Blub of INTO THE DARKNESS:

I’d always been different. I saw objects in the night where others saw emptiness. Large, human shaped shadows, fierce yet beautiful, melting into the darkness. I collected secrets like other women collected bells; afraid to fully trust lest my oddities be exposed.

Until I saw him. He’d been gliding down the street, unshakable confidence in every step. It wasn’t just that he was breathtakingly handsome with perfect features. Something about him drew me. Sucked my focus to him and then tugged at my body. As his eyes met mine, I was entrapped.

No one had noticed him. He’d been right there, just beyond the light, but only I had perceived.

I had to know if he was real. Or maybe I really was crazy. And even when my secret box was blasted wide open, dangers hurled at me like throwing knives, I couldn’t stop until I unraveled his true identity.

I just had to know.

“She was fated to live.”
“Then why must you save her?”
“Often Fate is struck down by dumb luck.”

Excerpt:

I huddled on my bed later that night with my knees pulled up to my chest. Thinking. Focusing on what it was I couldn’t remember. It was there, hovering around my conscious mind. Nudging me. Waiting for me to pay attention. To remember. It was the key to that insane situation in the park.

I flung my wet hair out of my face, pulled the sleeves of my pajamas over my hands, and glanced out  the window.

The stranger waited. Outside, he watched, staring up at my shaded windows, just wanting me to know he was there. He was waiting for me to come down to him. He had the same questions I did—I was certain he felt the same things.

How did I know this? I just did. And that scared the holy crap outta me!

ABOUT K. F. BREENE

A wine country native, K.F. Breene moved to San Francisco for college just shy of a decade ago to pursue a lifelong interest in film. As she settled into the vibrant city, it quickly became apparent that, while she thought making and editing films was great fun, she lacked cinematic genius. For that reason, her career path quickly changed direction. Her next goal was a strange childhood interest, conjured at the dining room table while filling out a form. For some reason, her young self wanted to be an accountant. Thinking on it now, she often wonders how she had any friends. Regardless, it was the direction she finally took.

While she could wrangle numbers with the best of 'em, and even though she wore the crown as the most outspoken, belligerent accountant in the world, her mind got as stuffy as her daily routine. It was here that she dusted off her creative hat and began writing. Now she makes movies in her head, not worried about lighting, shutter speed or editing equipment. Turns out, a computer is much easier to manage than a crowd of actors. She should know, she was an actor at one time.

INTERVIEW WITH CATHERINE CASTLE, AUTHOR OF THE NUN AND THE NARC

Welcome Catherine Castle and her award winning novel THE NUN AND THE NARC.

Caroline: Where did you grow up? Siblings? Locale? Were you considered a “bookworm” or a jock?  Married, single? Children?

Catherine: I grew up in southern Ohio. Dad had what I called gypsy feet and we’d move every few years or so. It prepared me for married life because we had a lot of different addresses, too.
I was definitely a bookworm and not a jock. I was constantly falling UP the staircase at school. For me, there was no such thing as taking out a single book from the library. I’d walk home loaded down with so many books I’d have welts on my arms from the weight. I got lost in the pages, too, and wouldn’t hear anything going on around me. The house could have burnt down around my ears and I would have sat there oblivious to anything but the world between the pages. When the family would do to visit people the first thing I’d look for was a bookcase. If there were books, I’d ask if I could read one and I’d be set for the entire visit.

Caroline: Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

Catherine: Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tolkein, Heinlein. I don’t have a favorite contemporary author. I pick up what I think I’ll like. I love romance, and fantasy, historicals, science fiction, suspense, paranormal. I even read non-fiction.               The one genre I don’t like is horror. Rosemary’s Baby caused me to stop reading horror as a teenager.

Caroline: What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge? Hobbies?

Catherine: My garden is my major recharger. I like working in it, sitting on the deck and listening to the bumblebees in the blooms. I also quilt, knit, and crochet in spurts and have lots of UFOs (unfinished objects) in all of those crafts. Movies are good, too, although when we go hubby and I tend to dissect them. It’s a writer’s curse, we’ve decided.

Caroline: Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?

Catherine: Use what talents you have; the woods would have little music if no birds sang their song except those who sang best. - Reverend Oliver G. Wilson

Caroline: How long have you been writing?

