The door shut and I turned around to face Russ.

“The pizza is on the table.” He stopped. “What’s wrong?” He didn’t wait for an answer. Instead he came over and put his hands on my shoulder. “You can’t do this nonstop. It’s taking a toll. Maybe I could take you out—there’s a show you’d love...”

“Russ,” I said cutting him off. I would’ve liked nothing better, but that wasn’t going to happen. “I’d love to, but I can’t. I have to be here for Mom.”

He frowned.

“You’re not alone, Cassie. I’ll be there for you every step of the way if you’ll let me.”

“Russ, I can’t ...”

He hauled me against his chest and kissed me. His lips were soft and then hard, hot with passion. Feeling his strength, his heart beat against mine, my breasts rocking against his chest and it was all too much. I wanted him. And nowhere in my life was there room to have him.

When he let me go I just stood there—shell-shocked, my heart pounding in a good way.

“And not just as friends,” he finished. “I want you in my life, Cass.”

“You can’t think of me like that, Russ.” I shook my head. “Like what?”

“In a romantic situation. It’s never going to happen.” And as final as that statement was I knew by the look on Russ’s face and how I felt when I looked at him, that neither of us believed it.

About the Author

The winner of her city’s writing award, Ryshia Kennie’s novels have taken her characters from the depression era prairies in her first book From the Dust to a across the globe and back again. There’s never a lack of places to set a story as the too long prairie winters occasionally find her with travel journal in hand seeking adventure on foreign shores. While facing off a Monitor Lizard before breakfast or running through the Kasbah chased by an enraged Water Carrier aren’t normal travel experiences and might never find a place in one of her stories, they do make great travel stories. When not collecting odd memories from around the world, she’s writing mainly romantic suspense and women’s fiction.

LOVE CALLS YOU HOME

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Donna will award a $25 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn commenter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

LOVE CALLS YOU HOME

By

Donna Simonetta
Stephanie Williams left skid marks on the road out of Willow Springs, Vermont after she finished high school. She didn't return until her company sent her to evaluate the town for a massive development project. Back then she thought the town was way too small and too cold. Now the cold isn't as much of an issue since she's reconnected with her childhood friend, Donald Flanagan. Stephanie doesn't remember his eyes being quite so green, or his body quite so built. He's smart and funny as he ever was, and a forest-fire sized attraction burns between them.

Donald never understood his old friend's driving need to leave Willow Springs. He loves everything about it. When he learns the truth about Stephanie's project, and how it will turn his hometown into a theme-park version of itself, will it extinguish the flame that has sparked between them?

Read an Excerpt

Whenever she was ready. That was a joke. Stephanie wasn’t sure she’d ever be ready. She stood at the door to his apartment and crinkled the white paper bag she held in one hand and swiped her other hand’s sweaty palm on her white jeans. It had been years since she’d been this nervous about eating dinner with a man, and it was dinner with Donald Flanagan, for God’s sake! Her nerdy, childhood friend. There was no reason to be nervous with him. Except, he’d grown up and filled out, and was one fine looking man now, in addition to still being the smart, funny, nice guy he had always been. As a matter of fact, he’d become the perfect man. Not to mention, somewhere along the way he’d learned to kiss like an alpha male dream––all in control and powerful––Stephanie grew weak in the knees at just the memory of their kiss last night in Finnigan’s parking lot.

About the Author

Donna Simonetta writes the kind of books she loves to read--contemporary romances filled with heart, heat, and humor, like the books of her favorite romance writers, Susan Mallery and Jill Shalvis.
.
A Sweeter Spot is the first book in the Rivers Bend trilogy, which is set in a fictional small town, populated by quirky characters. But if you prefer a big city setting and a little fantasy mixed in with your romance, try Angels Fly. A heartwarming story, set in beautiful San Diego, about getting a second-chance with your first love, with a little help from some unlikely guardian angels.

