COULD YOU LIVE A DOUBLE LIFE?

Secret lives, hidden dreams, and forbidden sex in the Old West—what’s a woman of nobility to do when a handsome rancher tears through her world like an Owyhee dust devil?

Most of you know I’m a fan of Jacquie Rogers’ books. The one I’m reviewing today is my favorite, though. Of course, I think that each time she releases a new one. Readers can’t go wrong with any of her books, but I’m partial to western historical romance. I enjoy romance with action and adventure as well as a dose of humor. MUCH ADO ABOUT MUSTANGS has all of those in one very entertaining book.

Josh McKinnon has just recovered from the gun shot he received in a previous book. He is out of sorts, though, because his family members have trapped him into playing the male lead in the local production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, which will star the lovely and famous actress Lady Pearl Montford. He wants nothing to do with a snobby British woman, especially not after she insults his mother Esther and him at his mom's book shop.

The townsfolk are as excited as Josh is disdainful. To make his mood even worse, Old Man Linstad reneged on his promise to sell him his ranch and now is only deeding over half the ranch—and it’s not the half with the buildings. Oh, but he wants the same amount of cash. Now Josh has a bunch of fancy horses arriving and no barn to house them.

Lady Jane hides a huge secret that could ruin her career. She and her brother are really Pearl Jane and Jasper Evans from Kentucky. The pair formerly appeared in a Cossack’s trick riding show. She is especially gifted and loves to ride. For years she and Jasper have looked forward to owning their own ranch. They sent money to their grandfather to buy their yearned-for ranch. Their grandfather assures them he’s found them the perfect place.

In the meantime, Pearl and Jasper are searching for their long lost brother, Micah, who supposedly joined Pinkertons—or did he?  When it appears their lives may be all set, an evil man appears from their past and threatens their future.

Well, that’s all I’m saying because I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment of this superb book. I can tell you that Jacquie Rogers did a lot of research for this book.  She can back up everything in the book with examples.

For instance, in the late 19th century, many small towns had a theater and a thespian group. When a famous actor or actress toured, locals filled out the cast. Another example is the Cossack group. There were such groups touring. Wild West shows were all the rage and they often included a group of Cossacks as well as Native Americans.

I eagerly rate MUCH ADO ABOUT MUSTANGS as a 5 star read. The print version will soon be available. In the meantime, you can find the e-book online at the usual book vendors including Amazon, Nook, and Kobo. Grab this book--you'll be glad you did!

MY REVIEW OF HEALED BY A HEART

Destiny in Deadwood Series

MY REVIEW

Liam Anderson lost his heart and his religion when his wife Mary died, leaving him with Hannah and David. His children mean the world to him. He's taking them from their Missouri home and heading west. He's hoping he can run from painful memories. If not, he fears he’ll lose his mind.

The night before he plans to leave, his two younger brothers arrive. Zach barely saved Jake from being captured by troops for allegedly killing his fiancée. The brothers explain that Jake actually shot the man who raped her, but the man who helped the rapist and then shot her escaped. The villain who ran away is an officer at Fort Leavenworth, and Jake and Zach fear for their lives. Without delay, the family loads up and leaves that night for Deadwood in Dakota Territory.

Miss Eleanor Smith is a thirty two year old spinster who assists her father, Reverend Nathaniel Smith, with his ministry. She is no shy shrinking violet, but helps any who need her, including the local soiled doves. During the war, she helped bring peace to dying soldiers. For the twenty-two years since her mother’s death, Ellie and her father have lived in the back of the large tent he uses for church services and they've traveled from place to place. Using the tent as a classroom, she teaches school in the daytime. Ellie believes her chance has passed, yet she still dreams of a house where she can create a real home, complete with husband and children.

Deadwood was supposed to be a fresh start for the Andersons, but trouble followed them. Doesn’t it always? Can Liam resolve his brother's legal problems? Is he destined to raise his children alone? How will the brothers earn their living? I don’t give spoilers in my reviews so I won’t tell you more.

