Ash: Guns for Hire Book 6 by Jo-Ann Roberts

Ash
Guns for Hire Book 6
by Jo-Ann Roberts

Ash is the newest book in the Guns for Hire series.

Book Blurb:

An outlaw looking for a fresh start.

A schoolteacher who might hold the key to the entire town’s salvation.

Ash “Shotgun” McCrae can never make up for all the wrong he’s done. After leaving a notorious outlaw gang, he thought he’d discovered the peaceful existence he’d been looking for when he found work laying tracks for the railroad in Rivers Bend. Yet, when trouble shows up in town, he fears he may never free himself from the burden of his past.

Schoolteacher Kate Cummings stands as the one bright light in contrast to the curious looks and behind-the-glove whispers blowing through the town. The arrival of Padraic “Patch” Rooney and his gang challenges the small-town serenity she holds dear. Still, her steadfast trust in Ash awakens the strength of courage within them all, giving rise to the collective defiance against the approaching danger.

In a deadly game of dangerous outlaws and secret schemes, Kate and Ash must decide whether they are willing to risk everything for their love, including their lives.

 Author Bio:

Born and raised in western Massachusetts, Jo-Ann Roberts was fascinated by America’s Old West and always felt she was destined to travel on a wagon train following the Oregon Trail. With her love of history and reading, she began reading historical romance during high school and college. Victoria Holt, Jude Deveraux, and Roseanne Bittner were among her favorites. Influenced by her father, she fell in love with John Wayne, James Garner, and her all-time favorite, James Stewart and grew up watching Wagon Train, Bonanza and Rawhide.

A firm believer in HEA with a healthy dose of realism, Jo-Ann strives to give her readers a sweet historical romance while imparting carefully researched historical facts, personalities, and experiences relative to the time period. Her romances take her readers back to a simpler time to escape the stress of modern life by living in a small town where families and friends help one another find love and happiness.

When she isn’t creating believable plots and relatable heroes and heroines, Jo-Ann enjoys spending time with her husband, children and grandson. She also enjoys baking, quilting and eating way too much chocolate.

After 38 years in public education in Connecticut and Maryland, she’s now calls North Carolina home.

MEMORIAL DAY MEMORIES

By Caroline Clemmons

There were times (and may still be in some areas) when people went to the cemetery to clear out weeds and trash so that the graves of loved ones looked as nice as possible. I’m aware of a business in Parker County, Texas that sends their employees out to clean cemeteries in the months they are not delivering much gas to homes. For the most part, though, cemeteries are “perpetual care” where the cost of the gravesite covers continual care.

That’s the type in which my parents and Hero’s are buried. My mom chose to be cremated, but then have her ashes buried next to my father. I was fortunate to have parents who set a good example and who cared about me. I’m sorry my father didn’t live long enough to see me published, although I suppose he knows anyway. Here are the photos of my parents, separately because they never sat for a portrait together. I wish they had.

Pearson Madison Johnson
My handsome dad

My dad, Pearson Madison Johnson, was a generation older than my mom, Lena Mae Phifer. She was well on the way to being an old maid when she married him. I was born just over three years later. At the time, we lived in Dodson, Texas, almost on the Oklahoma line. Dad managed the Davis cotton gin. When I was not quite one, Mr. Davis died and one of his sons decided to manage the gin, so my Dad was out of a job. My half-siblings urged him to move to California where the four of them lived. We moved to Southern California, settling in Oildale, a suburb of Bakersfield not far from my oldest half-sister. Dad was a contractor who built houses.

Lena Mae Phifer Johnson
My sweet mom

But, I developed San Joaquin Valley Fever and the doctor said I had to leave the valley or I would die. In fact, I was so sick that I don't remember our move the summer before I was eight. We moved back to Texas and I did improve remarkably. I grew up in Lubbock, a very nice place to live if you can take the sandstorms. Obviously, we could. My younger brother, an Oops baby, was born when I was ten.

I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for my father to start over all those times. He was in his fifties when I was born. He worked in hot temperatures to get his start in California. Then he had to start over when we moved back to Texas and he ended up buying cotton until he lost his eyesight fifteen years before he died. Since he was much older than my mom, he died before she did. In fact, he died on May 26, 1972.