Writing is Donna's third career. She has worked in the business world, which she decided wasn't for her. So she went back to school to get her MLS degree, and worked in a school library, before deciding to pursue writing on a full-time basis. Donna lives in Maryland with her husband, who is her real-life romance hero. They enjoy traveling to visit far-flung family and friends, and spending time on the beach with an umbrella drink and a good book.

THE FORTRESS

Don't miss the Rafflecopter at the end of the post!

The Fortress
by Madeleine Romeyer Dherbey

GENRE: WWII Historical

THE FORTRESS Blurb:

The war has not made much of difference in Alix’s life. Her father has seen to it that she grows up unaware, unworried, but safe in her tiny village under the cliffs of the Vercors. All around her he has built a fortress whose walls are impregnable—until the 27th of April, 1944. That day he makes a stupid mistake up on the cliff, and the walls of the Fortress start crashing down. Reality breaks into Alix’s life with unrelenting violence, unforeseen possibilities. From now on, every decision she makes will mean life or death.

EXTRA INFORMATION:

Inspiration behind the book--

First of all, the Vercors Mountains. Breathtakingly beautiful, dangerous, natural playground for all extreme sport lovers. Rock climbing, canyoning, spelunking, skiing, it's all there. But for me, it's home. It's where my ancestors have lived and are buried under those same cliffs.

Then, the history. The Vercors is a dream of freedom, a heroic battle, a military disaster, but also redemptive last stand. Many military and history books have been written on the subject, but no fiction accounts, and in fact, I was frustrated by the dryness of the accounts which I felt did not reflect the human dimension of that battle.

Finally, my own family history. Three of my uncles were condemned to death for collaborating with the Vichy government and betraying C2, a Resistance camp, to the Nazis. Their sentences were later commuted to forced labor, but the national disgrace verdict stood, and they had to leave the area to avoid being murdered. Despite the death threats, my father— who had fought with honor during the war—decided to stay. The legacy was hard to overcome in a community mauled by four years of occupation and violence, and seventy years later, my last name remains associated with the destruction of the Maquis of Malleval.

There are also small things, like a Sten machine gun I found in the mud of a summer creek, with this inscription, Pour ma Suzon Cherie, June 12, 1944; or the story of a fifteen-year old boy, a resistant fighter whose name is forgotten, who was tortured and murdered by the Nazis in the summer of 1944.

And finally, Russel Crowe, naturally.

Interview with Madeleine  Romeyer Dherbey

--Favorite author/genre

Väinö Linna, Under the Northern Star, a trilogy. It’s a story of hard work, loyalty, forgiveness, and amazing courage during the ferocious civil war in Finland. Read it. Akseli Koskela will show you what a real man looks like.

I read classic literature, historical novels preferably, and History. I speak French, German, and Spanish in addition to English, and like to read novels in the original language. It’s gives me more insight into the author’s original intent. Currently I’m reading Das Parfum, by Patrick Süskind, and Jerusalem, by Montefiore.

--Favorite quote

What’s on my license plate, LIFAD, the acronym for Leben ist fur alle da. Life is for everyone here. Choose life.

--How long have you been writing?

Nine years? It takes me forever. I set no deadlines, no word-count goals, lest it become a chore. I either get a beer, put on some Finnish Death metal, Insomnium, for example, and settle somewhere where I am not alone in the house, or I go for a long walk on the Appalachian trail—which is barely two miles away—with my dog, Mikko, which helps me put things together. I used to have to be absolutely alone to draft, but not anymore. First, I like the kids’ chatter, the disruptions, and I like taking my time. Writing is part of life, not a substitute. I hand-write, then I type.

--Plotter or pantser

Both, really. The first time the Pantser thing happened, I was amazed. It felt like magic. The legendary muse, as my agent once said. I thought he was out of his mind. Sure, the muse visits once in a while, but it’s mostly hard work. Shock Top helps a lot, too, one and a half, no more, and Finnish metal music. My favorite bands are Ghost Brigade, Insomnium, Wolfheart, and Swallow The sun. It’s as vast and brilliant as a Beethoven Symphony, thunderous but melodic, the perfect emotional outlet. And then, frozen expanses, Nordic lakes, white forests, it’s land’s end, after all.