Ms Woolf has created likable characters (except the thoroughly detestable villain) and I enjoyed reading about them. Although this is the second book in her Destiny in Deadwood series, it genuinely stands alone. If you enjoy western historical romance, you’ll enjoy the unfolding story of the Anderson family in HEALED BY A HEART.

*I was furnished a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Release Date: May 2014

Genre: Historical Romance. Western.

All Liam Anderson wanted after the War Between the States, was a little peace. After seventeen years in the army, he’s tired of fighting and killing. Having lost his beloved wife to influenza, he’s tired of hurting. And seeing his baby brother framed for murder, he’s tired of injustice.

He left everything behind to help his brothers escape, packed up his children and possessions, and took them all to a gold claim in Deadwood. Miss Eleanor Smith is a thirty-two year-old spinster. She gave up her dream of a home and family a long time ago. Instead, she has spent her life traveling the world, ministering to the weak, the injured, the poor, and the forgotten, following her preacher father from one hell hole to another.

From what she’s seen of men and the world, she’s better off taking care of herself. And she gets along just fine, until she literally falls into Liam’s arms, gets in the middle of a fight that isn’t hers, and becomes a pawn for an enemy’s revenge.

Deadwood was supposed to be a fresh start for Liam Anderson and his younger brothers, but trouble followed him and his children. And when Eleanor disappears, only Liam can rescue her. The headstrong, independent woman awoke his dead passion, but refused to surrender to his touch. Can he convince her that merely surviving isn’t enough? Despite his sins, he's the only man who can save her, and she's the only woman strong enough to heal his broken heart.

PROLOGUE

April 1876
St. Louis, Missouri

Liam Anderson sat in front of a blazing fire, in his pajamas and robe, puffing on his pipe, reading, for the last time in this house. The place he’d called home for so many years. The kids were asleep upstairs. Sleep had eluded him and he’d risen to read until he got tired.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

He looked up from the book he read and glanced at the mantel clock. One of the few things he hadn’t packed away. “What in the world? Who would be out in this weather at this hour?

”What the hell?” said Liam, when he opened the door to his two younger brothers. “Jake? Zach? What are you two doing here? It’s the middle of the night.”Zach growled from behind Jake. “Are you going to let us in or make us stand in this rain all night?”

“Come in. Zach put that gun away,” said Liam.

“Can’t until the kid here,” he poked Jake in the back with his gun, “is inside and we’ve talked to you."

Jake, the youngest of his brothers, walked into the foyer of the house, followed closely by Zach. He stared down the hallway, packed with luggage and boxes down to the parlor, but didn’t question it. Didn’t even seem to notice that the house was packed up ready to move.

Both of them were haggard, completely worn out. Their coats were soaked through and they couldn’t have been comfortable. He’d never seen them looking so exhausted or…desperate.

“Sorry to do this to you, Liam. I know you’re leaving tomorrow,” said Zach as he holstered his gun and dripped water onto the foyer floor. He threw his had onto one of the steamer trunks. Jake followed suit.

It was times like these that the difference between his brothers was so striking. Zach with his nearly black hair and dark blue eyes. There was one in every generation with the coloring of their Gypsy great grandmother, Zach was theirs and their father had been the one in his generation. It was rare to have two gypsies in the same family, usual it was an uncle or aunt rather than a parent of the latest child with the coloring.

Jake with dark blond, overly long hair and light blue eyes most resembled their dear mother. Liam was somewhere between the two, with light brown hair and gray eyes.

His children were different as night and day, too. Ten year old David resembled Liam not only physically but mentally too. David always seemed to weigh his words before he spoke them. Whereas Hannah, the gypsy of her generation, said whatever came into her little head. She was only five, but even at her age, David had been as contemplative as he was now.

He smiled thinking of his children. They were his joy. His reason for living. He closed his eyes and grounded himself in the present and answered Jake.“Yes. At first light. Now, tell me what’s going on and why you brought Jake here at gun point.”

“Only way I could get him to come,” growled Zach.

“And?” Liam said, exasperated. “Don’t make me beat the story out of you word by word, little brother. Just tell me the problem.”

