'Love Cabin'

by Miriam Newman

He thinks she’s a snob. She thinks he hates women. It’s going to take a lot to work this out.

Blue skidded on the hardwood floors through the cabin, making a beeline for the back door and his pee place. Though Sandy assured her that he sprinkled her place liberally, he had to go at once to his spot in the yard, as if assuring the world he was back.

Marjorie followed, .22 cradled in her arms. Nothing was going to eat her pup.

Jack was inspecting his fence line. Alerted by Blue’s furious barks, he glanced up in time to see her carrying armament. “Hey,” he said, strolling over to the fence. “It isn’t that bad, is it?”

Marjorie smiled. “Coyotes and hawks. He’s still pretty small.”

Jack pushed back his tractor hat. “He looks like he’ll go about eighty pounds, so later you won’t have to worry. But, yeah, they’ll snatch him now.” He gestured to her rifle. “You know how to use that thing?”

“I know how to use this thing.”

“Just checking,” he said. “Those bullets carry a distance.”

“I won’t hit you. Not unless I mean to.”

He grinned. “Well, I’ve been warned. Um, I’ve got an entire freezer full of food from Saturday. Take anything you want; I’ll never eat it all.”

The thought of not cooking was highly appealing, as was the thought of a repeat. “OK. Let me feed the brat and I’ll come over.”

“You can bring him,” Jack said.

DEAD IN A DUMPSTER

Don't forget the Rafflecopter at the end of the post!

Leah Norwood Mysteries, Book #1

Cozy Mystery

Date Published: September 23, 2014

When Leah Norwood finds the body of Isabel Meeks in the dumpster behind her store, she can’t believe the police consider her a suspect. Sure, she didn’t like Isabel, but then again, neither did anyone else. Isabel had a condescending attitude and a bad reputation. As manager of the antique store, Patina, she had made a lot of enemies.

There is Patina’s assistant manager, the handsome and charming Trent. Isabel was blackmailing him. There is Patina’s owner, the aloof and influential Anthony Thorpe. Isabel was smuggling drugs through his store. And there is the entire drug dealing Cantono family. Isabel had lost a box containing heroin from one of their shipments. That is just to name a few and didn’t even include the stranger who was seen arguing with Isabel just hours before her death.

The police have too many suspects and too many soft alibis. Leah needs to prove to the sexy new chief of police that she had nothing to do with Isabel’s death.

Leah loves a good mystery. Can she find the killer before the police arrest her for murder?

It was a quarter to eight before I was finally ready to leave. I went to the bathroom, gathered up the trash, and headed out the door. The sleet was still falling, and I could feel the ice pellets hitting my head. I hurried over to the dumpster setting the trash down by the bin. I pulled back the large lid and propped it against the brick wall. As I reached down for the trash, I saw something out of the corner of my eye.

I looked into the dumpster and saw Isabel Meeks staring back at me. It took my brain a few moments to determine she wasn’t actually looking at me but sitting perfectly still, eyes wide open, a surprised look on her face, and a huge bloodstain on her chest. I had never seen a dead body outside of a funeral so I did what any rational, mature human being would do. I screamed. I then turned and ran as fast as I could back to the store. I fumbled with the lock a moment but finally managed to get the door open. I even disabled the alarm before stumbling to my chair. I sat there shaking and staring at the door trying to process the scene. An image of Isabel flashed into my head, and I bolted from my chair and to the bathroom where I promptly lost my lunch.

Still a little shaky and somewhat nauseated, I rinsed out my mouth and walked back to the chair. I don’t know why it took me so long, but it finally occurred to me that I probably needed to tell someone. So for the second time that day, I reached for my phone to call the police.

A WAR APART!

Don't forget the Rafflecopter at the end of the post!

A War Apart
by
Barbara Whitaker

Historical Romance / 20th Century Historical Literature

Date Published: November 11, 2020

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

  photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Anger at her cheating husband spurs grieving war widow Rosemary Hopkins to spend an impromptu night with an overseas-bound soldier. Fearing her small hometown would discover her secret, she makes him promise to not write her. Yet, she can't forget him.

Eager to talk to a pretty girl before shipping out to fight the Germans, Guy Nolan impulsively implies they're married and buys her ticket. The encounter transforms into the most memorable night of his life when he falls for a woman he will never see again.

