort of pissed me off.

So I’d Googled basket weaving and South Carolina Lowcountry, and made reservations for a week at Indigo Plantation. I was from this piece of the state, and revisiting would be nice. Plus, I planned to make the biggest, gaudiest basket in the world, and set the damn thing on his desk when I returned.

Patiently, Wayne had stood guard on dry land, while I searched for the right grass for a basket, along the edge of the river. But as I waded calf deep in the water, a heavy something bumped me from behind.
Imagining a gator, I screamed, teetered, and fell, making the lawman come running.

Wayne saw the body before I did. “Don’t touch it, Slade!” he’d yelled.

From sitting waist deep in brackish water, slick mud under my butt, I scrambled like a crab at surf’s edge, putting distance between me and the dead man. “It touched me first,” I yelled back.

Gently but quickly, he rolled the man over and checked for a pulse.

I’m sure my eyes rolled. Skin color and missing eyelids told us what we needed. I couldn’t stop staring though I was sure I’d regret it in my dreams.

“Stay here and guard the scene,” Wayne said, in his federal agent voice, the boyfriend in him gone.

“Don’t disturb anything. And don’t let anyone else disturb anything.”

Then off he waded to shore and left me. Just like that. Before I could ask what to do if the body tried to float off.

Author Interview

How did you come up with the name of this book?

Dying on Edisto fits a pattern we established with the series from the outset. The odd-numbered books are Something on/of Edisto. Three words. The even-numbered books are Edisto Something, two words.

Murder on Edisto
Edisto Jinx
Echoes of Edisto
Edisto Stranger
Dying on Edisto

This being book five, it was time for the first pattern. Sometimes I think it’s more for our purposes than the reader’s.

But one might ask why is Edisto in every title. These stories are steeped and rich in setting. The real Edisto Island is a jungle-like environment in the South Carolina coastal Lowcountry. Setting owns you down there. Salt air, bugs, and all the wildlife that comes with the ocean and marsh. Sunrises, sunsets. Sounds of the ocean as well as the birds. . . the raccoons at night. Add that to the fact that Edisto Beach is a vacation destination, gave us strong reasoning to insert the name Edisto in each book title.

A huge number of book sales takes place through the Edisto Bookstore on Edisto Island. Tourists arrive each and every weekend, stereotypically seeking a good beach read. They gravitate toward the island’s name, often purchasing the entire series with a desire to entrench themselves into this paradise as deeply as they can. And I credit my publisher for that decision.

The Dying part of Dying on Edisto has its own origin, though. Indigo Plantation is the new bed and breakfast in this story. The owners are trying to rejuvenate the indigo plant, feeding the trend toward more natural living through natural dyes, as well as educate visitors on the pre-Civil War history of the island. So in a slight tongue-in-cheek manner, we gave a nod to the word Dyeing while likewise recognizing the murder mystery.

What’s something interesting that happened to you?

I own this question. Years back, I was still working the day job with the US Department of Agriculture. Yes….my degree is in agriculture, totally non-author-like. From Clemson University, no less. (Can we say National Championship? Go Tigers!) My family is about all things orange, but I digress.

I used to help with financial assistance for farmers. In comes a client who pulled me aside and whispered in my ear, “There’s ten thousand dollars in it for you if you get me that track of land near me.”

I jerked up. “Say what?” This farmer had been my client for five years. He was a bit squirelly, but still, he was a client. And he’d just offered me a bribe. I didn’t believe him, so he repeated it. He had a reputation of dealing drugs, so the offer bothered me. He just might mean it!

So like a good federal employee, I called in the Inspector General. You see, you can’t call your boss, or tell your coworkers, or even call the cops. You have to call what’s in essence the FBI of your agency. After a phone interview, then an agent visiting my home to interrogate me, we spent two weeks setting up a sting operation in my office. . . pretending the two men were auditors from Atlanta just looking over files.

After nerve-wracking days of rehearsing scripts, recording conversations and filming meets, the guy never came across with the money, and the US Attorney chose not to prosecute. But 18 months later, I married the federal agent. (Smile)

We are still married to this day, and he’s the best technical advisor a mystery author could ever have. When it comes time to edit my books, we sit on the back porch, overlooking the lake, and over two bourbons, I read to him. While I catch grammar mistakes, he tells me which gun, how to sneak up on someone, and how far a bullet would knock someone back before they went down.

A match made in heaven.

Excerpt: MY TRUTH, MY TURN
1
Sometimes you just want to slap people. Then you remember Karma hits twice as hard.” Unknown

Fancy scrolled through her phone and stopped when she saw the BREAKING NEWS headlines.

