COULD YOU LIVE A DOUBLE LIFE?

Secret lives, hidden dreams, and forbidden sex in the Old West—what’s a woman of nobility to do when a handsome rancher tears through her world like an Owyhee dust devil?

Most of you know I’m a fan of Jacquie Rogers’ books. The one I’m reviewing today is my favorite, though. Of course, I think that each time she releases a new one. Readers can’t go wrong with any of her books, but I’m partial to western historical romance. I enjoy romance with action and adventure as well as a dose of humor. MUCH ADO ABOUT MUSTANGS has all of those in one very entertaining book.

Josh McKinnon has just recovered from the gun shot he received in a previous book. He is out of sorts, though, because his family members have trapped him into playing the male lead in the local production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, which will star the lovely and famous actress Lady Pearl Montford. He wants nothing to do with a snobby British woman, especially not after she insults his mother Esther and him at his mom's book shop.

The townsfolk are as excited as Josh is disdainful. To make his mood even worse, Old Man Linstad reneged on his promise to sell him his ranch and now is only deeding over half the ranch—and it’s not the half with the buildings. Oh, but he wants the same amount of cash. Now Josh has a bunch of fancy horses arriving and no barn to house them.

Lady Jane hides a huge secret that could ruin her career. She and her brother are really Pearl Jane and Jasper Evans from Kentucky. The pair formerly appeared in a Cossack’s trick riding show. She is especially gifted and loves to ride. For years she and Jasper have looked forward to owning their own ranch. They sent money to their grandfather to buy their yearned-for ranch. Their grandfather assures them he’s found them the perfect place.

In the meantime, Pearl and Jasper are searching for their long lost brother, Micah, who supposedly joined Pinkertons—or did he?  When it appears their lives may be all set, an evil man appears from their past and threatens their future.

Well, that’s all I’m saying because I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment of this superb book. I can tell you that Jacquie Rogers did a lot of research for this book.  She can back up everything in the book with examples.

For instance, in the late 19th century, many small towns had a theater and a thespian group. When a famous actor or actress toured, locals filled out the cast. Another example is the Cossack group. There were such groups touring. Wild West shows were all the rage and they often included a group of Cossacks as well as Native Americans.

I eagerly rate MUCH ADO ABOUT MUSTANGS as a 5 star read. The print version will soon be available. In the meantime, you can find the e-book online at the usual book vendors including Amazon, Nook, and Kobo. Grab this book--you'll be glad you did!

EXPOSE OF JACQUIE ROGERS

Dare I mention again what a great experience working with Jacquie Rogers was when we wrote our linked books for MAIL-ORDER TANGLE? While we kept closely in touch to keep our books in sync, each of us wrote her own book. Mine is MAIL-ORDER PROMISE and hers is MAIL ORDER RUCKUS. I can’t tell you how relieved I am that our effort pleased each of us as well as readers.

I’ve been a fan of Jacquie’s many years, since I read her first publication. She wrote fairies back then, which she still loves. (Don’t miss her upcoming story “Have Wand, Will Travel.”) She’s also written a futuristic time-travel which cracked me up, SINGLE GIRLS CAN’T JUMP. But my favorite of her writings are her western historical romances.

She lives near Seattle now but Jacquie grew up in Owyhee County, Idaho, which is where she sets her Hearts of Owyhee series. Those are MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALLS, MUCH ADO ABOUT MADAMS, MUCH ADO ABOUT MAVERICKS, and MUCH ADO ABOUT MINERS. Hard to choose a favorite among them, but I confess the first has a slight edge in my vote.

Want to know a secret? Of course you do. The cover model for MUCH ADO OF MARSHALS is Jacquie's nephew.

Another of my favorites is SLEIGHT OF HEART, the first of a new series. I can hardly wait for her next book. I don’t think she’ll be able to top Burke O’Shaughnessy as a hero, though. He and Lexie make a perfect couple. Another secret--Lexie is loosely modeled on Jacquie's math-whiz aunt.

You can see that between those books and all the short stories she does for Western Fictioneers (some as one of those writing as Ford Fargo) and Prairie Rose Press, the woman is a workaholic. If you haven’t read all of her books and stories, what are you waiting for?

ENDING WITH A BANG!

Here we are at the end of the WESTERN ROUNDUP GIVEAWAY HOP. Winners will be announced on Friday, August 1st. (Where the heck did July go?) To end with a bang, I’m reviewing one of my favorite reads for the past year. I’m all fangirl about anything Jacquie Rogers writes. I wouldn’t have believed doing so to be possible, but each of her books is better than the last.