--What am I working on now

A novel centered around the federal entrapment of a young teacher. I have been teaching for 13 years, and have a deep emotional connection with my special education students. And it’s political! Expressing political opinion in school is forbidden—really forbidden. Besides, the likes of me are pretty much underground. We recognize each other like Christians in Rome, with a glance and a rolling of the eyes. So being able to write the ins and outs of oppression in the public schools world, coupled with a the building of a fake terror plot by a branch of the federal government no one in their right mind should trust, was a bit of a catharsis for me. You will love it or hate it, depending on your allegiances, and who cares? It’s not meant to be commercial.

--long-term plans for my career

I’m going to keep teaching and keep writing. They balance each other.

--Advice to unpublished authors

Discard any idea that worms itself into the narrative because it might help sell the book. No gratuitous sex, no gratuitous violence, no easy, voyeuristic scene that is devoid of purpose. If you sacrifice pleasure and dignity for commercial gain, you will get neither.

--Share something that would shock readers

While I have reinvented myself as a dedicated wife and mother, a passionate teacher of students with severe and multiple disabilities, who relaxes with gardening and hiking with the dogs, I was pretty much the opposite until mid-life. People are invariably surprised about my death metal taste, of course, and I can read the disbelief on their face when I tell them I travelled through the Kheiber Pass with Taliban fighters (I didn’t know who they were, I swear!), or went to a Voodoo ceremony in Haiti (the driver got possessed, it was awesome).

For the rest, I dare not say. The novel I could write, had I not become Christian thanks to my husband, would be banned from public libraries.

THE FORTRESS Excerpt:

THE FORTRESS Excerpt
This is the part when marc pays a midnight visit to Alix to confront her about drowning a Nazi officer—without his authorization.
“Is that mint?” Marc asked. “At home, we mix it up with heather and those little blue flowers. I think they were called…”
“I only like mint.”
“Nothing wrong with mint.” He waited for her to say something else, something that would ease the tension he felt in the room, but she remained silent. She must be a little shaken, he thought. That’s understandable. “Were you able to get rid of the body?” he asked gently.
“Yes. Why are you here?”
He went up to the little window and lit a cigarette before answering. There was no mistaking the animosity in her tone. I have to fix her fuck-up, and she’s angry? At me? He sucked the smoke deeply into his lungs. “You know exactly why I’m here. What you did today will impact—and possibly kill—many people. It will help if we don’t argue about it.”
“You’re the one who’s mad. I can see it.”
“I’m not very happy, but that’s not the point.”
“Don’t you ever sleep at night?”
“Not much. It’s easier to hike in the dark. You can’t see the incline, you can always pretend that it’s flat. What about you? Having nightmares?”
“Not at all,” she lied. “I would do it again.”
“Ah. The Ice Fairy. I remember.” He could feel a headache coming. “Next time I have a hit job, I’ll make sure to ask you first. At least you’re not wasting bullets.” He had gone to the hidden phone and was checking its functioning as he spoke. “What’s your next project? Anyone in mind?”
“Maybe,” she shrugged. “Do you want to know who it is?”

No, not really, he thought. He couldn’t ease the suspicion that he might be on her revenge list. She had once said that she didn’t hate him, but who could trust her? Maybe she had planned something terrible, like cooking him in the sawmill kiln. He almost made a joke of it, and thought better. She never understood his jokes, anyway. “You owe me an explanation,” he said instead. “I don’t remember asking you to murder a Nazi officer. You want to tell me why you didn’t discuss it with me?”

GUMSHOE GIRL -- FUN NEW COZY SERIES DEBUTS

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Andi will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

GUMSHOE GIRL Synopsis:
Sheagan O’Hare got more than she bargained for when her newly inherited detective agency lands its first case; a missing person, embezzlement, and murder. Sheagan’s out to prove she can hang with the pro's, despite the constant reminder of her amateur status from an annoyingly attractive FBI agent, Colin 'Mac' MacEvine, who’s forced himself into her life.

