The Matchmaker's Mare by Hywela Lyn

The Matchmaker's Mare
by Hywela Lyn

Book Blurb:

When Megan Johnson inherits an old cottage in the Welsh countryside, she seizes the opportunity to cut ties with her past life, after a broken romance. Her nearest neighbour, a horse trainer, is also something of an enigma. Single dad Glyn Phillips does his best to balance his love of horses and hard work, with his devotion to his son. When he meets his new neighbour, he knows he should resist any attraction. A feisty pony mare which mysteriously appears on his land adds to his problems, but another, larger problem lies ahead. Two matchmaking spirits find their carefully laid plans may not go as smoothly as they hope.

Excerpt:

Perhaps now she would be able to put the past behind her and instead look forward to the new possibilities this inheritance had given her. She smiled. No more business suits and severe hairstyles. No more working in a stuffy office at a monotonous, if well-paid, job. No more paying an extortionate rent for a small London flat—and no more trying to please Richard. From now on she intended to be totally independent, needing to please no-one but herself.

A faint scent of lavender drifted toward her on the warm, silky breeze. She sniffed appreciatively. It seemed a bit early for lavender, but she would have to check out the back garden once she settled in. There must be lavender bushes at the back of the cottage since she couldn’t see any in the rather overgrown and neglected front garden.

She inserted the key in the door and paused. Something like the tinkle of little bells sounded close by. She looked up to see if anything in the trees could account for the sound. It might be garden chimes, but her great uncle had not been the type to have such ‘fripperies’ as he would have called them. She didn’t think there were any other houses close enough for the sound to carry. She must be imagining things.

Megan took a deep breath and stepped into the cottage. A new home, a new job and a new beginning: A chance to put behind her the traumas of the last twelve months and start afresh.

Author Bio:

Hywela Lyn was born and raised in Wales, whose beautiful landscapes, myths and legends inspired her to write. A horse and dog lover, she weaves romantic futuristic adventures, and fantasy romances set in Wales, past and present.

Beloved Enemy, the third book in her Destiny Trilogy, was shortlisted in the Paranormal category of the prestigious Romantic Novelists Association RoNA awards and was a Runner up in the RONE Award. Her latest release is a ‘feel-good’ ‘sweet’ romance, incorporating a little mystery, a feisty stray mare – and not forgetting two rather playful but well-meaning spirits.

Her penname, Hywela Lyn is a combination of her first two names. (She has always been known by her second name 'Lyn' and thought it was time her Welsh first name was used as well.) When not writing or reading, she can usually be found outdoors with horses or her little ‘rescue’ dog - or just eating chocolate!

Cupid Grants A Second Chance by Carissa Harper

Cupid Grants A Second Chance
by Carissa Harper

A Tale of Two Writers

Most stories start with ‘what if…’

Ours had a different conception.

Mother and daughter watching a rom-com.

Daughter: We could have written that.

Mother: You’re right.

Daughter: We should write a book together.

Mother: I love that plan. Got a kick-ass idea?

Daughter: Not yet. I’ll get back to you.

Mother: It needs to be high-concept.

A short time later, once the idea has germinated, the brainstorming and character creation begin. Slowly a plot emerges, the sequence of events is roughed out, plot points and turning points are in place, secondary characters pop in and out, and the all-important romance trope—friends-to-lovers—has been fine-tuned, along with the setting, Seattle Washington, and a secondary trope, Rockstar Romance (light).

With sixty published romances under her belt, mother quickly bangs out what she calls a ‘shitty first draft’ and hands it over to daughter to practice her newly-minted writing skills by fleshing out and glitzing up. Much the way one might layer clothing, accessories and makeup onto a naked mannequin.

Shockingly, there are flaws. Plot holes. Inconsistencies. Saggy middle. Weak black moment. Rewrites take place. And more rewrites. And more revisions. Followed by a total overhaul of the plot.

Like any good romance, there is a happy ending. Mother and daughter are still friends and early readers are loving the book, staying up late and highlighting favorite scenes. Whew!

Time to move on to the second book in the series. Surely the next one will go more smoothly.

