When she arrived at the little facility her building provided, a quick look around confirmed she was the only one there. Just as she’d hoped, and exactly how she liked it to be. Smiling in satisfaction, she flipped on the television that was perched on the wall, and turned up the music on her iPod as loud as she could handle it. The multiple distractions would help her get through the extra mile she was planning to conquer. With chilled water bottle in place, she cranked up the treadmill to a nice brisk pace.

As her breathing picked up speed and her muscles began to warm, Ana’s eye caught a red flash along the bottom of the screen. Breaking News filled the bar, and the too-chipper-for-their-own-good reporters were suddenly getting serious. Since the volume was still muted, Ana couldn’t understand exactly what was going on, only that they were showing the wide stretch of river that ran along the outskirts of the city. She wiped the first beads of sweat from her brow, and used the remote to turn the volume of the television higher while simultaneously adjusting her music.

As the reporters spoke, home-video footage of something floating in the water rolled before her eyes. The camera zoomed in, the frame ever so shaky, and it became clearly apparent that the “something” was a person - face down with long brown hair spread out like a Catholic halo. It appeared another victim had been pulled out of the water; the count was quickly tallying up. A young woman this time, and possibly one who had gone missing the night before.

Ana’s pulse skipped a few beats as they replayed the video over and over. There was something familiar about the long, lean body. Slowing the treadmill to a stop, she ripped the ear buds from her head to give the segment her entire attention.

...it appears at first glance that the victim suffered from a deep cut to the throat, and received multiple stab wounds to the chest...

The beads of accumulated sweat turned cold on Ana’s brow. She immediately reached for her phone and dialed Kylie’s number.

“What the hell, Ana?” Came her friend’s groggy voice.

“Turn your TV on. Channel four. Hurry.” Ana said, eyes transfixed to the screen in front of her. “Recognize that face?”

...It’s thought the victim may be one of the young girls recently reported missing. The screen flashed candids of three possible women. All brunettes. All tall and thin. All roughly the same age. Among them was a photo of Mara, just as Ana had expected there would be.

But the body was too bloated and disfigured to be absolutely certain, and an autopsy would be needed.

... The body will be taken in for processing where officials hope to shed more light on the case in the near future. In the mean time, they’re cautioning residents to avoid....

“Did you see that?” Ana’s voice escaped in more of a demand than a question. “Please tell me I’m seeing things.”

“Oh my god...” Kylie whispered into the receiver, confirming the dread that was building in Ana’s stomach. “Do you really think it’s her?”

“I know for a fact it is.” Ana declared, the pull in her gut getting stronger by the minute. “The autopsy will confirm it.”

“So, what does this mean exactly now?”

“That maybe I should have been listening a little closer when I was talking to Mara.” She said with regret as she swiped her forehead with the back of her hand. “And maybe I should have asked more questions. There’s a story here, I’m sure of it now.”

“What are you going to do?” Kylie’s voice was decidedly more alert now.

Ana shook her head. “I have no idea.”

Though if she were to be truthful with herself in that moment, she’d already made up her mind. Ana flipped off the television, and left the little gym to get started.

Caroline: Where did you grow up? Siblings? Locale? Were you considered a “bookworm” or a jock?  Married, single? Children?

Jessica: I grew up in small town America – a town called Westville in northern Indiana.  I graduated with less than 50 students, and I can tell you what happened to almost all of them – that’s how small of a town it was.  I have three younger and three older siblings.  Growing up I would consider myself a bookworm, but I did try and failed miserably at most sports.  I really wanted a Varsity letter so I did join everything, though. I was more of a class clown type – I actually was awarded ‘funniest’ and ‘most excuses’ in my Senior yearbook.

Caroline: I like fun people more than jocks, so I think you did well. Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

Jessica: I love historical romance.  My favorites are authors like Judith McNaught – even though I LOVE her contemporary, and the queen of all HR – Kathleen Woodiwiss.  I do read some contemporary/new adult now.  Lisa Renee Jones is probably my new favorite author.  I actually met her at the Romance Times Convention, and lost it.  I went total ‘fan girl” on her.

Caroline: What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?