How does she feel when an old high school friend hopes to ignite a new romance?

Will she be able to discover if detective work and love can mingle before someone gets hurt?

Read a GUMSHOE GIRL excerpt:

As she shifted her weight, the metal walls started to reverberate and Sheagan stifled a gasp, willing the rumbling to cease. Her breathing became labored as the musty air stole the aroma of the sweet perfume wafting up waft from the suite below. She stilled her movements and did the only thing she could think of… nothing. Nothing but stare at the heap of blankets and wait.

Come on, bimbo, come up for air. I know he doesn’t last that long.

Her discomfort increased as the noise from their passion became more intense.

Ugh, that’s it, I’ve had it!

She mashed her cheek and upper body against the grate.

I just need a peek to confirm.

She pressed harder, ogling the bed. Finally, she caught a tiny glimpse.

Just a little further.

She pushed and heard a chirring sound, then a scraping. She froze in place, but the grate gave way with a creaking groan and crashed to the ground. Time stood still as Sheagan realized there was nothing between her and the floor except air.

INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL BRIMBLE!

If I Want You

by Rachel Brimble

GENRE: Romantic Suspense

IF I WANT YOU Blurb:

When local journalist, Tori Peterson, fails to prevent a child abduction outside her niece’s school, her horror and guilt sparks a vow to do whatever it takes to get little Abby Brady home to her parents.

While Tori battles the vile memories of her own kidnapping as a child, she accepts the help of widowed father, Mark Bolton. As he and Tori join forces with the local police, their attraction and intimacy grows…along with their fears for Abby.

Links are uncovered between Abby’s disappearance and Tori’s kidnapping, and Tori is forced to accept the monster who held her captive is back. But this time, Tori is all grown up, and there is no way she will let him hurt another little girl.

IF I WANT YOU Excerpt:

It wasn’t the just the smell of fresh air and sandalwood that alerted Tori to the fact Mark had joined them. It was the way his shadow fell over her as though covering her body with his wide, deep and potentially dangerous protectiveness.

She didn’t bother to look at him...even though her Cally was seriously looking. Tori lifted her hand in a half-hearted wave. “Take a seat, superhero.”

“I will.” He sat beside her. “Thank you.”

Every now and then, when she was alone at home, she’d picked up a book. And every now and then, Tori would toss the book across the room whenever she read the words, “the air crackled between them.” Well, whatever instantly plagued the atmosphere between her and Mark as she forced her gaze to his, she was loath to call it crackling. Maybe humming… screaming… burning… but definitely not crackling.

She swallowed. “What are you doing here?”

“Olivia’s staying at a friend’s. I was at a loose end.”

Despite her best efforts to fight her smile, it was ruthless and broke through her barriers like they were made of sugar paper. “Loose end, my ass. You were no doubt pacing around the house and doing everything you could not to get in the car and go get her.”

He smiled and put a glass on the table. “Merlot, right?”

INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL BRIMBLE

Rachel, please tell us about growing up. Siblings? Locale?

I grew up in the outskirts of the British maritime city of Bristol. I lived with my parents, older brother and much-loved Norwegian Buhund called Butch, who I’ll never forget as he was my first dog. I now live in a small town close to the famous Georgian city of Bath with my husband of nineteen years and our two teenage daughters. My constant companion and latest dog is a chocolate Labrador called Tyler – unfortunately, I lost my beloved Maxie (a black Lab) in 2015.

Tyler

As a kid, I was very much a tomboy and loved nothing more than playing in the fields, climbing rocks and trees and generally getting dirty. My mum used to despair of me whenever we had to dress up and I had to expose my bruised and cut knees beneath the hem of a dress I hated wearing, lol! These days, I’d say I’m somewhere in between tomboy and grown woman. I still live in jeans and flats day to day, but also love to dress up in dresses and high heels. A balance has been found!

