COUNTERFEIT LADY SERIES BY VICTORIA THOMPSON

By Caroline Clemmons

Don’t you love reading a good series? Certainly I do, and that’s what I’ve been doing. A couple of months ago, I started Victoria Thompson’s latest series, A Counterfeit Lady, by reading the first in the series, CITY OF LIES. I fell in love with the characters. So much that I’ve just finished the fifth book in the series, CITY OF SHADOWS. The series is set in 1918 New York.

I highly recommend this series! I'd read many of the author's Gaslight series and loved her writing. The heroine of the Counterfeit Lady series is Elizabeth Miles, daughter of a superb con man. In fact, all her family and friends are con artists. Not the pickpocket, cheap scam type. They target the greedy with ill-gotten wealth, for whom there is never enough money. Elizabeth’s father, who is the head of the group, never intended for her to become involved. Instead, he intended her to be a lady, as was her mother. Her fellow cons call her “Countess” because of her regal bearing and perfect manners.

In CITY OF LIES, book one, Elizabeth Miles assumes many roles in life, as do most women. Unlike most, hers have made her a woman on the run. Living on the edge of society, Elizabeth uses her guile to relieve so-called respectable men of their ill-gotten gains. But brutal and greedy entrepreneur Oscar Thornton is out for blood. He’s lost a great deal of money and is not going to forgive a woman for outwitting him. With his thugs hot on her trail, Elizabeth seizes the moment to blend in with a group of women who have an agenda of their own.

She never expects to like or understand these privileged women, but she soon comes to respect their intentions, forming an unlikely bond with the wealthy matriarch of the group whose son, Gideon, is the rarest of species—an honest man and lawyer in a dishonest world. Elizabeth knows she’s playing a risky game, and her deception could be revealed at any moment, possibly even by sharp-eyed Gideon. Nor has she been forgotten by Thornton, who’s biding his time, waiting to strike. Elizabeth must draw on her wits and every last ounce of courage she possesses to keep her new life from being cut short by this vicious shadow from her.

In book two, CITY OF SECRETS, Elizabeth Miles knows that honesty isn’t always the best policy when it comes to finding justice. She’s discovered that navigating the rules of high society is the biggest con of all. She knows she can play the game, but so far, her only success is Priscilla Knight, a dedicated young suffragist recently widowed for the second time. Priscilla stands to lost everything and Elizabeth is determined not to let that happen. As always, Elizabeth walks a fine line between using her unusual talents and revealing her own scandalous past. Elizabeth soon discovers Priscilla’s husband’s death was anything but accidental and that revealing the truth could threaten much more than Priscilla’s finances.  To save her new friend’s future—and possibly her own—Elizabeth, along with her honest-to-a-fault beau Gideon delve into the sinister secrets someone would kill to keep.

In book three, CITY OF SCOUNDRELS, Elizabeth Miles finds herself in a position no con can help her escape. Her beloved fiancé, Gideon Bates, is awaiting his turn in the draft to fight in the Great War. Elizabeth is finding it hard to think of anything else, but Gideon has thrown himself into his work, preparing wills for soldiers before they ship out. Corporal Tom Preston is part owner of Preston Shoes, a company that is making footwear for the army, so he has a rather large estate. He needs a new will, however, because he has just been secretly married to a woman whom his family would never approve. He wants to make sure she and their unborn child are provided for if he does not return.

When Tom is later reported killed, Elizabeth and Gideon learn that the new will has gone missing after Tom's bride revealed her identity to his family. Unless the new will is found and validated, the original will, which leaves everything to Tom's brother, will prevail and the wife and child will get nothing. If Tom's new bride survives, that is. Some terrible threats have been leveled against her, and Elizabeth and Gideon must figure out a way, legal or not quite, to secure Tom's fortune for his wife and child while saving her life in the process.

In book four, CITY OF SCHEMES, Elizabeth Miles is preparing for her wedding to Gideon Bates, when a menacing shadow from her past threatens to destroy the life she has built for herself in this all-new Counterfeit Lady Novel from USA Today bestselling author Victoria Thompson.

The Great War is over, and Elizabeth and Gideon are busily planning their wedding and welcoming home old friends now discharged from the army. One of them, Captain Logan Carstens, the son and heir of a wealthy family, seems less than happy to be home and with good reason. While Logan was in France, he fell in love with a beautiful French woman named Noelle. He desperately wanted to propose, but he was already engaged and felt bound to honor his commitment.

