CHRISTMAS IN MINNESOTA

By Lyn Horner

I was born in San Francisco, California, but moved to Minnesota with my parents when I was not quite four years old. My mother was from Montgomery, a small town fifty miles southwest of Minneapolis, where we lived. The town had been settled mainly by Czech immigrants in the latter half of the 19th century. They called themselves Bohemian rather than Czech because they came from Bohemia, a former kingdom in the Holy Roman Empire, now a portion of the Czech Republic.

Every Christmas we drove down to Montgomery to my Grandma and Grandpa Novotny’s house, where we gathered with my aunts, uncles and cousins. Occasionally the drive could be treacherous on icy roads, but Daddy always got us there safely, although I sometimes suffered bouts of motion sickness. My stomach still acts up that way now and then.

Grandma was a wonderful cook, as were my mom and her three sisters. The main dish was never turkey; rather, it varied between chicken, duck or goose which were either purchased at the local butcher shop or brought home by Grandpa, the uncles and my older male cousins. They all loved to hunt and fish. Grandpa was also a fur buyer, meaning he bought skins from hunters, stretched and cleaned them before shipping them off to buyers in the east. The basement was his work room, and there was a strong odor down there. The cousins and I had strict orders never to open the basement door.

Not that was cared. We were too busy chasing each other around the house, playing hide and seek, tag and whatever games we favored back then. Of course the kitchen was off limits unless we wanted our bottoms paddled. The cooks did not like kids underfoot, a sentiment I understand now that I have a few grandkids of my own.

By the time dinner was on the kitchen table – a table now sitting in my kitchen – we were all drooling over the heavenly smells. After filling our plates we spread out in the parlor and kitchen, some at tables, others on the couch or chairs, balancing the delectable feast on our laps. The house was small, you see, but we didn’t mind. The more the merrier!

Later, when dinner had been digested, partly at least, came dessert time. Oh, the cakes and pies! My mom was the official pie baker. That woman made the best pie crust, light and flaky as any French pastry. She never used a recipe, just did it from memory. I gave up trying to copy her technique decades ago.

Shortly before sundown, which came around 5:00 or 5:30, it was time for us to say goodbye and head home to the city. I can’t remember if Grandma and Grandpa ever gave me and their other grandkids any Christmas gifts, material ones that is, but they gave us the best gift of all, a Christmas family gathering to remember,

Now I’d like to share a bit of my Christmas short story:

CHRISTMAS COOKIES FOR TRISTAN

Tristan tensed when he saw a striking auburn-haired woman hand her coat to a butler in the penthouse foyer and walk into the crowded living room. He’d never met her, he was certain, yet he felt instantly drawn to her. Despite his avoidance of female companionship over the past two years, his pulse quickened and the chatter of partygoers faded away as he watched her.
She wore a cranberry red dress with tiny cap sleeves that went surprisingly well with her mahogany hair. Smiling brightly, she exchanged air kisses with Johanna Cantrell, their hostess and Tristan’s distant cousin, who had opened up her lavish Park Avenue suite for this early Christmas party. So gracious of her, everyone agreed. Of course they all knew tonight’s party was aimed at garnering backers for the lady’s upcoming mayoral campaign.
The redhead had arrived unescorted. Was she a personal friend of Johanna’s or some high-placed business executive who might be convinced to throw her support behind the candidate? Tristan doubted it was the latter. She didn’t look old enough to fill such a role.
Curious to discover her identity, he edged his way through the crowd and followed the woman down a hall toward the kitchen, admiring the slender curves revealed by her subtly flowing skirt. Members of the catering staff buzzed past like worker bees, carrying empty food trays to be refilled and filled ones back out to the buffet table in the spacious living room, or salon as Cousin Johanna called it.
Pausing in the kitchen’s open doorway, Tristan leaned against the door jam and observed the redhead as she held out a large Christmas tin to a portly, bearded man in a white chef’s uniform.
“Please arrange these cookies on a tray and set them out with the other desserts,” she said in a low, smoky voice reminiscent of actress Kathleen Turner’s.
The man scowled. “Madame, I personally prepare all food for every event I cater, including the desserts.”
“Oh, but I baked these especially for tonight as a gift for Jo . . . I mean Mrs. Cantrell. She told me to bring them back here for you to serve.”
“I doubt that, young woman,” the pompous ass sneered. “That good woman knows I never allow anything prepared by another hand to be served at one of my events.”
“Are you calling me a liar?” The redhead’s voice shook slightly, either with distress or anger.
Having heard enough, Tristan strode to the woman’s side. “There you are. What’s taking so long? I want one of your famous cookies.”
She turned her head and stared at him with eyes as green as the emerald broach pinned to her demurely cut bodice. A light blush bloomed on her cheeks, lending her ivory features a delightful glow. “Do I know you, sir?”
“Not yet, but I’ve heard of you . . . and your cookies.” Lifting the rather heavy tin from her hands, he extended it to the uncooperative chef. “My good man, set out the lady’s cookies on your best tray. Mrs. Cantrell is waiting to try them. So am I.”

