SMALL MOMENTS BECOME GREAT MEMORIES

Please welcome the talented and Amazon bestselling author,  Keta Diablo. Remember to comment to be entered to win a Kindle Fire 7 on Christmas Eve!

What is your favorite childhood Christmas memory?

Funny how our brains work, isn't it? I think all memories are banked deep inside, yet some stand out as memorable. I'm not talking about traumatic events or even life-changing happenings, i.e., graduation from college, marriage, birth of your first child; I'm talking about seconds or minutes in your life that aren't very significant, yet take priority in our memory banks.

One such memory for me is helping my brother deliver newspapers on Christmas Eve. A light snow fell from the sky, leaving two sets of small footprints in our wake. The air was crisp and cool (almost balmy for a Midwest December), and in my mind, I see us chatting as we moved along, our frosty breaths hanging in the ether between us. We were eager to finish our task so we could join the rest of the family for the feast our mother would have waiting. After supper, we would gather around the tree and exchange family presents (Santa didn't come until morning at our house).

He thanked me for helping him when we were finished, and I remember saying, "Of course, that's what families are for."

There's nothing extraordinary about the scene above, yet decades later, that one memory is called forth from the dark recesses of my mind every Christmas season.

I hope you have a special memory locked deep inside that brings you warmth, comfort and joy this year and every year.

What is your favorite adult Christmas memory?

All the holidays when our children were young. Fortunately, my father-in-law recorded a video every year. He had the videos spliced, edited and combined and now we can all enjoy many Christmas' pasts while it runs in the background on Christmas Eve.

Is there a Christmas song that’s your favorite?

"Oh Holy Night" – Josh Groban

Tell us about your family’s Christmas traditions.

Christmas Eve we have a large meal where everyone contributes a dish (Italian menu usually wins out). The grandkids are always eager to open presents so that's number two on the agenda. We end the night with a family-friendly game of Texas Hold 'Em.

What about Christmas do you most enjoy?

Family-time, of course.

Is there something about this holiday that drives you crazy?

Yes! The commercialism. One year I was determined to show my teens that not everyone was as fortunate as our family. To prove my point, I called a local nursing home and asked for three adult names of residents that had little or no family. I took the kids shopping and asked them to choose gifts for Donald, Marguerite and Luella. We visited the nursing home on the afternoon of Christmas Eve with our arms laden with gifts. Unfortunately, Luella had passed on that week, Marguerite was ill and could not receive visitors, but the smile on Donald's face when he put the new socks in his drawer and refused to relinquish the sweat pants and matching sweatshirt (while we joined the other residents for Christmas Carols in the hearth room) was worth every penny spent. My teens were not impressed at the time, but now say it's one of their fondest Christmas memories.

Nursing home residents

What do you hope for this Christmas?

Tolerance and peace – tolerance for others in a country divided and peace in a very dangerous world.

Do you have a treasured Christmas food? If so, would you care to share the recipe?

Yes, thanks for asking! This one has been a family fave for years:

Pecan Crescents

PECAN CRESCENTS
Ingredients
1 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups chopped pecans
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour

SOJOURN WITH A STRANGER

A ghost haunts the halls of Stafford House. When Raine Brinsley arrives and accepts a position as a house servant, the ghost is determined to let Raine know who murdered her. Meanwhile, the lord of the manor, Derek Stafford, attempts to convince Raine to bear his child for a large sum of money. She needs the funds to return to her ailing grandfather in Maine and yet, something is terribly wrong at Stafford House . . . and possibly with the man himself.

Derek and Lyman Stafford race against time to produce the first male heir in order to secure the title to Stafford House. The brothers will do anything to win . . . including murder. Will Raine submit to Derek's offer and live a life of luxury or will she meet the same fate as his late wife?

SOJOURN WITH A STRANGER Setup and Excerpt: Told from Elne's POV (the hero's mother) the woman is delighted that the servant girl, Raine, has consented to play Christmas carols on the piano after the evening meal.

