MY VOYAGER

By Lyn Horner

Don't miss the giveaway at the end of the post!

INSPIRATION and RESEARCH

I was inspired to write MY VOYAGER by a writing class project and my desire to set a romance in Galveston at the height of the island’s glory, before the devastating hurricane of 1900. I thought what fun I’d have pairing a proper Victorian woman with a bedraggled man who falls out of thin air dressed like a pirate. Including a precocious child would make it even more fun.

While researching the 1890s era, I grew fascinated by the historic Tremont House, a grand hotel now in its third incarnation. In its heyday, the second hotel of that name hosted presidents and celebrities. It’s the main setting for MY VOYAGER and inspired me to turn this into a series of Old West hotel romances titled Legendary Rendezvous. I’m working on book two, which features the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, said to be the most haunted hotel in Texas.

Imagine a 17th Century buccaneer's thunderstruck reaction to "modern" marvels such as streetcars and horseless carriages. Experience his shock when he sees a steamship with no sails that runs as if by magic.

Swept forward in time by divine power to 1895 Galveston, Raphael Marquez is on a quest to retrieve the sacred relic he stole and return it to its rightful place. If he fails, his soul will be doomed to the firest of hell. The death of his wife and daughter at the hands of ruthless pirtes has left him bereft and vengeful.

Victorian widow Julia Reynolds and her young daughter, Livvy, accompany Julia's wealthy father on a trip to Galveston. They stay in the opulent Tremont House, a legendary landmark. Since being lied to and cheated on by her deceased husband, Julia distrusts men and is not looking for love. Yet, when a strange looking, injured fellow falls practically at her feet in the hotel lobby, she takes pity on him.

Raphael is enchanted by Livvy, who reminds him of his lost little girl. Her beautiful, kind-hearted mother also wends her way into his tattered heart. Attraction grows on both sides, but Raphael's deception as he pursues his mission, and Julia's unexpected connection to it stand in their way. A rare, historic Valentine's Day blizzard brings high drama.

Julia may hold the key to Raphael's redemption, but can she forgive his lies?

Galveston, Texas; February 1895

Julia Reynolds stepped out of the Tremont House’s steam-powered elevator, clutching her six-year-old daughter Olivia’s small hand and her own fragile composure. Heels clicking on the hotel lobby’s marble floor, she pasted a smile on her face and tried not to think about the letter she’d received a short while ago.

“Mama, you’re hurting my hand,” Livvy complained.

“Oh, I’m sorry, sweetie.” Julia immediately loosened her grip. “I didn’t mean to squeeze so tight. Is this better?”

“Uh-huh. Can we go to the ice cream parlor after the doctor? Please.”

“Yes, if you’re a good girl for Doctor Harmon.”

“I’ll try, but I hate when he puts that stick in my mouth. It almost makes me throw up.”

“I know, honey, but he needs to hold your tongue down so he can look at your throat. Remember how sore it was the last time we saw him? We want him to make sure it’s all better now.”

“But it doesn’t hurt anymore. He doesn’t have to –” Livvy shrieked just as a thud and a cry of pain sounded nearby, off to their right. “Mama, that man fell out of the air!”

Julia pivoted and gasped at the sight of a man lying curled on the marble floor several feet away. He wore strange clothes and his face was hidden by long, tangled black hair. And he was sopping wet.

“Stop pointing at him, Livvy. That’s not nice,” she said absently. After a pause she asked, “Mister, are you hurt? Do you need help?”

Through a pain-filled haze, Raphael realized the female voice was speaking to him. Groaning, he struggled to sit up, holding his sagging left arm against his chest. He raked hair from his eyes and lifted his aching head. Brilliant light stung his eyes, making him blink fast as he struggled to see. When he was able to focus on the strange woman and girl staring at him, he returned their stares, struck by the woman’s odd attire.

She wore a narrow, bell-shaped gray skirt and short black velvet coat belted in at her slender waist and flaring over her nicely rounded hips. The coat sleeves were hugely puffed from shoulder to elbow and tight from elbow to wrist. A high-necked white bodice showed at her throat. These garments were nothing like the women’s gowns he was familiar with.

She was quite lovely, he also noticed, with upswept blonde hair and a tiny hat perched above her heart-shaped face and wide blue eyes.

