POISON, ANYONE?

By Caroline Clemmons

Have you stocked up on candy for the trick or treaters? We’re waiting so we won’t be tempted to eat it all before Halloween. <G> As we get closer to Halloween, scary tales make the rounds. Axe killers, a knife in the back, a garotte around the throat, and poison. Like the poison apple in Snow White, through the ages poison has been a favorite tool of murderers, especially women killers. The gentler, weaker sex didn’t need to swing a heavy axe or club when they could subtly poison their victim.

I’m a fan of Agatha Christie, among other classic mystery writers. Since she worked as a pharmacist, she was a master of poisons. Her books are well written and hold up even though some were written ninety years ago. I primarily write romance, but there is usually danger in the books I write. In fact, I’ve used poison several times. There is romance in my mysteries with one exception, ALMOST HOME a contemporary mystery that's a tiny bit edgier than my other books and it includes bad language. Not words I would ever use, but they suit the characters. That book gives the impression of a romance to come.

The first book in which I used poison was BRAZOS BRIDE, the first book in the Men of Stone Mountain series. I love the people in this series—and they do seem like real people to me. Clever and beautiful Hope Montoya has realized she is being poisoned by someone in her own home. She suspects her late mother was poisoned by the same person who has now targeted her. Who would do such a thing and why? Too weak to fight alone, she enlists Micah Stone to help her. He's been in love with her since he met her. With Micah, his two brothers and two aunts join them to protect her. The two lovable aunts are inspired by my mom, Mae, and her sister, Elizabeth.

The next book that included poison was the second book in that series, HIGH STAKES BRIDE. In that book, the heroine uses mild poison to escape from a horrible man. Alice Price is a lovable woman, one who makes a lot of mistakes—like dying her hair green when aiming for brown. (I once dyed my youngest daughter’s hair lavender when aiming for blonde. She still loves me in spite of it.) Alice is lucky enough to link up with Zach Stone. This is one of my favorites of the books I’ve written. Alice is not stupid—quite the opposite—but she makes a lot of klutzy mistakes. The buy link at Amazon is https://www.amazon.com/STAKES-BRIDE-Stone-Mountain-Texas-ebook/dp/B009F7JLTK

The third book in the Men of Stone Mountain series, BLUEBONNET BRIDE, is also the third book in which poison was used as a murder weapon, but not by the heroine. Rosalyn Vandagraf was innocent, even though a crooked trial had convicted her. What she considers a miracle lets her escape being hanged  and take her young daughter with her. She travels to what must be the end of the earth and sets herself up as a seamstress. She’s terrified when Sheriff Joel Stone takes a special interest in her and her daughter. This really is the best selling of the three books. I think it’s because of the cover. Joel Stone and his family help solve the mystery of who poisoned Rosalyn’s husband. The buy link is https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Caroline+Clemmons%2C+bluebonnet+bride&i=stripbooks&crid=36E8WHNTJN8HB

Another book that includes poison is a contemporary cozy mystery, DEATH IN THE GARDEN. Heroine Heather must use all her resources to save a family friend/employee from being tried for murder. Fortunately, the new detective in town is willing to help her. Heather has taken over management of the family garden store and landscape business from her grandfather, but Grandad keeps a close eye on her. I may be biased but I thought this book was humorous and a good story. The buy link is https://www.amazon.com/Death-Garden-Heather-Cameron-Mysteries-ebook/dp/B00LRNINJE/

Stay safe and keep reading!

CHARACTER INTERVIEW--JOEL STONE FROM BLUEBONNET BRIDE

You’re just in time to make yourself comfy. Joel Stone, the hero of BLUEBONNET BRIDE, Men of Stone Mountain book three, will be here in a moment for a chat. Oh, here he comes riding up now. Give him just a minute to tie his horse at the hitching post outside.

Joel Stone

A handsome man strides in and removes his Stetson to reveal dark, almost black hair. Blue-gray eyes twinkle in a sun-tanned face. Powerful shoulders taper to a narrow waist and his denim trousers end at dark brown boots  polished to a high sheen.