Catherine: I’ve been writing professionally since 1990. I was a freelance writer for 10 years and have over 600 articles to my credit. I’ve written nonfiction in the secular market and the Christian market, for adults and for children. The Nun and the Narc is my debut novel.

On a more personal level, I’ve been writing since I was a teenager. I have written over 200 poems (at last count) and created three, currently unpublished, chapbooks, a couple of short stories (most which have disappeared in one move or another), and a teenage angst-filled romance written in longhand (which I still possess). I’ve completed five fiction works and I have several more in various stages of completion. I’ve also coauthored several plays with my husband. Oh, and music lyrics and music compositions.

Caroline: Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?

Catherine: I have a cluttered office that I work in, which I periodically have a frenzied cleaning spell over. I would love to have one of those clean, decorated-to-the-teeth offices that you see in the magazines, but since I have an organized, piled, filing system, in addition to my file cabinets, the room probably wouldn’t look like that for long.

As for what I need to write—quiet and a laptop that has the keys spaced just so. I’m obsessive about the keyboard spacing and have rejected many a keyboard because the keys were too far apart. I have small hands.

Caroline: Are you a plotter or a panzer?

Catherine:  A bit of both. I need to know where the story is going so I don’t waste time when I sit down to write. At the same time, I leave enough flexibility for the characters and story to morph.

Caroline: Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?

Catherine: None of my characters are real persons, at least not yet, unless you count the Biblical characters in one of my unpublished books.  I think using events or persons as jumping off point and creating something completely new is easier to do and possibly safer, from a litigation standpoint.

Caroline: Do you set daily writing goals? Word count? Number of chapters? Do you get a chance to write every day?

Catherine: I could write every day, but I don’t. Most of the time I write on a need basis; if I’m on a deadline, editorial or self-imposed; if the characters won’t shut up; if a story, or poem, or blog idea is clamoring to get out. When I do sit down to write I usually write anywhere from 5 – 10 pages in a session.

Caroline: What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

Catherine: I read for entertainment and I want to bring that to my readers. I want them to get lost in the book like I used to as a child. I want it to be a can’t-put-it-down experience. If they are reading one of my inspirational romances, I want the faith element to be organic and not beat them over the head. I want them to enjoy the read, close the book and say, “Wow, I never thought of it that way.”

Caroline: What long-term plans do you have for your career?

Catherine: I think I want what most writers do—write more books. I have lots of book ideas, enough to last the rest of my life.

Caroline: Would you like to tell us what you’re working on now?

Catherine: I’m trying to decide between the partial books I have now.  Since I read in several subgenres of romance, I don’t want to limit myself to writing in only one subgenre. I have several different directions I could go now as I have a historical inspirational, a sweet romantic comedy, and a couple of contemporary sweet romances with inspirational elements waiting in the wings for my attention.  I tend to work on several projects at a time.

Caroline: What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

Catherine: Keep writing and learn everything you can about your craft, and start your social media way before you ever send your manuscript out. Getting a handle on that while you are going through the editing and publishing process can be crazy.

Caroline: Tell us a fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you.

Catherine: I own five different Christmas trees, and as many themed decoration collections, that I rotate through each year. The family never knows what Christmas will look like at my house. Will it be southwest themed? Traditional looking with ornaments collected over the years? An all gold Christmas with a gold-colored travel themed ornaments?  Maybe crocheted snowflakes and snowmen will dominate.  This year it was Grandma’s aluminum tree, complete the color wheel and handmade ornaments. Or if I’m lazy, I might just stuff silk poinsettias in the tree branches. Which, by the way, makes a very classy tree.  If I’m really lazy we just set up the small fiber optic table tree and run the train set around it.

Caroline: A kindred spirit! I love decorating for Christmas. Share something about you that would surprise or shock readers.

Catherine: I’m a huge  Bachelor/Bachelorette television show fan. I’m thrilled Katherine and Sean are still together and will be watching their televised wedding. Yes, I know most people think it’s a big, orchestrated hoax, but I root for the contestants to find true love, because I believe in true love. Everyone has a soul mate and I hope everyone could find that happiness in life. My belief in true love is why I love to write romance.

Caroline: Is your book a series? If so, how long? Family saga, other?

