HARVEST OF BLESSINGS -- AMISH FICTION BY CHARLOTTE HUBBARD

HARVEST OF BLESSINGS
by Charlotte Hubbard

HARVEST OF BLESSINGS Blurb:

The tranquil little town of Willow Ridge is facing a startling challenge. Wealthy Nora Glick Landwehr is determined to make it her home again—and put her past to rest. Cast out by her own family, Nora can’t reconcile with Old Amish ways or her strict father. But she’ll do anything to help her community embrace the future . . . and make amends to the daughter she had to give up. She certainly has no time for her reckless new neighbor Luke Hooley. They disagree about almost everything. And how can she trust him if he always seems to believe the worst about her? Somehow, though, his unexpected support and passionate heart are helping her find her own way in faith. And Nora will discover that even in the face of insidious lies and unyielding judgment, God creates unexpected chances for forgiveness—and love.

HARVEST OF BLESSINGS Excerpt:

The moving van hadn’t yet arrived, so Nora pulled back onto the county highway where she’d begun her trip down memory lane. While everyone in town was at Annie Mae and Adam’s wedding, she had the perfect chance to revisit her childhood home. To prepare herself for the ordeal she would soon face.

She pulled into the lane and parked behind the house, somewhat surprised to see the surrounding pastureland planted in tall corn that shimmered in the breeze. Knowing it wouldn’t be locked, Nora slipped into the back door. The kitchen appeared smaller and shabbier than she recalled, as though it hadn’t seen fresh paint since she’d left. How odd to stand in this hub of the house and not detect even a whiff of breakfast.

Nora moved on before she lost her nerve. She felt like an intruder—and she wanted to be long gone before anyone came home from the wedding. She peeked into the small downstairs room where she and her mother had sewn the family’s clothes on an ancient treadle machine—

Nora gaped. On a twin bed lay a motionless female form, like a corpse laid out in a casket. Is this what Hiram had meant by implying her parents were barely alive? Did she dare approach, or would this woman pop up like a zombie from an old horror movie and leer at her with hollowed eyes and a toothless grin? Nora wanted to bolt, yet she felt compelled to look this woman—surely her mother—in the face. If Mamma was so far gone, why wasn’t someone sitting with her? Or was she merely napping, too tired to attend the wedding? The way Nora had it figured, her mother was in her early seventies now—several years younger than her dat. Why did she look so far gone?

Holding her breath, Nora slipped to the bedside. The room felt stuffy in the July heat, yet a faded quilt covered her mother’s shriveled form up to her chin. A kapp concealed all but the front of her white hair, so all Nora saw was a pallid face etched with wrinkles. The eyes were closed, and again Nora felt she was observing a stranger in a casket rather than looking at her own mother. Last time she’d been here, Mamma’s face had been contorted with indignation as disgust hardened her piercing hazel eyes—

And suddenly those eyes were focused on her.

Nora froze. Not a muscle moved in her mother’s face yet Mamma’s gaze didn’t waver—until her eyes widened with recognition. Or was it disbelief, or fear?

Nora didn’t stick around to figure that out. Hurrying from the airless room and through the kitchen, Nora burst through the back door. She couldn’t gulp air fast enough as she climbed into her car and sped down the lane. She felt as though she’d stared Death in the face and Death had stared right back.

AUTHOR SHERREL LEE RELEASES EXPOSED BY RAGE VIA KINDLE SCOUT!

EXPOSED BY RAGE
by Sherrel Lee

EXPOSED BY RAGE Blurb:

He has a dead body.  She has the seedy connections. To solve the crime they are forced to work together.

To keep her mother’s reputation from destroying her, Ashley Dix Gibson had to learn at an early age to persevere and tune out the lies, gossip, and the bullies.  Detective Michael DeMarco has no desire to team up with a woman with ties to the underbelly of the porn industry but if he wants to solve his case, he has no other options. When Ashley and DeMarco combine their resources to find a brutal killer, sparks of distrust turn into the fires of passion.

