HALLOWEEN IS MURDER!

Beware of all that goes bump in the night…Sean and Sara McKinley are excited about the haunted house they’ve set up as a Halloween charity fund-raiser, but things take a ghoulish turn when the reporter covering their story is found dead. With the media keeping mum about how she died, Sara’s curiosity is piqued, and she convinces Sean to take on the investigation through their PI firm.

But this case is not without its challenges. The police are actively investigating it, as well, and it’s not even clear that the woman was murdered. It will take a little cloak-and-dagger, dress-up, and finesse for the McKinleys to get to the bottom of it, but they aren’t the kind to give up.

As they troll for leads and work through the skeletons in the reporter’s closet, they unearth a few suspects, but they’ll need to carve out the whole truth if they’re going to find her killer. If they do so fast enough, there might even be time for a little trick-or-treating.

You can buy Halloween is Murder wherever books are sold, including the following popular retailers:

REVIEW OF JODI THOMAS' LATEST RELEASE, RANSOM CANYON

Jodi Thomas is one of my favorite authors. Since discovering her years ago, I believe I’ve read each of her books and novellas. In fact, many of hers are on my keeper shelf.

My favorite of her early books is TO KISS A TEXAN, part of the McClain series. Even though it was different, WINTER CAMP, the prequel to her current Ransom Canyon series, reminds me of that story because of Millie, the Apache captive. If you haven’t read WINTER CAMP, you’ll do yourself a favor to do so. You can find it FREE on Amazon at http://amzn.com/B00U77QXI4 and at other e-vendors.

Although a fictional work, RANSOM CANYON is named after a real location. In fact, the Ransom Canyon I know is a part of Yellowhouse Canyon, which cuts a giant slash through the Llano Estacado. My husband and I grew up in Lubbock, Texas where the canyon was only a mile or less from my home and only a little further from his. Ransom Canyon is further southwest down Yellowhouse and about twelve or so miles from Lubbock. The name is because captives really were ransomed and traded there when white settlers were new to the area.

In RANSOM CANYON, we are drawn into the lives of four families through an inter-twining story about events that unite them. This book has romance, adventure, and humor woven seamlessly into a book I couldn’t stop reading until I reached the end. One of the things I appreciated is the love of the land—the peace, the struggle, the beauty. Sunsets in West Texas are spectacular. Jodi Thomas paints those scenes with words that resonated with me.

Rancher Staten Kirkland is the last descendant of his ranch’s founding father, and a good steward of the land and the people who live there. He’s lost his wife seven years earlier to cancer and his sixteen-year-old son in a car crash two years ago. Since then, he’s a shell who only wakes to life when he’s around Quinn O’Grady. Theirs is a strange relationship to which each clings for a different reason. Quinn was best friends to Staten’s wife, but she has always secretly loved Staten. She always wondered if each time she saw him would be the last.

Lucas Reyes is a young man with goals who is working long hours toward achieving them. His interest in Lauren Bigman, the sheriff’s daughter, leads him on a course he never imagined. Lauren finds this quiet, hard-working young man to be the kind of friend she wants. Lucas, she learns, has the makings of a real hero. Even super-critical Sheriff Dan Bigman recognizes in Lucas a man worth trust.

Yancey Grey is an ex-con running from the past and himself. He counts himself worthless, but he wants more than his past provided. Safety. A family. A community. To stay out of trouble. He figures those things are beyond a common criminal like him.

Once again Jodi Thomas weaves her characters’ lives together into a story that draws in the reader and keeps him or her enchanted for the entire book. I definitely don’t want to give away anything that would spoil a reader’s enjoyment of this book. Savor each event and hate the wait until the next book, RUSTLER’S MOON, is available. The next release can’t be soon enough to suit me. Without doubt, I give this book 5 stars! If you shop at Amazon, the link for RANSOM CANYON is http://amzn.com/B00SFSL8N2  and it’s available at other e-retailers.

If you prefer a paper book, RANSOM CANYON is available in paperback and hardcover from brick and mortar stores and online.

