WELCOME THE WESTERN

By Caroline Clemmons

Who’s the first western hero you loved? For me, it was Roy Rogers. I longed for a horse like Trigger, and to ride with Roy saving the West from rustlers and bank robbers. I didn’t dislike Dale Evan, but I was certain Roy would prefer me if only he knew me. I was crushed when I realized his real age.

A close second to Roy was The Lone Ranger. Do I ever hear the William Tell Overture without thinking of him? No. For me, Clayton Moore was the only Long Ranger, but he was based on a real person, Bass Reeves. I still don’t understand the reason for the mask, but I loved the show. Even I realized that the same big rock that appeared in so many episodes had to be on a sound stage.

So my family moved on to evening television westerns.  “Gunsmoke” was a long-running national favorite. Who could fail to like easy-going peacekeeper Marshal Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty and Doc and Chester and Festus? My folks and I loved them. Only in the last decade did I learn Miss Kitty was modeled after a real person.  But we never guessed that Festus (Ken Curtis) had a beautiful singing voice.

“Bonanza” was so popular the named appeared on a lot of businesses throughout the country. We loved the family of men who set a high mark for the other citizens of the area. Even after one left, the series remained popular. The show was cancelled halfway through the 14th season.

Other long-running series were “The Virginian” and “The Big Valley.” There are many more I don't have space to list.  I still enjoy reruns of some of the series.

In addition, I especially enjoy the movies made from Louis L’Amour’s books. They are numerous, and I love each of them. I also enjoy rereading the books by America's storyteller, Louis L'Amour.

Pull up a chair, sit back, and enjoy a western movie. And keep reading western romance!

SHARING NEW SERIES!

 By Caroline Clemmons

I have exciting news to share with you!

GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, book one in my new series, Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides, releases August 12. I am thrilled about this book, but today I want to tell you about the series that has me so excited!

The Texas Hill Country Brides Series is set in fictional Harrigan Springs, Texas, the county seat of fictional Harrigan County, the next county over from the very real Bandera. Bandera, Texas, bills itself as "The Cowboy Capital of the World." I'm aware there are other cities that lay claim to the title as well, but I'm fond of Bandera and the surrounding area.

Opening in 1875, GENTRY sets the stage for the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides Series.

  • Gentry is a rancher presented with a series of life-altering events.
  • Sheriff Jesse Cameron is a recent immigrant from Scotland and a strong believer in the law.
  • Banker Keith Martin is a very nice man with a terrible secret in his past.
  • Preacher Isaac Wood, from Boston, is a good man but the tiniest bit goody-goody.
  • Mercantile owner Sidney Garton expects his wife to run the home as well as work in the store.
  • Blacksmith Levi Iverson is from Sweden and proud to be in America.
  • Lawyer Edmund Ferguson takes himself too seriously.

Spring brings bluebonnets

The covers are from Charlene Raddon's Silver Sage Cover Designs.

In my head, I can see/hear one of those old-time television announcers, as in the introduction of the Lone Ranger or Gunsmoke or Bonanza, calling you to this stirring series. (Yes, I do have an overactive imagination.<g> )

Join me on August 12 for the exciting release of GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. By the way, it's on preorder now at https://www.amazon.com/Gentry-Texas-Country-Order-Brides-ebook/dp/B0B6YN6QHK

The bull in GENTRY had wider horns.

Stay safe and keep reading!

HOW WELL CAN YOU PRETEND?

Remember the movie “Catch Me If You Can”, about the man who successfully pretended to be a variety of professions—from co-pilot to physician? Imagine the organized (and frightening) mind it took to pull off those feats. Posing as someone you aren’t must be nerve wracking even for a sociopath. I suppose con men and swindlers may live an extended charade as a way of life. Do you wonder if they ever start to believe they’re who they pretend to be?