Brimble Family

When I’m not working, I love spending time with family and friends – spending far too much walking for miles only to stop in a country pub for lunch and not leave until hours later, lol! I’m also a keen knitter and TV watcher. The two go hand-in-hand as I can’t do one without the other.

Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

My favorite authors are Nora Roberts, Jill Shalvis, Philippa Gregory and Alex Grecian – I read a lot of romantic suspense, mainstream romance, historical (including biographies of past British kings and queens) and crime. I am a voracious reader with (I imagine!) a collection of over 400 books spread throughout my house…including the attic.

How long have you been writing?

I used to write stories as a child and bind them with ribbon, but stopped around ten or eleven and didn’t start again for many years. When I decided I wanted to write for a career around 2000, I started with short stories and articles and was thrilled when my work started to be published. It wasn’t until 2005 and both my daughters were in school that I embarked on my first novel. The Wild Rose Press published SEARCHING FOR SOPHIE in 2007 and the rest is history!

Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?

I am lucky enough to have a home office which I absolutely love – I work on a laptop on a huge white desk with two corkboards on the wall in front of me. On one board is the book I’m writing, and on the other is usually for the one I’m plotting – I concentrate on the one I’m writing most of the time, but use the plotting board for anything that comes to mind so it’s there when I come to work on the next book.

When I’m writing, I need complete silence but can work with background noise…usually my daughters…when I’m editing or working on promotion, interviews etc.

Are you a plotter or a panzer?

A total plotter! I start each book by searching the internet for pics of my hero, heroine and villain if I have one – I then complete character sketches for each. The sketches usually reveal the main characters’ goals, motivations and conflicts. I then write a chapter plan detailing a summary of the action and any significant character development. With that done, it’s (usually) fairly easy to write a 3-4 page synopsis.

Then the writing starts! I usually write the first draft from start to finish without looking back – the hard part comes with battling the initial draft into some sort of shape during the following drafts.

Do you do your research before you begin a new project, or as you go along?

With my contemporary books, I tend to research any questions that come up as I go along. For my romantic suspense, I have a fabulous police detective contact who I use A LOT when I have investigative procedures etc. to check on. My daughter is currently at university studying policing, so hopefully I’ll soon have a police contact under the same roof which will be fabulous!
For my historical work, I tend to do quite a bit of research around the issue I’m tackling and/or the setting at the time the book is taking place before I begin writing. Anything else that comes up, I tackle as and when, usually making use of my vast collection of reference books, the internet or local library.

Tell us about your writing schedule. Do you set goals? Do you write daily?

I am lucky enough to write full-time with one day off a week when I visit my parents – the rest of the week I treat my writing as I would any other job and work from 8.30am to 5.30pm with two dog walks and a short lunch break in between. The weekends are strictly reserved for family and/or friends unless I have a deadline looming.

My usual daily word goal is around 2,000 words, if I’m not editing or promoting a new release.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise readers.

How about a couple of things?? One, is that my family and I were rescued by helicopter from a hotel roof during the 2010 French floods and the other is…I haven’t had my hair professionally cut since my wedding day in 1998. It’s so curly, I can get away with my husband or one of my daughters giving it a quick trim with the kitchen scissors!

I remember the story of your rescue. What an exciting and frightening event! What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

Ooh, great question! I suppose I like to think, as I write romance, that it brings them escapism and hope in a world that is looking ever more hopeless and scary. In addition to that, I hope I bring positive thoughts, laughter and belief that there’s someone out there for everyone.

What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

Write, write and write some more! Practice is key – also enroll in some affordable online courses. This was how I started, and they were invaluable in teaching me the technical side of writing. Find courses on point of view, setting, characterization etc. and apply everything you learn. Also, read. A lot…and not just in the genre you want to write.

