 Here’s the description:

Sidney Garton, owner of Garton’s Mercantile in Harrigan Springs, Texas, sent for a wife:

“What I hope for is that she cooks our meals and manages the household, but also assists me in the store when needed—which would be quite a bit  of the time.”

Antoinette Fournier must evade her father’s plan to marry her to a terrible man. She’s confined to her room until she agrees to wed the rogue. Her sisters arrange her departure with the matchmaker and help her get away immediately. Antoinette doesn’t have time to read the letter he sent the matchmaker until she is on the train headed for Texas.

Uh oh, she foresees a huge problem. She can’t cook. Her training in managing a household is directing the servants. She’s never worked in her life.

What if he sends her away?

He doesn’t, but what if he resents her forever?

SETTING AS A CHARACTER

 By Caroline Clemmons

One of the enjoyable things about writing is choosing and developing characters. You may not have considered this, but often the setting becomes a character. Many such series and books come to my mind, and I imagine the same is true for you.

Our world is filled with beautiful and awe inspiring places to inspire writers. Some books require a small town in the U.S. that does not have to be identified by state. Another might be set in a large city but need only generic description of the locale. Many may give detailed descriptions of major cities, complete with turns onto various streets.

Most of my books use the setting to advance the plot. For instance, in AN AGENT FOR LYDIA, the Badlands’ Hole in the Wall is crucial to the story. In MURDOCH’S BRIDE, the blizzard that strands the train and passengers could not have occurred in Florida.

So it is with my current series, Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides, set in (obviously) the Texas Hill Country of Central Texas. The gently rolling hills with abundant water made ranching a major industry in the 1800’s. It still is, although land is now being swallowed by developers.

Gentry McRae and his partner are ranchers near the town of Harrigan Springs in the first of the series, GENTRY AND THE MAILORDER BRIDE, Heidi Roth. The story moves into town for the second book about Sheriff Jesse Cameron and his mail order bride, Rosalin Arnold in JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Gentry’s youngest brother takes center stage in QUINN AND THE MAIL ORDER BRDE, Priscilla Bradford. Back in town for book four, runaway bride Maeve’s rescuer is Levi Iverson in LEVIAND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Heiress Elliana seeks refuge in Harrigan Springs with banker Keith Martin in KEITH AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE.

Currently being written is SIDNEY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Sidney Garton has sent for a mail order bride who can cook and keep house and also help him in Garton’s Mercantile. Antoinette Fourier is gorgeous, but she is not at all a bit of a surprise.

I hope you’ll read these books. I’ve loved writing them for you.

LET AUDIBLE READ YOU A STORY!

By Caroline Clemmons

What an exciting age in which we live! We can read by picking up a paper book, read on our e-reader or phone, or plug in our earbuds and listen to someone else read to us.

I’m excited to announce all but five of my books are now available at Audible for your listening pleasure—and I’m working to get those five available on Audible, too.

Many of my friends listen to audiobooks while they commute, others listen while they’re doing onerous chores, and others—like me—listen as they relax at home. Whatever you choose, I hope you’ll give my audiobooks a try!

If you’re new to audiobooks, there’s a FREE trial to introduce you to Audible. Free is my favorite price.

Each of my latest series, the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides, is available on Audible. The voice I chose for these books is female. Especially JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE includes a great deal in the heroine’s point of view, so that seemed most appropriate. Only four of my other books are narrated by a male.

For those who don’t know, my husband has Parkinson’s and has been in and out of the hospital the past year. In addition, I was in the hospital also due to a very persistent UTI and have been hounded by several other pesky medical problems. Hence, I have taken far too long to complete SIDNEY’s story. It’s a fun book and I promise to have it finished this summer.

This series’ books are stand alone. Because the characters are recurring, the series is more enjoyable, in my opinion, if read in chronological order. This is GENTRY, JESSE, QUINN, LEVI, KEITH, and the one I’m currently working on (slowly) SIDNEY. So, start with GENTRY.

Find these books at the Amazon series page: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=texas+hill+country+mail+order+bride+series&i=stripbooks&crid=3L744R8MPMECO&sprefix=texas+hill+country+mail+order+bride+series%2Cstripbooks%2C99&ref=nb_sb_noss

If you’ve read all of this series, pick another of my books and choose the Audiobook. I think you’ll enjoy listening to someone read to you. Each of us deserves a little pampering, right?