SKY TINTED WATER BY KETA DIABLO

Please welcome a special guest, Keta Diable, eclectic and award-winning author of multiple romance genres and generally all-around lovely person.

Author Keta Diablo

WHY I WROTE SKY TINTED WATER AND SKY DANCE
by Keta Diablo

First of all, I'd like to thank Caroline for hosting me today, and I'd also like to thank you for stopping by. Much appreciated.

Some readers have asked how I choose certain time settings for my books, or maybe a better question would be why? You've probably noticed there aren't many romance novels set during the Civil War, but it happens to be a period in our history that fascinates me. I think about the thousands of lives lost and the boundaries crossed when family members chose sides. It wasn’t uncommon to find cousin fighting against cousin or neighbor against neighbor. The Civil War was a deeply personal war for many, and yet in the end, many soldiers forgot why they were fighting.

It's hard to imagine a country so divided, harder still to think families were torn apart by principles, beliefs and ideals. Imagine drawing a line across the United States – the top half fights for one side and the bottom for the other. And suppose you had beloved family living in Texas and you live in Wisconsin? You can see where I'm going with this, right?

SKY TINTED WATER and SKY DANCE take place during the Civil War and a Native American uprising that struck terror in the hearts of settlers. This is a story about two people who lived during this turbulent time and persevered through separation, loss, triumph and of course, love.

If you read SKY TINTED WATER and SKY DANCE, my humble thanks. I hope for a short period you're transported to another time and place and I sincerely hope you enjoy the journey.

My best,
Keta

When Dawson enlists in the army to bring peace to nation divided, Rory’s world plummets into a tailspin. War, distance and time separate them, but nothing can dispel the haunting memories of their love. Not even death can destroy their fierce passion or a love so strong it beats the odds of the impossible.

DIANA MILLER'S NEW RELEASE, DANGEROUS AFFAIRS

DANGEROUS AFFAIRS, by Diana Miller, is the first book I’ve read (as far as I recall from Amazon’s  Montlake publishing. The romantic suspense is available in print or for your Kindle.

Famed soap-opera star, Abby Langford, has gone through a public, nasty divorce in which she refused to defend herself in the press although her ex cheated on her. She returns to her Minnesota hometown with her nine-year-old daughter, Maddie. Abby is able to purchase a home she longed for when she was growing up with her neglectful, abusive, alcoholic parents. She plans to write a novel with a female police protagonist, but writing is not going well. Soon after moving in, she is cleaning and discovers a previously hidden knife on which there is dried blood.

Even before leaving California, Abby had begun having nightmares of a woman being stabbed. The nightmares increase after she discovers the knife. She reports her find to the local Police Chief, Josh Kincaid. At first, he believes she is only seeking publicity for the novel she’s writing. When she receives hate mail, he begins to take her seriously. The hate mail seems connected to her nightmares, and also connected to the home into which she and Maddie have moved. Is she remembering an actual event? The hate mail seems to have confused the real Abby with the character she used to play on a soap opera.

At least Abby enjoys reconnecting with her old friend Laura, and her parents, who were very kind to her when she was growing up. Abby wants Maddie to have the kind of childhood Laura had (but Abby did not), but Maddie has a little trouble adjusting. I love kids in books and seeing more of Maddie would have been nice.

Josh is recovering from his own divorce, and has a young girlfriend unwilling to let him go. Once he determines Abby is genuinely the victim of hate mail, he tries to discover who is sending it. You could pretty well count on the worthless ex-husband showing up, and he does. But Josh and Abby have formed a strong romance.