Jodi Thomas, Author
In 2002, Jodi Thomas was honored as a Distinguished Alumni by Texas Tech. A fifth-generation Texan, she is currently Writer in Residence at the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon, on the edge of Palo Duro Canyon—an even greater slash in the flat Texas landscape than Yellowhouse Canyon to the south. A New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she has written over thirty historical and contemporary novels. She and her husband Tom live in Amarillo where they are renovating an historic home and keeping current with their two grown sons.

Reviews!

Here are some of the early reviews for RANSOM CANYON:

“Another winner…Tension rides high, mixed with humor and kisses more passionate than most full-on love scenes. Fans will be delighted.” Publishers Weekly starred review

“Compelling and beautifully written.” Debbie Macomber. New York Times bestselling author

“Terrific reading from page one to the end.” Fresh Fiction

“Jodi Thomas is a masterful storyteller. She grabs your attention on the first page, captures your heart, and then makes you sad when it is time to bid her characters farewell. You can count on her to give you a satisfying and memorable read.” Catherine Anderson, New York Times Bestselling author

REVIEW AND INTRODUCTION TO THE YA BOOK, WHO R U REALLY? BY MARGO KELLY

who are you (1)

Review of Who R U Really? By Margo Kelly

Review Written By Bea Smith, Middle School Librarian,
Fort Worth, Texas ISD

Fourteen year old Thea is a typical, middle class teenage girl. She’s well behaved, makes good grades, and comes from a loving, stable family. She feels her parents are too overprotective, as most teenage girls do.  She has a falling out with her crush, and to distract her and keep her out of their hair, her brother’s friend introduces Thea to an online role playing game. When Thea confesses to her mother that the altercation with a boy at school got physical, her mother signs the both of them up for self-defense classes.  Her mother talks to the instructor and expresses her concerns about Thea’s growing fascination with the role playing game. The instructor assures her mother that playing the game is a harmless pastime.

Then Thea is contacted by Kit, an older boy who is also playing the game. Gradually, Kit manages to separate Thea from her friends and family as he plays on her insecurities and her need for acceptance. But is he who he says he is?

Thea and her friends seem very real to me. I spend my days with teenagers and I could easily see these characters as my students. Thea was sympathetically portrayed as an intelligent, kind girl who was just naïve enough to put herself in real danger by taking Kit’s word that he is the person he portrays himself to be online. The pacing of the book is even, and the climax is riveting. I couldn’t put the book down.  It is just the right balance of tension and suspense to be scary, but not too scary or graphic.

As a school librarian, I am required to teach cyber safety. I am continuously amazed at how well my streetwise students can parrot the safety guidelines, yet how easily they fall into traps as we walk through the simulations in our lessons. The scariest thing is that Thea’s parents do everything correctly. They eat dinner together each night, have family night once a week, and monitor her activities. Before letting Thea play the role playing game, her father goes online to make sure it is acceptable. When Thea’s mother walks into Thea’s bedroom and sees Thea minimize her screen, Thea’s mother makes Thea maximize it so she can see what Thea is doing. Thea’s parents monitor her email and her cell phone. Yet Kit, who is older, manages to give Thea the advice and the means she needs to deceive her parents and put herself in deadly peril.

The side plot about Thea’s best friend and her battle with anorexia is a little distracting, but it is a good device to further separate Thea from her support network. Eating disorders are a real problem with adolescent girls.

I was interested to learn that Margo Kelly was inspired to write the book when her own daughter was nearly abducted by a cyber-predator.  Now, mother and daughter give talks together to educate the public about cyber safety and potential pitfalls in even seemingly innocent situations.

Margo Kelly is an excellent writer and I will definitely read more of her books and put them in my school’s library. Tweens and teens should read it—and so should their parents.

who are you

Who R U Really? by Margo Kelly

Thea's overprotective parents are driving her insane. They invade her privacy, ask too many questions, and restrict her online time so severely that Thea feels she has no life at all. When she discovers a new role-playing game online, Thea breaks the rules by staying up late to play. She's living a double life: on one hand, the obedient daughter; on the other, a girl slipping deeper into darkness. In the world of the game, Thea falls under the spell of Kit, an older boy whose smarts and savvy can't defeat his loneliness and near-suicidal despair. As Kit draws soft-hearted Thea into his drama, she creates a full plate of cover stories for her parents and then even her friends.

