JOSEPHINE DELIVERS FUN AND ADVENTURE

 By Caroline Clemmons

Reading a series set in a small town lets you become familiar with the characters and keep up with them as the series progresses. One of my favorite series is the Bride Brigade, consisting of seven books. Each prospective bride has a personality unique to her.

In this sweet historical western romance series, Lydia Harrison is upset at the number of men moving away from the town of Tarnation, Texas, because there are no unmarried women and they each want a wife. Lydia decides to do something. She takes her best friend, Sophie Gaston with her to her hometown in Virginia. Lydia places an ad in the newspaper stating her offer of travel and lodging to those selected to accompany her to Texas with the object of matrimony.

The first book of the series is JOSEPHINE, named after my grandmother. The setting is actually a lovely one in Palo Pinto County, Texas that my husband and I discovered on a Palo Pinto County Historical Society Spring Tour many years ago. I’m so glad we were able to take that tour because I fell in love with this location and have used it several times.

This is the newest cover
Blurb for Josephine

Josephine Nailor is desperate to escape a terrible situation. When the opportunity arises via a newspaper ad, she and her best friend slip away from their oppressive fathers and head for Richmond.  Neither can relax until they’re far away from their tiny hometown. With wealthy young widow Lydia Harrison’s help, Josephine and six other young women have a new life waiting in Tarnation, Texas.

Michael Buchanan is fairly content running his mercantile and being mayor of Tarnation. The town is dusty and tiny, but it’s growing. He believes it holds all he needs to be happy—except a wife. There are no available women in town, but he hopes Lydia Harrison’s Bride Brigade will offer a woman he can wed. He is immediately attracted to Josephine.

But Josephine has every reason to mistrust men in general and politicians in particular. Will her misgivings ruin her chance at happiness?

If you haven’t read this fun and adventure filled series, why not give JOSEPHINE a read?

COME TO THE BEACH

 By Caroline Clemmons

Are you looking for the perfect short summer read? I recommend THE MAN IN GULL COTTAGE for a contemporary delve into a sweet, fun, happily-ever-after story set on Last Chance Beach.

Bestselling suspense author C. H. Logan, using his real name of Carter Harte, values his privacy and anonymity so much that no one on the island knows what he does for a living. He stays in his beach home year around and only visits his condo in the city when he has business there. People on the island consider him the eccentric man in Gull Cottage.

Zara Webb has come to vacation on the island with her long time best friend. For two weeks, they’ve rented Sea Oats Cottage just up the beach from Gull Cottage.  Zara has a difficult decision to make and has two weeks to reach a conclusion. She’s weighing whether to accept the major promotion she’s been offered that would mean losing any chance of a personal life or remaining in her present job knowing the promotion would never be offered again.

Carter believes he’s impervious to tourists—until he meets Zara.

Here’s an excerpt from THE MAN IN GULL COTTAGE:

He cleared his throat. “This part of the beach is private.”

She paused and stared at him. “What part?”

He jerked a thumb in the direction from which she’d come. “See the three round wooden pillars? That’s where my land starts.”

She turned and shielded her eyes with her hand. “Oh, I thought those were to keep people from driving their cars on the sand.”

“That, too, but one has a large sign that says Gull Cottage and Private Beach. That should have been a clue.”

She held up a kid’s plastic sand pail. “Are you saying I should return these shells I’ve collected for my niece?”

“I’m saying you’re on private property. I don’t care if you collect sea shells, but I’d appreciate you not disturbing anything else.”

“Like what? You think I’m coming up to rob your house? Wait, what if I took a clump of sea oats? Or a handful of your sand? Are you patrolling?”

He extended his hand palm out. “Don’t get mad at me when you’re the one trespassing. I meant collecting drift wood and sea glass or destroying sand dunes. I’m simply out here walking on my beach.”

She straightened her shoulders and looked at the barrier. “Well, see that you don’t walk on that side of those posts.”

“Ah, but I will and I can do so legally.” He gestured broadly. “The beach where you’re staying is public. This part is private. See the difference?”

“No, I don’t see the difference. It’s the same sand.”