With a slight bow, he smiles. “Howdy, Ma’am. “

Caroline: “Come right in.” I gesture to the chair opposite me. “Sit here where we can talk.”

Joel sits and crosses his ankles. “What did you have in mind, Ma’am?”

Caroline: “To begin, why don’t you explain how your family ended up in Radford Springs, Texas?”

Joel’s face lights up: “Be happy to. Zach is the reason we settled here. After our folks died back in Johnson County, he went northwest a ways and bought most of a mountain in Palo Pinto County.”  Joel holds up a hand. “Now I know you’re wondering how a man can own a whole mountain, but Zach only owns a valley and one side. On the map, you’ll find Stone Mountain listed, so he gets credit for the whole dadblamed mountain. Um, pardon my language.”

Caroline: “Of course. So, is Zach the oldest of you brothers?”

Joel: “I’m two years older than Zach and then Micah is two years younger. Since I’m oldest, I’m used to being in charge, but Zach is the peacemaker. He’s always been the one who captured the women’s admiration, but he never noticed. Sure am happy he found a good woman.

Caroline: “I see, so you and Micah followed Zach here?”

Joel: “Reckon you could say we decided together that we’d come stake out ranches close by one another. We were tired of fighting and chasing after criminals. Zach found his place first and built a snug little cabin. We all bought cattle and drove them here. Zach and I planned to capture one more set of criminals and then settle down, but Micah wanted to stay put.”

Caroline: “If you’re used to giving orders and Zach is the peacemaker, what is Micah like?”

Joel chuckles.  “He’s his own man, but sometimes that brings problems. We hadn’t been here long before Micah was accused of murder. Naturally, Zach and I pitched in to help him.  Like any family, we’ve had our differences, but we stick together through thick or thin.”

Caroline: “Is Micah also married?”

Joel smiles broadly: “Each of my brothers married a fine woman and each one has a large ranch with lots of cattle. I couldn’t be prouder of them—or for them. I only wish our parents could see what fine men are carrying on their name.” He turned solemn. “Guess they’d be asking me why I’m thirty-two and not wed.”

Caroline: “So it’s just you three men left in your family?”

Joel: “Not by a long shot. You ought to meet our aunts, Maggie Jo Gamble and Lizzie Mae Fraser.” He slaps his hat against his knee. “Let me tell you, they are corkers. Those two dote on us and even moved to Radford Springs to be near us.”

Caroline: “Let’s talk about you, Joel. I see you’re wearing a badge. Tell me something about yourself.”

Joel shifts uncomfortably: “Like the badge says, I’m the Radford Springs Sheriff. Took over when Sheriff Ryan retired. I want this to be a good place for families to live. Just the other day, I ran a gambler out of town for cheating at cards.”

Caroline: “Would you make an exception for a friend or someone important?”

Joel shakes his head. “I am a by-the-book lawman and you can take that to the bank.”

Caroline: “Both your brothers are married and you indicated your parents would want you to be wed also. Haven’t you found a woman you’d enjoy having as your wife?”

Joel appears embarrassed. “Not exactly. But if the new seamstress in town—she’s a widow, by the way—would give me a chance, I might be inclined.”

Caroline: “What is she like?”

Rosalyn, the new woman in town

Joel stares into space: “In the sunshine, her hair turns to molten red gold. Her eyes are brown, but not just plain brown. They’re…they’re like warm coffee. Her face is smooth and white and her hands have long, delicate fingers.” He focuses and smiles. “She has the cutest little girl named Lucy, who calls me Mister Sheriff and says I’m a giant.”

Caroline: “Sounds as if you are definitely interested in this dressmaker. What’s her name?”

Joel: “Rosalyn, and her name suits her. She’s sweet as a rose, and her voice carries the velvety, soft sounds of the South like you hear down around New Orleans.”

Caroline: “Are you and she courting or engaged?”

Joel exhales as if frustrated: “Reckon she isn’t interested in me. Don’t think I’m giving up, though. I am determined to win her over no matter how long it takes.”

Caroline: “Will you be taking her to your ranch if you convince her to marry you?”
Joel's house in Radford Springs

Joel: “No, I have a house in town.  Guess it was foolish of me, but I bought this 26-room house from a man who wanted to move on. His wife had died, see, and he lost interest. The house was a shell when I bought it, but I’m finishing it out one room at a time.”