Thanks for stopping by. Stay safe and keep reading.

MY RELUCTANT HERO

 By Caroline Clemmons

Most readers of sweet historical western romance love a strong hero able to stand his ground. My latest hero, Levi Iverson, is such a man. He is a friendly and dependable man who is slightly reserved. In fact, he likes most people and has a good sense of humor. In a small town, a businessman has to be congenial and friendly. Levi is pleasant, if distant, to those who have snubbed or tried to take advantage of him. We know he has a soft heart because of the kindness he shows to Charlie Gann, a slow-witted man who loves horses. Levi makes sure Charlie has a job and place to live. Levi and the sheriff and defends Charlie if bullies bother the man.

Levi's livery would have looked
similar to this one

Levi was born in Norway and came to the United States at age four. As do many Norwegians, he has blond hair and blue eyes. His tall, muscular build makes him an attractive man. As blacksmith, he came to Harrigan Springs when he was 19. In addition to the smithy, Levi repairs guns and owns the livery stable where Charlie works.

Blacksmith's tools - a
hard, hot job!

Levi’s three businesses keep him busy, but he keeps his ears tuned for anyone with a house or building for sale, as well as for anyone who needs to rent a property. He’s not a slum lord, but quite the opposite. He remembers how difficult finding a house to rent was when his parents first arrived in Texas. His father spoke a little English, but his mother didn’t. Eventually, his parents acquired a good farm near Medina that is only two hours from Harrigan Springs. His sister and her family are not far.

Noah Larsen, with children Leah,
Jacob and Aksel, and dog Thor

Levi is sensible and methodical, weighing his decisions carefully -- until he meets his match. He has a life plan, and marriage is a couple of years away when he's 30. You have probably heard the saying, “
The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” What can a man do when he rescues a beautiful woman from a trio of rascals?

Norway and the Northern Lights

Perhaps I’ve told too much. If you haven’t read LEVI AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, come read the adventure. You’ll find it at Amazon in e-book and print. It’s free in Kindle Unlimited.

LEVI AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE is book 4 in the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides Series. Whew, I have no idea what came over me to choose such a long series name. The other books in order are GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, and QUINN AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Click on the title to see the book details at Amazon.

HOW TO BUILD A SERIES

 By Caroline Clemmons

Recently an author friend (Jacquie Rogers) and I were talking about how we form our series. Everyone has his or her special way of building a series. Today, I thought you might be interested in learning how I go about constructing a new series.

Usually, the idea for the series comes with the first hero and/or heroine in a little movie in my head. (Yes, authors are crazy.) This brings me to choose the location for the community in which most of the story will take place. For instance, in my current series, Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides, each heroine is living east of the Mississippi River, and usually near the Atlantic coast.

As soon as a heroine accepts a groom’s invitation, she travels to where he lives. In this case it is Harrigan Springs in Harrigan County, both of which are fictitious. They are squeezed in between the real counties of Bandera and Medina, and Harrigan County gets the Medina River running through it. The Texas Hill Country is one of my favorite places, which is why I chose it as the site of this series. By using a fictitious city and county, it can contain the businesses and topographical features I need for my story.

The Medina River

Mail order bride stories are fun to read and to write. That’s why I wanted this to be an entire series of mail order brides, but from every level of society. The first is from Bavaria, now a part of Germany but not at the time of the story. The other heroines involve a very proper Bostonian, a pickpocket who brings a boy and her best friend, a saloon girl, an ex-convict, an Irish immigrant, and a woman in jeopardy who is on the run. Of course, they each appear to be a lovely, virtuous young woman. When you think about a mail order bride, though, you realize each is escaping something or someone. If you want to read about real mail order brides, try Chris Enss’ HEARTS WEST.

I made a list of the heroes and the occupation of each for the series. Again, I wanted to vary the type of characters. So, I have an easy going but good rancher, a firm but fair sheriff, a charming but troubled rancher, a very private blacksmith entrepreneur, a charming minister who is actually a bit too stuffy, a gruff lawyer, a cheerful mercantile owner, and a banker. (The list makes me smile and think it calls for a butcher, baker and candlestick maker like the children’s rhyme.) The personalities have to be different, too. Otherwise, the stories become boring to the reader and to me. Plus, some heroes have a big secret they do not want to reveal.

