Passing the front desk on my way to the elevator, I wanted to avoid eye contact with any of the clerks on duty. But, like Lot’s wife, I couldn’t resist just a peek. Unfortunately, one of the check-in clerks, an older woman with gray hair pulled back into a tight bun, happened to be looking in my direction and our eyes met.

The woman immediately called to me, “Miss, would you please step over here?”

I returned a mimed “Who, me?” gesture. The bun lady nodded in the affirmative.

Damn, that’s all I need, I berated myself. I just had to look, didn’t I? But I knew I now had no choice but to comply. I walked over slowly as I tried frantically to think of answers, having no idea what the questions might be. Would I be asked who I was and what I was doing here? If so, would my answers be credible? When I reached the desk I tried to act nonchalant.

“Yes, ma’am?”

The bun lady said, “Just a moment, please,” and reached under the desk.

Totally irrationally it flashed through my mind that the woman was going to pull out a pistol and place me under arrest. Good thing I’d just peed, or I’d probably have done it now. It’s amazing what tricks a guilty conscience can play on you. What she actually pulled out, however, was a stack of letters. She handed them to me and, motioning toward a mail box mounted on the far wall, said, “Would you be a dear and drop these in the box over there?”

I accepted the letters and the assignment with relief. “Certainly, ma’am. No problem.”

I marched directly over to the mail box and deposited the letters. I then continued on my way to the service elevator, this time resisting any urge to look anywhere but straight ahead.

Taken captive in a Comanche raid, terrified Marissa Williams awaits her fate alone in a tipi. Wind Ryder enters his tipi to find the chief’s gift of the blond beauty. Once a captive himself, Wind Ryder understands her fear. How can he protect his terrified prisoner from the other men in the village who see her as nothing more than an object for their pleasure?

Excerpt

As the villagers gathered to watch Wind Ryder break the wild stallion, Marissa knew this was her only chance to escape. It would be dangerous, but she had to try. She moved to the back of the crowd without drawing attention to herself. Her heart beat wildly as she imagined herself free from the Comanche at last.

Wind Ryder smiled confidently. He reached down and patted the proud horse’s lathered neck as cheers arose from those watching. Dismounting, he handed the reins to another warrior and went to speak with his father and Black Eagle. He looked around as they spoke and realized Shining Spirit was gone. Knowing how badly she wanted to escape, he went to look for her without a word to the other men.

Marissa tried not to get too excited as she stayed along the bank of the stream where the foliage was the heaviest. The terrain grew rockier, and she was glad. It made her trail harder to follow. She rushed on, thinking only of being reunited with her family.

And then the fierce warrior Bear Claw appeared before her. She tried to get away, but he grabbed her and brutally threw her to the ground.

“My father should never have given you to Wind Ryder,” he snarled, groping her.

Marissa fought as violently as she could to escape. This was her greatest terror. Thoughts of Wind Ryder came to her. Her warrior hadn’t abused her. She desperately searched the ground beside her and grabbed a rock, swinging it at him. Her blow caught him alongside his head and he viciously hit her.

“You will pay for that!”

Wind Ryder found her tracks near the stream and realized there was another set of tracks covering hers—tracks that belonged to a man. The realization that he was worried about her startled him. Just the thought that someone might harm her infuriated him. A vision of his golden captive played in his mind.

The sound of a distant cry came to him and he charged forward. The scene he came upon put him in a mindless rage. Wind Ryder threw himself at Bear Claw and knocked him away from Shining Spirit.

“She is mine! You do not take what is mine!”

Mer Harbor is a small, coastal town in Southern California. Everyone knows everyone, and nothing is a secret among Mer Harbor residents. Some hope to escape someday, while others find the charm of the town enticing, and never leave.

Everley Romero and Heath Mitchell had always planned to take on the world together. To leave Mer Harbor and pursue their dreams. It all seems to crumble when a tragic loss sends them in different directions.

Almost ten years later, Everley finds herself on the receiving end of a bitter divorce, leaving her no choice but to return to the home - and past - she'd hoped to leave behind for good.

Heath is building a good life for himself in Mer Harbor. When he crosses paths with Everley, he learns that they'll both have to face a past full of heartbreak and loss that they've both tried to bury.

EXCERPT

“Why the hell did you even bother?” Benny was shouting again, this being what seemed like their millionth fight this week. “It's obvious you don't love me, so why didn't you just stay in Mer Harbor?”

“I do love you!” she shouted back, “I don't know how else I'm supposed to prove it to you!”

“Get over him!”

“Screw you!”