Jesica: I love home improvement projects.  I know they’re not relaxing at all and it’s full of stress, but for some reason that kind of stress is enjoyable to me.  I’m a regular at my local Menards.

Caroline: Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?

Jessica: No favorite quotes as they pertain to life.  Except maybe ‘put on your big girl panties’.  I realize it’s not the prolific quote you were probably looking for, but it’s just so applicable to so many situations.

Caroline: It’s a quote my youngest daughter and I use a lot. How long have you been writing?

Jessica: I wrote a lot as a kid and all through high school and college.  I was in Speech and Debate in high school and college and I wrote and performed my own speeches.  After that, I took a really long break from writing fiction, but branched off.  I worked in healthcare, so I was writing articles for newsletters, or preparing speeches for conferences, so I really never stopped writing.  It wasn’t until just a couple years ago that I decided to sit down and purposefully write a book.

Caroline: Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?

Jessica: I write on my laptop because I need to be mobile.  I have two kids – ages 3 and 8, and to get some solitude I sometimes need to find a place in my house to hide.  I like to write in my bedroom, especially on my balcony.  I do have an office though, and that’s really where a lot of the “writing work” is done.

 Caroline: I write in my office. Are you a plotter or a panzer?

Jessica: I plot every chapter so that I know what’s going to happen.  I also capture lines or scenes in my head on post-its.  I’m not very good at writing out of sequence and trying to fit it all together, so the post-it notes help a lot with that.

Caroline: That’s the way I plot, too. What did we do before post-it notes? Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?

Jessica: I create collage characters of people I’ve met over the years.  They may have the traits of one person’s personality, but no particular character is ever the exact same from my personal life.

Caroline: Do you set daily writing goals? Word count? Number of chapters? Do you get a chance to write every day?

Jessica: I recently turned writing into my primary day job, so I just started creating goals for myself. Currently, I’m doing about one chapter a night during the week, less on the weekends.

Caroline: That’s a nice, steady output. What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

Jessica: You know those books that you wait for the pre-order to become available?  The books where you’ve been waiting nine months since the last one came out and you’re almost desperate to get the next one in the series?  That’s what I want from my readers.  I want my books to make readers laugh, and then at the end I’d love a tear or two.

Caroline: Me, too. What long-term plans do you have for your career?

Jessica: I’d love to keep doing what I’m doing now.  Potentially, I’d like to write some contemporary romance, but I’m really happy writing my historical romance.

Caroline: Would you like to tell us what you’re working on now?

Jessica: I have two projects in the pipeline.  The first is book three in the Regency Blooms series.  This is the story of Lilly, which actually predates all the other books.  I’m also working on another Regency outside of the series about a good girl gone bad.  It’s a lot of fun!

Caroline: What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

Jessica: Learn as much as you can about the industry.  Listen to more experienced writers – find out what worked for them, what didn’t.  Establish a social media presence, and make sure you engage readers.  And most of all – WRITE!

Caroline: Sound advice. What’s a fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you?

Jessica: When I was eight, my family moved into prison housing.  My dad worked for the prison, and that’s just where we lived.  So, my house was actually on prison grounds.  There was a van that patrolled all night, making it nearly impossible to sneak out (note that I said ‘nearly’).  And the inmates actually maintained our lawns and did the repair work on our home.  All this means is that I’ve seen a lot of tattoos and I have a pretty thorough understanding of the penal system. 

Caroline: Share something about you that would surprise or shock readers.

Jessica: I have Mr. Darcy tattooed on my foot.  Yep, Mr. Darcy.  Why would I tattoo my husband’s name, when Mr. Darcy will be around forever?

Caroline: I hope your husband shares that opinion. Is your book a series?

Jessica: It’s a series about four sisters.  It’s called the Regency Blooms series since they’re all named for plants.

Marc watched the faint outline come across the dense morning fog, becoming more discernible as it approached. The tall, thin figure was riding along at a perilous speed, given the morning’s lack of visibility. He thought perhaps it was some gangly young man misguided in the fog. It wouldn’t be the first time someone accidentally stumbled upon the vast property that made up his family’s immodest estate.

Then the fog parted in an almost biblical manner, revealing his gross inaccuracy.