EXPOSED BY RAGE Excerpt:

I must have been feeling weak, because instead of rushing out to confront a few of those I wanted to talk to, I invited DeMarco in.  He’d left Braden in charge of the scene and didn’t appear to be in a rush to start the reports he’d have to do.  That thought made me smile.  For once I wasn’t chained to a desk for seventy-five percent of the investigation.  I could get used to being out of the Army and doing things my own way.

“Glad to see the smile.  I know this has been extremely hard on you,” DeMarco said.  “Want to share?”

“I was thinking about Jillie, wanting me to come home.  She kept trying to talk me into the leaving the military.  It took her death to accomplish that.”  Hot, wet tears started streaming down my face.  Appalled, I turned away from DeMarco and stumbled toward the bedroom.  He didn’t say anything or try to stop me, but he did follow me. When I didn’t collapse on the bed, he put his arms around me, gave a gentle hug and helped me to sit on the mattress.

Damn.  This was awkward.  The harder I tried to stop crying, the more I leaked tears.  I don’t cry.  I don’t show emotion, especially to guys.  I didn’t want to feel the warmth of his touch and long to put my head on his shoulder.  But I did.  Before I knew what was happening his lips were on mine and I was holding him.  Desperate to keep from drowning.

He pushed back, looking into my eyes.  Reading me like the clichéd open book.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER FOR ME!

This is an uh-oh day. Since I slipped up and didn't have a blog ready, I've revised one from this time last year. Sorry, but I'll try to do a better job in the future.

Why do I write novels? Mostly because I can’t stop.☺  There have been a few times when I became discouraged with my career path and decided to quit writing. I couldn’t. It appears I HAVE to write, And I love reading books that end with happily-ever-after for the main characters.

Seriously, I believe romance offers hope to readers who face what seems like insurmountable problems in their own lives. Reading about characters who overcome challenges and achieve happily-ever-after offers readers the dream that they too can achieve their dreams. In fact, I say romance authors sell hope. Since I’m an eclectic reader, I’m an eclectic writer. I write paranormal, contemporary and historical romance. I've also written a couple of mysteries, one of which is a cozy mystery.

My cozy mystery, which also
has a happy ending

I write the kinds of stories I enjoy reading. As a theme, I want readers to find hope in my novels. Another theme is family in various forms, but always that family support one another--even if family is bonded friends or members of a town rather than blood relatives. Finally, I think a second chance/redemption is a continual theme. Don’t we all wish we had a second chance to right past wrong decisions?

The most redeemed hero,
a former con man

I want readers to sigh with pleasure at the outcome of the characters at the same time they’re sorry the book is ended. Also, I want readers to feel hopeful after one of my books. Let’s face it, I’m not Ken Follett and I don’t write books like PILLARS OF THE EARTH. I love Follett’s books, but that’s not at all what I want to write. Romances and cozy mysteries are what a lot of people call mind candy...novels intended to entertain and provide escape from worldly cares. Yep, that's for me. Otherwise, why not watch the evening news?

One of my big passions is genealogy and family history. I’ve always loved history, and learning about family brings history alive for me. My brother and I have compiled a book on my father’s family and hope to have it published next month. My dad is no longer living, but he had asked me to do this book, so my brother and I are trying to honor the request. I also love the old family photos and collected those for the book and for my own family. Both of my daughters are interested, so I’ve made copies for each of them and we’re placing them in acid free albums.

Thomas Linzy Clemmons
1810-1864

Another passion is browsing antique malls. My younger daughter and I used to have booths in a couple of antique malls, but the time required to maintain a good selection is too much for us. We loved it, though. If either of us won the lottery, that’s probably what my younger daughter would do with her life. In the meantime, my daughter has opened a booth in a mall where her friend has several booths. Maybe I should remember to buy a lottery ticket.

A favorite book that I
reread about once a year

My husband and I like to watch movies (thanks, Netflix!). Most of my free goof-off time is spent reading. My husband’s an avid reader, so some evenings we read instead of watching TV or a movie.