Anyone else with co-authoring experience, good, bad, or ugly, please feel free to share in the comments below.

Blurb:

A swoony, slow-burn romantic comedy for anyone who's ever wondered... what if?

Assistant producer Lexy Smith may have trouble deciding what to order in a restaurant, but there are two things she is absolutely clear on. One, her boss will only promote her to producer if she comes up with a brilliant show idea that can’t lose. And two, she’ll never date a guy friend again.

Charismatic frontman of a local band, Nate Douglas knows Lexy from his day job as a studio sound tech. When she confides her idea for a new reality show, Nate dives in to help her craft a first-rate pitch.

Their friendship is on fire, and the show—where contestants compete for a second chance with someone from their past—becomes the hottest thing on the air.

Her dream job. Her dream guy. Everything is falling into place better than she could have imagined…until the night it all falls apart.

Vulnerability, fueled by rum cocktails and the perfect soundtrack, turns friendship into fireworks, with a promise of something more. But then her best intentions backfire, leaving Nate feeling betrayed. And Lexy devastated.

Like the show’s contestants, Lexy and Nate have a choice. Will they let their past hold them back? Or will they, with a little help from Cupid, win a second chance at love?

Set in the bustling city of Seattle, "Cupid Grants a Second Chance" is a heartwarming tale of friendship, love, and the power of following your dreams. Fans of The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory will love this charming romance.

Excerpt:

Lexy wasn’t taking any chances.

She checked her watch, nerves churning in her stomach. Her interview was in forty-five minutes, and Google Maps told her Manor House Productions was a two-minute walk away. She’d allowed for plenty of time in case she got lost, the trolly derailed, the lions escaped from Woodland Park Zoo, or any other disaster that might cause her to be late.

Interviews made her nervous at the best of times, but this wasn’t any old interview. This was a face-to-face with Merelda Sterling, founder and owner of Manor House Productions. Legendary in the television industry, and rumored to be terrifying.

Shaky hands smoothed back her blonde ponytail, ensuring no stray tendrils had escaped in the Seattle springtime breeze. Landing a position as Assistant Producer at the distinguished boutique production company would be the next step in her five-year career plan.

A chalkboard sign outside The Coffee Pod invited customers to “Come in and try the worst coffee that one woman on TripAdvisor ever had.” Chuckling, she pushed open the door. What the heck? She had time. If today went well, this might become her regular stop on her way to work.

The sharp tang of ground coffee beans filled the warm air inside, and the shrill whistle of the espresso machine steaming milk drowned out the chatter of conversation around her. Waiting for her order, she studied the mural of whales painted on the wall, a clever play on the name of the coffee shop.

“Medium latte,” The barista called out.

She grabbed the drink and took a cautious sip, mostly foam.

“For Nate,” the barista continued.

She froze mid-swallow. She had taken someone else’s beverage? How mortifying!

“I’m so sorry,” she said to the guy with tousled brown hair who stepped up to the counter, looking for his drink. “I took yours. I have an interview down the street, and I'm nervous.”

“Ah, you need it more than me then,” he said. His green eyes crinkled with laughter.

“Plus, I already drank from it.”

“Consider it yours.” He adjusted the motorcycle helmet in his grip. “Is your interview at Manor House Productions?”

“Yes. Do you work there?” Inside info would be a good thing.

“Mostly in their studio location across town. Nate.” He offered his hand. “Sound tech.”

“Lexy. Assistant Producer hopeful.” His hand clasped hers in a reassuring shake.

“Medium latte for Lexy,” the barista said.

Nate released her and reached for the coffee, flashing a grin as he covered her name with a paper sleeve. “If the guys see your name on my cup, they'll never call me anything else.”

“I really am sorry.”

“No problem. A word of advice regarding Merelda?”

“Happily.”

“Don’t let her intimidate you. That way, she'll respect you.”

“Easier said than done.”

“If you start to feel intimidated, picture her in those high heels she totters around on, trying to ride the S.L.U.T.”

“Excuse me?”

“The Seattle Lake Union Trolley. The S.L.U.T. Are you new to the city?”