It was always the same argument, and it happened every year around her daughter's birthday. Why couldn't he see her sadness was about the child she’d lost and not his high school rival?

Running away had been a mistake, but Mer Harbor had become so suffocating that she saw no other option. Besides, she usually had fun with Benny. How could she have predicted he'd forever be jealous of a relationship that had ended years ago?

“Six years, Everley,” he started up again. “It's been six damn years and he hasn't come looking. He doesn't care about you anymore.”

She knew he wasn't looking, and she knew exactly where he was. Heath had returned to Mer Harbor shortly after she left, and he wouldn't look for her, because he hated her.

Mistake or not, she was determined to make what she had with Benny work. She owed him that much. “What do you want from me?”

“Be with me,” his expression softened, and he stopped shouting, “and I mean really be with me. Stop putting it off and marry me.”

Telling stories before she could even write, Christina Ann Gist grew up knowing she wanted to be an author. She “published” her first stories with construction paper and handwritten pages for her family and friends. Now, with the magic of technology, she’s able to share her characters and stories with the world.

When she’s not writing, you can find her dabbling in her other favorite hobbies such as photography, stargazing, and of course: looking for her next adventure.

A deceptively complicated retrieval throws Nicole into London's criminal underworld

Travel to London and retrieve Abigail Fletcher, a 17-year-old in a study abroad program at the prestigious King’s College in London. The assignment sounds simple enough.

But Abigail’s return is put on indefinite hold when she’s charged with the murder of her boyfriend, a former student at King’s. Nicole believes Abigail has been framed, but the victim’s tight- knit circle of friends and relatives are most unwilling to talk to an American detective. Further complicating the case, is Abigail’s defiant and uncooperative demeanor.

As evidence stacks up against Abigail, Nicole discovers that she herself has become the next target. Nicole’s first solo case abroad as a private detective has just turned a lot deadlier than she ever anticipated.

“I knew him when I was little”—he pronounced it lit-ull— “in primary school. That’s a long time back, innit? He was a year older.” He gave a self-deprecating smile. “I thought he was a good bloke ‘cause he stuck up for me when the bullies were beatin’ on me. But later…"

"Later? What happened then?”

The young man shrugged, closing the door more so he was peeking through a slit.

“Anybody who talks about it…” He shook his head and shut the door.

His hands on her shoulders were warm and pleasantly heavy. His lips were surprisingly soft. The feel of them against her own was just heavenly. She thought standing this close to him, having him touch her like this might make her panic, but he did nothing to frighten her. For such a hard man, she was amazed he could be so gentle. He coaxed and smoothed his lips over hers, cajoling a response from her.

He tasted like apple pie. He smelled like the world out-of-doors—fresh, clean, and wild. Hesitantly, she kissed him back. She wondered if her relative inexperience showed. Somehow she had a feeling Nathaniel Dawson had kissed plenty of women in his time. Deciding she ought to do something bold, she reached her hands up and placed them on the top of his shoulders. She discovered instantly that they were hard and broad, the material of his worn shirt soft beneath her fingers. He was so big and male and vital, he made her head swim.

His lips left hers. She stood absolutely still as he kissed her cheekbones, her eyebrows, the line of her jaw. It was the most wonderful sensation. When he kissed the skin beneath the base of her ear, he sent little shivers racing down her spine. She could feel the roughness of the stubble on his cheek against her own, and she gloried in the sensation.

About the Author

Anna DeForest wrote her first book-length piece of fiction in fifth grade. She taught history at the Colorado Heritage Center and a Denver private school. She was thrilled when Leisure Books bought her first historical romance, Golden Dreams. She was actually watching Sesame Street with her four-year-old when she received the good news call from her agent, but she managed to tear herself away from Big Bird long enough to listen to the terms of her new contract.

Growing up in Colorado gave Anna a lifelong taste for outdoor activities such as hiking, riding and skiing. She also enjoys gardening, which is currently quite a challenge because armadillos keep rooting around in her garden in Dallas.

Anna has always tried to write the kind of romances she likes to read—stories about warm, caring people who pursue their lives and loves with passion. These days, Anna is excited about offering four of her previously published romances to her new readers, along with three romances that have never been published before. WHAT WE BURY BY CAROLYN ARNOLD

What We Bury
 by
 Carolyn Arnold
GENRE: Mystery/Thriller

She’s dying, and she knows it. If only she can stay alive long enough to leave one last message. As the rain beats against the metal roof, she uses her blood-soaked fingertip to scrawl on the floorboards...