One of the movies we've seen so often
we know all the dialogue

I appreciate so much the readers who have told me they like my books and my writing! Positive feedback fuels my progress on the next book. I appreciate my family for their support and assistance. My husband maintains my website. Both daughters help in various ways. Every day I get to do what I love. Consider me a lucky woman living her own happily-ever-after!

RUNNER'S HIGH? MAKE THAT WRITER'S HIGH!

We’ve all heard about a “runner’s high” and how it takes the runner into a “zone” where he’s oblivious to all else.  You may not have known that there is also a “writer’s high.”  The writer is in his or her “zone” which translates to the world being created and characters peopling that world.

In this magical place, the writer becomes so immersed in the story that all else fades away. Time. Sounds. Smells. Presumably if the house were on fire, I’d know, but you get the idea.

When my writing is going well and the story is moving forward, I lose track of how long I’ve been sitting in my chair. I become my main characters and my mind follows them as the cursor moves across the monitor. This is on a good writing day—or night.
Last night I quit for the day feeling as if it were nine or ten. It was two this morning. Oops. (Writers are often night people who stay up late into the night when the world is quiet and there are no distractions.)

On the other hand, a bad day is like pulling my own wisdom teeth with a pair of pliers. Nothing works. The phone rings, there’s email to read, texts, pets, social media, all sorts of distractions. Please understand that I love hearing from family and friends. I’d seriously hate to lose touch with them. I enjoy Facebook, email, texts, phone calls and visits.

However, each interruption takes me out of the story and I lose traction. I feel as if I’m spinning my wheels and going nowhere. I want to shoot my characters and move on to another book. Nope, not allowed.

Recently, I read an excellent article by romantic suspense author Allison Brennan about those days and how to get through them. The article is titled, “Writers Write.” Yes, we do. She suggested that self-doubt is rooted in fear.

Well, yeah. I'm always afraid.

What if I can’t make this book interesting?

What if readers are disappointed?

What if, what if, what if...

I’m reminded of a quote by Agatha Christie about such a day. “. . . . I had no joy in writing, no élan.  I had worked out the plot--a conventional plot, partly adapted from one of my other short stories.  I knew, as one might say, where I was going, but I could not see the scene in my mind's eye, and the people would not come alive . . . . That was the moment when I changed from an amateur to a professional.  I assumed the burden of a profession, which is to write even when you don't want to, don't much like what you are writing, and aren't writing particularly well.”

That explains how I felt about my current work in progress a couple of weeks ago. I’m already far past the time I had planned to publish WINTER BRIDE and am still working on this book. I liked the beginning, knew where I was heading for a good ending, but the middle was murky. Very murky.

But I also recalled Nora Roberts’ quote that “I can fix bad writing. I can’t fix a blank page.” So, I persevered.

Then, magically, the last few days I have been back in my zone, living in my characters’ world and enjoying being there. I’m on a definite high. Endorphins are pumping.

Life is good again!

LEAVING LIBERTY Excerpt

The refreshing feeling of swimming in the pond was long gone. Libby’s skin was still hot and electrified from being so close to Jackson during the ride back to the house.

When she turned to leave the tack room, Jackson dragged her into his arms.
“Hold on a second,” he said.

Her legs melted beneath her and the only thing holding her upright was Jackson. In his arms she felt small and whole and special in a way she’d never known.

Libby had dated men over the years. She’d thought she’d been in love once. But nothing had ever felt like this.

Jackson pulled her closer, pressing her chest against his. But she didn’t feel the sensation she’d expected with the contact.

She fought all the usual fears she’d had about what it would be like to be with a man and just allowed herself to feel. Would he know the difference in her? Would it matter? She didn’t want to think about it. Instead, Libby focused on the feel of Jackson’s arms wound tightly around her body, and the stirring she felt in her belly, as she pressed herself up against his hot skin.

His strength and the gentleness of his hands as his fingers dug into her hair. When he finally bent his head and his mouth covered hers, it made it easy for Libby to forget the struggles she’d been facing. Oh, it would be so wonderful to stay in Jackson’s arms, she decided. Nothing could hurt her there.