When Logan receives a letter supposedly from Noelle begging for money to help her flee the terrible conditions in France and come to America, Elizabeth is suspicious. There is no way to verify the letter is actually from Noelle, and she fears that a con man or woman might be trying to take advantage of Logan in his vulnerable state.

But that is not all Elizabeth has to worry about. Vicious thug Oscar Thornton has gotten wind of her wedding announcement and realizes the woman who conned him is still alive and well. Gideon and Elizabeth have to figure out a way to help their friend while making sure their worst enemy does not destroy their future. . . .

In book five, CITY OF SHADOWS, Elizabeth Miles Bates has returned from her honeymoon with Gideon and is taking great pride in having completely forsaken her disreputable past. Then her friend Anna Vanderslice begs her to use her talents to save her widowed mother from an unscrupulous medium. Since the war and the flu epidemic left so many families in mourning, séances have come back into vogue as desperate families long to communicate with their loved ones.

Anna's mother has been attending séances in hopes of connecting with her son, David, who died of influenza. Anna had thought it a heartbreaking but harmless activity, but she's just learned that Mrs. Vanderslice is paying the medium ever-increasing sums of money in her eagerness to make contact. Since David's death has already caused Anna and her mother financial hardship, Mrs. Vanderslice's obsession is in danger of ruining them.

Madame Ophelia is working with a group of con artists to fleece as many grieving New Yorkers as possible before moving on to another city. Several of Mrs. Vanderslice's friends, as well as some of Gideon's clients, have already been victims. Elizabeth knows that simply exposing the medium as a fraud will not be enough to recoup the stolen money; the only way is to con the medium and her cohorts. But will Elizabeth's family help her when it means betraying other con artists? Elizabeth recruits Gideon, her aunt Cybil, and her partner, Zelda, to lend a hand. Can Elizabeth and her gang of amateurs fool the professionals? Or will speaking to the dead lead to deadly consequences?

Each book is a complete story, but they will be much more enjoyable if you begin with the first one. I can practically guarantee you’ll race through the series as I have.

Excerpt

(Hugo is almost four and calls Orlena by the abbreviated Orla)

Hugo held out a drawing with strange markings. “See, Orla. I drew a horse.”

She accepted the scratches he’d made. “I see, Hugo. I had no idea you were an artist. Give me your paint crayon so you can see what Cody has for you.”

Hugo turned to Cody, who’d squatted eye level with him. “I heard about a boy who loves horses. Do you know who that could be?”

Hugo put his hand on his chest. “I do. I love horses.”

Cody untied the string and pulled it from the package before handing it to Hugo. “See if this is something you’d like.”

Hugo quickly peeled away the brown paper to reveal the wooden horse on wheels. His eyes were round as he held the toy with both hands.

“A horse!” He hugged Cody, almost toppling him.

Wearing an odd expression, Cody sat on the floor watching as Hugo dropped beside him and rolled the horse along the braided rug.

Hugo glanced over his shoulder. “Look, Orla, Cody gibbed me a horse.”

“It’s grand. Did you remember the special words?” She suspected the hug meant more than mere words.

Hugo glanced at Cody. “Thank you.” He returned to his play.

Orlena watched him bumping over the rug’s coiled braid. “Your horse will roll more easily if you move off the rug.”

Cody watched the boy also. “Maybe the horse is traveling on hills.”

She sent him what she hoped was a scornful stare. “Thanks for your support.”

He ignored the glare and smiled. “Always happy to be of help.”

“You won’t be so glib when the rug is damaged.”

He lay back on the rug and crossed his arms beneath his head. “You think a child’s horse will ruin it? Ah, well, no matter. My wife will braid another, I’m sure.”

She leaned forward. “Oh, are you? And what makes you think your wife knows how to do such things?”

His bright blue eyes looked at her. Though he grinned, his eyes gave the impression he was serious. “I get the feeling she can do anything she sets her mind to.”

The employee who came to get Gateway stopped short of the hallway, his blue eyes wild with fear. More symbols lined the back of the club where the offices and restrooms were, but once again, there was no time to ask about them.

As soon as we reached the small sitting area outside Gateway’s office, two men were waiting there for him.