Finally, when you begin writing a book, commit to finishing it until the very end. A lot of aspiring writers start project after project and never finish a piece of work. Lastly, the best piece of advice I EVER received was ‘give yourself permission to write a crappy first draft’. This changed my output beyond belief!

You can always edit it later ☺

INTERVIEW WITH M PEPPER LANGLINAIS PLUS INFO ON HER NEW BOOK!

M Pepper Langlinais will be awarding a $15 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter during the tour.

Welcome to A Writer’s Life, Ms. Langlinais. I'm eager to learn more about BRYNNDE, but first thank you for consenting to an interview. Readers like to know more about authors whose books they read.

Please tell us about growing up.

I grew up an only child in a small town just north of Austin, Texas. (It’s a much bigger town now.) We moved after fifth grade to the area outside of Dallas, but I went back to Austin for college.

I don’t know if I was shy, but I kept a very small circle of friends as a kid. I was definitely odd, and there were a limited number of people who were willing to engage with that. I was nuts for television and movies, and me and my friends played games based on our favorite television shows and films. Like, I had a friend who would play Moonlighting with me. Remember that show? Now you know how old I am. Anyway, I always had to be David.

Much, much later in life I found a man also willing to take on the bundle of weird that is me. We’ve been married almost sixteen years now and have three human children and three fur babies. We name all our pets after literary characters: our hamster is Thomasina (from Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia), and our cats are Crowley (from Good Omens) and Professor Minerva McGonagall (from Harry Potter).

M in a weird mood

I love your pets’ names—makes me wonder about the names of your children. ☺Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

Oh, it’s changed over time. I go in cycles. As a kid I loved Judy Blume and Zilpha Keatley Snyder. I also read all the animal books, loved those. Later I would work my way through Michael Crichton and John Grisham. Dean R. Koontz and eventually graduated to Stephen King. Went through an Anne Rice phase, too, and Neil Gaiman.

I still read Stephen King on occasion, and I’ll even pick up a Neil Gaiman book now and then, but my favorites most recently are Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad series and Ben Aaronovitch’s Peter Grant books. I also really like historical fiction by authors like Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory.

I think I’ve read all of Philippa Gregory’s books. Now I’ll check out Tana French and Ben Aaronovitch’s books. When you’re not writing, what’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?

Well, I read, and I like to take walks. We have good places around our house for walking. I also enjoy reading tarot cards and astrology charts just for fun.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing down stories when I was nine or so. We moved away, as I mentioned, from where I’d grown up and I would write stories and send them to my best friend. So I guess I’ve been writing in one form or another for about thirty years now.

Where do you prefer to write?

I have a home office that is known as “Little London” because of the Anglophilic décor. I have to have quiet while writing, and I can’t have anyone else in the house at all. Even with a noise machine going, just knowing others are around dampens my ability to focus. I’ve decided if we ever move, we’ll need to get a place where I can have my own little writing cottage separate from the house.

M's "Little London" office
I use a laptop (MacBook Air) though I keep a notebook at hand because sometimes when figuring out plot points I need to make a little flowchart for myself of what’s going on and where it’s leading.

Our family are anglophiles but my office is pink and referred to as "the pink cave". Are you a plotter or a panzer?

Isn’t a Panzer a German tank? Seriously, though, I tend to just start writing and, as I noted above, pause to work things out as I go along. I can’t outline, but I will plan a step or two ahead, and I always have a general sense of where things are going and where they will end up.

Do you do your research before you begin a new project, or as you go along?

As I go. I do it all as I go. Otherwise I get so engrossed in the research I never actually write.

I know about those research rabbit holes! Tell us about your writing schedule. Do you set goals? Do you write daily?

I try to set deadlines for myself, but life sometimes gets in the way. I’d like to say I write daily, but it isn’t true. I do try to write at least every other day and contain my errands and appointments to just a couple days a week as well. So: Here is a writing day, and the next day is the day for shopping and such. That way I’m not interrupting my writing time and can focus. I cannot concentrate if I know I’m going to have to stop and do some chore or go somewhere.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise readers.