“No,” she laughed. “You just caught me off guard.”

“See? You're already less nervous.”

She nodded. “I am. Thanks, Nate. If I get this job, I'll owe you a coffee.”

“I’ll hold you to that.”

It wasn’t until they’d parted ways that she realized Nate, ‘sound tech’, was also Nate Douglas, lead guitarist in the up-and- coming local band, The Rainy Day Astronauts. If she landed this job, not only was she one step closer to her goal, she’d be working with a celebrity.

Devil's in the Details by M.J. Schiller

Devil's in the Details
by M.J. Schiller

Blurb:

Callahan Murphey isn’t as good with women as his father is.

He has the gift of gab. I have the gift of calculus, and there’s only so far that’ll get you with women. And when Shona’s around? I become a complete blathering idiot. I’m hopeless.

Shona McDermott has gotten herself into a bit of trouble.

The kind of trouble that has me swearing off men. No matter how badly I want to break that rule for Cal.

But when Shona gets into hot water, only someone who is a devil for details will be able to get her out.

When love makes them both fools, is there any way for them to redeem themselves?

Excerpt:

It was Shona McDermott, of all people. We grew up together in Old Head. I’d always had a crush on her. The tears in her eyes spoke to her fury and frustration over the situation. “What are you doing here?” Simultaneously she asked, “What the hell are you doing here?” I pushed to my feet, brushing leaves and debris from my trousers. “I’m going to school.” She still lay on the ground, on her elbows, gawking at me. I offered my hand to help her to her feet, making sure my heels were dug in, so we didn’t take another tumble. Once standing, she began swiping at her clothes. “I take it you are, too.” I spotted something and scooped a binder out of the ivy and gave it to her. She took it from me. “Yeah. Yes. I am.” She clutched her belongings to her chest and avoided eye contact. The fact that she’d answered my question three times wasn’t lost on me. “Well, that’s deadly. It’s wonderful to see you.” It did my heart good. She lifted her gaze and gave me her first genuine smile. “Good to see you, too, Cal.” I wanted to prolong our interaction. I glanced up the hill, licking my lips. “Well, as you’re late for class anyway, why don’t you let me take you to lunch?” Noticing a pen near our feet, I bent to retrieve it. She scoffed, stooping to get a book to her left. “A bar maid and Patrick Byrne’s heir? That could be scandalous.” I grinned. “Is that a turn-off?” She exhaled. “On the contrary. That’s a plus.” Her focus danced over me, and I became warm despite the chilly weather. “No, wait.” She dropped her head. “I’m not doing this.” She almost seemed to be talking to herself. “I’m not doing this anymore. This isn’t who I am.” She cleared her throat. “I don’t know you. You could be a drug dealer for all I know.” I plucked another notebook from the muck. “A drug dealer? ’Ave you lost your mind? You know me. You know my family. You can trust me.” “I can’t be certain. It’s been nearly five years. Things can change in five years. Besides, you’re far too good-looking to be trusted.” “Well, thank you…I think…but aren’t you kind of throwin’ me in the stocks without so much as askin’ for evidence?” “Do you have evidence that you’re trustworthy?” “What? Well, no, but—” “I didn’t think so.” She snatched the spiral from me and scanned the ground. “Thank you for your help, but I have to go. I’m late for work.” And just like that, she marched downhill and made a beeline for the stairs. I stood, staring after her. The gal must be off her nut. There was a story there, to be sure. I shook my head, tromping back in the direction I’d come from, wiping at the dirt on my sleeve. I twisted to watch her disappear onto the road above.

Bullets and Dandelions by Gail Koger

It’s 1990, women snipers are unheard of & Tess Reynold’s mission In the Middle East just got complicated. She has a rogue CIA agent on her trail, and her life depends on trusting a hot, but infuriating Force Recon Marine.

Bullets and Dandelions

A Deputy Gemma Stone Prequel

by Gail Koger

Genre: Action, Comedy, Romance

My name is Tess Reynolds, and I’ll admit few people would think I’m a badass Army sniper called the Scorpion. Afterall, women snipers were unheard of in 1990. People look at me and see a petite blonde who is cute as a button. My father calls it my natural camouflage.