Were those ... breasts?

Marc closed his eyes and thought for a moment. Typically, women didn’t ride alone at such an hour and they certainly didn’t wander unexpectedly across his property. It’d been quite a while, his last birthday to be exact, since his last intimate encounter with a woman—a gift, compliments of St. Regis—so there was always the possibility that perhaps his half-drunk, sex-starved mind had conjured up the sensual image.

He shook his head, opened his eyes, and looked back again toward the horizon.

Yes, those were most certainly breasts.

And she was most definitely not a young man. The woman’s riding habit pulled taut against her body as she raced toward him. Her hair was blowing behind her—various hues of auburn and gold, like wild flames curling about in the wind. Then a decidedly feminine voice burst through the morning’s silence, interrupting his self-doubt.

“Oh, thank goodness I found you!”

This was no mirage. She was indeed very real.

And very loud.

RECHARGING

Monday will be my 700th post on this blog. Be sure to return then to help with my celebration and sign up for giveaways!

Each of us has work-related stresses. Although I love writing, occasionally I need to refill my well. What do I do? I meet with my three amazing critique partners: Geri Foster, Carra Copelin, and Brenda Daniels.

We do more than critique each other’s work. We make suggestions, talk about marketing, discuss the new changes in social media, and laugh a lot. Yes, meeting with these women is group therapy.

Other writers understand that hearing voices in one’s head is not necessarily a sign of madness. Okay, maybe a little madness, but we are allowed in public. And we only harm people in our books. So far.

Maybe you don’t write, but you do something that requires your concentration and sometimes causes you stress. So what do you do? I have a suggestion—meet with friends.

Psychologists say that the camaraderie and laughter of meeting with other like-minded individuals creates the same endorphins that runners experience in a “runner’s high.” What’s better, those endorphins from getting together with others hang around for up to three days. Yep. Goofing off with friends is beneficial to your mental health!

And there’s no major plan required. Call a friend and go to lunch or dinner. Join a book club, Bible study, bridge or bunco group—whatever appeals to you. Even if you enjoy the solitary pursuits of knitting, crochet, quilting, scrapbooking, gardening and so forth, join a group centered around those activities.

Even if—as I do—you enjoy time alone, occasionally meeting with others to exchange ideas boosts your morale and broadens your outlook. Not all of us are extroverts, but we must force ourselves to get up and get out of our routine. For me, this means venturing out of the comfort of my pink writing cave. But—my psyche protests—I love it here. So, I have to get tough with myself and make myself leave the security of the place where I’m most comfortable.

Today is critique day. I submitted my pages earlier in the week and have read and commented on my critique partners’ submissions. They’re good writers, by the way. Even the one who’s not yet published has great story ideas. I’ve printed out their pages and have them in my handy tote bag ready to walk out the door.

We meet at a local restaurant. The staff there know we like to sit in the front corner and that we’ll be there a while, but we tip well to make up for tying up the table. When I leave the restaurant, I’ll be recharged and ready to jump back into my writing.

PROLOGUE

 April 1876 - St. Louis, Missouri 

Liam Anderson sat in front of a blazing fire, in his pajamas and robe, puffing on his pipe, reading, for the last time in this house. The place he’d called home for so many years. The kids were asleep upstairs. Sleep had eluded him and he’d risen to read until he got tired.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

He looked up from the book he read and glanced at the mantel clock. One of the few things he hadn’t packed away. “What in the world? Who would be out in this weather at this hour?”

What the hell?” said Liam, when he opened the door to his two younger brothers. “Jake? Zach? What are you two doing here? It’s the middle of the night.”

Zach growled from behind Jake. “Are you going to let us in or make us stand in this rain all night?”

“Come in. Zach put that gun away,” said Liam.

“Can’t until the kid here,” he poked Jake in the back with his gun, “is inside and we’ve talked to you.”

Jake, the youngest of his brothers, walked into the foyer of the house, followed closely by Zach. He stared down the hallway, packed with luggage and boxes down to the parlor, but didn’t question it. Didn’t even seem to notice that the house was packed up ready to move.Both of them were haggard, completely worn out. Their coats were soaked through and they couldn’t have been comfortable. He’d never seen them looking so exhausted or…desperate.