Mom loved her children, grandchildren, her stepchildren, and their children. The day of her death on January 24, 2007, she’d been to a meeting of our church women and we went to lunch at her favorite restaurant for sweet and sour chicken. Surprisingly, the minister accompanied us. I spent the afternoon with her chatting and helping her with a few bookkeeping details. She had such a wonderful time that day. It was only in the evening that her stomach distress began.

When she had broken her hip four years earlier, she confessed my dad came to her and held out his hand, but she was afraid to take it then. She said she was no longer afraid, and if it happened again, she would take his hand. Hero and I were with her when she lay dying. She reached up her hand above her as if grasping something in the air. Then, her eyes rolled back and she passed. I am positive my dad came for her. Though I miss them still, knowing they are together is of some comfort.

SAMANTHA IS HERE!

By Caroline Clemmons

It’s finally here! SAMANTHA: Sweet Historical Western Romance, Book 5, Love Train Series, is now available in e-book, print, and Kindle Unlimited!

Have you ridden a passenger train? I love riding the train, but haven’t in years. On long trips, like Samantha, we sat up all the way. She was well-to-do and merely saving the cash she had for her escape. When I was a child and we rode the Santa Fe Chief, we couldn’t afford to book a sleeping compartment. I still loved the trips. I’ve also been fortunate enough to ride trains in Great Britain and Germany. In Scotland, one called a Budd train, didn’t even have an engineer or conductor. I enjoyed each type of passenger train and would love to travel on one again.

Whether or not you’ve ridden a train, you’ll enjoy reading about Samantha and Kent’s trip to Oregon on the Union Pacific. Samantha is escaping from a killer who’s targeted her. Kent has resigned from the Pinkerton Detective Agency and is on the way to his Oregon ranch.

COVER REVEAL FOR CHARLOTTE'S CHALLENGE

I’m so excited about this story that I want to share the cover. The preorder is up and CHARLOTTE’S CHALLENGE will be released September 18.

The Universal Amazon Link is https://mybook.to/Bret

Here’s the legend on which the series is based:

The Golden Legacy

In 1734 a pirate brigantine attacked a merchant ship, The Golden Fleece, in the Caribbean. Although smaller, the merchant ship bested the pirate craft that contained a treasure trove of gold and jewels. A dying pirate claimed the Incas had cursed anyone who misused the treasure, hence the reason the merchant crew was victorious. The treasure would also bless anyone who used it for good. The greedy merchant captain, James Carlson, was killed during the battle, but his eighteen year old daughter, Sarah, survived in her cabin.

Mindful of the curse and to thank God for their salvation, she asked the crew members to split the treasure equally, but to make a binding pledge that they would keep only twenty percent for their own use, and give ten percent to help others. With the rest, each was to buy something of great value that could be passed down to their descendants, with the curse passing onto anyone who broke the line and used it selfishly. If used selfishly, the treasure would be lost but reappear in some form after skipping a generation.

You can understand why I wanted to be a part of this multi-author project. Can’t you conjure numerous possibilities for this series? I’m revealing the cover for the historical that is set in 1885 Texas. Early next year, I’ll write a contemporary romance for the series.

Here’s the blurb for CHARLOTTE'S CHALLENGE:

Bret Craig is a descendant of one of the crew of The Golden Fleece. Over a century ago the merchant ship had prevailed against pirates carrying a treasure of cursed Inca gold. The legacy promises retribution against anyone who misuses the treasure. Bret has heard the story all his life but he believes the tale is a myth and that he’s in no danger if he spends the money selfishly. Ignoring his sister’s warning, he sets out for a grand adventure heading west.

Mail-order bride Charlotte Dunn lost her husband to a rustler’s bullet. Now she’s in danger of losing the ranch her husband built and intended passed down to his eldest son. Charlotte’s two stepsons are riding their horses when they see Bret fall from his horse and strike his head on a stone. Once he regains consciousness, he has amnesia. She nurses Bret and plans to sell their remaining cattle to pay the mortgage on the ranch. Bret regains his memory and learns the remainder of the herd has now been stolen. Worse, the villain does not give up easily.

