LITTLE DOVE

Little Dove
The Redenzione Series Book 1
by
Perryen Livingston

Genre: Romantic Suspense

An emotionally gripping story about love, family secrets, and
self-discovery.

A single test was all it took to turn my world on its axis. The life
that I had and the life that I knew nothing about, would soon
collide. Love and hate, truth and lies, bitterness and rejection,
redemption and clarity- would I find my truth? I am Talyn Rose
Easton-Galiano and this is my story of who I was, who I became, and
ultimately who I am. They say that life is stranger than fiction...
but they don't have my life.

I think I’ve smoked two packs of cigarettes today and chugged Illy espresso by the gallon. Jamieson needs to get here already. He called me from the road to tell me he had a stop to make that was important to him but would be here by suppertime. I hope he likes shrimp and grits because I’ve made enough to feed the whole state of Louisiana. I’m in my bathroom putting my face on when Gracen comes in.

“Your pop is at the gate. You ready to meet him, beautiful? Breathe and enjoy the experience. He never gave up on you.”

“I’m ready. Does this lipstick make me look like a hooker?”

“Babe, your lipstick looks great. I take it that shoes don’t go with Chanel?” I love beautiful shoes but hate wearing them.

“I’m going for the classy-country-bumpkin look. Chanel goes with everything, Gracen, but shoes do not. Let’s go meet my pop!”

I can see his truck coming up the drive from the front windows but I can’t wait. I step out onto the front porch and literally see my past coming toward me. He sees me and the truck starts moving faster. Five, four, three, two, one—it’s go time. The truck door flings open and my pop… he gets out and stands rooted to the gravel drive and cries.

I fly off the porch in my bare feet and vintage Chanel sundress and run right into his arms. He grabs me tight and I can feel the past forty-one years within his hug. Sometimes life is ugly and not fair but sometimes the ugly makes way for the beautiful moments that restore your faith. This is our beautiful moment.

“Little Dove, I have dreamed of this day all of your life. I can now live in peace and when my time is up, I can die a complete man. You are more beautiful than your pictures. You look like your grandma Sharon. I love you so much, baby girl.” He won’t let go and I don’t want his hug to ever end.

“Pop, I can’t find the words to tell you what this means to me. I’ve been accused of having diarrhea of the mouth because I never shut up but… words just can’t do justice to this moment. I love you. Thank you for never forgetting me.”

Perryen Livingston is a Southern-raised, Sicilian born, self-proclaimed rebel
Belle. She is a lover of espresso, great books, all things Chanel, and Great Danes.
Perryen spent two decades traveling the world with her Air Force husband and
two sons. In 2016, she finally was able to put down roots in Central
Florida— the land of sunshine, beaches, and Disney.

Always one who needed to be creative to thrive, whether it be ballet or
fashion design— Perryen knew her next adventure lay between the
pages of a novel, her novel.
When she’s not writing, Perryen lives the domestic life wifein’ and
momin’: lint-rolling dog hair off her signature-style black
leggings, walking around barefoot, and spending time relentlessly
loving on her family.

Little Dove is her first book in The Redenzione Series and will have two
more books to follow. You can stay up to date on what’s happening

January

She had a face that was completely forgettable. At least that was the way Jamie had described her. A girl you might overlook if you weren’t careful, which Jamie had said would be a shame.

Jamie had been correct. If Adam had simply seen Jamie’s wife sitting at a desk, he would have walked right by. It was when she moved that she began to make an impression. She had a compelling grace, especially for a small woman. He would have expected her to, well, bounce like a small bird on a fence. She glided as if books rested on her head.

Of course, he thought almost smiling. A marquess’s daughter. She had undoubtedly balanced a goodly number of books on her head.

“How can I help you, Your Grace?” she asked, setting her glasses down on a table and rising to her feet. “I don’t believe we’ve met?”

“To my eternal regret,” he said, “we have not met before now. I should have begun at the beginning. I am Adam Marrick, Mrs. Grace. Jamie’s cousin.”

And there it was, he thought. The reason Jamie had fallen in love with Georgina Wyndham in the first place. That smile. Wide, bright, warm, all-encompassing, as if she embraced not just him but the world. Before he knew it, Adam was smiling back.

“He loved you very much,” he said.

Her eyes glittered with welling tears, but that smile held. “I know,” she whispered. “I loved him dearly. I am so very glad to finally meet you. He spoke of you as well, of course. You were quite his hero. Hussars, wasn’t it?”