FORMER SENIOR PASTOR OF HOLY ROCK MINISTRIES
ARRESTED ON FELONY EMBEZZLEMENT….

She read the article over and over, not believing Hezekiah had been carted off to jail. Yes, she and her sons had discussed this. Part of her knew this day was forthcoming, but to actually read it, see it in black and white, made her feel some type of way. She got ready to call Khalil but stopped abruptly when she heard Winston coming out of the bathroom.

Walking over to her with a white towel covering his intimate parts, his body glistened from having been underneath the streaming jets of water.

Dang, this man is sexy. Full lips, strong chin, cheek muscles that stood out when he clenched his jaw. Fancy eyed him with desire in her eyes as he approached her and stood in front of her.

He came close, looking down at her intensely, before leaning down, and kissing her as she sat on the edge of the firm bed. “I wish I could have persuaded you to join me. I would have made it worth your while,” he teased as he planted delicate kisses along her face, neck, and earlobes.

For a minute, Fancy forgot all about Hezekiah and his woes and allowed her mind and body to react to Winston’s touch.

Your son is calling. The special ringtone pulled her back to reality before she could respond to Winston. Gently, she eased Winston back and answered it.

“Ma, did you hear? They got the dirty dog,” Khalil said without saying hello. She could hear the satisfaction filtering through his voice.

“I know; I just saw it on my phone. I…I don’t know what to say.”

Winston looked down at her and listened, trying to decipher as much as he could about what Khalil could be saying. George had already contacted him and told him what had happened so he wasn’t surprised if that was what Khalil was calling his mother about.

“What do you mean you don’t know what to say? The man has gone down and it’s not over. It’s just beginning. Payback is a mutha, Ma. It’s time he pays the piper. Know what I mean?”

“Yes, I hear you but it’s still your father and my husband.”

“Hold up, he is not your husband. You are divorced, Ma. And last I heard and saw for myself, you already got somebody to take his place. As for him being my father, yeah, he’s my father by blood, but what’s blood got to do with it? Apparently nothing, ‘cause look at the way he’s dissed me and Xavier. The man is ruthless, so don’t go soft on me now, Ma.”

“Yes, I hear ya, son. Anyway, I just need a minute. I’ll call you back later. Okay?”

“Uh, okay, but you gonna be all right? I wasn’t expecting you to sound like you just buried the guy or something. Everything'll be a’ite. You hear me?”

“Yes, sweetheart, I hear you. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Okay, bye, Ma.” The call ended and with tears in her eyes, Fancy looked up at Winston.

“What is it, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“It’s Hezekiah.”

“Is he all right? Did something happen? Another stroke?”

Fancy shook her head. “No, he’s been arrested. It’s been in the making for some time, but now that it’s actually happened I…I don’t know how I’m feeling,” she admitted, wringing her hands and bowing her head.

Winston reached down, gathered her by her forearms, pulled her up against his taut body, and held her tightly as she rested her head against his chest. “The man was your husband until a few weeks ago. You have history together, children together. It’s normal to have mixed emotions about his arrest.”

Fancy looked up at Winston. “Thank you, Winston.”

“I’m here for you. In any way I can. I hope you know that.”

Fancy nodded her approval and laid her head back against his chest as he tightened his arms around her. She needed to feel safe, protected, and secure. Winston made her feel all of the above.

Winston’s mind was a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts. He had not admitted to himself until now his growing feelings for Fancy McCoy. She reminded him of his ex, Josselyn. He and Josselyn had been engaged for less than six months when she, out of the blue, called off the engagement, saying she wasn’t ready to get married after all. Winston was heartbroken. When she accepted his proposal of marriage it was like a dream had become a reality. It was heartbreaking for him to see her weeks later with another man when they were supposed to spend their lives together, but life had offered a cruel blow.

The caveat in the whole break up was when Winston received a promotion on his job that would require him to relocate to Memphis. After ending things the way she did, Winston couldn’t wait to leave town and start anew.

His mind was not on meeting anyone else. Instead, his intentions were to make a mark in his new position in Memphis and continue to move up the corporate ladder. But his chance encounter with Fancy revealed just how small of a world it is.

Not exactly a guy with a stellar reputation behind closed doors, it didn’t take much prodding from his longtime friend, George Reeves, when Winston told him about the hot woman he’d met at Brother Juniper’s restaurant. George asked Winston to tell him more about the woman who seemed to have temporarily gotten his mind off Josselyn.