Then his gaze swung to the little girl. Dressed in a sky-blue coat over a frilly frock, white stockings and shiny black shoes, she was blonde like the woman – her mother, Raphael assumed. She was also very pretty like her madre, with long, bouncing curls, pink cheeks, and a rosebud mouth, open in an “O” of astonishment.

She made him think of his own small daughter, lost to him along with her mother, his dear Louisa, murdered by MacKenzie and his bloodthirsty pirates. His throat tightened at the memory.

“Do you need help?” the woman repeated. When he didn’t answer, because he did not trust himself to speak, she crossed her arms beneath high breasts and frowned impatiently. “Do you not understand English, sir?”

“I speak your language,” Raphael said, voice raspy from emotion and sea water. In truth, he found her accent as odd as her appearance. It sounded nothing like the English he had learned as a child while living in his mother’s homeland. “I do not need your assistance,” he added, levering himself onto his knees and pushing to his feet. He swayed but managed to remain upright, again cradling his arm.

She eyed him critically. “Then I suggest you go to your room, or wherever you came from and change into dry – less bizarre garb. Come along, Livvy, let’s go or we will be late for our appointment.”

While Raphael glanced down at his wet shirt and breeches, the child – Livvy – resisted her mother’s effort to draw her away. “But how did he do that, Mama?”

“Do what?” the woman asked, forcefully dragging her inquisitive offspring away from Raphael.

“How did he fall out of the air?”

“Don’t talk nonsense. The man tripped over his own feet and landed hard, that’s all. Alcohol does that to a person.”

She believed him drunk, Raphael realized, offended. He wanted to storm after her and deny her false assumption, but his head and shoulder throbbed unmercifully, and he was still somewhat unstable on his feet. He watched her and the child walk toward a set of heavy doors that evidently led outside. Only then did he pay attention to his surroundings.

The large space was brightly lighted by peculiar devices hanging on the walls and from the ceiling. They held no candles that he could see. Turning in a slow circle, he gaped at the opulent room. Obviously the antechamber of a prestigious residence, it was lavishly appointed with marble, dark polished wood and potted palms. A sweeping staircase climbed to a curved balcony that must lead to inner rooms.

He also noticed several people standing around, staring at him. A middle-aged couple eyed him in disapproval and crossed the room to a tall mahogany desk. Behind it stood a soberly clad man, el portero – the concierge – Raphael deduced.

Like Livvy’s mother, everyone Raphael saw wore outlandish attire, increasing his suspicion that he had landed in some strange, unknown land. Dios! He could not believe the whirlwind had carried him aloft and set him down in one piece, much less in such a place. How could this be?

“It is so because the Madonna wishes it this way, you dolt,” he muttered. She had sent him here, causing him to “fall out of the air” as young Livvy said. Thinking of her, he heard her high-pitched voice and wheeled toward the outer doors, growing dizzy with the sudden movement. He stumbled, nearly falling, and gasped as fresh pain shot down his arm. Clasping it to his body, he managed to regain his balance.

“See, Mama? He hurt his arm. We have to help him,” Livvy declared, tugging her mother’s skirt, attempting to lead her toward Raphael.

Lips set in a thin line, the woman walked back to him. “Sir, my daughter is correct, you are clearly injured. I will call for a doctor. Meanwhile, you need to get out of those wet clothes and lie down. Are you staying here at the hotel?”

Raphael opened his mouth to say no but realized she would insist on knowing where he was staying. Before he could concoct a reply, el portero marched up. “I am so sorry if this man has offended you, Mrs. Reynolds.”

The scowling fellow looked Raphael up and down. “Mister, I don’t know what happened to you, but you cannot stand here dripping in the lobby. Are you a guest of the Tremont House?”

In a quandary, Raphael stammered the only thing that came to mind. “I-I do not know. That is, I do not remember.”

“You don’t remember!” Mrs. Reynolds exclaimed. “I suppose you don’t remember how you got here or why you’re all wet either, hmm?”

“I am sorry, I do not.”

“I know how you got here,” Livvy blurted. “You fell out of the air.”

“Livvy, stop saying that,” her mother reprimanded. To him she said in a caustic tone, “Are you asking me, I mean us – she gestured at the hotel man – to believe you have amnesia?”