Catherine: No. THE NUN AND THE NARC is a stand alone book.

Caroline: Is there anything else you’d like readers to know about you?
Catherine: My book, THE NUN AND THE NARC is an EPIC finalist in the action/adventure category. I’m very excited to be a finalist.

Congratulations, Catherine. Now here’s more about THE NUN AND THE NARC:

The Nun & the Narc
By Catherine Castle

THE NUN AND THE NARC Blurb:

Where novice Sister Margaret Mary goes, trouble follows. When she barges into a drug deal the local Mexican drug lord captures her. To escape she must depend on undercover DEA agent Jed Bond. Jed’s attitude toward her is exasperating, but when she finds herself inexplicable attracted to him he becomes more dangerous than the men who have captured them, because he is making her doubt her decision to take her final vows. Escape back to the nunnery is imperative, but life at the convent, if she can still take her final vows, will never be the same.

Nuns shouldn’t look, talk, act, or kiss like Sister Margaret Mary O’Connor—at least that’s what

Jed Bond thinks. She hampers his escape plans with her compulsiveness and compassion and in the process makes Jed question his own beliefs. After years of walling up his emotions in an attempt to become the best agent possible, Sister Margaret is crumbling Jed’s defenses and opening his heart. To lure her away from the church would be unforgivable—to lose her unbearable.

THE NUN AND THE NARC Excerpt:

Another row of pottery shattered, sending fragments into the car like tiny projectile rockets. Sending up a quick prayer, she covered her head.

Slamming the door shut as he passed, the man leapt over the trunk. He jerked open the driver’s door then jumped behind the wheel. Jamming the car into gear, he roared out into the market street. Shoppers and vendors screamed, leaping out of the car’s path.

Margaret scrambled into the passenger seat. “Stop this car immediately!”

“Keep down,” he ordered, “unless you want to get shot.”

The rear window glass erupted into the car’s interior, punctuating his words. The man fired at the attackers through the shattered back window.

“Shot?” Her voice rose an octave. “Oh, dear Lord in Heaven, what have I gotten into?”

“Trouble, Lady.” He fired off another round. “Big trouble.”

Margaret slid deeper into the front passenger seat, grabbing the door handle as the car careened around a corner.

I’m going to die. In a car crash. With a strange man. Heart pumping madly, she let go of the door handle just long enough to cross herself then grabbed it again as the car swerved. A guardian angel would be good here, Lord. And make it Dale Earnhardt! They swerved around another corner and she held on for dear life.

Oh, Mother Superior, maybe you’re right. Maybe I’m not good nun material after all. Who else in the convent could get themselves into a mess like this?

VALENTINE'S SPECIAL BONUS

Just in time for Valentine’s Day reading—here is my boxed set HEARTS AND FLOWERS. The set contains three western historical romance novellas already for sale, but readers get one free by buying the boxed set. Three for the price of two—win/win.

You know I love writing and my readers. Boxing these three novellas to give readers a bonus is my way of saying thanks for your loyalty in buying my books. I appreciate and adore each of you for making me an Amazon bestselling author of western historical romance.

Here are the three in HEARTS AND FLOWERS:

SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME is one of my favorite of my works. Probably the reason is that the heroine’s mom is named for my own mother, Lena Mae Phifer. The heroine is named for my mom’s sister, Elizabeth Margaret Phifer. Although my aunt was never called Beth, she is in this novella. The handsome hero, Matt, has to unravel mysteries, stop a murder, and recover kidnap victims. Of course, the lovely heroine does her share. This novella is sensual.

HAPPY IS THE BRIDE is a hectic tale of a wedding in which whatever can go wrong does. But Beth Pendleton and Mason Whittaker become married and found their own family. I thought of this story as sweet until a stuffy review accusing me of writing . . . well, never mind. It is sensual, especially the epilogue.  No one is murdered, no one is kidnapped, no crimes occur—at least not actual crimes. A few things deserve a slap or two from our heroine, but all ends well.

LONG WAY HOME is set in Georgia near the end of the Civil War. Parmelia Bailey is left in charge of her extended family while the men are off at War. That includes her brother’s fiancé and her family, who must be rescued from approaching fighting. Parmelia risks a lot to bring the Hardeman women to stay at her grandmother’s home. Darrick McDonald, Parmelia’s true love who moved away, has returned wearing  Union blue. This is the only time I have set an entire story outside Texas.