“It was.”

She invited him to sit, where they enjoyed a bit of society over tea.

“Lully,” he blurted out, appalled at his own clumsiness. “I’m really here for her.”

His words were met with a rather stark silence. “Pardon?”

He nodded, setting down his saucer. “I am actually here to bring her some news.”

Again Georgie tilted her head. “Lully is four, Your Grace. What news could you have to give her?”

This wasn’t going the way he’d planned. He should have believed Jamie from the start. Maybe his reaction to Georgie wouldn’t have knocked him so off-center.

“I need to take her to Scotland.”

“I beg your pardon?”

He tried briefly closing his eyes. “She is needed there.”

She was staring at him as if he’d begun to bark like a dog. “In Scotland.” Suddenly she was getting to her feet. “Are you feeling perfectly well, Your Grace?” she asked. “I can call for the local physician. He is old, but….”

He should have known this would be her reaction. “No,” he said, There was no avoiding it. He had to get to his feet as well. “No,” he said, grabbing his cane and hoisting himself up, his knee protesting like an unoiled hinge. “I am not ill. I was coming to see you anyway. I promise. Not only because I wanted to meet the woman who had stolen Jamie’s heart, but because I made a promise to him.”

“That is lovely.” Her voice didn’t sound like it. “But not to the point.”

He nodded and took another breath. “There is news,” he repeated. “Jamie’s mother has died.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

She neither sounded nor looked like she meant it. Having known Jamie’s mother well, he couldn’t really blame her. “If we could sit...”

Giving him a chagrined nod, she sat after him. “How can that concern us?” she asked. “Jamie’s family made certain we knew we were not welcome.”

“Well, since Jamie is…gone, it means that Lully has inherited. I need to take her with me to accept.”

Adam didn’t think you could see fire in the color green. He certainly could now.

“Inherited? Inherited what? Jamie was disowned.”

“You cannot disown a title, Mrs. Grace.”

“A what?”

“She is no longer simply a little girl,” he said as gently as he could. “She’s a duchess.”

She seemed to glide up to her feet, rising to her full height, which suddenly seemed not so insignificant. Following to his own feet, Adam wondered suddenly how anyone could possibly think she was forgettable. She was Boedica, Titania, Maeve. He had the oddest feeling she was looking down at him, instead of standing at his shoulder.

And then she closed the conversation.

“No.”

RELEASE DAY FOR MONK'S BRIDE!

Woo Hoo! Today is release day for MONK’S BRIDE, book 5 of the Kincaid Series. I can hardly wait for you to read this book and let me know what you think!

MONK’S BRIDE came about because I’ve had numerous requests for Monk’s story since he appeared as a secondary character in THE MOST UNSUITABLE HUSBAND, Kincaid book 2. In preparation for this release, I’ve re-edited and updated the first four Kincaid novels.

Kincaid romances 1-4 are sensual but book 5 is sweet due to Monk’s character. He didn’t come by his nickname by being a womanizer. I love the man and admired his character in THE MOST UNSUITABLE HUSBAND. If you haven’t yet read that book, the universal Amazon link is http://mybook.to/Husband.

I’m so excited for you to read Monk’s story in MONK’S BRIDE.

Here’s the blurb:

A destitute widow; a reformed con man; the danger that links them…

Betsie Galloway Hirsch has escaped Memphis with her son Liam. Her gambling husband tricked the wrong people and they’re demanding Betsie pay his debts—or else. She’s come to Kincaid Springs to stay with her mother and seek a safe place for her son. Being so far from her former home, she feels secure. That is, until danger confronts her.

After 34 years alone, Michael “Monk” Magonagle is falling in love with Betsie and is fond of her son. Monk is certain she is not free of the men her late husband cheated. Although he is not a violent man by nature, Monk is brave and willing to fight for Betsie’s safety. He and the men of the Kincaid family prepare to meet the enemy.

How can Betsie and Liam be protected from the approaching danger? Will she and Monk be able to forge a love that endures or will one of them be silenced forever? What toll will the enemy exact?

The Universal Amazon buy link is http://mybook.to/Monk MONK’S BRIDE is in e-book and is enrolled in KU. Soon it will be available in print.

Here’s an excerpt of their first kiss:

They were at the Kincaid front door. She hated their time together was over.

Monk put his hands on her shoulders. “Betsie, may I kiss you goodnight?”