He frowned. “I do not know this word. What does it mean?”

“It means to lose your memory.”

“Ah, I see. Perhaps I do suffer from this amnesia.”

She studied him closely, one hand on her hip, the other wrapped around Livvy’s small hand. “Did you hit your head when you fell?”

Raphael knew it was possible to lose one’s memory after a blow to the head, and so did she, it appeared. He touched a tender spot on the back of his head. “I must have. It aches,” he said, wincing involuntarily. His fingers came away coated with blood.

She sighed. “Well, I supposed Doctor Harmon can determine if you are being truthful. For now, let’s get you a room.”

“Wait a moment. He can’t stay here looking like that,” el portero protested, shaking his hand at Raphael. “Our guests would be scandalized.”

“Of course, Mister Bagly, exactly why you must see him to a room right now and find some decent clothes for him to wear. While you do so, I shall call Doctor Harmon and ask him to come and tend the man’s injuries.”

“B-but, Mrs. Reynolds, I really cannot –”

“Need I remind you who my father is, sir?” the lovely Mrs. Reynolds asked with an imperious lift of her chin.

Bagly’s narrow jaw tightened. His thin brown mustache twitched. “No, Madam, I know who he is.” He stiffly bowed his head to her. “I will show the gentleman to a room immediately.”

“Excellent.” Raphael’s benefactress smiled and turned to him. “Bagly will take care of you, Mister . . .” She laughed. “Goodness, I don’t even know your name.”

“Uh, I don’t –”

She waved him to silence. “I know, I know, you don’t remember it, correct?” She cocked a slim dark blonde eyebrow.

He shook his pounding head and stared uncomfortably at the floor. He had trapped himself in a lie, a position he might live to regret.

BEGUILING DELILAH Excerpt
Leon thrust open the door to Delilah’s outer office and charged in. He tossed Esme a quick greeting as he strode to the inner door. She replied but didn’t try to stop him when he once again entered Delilah’s private office unannounced. He found her standing at a small open closet tucked in beside the wet bar in the corner.
“We must leave. Now,” he said the moment she turned to look at him. “The Hellhounds have come. They were at your condo asking for you.”
Her eyes widened. “How do you know it was them?”
“I know because at least one had a gun. Come, we must go. They might be on their way here right now.”
She made a choked sound, grabbed her coat from the closet and stuffed her arms into the sleeves. Snatching her handbag off her desk, she rushed over to him, breathing fast. Leon gripped her elbow and turned toward the door he’d left partway open. At that moment, a man’s voice sounded from the outer office. He spoke in French. Leon didn’t understand the words but caught his threatening tone.
Esme screamed and Delilah cried out, clutching Leon’s arm. Then her inner door was shoved open, banging against the wall. Three men barged in. Determined to protect Delilah, Leon circled his arm around her, slipping his other hand into his jacket pocket at the same time.
The shortest of the three, who had asked for Delilah at her condo, was apparently the leader. An ugly lantern-jawed tough, he reached under his coat and pulled out an automatic. Pointing it at Leon, he growled something in French.
“I do not understand your words,” Leon said mildly, “but I have no gun if that is what worries you.”
“Oh yes? Then show what you do have,” the man ordered in thickly accented English, indicating the hand Leon had stuffed in his pocket.
He nodded and obeyed. Extending his fisted hand, he uncurled his fingers to reveal a small pile of fine, dark powder lying on his palm. “This is only a calming medicine I sometimes use.”
Laughing, the Frenchman sneered, “You need calming now, eh, old man?” He waved his weapon at Delilah, causing her to gasp. “Release the woman. She is to come with us.”