The letters GB

Detective Madison Knight has been house hunting, but a call from her real estate agent has nothing to do with finding the perfect property. She’s found a woman’s body, stabbed multiple times. Madison arrives on scene and is presented with an unknown Jane Doe and two letters written in blood. There’s no murder weapon, and it seems Doe was attacked somewhere else. As

Madison works to find justice for the victim, Madison’s own life is put at risk. What she comes to discover is some people will go to extreme lengths to protect their secrets—even as far as murder. But will learning that lesson come too late for her?

Buy this international bestselling book today and join the investigation! Uncover clues, follow leads, and catch a cop killer like thousands of readers have done before you.

Readers may be interested to know what inspired Carolyn Arnold to write What We Bury (Detective Madison Knight Series) and what they can expect from this latest instalment in the international bestselling series. Well, Carolyn sat down and answered these questions and more. She even gave us some excerpts from the book, giving us a true inside look. If you’re not familiar with Carolyn’s work, she is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has four continuing fiction series—Detective Madison Knight, Brandon Fisher FBI, McKinley Mysteries, and Matthew Connor Adventures—and has written over thirty books. She’s even getting ready to announce a fifth series starring Detective Amanda Steele. Her genre diversity offers her readers everything from cozy to hard-boiled mysteries, and thrillers to action adventures.

Carolyn’s intention is to touch the hearts of millions with her books, to entertain, inspire, and empower. She currently lives near London, Ontario, with her husband and beagles and is a member of Crime Writers of Canada and Sisters in Crime. So, without any further delay, let’s get this interview started.

What inspired you to write What We Bury
Detective Madison Knight came to me years ago and demanded that I tell her stories. I was obliged for at least a couple reasons. One, she was a unique and compelling character. Two, the world was in need of bad-ass female leads. Regarding this particular story, What We Bury, it’s the tenth instalment in the Detective Madison Knight series and picks up a few weeks after Shades of Justice. Don’t worry if you haven’t read all the previous books in the series because they do stand alone. But just like with any series—literature or TV—you will get a deeper appreciation for the characters and underlying plots if you start from the beginning.

The idea for the murder in What We Bury originated because my husband and I were house hunting last year. And with Madison Knight and her boyfriend Troy looking for a new home, I thought what if their real estate agent finds a body while preparing for an open house?

What can readers expect?
Murder. Investigation. The pursuit of justice. That’s the series’ tagline, but what else I’ll tell you is that in this crazy world, we all need an escape. We need to be entertained more than ever, we need characters and stories that pull us in, and we need humor. What We Bury checks all those boxes. I’ve written a murder mystery that’s both serious and complex while at the same time has laugh-out-loud moments and comical banter. (They say when the author feels something, the reader does. I actually laughed to tears at some of the interactions! 😊 Others I cried, but no spoiler alerts here!)
Here’s one passage where I laughed out loud. If you know Madison at all, even if you don’t, I’ll let you know she can be a little dry and to the point. In the following excerpt taken from Chapter 17 of What We Bury, Madison and Terry believe this guy named Carl Long is a link to their person of interest in the murder investigation they’re working. They show up at his door and this happens.

The excerpt picks up where Madison is feeling deceived and says… “You want to go back to jail? Keep lying to my face.”
His eyes met hers, his mouth twitched, and he spun and flew out the door.
“Ah, shit!” She flailed her hands in the air. She hated it when they ran. The damn devil’s pastime.

Terry was already down the front steps and to the sidewalk, well on his way to catching Carl Long. Might as well let her partner nab the guy. He’s the one who loved running, after all. She stepped out to the stoop and tapped a foot.

And later in that chapter, Madison’s questioning this Carl guy (who has a record).
This excerpt starts with Madison asking … “You’re sure you don’t know that man?”
Long sniffed and didn’t look back at the photo. “Never seen him before.”
 “Uh-huh.”
“I don’t care if you don’t believe me.”
“You should. That is unless you like the three squares a day at Mitchell County Prison. They must be tasty.”
“Fine, I might know him,” he mumbled.
“I didn’t quite catch that.” Madison angled her head and cupped her ear.
“I know him,” Long repeated loud and clear.

What is your writing process? Do you outline diligently or write more in the flow, organically?
I wish I could outline meticulously like some of my fellow authors, but I’m an organic writer. The most of an outline I can hope for is a bullet-point synopsis, but even then, my characters are usually far too impatient to wait for me to lay much of anything out in advance. I love writing in the flow, though, because I really find that’s where the magic happens! For example, I know Madison needs to question someone. I might not have a clue what they’re going to tell me, but after I write the scene Madison often walks away with amazing revelations and leads in the case.