Liam pointed at the two chairs in front of the fire and then went to the fireplace and stoked the banked coals back to a roaring blaze. He really didn’t need this now, not when he was leaving in the morning. Not when he was so close to putting the old, hurtful memories behind him.

Cynthia Woolf is the author of six historical western romance books and one short story with more books on the way. She was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother
was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.

Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance TAME A WILD HEART, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia’s
father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

SUSAN HORSNELL AND CAPTURING CHARLIE

Please welcome my friend, Susan Horsnell, to the blog. You may remember that Susan has been here before with others of her many titles. Her books have received notable professional reviews.

Susan is a retired nurse who lives in Australia, but more about that later in the post. I’m happy to say she and her husband will be visiting the U.S.A. in late winter of 2015 and has included a visit with my husband and me on her trip.Hooray! Her latest release is CAPTURING CHARLIE.

CAPTURING CHARLIE Blurb:

One week before he is due to marry, Charlie leaves the family who had given him a second chance at life. Orphaned at the age of 10, when his parents and sister are killed in a botched bank robbery, Charlie is taken in by his father’s best friends.

After being deceived by his fiancé, Charlie sets out on his own. He encounters an abandoned dog and the two become close companions as they travel over the mountain range in search of a new home.

After being shot at and thrown from his horse, he suffers a life threatening head injury. Josephine Platt takes responsibility for his care, after all, it was her crazy Grandmother who shot the poor stranger.

Will Charlie recover and lose his heart to the feisty girl or will past experiences leave him unforgiving and bitter?

CAPTURING CHARLIE Excerpt:

Charlie came in early from riding the fence line. The day was hot, the air thick with moisture, and he looked forward to a swim in the nearby creek. It would wash off the dirt and grime of the day as well as bring relief to his tired, aching muscles. Fixing fences was back breaking work and the only job on the ranch that he hated. The chore needed doing too damned often thanks to one very amorous bull.

He sighed as he dismounted near the barn and led his horse, Shadow, inside. Giggling and chatter reached his ears as he entered. Sounds like Lois. Wonder who she’s with? He led his horse into the nearest empty stall, patted his nose and closed the stall door.

Charlie strode towards the tack room at the end of the stable block, the area the sounds had come from. A smile graced his face. Maybe Lois will come swimming with me.

He pushed open the door to the tack room and froze. Lois squealed as she sat upright in the small bed, attempting to clutch the sheet to her breasts. Her top half was bared for Charlie to see. Her creamy white skin, small perky breasts and dark rose coloured nipples drew his eyes. The man she was with lay as naked as the day he was born, Lois was obviously the same.

I was a Nurse, a career that spanned more than 35 years. During my career I specialized in caring for people with Alzheimer’s type Dementia, an area that fascinates me despite how heartbreaking it can be. My dear father-in-law is unfortunately afflicted with this disease and now resides in a Nursing Home. In the not too distant future I am hoping to pen a novel incorporating some of the stories I have heard from these amazing people. Part of my career was with the blind and I also cared for severely disabled children for a while too.
When I retired 4 years ago I decided it was time to get the stories out of my head and onto paper. From there I just hoped my stories were interesting and well written enough to attract readers.
I am married to the love of my life, we have 2 wonderful adult boys, and 5 amazing grandchildren. We also play substitute Mum and Dad to a beautiful, adopted young lady. We reside in sunny Queensland, Australia in the midst of a Blackbutt Forest. We are surrounded by the peace and quiet of Mother Nature and wildlife abounds. It is a dream come true location for us.

SYDNEY RYE SERIES BOXED SET BY EMILY KIMELMAN

SYDNEY RYE SERIES
by Emily Kimelman

Books 1-3, The complete Series Box Set (Value Pack)

The Sydney Rye series of mysteries features a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. This series is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don't mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!

This box set includes all three of the Sydney Rye Books.

UNLEASHED (A Sydney Rye Novel, #1)

When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller's dog-walking business on Manhattan's exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.

But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim--and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.