George broke out into raucous laughter when Winston told him the woman’s name was Fancy McCoy. How much better could things get?

George gave Winston some background on Fancy McCoy and her husband, Hezekiah. He didn’t want his friend getting sucked in by the likes of any one with the last name ‘McCoy’, but it could possibly work for George the more he thought about it.

Listening to George run down a quick history about the McCoy’s and Holy Rock made Winston that more enthralled and eager to get to know more about this striking mystery woman he’d met.

As for George, the more he gave thought to Winston’s encounter with Fancy, the more he convinced himself this was divine intervention. Why else, of all the women he could have met, Winston met Fancy McCoy? From there, a plan began to circulate in his mind. If he could convince Winston to woo Fancy McCoy, and if she liked Winston, then Winston could keep his eyes and ears open for any shenanigans she and her crooked sons might have up their sleeves toward Hezekiah, and possibly toward George too. In return for his spying, George would only need to convince Winston he could enjoy the pleasure of having a knock off like Fancy to mess with since he’d made the move to Memphis and didn’t know a lot of people.

If George was able to get the inside scoop on Fancy’s plans, the less he would have to worry about his money train being cut off by Hezekiah. George figured it would be a win-win for both him and Winston. Of course, he’d break off a little money to Winston from time to time, not that Winston needed it. The man enjoyed a lucrative career and money was the least of his worries.

After some prodding, with a bit of reluctance mixed with curiosity, Winston agreed to get to know Fancy better. Anything Winston heard or saw that he believed might be helpful in their pursuit of the money George told Winston Hezekiah’s son had stolen from his dad, Winston was supposed to let George know.

What took Winston by surprise was his feelings. He didn’t expect to develop the strong attraction he had toward Fancy, but he did. She was easy to like, made him laugh, and definitely made him forget about Josselyn breaking his heart. But was it enough to make him back off doing what he had agreed? He tried not to think about that but every time he thought about telling George he wasn’t on board with the plan anymore he remembered how he had been walked over by Josselyn, and he knew he could not fully trust Fancy. Thus, his loyalty remained with George.

“Look, everything will be fine. You’re going to be fine,” Winston assured Fancy. To see how much she was affected by Hezekiah’s arrest told Winston a lot. Fancy still loved her husband. What a fool this Hezekiah guy is. It also told him something else—to keep his heart in check because her feelings certainly didn’t lie with him.

Excerpt

Once again, his gaze ensnares me. I cannot look away, his eyes wolf-like with intensity. The green depths convey lust, determination, but also a hidden sorrow. My heart clenches. I want to touch his face, comfort him, understand his grief. And yet I do not move, can barely draw breath. I am captured heart, mind, and soul.

“This is boring. Shall we dance?” Margit offers her arm.

Dracula is slow to loop Margit’s arm through his. But perhaps his seeming reluctance is my own wishful thinking.

As they stroll toward the dance floor, I stand rooted to the ground, controlled breaths doing little to cool my heated annoyance at Margit. Never before have I felt a connection to a man. Never before did a man look at me with such desire. Never before have Margit and I been competitors. It is a rivalry I have no practice at.

With Margit clutching his arm, Prince Vlad stops and makes a slow pivot. “Lady Ilona, will you join us?”

“Happily.”

Though he waits in the shadows beyond the fire basket’s radiance, I feel our connection, like a quivering string or a taut ribbon. I move forward, reeled in by a man with a dark past.

After dancing with Margit, Prince Vlad asks me to take a turn about the floor. We clap in sync with the other dancers and I circle around him, our eyes locked on one another. He makes me feel like I am the only one in the room. I blush and grin, my cheeks fevered under his gaze. Though I know every step of this dance I am unprepared for what happens next.

Prince Vlad takes my hand, his strong warm fingers enclosing mine. The jolt races up my arm and bursts like a dam through my body. My skin is washed with a sparkling sensation, skin and limbs stirred with the thrill of his touch. The next step brings us too close—kissing close—and I smell his scent. Rosemary, leather, forest, and man. Surely, he hears my heart knocking against my bodice. Prince Vlad inhales deeply and bends his head into my neck. I gasp with desire, want to feel the graze of his cheek or tickle of his moustache against my skin.

Instead he shifts about, his brazen move but a momentary disruption in the dance steps.

“Is that how they dance in Wallachia?” I ask when we next clasp hands.

“That is how I dance with a beautiful woman.” His fingers warm around mine.