I hope you’ll read and enjoy this story. Have a great week and keep reading!

99¢ FOR MAIL ORDER MORIAH!

By Caroline Clemmons

I’m pleased to share with you that MAIL ORDER MORIAH is now only 99¢, book one in the Pearson Grove trilogy available in ebook and in print. This is a sweet, wholesome historical western romance with plenty of adventure and action. The cover is a recent change from the original.

When I was a girl, my dad (who was old enough to be my grandfather) used to tell stories about events in his family’s history—from the time the family came to Texas in 1876 up through the time he and my mom married. Dad was a fascinating storyteller and I was a mesmerized listener—no matter how many times I’d heard that particular story. Is it any wonder that I love writing books set in that time period?

Dad was next to the youngest in a family of one girl and seven boys plus an older half-brother. (Don’t you feel sorry for the girl?) According to my father’s stories, the brothers were a bit… um… shall we say rowdy? He often included tales of other kin, neighbors, and ancestors. That made for interesting tales that became fodder for a writer’s stockpile of images and characters.

I love the contemporary West as well, but there’s something about the historic West that keeps characters and plots churning in my mind. I’m grateful Kirsten Osbourne let me use her Brides of Beckham matchmaker, Harriett Long, for my MAIL-0RDER MORIAH. Kirsten’s series is a favorite of mine and I’m thrilled to be associated even distantly.

MAIL-ORDER MORIAH is set in North Central Texas in a fictional town named Pearson Grove. My dad’s first name was Pearson and he was born in Pilot Grove in Grayson County, Texas. Being a writer is such fun—we can make up people and places at will.

In MAIL-ORDER MORIAH, Scott Ferguson is the owner of a mercantile store in Pearson Grove. He bought the store using an inheritance. His management has improved the store. Now he needs a helpmate, a wife who will be a true partner and help in the store as well as keep the home in the rooms over the mercantile. A brief engagement with the town’s social butterfly has left a bad taste in Scott’s mouth.

Moriah Singleton emigrated from England with the intention of finding a job in a shop. She planned to send money home so her sister could join her.  So far, life has not gone as planned and she soon finds herself with no job. Fortunately, she learns of Harriett Long and visits the matchmaker.

Life in Pearson Grove presents numerous obstacles to Moriah and Scott. After all, we want them to overcome roadblocks, successfully build their romance, and live happily ever after.

If you haven’t yet read MAIL-ORDER MORIAH, I encourage you to read it now. The buy link at Amazon is http://getbook.at/MORIAH

MY IRISH LOVE AFFAIR

By Caroline Clemmons

The title might be slightly misleading. Ha. Actually, Hero and I love Ireland, but the only affair I had there is with Hero. Although, I admit I fell in love with Ireland even before I fell in love with Hero.

When I was a child, I loved the movies in which Barry Fitzgerald appeared. His Irish accent fascinated me (and still does). Recently, Hero and I re-watched The Quiet Man for the umpteenth time. We’ve seen it so many times we know most of the dialogue. I never tire of it, even though Ireland has changed since the film was made in 1952.

Barry Fitzgerald

When Hero and I were on our first tour of Ireland, we ate lunch at the inn where Maureen O’Hara stayed when filming The Quiet Man. She is one of my favorite actresses, plus I always wanted to look like her when she was young. We loved that tour that only increased my love of Ireland. Hero says he had to drag me onto the plane home. I did hate to leave but I deny that my heels left scuff marks in the air terminal as he dragged me to the plane. Several years later, we took a second tour for a longer time. We had planned to go back and rent a cottage for a month. Alas, the best of plans go awry. Between Hero’s Parkinson’s and my “parting gifts” from Covid, we won’t be able to rent that cottage. We have wonderful, wonderful memories of all our travels, though.

Maureen O'Hara

Several of the heroines in books I’ve written are Irish. The first was Cenora Rose O’Neill in THE TEXAN’S IRISH BRIDE, which is a sensual historial western romance. I did so much research for that book, but I loved it. Other Irish heroines in sweet, clean historical western romances are Gormlaith (pronounced Gorm lee and is Gaelic for Barbara) McGowan in THE RANCHER AND THE SHEPHERDESS and Betsie Galloway in MONK’S BRIDE. The hero is Irish in O’NEILL'S TEXAS BRIDE.