Delighted to see the servant girl, Raine, behind the piano, Elne sent her a smile. Derek said the girl had consented to play several holiday carols. He promised the experience would be pleasant and they would remember the night for a long time. Several compositions later, Elne had to agree. The girl played masterfully. Astonished by the diverse range in her repertoire, albeit without sheet music, she couldn't believe their good fortune. At the conclusion of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman, every member of the Stafford family had gathered around the piano. With agility and grace, the girl rose to a vigorous round of applause.
"Please, Miss Brinsley, will you play something classical?" Derek asked.
Clever man, Elne thought. How can she ignore a direct request from her employer?
"Mister Stafford, I'm certain they've heard enough."
"On the contrary, dear," Elne interjected. "It's been so long since anyone has played at Stafford House."
With a nod, Raine settled onto the bench again and flexed her hands. "I'll play my favorite, Moonlight." The haunting notes drifted toward the ceiling and scattered to every corner of the room.
With the last note, Elne rose from her chair. "Heavenly. I'm moved by your passion."
"Thank you, Mistress Stafford. The credit must go to my grandmother."
"It's hard to believe a mentor could one-up you on the piano."
Elne took a moment to study the girl. It made sense, an exquisite classical face to companion the music. Stunning came to mind, the dark green eyes, the thick auburn hair, flawless skin and sculpted features. She realized she had been staring when the girl looked at her with a question on her brow.
Elne recovered. "I've attended too many operas and concerts to count, but not one featured a pianist who played with such elegance and ability."
"You're too kind, ma'am."
Rising for the second time, the girl curtsied and made her way from the room. Crete hugged her as she passed. The strange curdling returned to Elne's stomach, and for the life of her, she couldn't name it.
She looked at her sons. Lyman reminded her of a lion about to devour the hapless gazelle, and the look in Derek's eyes she had never seen before. She tried to recall the months he courted Cinda and the days preceding their wedding. Had he looked at her with...love? God help him. Her youngest son had fallen in love with a servant.
She recalled the look Raine sent Derek when he asked her to play a classical piece. Had she missed something in the girl's eyes? No, she had made a deliberate attempt to study her after Derek's request and she saw resentment. Why would she feel resentment toward Derek? A muddied mess brewed, and Elne couldn't begin to guess the depth of the mud pile.
From memory, she ran through the words of Zaira's note in her mind. Whose bastard suckles at her breast?  Something nefarious rode the wind and she had to find out what. She looked at Julian staring out the window gathering moonlight. She would bet her mother's finest pearls her husband was involved.
Her head spinning with conjecture, she called out to him, "Dear, we must be going."
On the journey home, she thought about broaching the subject with her husband, but cast the impulse aside. The words of Sir Walter Scott tumbled through her mind, Oh, the tangled webs we weave, when we practice to deceive. Elne closed her eyes and drifted off to the soothing sound of hooves treading over the hard-packed earth.

A RACE FOR SAFETY -- CHASING THE DEAD BY KETA DIABLO

Book: Chasing the Dead
Paranormal Western Romance
Publisher: Keta Diablo

Tagline: A sinister ghost is out for revenge. Madrid, Deacon and Sacheen must stay one step ahead of the ghoul and reach the hacienda.

CHASING THE DEAD Blurb:
In 1884 New Mexico, Madrid Arrende finds herself kidnapped by the Apache. Determined to rescue her, her wealthy father realizes there is only one man capable of bringing her back alive...Deacon Bannister. Deacon doesn't give one whit about the large sum of money Don Erasmos Arrende has offered him to find his daughter. He  only cares about bringing the woman he left at the altar a year ago home.

A ghost is terrorizing the Apache village and the young maiden, Sacheen, has been banished by her People for unleashing Uday's wrath. Now, Deacon, Madrid and Sacheen must flee for their lives across the rugged New Mexico landscape with the evil spirit in hot pursuit.

Will they make it back alive to Madrid's father's hacienda or will Deacon lose Madrid forever?

