A CUNNING PLAN BY ASTRID ARDITI #CunningTour

Astrid Arditi was born from a French father and Swedish mother. She lived in Paris and Rome before moving to London with her husband and daughter back in 2013.

After dabbling in journalism, interning at Glamour magazine, and teaching kindergarten, Arditi returned to her first love: writing.

She now splits her time between raising her kids (a brand new baby boy just joined the family) and making up stories.

A Cunning Plan is Arditi’s first published work.

Astrid Arditi has been kind enough to give an interview so readers can learn more about her:

Where did you grow up ? Siblings ? Locale ? Were you considered a « bookworm » or a jock ? Married, single ? Children ?

I grew up in Paris. My dad is French and my mom is Swedish. I have three siblings, one half sister seven years older than me and a younger sister and brother. We were all born one year apart. Courageous mom !

Although I hung out with the jocks, I was incredibly shy and insecure. I was a bookworm at heart, spending hours lost in Barbra Cartland’s novels but the cool crew allowed me to trail them around. My so-called “girlfriends” loved to make fun of me and take me down. My teens were fairly lonely.

I’ve been married for three years now and have an almost three-year-old tsunami of a daughter (barely made it into my wedding dress, just couldn’t wait to become a mother) and a sweet, contemplative baby boy. We moved to Brooklyn earlier this summer.

Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

My all time favorite author is Stefan Zweig, particularly his short stories and biographies. In romance, I’m a die-hard fan of Janet Evanovich. I also love Helen Fielding and her Bridget Jones.

What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge? Hobbies?

Anything that doesn’t include my kids these days (Although I’m incredibly grateful for them). Reading or hanging out with friends, eating cakes.

Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” Oscar Wilde

How long have you been writing?

Pretty much all my life, but with a professional intent for the past 6 years, which is when I met my husband. He believed in my talent when I wasn’t ready to do it for myself.

Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?

I write in cafes. First because my kids aren’t there, and second because I love being surrounded with life as I write. Snippets of conversation, heads huddled together as if sharing a secret, any ordinary detail can inspire me. I also need to concentrate that much harder to keep the ambient noise out whereas at home I get distracted way too easily. My laptop follows me everywhere although I’m very much a pen and paper gal. I only write with my special pens, pink, turquoise, purple and blue, just like I did in high school

Are you a plotter or a panzer?

A bit of both I think. I need an outline and a strong sense of direction before I can begin to write but then I love it when my characters surprise me and I’m always willing to let them take a detour.

Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?

My work is mostly fiction but Claudia, my heroine’s best friend was strongly inspired by my old housekeeper. She worked for me when my daughter was born and I was feeling lonely in London. We became close friends till she disappeared one day. I was thrilled when she contacted me again the day of A Cunning Plan’s publication. Best launch gift!

Do you set daily writing goals? Word count? Number of chapters? Do you get a chance to write every day?

I try to write every day but with young kids it’s not always possible. I usually write for two to three hours per day – about 1,500 words.

What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

I hope I can inspire women to reach their full potential. Sloane may appear impossibly weak and submissive at first, almost unbelievably so, but I do know many women who take an incredible amount of abuse because of their insecurities.
I’m also simply hoping to give people a good time because sometimes you just need to laugh.

What long-term plans do you have for your career?

I foresee many more adventures for Sloane and Ethan. I’d also love to write YA fantasy some day, when my kids are old enough to read my novels.

Would you like to tell us what you’re working on now?

Book 2 in the Sloane Harper series, A Cunning Heist.

What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

Don’t let your insecurities get the best of you. If you want to be an author, nothing’s stopping you. Write then write some more so you can hone your skill, for yourself first and foremost.

There are so many opportunities for authors nowadays… A shiny publishing deal isn’t the only way to share your words with the world.

A fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you.

I have a fish phobia. Started when I was about ten. Give me the choice between a pool with a gold fish and one with a shark and I’ll always choose the latter.

Something about you that would surprise or shock readers.

My first language is French. I only truly learned English in my early twenties.

A Cunning Plan is book one in the Sloane Harper series. I have no set number of books in mind although I believe every good thing must have an end. I’ll keep writing this series as long as Sloane keeps me entertained and impatient to know what she plans next.

Can you give readers a blurb about A CUNNING PLAN?

Determined to put her family back together, Sloane Harper stalks her ex husband and his annoyingly stunning mistress, Kate. And she’s not the only one. Handsome IRS agent Ethan Cunning is surveying them too, but not for the same reasons. He is attempting to nail Kate’s playboy boss.