Maeve Kelly is my latest Irish heroine in LEVI AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Unlike most Irish women her age, Maeve is well educated because her uncle—a retired university professor—taught her and others. As his star pupil, he told her  he would send her to attend the university in Heidelberg where he had taught. Unfortunately, her uncle's death derailed that dream.

Maeve Kelly

Her father died about this time, and her mother developed cancer. A devoted daughter, Maeve nursed her mother until the lovely woman passed. Maeve is not afraid of hard work. During this time, she took care of the garden and the household chores. and the sheep. A cousin helped with the sheep. When her mother passed, Maeve sold everything she could and traveled to New York City to stay with her sister, Aine Sullivan. Maeve and Aine were best friends and Aine encouraged Maeve to come to stay with them. However, Aine and her husband and two children live in a tenement in a two room flat. In spite of so many signs that say "No Irish Need Apply," Maeve knows she has to do something different to accomplish her dreams of a family.

Maeve is determined to marry a good man. Encouraged by a coworker, she answers an advertisement for a mail order bride. When she gets to Harrigan Springs, Texas, she refuses to marry the man who has sent for her—as well she should. He’s a scoundrel but he insists she either comes with him or repay him for her fare. She has no money.. Oh, but that leads her to her story...

If you haven’t read LEVI AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, I hope you’ll get a copy of this sweet, clean historical western romance and learn the rest of Maeve’s story. The link to purchase the book from Amazon is below. Of course, it’s free in Kindle Unlimited.

MEET MAEVE KELLY

By Caroline Clemmons

Maeve Kelly is the spunky, determined heroine of the sweet historical western romance, LEVI AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Actually. she didn’t set out to marry Levi, but that’s a later part of the tale. Let me tell you about her background.

Maeve and her older sister, Aine, grew up in County Kerry, Ireland. Their parents rented a cottage and plot of land where they raised sheep, kept a few hens, and worked their large vegetable garden. The girls were their parents’ only children, though they had many cousins nearby. Growing up, they had a happy life mostly unaware of how little they had.

Maeve Kelly

At that time, it was illegal for Irish children to attend school. Maeve and Aine and several of their cousins were fortunate enough to be tutored by their Great Uncle Seamus O’Leary, a retired professor who had taught at Heidelberg University in Germany. Maeve and Aine were the most talented students, especially Maeve, who craved gaining knowledge. Uncle Seamus promised Maeve he would send her to Heidelberg University when she was of age.

In the meantime, Aine began stepping out with Connor Sullivan, a handsome and industrious young man. Then, Aine and Connor married and Connor continued working for his father. Maeve had always counted Aine as her best friend, and missed having her in the same home each day. At least Aine and Connor lived only a couple of miles away in the village.

Great Uncle Seamus died, and Maeve’s dream of a university education evaporated. His self-indulgent son inherited everything. Since Seamus had not provided for Maeve’s education in writing in his will, his son refused Maeve’s claim, though he knew of his father’s promise.

Soon Maeve’s own father died of a heart attack, and her mom fell ill from grief. Maeve nursed her mom and kept the sheep, hens, and garden going. Occasionally, an older male cousin helped her.

Soon after Aine and Connor's first anniversary, their daughter, Siohan, was born. Connor and his father's business in the small village was not sufficient to support two families. When Aine learned her second child was on the way, Connor made up his mind he and Aine would have more opportunity in America.

 Maeve missed her sister terribly. Aine wrote she missed Maeve, asking her to come as soon as she could. Maeve took care of her mom and the property and animals. After her mother’s death, Maeve sold everything left. That plus the bit her parents had saved gave barely enough to buy her steeredge passage to America.

one in which Maeve traveled

 Maeve had great hope that in America she’d find a fine a good job. husband, and a grand life. What she found were signs that said No Irish Need Apply and We Don’t Rent To Irish. She lived with Aine and Connor in two rooms of a dilapidated tenement. She slept on the lumpy couch because there was only one bedroom. They only had the couch because someone needed to sell it to pay the rent. Aine helped Maeve get a job with her at a fabric mill, but the work was dangerous, the hours long, and the pay pitifully small.