My time in the Middle East has been full of unforeseen complications. I have a rogue CIA agent trying to kill me and I caught the attention of a Force Recon Marine by the name of Alexander Stone. Wowzer! He’s hot but he’s also the biggest jackass I have ever met. To make things even more interesting, I need the Jackass’s help to stay alive.

This novella is the prequel to the Gemma Stone series. How it all began.

Pain and the need to pee woke me up. I sat up and looked around groggily. Where was I?

“What do you need?”

I stared up at Sergeant Stone. “Bathroom.”

Stone held out his hand. “I’ll show you the way.”

“Okay.” I took his hand and blinked in confusion. All I was wearing was a baggy green tee shirt. “Where are my pants?”

“They were covered in blood.”  He led me across a hallway and opened a door.

“Oh.” I frowned and pointed. “That’s a urinal.”

“Yes, it is.”

“Why are we in the men’s restrooms? I’m a girl.”

“That you are.” Grinning, Stone guided me over to a stall and opened the door. “In you go.”

“No peeking.” I shut the door.

“No, ma’am.”

I sat on the toilet and did my business. “Are you laughing at me?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Why are you ma’aming me?”

“Because you’re high on morphine and too damn cute.”

Was he being nice to me? No way. I pulled off some toilet paper and stared at it for a moment. “Well, stop it.”

 “Are you done, soldier?”

I wiped myself. “Yes.” I stood, flushed the toilet and pulled up my panties. Wait a minute. These weren’t my panties.

“Open the door, Tess.”

I did as he asked. “These aren’t my panties.” I yanked up my tee shirt. “See?”

His grin got bigger. “We got you fresh underwear.”

“Why?”

“Because your clothes were covered in blood.”

“Oh.” I sat on the floor. “Tired.” I laid down.

“No, you don’t.” Stone scooped me up. “You need to take your pills.”

“Don’t wanna.” I laid my head against his shoulder. “Promise you won’t let him kill me.”

“I promise.” Stone sat me on a bed. “Open your mouth.”

“What if I have bad breath?”

“You don’t.”

“You sure about that?”

“I am. Now take your pills.”

 I opened my mouth.

Stone dropped two pills on my tongue and handed me a bottle of water. “Swallow them and you can have some chocolate.”

“Okay.” I washed the pills down. “Where’s my chocolate?”

“In my backpack. I’ll get it.”

A wave of weariness rolled over me. The minute my head hit the pillow I fell asleep.

Excerpt:

“Hullo, kitty.” She obliged, picking him up and rubbing her cheek on his fur. “Mee? Seriously? That’s its name?”

Cam shook his head to clear it, but he should’ve cleared his throat because the words, “No, his—” came out in a croak. He did clear his throat then. “His name is Chairman Meow, but I call him Mee for short.”

“Chairman Meow. Clever.” She held the cat out to look into his unblinking green eyes. “Hello, Chairman Meow. How did you get that name?”

Inanely, Cam waited a few seconds, not really thinking the cat would answer, but having Harper show up at his door was a miracle, and he was certainly up for more. Finally, after she transferred her gaze to him, he said, “Joe and I found him on the River Walk a couple of winters ago—wet and shivering under one of the benches. I brought him home, dried him off, and gave him some scrambled eggs. Put an ad on the local lost-pet Facebook page, but nobody claimed him.”

“And Chairman Meow?” She wandered farther into the workshop with a limp Mee lying on her shoulder like a furry scarf.

“Ah, that was all my brother Joe. When Mee was a kitten, his head was so round and seemed way too big for his body. Have you seen pictures of Mao Tse-tung?”

She frowned. “If I have, I don’t remember.”

“Round face. Plump cheeks, plus that cat took over my house like a little general.” He chuckled. “Couple of days after I got him, we were drinking hot buttered rum and tossing out names for the poor thing who was glaring at us like we were the enemy, and Joe mentioned he looked like Mao … so Chairman Meow.”
“Ah, okay.” She gave the cat a final stroke and set him back on the concrete floor. “I like it.”