THE DONET TRILOGY

To Tame the Wind
The Donet Trilogy Book 1
by
Regan Walker

Genre: Historical Romance

A sea adventure like no other, a riveting romance!” – SHIRLEE
BUSBEE, NY Times Bestselling author

Paris 1782…AN INNOCENT IS TAKEN

All Claire Donet knew was the world inside the convent walls in
Saint-Denis. She had no idea her beloved papa was a pirate. But when
he seized Simon Powell's schooner, the English privateer decided to
take the thing his enemy held most dear...her.

A BATTLE IS JOINED

The waters between France and England roil with the clashes of Claire's father and her captor as the last year of the American Revolution rages on the sea, spies lurk in Paris and Claire’s passion for the
English captain rises.

Excerpt for To Tame the Wind by Regan Walker

The door of the carriage swung open, a gown was tossed into her lap and a broad shouldered man filled the opening.

Claire’s jaw went slack while her heart kicked into a gallop as if responding of its own accord to the first man to stir it from slumber.

“Bonjour, Mademoiselle Donet,” he said in French. “Captain Simon Powell.” He bowed in grand gesture. “Your humble servant with something for you to wear.”

The golden one. It had been nearly two years since she had seen him, but she had never forgotten the night of the masquerade. She had never forgotten him. Though the linen shirt stretched tight across his broad chest and the leather breeches and boots he wore now were a far cry from the shimmering costume he’d worn then, his amber eyes were the same. Impossibly, he was even more handsome that in her faded memory. In the last two years, he had never been far from her thoughts, for the night she’d first seen him—and imagined a man’s pleasure—was the night Claire’s girlish dreams had ended forever.

And now he’d returned to France and abducted her.

He leaned into the carriage and untied her feet, then her wrists. The touch of his rough man’s hands on her skin sent odd chills rippling through her. She bit her lip, shamed by her body’s reaction to this stranger. Her living temptation turned away for a moment, then faced her, a cup in his outstretched hand. “’Tis only water,” he said when she was reluctant to take it.

Too grateful to complain, she hastily brought the fresh water to her dry lips and drank her fill.

“I’ll give you some time to dress,” he said not unkindly. His eyes shifted to her blanket-covered nightclothes. “I wouldn’t want my men to see you as you are.”

Claire felt her cheeks burn at the thought.

“The gown is modest enough to please even your nuns,” he said. “Call me if you need… ah, assistance. I will be just outside.”

She fumed at his insolence, at his actions that had placed her at his mercy. Though she knew he was English and a privateer, she had no idea why he had taken her, and she would wait no longer to learn the truth of it. “Why did you bring me here? Why did you take me from the convent?”

Leaning one arm against the frame of the carriage, he regarded her intently, his eyes like chips of amber.

“You have your father to thank for that, mademoiselle. As soon as he returns what is mine you will have your freedom.”

Claire blinked. “My father?” Her voice sounded to her like the pleading of a feeble schoolgirl. She would not be cowed! She lifted her chin, confident in his error. “What has he to do with this… this perfidy? Papa is a man of business and letters, a man of some wealth. He has no need to steal!”

His mouth twitched up in a grin, drawing Claire’s gaze to his sensual lips, reminding her of a night when she had seen him use those lips to good effect. She scowled, angry with the rogue and with herself for finding him so attractive.

He shut the door of the carriage and peered in through the open window. “Your father, mademoiselle, is a pirate.”

"Regan Walker sweeps you away to a time and place you'll NEVER want to leave!" ~ Danelle Harmon, NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author

England and France 1784

Cast out by his noble father for marrying the woman he loved, Jean Donet took to the sea, becoming a smuggler, delivering French brandy andtea to the south coast of England. When his young wife died, he nearly lost his sanity. In time, he became a pirate and then a privateer, vowing to never again risk his heart.

As Donet’s wealth grew, so grew his fame as a daring ship’s captain, the terror of the English Channel in the American War. When his father and older brother die in a carriage accident in France, Jean
becomes the comte de Saintonge, a title he never wanted.

Lady Joanna West cares little for London Society, which considers her its darling. Marriage in the ton is either dull or disastrous. She wants no part of it. To help the poor in Sussex, she joins in their
smuggling. Now she is the master of the beach, risking her reputation and her life. One night off the coast of Bognor, Joanna encounters the menacing captain of a smuggling ship, never realizing he is the mysterious comte de Saintonge.

Can Donet resist the English vixen who entices him as no other woman?
Will Lady Joanna risk all for an uncertain chance at love in the arms of the dashing Jean Donet?