Soon, Thea is all alone in the dark world with Kit, who worries her more and more, but also seems to be the only person who really "gets" her. Is he frightening, the way he seems sometimes, or only terribly sad? Should Thea fear Kit, or pity him? And now, Kit wants to come out of the screen and bring Thea into his real-life world. As much as she suspects that this is wrong, Thea is powerless to resist Kit's allure, and hurtles toward the same dark fate her parents feared most. Ripped from a true-life story of Internet stalking, Who R U Really? will excite you and scare you, as Thea's life spins out of control.

Praise for WHO R U REALLY?:

"Kelly's first novel is a suspenseful page-turner with multiple suspects, a little bit of romance, and a strong but not overbearing message." --Kirkus Reviews

"Suspenseful novel that's guaranteed to give readers goosebumps--particularly as events heat up toward the end. A good choice for families to read together." --School Library Journal

"Who R U Really? is a fantastically creepy book that is surprisingly realistic and totally engrossing.... Once I opened it, I couldn't close it. Who R U Really is a satisfyingly unique YA thriller that left me guessing up until almost the very last page.... This book is very realistic and I really enjoyed the writing style." --Tempest Books

"Based on actual events, the story should be required reading for all teens." --VOYA Magazine

Excerpt of WHO R U REALLY?

When Tim’s eyes, bluer than an Idaho sky, met mine, my mind turned to mush. He towered
above everyone else at the bus stop, and on this cold January morning he looked cuter than ever
with his bomber hat and rosy cheeks. He shoved his sidekick, Josh, jokingly, and a cloud of
white air escaped Tim’s mouth.

My best friend, Janie, whacked me on the hip. “Omigosh, Thea. Here they come. Smile.”

Her words bounced in rhythm with her black ringlets. She adjusted her new fluffy snow white
parka, and even though it had a hood, she would never smash her perfect curls simply to stay
warm. The crisp air made the tip of her nose red, but the rest of her face remained alabaster
white. We’d been best friends for years, and at fourteen, having a friend made the ninth grade
bearable.

Janie hoped Josh and Tim would ask us to the Winter Solstice dance, but I just hoped to
speak to Tim without sounding like a complete idiot. Tim walked in our direction with Josh right
on his heels. They stopped in front of us, and everyone else hovered to watch the show.

“Thea,” Tim said. I wanted to reply, but no words came.

Josh approached Janie, and I fidgeted with my favorite fuzzy pink scarf.

“Jan-eee,” Josh said, dragging out the last syllable of her name. He eyed her up and
down. “You look like a giant fat marshmallow.”

TIME TRAPPED - A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL BY RICHARD UNGAR

time trapped tour

The high-octane sequel to TIME SNATCHERS.

Caleb thought he'd escaped Uncle's clutches and could have a normal life in 1968, but no such luck. After being forcibly returned to Timeless Treasures and his old job of stealing valuable objects from the past, he learns that things have gotten even more sinister. Training the new kidnapped recruits doesn't seem very important to Frank, Uncle's evil lackey, even though a few of these kids have amazing thieving skills and genius for new technology. But then Caleb figures out it's because Frank doesn't plan on keeping them around very long - or keeping them alive.

Stakes are high for all of the time snatchers. If only Caleb can convince the new ones to stop having fun with the technology and use it to save their own lives.

TIME TRAPPED REVIEW
by Bea Smith, Middle School Librarian
Fort Worth TX ISD

TIME TRAPPED is the sequel to the well received YA book TIME SNATCHERS by Richard Ungar.