New York tenement

When Aine announced she was expecting their third child, Maeve knew how, but she had to find somewhere else to live. But where? And how? Although she admired kind and hard-working Connor, she had met no unwed men who caught her eye. When their neighbor Doreen told them of her cousin happy results from answering an ad for a mail order bride, Maeve deliberated about doing the same. Something must change. She resolved to better her life, even if it meant traveling to Texas.

That’s how Maeve Kelly came to arrive in Harrigan Springs, Texas, and when her story really begins. To find out the rest, buy your copy (free in kindle unlimited) from Amazon.

99¢ SALE AND $5 AMAZON GIFT CARD FOR SOMEONE!

By Caroline Clemmons

I’m still celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day. MURDOCH’S BRIDE is only 99¢ today through March 22nd. MURDOCH’S BRIDE is book 3 of my Loving A Rancher Series. MURDOCH’S BRIDE was born as part of Deborah Holland’s Kindle World, in which I enjoyed writing in tremendously. But then Amazon killed the Kindle Worlds. (Still so sad that happened.) Details for the prize are at the end of this post.

MURDOCH’S BRIDE won an Amazon Bestseller bonus. Yes, Amazon gives bonuses for bestsellers. I don’t mean every orange ribbon you see. The bestsellers to which I’m referring are books that meet some higher criteria known only to Amazon. I’m sure my book was at the bottom of the scale, but I was thrilled to get a bonus!

When the Kindle Worlds were killed by Amazon, I changed the characters and place names that belonged to Deborah Holland and her Kindle World and kept the book in publication. This is such a fun book I couldn’t abandon it. Recently, I changed the covers of books in the Loving A Rancher Series. If you haven’t yet read MURDOCH’S BRIDE, now is your chance to do so at a bargain price.

Warning: MURDOCH’S BRIDE is a sweet, clean western historical romance, but it does contain a curse word, which is damn. As you can see in the excerpt, sometimes it’s appropriate.

Stranded in the snow…

Charity Kelso is accompanying her fussy Aunt Edwina from New York to Oregon when their train is wrecked and the passenger cars burn. Cottonwood Springs doesn’t have a hotel, so passengers are parceled out to townsfolk’s homes. No one wants anything to do with complaining Aunt Edwina. That also leaves Charity and their newly widowed friend Amelia nowhere to stay until the tracks are repaired. A new blizzard is headed their way, so what are they to do?

Logan Murdoch and his brother came to town to restock before the next storm arrives. Against Logan’s better judgment, the sheriff convinces him to take three “innocent, stranded women” to Murdoch Ranch. Other than their housekeeper-cook, a woman hasn’t set foot in the Murdoch home in the twenty years since Logan’s mother abandoned them. He doesn’t expect his father to welcome these unwanted visitors.

Both Charity and Logan are surprised at the events that unfold. How could this have happened?

https://www.amazon.com/Murdochs-Bride-Loving-Rancher-Book-ebook/dp/B07G2JY77F/

The Murdoch men came inside as Charity came down the stairs from fetching a clean handkerchief for her aunt.

Logan said, “Ornery old cow.”

Charity gave Edwina her hanky and stomped toward him. “Mr. Murdoch, may I speak to you privately?”

Surprise showed on his face. “Uh, sure. Guess we can go into the office.”

He led the way to a room she hadn’t seen, obviously where the ranch records were kept. “Will this do, Miss Kelso?”

She closed the door behind them. “Logan Murdoch, you have your nerve calling my aunt names. For your information, she’s had a horrible life and no one, not her selfish parents, not her cheating husband, not even her only son ever loved her. And, that includes my father, who’s her younger brother.”

He stood looking poleaxed. “I never said—”

She stabbed at his chest with her forefinger. “I heard what you said. You called her an ornery old cow. She may be difficult sometimes, but if you knew everything about her you’d understand and be patient and forgiving. You can make fun of me all you want, emphasizing that I’m Miss and not Mrs., but you treat her with the respect someone her age deserves.”