I won’t eat meat off a bone? And I dislike poultry. Both these traits run in my family, actually. I can only eat chicken or turkey if it’s covered in so much sauce and seasoning I can’t actually taste it. Even the smell of turkey cooking can make my dad sick to his stomach. We always eat ham at holidays.

The smell of turkey roasting makes me nauseated, too. What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

Pleasure. I hope readers fall in love with my characters as much as I do while writing them.

What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

(1)   Always get feedback. Don’t write something and just publish it without some kind of feedback first. Join a critique group or find beta readers online—something. At the same time, be sure the people giving you feedback are worth listening to. Joe Schmo may have a very loud opinion but does he know what he’s talking about? When getting that necessary feedback, always consider the source.
(2)   Research the agents and publishers you’re considering submitting to. Absolute Write is a great source for this. Read the comments on Query Tracker, too. Not all agents and publishers are created equal, and it’s worse to have a bad agent or publisher than none at all.
(3)   Don’t rush. Send queries in small batches, and don’t query agents and publishers at the same time. Decide which you’d rather have. If all the agents say no, start again with small publishers. Or if you want to self-publish, then be sure you’ve done all your research on that as well, and make sure your manuscript is sparkling before you send it anywhere—agent, publisher, or Amazon, Smashwords, etc.
(4)   If you are self-publishing, don’t make your own cover. Unless you’re already a book design expert, just don’t. Pay for a good designer. It’s so worth it to put a beautiful cover on your book.

Excellent advice.  Tell us about your latest release.

Brynnde is a Regency romance in the vein of the old Signet and Zebra lines. I used to love those. It’s a sweet, clean romance about a young woman in search of a suitor in order to avoid having to marry an elderly neighbor. She thinks she’s solved her problem when the handsome and witty Garrick proposes to her, but then their engagement is ended when Garrick’s younger brother causes a scandal.

GENRE:   Regency romance

BRYNNDE Blurb:

Brynnde Archambault seems able to find matches for everyone but herself. With the help of the handsome and witty Viscount Burbridge, she manages to get his sisters, her brother, and a family friend paired off. But if she doesn't find a match for herself soon, she may be stuck with dull Mr. Dallweather. Can she find a suitor--or has the right match been staring her in the face all along?

BRYNNDE Excerpt:

After supper Brynnde had a break in the stream of dance partners, and she took advantage of it by stepping outside for some air. The spring night was cool and slightly damp; it smelled of grass and dark earth. Brynnde inhaled it deeply and wished once again she could go for a walk, alone and away from the pressing heat of the party.

She was checking her dance card to see if perhaps she had enough time for a short stroll in the garden when Mr. Dallweather appeared. “Miss Archambault,” he said, taking her hand rather abruptly, and Brynnde only just managed to keep from snatching it back. She didn’t want to hurt the poor old gentleman’s feelings after all.

“Is it time for our dance?” she asked, unable now to check her card.

“I’m hoping we have a lifetime of dances ahead of us,” said Mr. Dallweather. “Miss Archambault—”

“There you are!” a voice sounded from behind the columns at the far end of the house. Brynnde turned just in time to see Garrick Sommerford step out of the shadows. “Miss Archambault, I believe this is our dance.”

Bewildered, Brynnde started to say it was not, that he’d asked for the waltz, but Garrick went on, “But you do look fatigued. Let’s get you inside, out of the chill, and put some punch in you, shall we? Dallweather,” he added with a nod at the older man. Mr. Dallweather gave a stiff nod in return.

“That wasn’t very nice of you,” said Brynnde as Garrick ushered her inside. “Stealing Mr. Dallweather’s dance. I thought you wanted the waltz.”

“I did and I do,” said Garrick amiably. “I also wanted to save you both the embarrassment of him declaring himself to you.”

Brynnde gasped audibly. “That’s ridiculous!”

“That he planned to propose? Or that I wanted to stop him?”