**I’ll give away a copy of MUCH ADO ABOUT MINERS to one person who comments on the tour.

MUCH ADO ABOUT MINERS by Jacquie Rogers is the long awaited continuation to MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALS. I speak for myself as well as others of Ms Rogers’ fans. Daisy Gardner and Cole Richards in MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALS were a perfect couple. Cole is one of my favorite fictional heroes. Ah, but in MUCH ADO ABOUT MINERS, Kade McKinnon surpasses Cole in hero status.

Here’s the synopsis of MUCH ADO ABOUT MINERS, the fourth novel in the Hearts of Owyhee series:

Cupid’s bullet...
Hired gun Kade McKinnon interrupts a bank holdup and is shot by the teller, Iris Gardner, whose victims have a tendency to be the next groom in town. Will he be the groom this time?

Cupid’s bow...
Iris Gardner, a smart, independent bank clerk, fell in love with Kade when she was too young to know better. So when he walks back into her life and her bank, it's only fitting that she shoots him ... by accident, of course. But she’s a suffragist now, so his charms can’t affect her...right?

Cupid’s blindfold...
Kade doesn’t know Iris’s company is the one who hired him to escort a bullion shipment, and Iris doesn’t know Kade owns the security company, but they both know robbers are on their trail. Which is more likely to be stolen—the silver, or his heart?

Here’s my review:

Iris Gardner, the spectacle-wearing bank teller in Silver City (1885) is victim of an attempted robbery. In the first book of the series, Iris shot Cole Richards. In this book, Iris shoots Kade McKinnon.  She is not trigger happy, but is a confirmed suffragist who defends the bank against robbers. The fact that men keep getting in between her gun and the robbers is not her fault.

Kade has come to Silver City to help his family freight bullion from their mine. He has a reputation as a hired gun, but no one except his partner Phineas Stratford and, eventually, Sheriff Sidney Adler know Kade owns Prospero Security Transport. He’s hoping to meet with Ivan M. Bonnet, owner of the Bonnet Consortium that hired him to transport his family’s ore.

There is no Mr. Bonnet, however. The consortium is a group of women investors headed by Iris Gardner. They have been organized for a year and believe that after this shipment is delivered safely, they will each be independent.

I never give spoilers in my reviews. I will say that this is a fun book. Not only did MUCH ADO ABOUT MINERS keep me smiling, it is filled with action and adventure—and romance. The secondary characters are as cleverly crafted as the hero and heroine. I cannot conceive of anyone who would fail to love this book. If possible, I’d give it higher than a 5 out of 5 stars.

JUDGE NOT - WESTERN ROUNDUP GIVEAWAY HOP CONTINUES

Welcome to another entry in our WESTERN ROUNDUP GIVEAWAY HOP. Prizes are offered at each participating blog (there are 18 of us), so comment here and then head over to each of the other participating blogs and comment there to be eligible for other prizes.

Here at A WRITER'S LIFE, I'm giving away three ebooks of GABE KINCAID and THE MOST UNSUITABLE COURTSHIP, two of KATIE AND THE IRISH TEXAN, and I'm adding two of JUDGE NOT, the story for today. Winners will be announced on August 1st.

Elsie Parry and her eight mules survived the war, but can they escape the wrath of the Danby Gang? She lived alone for five years after the Recent Unpleasantness and was overcome with happiness to be reunited with her father. Now, his fondest desire is to leave all the bad memories behind and see the Pacific Ocean, so she agreed to head west. All’s well until they approach Wolf Creek, where they’re set upon by the notorious gang of ex-Confederate guerrillas… intent on proving the war is not over, after all.

This is not Ms Rogers’ first story involving mules. She has several books in which a mule becomes a secondary character. My favorite is MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALS, with a to-die-for leading man and a secondary character who rides a mule—a racing mule.

But this is about JUDGE NOT: THE MULESKINNERS #1. This story first appeared in the anthology HELL ON THE PRAIRIE, written by Jacquie Rogers and several other members of a western group called Western Fictioneers. This story is only 10,000 words, 38 pages, published by Western Trail Blazer. Don’t be deluded by the length. Ms Rogers packs a lot of adventure and a dose of her special sense of humor into this story. At only 99 cents, readers have a bargain!

First, choosing any book or story by Ms Rogers is a wise choice. In addition to fast-paced western adventure, romance, and a wry way with humor, Ms Rogers’ books offer readers a well-researched plot that always delivers a satisfying read. As you can tell, I am one of her fans and have been for years. I’m also a member of her Facebook group, PICKLE BARREL BAR AND BOOKS, and receive her newsletter, THE PICKLE BARREL GAZETTE.