They must work together to defeat those trying to ruin Charlotte’s attempt to save the ranch.  Are two people at cross purposes able to embrace the love blossoming between them?

I hope the blurb intrigues you and you preorder CHARLOTTE’S CHALLENGE. I believe you’ll enjoy Charlotte and Bret’s story.

MAIL-ORDER OLIVIA

Kathleen Lawless is very excited by the launch of her first ever Mail Order Bride Book, MAIL ORDER OLIVIA.

About the Book

Who to believe?

Olivia thought Robert was dead. A year-and-a-half later and newly widowed, she comes across Robert's ad for a mail-order bride. Seeking his protection for herself and her daughter, she goes after the truth, and gets more than she bargained for.

Robert believed Olivia never wanted to see him again, and is finally ready to move on from the heartbreak. When Olivia shows up claiming to be his mail-order bride, the sight of her brings back all the pain of losing her the first time. Seeing her with another man's child adds salt to the wound.

Can this couple move past the pain and betrayal to find new happiness?

Snippet

Robert Fulsom paced the train platform in Yuma, practicing what he would say to his mail-order bride when she arrived.  Sorry for dragging her across the country didn’t seem adequate.  He had to make sure she realized it was nothing to do with her—it was him.  He simply wasn’t ready to take on a wife.
He glanced again at the telegram in his hand.  Olive Brown.  He had no idea what she looked like, but even her name sounded drab, poor thing.  He’d heard many of these mail-order brides were either homely or plump, forced to marry a stranger sight-unseen because they had no suitors back east.  He had to tactfully ensure she didn’t think he was rejecting her because of her appearance.
***
In the cramped train seat, Olivia cradled her sleeping daughter to her chest, grateful for the respite after more than a week of trying to keep Chloe entertained, when all the little bundle of energy wanted to do was crawl around and try to walk.  At thirteen months, Olivia expected Chloe would be taking her first step any day.
She deliberately hadn’t used her real name in her telegram to Robert. At first, she’d been overjoyed to learn he wasn’t dead as she’d been led to believe.  Then doubt set in.  Why had he not returned for her as promised?  And why was his ad for a bride tucked into a coat pocket of her deceased husband?

NEW PINKERTON MATCHMAKER RELEASE AND GIVEAWAY!

Celebrate with me—I have a new release! I’m excited to announce that AN AGENT FOR MAGDALA, book 37 of the popular Pinkerton Matchmaker Series, is now available from Amazon in e-book, print, and in KU. This book was both fun to write and a challenge.

Most of this sweet romance and adventure takes place in one of my favorite cities, San Antonio, Texas. Even though I've been to San Antonio numerous times, I did a lot of research to discover what the city was like at the time of this story set in fall of 1871. I was surprised at how many things were the same or similar. The Menger Hotel is still in operation and is a well-known and excellent hotel that has been expanded and updated over its 160 years.

of this book in 1871

One surprise for me was that the Alamo originally had a flat roof instead of the arched one from the restoration. I’m a native Texan and didn’t know that. The famous Rose Window at the San Jose Mission has a poignant story—perhaps a myth—which I included in the book.

My daughters and I have always enjoyed the Mercado, where we enjoy browsing and snacking. At the time of AN AGENT FOR MAGDALA, shopping was spread out but not that different, as you can see from the photo below, which was taken in 1880.

AN AGENT FOR MAGDALA

So much happens in AN AGENT FOR MAGDALA. The heroine poses as Princess Magdala of Bayergrovenia and the hero poses as her husband, the Duke of Montpelier. The princess' jewels are bait for the thieves. Well, you just need to read the book, so here’s the summary:

She craves adventure, but this may be too much…
His job means the world to him…
Capturing jewel thieves will test them…

Magdala leaps at the opportunity to become a Pinkerton agent. Learning the position requires a paper marriage shocks but doesn’t deter her. Maggie plans to get an annulment before her unusual family learns of the situation. She’s determined to prove she has the grit to be an excellent investigator. But, why does she have to be partnered with the one man who has been rude to her?