For the hero, I have to be careful or they all look like my husband, who I call Hero. He’s 6’3” with beautiful blue eyes and had dark brown hair that is now gray. I admit the good traits of the heroes are those of my Hero. To add a little variety, I do have one blond hero in this series, LEVI. I can’t help making most of the heroes like my Hero, because he is such a good man, good husband, good father, and a cutie patootie.

Levi, one of the few
blonde heroes in my books

Choosing a cover can be difficult—and can be expensive, from fifty dollars to thousands. These covers were created by author Charlene Raddon at her Silver Sage Cover Designs, and at a reasonable cost. She is a lovely person with whom working is a pleasure. She is also the designer of the new covers for my Bride Brigade and Loving A Rancher series, as well as for a few single titles. She also conceives clever series, including Bachelors and Babies, Widows of Wildcat Ridge, The Love Train Series, and others.

Continuity is important in a series or a television show or a movie. For any series, keeping a bible is a major requirement. For instance, characters can’t change eye or hair color from one book to another. The sheri8ff's office can't be across from the mercantile in one book and across from the hotel in the next. One of the reasons readers enjoy a series is that characters appear throughout the series. This is also fun for me—but the characters have to be described the same way in each book. Here I blush bright red—I goofed in the Men of Stone Mountain Texas Series and changed the name of the sheriff from Buster in TABITHA’S JOURNEY, in which he was a minor character, to Butch in WINTER BRIDE, in which he was the hero. Oops. Now I’ve learned to keep a better series bible!

bible entry:

Luda Corrigan, lives across the street from Worthingtons.

Amos Corrigan, her husband

Mr. Abe Lieberman  butcher

Ruth Lieberman

Every character has to be listed in the bible, even if his is intended as only a single walk-on part. For instance, Luda Corrigan listed above is mentioned only in one sentence in LEVI AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. However, she might play a larger part in a future book. You never know. Sometimes readers like a minor character so much they request a book about that character. That’s how QUINN’s book came into existence in this series. In the McClintock series, Finn’s book titled O’NEILL’S TEXAS BRIDE was written because of requests for his story after Finn appeared in THE TEXAN’S IRISH BRIDE. In the Kincaid series, Monk was so popular that I wrote the novella MONK’S BRIDE. For those authors who find a series bible too onerous, Diane Rodes Garland is Your World Keeper, https://yourworldkeeper.com She keeps track of everything in an author's series. She is a sweetheart and does a great job. I love writing series, and had already set up my own method years before I met her.

After the book is written, it must be edited. And re-edited. Typos sneak into the text like little gremlins. My editor is good and goes over the manuscript three times, I reread and reread until my eyes cross. Typos STILL get by us. I find them in the big name authors’ books, too. That’s why I get riled when I hear someone say indie published books have too many errors. Grrrr! I have beta readers, an editor with a Master’s degree, and I’m not exactly new to this business.

Once this is done, the book is ready to format, upload, and launch, which brings a new series of problems concerns for marketing. That’s another headache blog sometime. I love, love, love writing. Marketing, meh, not so much.

SHARING NEW SERIES!

 By Caroline Clemmons

I have exciting news to share with you!

GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, book one in my new series, Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides, releases August 12. I am thrilled about this book, but today I want to tell you about the series that has me so excited!

The Texas Hill Country Brides Series is set in fictional Harrigan Springs, Texas, the county seat of fictional Harrigan County, the next county over from the very real Bandera. Bandera, Texas, bills itself as "The Cowboy Capital of the World." I'm aware there are other cities that lay claim to the title as well, but I'm fond of Bandera and the surrounding area.

Opening in 1875, GENTRY sets the stage for the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides Series.

  • Gentry is a rancher presented with a series of life-altering events.
  • Sheriff Jesse Cameron is a recent immigrant from Scotland and a strong believer in the law.
  • Banker Keith Martin is a very nice man with a terrible secret in his past.
  • Preacher Isaac Wood, from Boston, is a good man but the tiniest bit goody-goody.
  • Mercantile owner Sidney Garton expects his wife to run the home as well as work in the store.
  • Blacksmith Levi Iverson is from Sweden and proud to be in America.
  • Lawyer Edmund Ferguson takes himself too seriously.