CHASING THE DEAD Setup and Excerpt:
Madrid and Sacheen confront the ghost

Sacheen ignited Maddie's torch and both women scrambled over the half-wall to light the packets of sage. The moon glinted off a shadowy form sweeping past a line of trees to Maddie's right. Dios, the ghost! With gooseflesh rising on her arms, she called out to Sacheen, "Hurry! Light your bundles and go inside with Deacon."
A circle of fire from a dozen piles of sage lit up the sky around the shelter. The wind moaned and wailed, sounding like the sorrowful lament of Scottish bagpipes. What other magic and manipulations had the dead spirit learned in the underworld since Maddie last saw him?
With a look of startled horror, Sacheen shouldered her. "Do you see him?"
"I thought I told you to go inside. We must not show him fear."
"Do you see him!?"
Tendrils of darkness slipped in as the wraith advanced. Maddie shivered when his visage manifested in her line of vision. More terrifying than any specter she'd ever seen, a haze of gray mist swirled around his translucent form. A quiver hung from his shoulder stocked with stone-headed arrows—a sign he'd taken the form of a native from ancient history. Steeped in blood, his clothing hung in tatters around his massive frame—a vest made of animal hides, a breechcloth and fringed leggings. Maddie's gaze traveled to his painted, pock-marked face. Her insides quivered and ropes of tension knotted every cord and fiber of her body.
Bleary, unearthly eyes turned to Sacheen when the spirit raised a hand with claw-like fingers and pointed at her chest. The wind, much like the sound of women wailing, keened into the deafening silence. Fire exploded from the ghost's eyes—flames the fires of Hell couldn't compete with.
"Yes." Maddie fought to keep her voice calm and even. "I see him. His hunger for you permeates the air."
Sacheen shouted above the roar and chaos. "You are not welcome here! Hear my words, Uday, you are tats-an. You are dead!”
Maddie peered at the girl through the dim light. Uday? She spoke his name?
"It is I, Sacheen, and I do not fear you chidn. Hear my power:
Hinamaya hinamaya hinamay Chee Chi Yo
Hinamay chee chi yo hinna may chee chi yo
Hinna hinna hey ya hinna hinna hey yo

A cry of anguish and rage melded, knifed through the dank, still air. The maiden couldn't see him but stood tall before her imaginary tormentor, her aura shimmering like molten glass. "You are like the dust-storm, nothing but a shiver in the air. Do you hear me? I did not want you in life and will not accept you in death. You are yah-ik-tee, no longer with us!"

About the Book
The Apache kidnapped me to dispel an evil ghost from their village. If I tell them I don't possess the same skills my madre did, they'll cut my throat and feed me to the dogs. Celesta was the best spirit chaser in all of New Mexico before she died.

The most I can hope for is that Emmett, my fiancé, will rescue me. Is he capable of such a thing? Poppy must not have thought so because he sent Deacon Bannister to save me. Deacon…the man who walked away days before our wedding a year ago. The man who still melts my bones after one look.

We're running for our lives from Uday, the vaporous ghoul tracking us. He wants Sacheen, the beautiful maiden banished from the Apache village who travels with us. The warrior killed her father when Sacheen refused to marry him, and then Sacheen's brother killed Uday.

The ghost's powers grow stronger every minute on our journey back to El Vaquero...and so does my love for Deacon.