Douglas “Cloud” Ryan loves being a Pinkerton agent. Otherwise, he’d never go along with his boss’ crazy plan to marry him to a female agent. He’s certain women have no business dealing with criminals. After barely surviving the stagecoach trip from Denver to San Antonio Maggie needs to stay in the background and let him solve the case. He has reasons to distrust women, especially women like Maggie.

Can Maggie and Cloud catch the jewel thieves plaguing an historic San Antonio hotel without becoming victims? Will they take a chance on the love growing between them?

The Universal Amazon link is http://mybook.to/Magdala

Cover by Virginia McKevitt

To tempt you, here’s an excerpt from their departure in Denver when Cloud is still angry because he has been paired with a woman he thinks will be a hindrance:

At the depot, the stage driver and his second loaded the luggage on top of the stage.
The driver sent them a sour look. “Brought everything you own, did you? Other passengers need space for their things, too.”
Maggie touched the driver’s arm. “Thank you for your help when I know this must be trying for you.”
She gestured to her skirt showing when her unbuttoned coat flapped open. “You understand how much room is required for all the skirts and petticoats and fripperies required of a woman. Such a trial that society demands we change clothes so often. I can’t imagine what I’d do if you weren’t so accommodating.”
Cloud was certain the middle-aged driver blushed under his tan. “Don’t you worry none, ma’am. We’ll find places for everything. You just get inside and settle as comfortably as you can. Won’t be pleasant for a lady like you. Road’s bumpy and twisty and dangerous. We’ll be going straight through until we get to Trinidad. ‘Course you can stretch your legs when we change horses.”
She smiled at the man. “I’m confident you’ll get us to our destination safely.” She climbed up into the coach with assistance from the driver.
Cloud followed, awed at the change in the driver’s attitude. Maybe having Princess Snobby along wouldn’t be as bad as he’d imagined.

I hope you’ll read and love this romance!

NEW RELEASE -- MAIL-ORDER MORIAH!

I’m so excited to announce my new release, MAIL-ORDER MORIAH, which is a Brides of Beckham romance and the first of my new Pearson Grove Series. Beta readers have told me this is their favorite of those I’ve written. I hope you’ll read and enjoy this sweet western historical. Here’s the mini-synopsis:

Moriah Singleton faced hardship to get from England to America but met more problems once she arrived. The only apparent honorable solution was to become a mail-order bride in far away Texas. How will she ever save enough to bring her sister to America?

After a disastrous brief engagement ended badly, Scott Ferguson sent for a mail-order bride. He needs her help in his mercantile. He hopes his wife will also be his life’s helpmate.

Danger, family entanglements, and disaster await the couple. Will the problems bring them closer or drive them apart?

The universal Amazon buy link is http://getbook.at/MORIAH

MAIL-ORDER MORIAH is free on Kindle Unlimited and is available in paperback.