Spring brings bluebonnets

The covers are from Charlene Raddon's Silver Sage Cover Designs.

In my head, I can see/hear one of those old-time television announcers, as in the introduction of the Lone Ranger or Gunsmoke or Bonanza, calling you to this stirring series. (Yes, I do have an overactive imagination.<g> )

Join me on August 12 for the exciting release of GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. By the way, it's on preorder now at https://www.amazon.com/Gentry-Texas-Country-Order-Brides-ebook/dp/B0B6YN6QHK

The bull in GENTRY had wider horns.

NEW PREORDER! GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE

By Caroline Clemmons

GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE is the first book of the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Bride Series. Months ago I conceived the idea for a new mail order bride series. When I saw a cover offered by Charlene Raddon of Silver Sage Book Covers, the man on the cover looked perfect for a character I had in mind. I bought the cover on the spot and have saved it all this time. Now Charlene has created more covers for the series. This series is exciting to me, and I hope you enjoy reading the series as much as I’m enjoying planning and writing the books.

The Texas Hill Country is an area my family and I have enjoyed visiting over the years. We even spent several days at a dude ranch near Bandera--not far from where GENTRY is set. Our daughters and I loved being "dudes"—Hero not so much, but he was a good sport the entire visit. We’ve also enjoyed Lost Maples State Historic Area, Bastrop, Frederickburg, Luchenbach, and other Hill Country towns.

Gentry McRae is a rancher whose land is near the Medina River and fictional Harrigan Springs. He was lucky enough to become the partner of a man whose life he saved. Together, they’ve built a fine ranch. His partner, who is a decade older than Gentry, agrees to let his mother and grandmother send him a bride from Germany, where he was born.

The mail order bride is named Adelheid “Heidi” Roth. Although she is from her prospective groom’s birthplace, she was a baby when he left at age fifteen. His mother and grandmother attend the same church as her family, so she knows them. But not well, because her family is not in the same social circles as the wealthy groom-to-be.

Sometimes the perfect match is the one you didn't expect.

Here is the book’s description:

Nothing much riles Gentry McRae. He works hard on the ranch he co-owns with his best friend, and is content with his life. He’s proud of all they’ve accomplished in the ten years since the war. That is, until his partner dies and leaves his half of the ranch to his mail-order bride—and wills the bride to Gentry! “Now just a doggone minute, I don’t plan to marry for years!” But, a single woman can’t reside on a ranch where four men live without ruining her reputation. What’s a good man to do, except marry the woman when she arrives?

Heidi Roth has been spurned for being too plainspoken and too tall. In addition, her sister constantly makes fun of her for those reasons. That’s why—with many doubts—she’s willing to travel for months from Germany to Texas to marry a man who once lived in her town. When she arrives, she learns her prospective groom died four days earlier, but willed her his share of a ranch. She has serious doubts, but agrees to wed the partner, Gentry, to protect her reputation. Sure enough, from the next day, one event after the other happens to complicate her life—yet she is happy. Until she sees the will and learns they are not equal partners as Gentry had led her to believe.

The arrival of three orphans are a welcome addition to the household. The grassfire that threatens the ranchers and the lives of those who live there creates terror in Heidi's heart. Will Gentry return so she can tell him she's sorry for her sharp words? If he does, will he accept her apology and return to the married life she enjoyed?

Heidi Roth

Enjoy an excerpt:

The comments from her sister and cousin fueled her actions. She strode from the house toward the matchmaker’s home. Though she did not want to risk the matchmaker again, she longed to get away from the people who belittled her. Something must change.

Being ten inches over five feet meant she towered over most people. Did they think being tall meant she had no feelings? Like most women, she wanted her own husband and children. She was tired of her sister and cousins making snide remarks about her height and lack of a husband or children.

Each of the matches Mrs. Heinz suggested was a man with whom Heidi had known in school. Each disliked that he was several inches shorter than she. She had no control over her height. Each wanted a younger wife, not someone nearly twenty-five. Neither liked a woman who spoke her mind, but she would not pretend to be what she was not.

Their town was simply too small to have many bachelors. Mrs. Heinz relied on word of mouth for her matchmaking business. Heidi wanted to run into the forest and never return. Instead, she held her head high and walked the half-mile to the home of Mrs. Heinz.