Jackson pulled away to gaze into her eyes and take a deep breath, but it only left her wanting more of him. Everything inside her screamed that this was so right.

“I’d wondered what it would be like to taste you,” he said, looking down at her with a smile that stole her breath away.

YIPPEE! AN AUSSIE INVASION!

What a wonderful and hectic weekend this has been. My online friend Susan Horsnell and her husband Robert arrived Thursday from Australia. In addition to their other trip goals, Susan hoped to meet several western historical authors and see Texas firsthand. To help welcome them, Hero and I hosted a little get together Sunday. Several authors and their spouses came to meet Susan in person after knowing her online for several years.

Susan Horsnell (in white) shows Hebby Roman
and Kirsten Osbourne something on her laptop

In addition to moi, writers included Susan Horsnell, Kirsten Osbourne, Carra Copelin, Lyn Horner, Brenda Chitwood, and Hebby Roman. In addition to Hero, husbands included Robert, Keith, Jerry, Ken, and Luis.

Carra Copelin's hubby Jerry and Robert Horsnell at table. Kirsten Osbourne's husband Keith in dark red shirt in the corner is talking to Luis Roman (behind Jerry).
You can image my excitement.  Hero and I used to give huge dinner parties, but we have so-o-o lost the knack. Panic! Darling Daughter 2 came to help out. Eventually we realized these are friends who are not going to be super critical as long as there’s enough to eat and lots of laughter.
You can’t get a group of writers together and not have talking and laughing. Not possible. You may have heard the din from where you are.

Carra Copelin and Lyn Horner with me
standing behind Lyn
You may wonder why Susan writes Texas-set historical romances when she lives in Australia. Why not? Many Americans write English Regencies or English-set mysteries. Besides, those of us who love the Old West can’t help ourselves. Another besides, Susan also writes books set in Australia. We simply have to tell our stories.

Hero and Luis Roman

There are a lot of similarities between the Australian frontier and the Old West of the United States. Perhaps that’s why writing stories set in Texas came natural to Susan. (She also writes erotica as Lacey Roberts and those are set anywhere.)

Darling Daughter 2 and Hero

Susan is a retired nurse and, as such, has worked in a variety of interesting jobs. She’s very knowledgeable and adept at discussing medicine. Robert is a retired Commodore from the Royal Australian Navy, which means he’s only one step from an Admiral. Sounds impressive, but he’s a very down-to-earth guy who’s a good conversationalist.

Carra Copelin, Lyn Horner, and Brenda Chitwood

In addition to her writing, Susan hosts the free website and blog, Easychair Book Shop at http://easychairbookshop.com Susan demonstrates her nurturing ability by promoting other authors work on her site. Stop by and check out the site if you haven’t already done so.

Hmmm. Masked bandit is wearing the same shirt as Brenda.

During their visit, we had great plans for touring Fort Worth, but snow and ice played havoc with those plans. Sadly, Susan and Robert are leaving Tuesday to head for Houston, San Antonio and New Orleans. They’ll return here the 16th for several nights before boarding their plane to return home.

Susan forefront in white. Behind her, left to right, Lyn Horner in green, Carra Copelin in flowered top, Brenda Chitwood, Hebby Roman in black and burgundy, Kirsten Osbourne in turquoise print, and (sadly) me, in a flowing tunic that makes me look the size of a house. So much for wearing a knit tunic to be comfortable!
Hero and I count ourselves very fortunate to have Susan and Robert visit. Wish you could have been here too! Next time we’ll save a bowl of chili and some cornbread for you.

The Lady of the Garter
by Marisa Dillon

Marisa Dillon will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour,

Marisa was kind enough to submit to an interview and fun photos. She was a delightful interviewee, as you will learn:

Hi, Caroline. Thank you for having me on your blog today. It’s great to be here with my hot latte to talk about steamy romance.

Where did you grow up? Locale?

I grew up in Ohio, the Midwest, where everyone’s friendly and we can a look a stranger in the eye without being afraid. Siblings? I’m the oldest of three children, with a brother in the middle, who is a multimedia journalist and author, and my beautiful sister works at the Ohio State University in international affairs.