In the upcoming Christmas story MAIL ORDER GLORIA: IMPOSTOR FOR CHRISTMAS, book 7, now available for preorder, Gloria is given an amazing opportunity. She’s yearned for a different life, something she’d dreamed of but hasn’t been able to manage on her own. Although she’d been desperate to get away from her life in Georgia, she is both relieved and scared by her opportunity. There’s a catch—isn’t there always? For at least a short while, Gloria must pretend to be her friend, Juliet. Gloria’s friend extracts a promise that she won’t reveal her true identity until Juliet sends word.

Here’s the description of MAIL ORDER GLORIA.

A desperate woman…

A distrustful rancher with a secret…

And a boy in need of a family.

Orphaned at an early age and sent to live with her relatives, Gloria Tabor is unhappy with her treatment from her snobby aunt and spiteful cousin. In desperation, Gloria leaves her only relatives’ home. No matter what happens, she vows she will be more forceful and stronger in the future. No more timid and shy wallflower. But with her tiny savings, where is she to go? The question is sobering, but she is determined she will not return to her kin’s home.

While deliberating her lack of choice, she overhears a young man comforting a sobbing woman that she recognizes as a friend from school. After a few minutes of conversation with them, the young woman offers Gloria the chance to escape to a ranch in Texas as a mail order bride. In exchange, Gloria must promise not to divulge her real identity until the couple has successfully eloped and managed reconciliation with the friend’s father. Though hating the idea of lying, Gloria is too relieved at the opportunity to say no.

When she changes trains on the way to her prospective groom, Gloria rescues a ten-year-old boy from a policeman threatening to take the boy to the local orphanage. Heart filled with sympathy for the homeless child, she intercedes. Later, she wonders how her prospective groom will react to her bringing a child with her, especially after she learns his propensity for “finding” money.

Texas rancher Dwight Price is a stickler for honesty. Once someone has lost his confidence, he won’t trust the person again. He strives to live up to his beliefs. On the one hand, he isn’t certain he wants to wed the daughter of his father’s oldest friend. On the other hand, he looks forward to a life of quiet harmony with his mail order bride.

Near Christmas, Gloria gets a telegram releasing her from her promise. Dwight wants to know who sent the wire and why. Her explanation destroys the faith he had in her—and then his own secret crops up.

Can these two overcome the damage to their relationship or will each be alone again?

If you like sweet western historical romance, you’ll enjoy MAIL ORDER GLORIA. This is a stand-alone, complete sweet western historical romance novella set in 1880.

Enjoy an excerpt of when Gloria and Dwight’s first meet:

The stage slowed and came to a stop in a cloud of dust. Gloria sat paralyzed by a myriad of thoughts. What if her groom didn’t accept her? What if he was angry she’d brought Mike? What if he was mean or a drunk? His letters had sounded nice, but he could have lied.

Mike stared at her. “You’re awful pale. You gonna be sick or something?”

She sighed and relaxed her grip on the seat. “I’ll be fine, but thank you for asking.”

Mr. Kelly reached for the door. “If you’ll excuse me, I’ll get out and then help you, Miss Forest.” He climbed to the ground and then turned to extend his hand to her.

“Thank you, Mr. Kelly. You’ve been very kind.”

Mike followed her and jumped to the ground. He looked around. “Not a big town, is it?”

The man smiled at Mike. “Big for these parts. Hasn’t been long since they had to fight Indians and renegades hereabouts. Well, I’ll bid you good day and good luck.” He tipped his hat and reached for his suitcase.

She became aware of a group of people waiting on the board sidewalk. The younger of the two men caught her eye. He was tall and wore a black suit with a white shirt and an odd black tie that tied in front. Goodness, but if he’d smile he’d be handsome.

The couple with him must be his parents and the boy his son, Tommy. The smiling man she supposed to be Dwight Price’s father looked like an older version of him, though not as robust. The woman smiled and her face displayed the lines to prove she smiled often. Tommy was tall for his age.

The man she thought to be Dwight stepped forward. “Juliet?...Miss Forest?”

She avoided lying by not answering the question. “You must be Dwight Price. I’m pleased to finally be here.” She put an arm around Mike’s shoulders. “This is my newly adopted son, Mike.”

Dwight’s face clouded. “Son? I had no idea.”

