    Excerpt

Billy’s voice boomed into the microphone as she mounted the three steps to the stage, and everyone quieted down. “Miss Cody Ryan is the first female entrant in the history of the Annual Loon Fishing Tournament.”

The women of Loon erupted again, and Billy added, “Doc Taylor and I checked the rules closely, and nowhere does it say a female cannot compete.”

Male angler voices rumbled now, and Cody could feel a warm flush sliding from her neck to her cheeks.

What had she been thinking when she started all this?

And what had made Gage frown at her so?

Did he still intend to fish the tournament?

Was his name still in the cowboy hat?

Why should she even care? The jerk had spent the afternoon with Lila. Cody should want him to forego the tournament—out of sight and out of mind—but her heart didn’t work that way. Refusing to meet his gaze once she reached the stage, she stared at a spot well to the right of the tent flap, careful to keep Billy and Lila in her peripheral vision.

“So we wish Cody the best of luck,” Billy was saying, though his expression didn’t agree. He turned to his daughter who was ogling Gage at the back of the tent. “Lila, pick Cody’s partner out of the hat.”

Still  Lila stared at Gage, who stared at Cody, who desperately wished he would look anywhere but at her at the moment.

“Lila,” Billy snapped.

She startled and finally noticed her father’s glare, which made her pass a glare on to Cody as she reached into the big black Stetson. Her hand scrabbled in the bottom of the hat for a few seconds, and she frowned when Billy kept jiggling the Stetson.

“Hold still,” Lila muttered under her breath and snatched out one of the folded papers. She cast another of her toothy smiles out to the crowd. Until her eyes focused on the piece of paper in her hand, that is. The smile winked out, and her gaze shot to her father. “No,” she whined through clenched teeth.

“Read it,” he grunted.

Their matching glares dueled for an eternity, and Lila finally leaned over the microphone and said flatly, “Gage Connor.”

Cody’s jaw dropped. She shouldn’t’ve been so shocked. There were few names left. She had feared she would end up Zeke’s partner, since his name hadn’t been called either. Gage stalked down the center aisle, his long strides making short work of the distance, and Lila tracked his advance, looking dumbfounded.

Billy appropriated the microphone and hip-checked Lila aside. “Cody Ryan and Gage Connor will go out in the last flight, second to last boat, place number forty-nine. That leaves the last two names.” He picked the papers out of the Stetson himself, though Cody at her close range would have said it looked more like he peeled them off the hat interior.

“Zeke Tumson and Alvin Harper,” Billy announced and frowned as Zeke and Alvin followed Gage up the steps. “Lila, the shirts.”

Only Lila’s eyes moved, and they followed Gage’s progress as he strolled over to stand next to Cody. When Lila’s gaze shifted to Cody, the orbs darkened to glittering obsidian pools,

THE ANGEL AND THE SEAL

Don't miss the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of this post!

The Angel and the SEAL
The Mystery Angel Romances Book 3
by
Petie McCarty

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Romantic Suspense

The Angel and the SEAL . . . a cozy mystery with romantic suspense from
the Mystery Angel Romances series. An angel hidden in every book
waiting for you to figure out who . . .

Navy SEAL Sean MacKay's teammate is murdered after stealing a deadly
nerve-gas formula from Syrian terrorists. Naval Intelligence believes
MacKay's teammate was a traitor and shipped the stolen formula to his
sister in the states for safekeeping. MacKay is given orders to find
the sister before the terrorists do and to retrieve the stolen
formula at all costs.

Foreclosure looms for Cory Rigatero as she fights to keep her rustic resort near
Mt. St. Helens afloat after her brother deserted her to join the SEAL
Teams. Cory's whole world dives into a tailspin when Sean MacKay
shows up at her resort with the news of her brother's death and the
wild suspicion her brother may have sent her traitorous classified
documents. No way will Cory trust MacKay—the man who once seduced
her and then vanished into the night without a trace.

Mac had almost made it back to his cabin when he heard Garth’s frantic bark again. The sound hadn’t come from the lake, and Garth wasn’t out hunting night critters as he had earlier suspected. This bark echoed from the area near the barn.

“Garth!” Mac hollered into the night.

Two harsh barks burst in rapid succession from the dog. A long, piercing howl swiftly followed.
Worried the dog might be in trouble, Mac sprinted for the barn, surprised to find all the doors shut. He heaved one of the large double doors open, and Garth bounded out, almost knocking him over.

Mac stepped into the darkness of the barn and called out, “Vern? You in here?”

Nothing.

He squatted down to Garth’s level and suffered a couple face licks. “How did you get shut up in the barn?” He ruffled the dog’s ears and noted the big canine appeared slightly unsteady on his feet. “You okay, boy?”

Garth wagged his tail, and Mac led him out into the moonlight for a better look. A scream ripped through the night air and stopped them both.

Cory!

Mac hauled ass for the main house with Garth huffing hard alongside, already winded and laboring to stay on Mac’s heels. Something had happened to the big dog, but he couldn’t worry about that now.
The two tore through the border of the side garden. Mac spied the kitchen door to the main house standing wide open and raced that direction.