Inside she was yelling yes!, but she pretended to be demure. She certainly didn’t want him to think she was a hoyden. “I think that would be all right.”

He removed his hat and pulled her into an embrace. She’d thought he meant a kiss on the cheek, but that wasn’t the case. His lips sought hers softly at first, then as if he would consume her. Without conscious thought her arms went around him, pulling him closer.

When he broke the kiss, it was as if she’d been deprived of a part of herself. Each of them panted with ragged breaths. He held her a few minutes longer, his forehead against hers.

“I apologize for getting carried away.”

“Please don’t. I was hanging on to you as if I was drowning and you were a life preserver.”

He brushed an errant curl from her face. “Then you’re not sorry?”

“Not a bit. I have to admit I was carried away, too. Perhaps it’s not proper to admit, but I enjoyed your kisses.”

Her admission brought a wide smile to his face. “Goodnight, Betsie. I’ll be by to escort you to Mass in the morning. I hope I may call again soon.”

“I look forward to both.” She slipped inside and hurried to her room.

She changed into her night clothes and crept in to check on Liam. He was sound asleep with his dog cuddled close but had kicked off his cover. She leaned over to give him a kiss and tuck his sheet around him.

Her lips still tingled from Monk’s kiss. He was her beau, a serious beau. She wanted to dance around the room. Instead, she crept to her room and crawled into her bed. She’d have sweet dreams tonight.

Friends, I hope you have a wonderful day!

MAMA'S MOON -- CRIME/ROMANCE

Don't miss the Rafflecopter at the end of this post!

Mama's Moon
by
Jerome Mark Antil

Crime/Romance

Date Published: May 7, 2019
Publisher: Little York Books

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

This suspenseful sequel to “One More Last Dance” follows Peck Finch’s search for his mother after leaving home at the age of nine, and the struggles of his friend Gabe, who is simultaneously facing a second-degree murder charge.

Set within the rich and storied culture of Louisiana, this tale of self-discovery explores important questions about the meaning of love, friendship, family and more.

“Mamma’s Moon” has received early praise for its layered storytelling with BlueInk Reviews calling Antil’s newest work “a lovely story about the strong bonds of friendship that often supplant family ties.”

Excerpt:

“Peck, can I ask you something personal? You don’t have to answer if it makes you uncomfortable.”

“Ax,” Peck said.

“I was thinking about Millie—you know, her wanting to meet your mamma. What can you tell me about your youth, son? We never talk about it. How far back do you remember?”

Peck placed his fork in the bowl and sat back.

“If it’s uncomfortable, we’ll drop it,” Gabe said.

“I grow’d at Bayou Chene—there and Petit Anse Bayou, ‘tween Bayou Sorrel and Choctaw. Foster nanna is all I remember. There was gator man. Gator man belt-strapped me good if I dropped the bait shrimp buckets. I had to scoop shrimp and carry the buckets until his pirogue was full. He’d sell bait to tourists at the fishing docks.”

“How old were you?”

“I couldn’t swim is what I remember.”

“Did he pay you?”

“Nah, nah…he’d dog collar me around my neck and chain me under porch back of his house. I worked, is all.”

Gabe sat silently.

“My foster nanna would tell me gator man was lar’ning me and to see I mind him good. He’d tow me for gator bait. When the moon come out, I’d look up near all night pretending the moon was my mother looking down and I’d talk to her and promise her I was a good boy and no trouble, and I’d be quiet and behave if she ever come back. I talked to the moon.”

“She heard you, son. Your mother heard every word, I’m certain of it.”

“What do I tell Millie? Peck is scared she will run away when she knows I don’t know my own mamma.”

“Millie may still hug her baby doll, but she’s a stronger woman than you think, son. Spoon some etoufee and let me think a minute. I need to think.”

The lobby of the hotel and both party rooms to its left were empty. The front desk was an ornate wooden antique table—a man sitting behind, chin in hand, dozing off. Someone was at the piano in the bar among the laughter and an occasional cheer of a celebrated moment.

“Peck, you owe it to your Millie,” Gabe said. “Tell her the truth.”

“Hanh?” Peck grunted.

“The problem is, this took place long ago in your life. It’s impos¬sible for you to remember the real truth—the whole story.”

“What you sayin’, Gabe?”

“I’m saying you have to go back to that Bayou Chene—or wher¬ever—and find out for yourself. When you know the truth, that’s when you can tell Millie the story. She’s strong. She’d never be afraid of the truth coming from you. That woman loves you so much, but it’s up to you to learn the truth—if not for her, for your children.”