Caroline: “A 26-room shell for a bachelor? That seems odd?”

Joel: “Reckon it is odd. He paid to have the house framed in and the roof and outside finished, but he planned to finish the inside himself. Whew,he sure did make a mess. I believe my 8 year old nephew Seth could have done as well.”

Caroline: “I can tell from your voice and facial expression that you love the house.”

Joel: “You’re right. I loved it the minute I saw it. When I heard Mr. Turnborough wanted to sell, I couldn’t get there fast enough to make an offer. Surprised me when he took it with no haggling. He loaded his kids into two wagons and took off for Colorado.”

Caroline: “Tell me more about yourself, Sheriff Stone.”

Joel shakes his head. “Ma’am, why don’t you just buy BLUEBONNET BRIDE and read it? Reckon that will answer all your questions, especially if you also read BRAZOS BRIDE about Micah and HIGH STAKES BRIDE about Zach. By the time you finish all three, you’ll be an expert on the Men of Stone Mountain. But don’t think the stories will end there. No, Ma’am. There are more coming about other people in Radford Springs. I believe Bear Baldwin has written away for a mail-order bride who's arriving along about the end of May.”

Caroline: “Thank you for that promotion, Joel. Let me include a blurb and an excerpt to entice readers a bit more (I hope).”

BLUEBONNET BRIDE Blurb:

He’s a by-the-book Texas sheriff; she’s on the run from a murder conviction...

When a tornado provides Rosalyn with the opportunity to escape the gallows, she collects her daughter Lucy and flees. They travel far enough West that Rosalyn believes she’s gone to the ends of the earth. She hopes she and Lucy will be safe in this remote North Texas town where she embarks on a new life as a dressmaker. If only she could avoid contact with people, especially the handsome sheriff who pops up every time she turns around. She fears either she or her chatterbox daughter may slip and reveal too much.

Joel Stone has been content with his life, even if it’s not the one he’d dreamed. His younger brothers are married and living nearby, his aunts have moved to Radford Springs, and he is respected for the efficient job he does as sheriff. When he meets the new widow in town, his instant attraction staggers him. She appears uninterested, but he is determined to win her hand in marriage.

But life doesn’t turn out the way either Rosalyn or Joel plan. They overcome temporary obstacles, but what of the secret she protects? Can he save her from the gallows?

My friend, Nelda Liles of Frisco, Texas
took the bluebonnet photo.
No, that's not Nelda's photo on the cover. ☺

BLUEBONNET BRIDE Excerpt from Chapter One:

Excerpt set up: Rosalyn has been convicted of poisoning her wealthy, influential husband. She is innocent, but has no way to prove it. She has been sentenced to hang the next day on the gallows she watched built outside her cell window.
Rosalyn looked at Lucy’s drawing. Her daughter’s simplistic art showed a woman and little girl holding hands in a garden. How many times had she and Lucy walked among her plants, admiring the blooms and the butterflies attracted to the flowers? Rosalyn sank to her cot and sobbed.
The wind picked up and a gust fluttered the paper in her hands. Lightning flashed and rain blew through the open window. Rosalyn moved to the other cot across the narrow cell. At least the rain didn’t hit her there.
The sky grew darker and clouds developed a greenish cast. Fine hairs on Rosalyn’s arms prickled and raised. A peculiar sulphurous odor surrounded her.
“Sheriff, the sky looks ominous, like a tornado is coming.”
Sheriff Boudreau glanced up but didn’t rise from his chair. “Naw, too early in the year for a cyclone.” He went back to reading his newspaper, which is what he did most of the time as far as Rosalyn could tell. Either the man memorized the stories or he was the slowest reader ever born.
Dust and debris blew through the window and swirled around the cell. A horrific sound reached Rosalyn’s ears, like a freight train roaring toward town. She’d never been in a tornado, but she recognized the vibration from descriptions she’d heard. Instead of just dust and paper, now debris flew from between the bars. A tin can hit her forehead with such force she fell back against the wall.
“Take cover,” yelled the sheriff and he hit the floor in an attempt to crawl into his desk’s kneehole.