A second scream sliced through the air. This one sounded closer to the front of the house, and Mac changed course to race in that direction. Garth stayed straight and bounded through the open kitchen door as Mac cleared the front corner on the house.

He stumbled when he caught sight of a man in dark clothes and a black hoodie half-carrying, half-dragging Cory down the front steps with a knife to her throat. Mac skidded silently into the rhododendron bushes lining the porch. The assailant hissed over his shoulder to someone behind him.

Okay. Two tangos.

A wolf-like howl echoed through the house, clearly audible through the open front door. A heavy thud, a scream of pain, and vicious snarling erupted in rapid succession.

Mac had backup. Garth had made it inside.

Tango One still clutched Cory. Hearing the scuffle inside, he twisted around to see in the front door, and his knife edged away from her throat. That was all the distraction Mac required. Streaking from his cover, he grabbed Tango One’s knife arm and slammed it down hard on top of his thigh. The weapon flipped to the grass at their feet.

Cory screamed, “Mac!” then elbowed Tango One hard in the gut and broke free.

“Run, Cory! Go get Vern!” he hollered and ducked as Tango One straightened and swung a fist at Mac’s head.

Mac backed up a step as Tango One swung again, then leaped on the assailant’s back as the man lunged for his dropped knife. The sounds of struggle inside the house continued, a man’s pain-filled wails punctuated by Garth’s wolf-like snarls.

Mac choked Tango One as his fingers grazed the knife handle, then yanked him backward and threw him down. Mac hammered his right fist into Tango’s jaw and buried his left fist in the man’s gut in the ancient one-two punch. The guy was strong—almost as strong as Mac—but when Mac grabbed the target’s hair and smashed the outside of his elbow into the guy’s temple, the assailant sagged to his knees. Mac snatched off the black hood, and Tango’s head snapped up to glare at him.

Farouq Nawar.

Mac would know that ugly mug anywhere. He had been ordered to study surveillance photos of the bastard often enough. A yelp sounded inside the house, followed by a loud gunshot and a scream of rage from close by. Mac did the unforgiveable and took his eyes off his target. Cory hadn’t run as he had ordered, and she bolted up the steps and into the house.

“Cory, no!” he roared.

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Kellen Brand's inheritance turns out to be a whopper—one dilapidated farm
in West Virginia and one guardian angel!

Since Kellen is convinced no sane woman would choose to live in Riverside,
she vows to sell her farm and quick. Her handsome neighbor Luke
Kenyon must block the farm sale or risk exposure of his family's

clandestine hazardous-waste-dumping operation next to her farm, and
she prays Luke has one more rescue up his sleeve. It's her only hope
of staying alive.

Unless her mother really did leave her a guardian angel . .

Silver Dagger Tour No Cowboys, No Angels Excerpt:

The frigid water closed in over Kellen, and she lashed out with both arms to force her head above the surface for a desperate breath. Her hiking boots would sign her death warrant. They already felt like concrete blocks. She had only minutes, maybe seconds, to keep herself afloat. She thrashed again, and this time her face barely cleared the water’s surface. She was ready and screamed with all her might.

Icy water filled her eyes, and her arms stroked hard to keep her mouth above the water long enough to grab a precious lungful of air. She scissored her legs to help her dwindling buoyancy, but the physical act was so difficult with the boots on, her muscles screamed with the effort.

How many more times can I get a breath? Two, maybe three?

Her arm muscles strained in revolt as she scissored her legs again. She plummeted farther after each thrust, and her best effort barely pushed her mouth and nose above the surface. She didn’t scream again. There was no one around to hear, and she couldn’t spare the strength. Less than a minute had passed since she’d hit the freezing water.

Downward she stroked her arms hard, but the heavy flannel shirt dragged against the motion. She opened her eyes to see the surface, and at the peak of her thrust, her lips were still underwater. She tried to scissor her legs, but she had nothing left. She feared she would sink and flailed both arms upward. Death hovered at her shoulder, near as the blackest of shadows beneath the dock, tangible enough that she could reach out and touch the darkness. Another stroke downward, and she jerked her head back, ready to grab a breath. She could see a blurred shadow moving overhead. Hope buoyed her efforts to escape from the frigid arms of the river drawing her down, and she forced her way to the surface.

A huge hand plunged into the icy water and grabbed her right arm. Kellen felt her body straining toward the surface. The second her mouth was exposed to the air, she gasped for a breath. A cough wracked her frame and threatened the tenuous hold of the mighty hand on her arm. She sunk back down, her eyes filled with water, and her vision blurred. She knew she weighed a ton—with the soaked clothing and boots—and panicked thinking the hand couldn’t hold on. Yet she was dragged higher until another hand grabbed the back of her shirt, and her body careened up and sideways onto the deck. The mighty hands released her, and she clutched at the wooden planks to be sure she was far enough from the precipice to the icy water. She heaved two successive gasps, and a hard sob wracked her frame.

Two strong arms tugged her upright. She blinked rapidly to clear her blurred vision and saw Luke’s face, his dark eyes wide. Nothing had ever looked so good to her in all her life. With another hard sob, she threw herself into his arms and broke into tears. The brush with death shattered all her resolve and kindled emotions buried in the deepest recesses of her heart.