Ethan and Sloane decide to help each other, which sends Sloane’s wobbly life spinning out of control. She’ll have to face danger, humiliation, and scariest of all, the dating scene, to lure her daughters’ father home.

Losing control was the best thing to happen to Sloane… until it turned lethal.

How about an excerpt from A CUNNING PLAN:

So far, I have spent more than ten hours this week parked on the exact same street, in front of the exact same building, staking out my husband’s mistress. To be exact, Tom was my ex-husband now, but I was pretty sure he was still my husband when Katherine Stappleton started screwing him.

A sideways glance confirmed Claudia’s eyelids had finally closed, and I sighed in relief. If I had to listen to one more minute of heavy metal, I would hurl myself or my housekeeper extraordinaire out of the car window.

I shot my hand toward the Mini Austin’s radio. But just as the angry voices faded in favor of a monotonous radio show, Claudia’s hand lashed out and slapped my wrist away.

“Go back. I love that song.”

“But I don’t understand Polish,” I said with a pout.

“It’s music, you don’t need to understand it,” she countered, her eyes still closed.

My teeth hurt from the loud screeching she called music. I considered looking for Magic FM again, but Claudia read my mind first. She snapped open one fierce blue eye.

“Don’t,” she warned.

Heavy metal music wasn’t nearly bad enough to risk incurring Claudia’s wrath and chancing her leaving. Listening to any kind of music with her definitely beat sitting in the car alone.

I gave a last, longing stare at the radio then turned my attention to the dashboard’s digital clock. It was 3:43 p.m. according to the flashing orange numbers. Sighing, I thought again of how much time I’d spent here.

The details of my husband’s ‘infidelity’ mattered; they changed the way one perceived things. On one side, you had my ex’s new girlfriend, and on the other, the tramp who stole my husband. Doesn’t have the same ring to it, right?

The same way if you asked Katherine Stappleton, she might have described my endeavor as ‘stalking’ rather than ‘staking out’. If she knew I was hiding in front of her work place, that is, and I was extremely careful not be noticed. Plus, I never left the car or followed her home -the definition of stalking. Legally speaking, I was in the clear. I’d checked on Yahoo Answers.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH TENA STETLER

Author Tena Stetler has agreed to give an interview so readers can get to know her better.

Where did you grow up? Siblings? Locale? Were you considered a “bookworm” or a jock?  Married, single?

I grew up in Colorado, an only child.  Afraid I was considered a wild child, with an overactive imagination.  I married the love of my life, many, many moons ago.

Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

I love Molly Harper. She writes werewolf and vampires with a snarky humor.  At least that’s what I call it.

I enjoy Nora Roberts paranormal stories and loved The Witness.  I thought it was something different for her.

Nancy Atherton.  She writes the Aunt Dimity series, 20 books and counting.  I have them all.

Tom Clancy

I read all different genres. All kinds of Romance, Mystery, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and a few thrillers that don’t give me nightmares.  LOL

What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?

Come warm weather, this year it was mid May.  We get out the fifth wheel trailer and go camping in various state and national parks.  Ok, sometimes we even visit friends.  We’ve traveled over three-quarters of the US with our dog, Mystic, parrot, Taco and box turtle, Sammie.  Hobbies? Used to fly remote controlled helicopters.  Crashing them gets expensive.

Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, WOW what a ride!"

How long have you been writing?

Most of my life.  I penned my first vampire romance as a tween. I expressed my overactive imagination in stories growing up, at least for the most part.  When I was downsized, again, this time from a job after 14 years, my husband suggested I polish and try to publish some of my novels. Nine months later, The Wild Rose Press contracted A Demon’s Witch, released September 2015, and the rest is exciting history.

Where do you prefer to write?
In my office, with my parrot in an adjoining room and our dog, running in and out making sure I don’t sneak away.  She used to be a latchkey puppy when I worked fulltime, but since I’m home, she does her darnest to keep track of me every minute. It’s a tough job.

Do you need quiet, music, solitude?

I like quiet when I’m writing, sometimes music when I’m editing.   PC or laptop? Both.  When the weather is too nice to be inside, I transfer my work to a thumb drive and take my laptop out in the sunroom or front porch.  Nothing better than writing while listening to the birds outside and keeping my parrot company and out of trouble, while she’s in the sunroom.  I like being mobile.

Are you a plotter or a panzer?

Definitely at panzer.  My books are character driven.  In fact my new release, A Witch’s Journey, is a prime example of my hero high jacking the plot and setting without permission.

Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?

Even though, I write paranormal romance, some of my characters are based on real events, and persons, then I add a magical twist.  Shhhhh… don’t tell anyone.  As a matter of fact, I had to laugh the other day when I went out with friends to a pizza place.  A friend that works there is aware, I’m writer.  When another girl got my order wrong and it had to be redone, my friend gave her a hard time and said. “Better watch out, she’ll put you in one of her books.”  The girl’s face turned red and she stared at me. “You wouldn’t really do that?”  I just couldn’t help myself, I said.  “You never know.” I took my pizza and giggled all the way to my seat at the girl’s look of astonishment.

Do you set daily writing goals? Word count? Number of chapters? Do you get a chance to write every day?

Yes, I write every day. In between laundry, cleaning house, yelling at the dog to stop barking at the squirrel, cooking meals and trying to keep the parrot from wreaking havoc while’s she’s outside her cage.  Some days are better than others, but I try to at least get 2500 words written. They don’t always make it into the book, but most do.

What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

For me crafting a romance is all about RESPECT, TRUST and LOVE. Only most of my characters are of the paranormal persuasion. I want to create a memorable love story with spice and adventure.  Characters that will grab hold of your heart and hang on long after you’ve read the last word and closed the book with a satisfied sigh.

What long-term plans do you have for your career?

As with most writers, I’ve love my books to make #1 on the New York Best Sellers List.  Maybe a movie or two.  I know those are lofty goals, but hey, if you don’t try, you’ll never succeed. Kinda like if you don’t ask, the answer is always no … but different.

Would you like to tell us what you’re working on now?

Of course. I love talking about my books.  I’m working on the second book in A Demon’s Witch series.  After reading the first one, A Demon’s Witch, I’ve had several people want to know what happened to Tristian, the assassin to the Demon Overlord of the Western Hemephere.  So hopefully in 2017, they’ll find out.   He wasn’t really a bad guy, just misunderstood.  There are two other books in the series as well.

What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

Never give up.  Write what you love.  Learn about your craft at workshops, conferences and other writers.

Share a fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you

I used to teach roller skating and competed in dance.

Share something about you that would surprise or shock readers.

I used to be a DeeJay at a popular rock and roll radio station.

Is your book a series?

A WITCH’S JOURNEY has a sequel due out over the holidays 2016.  I think that is the end, but I’m not sure.  Could be more.

Can you give readers a blurb about A WITCH'S JOURNEY?

Of course, I didn’t think you’d ever ask.

Pepper McKay comes from a long line of powerful witches. Unfortunately, magic brings her nothing but trouble. She learned the love of wildlife rescue and rehab from her Aunt Ashling. After graduating from college, Pepper works for Salem Wildlife Sanctuary and lives from paycheck to paycheck until she inherits the McKay property in Lobster Cove.  With the family land and resources, she dares to dream of starting her own wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center.
Lathen Quartz, a former Navy SEAL turned handyman maintains the enchanted McKay property for the estate. But someone is trying to steal the McKay magic. Lathen offers to help Pepper achieve her life-long dream of building a wildlife center. During the long hours spent together on the project, their mutual attraction can’t be denied.  But each harbors a deep, dark secret.  Will they overcome their demons and give love a chance?

How about an excerpt from A WITCH’S JOURNEY?

Sure, this is when she just arrived on the McKay Property:

Pepper hopped out of the truck and took a deep breath. The ocean breeze brought a mixed scent of brine, sand, sun and kelp. Seabirds whistled and screeched through the air diving into the white crested waves, proudly emerging with dinner. Turning her attention to the land, she noticed beyond the barn, the pond was still there, even a bit bigger than she remembered. Caught up in the smells, sights, and sounds, she didn't hear someone approach.
"Ms. McKay?"
"Sssshit," she yelped and whirled around to see a muscular man, well over six feet, with surfer blond hair nearly to his shoulders, tousled by the ocean breeze. Rounding the corner of the cabin, he waved at her as he approached walking with a slight limp. Deeply tanned, he appeared to spend a lot of time outdoors.
"I'm Lathen Quartz. Glad you made it before dark. The road up here can be treacherous after dark if you don't know where you're going.  I finished up the enclosed aviary and was getting ready to leave. But now that you're here, I'd be happy to show you around. Help you get settled."
"Pepper McKay, call me Pepper." Extending her hand towards him, she met his gaze. His large aquamarine eyes were mesmerizing, set above the high cheekbones, full lips and a butterscotch five o'clock shadow. She gave her head a shake. "Wait. You built an aviary?"
He shook her hand and smiled, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jeans and rocking back on his heels.