“I love her too, frien’, just as you say—so much.”

“It’s settled. You’ll go search it out, my brother.”

“I’ll go, I surely will—in the morning,” Peck said.

“You’re a strong man, son. Look them straight in the eye—don’t let anybody frighten or intimidate you.”

“I’m not scared no more.”

“You have some weeks before night school starts,” Gabe said. “Take any time you need to get the answers.”

Excerpt

Prologue

Slade

BODIES WEREN’T foreign to me, but they weren’t commonplace either.

Trying to keep my feet out of the water, I stooped over, not too much, to study the corpse floating face down about three feet away. The ears were chewed on by some kind of creature. A denim shirt clung to a pudgy back, and the torso gently rocked though no boat stirred the South Edisto River.

The last body I’d discovered in Newberry, my most recent major case, made me vomit my breakfast burrito, and if I hadn’t skipped lunch today, I’d have upchucked here, too.

We were supposed to be on vacation. Or rather, I’d been ordered by my boss to take a vacation.

“Go take basket weaving or something,” he’d said, his way of telling me to get out of his hair for a while and quit finding investigations where there were none. Sorry, but when I thought there was a case, there usually was a case. My record proved it. He sort of pissed me off.

So I’d Googled basket weaving and South Carolina Lowcountry, and made reservations for a week at Indigo Plantation. I was from this piece of the state, and revisiting would be nice. Plus, I planned to make the biggest, gaudiest basket in the world, and set the damn thing on his desk when I returned.

Patiently, Wayne had stood guard on dry land, while I searched for the right grass for a basket, along the edge of the river. But as I waded calf deep in the water, a heavy something bumped me from behind.
Imagining a gator, I screamed, teetered, and fell, making the lawman come running.

Wayne saw the body before I did. “Don’t touch it, Slade!” he’d yelled.

From sitting waist deep in brackish water, slick mud under my butt, I scrambled like a crab at surf’s edge, putting distance between me and the dead man. “It touched me first,” I yelled back.

Gently but quickly, he rolled the man over and checked for a pulse.

I’m sure my eyes rolled. Skin color and missing eyelids told us what we needed. I couldn’t stop staring though I was sure I’d regret it in my dreams.

“Stay here and guard the scene,” Wayne said, in his federal agent voice, the boyfriend in him gone.

“Don’t disturb anything. And don’t let anyone else disturb anything.”

Then off he waded to shore and left me. Just like that. Before I could ask what to do if the body tried to float off.

Author Interview

How did you come up with the name of this book?

Dying on Edisto fits a pattern we established with the series from the outset. The odd-numbered books are Something on/of Edisto. Three words. The even-numbered books are Edisto Something, two words.

Murder on Edisto
Edisto Jinx
Echoes of Edisto
Edisto Stranger
Dying on Edisto

This being book five, it was time for the first pattern. Sometimes I think it’s more for our purposes than the reader’s.

But one might ask why is Edisto in every title. These stories are steeped and rich in setting. The real Edisto Island is a jungle-like environment in the South Carolina coastal Lowcountry. Setting owns you down there. Salt air, bugs, and all the wildlife that comes with the ocean and marsh. Sunrises, sunsets. Sounds of the ocean as well as the birds. . . the raccoons at night. Add that to the fact that Edisto Beach is a vacation destination, gave us strong reasoning to insert the name Edisto in each book title.

A huge number of book sales takes place through the Edisto Bookstore on Edisto Island. Tourists arrive each and every weekend, stereotypically seeking a good beach read. They gravitate toward the island’s name, often purchasing the entire series with a desire to entrench themselves into this paradise as deeply as they can. And I credit my publisher for that decision.

The Dying part of Dying on Edisto has its own origin, though. Indigo Plantation is the new bed and breakfast in this story. The owners are trying to rejuvenate the indigo plant, feeding the trend toward more natural living through natural dyes, as well as educate visitors on the pre-Civil War history of the island. So in a slight tongue-in-cheek manner, we gave a nod to the word Dyeing while likewise recognizing the murder mystery.

What’s something interesting that happened to you?

I own this question. Years back, I was still working the day job with the US Department of Agriculture. Yes….my degree is in agriculture, totally non-author-like. From Clemson University, no less. (Can we say National Championship? Go Tigers!) My family is about all things orange, but I digress.