Married, single? Children?

I married my college sweetheart and we have two talented sons, a graphic designer/entrepreneur who lives in Philadelphia and the other, is a 3D printing engineer who just moved to New York City. Thankfully, they chose cities that I love to visit and are only two hours away from each other by train.

Marisa's Family

Lovely to see a family involved in an activity together. Were you considered a “bookworm” or a jock?

Actually, I was a mix of both, plus a thespian. I was lucky and had all types of friends. I was on the drill team, honor roll and was always in the high school theatrical productions.

Who are your favorite author and favorite genre?

Johanna Lindsey, author of fifty novels in various subgenres of historical romance. Many of her titles have been New York Times best sellers. I believe I’ve read every one of them, beginning with Gentle Rouge. That was the first historical romance I’d ever read. When my two boys were little, and my husband worked nights, I needed a distraction. I could always count on a Johanna to deliver a cleverly crafted story, with strong characterization, and the happily ever after I wanted.

Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?

Wow, it’s hard to pick one, because writers like me love quotes. I accumulate them like some people collect baseball cards, but here’s my favorite that sums up how I feel about life:  "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." -- Melody Beattie. I think that is so beautifully articulated. I wish I’d written this.

How long have you been writing?

I was drawn to writing when my fifth grade poem was read aloud and published on the class room door as an example of what the teacher wanted. From then, I was hooked. My early writing was poetry, and then I dabbled with writing scripts for neighborhood plays that I’d staged with my friends in my garage. Later, a degree in journalism. But my career took me into television writing and marketing, where I work now. It was just in the last few years, I was able to get back to my true love of fiction writing.

Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?

Thank goodness for the portability of laptops. Because I don’t have to be teetered, I can write just about anywhere. I named my laptop, Myrddin, after my heroine’s gyrfalcon and I’ll take him shady side by the pool in the summer, by the fireplace in the winter or out to Starbucks, when I need a strong dose of caffeine. Sometimes, my cat, Rio, wants to help. But I’ve always wanted a crystal chandelier over an antique mahogany desk and I bet, if I created that environment, I’d be happy to write there, too.

You definitely look relaxed therewith your muse by your side. Great place to write. Are you a plotter or a panzer?

I’m a panster. This is so opposite to how the rest of my life runs. I’m a total planning geek in my day to day, with Outlook scheduling my every move. But some of those organizational skills must be running in the background, because after the first draft is done, I finally build an outline of the story, then I start filling in more detail and enhancing the plot.

Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?

The inspiration for The Lady of the Garter came to me after a trip I took back in time one autumn afternoon. In Ohio we have one of the largest and most authentic Renaissance Festivals in the country.

I even dressed the part and took a ride on a warhorse. I was inspired by what I saw. The jousting reenactments, danger, romance, chivalry, comedy, comradery. It was all there and I wanted to write a story about that world.

Do you set daily writing goals? Word count? Number of chapters? Do you get a chance to write every day?

Caroline, I do write every day, but I can’t include daily goals, word count or chapter number requirements in my novel writing because I can only do that in my spare time. My day job is working as a marketing consultant for clients who need help with advertising on television and in social media. When I’m not writing for them, I’m writing for myself. And sometimes, I go back and forth between, just to keep my mind nibble, like exercise for the body.

What do you hope your writing brings to readers? What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

Dream big and don’t doubt yourself. Take workshops and join a local group that supports the industry. Success is not a limited commodity in the publishing world. Many authors are willing to give an aspiring writer a leg up.

A fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you.

One of my first jobs out of college was working as a weather forecaster for a local TV station before you had to be a meteorologist. Thank goodness I didn’t have to be one then, I wasn’t great in science.

Something about you that would surprise or shock readers.

I belly dance with a Middle Eastern dance Troupe called Roja at cultural events and festivals. It started out as an activity for me to get in shape and after I did, I fell in love with the art form. I take classes and workshops to learn as much as I can about technique and new choreographies. Caroline, you are the first blogger to get a photo of me dancing in costume.

What a fun photo, Marisa. Is your book a series? If so, how long? Family saga, other?