He moved her hand away from his chest and leaned into her face. “You might try practicing some of the charity you’re named for and at least give me a chance to defend myself. I was talking about our cow. In case you haven’t noticed, I have milk all over my legs and boots because she knocked against the pail.”

Heat rushed to Charity’s cheeks. She stepped back. “Oh.”

He stood with his hands on his hips. “That’s a good comeback, Miss Kelso.”

She sensed a blush’s heat spreading across her face and neck. “Once again, I must ask your pardon.”

“When you’re angry, sparks fly from those big blue eyes. Reckon I’m lucky I wasn’t set on fire.” He closed the short distance between them and he brushed a hand gently along her cheek.

She knew he was going to kiss her but stood frozen in place. He tilted her head up to meet his and pressed his lips on hers. She thought he would withdraw then, but his arms were around her, pulling her closer. As if they had minds of their own, her arms encircled him.

When they broke apart, he stared at her with a horrified expression. “Damn.”

With the realization she’d cooperated in the kiss and even enjoyed it, horror shot through her. “My stars.”

She took a deep breath and left the office.

To enter for the  $5 AMAZON GIFT CARD, leave a comment telling how long it had been since a woman had been in the ranch house. The winner will be chosen randomly from the commenters.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! Stay safe, be kind, and keep reading!

NEW PREORDER -- JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE

Join me in announcing JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE is now available for preorder from Amazon for release on September 29. This is book 2 of the sweet, small town, family-oriented Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides Series. It will be available in e-book and print, and will be enrolled in Kindle Unlimited.

https://www.amazon.com/Jesse-Order-Bride-Caroline-Clemmons-ebook/dp/B0BD64JC1D/

Book 2 of the series

Sheriff Jesse Cameron is from Scotland. He believes in the law and in justice, and does his best to serve Harrigan County citizens. Rosalin Arnold hates the way she’s forced to live and vows to improve her life. After months of plotting, she seizes her chance.

Here’s the blurb:

What will happen when her lawman husband learns the truth about her criminal past?

Sheriff Jesse Cameron is dedicated to uphold the law of his adopted country. After leaving Scotland, he came to Texas, and learned he liked the place and the people—at least, most of them. He keeps Harrigan County free of troublemakers with his “strict but fair” policy. Now that he has a steady job and has bought a house, he figures it’s time to find a wife and start a family. He and his best friend write to the same matchmaker, hoping their brides will be sisters or friends. Jesse hopes his wife will provide a peaceful home and welcome him each evening with a good meal and a warm smile.

Growing up in an orphanage left Rosalin Arnold too naïve to avoid being trapped in the clutches of an evil man who has her picking pockets. Those who’ve tried to escape him have always failed and were severely punished—or killed. In spite of that, Rosalin has been plotting to get away and seizes her chance to escape. She takes her best friend with her, and also an adorable boy of eight. All she and her friends want is a home where they can live without constant fear. She prays she has successfully evaded the devil who has tentacles everywhere.

What will happen when her past catches up with her, and she’s forced to confess everything to Jesse? Of course Jesse will defend her, but will he forgive her lies?

Rosalin Arnold

I hope you’ll preorder JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. This entire series is set in fictional Harrigan County, which I squeezed in between the real Bandera and Medina Counties. I like this part of Texas, and hope you’ll enjoy visiting via reading. Books open new worlds.

POLKA WITH PAULINE!

Saturday, March 28,  is another book birthday for me! POLKA WITH PAULINE, The Matchmaker’s Ball, book 8, is available in e-book, is in KU, and will soon be in paperback. This stand-alone is a sweet western historical romance. It's on preorder until its release.

Are you getting cabin fever? If you’re at home, why not curl up with a book? There’s a vacation waiting within the pages. Come travel with us!