Mike tried to scoot behind her, but she held on to his shoulders.

“He and I met in Chattanooga and he agreed to become my son. Since you have a son near the same age, I thought you wouldn’t mind.”

Mike swallowed hard. “Sh-She s-sa-saved me from the orphanage. She said I can call her Mama.”

After what seemed like a long time, but probably was only a couple of seconds, Dwight offered her his arm. “Come and meet the family. You, too, Mike.”

She pulled Mike forward as they stepped onto the boardwalk.

“This is my mother, Orinda Mae.”

The woman pulled Gloria into a big hug. “I’m so glad you’re here. You just call me mama.” She released her and grabbed Mike’s upper arms. “You call me Grandma.”

Mike swallowed hard again. “R-Really? I can call you Grandma?”

“You sure can. I’m pleased Juliet brought you. I hear orphanages are awful places, though they are necessary.”

Dwight guided her to his father. “Juliet, you may remember my father, Jeff.”

She smiled at the man. “I was a different person then.” Not a lie but it felt like one.

Misrepresenting herself to these nice people knotted her stomach. This appeared to be the kind of family she’d always hoped would include her. She’d enjoy this life as long as she could. No matter what happened, she’d have good memories. Even if they sent her away when they learned the truth, perhaps they’d let Mike stay on the ranch.

Papa Price beamed at her. “It’s been a long time, but you were pretty then and you are now. I remember you as being a real sweet girl.”

“Thank you for saying so. I’ll try not to disappoint you.” She’d do everything she could to make herself fit into the family.

“You call me Papa or Jeff—whichever makes you comfortable.”

Tears pricked her eyelids. How she’d missed her own father. “I’d like to call you Papa if you’re sure.”

He leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “That’d please me.”

Papa extended his hand to Mike. “Glad to have you. Call me Grandpa.”

“Thank you, sir.” Mike grinned. “I mean Grandpa.”

Dwight beamed at the young boy who was next in the line of people waiting. “This is my son, Tommy. He and Mike should get along well since they’re about the same age.”

Tommy smiled at her. “I’m eight now. Can I call you Mama?”

“Of course you may. Can I call you Tommy?”

Tommy giggled.

Mike shrugged. “I’m ten.” In a stage whisper, he added, “She says a lot of funny things.”

I love this story and hope readers will share my enjoyment. Preorder now for a December 3rd release. You remember the magic of preorder—select the book now and poof! It will appear in your e-reader like magic on release day. That seems miraculous to me.

COVER REVEAL FOR MONK'S BRIDE

By Caroline Clemmons

I goofed and didn’t have a post up on Friday. I had it planned, just let life get in the way—a tooth extraction and an endoscopy. So glad those are over!

Monk Magonagle is a character introduced in The Most Unsuitable Husband, book 2 of the popular Kincaid Series. So many readers requested a book about him, that I wrote one titled MONK’S BRIDE, book 5 of the Kincaid Series. He finally has his chance at happily-ever-after.

I love Monk, whose real given name is Michael. He was a conman only because he was assigned to look after his foster brother, Nate Bartholomew. Nate and trouble were close friends until Sarah Kincaid taught him about love and family. Monk has a strict code of ethics: no carousing with loose women, no more than two small drinks, no missing church if he’s where one is available.

Now that he’s settled in Kincaid Springs, Monk is President of the Kincaid Springs Bank. He’s considered part of the Kincaid family, for which he is grateful. Longing for a wife and children makes him feel guilty when he has so much more than he ever dreamed would be his.

MONK’S BRIDE will officially release on April 12, but it’s available for preorder now. Don’t you love preorders? I forget I’ve ordered the book until it pops up in my Kindle as if by magic.

Here’s the Universal Amazon buy link: http://mybook.to/Monk Of course, if you are a member of KU, the book is free.

NEW RELEASE, NEW CONTEST!

I’m excited to announce that DANIEL McCLINTOCK is now available for preorder and will be released on Valentine’s Day. Preorder your copy now at http://a.co/37QmqYD

Valentine Contest
Beginning February 1 through 14, any comment you leave on this blog will count as an entry for the contest regardless of the post. I’ll be giving away a box of swag that will include, of course, a box of chocolates. What’s Valentine’s Day without chocolate?