Here’s an excerpt from MAIL-ORDER MORIAH: (they're having dinner after their wedding)
Everyone stared at them, even more than the previous evening. Moriah thought they might as well be specimens on display at a museum. To make things more uncomfortable, Scott didn’t speak and she couldn’t think of anything to say either.
By the time their food arrived, she thought she would explode from tension. “Tomorrow I’d like to mail my parents a letter. Where’s the post office?”
His eyes held a glint of humor. “The store is the post office. I’ll give you a tour when we get home.”
“That will be helpful.”
“Do they know you’ve come west to be married?”
“I sent them a letter the evening before I left Massachusetts. In case they’d mailed me one before it reached them, I left postage, an envelope, and your address with my landlady at the boarding house where I stayed. She promised to forward my mail here.”
“You said you’re from Kent, but I don’t know how far that is from London.”
“The village where my family lives is about thirty miles south of London. My father grows hops. Where is your home?”
“If you mean my parents’ home, it’s about a hundred and fifty miles south-southwest near the Brazos River in McLennan County. My older brother helps our father farm.”
“Do they know you sent for a mail-order bride?”
Scott shifted on his chair. “I’d give anything if I hadn’t written them I was engaged. Now I don’t know how to explain what’s happened.”
His attitude annoyed her. “How hard could it be, Scott? You just write them and tell them the facts. Are they likely to visit?”
He rested his wrists on each side of his plate. “They plan to now that cold weather is here. Hard to leave the farm most of the year.”
“Don’t you think you should warn them?”
He toyed with his fork. “I thought maybe you could write them and explain.”
“Me? Is it a coward I’ve married? Are you afraid to tell your family the truth of your situation?”
He held up his hand. “No, that’s not the problem. My older brother Sean is always lording it over me about how much better he is at everything than I am. He’s one of the reasons I chose to buy a business away from where my folks live. Sean will lap up the news that I sent for a mail-order bride like it’s a gift from heaven.”
His eyes widened. “Not that there’s anything wrong with a mail-order bride, mind you. That’s not what I’m saying.”
She spoke very quietly. “Exactly what are you saying, Mr. Ferguson?” Her facial muscles ached from keeping a pleasant expression when she wanted to toss her coffee in his face and storm off.
“Look, all I’m saying is… well, you see… I might have bragged about my fiancée being from the wealthiest family in town and how she’d chosen me even though there were other eligible bachelors here.”
She met his gaze and arched an eyebrow. “And now you have to eat humble pie and it’s not going to taste good, is it?”
“You’re right. I don’t know how to go about wording the letter. I don’t want to seem ungentlemanly toward either you or Alexandra. I can’t explain why she broke the engagement without putting her in a bad light.”
“And you’re ashamed to admit to your family you have a mail-order bride.”
“No, no, I’m not ashamed of you or sending for you. All right, I admit I’m embarrassed in light of the bragging I did, but there’s nothing wrong with my having sent for you or your having come.”
She offered her sweetest smile. “I’m glad you feel that way, dear husband. When we get back to our rooms, we can both write letters to our parents. I’ll let you read mine. Do you dare let me read yours?”
Muscles clenched in his jaw. “You have a bargain, Mrs. Ferguson.” He scooped up the last bite of his apple pie then dabbed his mouth with the napkin.
She took her time dawdling over her dessert, more to annoy him than for any other reason. He was one of the best looking men she’d ever met and he had manners outwardly. Inside, she was afraid he had no spine. He’d soon learn she meant what she said.

Do you read seasonal stories year round or only at a particular holiday? I read them all year, especially Christmas books. I didn’t write a Christmas story this year because I had too many other projects going. I have three from past years, though. If you haven’t read them yet, please do! Each is a fun read and the last two are heartwarming as well.

Here are the mini-synopses and buy links:

MISTLETOE MISTAKE is a humorous historical novella in which Riley McCallister, a Montana sheriff contracts for a doctor by mail. The doctor who'd passed away was a mentor and close friend and Riley hopes to find the same camaraderie in the new one. When the doctor arrives, he turns out to be she, Shannon Callahan. This Old West sheriff feels women are supposed to tend the home and raise the children. Seeing his struggle to accept this woman doctor is fun. Unfortunately, Shannon is used to being criticized for her role in what is often viewed as a man’s profession. She proves herself to be an excellent doctor but is this enough to win the town’s respect?

ANGEL FOR CHRISTMAS is a contemporary story about Jacob, a dot.com billionaire who crashes his fancy sports car and meets St. Peter and St. Michael for a last chance assignment on earth. Help Susan Stephens save her family’s orphanage by Christmas Eve… or else. Many fans have told me this should be a Hallmark movie. Wouldn’t that be lovely? Sigh.

STONE MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS is part of the Stone Mountain, Texas series. Christmas has been Celia Dubois’s favorite time of year as long as she can remember. When she moves back with her parents a year after the death of her husband, the young widow is appalled at the town’s lack of Christmas spirit. Two months earlier, banditos had burned the church and crushed the townspeople’s strength of mind. Celia vows to return holiday joy to the town. Perhaps doing so might help mend her aching heart. Eduardo Montoya is determined to do whatever he must to capture Celia’s love.

If you're kind enough to read and enjoy one of these books, please leave a review on Amazon.
