Under His Skin
by
S.I. Hayes and J. Haney

Genre:
Contemporary Romance with a twist of Suspense

At twenty-six Dorian Gallagher has it all. Money, power, he’s used to
fast cars and faster women. He gets what he wants when he wants it.
Being put in charge of the build for the Gallagher family’s newest
theme park has dropped him in Tennessee. Bored out of his mind he
decides to go get some new ink and finds himself face to face with a
beautiful woman who doesn’t know his famous last name. Can he charm
this dark beauty, or will she just stick him and run?

Charlotte (Charlie) Herrick is a free spirit. She drives a big truck, rides a
motorcycle and carries a gun. All while dancing around in the layers
of tulle that make up her usual cheek baring tutus. Her life was
hers. Until she meets Dorian Gallagher, now she doesn’t know which
way is up and life has become something more than just the shop,
fishin’ and moonshine. He says he’s just here for the year, so
she convinces herself it’s just a fling. Can she stay true to her
convictions or will this Amusement Park Prince finally get his princess?

Ten to five and we’re pulling in to the parking lot of the strip mall that houses The Den. We’re about to make a right hand turn when out of nowhere a cherry red Ford F-450 Superduty cuts in front of us! “Fucking asshole!” I scream as Connor slams the brakes and my shoulder gets pulled. Fuck that shit hurts.

The truck just keeps going like they didn’t even see us. I watch as it parks while Connor is looking for a space. Out hops this tiny brunette wearing a fucking tutu! “What the fuck is wrong with people? Have they all lost their ever lovin’ minds?” I shake my head and Connor just laughs parking us.

“Let’s go Mister Sunshine and rainbows.” He urges me to get out of the SUV and I do, heading straight for the tattoo shop.

Walking inside I look around. It’s well-lit and smells clean. That’s a good start then I look over toward the desk and see the back end of a chick, bent down going through her purse. That wouldn’t be an issue except this chickie well she just so happens to be wearing boots and a tutu.

“Are you fucking serious?” I whisper to Connor who just shrugs and pushes me forward. “Aghem.” I clear my throat annoyed. “You know you should really watch where you put that cherry popper of yours.”

She bounces up to look at me. “Excuse me?” She asks.

“I would, but there’s really no excusing lousy driving. You damn near ran us into the meridian in the parking lot.” I point outside. “Missed hitting us by like a breath.”

She looks around, there are two guys sitting with their feet up in the back. She shrugs. “Oops.”

My blood is beginning to boil when I feel Connor grab my forearm.

“She’s the best in town, do you really want to piss her off and have to go to some mediocre joint down the road?”

I grind my teeth as Connor steps up.

“Charlie, wasn’t it?” He purrs. “We are here for you to work, please excuse Mister Gallagher, he’s a… Passionate man.”

“Let me go grab the sketch and see if that’s what he wants.”

Connor nods and I just stand there with my arms crossed. After a couple minutes, she reappears with a large sheet of paper, on it is my Celtic tree of life with the DNA symbol running through the root structure. I take it from her and examine it.

“Yeah, this works.” I answer back looking her over. Her hair is dark, and obviously long as she has it tied up and it’s falling every which way, Florescent pink strands popping out here and there. Her skin is nicely tanned and her eyes are green. A sharp contrast to the black that lines them. Her lips are painted deep purple which makes the silver ball in her labret pop and her ears are gauged, like mine, only larger, with open tunnels and rings threaded through. She’s cute, and tattooed, all five feet two inches of her.

“Did ya fil out your paper work?”

I reach in to my pocket and pull out the need materials. “Sure did. Now am I paying all upfront or per session? I know different parlors have different policies and I didn’t see the answer to that in the fine print.”

“That depends on you, if you want to pay it all up front, pay upfront; if you want to pay per session, by all means pay per session.”

“Alright, what are we looking at for the total?”

“I’d say based on the coverage, and time it’s going to take, six-fifty even.”

I nod and pull out my wallet, I had figured on a grand or more. Boy was she lowballing. Eh, whatever if she didn’t know what it was worth that’s not my problem, only my gain. I count out the money and hand it to her. “Alright, I’m ready when you are.”

She folds it down, shoving it in her tits and with a wave of her hand motions me toward the back.

SPRING SURPRISE BY CYNTHIA GAIL

SPRING’S SURPRISE
by Cynthia Gail

Sara Michaels is single again. And she's celebrating her thirtieth birthday with a complete spa makeover and a day of boutique shopping with her two best friends. After a ten-month battle for freedom, a long weekend in Nashville, Tennessee is just what she needs to erase the memories of a broken heart.