What scene, if any, surprised you the most with this book?
There were a few, but the most shocking event happens about mid-way—but I can’t reveal it without providing a spoiler! Let’s just say that it took both me and Madison by complete surprise.

What was your biggest challenge with writing this book?
Fitting all the elements into the plot that I wanted without over-complicating it. Madison has a murder to solve, but she also had a side mission to take down corrupt cops and the Russian Mafia that operates in her city of Stiles. I also wanted to make sure that anyone could pick up the book and understand the plot without having read previous instalments in the series.

Does Madison have any addictions? So often strong detectives are depicted in literature as being alcoholics and independent.

Oh, she’s certainly independent—or at least she claims to be! She’s gotten rather “attached” to her boyfriend Troy, though, as readers will find out in this book. As for addictions, she loves a glass of red, but she’d kill for a Hershey’s chocolate bar. 😊

Tell us a bit more what Madison is like.
She’s wired to find justice, no matter the cost. It probably stems from the fact that her grandfather, who was a cop, was gunned down just after his retirement. The shooter was put away, but that wasn’t enough to satisfy Madison’s sense of justice. Not entirely. She knew the origin of the shooter tied back to the Russian Mafia that’s still active in Stiles. Combine that with the fact Madison never got to meet her grandfather but was close to her grandmother and a personal drive was born. She’s also the type of detective who doesn’t want to refer to the murdered as victims but prefers to call them by name.

She hated to think of the murdered as victims, detesting the assignment of a label to a once-living individual, loved by people.

Madison is also very much into listening to her instinct and gut feelings about things. It’s something that can drive her on-the-job partner Terry crazy.

“Where are we going?” Terry caught up and kept pace with her.
“We’re going to find out where she was stabbed.”
“Based on your gut?”
“You know it.”

She’s usually always in a hurry because she gets focused, like a train on tracks. She’s definitely the type that tosses her jacket on the back of the chair and discards trash in her car. In the following snippet from What We Bury, Madison’s looking into what they believe is their Jane Doe’s car and talking with Terry.

Madison cupped her eyes and squinted into the sedan’s driver’s-side window. It was immaculately kept. No dust on the dash or garbage within sight. It was possible Doe was the type who stuffed crap under her seat, though. Madison went around the car, repeating the process.
“Wow, she keeps this thing clean.”
“Not everyone treats their car like a garbage bin on four wheels.”
“In your words, hardy-har. I’m too busy to—”
“An excuse. Everyone’s busy.”
She’d defend herself, but he was right. She had a horrible habit of tossing trash over her shoulder into the back seat. She wasn’t quite as bad as she used to be because it drove Troy mad.

Madison will also defend her chocolate addiction to her on-the-job partner Terry as many times as it takes!
“Are you really eating a chocolate bar for dinner?”
She laughed. Terry, her food monitor. “I’m not sure why that would surprise you.” They’d been partners going on eight years, and for that length of time, she’d always had a chocolate—more specifically, a Hershey’s—addiction.
“I was hoping we’d stop somewhere, hit a drive-thru on the way to the ex-husband’s—”
“Because that’s so much healthier.” She mumbled, “Vegetable,” just before taking another bite of heaven.
“If that’s what you have to tell yourself to soothe your conscience.”
She scowled at him while her mouth was full of gooey milk chocolate. “Ymm,” she moaned and closed her eyes.
“You really have a problem. You know that?”
“Whatev—” She chomped on another chunk. “Ymm.”
Terry shook his head. “While you masticate that bar like a—”
She stopped chewing, her glare daring him to finish his sentence.

She’s not a real fan of exercise.
Her partner Terry says… “Come on, be real here, Maddy. If I didn’t know you better, I’d say you just wanted to go for a walk.”
“Here’s what I’m thinking…” She ignored his jab. So what? She wasn’t a fan of exercise; a lot of people weren’t.

All fun! What can you tell us about the case Madison works in What We Bury?
The body of a forty-something woman is found stabbed in a shed—no ID, no personal belongings, no sign of the murder weapon, but there are the letters GB written in blood. AND the actual scene of the crime is unknown because it quickly becomes evident the woman didn’t get attacked where she was found. So Madison needs to find her identity, the initial crime scene, unravel the mystery of “GB,” and find means, motive, and opportunity. But while she’s doing all that, she’s also determined to ferret out corrupt cops in the Stiles Police Department and bring the Mafia down. (Wish her luck! She’ll need it!)
Enjoy this little teaser from Chapter 1:
“She’s dead.” Those two words brought Madison Knight to 982 Hillcrest Drive in the middle of a Saturday afternoon in March. It was a quiet neighborhood in the south end of Stiles, a city of about three hundred sixty thousand, and it had been her real estate agent, Estelle Robins, who’d called. When Madison saw the name on caller ID, she’d assumed Estelle had found the perfect place for Madison and her boyfriend, Troy Matthews. Boy, had she been mistaken.