Here’s the blurb summary of POLKA WITH PAULINE set in the nineteenth century:

Pauline Brubaker arrives in Creede, Colorado from Denver to help care for her aunt while the aunt’s broken leg heals. Her aunt and uncle are special favorites of Pauline’s. They’ve recently retired to Creede due to her uncle’s heart problems. Pauline’s hesitant to give in to her attraction to Creighton because she will only be in Creede the few weeks her aunt needs her help. Her parents and her life are in Denver.

Creighton Reed makes amazing pieces of furniture. They sell as fast as he can create them. Creighton meets Pauline when her aunt and the sponsor of the Matchmaker Balls conspire to have them attend a dance together. He is immediately attracted to Pauline but she gives mixed signals. Later a man who claims to be her fiancé warns Creighton away from her. Creighton is too smart to fall for that.

Two fire bombs destroy Creighton’s workshop and his living quarters in the back, and he’s almost trapped inside. Fortunately, he has purchased a house in order to marry Pauline and had moved some of his things there before the fire. Who sent firebombs into his workshop?  The arsonist must be caught before Pauline, her aunt and uncle, and Creighton are safe.

The Universal Amazon link is https://mybook.to/Pauline

Here’s an excerpt:

Pauline and Creighton were playing chess when the doorbell chimed. He’d been calling on her two or three times a week.
Uncle Henry folded his newspaper. “Not expecting anyone. I’ll see who that can be.”
Pauline froze when she heard the visitor’s voice. What on earth was he doing here?
Creighton looked up from the chess board and stared at her face. “I should go.”
She reached across the game table and laid her hand on his. “There’s really no reason to leave. Please stay.”
Henry led the way into the parlor. “Jasper Tabor, this is Creighton Reed, a local friend.”
Jasper surveyed the room. “I hope I’m not interrupting your evening.”
He was a handsome man whose attire was neat and of the latest style. His light brown hair was sleek and his handlebar mustache waxed to perfection. She could find no fault with his appearance. She couldn’t pinpoint a single reason for her distrust. Perhaps it was the predatory look in his brown eyes.
Uncle Henry gestured to her and Creighton. “Not at all, Jasper. Creighton is a good friend. Have a seat. What brings you to Creede?”
Jasper sat in the new rocking chair. “Curiosity mostly. I wondered how you’re getting on here. Fred thought I should check on Pauline.”
Pauline stared at him. “Did Papa send you to check up on me?”

I hope this finds you well and content. My routine hasn’t changed much. Hero and I don’t have small children in the house to stay home from school, Hero is retired, and we have enough groceries for a week or two—more if we eat pinto beans and cornbread.

Take care and stay inside your home or in your yard. Stay well, my friends!

#NEW RELEASE -- GARNET #GIVEAWAY

Yee Haw! Today is release day for GARNET, The Widows of Wildcat Ridge, book 9. I’m so excited about this book and I hope readers will be too. Writing in a multi-author series is fun but not easy. Everything has to be coordinated so none of us contradicts the others.

Don’t miss the giveaway mentioned at the end of this post.

Garnet is a spunky heroine. She was brave enough to leave Georgia to become the mail-order bride of Michael Chandler and help him operate his Crystal Cafe. Only nine months after she arrived, a terrible disaster occurred and Mike, his brother Joe, and sister-in-law Dessie were killed. This left Garnet managing the café on her own, taking charge of her niece and nephew, and grieving for those who died.

She’s not one to have a pity-party. Instead, she works hard to fulfill her duties at the Crystal Café and take care of Hyacinth, age 6, and Joey, age 8. She’s devoted to these precious children and even enjoys the café—if only she had someone to help her. Then, she has a prowler in her rooms above the café. What if the children or she were hurt? Who prowled through her things and why?

Adam Bennett is a rugged bounty hunter who slips up and is waylaid by the man he’s chasing along with his two cronies. After a severe beating, they kick him into a deep ravine and make off with his horse, pack mule, and all his gear. Eventually he struggles out of the ravine and down the mountain to Wildcat Ridge and the Crystal Café.  Will a paper marriage help or hinder his search?