Delilah trembled in fear. Would Leon meekly hand her over to the vile trio? Intending to resist, she tried to draw away from him, but his arm tightened like an iron band around her waist, holding her close. Seeing him bend his head, she thought he meant to inhale the calming powder but, instead, he blew it into the men’s faces.
The three inhaled sharply, choked, coughed and screwed their eyes shut. “What the hell?” The leader demanded in a strangled voice. Trying to blink the dust from his eyes, obviously unable to see, he waved his gun back and forth.
Delilah shrieked, certain he was about to shoot both Leon and her. But he didn’t get the chance. Clutching her arm, Leon hurried her past the blinded men and out the open door. She spotted Esme crouched on the floor behind her desk. Resisting Leon’s tug on her arm, she shouted, “Don’t cower there like a frightened rabbit, Esme. Come! We must escape!”
White with fear, the trembling girl rose and followed them. As the elevator doors opened, Delilah heard the three villains stumbling from her office, shouting furiously. Heart hammering, she dashed into the elevator with her companions and sagged in relief against the wall when the doors closed. Esme huddled in the corner, crying and shaking.
Leon laid his hand on the girl’s shoulder. “Calm down and look at me,” he said, drawing her tearful gaze. “When we reach ground floor, Delilah and I must run. But you should go to the security desk and ask the guard to call the police. Will you do that?”
“Oui, M-Monsieur,” the girl stammered, swiping tears from her cheeks. “But what if those terrible men follow you?” Esme glanced anxiously at Delilah. “Can you protect Madame Moreau?”
“We must leave the city for a while, but do not worry. I will keep her safe.”

Review extract from Tome Tender Book Blog:

“BEGUILING DELILAH by Lyn Horner is more than a steamy romance of passion, it is a mature romance between two people who are old enough to have faced losses and experienced life. Imagine being in a race to the finish, the prize being your life, but having the level of life experiences to enjoy the moments of obscurity when they come. Feel the beautiful countryside go by, sense the vastness of the Eiffel Tower and chuckle at the ways of a man who is used to living within his own world and having the traditional roles in a relationship.

Lyn Horner brings another Guardian into the game and creates the maze she must survive with her own personal “guardian” by her side! Passion knows no age, and great writing knows no limits!”

INTERVIEW WITH LYN HORNER -- TOUCHING CHARLOTTE

One of the fun parts of having a blog is that I get to introduce readers to my friends. Lyn Horner and I met about fifteen years ago at a Romance Writers of America local chapter in the Fort Worth-Mid Cities area. We have been friends ever since. Lyn has agreed to let me grill her here. I’ve read both her series and have to admit this new one is my favorite. I look forward to each book.

Please tell us about growing up, Lyn. Share anything that lets readers get to know the real you.

Caroline, Let me first thank you for inviting me back. Visiting you is always a pleasure.

As for my childhood, I was an only child, born in San Francisco but raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A bit of a tomboy as a youngster, I became a bookworm in my teens. I was shy around boys and didn’t date until my senior year of high school, when a girlfriend goaded me into inviting a classmate to the Sweetheart Swirl, a girl-ask-boy dance that culminated our school’s Sadie Hawkins Days. After the dance, my date, Ken, invited me to the senior prom. Four years later, we married. We have two grown children, a boy and a girl, and nine grandkids – two biological, four by marriage, and three adopted. Our family is a messy, joyous melting pot!

Ken and Lynda

Aren’t you glad you invited Ken to that dance? Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

Diana Gabaldon is my favorite author. I never tire of reading and now watching her Outlander series. Of course there are many other authors I admire, including you, my friend. Western historical and Scottish romance, as well as certain types of paranormal are my favorite genres. Lately I’ve also come to enjoy the mysteries of Faye Kellerman.

When you’re not writing, what’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?

I enjoy reading, gardening and watching good movies. Oh, and cuddling my three furry babies. Err, cats that is. Naturally, I also love cuddling my youngest grandbabies.

Jax, Emerson, and Kira
December 2015

I have three cats, too. Alas, no grandchildren. How long have you been writing?

A long time! Some thirty years ago we moved from Minneapolis, our home town, to Chicago. Giving up my career in the visual arts, I stayed home to raise our kiddos, the youngest of whom was still in diapers. To keep from going bonkers, I took up writing, soon finding that I enjoyed historical research and crafting a passionate romance. Still, my new love remained only a hobby until years later, after two more transfers brought us to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Following many false starts, I finally published my first book in 2010.

We were both late bloomers to publishing, weren’t we? My first book was published in 1998. Where do you prefer to write?

When I’m actually writing, not keeping up with social media and marketing my books, I prefer to shut myself in our bedroom with my laptop, story outline and notes. Sometime I’ll tune in a music station on TV, one with instrumental tracks, especially Irish or Native American flute melodies.