WHY BOTH BROTHERS AND POISONS IN MY TRILOGY?

Did you read my weekend post about Autism Awareness? If not and you know someone with autism, please scroll down below today's post (AFTER you read this one, of course) and read the weekend's post then watch the video. And please remember to leave a comment if you wish to be included in the drawing for one of my books, winner's choice. Remember to leave your email with your comment. A follow counts as an extra entry. Yada, yada, blah, blah...you know all that, right? My winner will be announced here on Wednesday, April 18th.

WHY BOTH BROTHERS AND POISONS IN MY NEW TRILOGY?

My new trilogy, Men of Stone Mountain, is about the three Stone brothers: Micah, Zach, and Joel. Each is strong, handsome, and has high principles. Aren’t brothers enough of a link for a trilogy?

Yes, but there’s another link to these three books. Each involves poison in some way. No, I’m not bloodthirsty and I don’t intend to use any of my knowledge to wipe out real people. In this trilogy, however, I do kill a few people. Ah, the joys of being a writer. (Laughing fiendishly.)

Studying herbal medicine is sort of a mini-hobby. I’ve taken the herbal class Beth Trissel teaches, as well as perusing my own stash of books on folk medicine and Writer's Digest's DEADLY DOSES. Pioneers relied heavily on their ability to recognize healing plants as well as those that discouraged pests and vermin. No Walgreens or WalMart around in those days. Early settlers also learned that what can heal, if administered improperly, can harm. Don’t you suspect a lot of so-called natural deaths were helped along before modern forensics discouraged using potions and tinctures to kill? Maybe I’m suspicious by nature, but I suspect a lot of troublesome people died prematurely, helped along by a loving family member.

BRAZOS BRIDE is a western historical romance, but it is also a mystery.

Hope Montoya
Hope Montoya, the heroine, is a smart woman and figures out that someone is poisoning her. Who and why are more difficult problems. Until she knows, she can trust no one who has access to her food or medicine. Hope is a very wealthy woman who owns huge cattle ranch on the Brazos River and lives there in a large hacienda.

California version of a hacienda. Substitute cactus for the palm trees
and include an adobe wall around a large
courtyard and fountain for Hope's home.
She vows to fight for her life, but she’s so weakened by the poison that she can’t fight alone. Enter our hero, Micah Stone to the rescue. Do you hear the “1812 Overture” playing as the hero rides up? You know, I’ve heard a highbrow is someone who can hear that music without thinking of the Lone Ranger. But I digress.

Micah Stone, Rancher

Micah also has enemies in their area. He fought for the Union Army and the Civil War has left many North Texas citizens bitter. Micah’s own brothers fought for the Confederacy. Despite their political views, the Stone brothers are closely knit. When Micah was falsely accused of killing Hope’s father, Zach and Joel came to Micah’s aid.

The story opens two months after the trial in which Micah was acquitted. A severe drought has Micah desperate for water. His own water sources have dried up and his cattle are dying of thirst. Micah and his brothers and ranch hands haul water daily from Zach’s spread further west.

Here’s a review of BRAZOS BRIDE:

A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW
Reviewed by: Barb

I found this book to be very entertaining. I read it in one afternoon because I had to know who was trying to murder Hope, the heroine. Her interaction with Micah and their relationship was the heart of the story. I really got into the story and the characters. The mystery of just who of the many characters were the evil ones kept me reading and turning pages (so to speak) on my Kindle. I was unable to stop reading this book until I finished it. That really says something for the author's plot and cast of characters. I enjoy these types of books, but this one was exceptional. I will be patiently waiting for the stories of Micah's brothers, Zach and Joel. I see the potential for some very good stories following these brothers' lives. Good job in making me want more.

Isn’t that a lovely review? I love when a reader/reviewer "gets" my books. And the book is ONLY 99 CENTS. What a great deal!