When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit--cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan's elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

DEATH IN THE DARK (A Sydney Rye Novella, #2)

At the beginning of Death in the Dark we find Joy Humbolt hiding, not only from the law, but also from her past and the mistakes she's made. Living this isolated life doesn't last long though when a visit from Mulberry brings Joy to accept her new identity as the Private Detective, Sydney Rye. To complete the transformation, Joy must learn to control her emotions as well as her giant aggressive dog, Blue. With the help of an expert trainer, Joy learns to fight with her mind as well as her body. However, when the daughter of a close friend is brutally murdered in the desert, Rye turns away from her mentor to seek revenge. Sydney's quick temper and deadly intentions lead her into a trap that she will need all of her new skills to survive.

INSATIABLE (A Sydney Rye Novel, #3)

The third book in the series begins with private detective Sydney Rye living a simple, disciplined life in London, but when a dangerous man from her past calls, Rye finds she cannot turn him away. Robert Maxim explains that the daughter of a powerful friend has gone missing and he wants Rye to find her. In exchange he offers her something she had given up hope of ever having; freedom from her past.

With her dog, Blue, at her side, Rye meets up with her new partner, a handsome man she's not sure she can trust. Heading for Mexico City, they go undercover, posing as husband and wife. After meeting with the bereaved parents, Rye starts to sense that there is more going on than just a missing girl. But it isn't until they arrive in the Yucatan Peninsula, hot on the girl's trail in Paradise, that all hell breaks loose. Sydney has to reach out for help from old friends and deal with the consequences of her past, if she's going to find the girl and keep them all alive.

EXCERPT From UNLEASHED

A white fog hung in the dark sky. The mist dulled the glare of the streetlights. Beads of dew covered the parked cars and sparkled in the soft yellow light. Blue led the way into Prospect Park.

As soon as I let him off leash, he bounced down the paved path. The gently rolling lawn glowed a silver green. The man-made forest was a wall of blackness. The fog hung low above us. We wandered onto smaller trails and roamed through the trees, up steps to the top of the biggest hill, then down and around the lake that glimmered in the night’s light.

Three men sat on a bench. They wore rags and suckled on bottles in brown paper bags. One stood up, unsteady. He opened his mouth to speak, a naughty smile playing in his rummy eyes. Blue stepped out of the shadows, where he had been investigating an interesting smell, and moved to my side, falling in step with me. Fear twisted the man’s smirk into a grimace. He stumbled back to his friends, whispering, “Devil.” The three men cowered on the bench as Blue and I passed. We walked home with our heads held high, afraid of nothing and nobody.

EXCERPT from DEATH IN THE DARK

It was pouring rain, and my headlights barely cut the darkness when I rolled across the border between Arizona and Mexico. No one ventured out of the warmly lit hut serving as border control to check my I.D. They waved from the window at my RV to just keep driving. So I did. My relief was so intense that once the lights were no longer visible in my rearview mirror, I had to pull over. I climbed out into the storm, held my arms out to the side, and cried out into the void, “I made it!”

“What the fuck are you doing?” Mulberry pulled alongside me, leaning out of his open window, scowling. “Get back in the fucking RV. We’re not there, yet.” He rolled up his window and waited, looking straight ahead into the darkness. I climbed back into the sturdy old RV, and, soaked to the bone, started to drive again.

For three hours, we continued on the same road. Florescent-lit low buildings slid by in the darkness, advertising gas and tacos. My night vision made shadows into monsters, and the empty desert filled with motion. Part of it was the rain, so rare to that region that it seemed to delight in all the open space. Drops fell thick and straight, and then they came from the left, and suddenly from the right. My headlights, like a stagnant spotlight on a troupe of dancers, caught the movements in brief glimpses.

EXCERPT from INSATIABLE

Out on the street the rain had stopped. I walked a couple of blocks just letting my body warm up to the idea of movement. It didn't take long before I wanted to run. I started going a little faster, jogging gently past shop windows filled with pencil-thin, faceless mannequins posing in extraordinary fabrics. A woman teetering on stiletto heels while jabbering into her cell phone walked a small, white, curly-haired dog. The little dog strained against its pink halter, yapping at us. Blue's head stayed straight and even with my hip. The little dog's bark faded as we turned onto a side street filled with shade, the sticky sweet scent of flowers, and the soft whoosh of a breeze. My pace picked up as I tread on fallen bright purple petals. I felt my heart quickening as Chapultepec Park rose up ahead.