I used to help with financial assistance for farmers. In comes a client who pulled me aside and whispered in my ear, “There’s ten thousand dollars in it for you if you get me that track of land near me.”

I jerked up. “Say what?” This farmer had been my client for five years. He was a bit squirelly, but still, he was a client. And he’d just offered me a bribe. I didn’t believe him, so he repeated it. He had a reputation of dealing drugs, so the offer bothered me. He just might mean it!

So like a good federal employee, I called in the Inspector General. You see, you can’t call your boss, or tell your coworkers, or even call the cops. You have to call what’s in essence the FBI of your agency. After a phone interview, then an agent visiting my home to interrogate me, we spent two weeks setting up a sting operation in my office. . . pretending the two men were auditors from Atlanta just looking over files.

After nerve-wracking days of rehearsing scripts, recording conversations and filming meets, the guy never came across with the money, and the US Attorney chose not to prosecute. But 18 months later, I married the federal agent. (Smile)

We are still married to this day, and he’s the best technical advisor a mystery author could ever have. When it comes time to edit my books, we sit on the back porch, overlooking the lake, and over two bourbons, I read to him. While I catch grammar mistakes, he tells me which gun, how to sneak up on someone, and how far a bullet would knock someone back before they went down.

A match made in heaven.

C. Hope Clark, Author

C. HOPE CLARK has a fascination with the mystery genre and is author of
the Carolina Slade Mystery Series as well as the Edisto Island
Mysteries, both set in her home state of South Carolina. In her
previous federal life, she performed administrative investigations
and married the agent she met on a bribery investigation. She enjoys
nothing more than editing her books on the back porch with him,
overlooking the lake, with bourbons in hand. She can be found either
on the banks of Lake Murray or Edisto Beach with one or two
dachshunds in her lap. Hope is also editor of the award-winning

“Sometimes you just want to slap people. Then you remember Karma hits twice as hard.” Unknown

Fancy scrolled through her phone and stopped when she saw the BREAKING NEWS headlines.

FORMER SENIOR PASTOR OF HOLY ROCK MINISTRIES
ARRESTED ON FELONY EMBEZZLEMENT….

She read the article over and over, not believing Hezekiah had been carted off to jail. Yes, she and her sons had discussed this. Part of her knew this day was forthcoming, but to actually read it, see it in black and white, made her feel some type of way. She got ready to call Khalil but stopped abruptly when she heard Winston coming out of the bathroom.

Walking over to her with a white towel covering his intimate parts, his body glistened from having been underneath the streaming jets of water.

Dang, this man is sexy. Full lips, strong chin, cheek muscles that stood out when he clenched his jaw. Fancy eyed him with desire in her eyes as he approached her and stood in front of her.

He came close, looking down at her intensely, before leaning down, and kissing her as she sat on the edge of the firm bed. “I wish I could have persuaded you to join me. I would have made it worth your while,” he teased as he planted delicate kisses along her face, neck, and earlobes.

For a minute, Fancy forgot all about Hezekiah and his woes and allowed her mind and body to react to Winston’s touch.

Your son is calling. The special ringtone pulled her back to reality before she could respond to Winston. Gently, she eased Winston back and answered it.

“Ma, did you hear? They got the dirty dog,” Khalil said without saying hello. She could hear the satisfaction filtering through his voice.

“I know; I just saw it on my phone. I…I don’t know what to say.”

Winston looked down at her and listened, trying to decipher as much as he could about what Khalil could be saying. George had already contacted him and told him what had happened so he wasn’t surprised if that was what Khalil was calling his mother about.

“What do you mean you don’t know what to say? The man has gone down and it’s not over. It’s just beginning. Payback is a mutha, Ma. It’s time he pays the piper. Know what I mean?”

“Yes, I hear you but it’s still your father and my husband.”

“Hold up, he is not your husband. You are divorced, Ma. And last I heard and saw for myself, you already got somebody to take his place. As for him being my father, yeah, he’s my father by blood, but what’s blood got to do with it? Apparently nothing, ‘cause look at the way he’s dissed me and Xavier. The man is ruthless, so don’t go soft on me now, Ma.”

“Yes, I hear ya, son. Anyway, I just need a minute. I’ll call you back later. Okay?”

“Uh, okay, but you gonna be all right? I wasn’t expecting you to sound like you just buried the guy or something. Everything'll be a’ite. You hear me?”