They both held guns as they glanced at me, then at Gateway, dropping their heads in the next second as if they had broken some unwritten rule I wasn’t aware of. The whole thing was like a scene from a bad mafia movie.

Gateway immediately shoved me behind him before I could even gasp, but he didn’t let go of my hand.

“Good Evening, Mr. Savoy,” one of the armed men said.

The last thing I wanted to do was distract him, but I instinctively placed my free hand at his back for support to keep from passing out. I didn’t want him to get the wrong idea. I had never been one of those weak, simpering females like so many in horror movies. I didn’t mind a good fight from time to time and I had definitely won my share, but guns were different. They had a strong tendency to give the holder almost 100% advantage, if the holder knew how to use them, that is.

Gateway squeezed my hand in reassurance and for some reason I believed him. I trusted that he had it all under control. Of course, my subconscious was screaming for me to get the hell out of here and stop acting like a damn fool, but I needed to believe him because my feet wouldn’t move and my legs felt wobbly. I really didn’t need the drama right now or ever, for that matter. Hell, I was embarking on a job search the next morning.

“Evening. How can I help you?” Gateway asked as if he didn’t see the guns.

My hand tightened, clutching his back like a security blanket.

“We figured one of your staff would see the urgency of getting your attention,” the man with the gun replied. “What you can do for us is to open your safe.”

The next few seconds were a blur of rapid movement and I was still behind Gateway, so I only caught bits of the action.

Arms moved, mostly Gateway’s and feet scuffled, mostly everyone else’s except for Gateway’s. The scuffling feet were mostly the gunmen’s.

I couldn’t see how he managed to do it, and I’d only managed to do it a few times in self-defense class, but somehow Gateway took the guns from both men and dropped them to the floor. I knew I would never forget the clattering sound they made when they landed on the concrete. I know concrete is supposed to absorb sound, but the guns sounded like thunder in my ears because all of my senses were amped with adrenaline.

Then Gateway finally let me go and stepped away long enough to lift both of the men by their necks and pin them against the wall.

The sound of running water drew my attention to the fact that one of the men was pissing himself.

Both of their faces were masks of horror, eyes huge, mouths open, soundless. They just hung there, all the fight gone out of them in an instant.

I wondered what exactly were they seeing and thinking.

“Look what you made me do. You scared my lady friend, and almost made me lose my temper.”

Gateway sounded dangerously calm to my ears and I couldn’t see his face. Almost? What is he like when he actually loses his temper? “If I ever see either of you again, you’ll end up in the same condition as your weapons, except I’ll make sure to make you suffer first. Understood?”

The men nodded in quick time like bobble heads, unable to speak with Gateway’s hands around their necks.

I slumped against the opposite wall in an attempt to pull myself together. I was probably in shock, but I definitely was mesmerized by the way Gateway had dismantled the would-be robbers.

The minute he released the men and turned to face me, my feeling of relief flew out the window as the thieves ran for one exit and I ran for the other. I wasn’t running from Gateway, but from the whole near-death experience. If not for meeting Gateway, I would have sworn this day had been sent from Hell.

I glanced back like Lott’s wife in the Bible and like her, I immediately regretted it. Unlike the nameless biblical character, I was looking to see if Gateway was following me. A flash of red grabbed my attention and I couldn’t look away.

COVER REVEAL

By Caroline Clemmons

Isn’t this an adorable cover? V. McKevitt of Black Widow Designs created it to perfectly fit my book, DEATH IN THE PERFECT HOUSE. Zoe Wilder works for the local newspaper and writes cozy mysteries. Perhaps because she writes about them, she sees a mystery where there may not be one. She’s been a thorn in the side of the Spencer’s Ridge Sheriff’s Office for several years. But, this time she is positive her friend Margo Kingsley was murdered.

When she is unsuccessful in convincing the investigating officer Margo was murdered, she decides to find the killer herself. Lucky for her (and the sheriff’s department) a new Chief Deputy is hired from Fort Worth, Caleb McBride. He launches an investigation into the death. He also warns Zoe to butt out of his business. Zoe doesn’t intend to take a chance that he’s just going through the motions to appease Margo’s daughter, who’s come from San Francisco.

The killer turns his or her rage toward Zoe. Will the murderer be captured before Zoe is the next victim?

I don’t want to spoil the suspense, but this is the first of the Zoe Wilder cozy mystery series. I have more books planned. This one will launch later this month on February 25th. Check back then for more details!