Madison parked in the driveway, admiring the raised bungalow with its grayish-brown brick and beige siding. It couldn’t be older than fifteen years. The front door was under a small overhang, and that’s where Estelle was standing, her arms wrapped around herself as if she were cold, but the temperature today was unusually warm. Some of the more northern states would envy their spring-like weather in early March. Madison got out of the car and approached Estelle. She was normally the picture of calm and put-togetherness, but her hair was frizzed around her heart-shaped face, and her eyes were wet and wide. Her brown eyeshadow was smudged beneath her right eye, but her mascara had stayed in place.

“Omigod, Madison. I didn’t know who else to call, but you’ll know what to do.”
“You did the right thing.” Madison was a Major Crimes detective with the Stiles Police Department. Troy could have tagged along, as he was also a detective for the department, but his primary role was leader of a SWAT team. Solving murders was her thing.
“Where is she?”
“In the shed. I’ll take you there.” Estelle led the way to a side gate next to the garage. Her hand was shaking as she worked the latch.
Madison followed Estelle down a concrete sidewalk toward the backyard. “How did you find her?” “There’s supposed to be an open house.” Estelle spoke over her shoulder. “I was making sure the property looked good.” Estelle stopped and hoisted a chain-link gate at the end of the walk that was hinged on the fence and wedged against the brick of the garage. To the right was a deck, and ahead was a manageable yard. The rear of the lot was framed by mature cedars and a chain-link fence. There was another gate back there, and it appeared open.
Estelle pointed to a shed with a concrete foundation and beige siding. It was about twelve feet wide and twenty feet long.
“She’s in there.” Estelle shivered. “I can’t believe this is happening.”

She wants a baby…he wants a family

Firefighter and paramedic Tierney Ashton has always been a bold adventurer, but at thirty-four she longs to embark on a new adventure—motherhood. But who will be the father? Although financially challenging, a sperm bank appears to be her best option. That is, until she shares her dream with her long-time pal, Brendan Flaherty.

Government analyst and world traveler Brendan Flaherty returns home to River’s Edge to help out at his family’s thriving winery and his brother’s new community theater. He also plans to finally achieve his lifelong goal of writing a novel. But when Tierney shares her wish, Bren offers to be her baby daddy—with one condition. Marriage.

It seems like a perfect contract, but will love get in the way?

Three texts from Bren—he’d heard about the fire—wondering if she was okay. He was moving into his cabin; did she want to come up to the winery and help him celebrate. And, hey, it was almost midnight, where was she?

She smiled. Good old Brendan Flaherty. Her buddy had returned home from Washington, DC, nearly a year and a half ago. It was good to have him back in River’s Edge. He’d been her older brother, Mike’s, best friend since elementary school and had always treated her like his own little sister. He’d stepped right in as surrogate big brother when Mike died in Afghanistan fifteen years ago, and the two of them had helped each other through the grief. She treasured their friendship, especially now that Bren was home to stay.

Her eyes went to the photo on the mantle above the fireplace in the living room—Mike and Bren on their bikes with her sitting on Mike’s cross bar, his arm around her skinny form. The boys had been in seventh grade in the picture and at eight years old, Tierney had worshipped her older brother, although she’d always found his best buddy a little geeky. Actually, both Mike and Bren had been kind of nerdy—into computer games and science experiments and exploring the caves down by the Ohio River.

Bren was still geeky, but in the nicest way possible. He still made a point of looking after Tierney, even though at thirty-four, she was quite capable of taking care of herself. She went into the kitchen, refilled her coffee mug, and retrieved the box of marshmallow cereal from the pantry. Plopping back down at the table, she ate fingersful of dry cereal directly from the box while she texted Holly to let her know she’d be there at three and then Bren to reassure him that she was fine and would love to come out to the winery to celebrate his new digs.

To prove her father’s innocent of treason, she’ll have to face a killer--and risk everything ...