“Yes, sweetheart, I hear you. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Okay, bye, Ma.” The call ended and with tears in her eyes, Fancy looked up at Winston.

“What is it, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“It’s Hezekiah.”

“Is he all right? Did something happen? Another stroke?”

Fancy shook her head. “No, he’s been arrested. It’s been in the making for some time, but now that it’s actually happened I…I don’t know how I’m feeling,” she admitted, wringing her hands and bowing her head.

Winston reached down, gathered her by her forearms, pulled her up against his taut body, and held her tightly as she rested her head against his chest. “The man was your husband until a few weeks ago. You have history together, children together. It’s normal to have mixed emotions about his arrest.”

Fancy looked up at Winston. “Thank you, Winston.”

“I’m here for you. In any way I can. I hope you know that.”

Fancy nodded her approval and laid her head back against his chest as he tightened his arms around her. She needed to feel safe, protected, and secure. Winston made her feel all of the above.

Winston’s mind was a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts. He had not admitted to himself until now his growing feelings for Fancy McCoy. She reminded him of his ex, Josselyn. He and Josselyn had been engaged for less than six months when she, out of the blue, called off the engagement, saying she wasn’t ready to get married after all. Winston was heartbroken. When she accepted his proposal of marriage it was like a dream had become a reality. It was heartbreaking for him to see her weeks later with another man when they were supposed to spend their lives together, but life had offered a cruel blow.

The caveat in the whole break up was when Winston received a promotion on his job that would require him to relocate to Memphis. After ending things the way she did, Winston couldn’t wait to leave town and start anew.

His mind was not on meeting anyone else. Instead, his intentions were to make a mark in his new position in Memphis and continue to move up the corporate ladder. But his chance encounter with Fancy revealed just how small of a world it is.

Not exactly a guy with a stellar reputation behind closed doors, it didn’t take much prodding from his longtime friend, George Reeves, when Winston told him about the hot woman he’d met at Brother Juniper’s restaurant. George asked Winston to tell him more about the woman who seemed to have temporarily gotten his mind off Josselyn.

George broke out into raucous laughter when Winston told him the woman’s name was Fancy McCoy. How much better could things get?

George gave Winston some background on Fancy McCoy and her husband, Hezekiah. He didn’t want his friend getting sucked in by the likes of any one with the last name ‘McCoy’, but it could possibly work for George the more he thought about it.

Listening to George run down a quick history about the McCoy’s and Holy Rock made Winston that more enthralled and eager to get to know more about this striking mystery woman he’d met.

As for George, the more he gave thought to Winston’s encounter with Fancy, the more he convinced himself this was divine intervention. Why else, of all the women he could have met, Winston met Fancy McCoy? From there, a plan began to circulate in his mind. If he could convince Winston to woo Fancy McCoy, and if she liked Winston, then Winston could keep his eyes and ears open for any shenanigans she and her crooked sons might have up their sleeves toward Hezekiah, and possibly toward George too. In return for his spying, George would only need to convince Winston he could enjoy the pleasure of having a knock off like Fancy to mess with since he’d made the move to Memphis and didn’t know a lot of people.

If George was able to get the inside scoop on Fancy’s plans, the less he would have to worry about his money train being cut off by Hezekiah. George figured it would be a win-win for both him and Winston. Of course, he’d break off a little money to Winston from time to time, not that Winston needed it. The man enjoyed a lucrative career and money was the least of his worries.

After some prodding, with a bit of reluctance mixed with curiosity, Winston agreed to get to know Fancy better. Anything Winston heard or saw that he believed might be helpful in their pursuit of the money George told Winston Hezekiah’s son had stolen from his dad, Winston was supposed to let George know.

What took Winston by surprise was his feelings. He didn’t expect to develop the strong attraction he had toward Fancy, but he did. She was easy to like, made him laugh, and definitely made him forget about Josselyn breaking his heart. But was it enough to make him back off doing what he had agreed? He tried not to think about that but every time he thought about telling George he wasn’t on board with the plan anymore he remembered how he had been walked over by Josselyn, and he knew he could not fully trust Fancy. Thus, his loyalty remained with George.

“Look, everything will be fine. You’re going to be fine,” Winston assured Fancy. To see how much she was affected by Hezekiah’s arrest told Winston a lot. Fancy still loved her husband. What a fool this Hezekiah guy is. It also told him something else—to keep his heart in check because her feelings certainly didn’t lie with him.