I listen to instrumental music also. Are you a plotter or a panzer?

I’m a plotter except for the first two or three chapters of a new book. I like to get acquainted with my imaginary people in that opening section before plotting their path.

Do you do your research before you begin a new project, or as you go along?

I do basic research about the setting before I start a project, but hunt up details as I go. Often, I don’t know what details I need until reaching specific points in the story.

Tell us about your writing schedule. Do you set goals? Do you write daily?

LOL I don’t have a set schedule unless you count sitting down and opening my laptop immediately after feeding the cats their breakfast and grabbing my first cup of coffee in the morning. Barring errands or interruptions, most of my day and part of the night is spent typing. Not all on writing, of course. Social media, blogging and answering email messages take up a fairly large chunk of my time.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise readers.

Hmm, let me think. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream. In fact I’m addicted to it. J

Chocolate and ice cream—always a good combination! What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

In each of my books, I try to lead readers on an exciting adventure and immerse them in a passionate, highly emotional romance. Additionally, I hope to leave them wondering if the psychic gifts my characters possess might really be possible.

And we both know they are, don’t we? What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

First, learn your craft. Join a writers group, attend workshops, listen to advice from experienced authors and, if possible, join a critique group.

Second, in order to build name recognition before you publish, establish a presence on Twitter, Facebook and other social media. Also consider starting a blog where you post about interesting, helpful topics. You might offer to host guest bloggers and/or conduct interviews as Caroline is doing for me.

Third, be patient and persistent. Don’t expect fame and fortune overnight, and don’t give up on your dream if it takes a while to come true.

Excellent advice, Lyn. Tell us about TOUCHING CHARLOTTE.

My latest release is TOUCHING CHARLOTTE, Romancing the Guardians, book four. Combining romantic suspense with paranormal elements, the series carries readers from Ireland to Texas, to other far-flung locations. This book is set mainly in New York City and Long Island’s gold coast (Great Gatsby country.) NYC cop turned celebrity chef Tristan Jameson meets empathic nurse Charlotte Dixon, who can’t stand to be touched. Teaching her the right man’s touch can bring joy instead of pain is Tristan’s goal. At first, he makes progress, but frightening surprises await. Please be aware this is an adult romance.

TOUCHING CHARLOTTE Excerpt:

He rested his hands on his hips, studying her. “Have you ever been touched by a man and actually found it pleasant?”
She blinked, pivoted partially away and hugged herself. “No, but there was a boy once,” she said softly. “We were ten years old, in the same grade at school. He was sweet and his touch never hurt. Then his father caught us holding hands and yanked Robbie – his name was Robbie – away from me. He called me bad names and told me never to come near his son again or he’d make me sorry.”
Tristan swore, wishing he could make the man sorry for frightening a young girl. “Why did his father not want him near you?”
She laughed bitterly. “He thought I was touched in the head or maybe a witch, like most of the townspeople believed.”
“Because of your gift?”
Char faced him, rubbing her arms. “Yes. My mother made me wear long sleeved clothes to school no matter how hot it was. She told me to avoid touching others as much as possible and not to let on if I felt things. But I picked up flashes of emotion constantly and being just a kid, I couldn’t control my reactions. Sometimes I’d start laughing or crying for no apparent reason in the middle of class. When I babbled about what some boy or girl was feeling, he or she would want to kill me and the teacher would send me down to the office, again.” She sighed. “Being different was a curse.”
“I can see that. And since Robbie, there’s been no boy, no man in your life?”
Her eyes fled his. She shook her head, auburn hair swinging back and forth. “I can’t let anyone close.”
“You’re willing to shut yourself away, always afraid to touch and be touched? To love and be loved? You’re a sweet, kind person, Char. It’s not fair for you to have to live like that.”
She stiffened and he could almost see a curtain drop over her features. Fisting her hands at her sides, she stared past his shoulder. “It’s the only way I know to survive without being crushed by the pain of someone else’s emotions. I didn’t choose this kind of life. It chose me and nothing can change that. I’ve accepted it.”
She lifted her chin, shoulders thrown back. “Thank you for showing Marilee a good time today, but now you need to go.”
He’d pushed her too hard. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to criticize you.” He retrieved his coat from the chair where he’d tossed it and shoved his arms into the sleeves. Not bothering to button it, he strode past her into the hall. Halting, he drew a deep breath. He refused to leave her like this. She deserved better. Turning, he said, “I hope you’ll let me see you again. I’d like a chance to show what pleasure the right person’s touch can give you. At least allow me to be your friend.”
She hugged herself again, watching him. “Just go. Please,” she said, smoky voice tight with emotion. Was it regret?