When journalist Jessie Kegan’s father is accused of espionage and treason, Jessie has no doubt the man she looked up to her entire life is innocent. Worse yet, before Colonel Kegan can stand trial, he’s found dead of a heart attack…but Jessie knows it was murder. Forcing down her grief, she’s determined to use her investigative skills and resources to clear her father’s name. But going after the truth means Jessie soon finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who wants that truth to stay buried with her father.

Protecting Jessie Kegan is a job bodyguard Brandon Garrett can’t refuse. Jessie isn’t just a client at Maximum Security—she’s the sister of his best friend, Danny, killed in Afghanistan. With dangerous forces gunning for Jessie from every angle, keeping her safe will mean keeping her close and Bran finds their mutual attraction growing, though being Danny’s sister puts Jessie out of bounds.

With their backs against the wall, Jessie and Bran will have to risk everything to expose her father’s killer—before his legacy dies with his daughter.

Lounging back in the chair behind his desk at Maximum Security, Brandon Garrett looked up at the sound of the front door swinging open. A gust of cool, late October winds swept in, along with a petite, whirlwind of a woman with the prettiest strawberry blond hair Bran had ever seen.

It wasn’t tough to read the anxiety in her big green eyes as she surveyed the room, but instead of heading for the receptionist’s desk, those big green eyes landed on Bran and as she started toward him, there was something about her that rang a distant bell. Interest piqued, he rose from his chair. “Can I help you?”

“You’re Brandon Garrett, right? You were a friend of my brother’s. Danny Kegan? I recognize you from the photos Danny sent home.”

The mention of his best friend’s name hit him like a blow, and the muscles across his stomach clenched. Daniel Kegan had been a member of his spec ops team, a brother, not just a friend. Danny had saved Bran’s life at the cost of his own. He was KIA in Afghanistan.

Bran stared down at the girl, who was maybe five-foot-four. “You’re Jessie,” he said, remembering the younger sister Daniel Kegan had talked so much about. “You look like him. Same color hair and eyes.”

She nervously wet her lips, which were plump and pink and fit her delicate features perfectly.

“My brother said if I ever needed help, I should come to you. He said you’d help me no matter what.” She glanced back toward the door and his mind shifted away from the physical jolt he felt as he looked at her to the worry in her eyes.

“I’ll help you. Danny was my closest friend. Whatever you need, I’ll help. Come on. Let’s go into the conference room and you can tell me what’s going on.” When her gaze shot back to the door, his senses went on alert.

“I didn’t mean I needed your help later,” Jessie said nervously. “I meant I need your help right now.”

Gunshots exploded through the windows. “Get down!” Bran shouted to the other guys in the office as he shoved Jessie down behind his desk and covered her with his body. Glass shattered and a stream of bullets sprayed across the room.

MADAM IN SILK

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Gini Grossenbacher will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

San Francisco,1849. Despite her objections, twenty-year-old Ah Toy and her servant Chen voyage from China to San Francisco with her husband who dies on board ship. With little cash and bound feet, how is she to find employment in the Gold Rush town?
Since she is the only Chinese woman there, she opens a "Lookee Shop," catering to miners who pay in gold dust to see her exotic beauty. As her notoriety grows, so does her attraction to the devoted policeman, John Clark. Yet should she put her faith in one man? Will their love survive despite her frightening encounter with Sydney Ducks, threats from rival madam Li Fan, and a tempting offer from Henry Conrad who promises her wealth and security?
Armed with her mystical beliefs of the inner dragon and Goddess Mazu, Ah Toy faces much more than the journey from the ancient ways in China to the new world in America. In fact, she must find the true source of courage in a life or death struggle for her own fate, justice, and dignity. Based on page-turning accounts about the life of Ah Toy, one of San Francisco's most legendary madams.

Clark fondled his hat brim. “Tell me which shop, and I shall go find her.”

Chen clenched his teeth. “I think that is not a good idea,” he said.

Clark frowned. “Forever why not?”

Chen fell silent. . . .

Clark’s face reddened. “Chen, are you hiding something? Out with it, my man. Why would it not be a good idea?” He looked up at the ceiling, then let out a heavy sigh. . . .

Ah peered through the crack in the door. Chen was probably wondering if he should tell Clark the truth—or not. She watched him gaze at Clark whose lips pressed flat.

Then Chen broke Ah Toy’s rules for servants—again. . . . “I will face great trouble from my mistress for telling you this. You can never tell her how you learned this information.”

Clark leaned forward, sliding his chair closer. “Of course, Chen, your secret is safe with me.”

“She is to be married. She is out shopping for a wedding garment.”

Clark blinked rapidly. Was he trying not to show his surprise?