Tomasz Chrusciel had written his first short story when he was sixteen. Although the idea of being a writer had been put off for the next twenty years, he had never forgotten about his dreams. Having left his corporate work, he writes full-time now.

He loves to travel, and when he’s back from another journey, the next captivating story evolves in his mind. He strongly believes that the most rewarding feeling and the purpose of his writing is to let others experience those vibrant, wonderful countries he’s been too, and to introduce readers to new engaging characters born from his imagination and all those alluring locations. Then he makes that story real – it becomes a reader’s story.

FAST TRACK TO GLORY is his second full-length action and adventure novel.

HOW TO MARRY YOUR WIFE Excerpt:
“My lord, your castle awaits to the north and your relatives may be held captive. We must turn back.” The words were spoken by Harold-the-Younger who would be forgiven, just this once, for his impertinence.
“And my wife is missing. Thank you for stating the obvious. If you can’t be more helpful, I suggest your mouth be best used for taking in breath.”
Jacob pointed down the river. “There. What’s that?”
Thomas’ heart sank. A flat bottomed boat lay bobbing upside down against the bank of the river. A woman’s body lay beside it in a pool of blood. He swallowed hard and dug spurs into Demon’s side. His charger tossed his head, snorted, and veered, but Thomas gained control and raced toward the grisly scene.
A dog chewed at a headless mass of flesh and snarled. He kicked the animal away, squatted, and cursed. Pieces of Merry’s bloodied tunic twisted among the innards. He dropped to his knees and shouted with first raised into the air. “Be ye damned forever.” Part of the curse was for whoever had just killed her, the other for God, and lastly for himself.
Assessing the gore was the hardest thing he’d ever done. What was left of the flesh had the length and breadth of his wife. One arm was cleaved at the wrist. His soul refused to acknowledge the scene in front of his eyes and he refused to mourn. Not yet. He’d find the bastard who’d done this to her, cleave him in to small bits, and let the vultures feed.
A horse whinnied behind him and Jacob’s flat voice spoke, “The head is gone.”
“Let me be. I’ll bury her. Alone.” He gathered stones and placed them beside the body.
“It’s way too opportune that the poor woman’s head and hand are missing. I smell a ruse.”
The blackness that threatened to devour his soul wouldn’t let in one ray of hope. “Do as you will. I’ll bury what’s left of her.”
Thomas scoured the flood plain for a sign of her. Was it possible? Crows circled above, but other than that, the land lay bare. All signs and tracks around the body had been swept away. The coward was clever. About a mile beyond, a forest loomed. Perhaps the woman-slayer trembled there.
Having no shovel, but many a stone, Thomas moved the body parts to a central area and covered them. With none to watch, tears came unbidden as he placed the last round stone atop what was left of her body. He gasped for air, knowing not how to go on, but knowing he must for his little son.
“What say you, lass? You were right. Better that I should’ve stayed dead.”
Memories, detecting the flaw in his mail, attacked without mercy. Six years ago, he’d spied her across the room with the devil in her eyes. She’d smiled boldly at him and giggled with her friends. The first time they’d sat together at table, he’d fed her like a baby bird and cut her food. All in the great dining room watched, knowing that in the doing so he’d claimed her.
He recalled that fateful night, when they’d hand-fasted before God. She’d begged him to take her and he’d been too weak to resist completely. He’d promised to come back after trading in London and marry her. How was he to know that Marcus would send him abroad at the king’s request? His soul howled, never to be consoled again.
He sobbed, falling upon his knees, with his hands covering his face. Forgive me. He’d loved with her that night as much as he’d dared. So beautiful her lovely sighs, so bountiful her breasts. She’d opened her legs and accepted his hand until she’d come undone. Mayhap a holier man could have resisted her offerings, but oh no, not him. Nay. He took all but her virginity and remembered how sweet the agony to spew his seed between her legs.

He allowed one more moment of self-pity, planted the final rock upon her grave, and squeezed his eyes as they burned. He apologized for his blasphemy and prayed God to take his angel into heaven and allow him to meet her there anon. First, he would seek revenge and see to the welfare of his son.
His eyes popped open when the grasses rustled in front of him and the ground opened up. A muddy black demon arose with shiny eyes and yellow teeth. Grinning, it exited the hole with a most ordinary sword held high. Then there was naught, but darkness.