CAPTURING GABRIEL IS A PARANORMAL ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

Capturing Gabriel is book three in Lyn Horner’s Romancing the Guardians series. Staged mainly in the mountains of Colombia, this book is a modern-day western South American style. Spiced with steamy romance, the story stars a leading man with a surprising Superhero power.

Review Excerpt:
“Capturing Gabriel by Lyn Horner is part romance, part action, part paranormal and 100% entertainment as she creates a hard scrabble world and brings two souls together at a most inconvenient time! …Definitely not heavy or dark reading, this has heat, tension and a great author behind a wonderful plot!” --Dianne Bylo, Amazon Top 500 Reviewer

CAPTURING GABRIEL Blurb:
What’s a handsome Colombian psychic with super-hero-power to do with a spirited Navajo beauty who invades his territory? Why, kidnap her of course.

Chopper pilot Josie Tseda served in Afghanistan. She can take care of herself. But when she vows to find Gabriel Valdez, a Guardian of Danu, and deliver him to a gathering of Guardians, she’s in for a rough ride. She didn’t count on ending up his prisoner – or on falling for him.

Battling vicious drug lords and seeking revenge for his mother’s murder, Gabriel doesn’t trust the feisty American female who wants to fly him off to the U.S. Yet, he can’t help wanting her. Will he allow her to capture his heart or will the secret power he wields ultimately drive her away?

CAPTURING GABRIEL Excerpt:

“What are you doing?”

“Is it not obvious? I am releasing you.” He didn’t bother looking up as he spoke. Finished freeing her numb left foot, he walked around the mule and untied her right foot then reached to free her hands.

“Now what?” she asked as the last rope fell away.

His lips crooked into a half-smile. “Now you step down, Señorita Tseda.”

Josie frowned. “I can’t. My hands and feet are numb from being tied so tight.”

He glowered at Javier, who sat silently observing, and reprimanded him for binding her too tightly. The other man lowered his head and muttered a reply.

Valdez turned his attention back to Josie. “Javier should have been careful not to cut off your circulation. Perhaps if you had not fought so hard –”

“Hey! You’d fight too, if somebody tried to hogtie you.”

Arching black eyebrows, he said, “I do not know this hogtie and I think I do not wish to know. Come down now. I will help you.” He grasped her by the waist and lifted her off the mule, trying to be gentle, she could tell, but even so she uttered a strangled cry and collapsed against him. Her feet and hands tingled painfully with the returning flow of blood, but what really hurt was the raw flesh along her inner thighs and private places. Pride was the only thing that prevented her from whimpering like a child.

Valdez scooped her up, drawing a surprised gasp from her lips. He issued an order to his men and they dismounted while he carried her to a spot at the side of the trail. Pausing, he called to Berto and added a few curt words. A moment later the young man trotted over with a folded blanket and laid it on the ground where his boss indicated.

Josie didn’t know exactly when her arms had circled Valdez’s neck, but she was very aware of his male scent and the hard wall of his chest against her side. When he lowered her onto the blanket, she experienced a sense of loss as he separated from her.

Crazy woman! He’s an arrogant bully who kidnapped you. You can’t let yourself feel anything but anger toward him.

He stood and walked to his horse, returning shortly with a canteen. Uncapping it, he bent and handed it to her. She nodded, disturbed by her unwanted reaction to him and unable to speak. Leaving her to rest and drink her fill, he sauntered over to the other men, several of whom had taken the opportunity to sprawl in the shade.

Covertly watching him from beneath the screen of her lashes, Josie couldn’t help admiring his tall, sinewy build and fluid grace. He sat near Javier and Berto, leaning against the trunk of a convenient palm tree with his long legs crossed at the ankles. Removing his hat, he raked a hand through his rumpled black hair and replaced the hat. He carried on a casual conversation in Spanish with his companions and laughed at some comment from Javier that made Berto scowl and turn red, plainly embarrassed.