Here’s an excerpt when Adam show up at the café the day after the prowler:
A loud rap at the back door startled her. She kept the curtains closed unless they were serving food and couldn’t see who had knocked.
Joey grabbed his stick. “Don’t answer it. Might be the robber there.”
She wiped her hands on her apron. “Or a friend who needs something.” Joey didn’t know the Colt .45 was in her apron pocket. After taking a deep, bracing breath, she opened the door.
The dirtiest man she’d ever seen stood there. His beard was as dirty as his clothes. Fresh cuts showed through the mud on his face. He was tall and broad-shouldered but looked as if he could barely stand.
“Ma’am, my name is Adam Bennett. Please don’t be put off by my appearance. I was robbed up the mountain a ways and lost all my gear. I’m mighty hungry. If you need anything done, I’d like to work for a meal.”
Joey was by her side. “He isn’t the one from last night.” All the same, her nephew kept his pick handle in his hand.
“We’re the Chandlers. Come in and sit down. Wait, wash your hands and face at the sink first. You can’t handle food while you’re that filthy.”
While the man washed his hands, she filled a plate from leftovers and poured a cup of coffee. “Joey, please get my medicine box from upstairs.”
He leaned close. “I don’t think I should leave you alone while he’s here.”
Joey took being man of the family seriously. “Oh, all right. Hyacinth, would you get the medicine box for me?”
“How come he doesn’t have to and I do?” Usually sweet, Hyacinth was a bit spoiled and definitely jealous of her brother.”
“Because Mr. Bennett is injured and needs our help. Please hurry.”
Her niece stomped up the stairs while muttering under her breath, her golden curls bouncing with each step.
When Garnet glanced at the man, she saw he’d wolfed down his food. “I’ll get you more. How long since you’ve eaten?”
“Not sure how long I was in and out of consciousness up there. They attacked me on Saturday. What day is this?”
“Monday. No wonder you’re hungry.” She set another plate of food in front of him and refilled his cup.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had a lot of fun with Garnet and Adam, the children, the children’s grandparents, and the people in Wildcat Ridge. The villain is an especially dangerous one but our hero and heroine are up to the challenge—we hope!
The universal Amazon buy link is http://getbook.at/GarnetWOWR
GARNET is available in e-book, print, and is free in KU. I hope you’ll read and enjoy GARNET.
To celebrate the release, I’m offering a $5 Amazon gift card to three people who comment here.
MERRY FARMER'S CREATIVE IDEA!
What a pleasure to feature my friend, Merry Farmer. She lives up to her name because she has always been cheerful when I've seen her. Merry has come up with what I think is a clever idea. She publishes two versions of each of her latest books—one spicy and one sweet. No matter what type book you enjoy, she has one for you. Now here’s her interview:
Please tell us about growing up. Siblings? Locale?
I was raised by a single mom after my dad left when I was six and my little brother, Stewart, was 3. It was pretty tough for us, because this was 1979 and we lived in a pretty conservative town outside of Philly where practically no one ever got divorced. My mom was wonderful, though. She did everything she could for us, including getting a job as the secretary of our elementary school so that she could be with us pretty much all day, every day. When I was in 5th grade, we moved in with my grandmother after my granddad died. I never really connected with her (that’s a long, long story!), but we lived in a huge, beautiful house built in 1917. It’s our family home. My mom grew up there, and my granddad and his siblings grew up there. It’s still in the family too. Right now my aunt lives there, but I happen to know what her will says, and let’s just say I’d better save my pennies for upkeep so that it stays in the family!
Growing up, I was definitely shy and, well, shell-shocked from a lot of sad things that happened, including my dad leaving and my granddad dying. I loved to read and write from the moment I learned, though, and I escaped in books a lot. I started writing in third grade when I realized that I didn’t have to wait for my teacher to assign a creative writing project to write something. Best day of my life!
Wow, you look a lot like your mom. Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?
I enjoy a lot of stuff across several genres. Of course, I loved the Harry Potter books and think J.K. Rowling is pretty amazing in person too. I’ve always been a big fan of L.M. Montgomery too, and not just for her Anne books. As much as I love Anne, I actually liked the Emily books a little more. As far as romance, I’ve been working my way through Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series this year and loving them. And I love Courtney Milan, Elizabeth Boyle, and Elizabeth Hoyt.