Bless y’all!

Excerpt:
PROLOGUE

February 1876

The man was dead. Deader than a doornail in a rotted-out door. Lily Sutter was not going to like this. She supposed she should call her the Widow Sutter now.

Becky looked at John Sutter’s body, splayed across the rocks like the annual  sacrifice to some unknown god. She should probably try and wrangle his body onto the back of her mule, but didn’t really think she could manage the task alone. She heaved a sigh. Time to check and see if Billy was home or if she would have to collect him from The Gem. She hadn’t given him enough gold for the Bella Union.

She’d lied to him once again, only given him part of their gold. If she gave him all the gold, like he wanted, nothing would be left to buy food or the pans and other equipment she needed to work their claim. And then there’d be no gold for him to go drown his sorrows. Sorrows that were her fault, according to him, for having killed her Ma getting born. And then he’d beat her and she wouldn’t be able to work so there’d be no gold and the cycle would start again. Better to lie to him.

Resigned, she grabbed the mule’s bridle. Buster snorted at the small jerk she gave the gear as she started walking downstream along the narrow path that followed the creek. She’d made this path, going back and forth to their claim on a daily basis. After collecting Billy from the Gem, after he’d spent another night of drowning his sorrows. Better there than at their campsite where he’d just complain and then beat her for the hell of it.

She and her father, Billy, originally came from the coal mines of West Virginia. But that was so long ago and there’d been many, many stops along the way. Every time she hoped this might be the place, the one they could put down roots. But it never was. Billy leached the good will from the townsfolk until there was none left and they had to move on. She’d gotten lucky with her education. One of the ladies she worked for took pity on her and taught her to read, write and talk so she was able to get better jobs as time went on.

As for Billy, the fresh air was good for him, made him feel better but him feeling better was a two-edged sword. He felt better so, rather than working the claim, he took their gold and spent it on booze and whores at the Gem in Deadwood. He was smart enough to know he got more booze and whores for his money at the Gem than the Bella Union where they were classier but much more expensive. He was at the Gem so often she had to go and collect him about three nights a week. He’d get so drunk he couldn’t find his way out of the saloon much less back to their claim.

She’d get Dan Dority to load Billy on the mule and then, when they got back to camp, she’d untie him and let him slip to the ground. She used to try holding him up, to slow his fall, but too many times, she’d ended up trapped beneath him until she could shove his heavy body off her. And him, totally ignorant of the whole situation, blissfully sleeping off the effects of his alcohol fueled stupor.

There’d been just as many times she left him at the Gem and let them deal with his sorry ass. Now since she needed to tell someone about Sutter, she figured she’d go ahead and get Billy, too.
Becky got on the mule and headed back to Deadwood. She went to the Gem but rather than collecting her father, she told Dan about Sutter.

“I’ll see his body gets taken care of.  In the meantime you get your father and get out. I keep telling you, this ain’t no place for a girl like you to be seen.”

“Oh, I don’t know, Dan,” said Al Swearengen, owner of the Gem and procurer of flesh. “We could give her a job that’s a lot easier than working that claim.”

He leaned on the hand rail of the second floor walkway looking dapper in his black three piece pinstriped suit. He wore no tie and his shirt was open at the collar. Becky craned her neck to look upward at him. “Not today, Mr. Swearengen, but I’ll be sure and keep your offer in mind.”

Swearengen laughed. A great rumble from deep in his chest. “You do that. Dan, help load Billy on to her mule.”  He turned away and went back into his office. “See you tomorrow, Becky.” he called over his shoulder.

She nodded, then looked at the fancy women lounging around the room in varying states of undress and silently agreed with Dan. She should get out. She didn’t understand how they could do what they did. She’d rather work day and night in the creek than let a man touch her in that way.

The Author

Cynthia Woolf was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent  her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.

Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

She worked her way through college and went to work full time straight after graduation and there was little time to write. Then in 1990 she and two friends started a round robin writing a story about pirates. She found that she missed the writing and kept on with other stories. In 1992 she joined Colorado Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America. Unfortunately, the loss of her job demanded she not renew her memberships and her writing stagnated for many years.