In McCLINTOCK’S RELUCTANT BRIDE, Daniel was left paralyzed from the waist down. His book, DANIEL McCLINTOCK, opens two years later.

The blurb:
A compassionate woman…
Clara Van Hoosan entered training when she finished school at sixteen. Now, at twenty-two, she is one of the best heilgymnast in the new field of mechanotherapy, the precursor to modern physical therapy. When her supervisor receives a request for someone to travel to Texas in America and help a patient, Clara is pleased to accept. On her arrival in McClintock Falls, she is surprised that the patient she thought would be a teenage boy is a very handsome man her age.
A desperate man…
Two years ago Daniel McClintock was paralyzed from the waist down. He is deeply discouraged and wonders if he is bound to live his life an invalid. Each week he becomes more depressed although not idle. He keeps books for the ranch and paints landscapes with sales donated to the church. The local doctor learns of a new type of treatment developed in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Daniel can’t go there, so his family writes for a therapist trained in the new treatment to come to them.
A surprise arrives…
Everyone is expecting a man when Clara Van Hoosan arrives. As she and Daniel work together, they become attracted. She believes his is the normal attachment a patient feels toward a therapist and will fade once he’s healed. She tries to hide her feelings for him. Daniel knows she’s The One if only he can convince her to remain in McClintock Falls when a lucrative job offer arrives.

The Excerpt:
“You’re not serious!” Daniel’s glare chilled Clara as he assessed her head to toe and back up. “You said a man was arriving. You think I’m going to work with this… woman?”
He looked away and made a dismissive wave with his hand. “Forget it and get her out of here.”
Kathryn offered Clara a helpless expression then left the room.
Clara stepped forward, forcing herself to assume her professional demeanor. She had faced this reaction before, but this was so much more important. As much as she longed to help anyone in his position, this man also represented her chance to establish herself in America.
“Daniel, I am here to help you learn to walk again. I have a contract and have moved into the room next door, so you might as well get used to having me here.”
His blue eyes were glacial. “I. Said. Get. Out.”
As if he hadn’t spoken, she continued, “I have completed courses in teaching, nursing, and mechanotherapy and have helped dozens of people like you recover the use of their limbs. One of your workers has gone to the rail depot to claim my trunks. Inside two of them I have equipment which I will assemble here in your room.”
He threw a book at her but it landed at her feet. “I am not letting you near me.”
She picked up the book, glanced at the title. “Hmm, Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. I have wanted to read this. Thank you.” She laid it on the washstand.
“Give me my damned book.”
She smiled but didn’t return the tome. “But, you gave it to me.”
“You know very well I didn’t.” Using his arms and hands, he pushed up higher on his pillows. “You deliberately mislead us by using your initials instead of your first name.”
She widened her eyes and blinked at him. “Oh? I believe it is customary to use initials in business correspondence.”
He crossed his arms over his chest. “Don’t give me that innocent expression. You knew we thought you were a man—which is what you intended. I’m not having a woman working on me.”
Clara tapped a finger against her cheek. “I was under the impression your mother has been working with you to insure your leg muscles do not deteriorate. You were not adverse to her and she is a woman.”
“That’s different.”
“She faces prejudice because she is a woman healer so I would think you, as her son who is aware of this, would be more tolerant of other women healers.”
“What she does is entirely different than what you supposedly do.”
“Not so. Each of us does our best to help people. In spite of your low opinion of me, I am going to be helping you for some time. I will be in early tomorrow to help you get ready for the day. After breakfast, I will begin assembling my equipment. You will find it fascinating. For now, good evening.” She picked up the book and carried it with her.
He yelled after her, “Bring me back my damned book!”
She smiled to herself as she walked to her room. She thought she had come out best in that round. Tomorrow would begin round two.

I hope you’ll preorder DANIEL McCLINTOCK. I love the way a preordered book pops into my Kindle the day of release—like magic.