When you’re not writing, what’s your favorite way to relax and recharge? Hobbies?
I am a big knitter. Of course, this year that’s become a problem. I ended up with an overuse injury in my forearms from all the typing and knitting (sort of like carpal tunnel, but it’s the muscles that are strained, not the tendons). I had to cut back on knitting to preserve my writing.
Where do you prefer to write?
Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop? I always have music playing in my apartment, no matter what I’m doing. Usually it’s classical. There’s a local classical and jazz station in Philly that I love, WRTI, but they have news reports every few hours, so I’ve stopped listening during election season, because I just can’t take it. I’ve been listening to BBC3 (BBC’s classical station) online and another online classical station out of Princeton, NJ lately.
I listen to classical music when I'm writing. I’m a plotter and know the answer to this but will ask anyway: Are you a plotter or a panzer?
I’m definitely a plotter! In fact, I think I’m the biggest, most extensive plotter of any of the authors I know. The process I use is multiple steps with character sheets and scene cards and all sorts of things. But it means that once I’ve outlined a book, I can draft it in no time, and I have fewer large issues that I need to work on in editing because I’ve sorted them out before I started writing.
Do you do your research before you begin a new project, or as you go along?
Well, that’s an interesting question. I majored in History twice in college, so I learned a lot about the time periods in which I write back then. I also like to read history books for fun. So a lot of the time, reading the history books is what sparks story ideas to begin with.
Tell us about your writing schedule. Do you set goals? Do you write daily?
Because I’m a full-time writer, I treat writing as my job. So I have “working hours” during the morning and early afternoon, and I always set myself a word count for the day. I’m a pretty disciplined person, so I am able to keep to that schedule.
I set myself word count for the day. Tell us something about yourself that might surprise readers.
I was really unpopular in school and was bullied A LOT. It was pretty miserable. But I always knew that I was destined for something greater. It took a lot of work—and a lot of therapy—but I was able to achieve my dreams! The moral of the story is that you should never listen to who other people tell you to be. Always believe in yourself and keep your eyes on the prize.
I can’t imagine you being unpopular because everyone loves you now. What do you hope your writing brings to readers?
Really, I just want people to be entertained. I tend to fall in love with my characters and the world I put them in, and I want other people to fall in love with those worlds and people too.
Perfect answer, Merry. What advice would you give to unpublished authors?
If you know that this is what you really want to do, that you can’t imagine yourself doing anything else, then keep your nose to the grindstone and keep working, no matter what anyone else may tell you. But be prepared to make sacrifices in order to reach your goals. I was working a full-time job and writing for hours every day for a couple of years when I first started. That meant almost no social life. But I was willing to do it because I knew it would get me to the place where I wanted to be.
Tell us about your latest release.
My latest release is the eighth book in my Brides of Paradise Ranch series. Talk about a town and a bunch of characters, including secondary characters, that I love! This is totally it. Here’s the blurb for the latest book, His Secret Bride (Spicy Version)/Bonnie: The Secret Bride (Sweet Version)
Bonnie Horner, madam of Haskell, Wyoming’s house of ill repute, Bonnie’s Place, has worked hard to make a better life for the girls unfortunate enough to end up in her employ. In fact, her Place serves more as a shelter and refuge than a brothel. For years, Bonnie has sacrificed her own happiness for the sake of her girls, going so far as to manufacture a sham engagement to local cattle baron Rex Bonneville in order to keep her Place financed. But when Rex demands the wedding take place, Bonnie finds herself in an impossible situation. Before she can marry Rex, she must divorce the husband she has kept secret for nearly ten years.
Rupert Cole has built a life for himself as half of the extremely successful King Cole Construction company out of Everland, Wyoming. But he has never forgotten the wife that he disappointed and drove away. When Bonnie appears in Everland, he thinks his deepest wishes for a second chance have come true. Instead, he finds himself embroiled in the battle of his life…the battle to win Bonnie back. But can love truly conquer all, or will Rupert and Bonnie both be forced to sacrifice their chance at happiness to save Bonnie’s girls?