Crossing into the park, I began a sprint. A line of families waiting to enter the zoo watched us pass. Little arms shot out to point at Blue, whispers of "lobo" followed us.

I felt like I was flying. Not a thought entered my head only the joy of speed as I raced down an empty path. When my chest felt like it was on the verge of explosion and my legs were no longer communicating I slowed down. The path under my feet was a light sand. The trees around me bent and swayed in the gentle wind. I relished the shade and mild temperature, the occasional gust that helped cool me.

GUEST TESSA GRAY SHARES HER TEXAS DREAM CATCHER SERIES

Author Tessa Gray
I grew up in the foster care system, so I had several different homes, but when the dust settled, I ended up living in Osseo, Minnesota, a small town near Minneapolis. As a child, I wasn’t a particularly avid reader, but in elementary school, I loved a series of books about the adventures of three Swedish triplets: “Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka” (I kid you not!) Another series I enjoyed was the Trixie Belden adventures; I even had Trixie Belden paper dolls and spent hours playing with them, making up more stories.
The genre I love best is women’s fiction because the characters are multi-dimensional with real-life experiences. My favorite authors are Kristin Hannah, Anita Shreve, Nicholas Sparks, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and Debbie Macomber. When I’m not writing, I love to spend time quilting. It’s a fairly new hobby for me, and I find it therapeutic. I’ve been a singer all my life, so I’m always finding myself a gig. I always tell friends, “I’ve never met a microphone I didn’t like.” It’s true…I love entertaining very much. During my early years, singing sustained me. As a life-long educator I realize that every child needs something they excel at, and for me it was music.
I have a favorite quote that most people are probably familiar with: “An unexamined life is not worth living.” While there’s a great deal of debate as to who said it (Socrates or Thoreau), it remains a staple for me. I teach college students to write argument essays and in preparing them, I insist they constantly reexamine their values systems and explore other people’s ideas. In doing so, we learn a great deal about ourselves. I practice what I preach and incorporate this motto into my own writing, and it helps me create better,  more believable characters that often undergo a complete metamorphosis as the book comes to an end.
Although I always made up stories in my head as a child (inventing that perfect family I never had!) I didn’t begin seriously pursuing writing until 2004. I generally sit in my family room, staring out into our pasture, watching our goats and miniature donkeys as I write on a laptop. Music, of course, is required, and my taste fluctuates between Celtic, Classical, and Country. Since I’m writing the Dream Catchers series set in the small, West Texas town of Alpine, country music is what I most often listen to know: George Strait, in particular.
I’m probably not your typical writer because I spend at least a month “thinking” out my storyline and characters before writing a single word. After I’ve thought out the book, I grab my trusty storyboard and get to work. I plan the turning points, black moment, etc. When I’m finished with that, I use different colored sticky notes to plot out every single scene. By the time I begin the book, it’s completely planned out. It changes along the way, of course, but the skeleton of the novel is in place. That’s the teacher in me; I simply can’t help myself!
Cemetery Inspiration

I must confess that the people and events in my novels are based on often based on real life. Several years ago a recently divorced acquaintance made a trip back to where she was raised and went to pay her respects to a relative buried in a small, Texas cemetery. Coincidentally, a classmate of hers happened to be there, paying his respects to his deceased wife. The two reconnected and they ended up getting married. That image stuck in my mind, and when I wrote LAST CHANCE TEXAS years later, I knew from the beginning of the novel that the couple would meet in a cemetery. Nathan Wainwright is a widower, paying his respects to his wife; Kelsey Malone is an out-of-towner who pays her respect to a distant aunt. When some girlfriends and I took a road trip to the tiny, West Texas town of Alpine, the first stop I made was at the Alpine Angel’s Cemetery. That became the first scene in the book.