Jack Tanner is the soon-to-be new partner at Chester & Dorsey Development Firm. Jack's love life has been on the back burner for years as he's built a successful career. But the moment he meets Sara, he takes a hard look at his life and his priorities.

Sara steps out of her comfort zone and spends and unforgettable weekend with Jack. She's never felt so carefree. Until she realizes too late that three days can change everything.

EXCERPT:

Jack was leaning against a post, about halfway between the barn and the porch, when he saw Sara come out of the house.

God, she was gorgeous. Every inch of his body stirred as he watched her approach him in a pair of form-fitting black jeans. She had her hair down and wore a long necklace that hung low on her neck, bringing his eyes to the low cut of her shimmery blue blouse.

If that wasn’t enough to make his blood boil, she was wearing a pair of high-heeled black sandals that showed off her sexy red toenails he’d noticed the previous night.

He felt like a teenager going on his first date. He didn’t know what to say. You’re pretty didn’t seem to do justice, but he hated to be the slobbering fool, constantly telling her how beautiful or amazing she looked. Even though she did.

He wished their situation wasn’t so complicated. He was getting ready to make a huge move in his professional life that would take him farther away from her.

How could life be so cruel, to introduce him to such an amazing woman, the kind he could really see himself falling for, just to say that he couldn’t have her?

Or maybe life wasn’t saying he couldn’t have her. Maybe long distance was just temporary. Maybe . . .

My husband and I live in the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee with our eighteen-year-old son and three dogs. When I’m not working or writing, I can be found with family and friends. I love to bake in the winter, grill in the summer, and on occasion, I sneak away from everyone and curl up with a good book.

I hope you enjoy my stories. Each one touches on modern day issues, fears, and challenges that women face every day. And each one illustrates that love is within reach if you let down those walls and allow your heart to open. Our lives and experiences are so much more meaningful when we have someone to share them with.

BOOK REVIEW OF CHEROKEE WINTER

CHEROKEE WINTER: Tales of the West I
By Troy D. Smith
Western Trail Blazer
Ebook $3.99

If you read this blog often, you know I love, love, love westerns, and I've discovered a new one to love. Troy Smith’s collection of fifteen short stories varies from pioneers to contemporary, but each illustrates why he is an award-winning author. Those stories are:

I. “The Stealing Moon” - After Comanches kill his older brother, Will Rafer struggles to regain his self-esteem and his father’s love until a battle reunites them.  One of my favorite of this collection.
II. “The Purification of Jim Barnes” - a former sniper has trouble fitting back in to his old life until his grandfather takes charge. Another favorite that helps me understand veterans.
III. “God Bless Our Home” - gives a new slant to the life and death of a famed outlaw. Sad, but made me believe this might be insightful.
IV. “Confessions of Little Big Man” - is an interesting look at the introspection of a famous man.
V. “They Day They Got Lance Burns” - Does a reformed outlaw still have to answer for his crimes after twenty years, even if he's lived a model life since?
VI. “Mister Maitlin” - A Colorado adventure begins innocently, but evolves into a masquerade that eventually backfires.
VII. “The Hunter’s Snare” - Civil War soldier Charlie Raymond makes a difficult decision.
VIII. “Sergeant Mann” - excellent excerpt from novel BOUND FOR THE PROMISED LAND. After initial insults, a town shows gratitude to the Buffalo Soldiers who save them from Apaches. One of my favorites.
IX. “Romulus Jones” - An insult to his wife and daughter sets Jones on a course even his best friend cannot curtail. Should he retreat or remain to rein in his friend?
X. “Becoming American” - thought provoking story of Sitting Bull’s time in New York.
XI. “Cherokee Winter” - Tom Spencer loved the mountains of Tennessee and hates to watch them change. His opportunity comes when he guides two surveyors to the East Tennessee Mountains where he meets the Cherokee.
XII. “Casualties” - A Pinkerton agent rescues a kidnapped girl, but the rescue doesn’t go as he planned. Has he become that which he hates?
XIII. “Where the Fire is Never Quenched” - A Civil War soldier helps a friend escape a grass fire after a battle. When does filial devotion end?
XIV. “The Final Nail” - When a man dedicates his life to wreaking vengeance, what happens when that vengeance is complete?
XV. “The Galvanized Yankees of Company D” - Excerpt from the novel of the same name. A heroic band of cavalry officers save a fort. Another of my favorites was very enlightening. I didn’t realize that Confederate prisoners were ever transferred to serve in the Union Army.

CHEROKEE WINTER captured my interest immediately. I have my favorites, as I’ve noted above, but I enjoyed each of the fifteen stories. Troy Smith is a gifted writer who weaves his spell over the reader. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves history, or who just loves a well-written story.