Author, Diana Miller
This is the first book I’ve read from Diana Miller, and I would read a book by her again. By the way, this book won the Golden Heart for unpublished novels from Romance Writers of America.

REVIEW OF DARK NIGHT OF THE MOON

I thought it impossible, but Keta Diablo has surpassed HOLDING ON TO HEAVEN with the sequel, DARK NIGHT OF THE MOON. What a story!

Lauren McCain Gatlin is married to Brand Gatlin, but in love with his brother Creed. She married Brand when she learned she was pregnant with Creed’s child after Creed had left to fight in the Civil War. Through a terrifying ordeal in the first book, Lauren found her twin after being separated at birth. The midwife who delivered the twin girls told the McCain parents that only one twin lived, and kidnapped Sage McCain.

Winapaya may have
resembled Winnebego
Chief Ha-Zah-Zach-Kah
In the meantime, Sage married to Winapaya, from the peaceful Winnebago tribe associated with the more ferocious Sioux. Sage and Winapaya have two children and another on the way.

Lauren, her father, and her son Finn live with her Aunt Estelle and their servants. Sage and Winapaya live not too far away with the man Sage thought of as her Norwegian grandfather, Peter Pa. Lauren’s mother-in-law Polly Gatlin lives nearby also. No, no, don't be confused; when you read the book it all falls into place

The initial problem is that Brand is missing and presumed dead in the Sioux uprising that killed so many of Lauren's family and friends near New Ulm months ago. But Brand’s body has not been found. Lauren and her mother-in-law cannot give up hope that Brand is alive. I dare not reveal more to you for fear of spoiling your pleasure when you read this book. Let me assure you there are many surprises in store for readers.

Set in Minnesota in 1862, this riveting story is filled with beautiful imagery and vivid descriptions. Ms Diablo obviously immersed herself deeply into research for her work, and it rings true to the reader. I loved the characterizations, which ranged from humorous, stiff-necked, and honorable to evil. I also cheered for the mystical wolf. One of the characters is Crooked Back, a Winnebago woman healer who helps Sage. To show she has no fear of death, she chants:

I am part of the earth and stars
And the gusts of far and near
Of lush valleys and snow-crested mountains
Of flora, and fauna, and deer.

Not being a student of the Sioux, I don’t know if that is an authentic chant or not, but it certainly seems so in context of the book. In fact, everything regarding pioneer life, the Sioux, and the era rings authentic.

Although you will enjoy this stand alone book without reading the first book, the flow is so beautiful if you have begun with HOLDING ON TO HEAVEN and follow with DARK NIGHT OF THE MOON.

WELCOME KETA DIABLO!

Why I wrote HOLDING ON TO HEAVEN . . .

Hi everyone, and thank you so much for stopping by Caroline’s wonderful site.

Some readers have asked me why I wrote HOLDING ON TO HEAVEN so I thought I’d speak to that here. I’ve always loved history about the Civil War – the battles, the thousands of lives lost and the boundaries that were often crossed when family members choose sides. It wasn’t uncommon to find cousin fighting against cousin or neighbor against neighbor. The Civil War was a deeply personal war for many, and yet in the end, many didn’t know why they were fighting. I can’t think of anything more horrible than to have our country divided over ideals, beliefs or principles to the point we take up arms against our brethren.

Imagine drawing a line across the United States – the top half of the states fight for one side and the bottom for the other. And suppose you had family down in Texas when you live in Wisconsin? I’m sure you can see what the Civil War was one of our darkest times in history.

HOLDING ON TO HEAVEN is, in essence, about a woman named Lauren McCain who was raised in the deep South and moves to the North just before the war broke out. Her loyalties are divided. She’s fallen in love with a Northerner, carries his child, and yet her father and family hail from North Carolina. Now, toss in the Dakota Sioux uprising in Minnesota at the same time and the entire country is ablaze with fire and terror.

HOLDING ON TO HEAVEN is an emotional story about betrayal, grief, fate and abiding passion. If you like reading about the Civil War, I think you’ll love the story of brothers who love the same woman and yet, love each other too. Oh, yes, and there’s a few twists and turns in the story. There is a happily-for-now ending, but here’s the good news: DARK NIGHT OF THE MOON, the sequel to HOLDING ON TO HEAVEN was released! And I promise there will be a happily-ever-after for all.

May you all have a blessed week and many intriguing reads.