Caleb is a likeable reluctant hero who genuinely cares for other people and is bothered by his role as a thief and a kidnapper. He just wants to lead a normal life. The main characters were well rounded. As with most tween and YA novels, they seemed to be older and more mature than their actual age. I liked that Caleb and his crew of time snatchers went to places with real historical figures. The scenes were described very well, and I hope that the historical allusions will spark an interest in history with the readers. Perhaps some of them will be motivated to find out more about the historical people and places Ungar mentions as the crew travels through time. Each chapter has a date and a setting so as not to become confusing to the reader.
Suspense was well paced. When the recruits decided to try to escape, I couldn’t wait to see if they made it and how everything would possibly work out for everyone. The twist near the end came as a surprise, and I was impressed with the way Ungar managed to wrap up everything.
TIME TRAPPED is clearly a sequel, not a stand-alone. I wanted to know more about how Caleb came to live with Uncle. That aspect of the book reminded me very much of Oliver Twist. Since the United States had been conquered by China, and New York was now called New Beijing, I wanted to know details about how this reality had come to be and how long it had been instead of just getting one or two sentences in passing. It did concern me a bit that not all the children escaped unharmed, but perhaps this aspect is a product of the post Hunger Games norm. I found that one of the characters, Razor, was too grating. Instead of an endearingly irresponsible and eccentric rebel, she was just obnoxious and I didn’t like how her actions put everyone else in danger.
Overall, I definitely enjoyed TIME TRAPPED. It’s well paced and well written. I want to read TIME SNATCHERS now. I think the novel will appeal both to tweens and teens. It doesn’t contain anything that would be unsuitable for more advanced elementary readers but it’s long enough for middle schoolers. I would definitely put both books on the shelves of my middle school library.

Praise for TIME TRAPPED
"Ungar’s follow-up to Time Snatchers (2012) offers more exceptionally good world building and character development—along with heaps of suspense..." - Booklist Online

"In the exciting follow-up to TIME SNATCHERS (Putnam, 2012), Caleb has been pulled back into Uncle’s band of time-travelling thieves—snatchers, as they call themselves. ...Readers of the first volume will certainly be interested in the continuing saga. Captivating characters, including a computer with human DNA convinced she is not a computer, and technological prodigies enhance the plot." - VOYA Magazine

EXCERPT - TIME TRAPPED

“Wait! What’s your name?” I call after her.

She’s going to disappear into the crowd. The beautiful girl with no name. And I’ll be left wondering . . . Or worse, she’ll say her name and I won’t hear it. Because the noise level in the hall is increasing and a hundred inane conversations are going on around me and despite strict orders from my brain, my ears are picking up random words like belch and freight train, and pumpkin, and I’m afraid that when she finally says her name, I’m going to hear mustard instead and then what will I do—

“It’s Abbie!” she calls out.

Abbie. I’ve got it. Abbie. Abbie. Abbie. Three times should do it. Just in case, I whip open my memory book to jot it down. A scrap of paper flutters out.

I pick it up and gaze at the big loopy letters. She gave me a note! I can’t believe it. I unfold the paper.

Meet me in the park at 4:00 P.M. We need to talk in private.

We do? A beautiful girl needs to talk to me. And not only does she want to talk to me, but in private too. My dreams are coming true. This is incredible. It can take years to get a note like this from a girl, and I’ve done it in just over thirty minutes. A school record. Heck, maybe even a state record. My picture is going to be in Sports Illustrated. Right next to the girl who shot three holes in one during her sophomore year.

I look up to see if I can spot her. But Abbie is gone.

richard ungar small
Author Richard Ungar

I was born in Montreal, Quebec. When I was young I wanted to be either an artist or a lawyer when I grew up. Now that I am almost grown up I still can't decide between the two. So I do both.

I also like to write and began writing stories to have something to go with my pictures. But now I just write…even without pictures.

Three of my four picture books (the “Rachel” series) take place in the mythic village of Chelm. Once you have visited Chelm, it is very hard to leave. You see, the people there are very silly. And, when you spend half your day being a serious lawyer, silliness is welcome.

I’m very excited about my latest project. It’s a middle grade science fiction/time travel adventure series, published by G.P Putnam’s Sons. The first novel in the series, published in 2012, is called TIME SNATCHERS and the sequel, published on September 26, 2013, is called TIME TRAPPED.

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of time travel and I wanted to write about it. In its earliest stages, TIME SNATCHERS started as a writing exercise in one of Peter Carver’s writing classes. The exercise was to write a story based on one of the images in Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book, THE MYSTERIES OF HARRIS BURDICK. I chose the picture called “Another Place, Another Time” showing children riding a sail-propelled handcar along a railway track that seemed to go on forever. For whatever reason, that picture screamed “Time Travel” to me.