While Guy tries to stay alive in combat, Rosemary finds work in a secret defense plant and a possible future with another soldier. Will she choose security or passion? Can she survive another loss?

“I need a ticket to Kerrville, Tennessee.” Her fingers squeezed the strap of her purse. “I need to get there as soon as possible.”

He clerk grunted but held his tongue as he pulled out a book of timetables and flipped through its pages. “Fastest would be to route you through Chicago. Then south.”

“How long will it take?” she asked hopefully, maybe she’d misunderstood his conversation with the man in front of her.

He looked up and eyed her over his glasses. “It’s just about forty hours to Chicago on the Zephyr. Another day or so going south.”

“That’s good. I told my mother I’d be there in three or four days.”

“Ma’am, that’s travel time. Heading east cross country, the earliest civilian tickets we have available are for next Thursday, if they haven’t already sold out.”

'What?" she gasped. “But you don’t understand. I have to get there.” She gripped the counter with her free hand, holding on for dear life. “I can’t stay here. I...I...” The words wouldn’t come. She couldn’t say it, yet she had to make him understand. “My husband...”

A man pushed his way to her side, a man in a uniform. “I have orders to report to Camp Atterbury, Indiana. And she’s going home to stay with her sick mother, isn’t that right, dear?”

Rosemary looked up into soft green eyes peering from beneath bushy brows. He nodded ever so slightly and for some odd reason she instinctively trusted him.

I always tell people that I write World War II love stories. In A War Apart I used stories from my own family as inspiration.

My in-laws met on a blind date while he was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. They married twelve days later just before he shipped out to fight. My father-in-law's experiences in Europe inspired Guy's combat experiences in A War Apart.

Already married when the war started, my father enlisted soon after the war started.  Assigned to the Coastal Artillery defending San Francisco Bay, he manned the big guns. My mother followed him and found a job nearby so they could be together. This story inspired the location at the beginning of A War Apart.

Writers are told to "write what you know." Since I was raised in a small town in Tennessee, I created a fictitious small town for a series of stories.  In my first novel, Kitty's War, the heroine came from this small town. The heroine in A War Apart, Rosemary, also comes from this same town and the two are cousins. I'm working on a third novel about Kitty's brother Milton. Each book stands alone, but, if you read them all, you will recognize the town and some of the family members.

Although the time period and locations are different, young couples have had similar experiences during the War in Vietnam, the Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Separation during wartime, grief and uncertainty plague Guy and Rosemary in A War Apart. Lose yourself in another time and place as this young couple deals with a rocky road to love.

Barbara Whitaker writes historical romances with a focus on the World War II era. Originally from a small town in Tennessee, she currently calls Florida home. You can visit Barbara's website at http://www.barbarawhitaker.com/

Providence Island Book 4

Mystery Romance

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

He's tired of running. She's looking for an escape. Can they find a home together?

Joshua Canfield spent the last year hiding from killers. He’s done things he can never confess, especially not to the loved ones he was protecting. All he wants now is to reunite with his family and live a peaceful life.

Lila Grainger has one goal in life. To earn enough money to leave Providence Island and a family with no regard for the law far behind. She never expected to meet someone like Joshua. He’s the finest man she’s ever known, and he sees her as a woman, not as a Grainger. But she can’t expect him to leave his family to follow her.

Neither of them knows that a new threat lingers on Providence Island. One that puts Lila in danger and could expose Joshua’s past.

Excerpt

The drive from the Canfield house to Stacy’s apartment passed in silence with the exception of several generic comments about the wedding. She didn’t seem mad. Hot or cold, Stacy wasn’t one to conceal her emotions. Either way, Ben wasn’t about to bring up the subject of Dana Canfield. What did prey on his mind was Canfield’s comment about Stoddard making it to the ER still alive. The story was nonsense.

What concerned him was the reason the story had been told. Was it matter of a night-shift nurse wanting attention? Or was the aunt trying to seed doubts in Lila’s mind about her new job? Using it as a ploy to get her unpaid helper to return home? Lila Grainger seemed like a good kid, which was probably the reason her useless family continued to take advantage of her. Canfield, whether he realized or not, was primed to ride to her rescue.