Javier slung his burly arm around the young man’s head, knocking his hat off, and ruffled his hair. At that point, Josie noticed a resemblance between the two and it dawned on her that they were likely father and son. She might have seen it before if she hadn’t been so wrapped up in her alarming situation . . . and in ogling their leader, she admitted.

Valdez only allowed them a few minutes’ rest. As the men mounted up, he strode over to where she sat. Wondering how she was going to survive the rest of the day in the saddle, she struggled to her feet and bent stiffly to retrieve the blanket.

“Let me have that,” Valdez said, taking the blanket from her. “Come, I will make you as comfortable as possible.” He held out his hand and waited for her to take it. When she hesitantly placed her much smaller hand in his, he didn’t lead her to the mule, her beast of torture. Instead, he steered her toward his sleek bay gelding, which looked to be at least sixteen hands high.

“Wait, I can’t ride him,” Josie said, hanging back, trying to tug her hand free. “He’s too tall.”

Chuckling, he refused to let go. “Do not worry, señorita, I will not let you fall off Cezar’s back.”

“What? Are you saying I’m to ride with you?” She shook her head in disbelief.

“That is precisely what I am saying. It will be far more comfortable for you than bumping along on that wretched creature.” He tilted his head toward the mule. “Do you not think so?”

“No! I don’t think any such thing. I’m not riding with you.” She tossed her head indignantly and stuck out her hand. “Give me the blanket. I’ll pad my saddle with it and I’ll be fine.”

A muscle ticked along his square jaw. “You are stubborn and full of pride, but you will not win this battle, chiquita.”

REVIEW OF LYN HORNER'S DECODING MICHAELA

Don’t you love a good series? I love writing and reading series, and am excited when I read a book I like and learn that it's part of a series. Lyn Horner’s Romancing the Guardians series is shaping up to be great.

DECODING MICHAELA, book two, follows RESCUING LARA, book one. While each book can stand alone, I recommend you start with book one to get the full impact of the danger and myths involved.

Cover by Kim Killion
Lara Spenser/Flewellyn has been rescued by Conn O’Shea and is safely (for now) secreted away. Dev Medina carries on with the next phase of alerting the Guardians of impending assassination unless they take defensive measures and flea into hiding. Dev has decoded a message from Lara’s late uncle and learned the location of each Guardian. Now Dev's mission is to find Dr. Michael Peterson in Galveston and get the doctor to safety.

Turns out Lara is one of seven Celtic Guardians of ancient relics they have sworn to protect with their lives. Too bad that now their mission has become serious. Someone or something has learned of the relics and is intent on retrieving each Guardian's treasure. No, not gold, but another kind of treasure, one of power. A more dangerous kind.

Since he met Lara, Dev has been having dreams of a golden girl walking toward him across equally golden sand. He goes to Galveston beach, hoping he’ll see the girl who’s haunted him. Sure enough, he sees her coming toward him as she appeared in his dreams. Problem is, she passes by him and appears to be with another man.

Vowing to learn more about her, he realizes he must first warn the doctor. What a shock to learn that the person he’s been sent to rescue is the woman from his dreams. Dev made one little mistake in decoding—Michael is Michaela.

Michaela is a dedicated psychiatrist who has a particular psychic gift—she can read thoughts. She refuses to abandon her patients to another doctor. That is, until she is threatened and realizes Dev was telling her the truth. But I’ll let you learn more from DECODING MICHAELA rather than give spoilers.

I give this book 5 stars and I’m looking forward to the next in the series. The author slipped and let me know that Josie is the next person to rescue one of the Guardians. Yay! That's who I hoped the next book would feature. I hope Lyn Horner is writing rapidly as you read this!

Injured in a car wreck that killed her beloved uncle, she is desperate for someone to act as her bodyguard.

Enter Connor O’Shea, ex-Special Forces soldier. Now the foreman for a crew of oil and gas well firefighters, Conn is on an extended vacation after a devastating explosion on his last job. Out of curiosity, he answers Lara’s ad for a “strong chauffeur” and takes on the job of guarding her temporarily.