She held her breath for a moment. A debate raged inside of her: if she went to Clark, here and now, as she was sorely tempted, her risk was great. After his wife’s loss, Clark had already drifted away from her to New York. How could such a man be trusted?

Clark stiffened; his knuckles white around the rim of his hat. “She is going to wed?”

ON THE 18th OF MAY

Don't forget the Rafflecopter at the end of the post!

An Interview With Jordan R. Samuels

Please tell us about growing up. Siblings? Locale?

I grew up in a small town near Charlotte, North Carolina, named Dallas, with a lovely family consisting of sweet parents, two daughters and a son. I was the middle child – so you know what they say about the middle kids! It was a lovely area with fish fries and barbeques and flea markets on Saturdays!

Were you the shy kid or the tomboy? Married, single? Children? Share anything that lets readers get to know the real you.

I was definitely a tomboy growing up, but once I went off to college, I discovered how many other interests I had. I have been married for over thirty years to a man I first met when I was twenty-four years old. I have three children that are my world – they are wonderful kids and I realized, as they started growing, what a blessing it is to have sweet children who bring nothing but joy to every day of your life. I am a retired public school educator, having spent thirty years of my life as a classroom teacher (science!), an assistant principal, a principal, and a district office administrator. I loved all of this work, but my favorite role was that of an elementary school principal. I still run into grown adults who tell me I was their principal – when they were in first grade! During that time, I went back to school and obtained my Masters degree, and then my Doctorate. After my career in public education ended, I transitioned to higher education, where I currently enjoy my work as a university professor!

When you’re not writing, what’s your favorite way to relax and recharge? Hobbies?

I love exercising, especially taking long walks or shorter runs through the lovely trails and parks that surround my home here in North Carolina. I also enjoy reading, although sometimes I have trouble finding books that will really hold my interest. I love easy yet captivating romances. I want the feeling of not being able to put a book down, but I don’t want to have to work too hard to understand what is happening in the story.

How long have you been writing?

I have been writing, on the academic level, for eleven years. Starting with my dissertation, and then followed by numerous published academic journal articles, chapters in books, and even published books on research (one that was just published in January!), I have been writing for quite a while. However, I believe your question may have been “how long have I been writing NOVELS?” On the Eighteenth of May was my first novel ever, and it was published in March of 2020, so I have been “writing” fiction for a little over a year!

Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?

I prefer to write in the early mornings and the evenings. I head to my local McDonald’s with laptop in hand, order a large coffee and write for about an hour. Then, in the evening, I repeat the process on my back deck overlooking a lake (although I do substitute wine for the coffee in that case). I try to limit my writing sessions to about an hour at a time. And then I take walks afterwards to process and reflect on how my writing could be better.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Definitely a plotter! If I don’t have many of the details planned out ahead of time, I have a sinking feeling I am going to mess the whole story up!

Tell us about your writing schedule. Do you set goals? Do you write daily?

Because I also have tons of writing that must be done for my job (academic and research for the university) I feel it important to carve out special time for my fiction writing. So, usually, I plan out pockets of days or weeks that I am in between research articles to work on my novels. For example, currently I am writing a chapter for a research book on the online teaching and learning transitions during the COVID-19 pandemic. But, I already know that I will be done with that writing in another few days. So, at that point, I will resume my daily work on my next novel, The Broken Bridge. Once I do get opportunities to work on my fictional pieces, my goal is to write one VERY ROUGH DRAFT chapter each day, although sometimes, with particularly challenging chapters, this process will last over several days.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise readers.

Even though I am 55-years old, I like to challenge myself both mentally and physically. Just last week I did a virtual half-marathon. I am trying to teach myself Spanish using a virtual language program. I asked a neighbor to borrow her keyboard and I am trying to learn how to play the piano. I am constantly looking for things to do that will stretch my mind and my body in ways they haven’t been stretched before!

What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

I perceive myself to be a perfectionist, yet in the first publication of my first novel, when I finally held it in my hand, I found that there were so many things about it that I didn’t think had been done well. Even though I had read and re-read and re-read again, there were so many things I missed. I then went through the painstaking process of re-publishing with a better version. So my advice would be, when you are reading back over it (and this is a thrilling and exciting time), take your time and be careful!

What has helped you in your writing career?

Getting help from all of the smart people around me! For example, the title of my book was going to be a different configuration of the date – May 18th – but I reached out to a fellow professor in the English department and he suggested that the current title flowed better. I got other advice from family members, professional colleagues, etc., on plot points, descriptions, and even who to include in the story (like my little dog, Sammy!). I found that people were excited for me as I engaged in this adventure of writing a novel, and they were happy to give me feedback and ideas!