The Monday night trip he’d made to the Low Tide proved Lila was right about wanting out of that environment. Loose adherence to liquor laws, gambling in the back room, and multiple drug deals involving pot or pills. Plus a visit from Deputy Bret Madigan with a doofus named Jeffy, which could have meant “I have an eye on you” or “I’m here for my payoff.” All that in the time Ben pretended to nurse a bottle of beer and lost a game of pool on purpose. He had no doubts Lila was an innocent to any of the illegal goings-on. She probably suspected laws were being broken, but was either too naïve or scared to look for hard proof.

Did Jennie Grainger have proof of illegal acts fifteen years ago? Was she a participant who’d skimmed enough money to attempt an ill-planned escape with her daughter? Or had she been another innocent caught in the crossfires of the Grainger clan?

Ben pulled into one of the empty parking spots outside Stacy’s apartment building. He shifted the car into Park to the click of a seatbelt being released. “Do you still carry your taser?”

Stacy frowned. “Why would you ask that?”

“A bad feeling I have. Something’s bound to break loose with that dead woman they found.”

“You mean Lila’s mother.” Ben accepted the reproachful note in Stacy’s tone as deserved.

“Yes, her mother.”

“You think she’s in danger?”

“Possibly. Maybe the killer thinks Lila heard or saw something that night or during the days before or after the murder. The way we’re all being thrown together, I want to make sure you’re protected.”

“I have it right here.” Stacy patted her purse. “Along with the handcuffs you gave me.”

He ignored the scolding tone. This rebuke he didn’t deserve. “I did ask what you wanted for your birthday.”

She rolled her eyes at the teasing comment. “Not what I expected when I said something shiny to go around my wrist.”

He stroked a finger over the diamond bracelet circling her wrist, recalling the look on her face when she searched deeper in the gift bag as he’d suggested. She’d thanked him in more ways than he’d expected as well, looking mighty fine in nothing but that bracelet.

Introverted teacher versus unstoppable violinist. She wants to be alone. He wants her heart. Let the games begin…

After the unexpected death of her musician brother, third-grade teacher Adara buries her grief, avoids all music and vows to exist without attachments. Social solitude works perfectly…until she’s forced to share her classroom with the new music mentor, a man who rattles her carefully constructed cage and sparks emotions she prefers to keep chained.

Always up for a challenge, violinist Garret is a master of patience and persistence, and the minute he meets Adara, he knows what he wants. Her sharp humor and haunted eyes inspire him in a way he’s never felt before. He makes it his mission to chip through her shields and breathe her back to life—no matter how hard she resists.

Even as Adara struggles to keep Garret at a distance with each clash of wills, each smile he coaxes, each kiss he steals, her resistance crumbles. But when the past catches up with them both, they will discover that some promises are meant to be broken…and others are worth risking everything for.

Garret made things so easy, so simple, as if it were completely natural for a girl to break down at a community college music concert. As if it were completely normal to be disconnected. As if it were completely rational to surround herself in silence. She lifted onto tiptoes and pressed her lips to his, light as rain, a thank you for accepting her as is, for not asking for more than she could give.

He slipped his fingers into her hair and grasped her head, keeping her mouth on his. He curled his other hand around the small of her back and pulled her close, snug against his heat. Soft, seductively, his lips brushed hers and the world around them dimmed.

Adara leaned into his solid strength and fisted his shirt with both hands, everything inside her awake and alive. So much for keeping things out of emotional range. Right here, with him, there were no memories, no grief, no fear—only a mesmerizing man who banished her resolve and anchored her firmly in the here and now. She didn’t want him to let go, didn’t want to fade back into the silence.

C.J Burright is a native Oregonian and refuses to leave. A member of Romance Writers of America and the Fantasy, Futuristic & Paranormal special interest chapter, while she has worked for years in a law office, she chooses to avoid writing legal thrillers (for now) and instead invades the world of paranormal romance, fantasy, and contemporary romance. C.J. also has her 4th Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and believes a story isn’t complete without at least one fight scene. Her meager spare time is spent working out, refueling with mochas, gardening, gorging on Assassin’s Creed, and rooting on the Seattle Mariners…always with music. She shares life with her husband, daughter, and a devoted cat herd.