I don’t write every single day and make no apologies. For me, I need a break from writing and that’s often when I either quilt or do some singing. I think life is all about balance and in the end, if you pursue other things and don’t ‘put all your eggs in one basket’, you’ll be a better writer.
The most important job of writers (in my opinion) is to bring real, true-life characters with enormous depth. The third book of the Dream Catcher series features Jake Crenshaw. Jake’s a washed up rodeo rider who tends bar. He’s not well educated and relies on his enormously good looks to get him the girl. I suspect some readers will be taken back by the fact he’s blue collar, but in the real world, not everyone has a college education. I think it’s so important to write about real people. My books stress hope and change; I know this sounds like a political commercial, but it’s true. People can change at any age; that’s so important!
My long term plan is to continue teaching and writing. I can’t imagine a time when I won’t enjoy helping young writers find their own, authentic voice. What could possibly be more fulfilling? I do have several things on my “bucket” list. One of those includes taking a line dancing class at a nearby community center. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I can’t wait to start! Next summer I’m flying to Ireland with friends to go back to my roots. My ancestors came to America during the Potato Famine of the 1840’s, and I’ve always been curious about what that part of the world is like. I’d be lying if I didn’t say the Irish pubs and whiskey tours weren’t an additional draw!

In addition to finishing up my Dream Catchers series, I’ll be working on four novellas  set  in a fictitious Minnesota town called Crescent Falls. Each novella features one of four sisters (the Hanlon girls) who are forced to deal with their father’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Like all siblings, each one reacts differently to tragedy, using completely different coping mechanisms to survive. Sarah’s story begins in December of 2013, and the other siblings (Maggie, Clare, and Chloe’s will follow in March of 2014, June of 2014, and September of 2014, respectively.)
The best advice I can give any writer is to write for the love of it. If you want to quit after receiving rejections, you’re really not a writer. I think of writing as fulfilling a mission; giving readers your own, unique message that no one else can give them. It’s an awesome responsibility.
I’ve been asked to give an interesting fact about myself, so here it is. I’ve sung the national anthem at a Texas Rangers game. In 2003, my women’s quartet, “Forward Motion” was honored to perform and we did well! As I looked up at the huge screen and watched all of us sing that marvelous song, I thought that I was the luckiest person in the world to be able to perform in front of over 17,000 people and have the time of my life! I’ve also been asked about something that would surprise readers about me. This past year I joined the world of Twitter.  Vice President Joe Biden asked people to tweet a question about gun safety, and I responded, as did thousands of others. My question was selected as one Mr. Biden would address at a town hall meeting on February 19, 2013. It was amazing to hear him spend five minutes on my question. I almost felt famous!
Before ending this discussion, I’d love to present readers with an excerpt from the second in the Dream Catchers series STARS OVER TEXAS which has a September 15th, 2013 release date:
Prologue
Just put a gun to my head, Blake, and let’s get this over with. I’d rather die than stay married to you.
Meredith Chapman’s stomach pitched violently as she readjusted her seatbelt, preparing for take-of. Her husband of fifteen years sat next to her, his shoulders stooped, head slumped over as he pounded out another text message. Aware he’d probably blow her off, she made one last attempt to get him off the phone. “The plane’s about to take off, Blake. Please turn it off.”
Blake shot her an angry glare, his piercing blue eyes sending chills through her. “I’m almost done. Quit nagging, will you?”
“Sir, all electronic devices must be turned off.” The meticulously dressed flight attendant leaned over, hands on her hips, and glared at him as she spoke.
As several nearby passengers watched the drama unfold, Meredith smiled weakly; just as she always did when apologizing and trying to run interference for a husband she’d fallen out of love with years ago.
The attendant’s voice grew louder as she implored him to comply. “Sir, I’m telling you one last time. Turn off your cell phone.”
“Blake, please---“
“Oh, all right.” Slamming it shut, he sank down in his seat, looking like a small child who’d been reprimanded. Without warning he grabbed Meredith’s arm, wrapping his fingers around it so tightly she nearly blacked out. “If you ever embarrass me like that again they’ll be hell to pay.”
And that was the last thing she remembered.