In 2001, she saw an ad in the paper for a writers conference being put on by CRW and decided she'd attend. One of her favorite authors, Catherine Coulter, was the keynote speaker. Cynthia was lucky enough to have a seat at Ms. Coulter's table at the luncheon and after talking with her, decided she needed to get back to her writing. She rejoined both CRW and RWA that day and hasn't looked back.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

Formats to buy: paperback and Kindle

SYNOPSIS:

Unemployed with no prospects, Dorian Wells is a young man trying desperately to stay afloat and be a good father to his toddler son. While already struggling to pay the bills and earn proper visitation with his child, Dorian’s tumultuous life is thrown into further upheaval when his mother is suddenly hospitalized.

On the verge of losing everything, it seems Dorian finally has a stroke of luck when he inadvertently learns of a potential opportunity with Jakkaru, a decadent, cut-throat organization that pays handsomely by the body count. Dorian’s lifelong friend, Rafe Ibadiah, is his ticket into Jakkaru and soon Dorian is training to be a professional hitman. But learning how to properly kill for a living is not as easy as it seems, and he quickly discovers the short arms of theory are a far reach from reality as the harrowing journey makes him question everything he believes.

The final test before full acceptance into Jakkaru is a contract Dorian must complete alone. Delivered to him via a small red envelope, the name inside propels the stakes of this dangerous game higher than ever before. Dorian will sacrifice anything for his son, but it’s not until he is ordered to do the unthinkable that he grasps the horrific depth of his commitment.

Award-winning author, K. Baskett, expertly weaves a chilling tale of suspense in ENVELOPE: RED that culminates in a shocking look at the prickly nuances of loyalty. Gritty and authentic, Dorian’s story is ultimately a poignant examination of the human condition - what lies within the heart of us all.

Excerpt:

The butler goes to the corner of the room where a small stand holds a glass carafe of water and crystal goblets. He pours some and hands the glass to me, then exits the room, clicking the door quietly closed behind him.

I take a shaky sip, and my parched lips scream with relief. The cool water helps to alleviate my perspiration as well, which has already thoroughly embarrassed me.

“Welcome, Dorian,” says the man seated behind the desk. He is large and stocky, with a bald head and bad skin. He observes me through black, beady eyes that don't seem to blink. “I am Mr Black, and this is my colleague, Mr Red.” He indicates the man flanking his ornate leather chair. Mr Red nods at me slightly. He is reedy with delicate wireframe glasses perched on his beaky nose.

“H-hello,” I stutter, biting down nervous laughter at the absurdity of their names. My hands tremble so badly I am very nearly spilling my glass of water. I set it down gingerly on the small table beside my chair.

“We understand you are here because you're interested in becoming a member of our prestigious organization,” Mr Black begins.

“Yes, sir.”

“I see,” Mr Black says thoughtfully. “Well, as I'm sure you might imagine, we have to know a few things about anyone seeking to join our ranks. Therefore, we have taken the liberty to peek into your background.”

My saliva dries up, making my tongue swell like a blowfish and stick to the roof of my mouth.
Mr Red lifts an iPad from the desk and begins to read from it. “Dorian Wells, age twenty-five. No siblings. Both parents deceased; most recently the mother, Verona Marshall, from an advanced case of septicemia. One son, Josiah Wells, just turned two. Josiah's mother, Milan Carter, age twenty-three. No significant work history, just a few minimum wage jobs here and there. Once matriculated at the local community college but no degree. Currently unemployed. Recently granted a full visitation schedule for son, Josiah, by the family court. Girlfriend, Sekoya Williams, age twenty-nine; dating for about a year.” Mr Red stops reading from the iPad and looks directly at me.

“Congratulations.”

My stomach is turning somersaults hearing all this detailed intimate information; it's so surreal. The main thing that sticks out in my mind is that he said, 'both parents deceased.' I don't even know who my father is, and they apparently have not only identified him, but also discovered he is dead. I'm not sure what to say after this recitation, but I can tell they are waiting for me to speak, so I murmur,

“Yes, sir. That's me.”

Mr Black laces his pudgy fingers together on top of the desk. “You should know, Dorian: that was the summarized version.”