I give JUDGE NOT: THE MULESKINNERS #1 a five star rating and believe readers will share my opinion. I also urge readers to dive into her Hearts of Owyhee (Idaho) series, beginning with MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALS. You can purchase the book at multiple sites. Here is the link for Amazon:  http://www.amazon.com/Judge-Not-Muleskinners-Book-1-ebook/dp/B00LMC6RS4/ref=sr_1_8?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1406287988&sr=1-8&keywords=jacquie+rogers

REVIEW: MUCH ADO ABOUT MAVERICKS

Jacquie Rogers is a friend as well as one of my favorite authors. Her Hearts of Owyhee romances are laugh-out-loud fun with plenty of mischief and mayhem to keep readers turning the pages to discover how her characters tackle the next obstacle. MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALS and MUCH ADO ABOUT MADAMS are the first two in the series. This post is about Jacquie’s latest book, MUCH ADO ABOUT MAVERICKS.

Benjamin Stoddard “Skeeter” Lawrence is an admirable and handsome hero for whom I cheered. But the heroine is one of my all-time favorites from any author. Janelle Katherine “Jake” O’Keefe is the only female ranch foreman in 1885 Idaho Territory. Jake runs a tightly controlled and highly efficient organization. Not only do her employees admire and respect her, they also like her. Well, all but Fred, who has a smart mouth, a lazy streak, and doesn’t like taking orders from a woman. There’s always one, isn’t there?

Ben Lawrence endured a miserable childhood, constantly belittled and bullied by his father, Ezra. When Ben was old enough, he was shipped off to Harvard. Now, thirteen years later, he has become a successful lawyer with the Boston firm of Morris and Graves. His boss, Creighton Morris,is dangling a partnership over Ben’s head as a lure to insure Ben weds Patience Morris. Although Ben knows he deserves the partnership without strings, he is contemplating marriage to Patience, but he hasn't yet proposed. Ben plans to take his mother, Mabel, and his sister, Suzanne, back to Boston with him. He should have known western women don’t like to have their lives organized without their consent.

When the book opens, Ben has returned to the Bar El Ranch near Henderson Flats, Owyhee County, Idaho Territory for the reading of his father’s will. Sad as it appears, no one mourns the demise of Ezra Lawrence, especially after hearing the ridiculous will he’s left. For separate reasons, Ben and Jake are angry at the will’s stipulations. Ben intends to contest the will, but something spurs him to fulfill the conditions set forth for him. Unseen forces are at work against Ben. Can he prove he’s strong and skillful enough to overcome the mischief and destruction designed to defeat him?

My reviews don’t include spoilers, so I can’t tell you more about this wonderful book. I can highly recommend you read MUCH ADO ABOUT MAVERICKS for yourself.  I give it ♥♥♥♥♥ hearts.
It’s available from Melange Publishing via Amazon:

Each of the books is stand alone, but I also highly recommend Jacquie Rogers's other Hearts of Owyhee titles:

Book one, MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALS

Set in 1885, Oreana, Idaho Territory. Daisy Gardner is a twenty-two year old spinster. Though she has nothing against marriage, Daisy does not want to wed to a rancher and end up stuck out in the sticks. She wants to be a female detective, just like Honey Beaulieu, the lead character in her favorite dime novel series.

Cole Richards runs a ranch on Sinker Creek. Two miners, Porker and Gib Rankin, have sluiced his ranch's creek into a muddy dribble. Cole makes the mistake of telling Bosco that if the bank in Silver City loans the miners any money, the ranch would then be in a world of trouble. Bosco, who is not too bright at times but is the best-hearted man Cole has ever known, decides to rob the bank of the miners' would-be money. While trying to stop Bosco, Cole ends up getting his leg shot by the female teller, Iris, and the duo find themselves on the run. After blacking out, Cole revives to find himself in the small town of Oreana and being sworn in as Marshal Sidney Adler. He cannot do much about the misconception except play along, or he and Bosco (who has been sworn in as a deputy) would be suspected of holding up the bank in Silver City. Cole plans to leave town as soon as his wound allows, but who should happen to be in Oreana than the Rankin brothers? Cole decides it is in his best interests to play marshal for a bit and find out what the miners are up to.

Book two, MUCH ADO ABOUT MADAMS

A suffragist schoolteacher with a hidden past arrives to teach,
Six shopworn whores cooking up plans for a better future,
And a hunky cowhand who inherited The Comfort Palace
isn't quite sure what to do with all these women...
Life isn't always comfortable at The Comfort Palace!