The BRAZOS BRIDE villain is vicious and almost non-stop. After an attempt on their life their wedding night, here’s an excerpt of another strike the next day when they stop by Micah’s ranch on the way to Hope’s hacienda. Bert and Slim are Micah’s ranch hands. I’ve already mentioned that Zach and Joel are his brothers:

Hope savored a bit of the stew, then bit into a fresh biscuit covered with syrup. Closing her eyes in bliss, she chewed slowly. “Oh my, this is wonderful. Never have I tasted better stew. And these biscuits are light enough to float away.”

Bert blushed and lowered his head. “Thank you, Miz Stone.”

Micah’s dimpled smile demonstrated his appreciation for her comment. Why should that please her so?

Hope learned more about their struggle for water, how they'd hauled barrels of it from some spring a good ways off on Zach's land, apparently their only remaining dependable source of water.

She remembered her father’s angry reprimand and the blow he’d delivered when she’d suggested he install windmills on their land. Her eye was swollen and purple for days, but he told the servants she’d fallen against the door. They knew, of course, and wouldn’t look at her until the bruises faded. She pushed the sad memory aside and returned to the present. Did she dare make a suggestion to Micah?

She gathered her courage. “Have you thought about a couple of the Mitchell Self-Governing Patent Windmills? I saw an ad for them and plan to install them in several spots on my land.”

Excitement gleamed in Micah’s eyes. “Hey, I saw an ad also, and I’d love to have them. Until now, I haven’t had the cash.”

He’d planned the same thing. And he didn’t appear to resent her suggestion. She wanted to shout with glee. He actually respected her opinion, and didn’t say a woman had no business thinking such thoughts. “Oh, well, maybe we can get a discount on the freight and cost if we order together.”

Zach nodded. “Good idea, Hope. I wouldn’t mind a couple of them myself, soon as we get your and Micah’s problems settled.”

They talked about where the windmills would be placed and guessed how long it would take them to arrive. All through their discussion, Hope was treated as if her ideas were equal to those of the men. Their response surprised and soothed her. Maybe this arrangement would work for everyone.

Micah laid his spoon aside while Bert served up the pie. "I need to talk about something less pleasant. Someone tried to kill us last night." For a minute everyone stopped talking and stared at Micah. The only sound was a horse’s nervous whinny.

Bert cocked his head toward the window and paused as if listening to the horse, but it quieted so he resumed serving. Everyone forked up the pie while Micah explained about the ordeal.

"Sheriff know?" Joel asked between bites.

Micah nodded. "Surprised me. Acted halfway decent about it. Said he'd keep investigating, but don't suppose anything will come of it. Without a witness, it could be anyone."

"So what's your plan, Cap’n?" Slim asked.

Micah swallowed and said, "I'm leaving you and Bert in charge here. For months now someone’s been poisoning my wife. You know her father was murdered, and now someone's tried to kill us. We have to be on guard all the time. You two are charged with taking care of this place while the rest of us take care of my wife." He dug into the last of his pie.

Slim looked indignant. "Poisoning a purty lady like Miz Stone? Low down sidewinders!"

"You’re right about that.” Micah pushed his plate aside. “Tomorrow you can start the cattle toward the river. One of us will stay at the Montoya ranch with Hope so she's always protected, but the other two will be over to help."

Always protected. She repeated the words in her head while she nibbled at her pie. The words reassured her and she looked at each of the men at the table. She might not have her home to herself, but safety in numbers popped into her mind. She no longer faced danger alone. Things would be all right now.

Bert asked, "Reckon I ought to go cook for you? I could make sure no one messed with Miz Stone's vittles."

Zach smiled apologetically at Hope as if he'd known she should have been included in the decision. "Our two aunts will arrive soon to help our new sister, maybe today if they caught the stage."

Micah said, "You're badly needed here, Bert, to look after this place."

Bert actually smiled. "Me and Slim can do it, cain't we?"

Slim nodded and started to say something, but another horse whinnied and this one sounded alarmed. Slim frowned and sniffed the air. "You smell smoke?"

Micah sniffed at the same time. "Something burning, Bert?"

"Nope, I done put the fire out on account of how dry it is. Covered it good with dirt." He rose and ambled to the window.

"Lord A’mighty, the barn's afire!"