He yanked her roughly to him and clutched her tight to his chest, mumbling soothing words into her ear. His warmth seeped into her, and she clung to him like her lifeline, digging her fingers into his back, unwilling to let go and unable to stop crying.

“I almost d-drowned,” she stuttered, her face buried against his warm and now soaked chest.

“Good Lord, I know,” he rumbled and crushed her even tighter against him.

“If you had been a minute later,” she wheezed and tried to look up at him.

“Don’t even think that!”

She flinched and leaned back. His gaze looked hard and unyielding.

“Just be glad I got here in time,” he whispered harshly, and his eyes went black as onyx. He cupped her cheeks, lowered his mouth, and gently brushed his lips against hers.

The sizzle of heat shot straight to her heart and warmed her from the inside out. All she could manage was a nod. His kiss twisted all her wild emotions into a spinning vortex, allowing her only to react without thought, and she leaned in to kiss him again.

PAR FOR CINDERELLA

Par for Cinderella
The Cinderella Romances Book 3
by
Petie McCarty

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Billionaire Aidan Cross longs to escape his life of celebrity and become a
regular guy, if only for a brief time. His chance comes when his
yacht breaks down near quaint Cypress Key, Florida—the site of his
planned five-star golf resort. The golf resort no one in town wants.

Casey Stuart has given up her dream of escaping to the big city. She
refuses to desert her uncle, even when he hires the new stranger in
town to replace her at their golf course. Casey vows to steer clear
of the stranger called Aidan and the danger their inescapable
chemistry provokes. Aidan’s stay is temporary, and falling for him
promises only heartbreak.

When Casey discovers Cypress Key’s mayor is making underhanded business
deals, she ends up on the wrong side of the powerful autocrat. Aidan
steps in to rescue her, but secrets from his past threaten to bogey
their newfound relationship.

PAR FOR CINDERELLA Excerpt:

The tour boat docked at the actual Cypress Key—safely and comfortably with no rocking or bumping, thanks to him—for a self-guided walking tour of the remnants of the original seventeenth-century settlement. According to Casey, original foundations could be seen as well as the settlement’s graveyard. The small island key had supported a small but thriving population until typhoid fever decimated the entire group of residents.

Aidan would have liked to see the island, but Casey informed him he had to stay on board should any guests return for a soft drink or a snack. She then pulled out a satchel from under the bow and did tour company paperwork until their guests returned. And ignored him completely.

He disliked the ignoring even more than the bossing, so he flirted with the two appreciative vacationers on the return trip just for spite. And as payback, Casey had him stand at the exit gangway at the end of the tour and hold the tips jar, feeling mortified when guests stuffed ones or a rare five-dollar bill in it and patted his arm or his hand. One fiftyish woman patted his butt, and he swore he heard Casey snort from her seat at the front of the boat.

To even things out, he allowed the two flirters to kiss his cheek on their way down the gangway, and he smirked at Casey after each girl tucked a ten in the jar.

He busied himself putting the boat back the way they’d found it that morning: checking the gas gauge, returning the drinks and snacks to their respective waterproof compartments in the boat. Aidan emptied the cooler’s ice over the side and returned the container to the large storage compartment at the stern. All without any comment from Casey.

At last finished with his menial tasks, Aidan waited for her at the gangway, so she could lock the gate in the boat railing for departure. When she reached his side, he handed her the stupid tip jar, gritting his teeth again at the memory of the retirement-aged fellow who’d said, “You like doing this for a living?”

Aidan made a mental note to double all his tips in the future wherever they may be.

Casey pushed the jar back at him. “No, these are yours. You earned them, tour captain.”

Which would have been nice if she hadn’t smirked.
Smirked! Talk about adding insult to injury.

He hated when she smirked at him. No, that wasn’t true. She made him want to kiss every smirk right off her beautiful face. Just because he could.

“Put it on my bail tab,” he snapped and stepped onto the gangway.

“Suit yourself,” she said cheerfully, then pocketed the cash from the jar and locked the gate. Ten steps down the dock, she stopped. “I forgot my satchel. Would you get it for me?”

He checked for a smirk—didn’t see one—and trudged back to the boat, then vaulted over the rail.

When he returned the satchel to her, their hands brushed and her gaze shot to his face.

There had been a definite spark at their touch. He damn sure felt the sizzle. He stared into her eyes, wide green-emerald pools of innocence now. No devilment, not a smirk in sight.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her gaze still riveted to his.

Like being tugged with unseen hands, he eased toward the emerald eyes holding the lure or promise of something he suddenly needed. Desperately. Unlike the wild, needy connection on the runabout, this kiss started as a light brush of lips. He tested the waters. Tasted the promise of pleasure before settling more firmly to tease her lips apart with the tip of his tongue. Her eyes aroused him; her scent aroused him; and God knew her sweet taste aroused him.

He shouldn’t kiss her again. He knew it. That way lay disaster.

His control slipped.

And then he was slipping.

As Casey shoved him back.

Into the marina.