“Sorry to do this to you, Liam. I know you’re leaving tomorrow,” said Zach as he holstered his gun and dripped water onto the foyer floor. He threw his hat onto one of the steamer trunks.

Jake followed suit.It was times like these that the difference between his brothers was so striking. Zach with his nearly black hair and dark blue eyes. There was one in every generation with the coloring of their Gypsy great grandmother, Zach was theirs and their father had been the one in his generation. It was rare to have two gypsies in the same family, usually it was an uncle or aunt rather than a parent of the latest child with the coloring.

Jake with dark blond, overly long hair and light blue eyes most resembled their dear mother.Liam was somewhere between the two, with light brown hair and gray eyes. His children were different as night and day, too. Ten year old David resembled Liam not only physically but mentally too. David always seemed to weigh his words before he spoke them. Whereas Hannah, the gypsy of her generation, said whatever came into her little head. She was only five, but even at her age, David had been as contemplative as he was now.He smiled thinking of his children. They were his joy. His reason for living. He closed his eyes and grounded himself in the present and answered Jake.

“Yes. At first light. Now, tell me what’s going on and why you brought Jake here at gun point.”

“Only way I could get him to come,” growled Zach.

“And?” Liam said, exasperated. “Don’t make me beat the story out of you word by word, little brother. Just tell me the problem.”Liam pointed at the two chairs in front of the fire and then went to the fireplace and stoked the banked coals back to a roaring blaze. He really didn’t need this now, not when he was leaving in the morning. Not when he was so close to putting the old, hurtful memories behind him.

SUMMER READING - WHAT'S ON YOUR LIST?

Anytime is reading time for me, but many people have more free time in summer. Schools are out, vacations roll around, and people relax by the sea or a pool. Even though I’m stuck in my pink writing cave, I love to read.

Recently, I read several of the new Prairie Rose Publishing anthologies. I know most of the authors who contribute to these collections, and each is an excellent author. You can’t go wrong with any of the works. LASSOING A BRIDE and LASSOING A GROOM are just released.

I love Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz, and recently finished her latest, OTHERWISE ENGAGED. As usual, her story captured my interest from the first page. I love her books.

Geri Foster has released WRONG GUY, the second of her Accidental Pleasures series. She’s also in the boxed set, SPICE BOX. In addition, don’t forget OUT OF THE PAST, the novella about Zoe in her Falcon series. I’m eagerly awaiting OUT OF THE DEPTHS, the next Falcon book for non-stop action and romance.

Another author I love is Loretta Chase. Her descriptions and characterization are amazing. I’ve preordered her VIXEN IN VELVET, the third in her trilogy of dressmaker sisters. The book will be released later in June.

Sylvia McDaniel has released DESPERATE, a delightful prequel novella to her new Lipstick and Lead series about the Mackenzie sisters who turn bounty hunter to save their home after their father’s death. I’m eagerly awaiting the first sister’s story, which will be about Meg.

For those who enjoy stories involving Native Armericans, Mary Adair has new covers for her Passion series and has added RAVEN’S PASSION. The other two in the series are PASSION’S VISION and PASSION’S PRICE. Mary’s husband is descended from James Adair, author of the definitive book on Cherokee in the 18^th century. She used James Adair’s book in her research.

Kathy Shaw’s latest release is BLONDIE AND THE HITMAN, a Darla Bodecker mystery. This is a fun read with a sassy heroine and a dash of romance. Kathy’s wicked sense of humor always makes me smile.

On my TBR list are MY KIND OF CRAZY by Katie O’Sullivan; AGAINST THE WILD by Kat Martin; SHAME ON YOU by Tara Sivec; ON THE HOOK by Cindy Davis; MAIL ORDER MISFIT by Kirsten Osbourne; and A TEXAS CATTLE DRIVE by Andy Adams. Those should keep me busy reading for a while, right? But new releases by Carra Copelin,  Paty Jager, Kathy Ivans, Jacquie Rogers (she's included in the Prairie Rose antholgies), and others will keep me adding to the list.