What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

I have heard from many readers that On the Eighteenth of May conjures up many emotions, including pathways to healing. While the story is a sad one, I believe that many readers can relate to just how difficult it is when dealing with issues of family, abandonment, and loss. I hope my writing will help people as they consider their own journeys in loss and healing, or their own support of others who are experiencing loss. Finally, I hope my writing provides a little peaceful getaway for those who enjoy the sweet but sad love story featured in On the Eighteenth of May. I think many readers will relate to just how much trust is needed, from both ends of the relationship, for this particular romance to even exist.

Tell us about your latest release.

On the Eighteenth of May is my new release, having been published in March of this year. Currently, Amazon is out of stock of the paperback but the Kindle version is ready to go! Walmart, Books a Million, and Barnes and Noble have plenty of paperbacks available as well as the e-books. Being a new author, I am thrilled to see that across all of these four, in reading the reviews, I currently have over 30 five-star ratings – and nothing below a five!

BLURB

On the evening of the eighteenth of May, a young woman named Cass walks alone into a small village with the intent to stay for exactly one year. Cass soon meets two precocious children, a caring and generous business owner, and the Chief of Police from the neighboring town. Family and loss are parts of many of their stories, and while these people, as well as others, attempt to know and help her, the history and troubled memories of what led Cass to this place begin to gradually unfold. As the potential for love and the pathway for healing become clearer, the date of departure approaches. Cass and those around her will be forced to decide how forcefully they are willing to hold on: to the past, to the pain, and to the person.

On the Eighteenth of May is the story of the people and events that are interwoven throughout Cass’s journey and her life. It is a story that examines the true test of strength in the deepest depths of sorrow, as felt by the human heart. It is a story that explores the perceived helplessness of those within the support structure, and the extent to which those we love can hinder or accelerate the healing process. Finally, it is a story that reminds us of the overwhelming power of comforting influences in all of our lives, as our human souls struggle, against all odds, to survive.

EXCERPT

Lucas reached the competition area and put on a cheerful grin, giving every outward appearance that he had waited all day just for this opportunity. Farley was already at the starting line with a Velcro leg wrap in hand, ready for his partner to join him and sporting a silly smile across his face.

As the other racers gathered around their respective lanes, Farley and Lucas sized up the competition. Most were teens and children, but there were also a few serious-looking adult pairs, all of whom appeared to be sizing up the two police officers as the team to beat.

If only they knew, thought Lucas with a muted chuckle. He and his deputy had come in last place last year as they had attempted this endeavor. Apparently they both had two left feet and a general lack of coordination to boot.

Farley secured the Velcro strap tightly around their lower legs, Lucas’s right and Farley’s left. The two stood side by side at the start line, waiting for the other teams to ready themselves in the same fashion. It appeared the race may be starting in a minute or two.

Lucas heard Farley’s phone ding with a text alert, then watched as his friend read it. Farley’s smile disappeared, replaced by a look of concern. Suddenly, Farley was crouched, unlatching the Velcro strap and readying to depart.

“Sorry, Luke, Kaley just called. Austin fell coming off the bouncy slide and busted his lip. He’s pitchin’ a fit and she needs my help.” Farley finished disconnecting his leg from Lucas’s leg, dropped the Velcro to the ground, and anxiously jogged away towards the children’s play area.

The megaphone announcer was readying the competitors now. “All teams to the line, please. I’ll count down from three to one, then listen for the horn as your start signal.”

Lucas watched as the other pairs approached the line where he now stood alone. He looked down at his right leg where the Velcro strap lay. He started to bend down to retrieve it so he could move aside and out of the way, when suddenly he saw another leg appear beside his. A person was crouched down, securing a left leg to his right one, pulling the Velcro tight and fastening the hooks.

The megaphone announcer shouted, “Three!”

The person was standing upright now, looking straight ahead towards the finish line. Lucas, however, was looking at the side of her face. He felt her left arm reach around his waist, felt her hand as it clasped onto his shirt.

“Two…,” the announcer called. The spectators appeared fully enthralled with the drama of the countdown.

She was silent, looking straight ahead, and now, he too, looked straight ahead and readied himself for the race. Without thinking, his right arm reached up and over her shoulders, found her waist, and settled there in a loose embrace of her shirt and skin underneath.

The announcer yelled, “One!”

Cass turned her face slightly upward and towards his and whispered softly, “Outside legs first.”