I’m working on the second in the Garter series that will include a Highlander spin. I have an outline for a third full novel and a novella to round out the series.

Can you give readers a blurb about your book?

When Henry VII takes the throne, not all are loyal to the new king. Garter knight, Sir James, is charged with bringing dissenters to justice. Determined to fulfill his vows, he’s unprepared for Lady Elena, a girl from his past he’s never forgotten.

Lady Elena defies her family and disguises herself as a squire to reunite with the man she’s always loved. She might be able to wield a sword, but she still possesses a woman’s heart.

Thrust into a world of danger and family rivalry, James and Elena face the ultimate test.

Can James avenge his father’s death and find passion, or will his Garter oaths hold him to a life of service without love?

How about an excerpt:

James rubbed the back of his neck, then staggered forward. “Are you a gift from the duke? Where is my bloody squire, Edward?” he growled.
He’d obviously drank more than he’d eaten. She could smell the ale. “Your squire left when I arrived to tend to your bath, milord,” she answered. “He promised to return shortly.”
She hoped the threat of an interruption might keep James’ intensions honorable.
That made him smile. “Is this how you tend to the bath for your guests?” His grin turned wicked. “A bath with you would give me great pleasure,” he admitted, his heated gaze boiling her blood.
“I confess there’s scarcely enough room in here for me.”
Her observation didn’t stop him from fumbling to remove his boots. Then he yanked off his breeches and shirt.
Elena sucked in a nervous breath—she loved seeing him naked. But if she didn’t take control of the situation soon, James would trap her in the tub.
“Come, you can sit on my lap,” he suggested.
She laughed louder than she should have, uncertain of what she wanted. But his smoldering gaze warmed her insides, making her wonder if he didn’t know who she was, what liberties she might take.
She wrung her hands, unsure what to do next. “Turn away and give me a moment of privacy, then I will tend to you.” She stepped out of the tub and draped herself in a towel the boys had left.
“That arse looks familiar. This is not my first time at Berkeley, girl. Pray tell, have we been together before?”

Remarkably, the first part of that has prediction has come true. I still have my day job and I still have my physic council. Stay tuned to see how it all works out.

LADY OF THE GARTER Blurb:

LADY OF THE GARTER Excerpt:

Servants began to bustle about the hall. Men offered pitchers of rose-scented water and towels. Overflowing baskets of fresh bread and pitchers of wine were placed on the tables. Elena was ready for some mead after all she’d been through. Once the king’s taster sampled the fair, he nodded to the queen. The feast had officially begun. Nudging her brother, Elena confessed, “I was ordered out of the tent.”

“What did you expect? What kind of man do you take James for?” He laughed, raising his goblet in honor of the king.

“You tease me,” she said. “I don’t like it.”

“What did you find, Edward?”

“A foul-mouthed, dirty warrior,” she complained. “Not the sweet innocent lad I fell in love with.”

William’s eyes were filled with merriment. “Lads grow into men. Men become knights.” He studied her face. “And what of your other goal?”

“Whatever do you mean?”

“Becoming a knight,” he reminded her.

Elena gasped. The other squires stared as if they’d overheard her brother.

William chuckled, raising his cup again. “Long live the king.” The squires joined his salute.

Elena shot her brother a look of warning. How could he be so careless? Spirits. She rolled her eyes. “I admit it,” she said with defiance, keeping her voice low. “I want to become a knight. I’ve never kept that secret from you, but we both agreed I must serve as a squire first.”

Their conversation was interrupted by a woman who placed a trencher on the table in front of them.

“Peacock, venison, quail, and rabbit,” the wench announced, flashing a toothless grin.

William quickly helped himself to half the meat. Always selfish, he even chose the tenderest pieces of venison.

She glowered at him. “Will nothing change? I must accept the meager portions left after you claim the best?”

He licked his fingers, then leaned in so only she could hear his reply. “To these lads you’re just another squire. But I know what’s underneath those pants. So yes, you are still a female, and I get the best. Be satisfied there’s anything left for you to eat.”