I did quite a bit of historical research for both my middle grade books which was a lot of fun. In researching TIME SNATCHERS I learned a lot about ancient China, including how to fire porcelain in a kiln. For TIME TRAPPED, a trip to Scotland in 2012, taught me much about Scottish history, people and customs that I wove into my novel.

I’ve been asked which I like better – painting or writing. That is a tough question to answer. They are both important to me and I derive different but equal amounts of satisfaction from both. I have many ideas in my head for future picture books as well as novels.

The other thing I love to do is present my books to children, including doing storytellings. I’ve made author visits to most of the major cities in Canada and have also done readings in New York City, Tucson, Arizona and Shanghai, China. Connecting with my readers is one of the things I love most most about being a children’s author.

REVIEW OF OUT OF THE DARK

OUT OF THE DARK, by Geri Foster, is a fast paced, sexy, action adventure, romantic suspense available in print or e-book.  From the first page, readers are riveted to the story and can’t stop reading until the last sentence. I enthusiastically give it 5 of 5 stars!

To prove how much I love this book, I'll be giving away an OUT OF THE DARK e-book to someone who comments on this post.

Emily Richards is a mediation attorney who at times works for Falcon Securities. Her current assignment for Stromberg Chemicals has taken her to Moscow, and exhausting negotiations have just ended. Emily looks forward to returning home and a vacation at a peaceful Belize beach with her best friend, Brenda.

While in Moscow, Emily has tested an invention for her former fiancé, Stanley. The device is a camera built into a contact lens remotely controlled by a pen-like device. Her last night in Moscow, she strolls around and takes random photos in various light to complete Stanley’s test.

When Emily returns to her hotel room, John “Mac” McKinsey is there. His mission for Falcon Securities has gone wrong and he is stranded while assassins search for him. Against her better judgment, Emily is persuaded by the head of Falcon Securities to let Mac hitch a ride to London on the Stromberg Chemicals private plane. After all, since Falcon Securities works directly for the President of the United States, so who is she to fight that connection?

Emily fights her attraction to Mac. She’s worked with him before at Falcon's Dallas, Texas corporate office, but always he’d been in a suit and tie. Now he’s in jeans and a tee shirt and looks even more ruggedly handsome.

Mac notices that Emily no longer wears an engagement ring and figures any guy who let her get away is too dumb to live. Mac's interested, but she fits in the house-with-a-picket-fence-and-kids. He doesn't see himself in that picture.

There’s a lot of chemistry going on between them, but neither sees it going anywhere permanent.

Before they can leave, armed men invade her hotel room. Mac shoots the men and hurries Emily down the staircase and out. Emily is forced to depend on Mac to escape whoever is trailing them. Each time Emily thinks they are finally safe, another frightening incident occurs. Her anger with Mac for entangling her in a life or death struggle quickly turns to fear when the men pursuing them call her by name. How would they know who she is?

Mac and Emily are caught in a tumultuous race to escape with their lives and capture a crazed bomber and a vindictive drug lord. Facing their attraction is almost as frightening as the villains. Mac can’t conceive of any other life than his, and he knows love never lasts. Emily wants a calm, normal life with a husband who comes home each evening and is with her all weekend, not someone who risks his life on each assignment.

But living apart offers no peace. Can they tear down their own emotional walls and admit love is the most precious thing in life?

I have to admit up front that Geri Foster is a long time friend and one of my three wonderful critique partners. That’s why I am so pleased her first two books are released and have been so well received. Geri is a terrific author who is also a supportive and encouraging friend. But here’s the point of this disclaimer: Even if I’d never met or heard of Geri Foster, I would still love OUT OF THE DARK.

As one of Geri’s critique partners, I know the struggles she endured writing a book that is so fast-paced it leaves the reader breathless yet immensely satisfied with the action, the romance, the relationship, and the outcome. Once she latched on to this plot, she did not back away. Even when the FBI came to her home to ask why she had been researching “how to make a bomb” and “White House floor plan” at the same time. ☺

I’m so happy with this Falcon series. In addition to OUT OF THE DARK, OUT OF THE SHADOWS is now available. These truly are stand alone and don't need to be read in any particular order. Geri plans more stand-alone books in her Falcon Securities series next year, and I can hardly wait for each one.