Excerpt
A shadow hovered near the fires, ducking in between stalks of cacti and other scrub brush. Maddie drew a deep breath and ambled forward with Elan beside her. Amid the dissonant chants and prayers, warriors brandishing spears and shields hollered into the gray mist. Maddie squinted, hoping to catch sight of the ghoul the others couldn't see. Only powerful shamans and spirit chasers had trained themselves to look upon the face of a dead spirit. A ripple of fear spread through her limbs and shivered down her spine when la fantasma appeared before her.
A mass of black patterns and swirls marred his enraged face. His eyes were hollow and black until a den of serpents slithered from the sockets–a deception the spirit had learned in his brief time in the underworld.
Maddie swallowed hard and sneaked a glance at Elan. Standing tall and looking formidable, she had to admire the man's courage. "It is you he seeks to destroy, Elan, to forge a path to Sacheen. I will go forth on my own now."
Elan shook his head, his expression one of disbelief. "Why would you put yourself in such danger? We wait and see what the dead man will do."
"No. It is what he wants, for all in the village to fear him. Only then does his true power unfold. I will meet his challenge; let him know I am here to banish him back to the dead." "Although I cannot", she whispered under her breath.
The ghost twisted and turned, retreating back from the fire, only to appear seconds later at another location in camp. He screamed and howled, the otherworldly sounds rumbling through the village like a murderous dust storm.
Maddie shrugged aside Elan's grip on her elbow and walked forward. "Madre, be with me," she said to the ground. The moon had not shown its face this night but a smattering of a million stars gave enough light for Maddie to focus on the grim outline of the wretch. "Lift up your eyes dead spirit and hear my words."
An inhuman screech sent a blast of wind in her direction. It lashed her face and whipped her long hair into a frenzy.
"You are small and weak. I do not fear you!" she screamed, bewildered by the words spewing from her mouth. "The wolf has sung your passing and the bear has grumbled low. Sing your death song and return to the underworld."
The wailing chants of the shamans echoed behind her.
Ignoring her warning, Elan suddenly appeared beside her, only to be struck to the ground when the ghoul unleashed a stream of lightning spikes from the sky. Elan moaned, clutched his broken arm and attempted to rise.
"Stay down!" Maddie ground out between clenched teeth.
Her mother's voice rode the crest of her fear. Be strong, Madrid, try again.
Her knees shook and her spine curled, but she took another step forward. "Your breath has moved to another world. You must remain with it. Do you hear me, dead spirit? You are no longer welcome here. Your relatives have said farewell and so must you, never to return."
A refrain from the Apache against her back bolstered her courage—a roar of cheers and the synchronized trampling of moccasins beating the ground.
Torrents of rain fell from the sky, pounding Maddie into the earth beneath her feet. Wet dirt spiraled up her nose and debilitating pain wracked her body. A hand clamped over her arm. When Maddie realized it belonged to Elan, a sigh of relief mingled with the cold blast of air surrounding them. Sacheen's brother pulled her against his wet body and crawled toward camp, dragging her with him.
A triumphant scream from the ghost rent the air, pitching the warriors into a cowering retreat. The cold, gray dawn swept over camp. Shivering with despair, Maddie turned to Elan. "His power is great."
Out of breath and still clutching his arm, he nodded.
"Maddie raised a fist to the sky. "We have failed this night, dead spirit, but we will not the next time we meet."

SKY TINTED WATER BY KETA DIABLO

Please welcome a special guest, Keta Diable, eclectic and award-winning author of multiple romance genres and generally all-around lovely person.

Author Keta Diablo

WHY I WROTE SKY TINTED WATER AND SKY DANCE
by Keta Diablo

First of all, I'd like to thank Caroline for hosting me today, and I'd also like to thank you for stopping by. Much appreciated.

Some readers have asked how I choose certain time settings for my books, or maybe a better question would be why? You've probably noticed there aren't many romance novels set during the Civil War, but it happens to be a period in our history that fascinates me. I think about the thousands of lives lost and the boundaries crossed when family members chose sides. It wasn’t uncommon to find cousin fighting against cousin or neighbor against neighbor. The Civil War was a deeply personal war for many, and yet in the end, many soldiers forgot why they were fighting.

It's hard to imagine a country so divided, harder still to think families were torn apart by principles, beliefs and ideals. Imagine drawing a line across the United States – the top half fights for one side and the bottom for the other. And suppose you had beloved family living in Texas and you live in Wisconsin? You can see where I'm going with this, right?

SKY TINTED WATER and SKY DANCE take place during the Civil War and a Native American uprising that struck terror in the hearts of settlers. This is a story about two people who lived during this turbulent time and persevered through separation, loss, triumph and of course, love.

If you read SKY TINTED WATER and SKY DANCE, my humble thanks. I hope for a short period you're transported to another time and place and I sincerely hope you enjoy the journey.

My best,
Keta
