HOW IT ALL BEGAN...

 By Caroline Clemmons

Ever since my family had a German couple as landlords when I was a little girl in Bakersfield, California, I have been fascinated by the German language—and the country. Our landlords spoke German when nosy little girls were near. I suspect they hoped it would discourage me, but it only caused me to eavesdrop whenever I could. That wasn’t often. Of course, my mother would not have permitted it if she had known.

My fascination didn’t wane after my family moved back to Texas, but I couldn't do much to feed my obsession except read the encyclopedias. I took German 101 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The professor was an  exchange professor from Germany. His stories of his homeland increased my desire to visit there. Finally, after many years, my husband began traveling to Germany occasionally. I was able to tag along several times.

In the meantime, both our daughters had taken German classes. On one trip they accompanied us. Our oldest had her heart set on a genuine cuckoo clock. In my favorite city of Munich, she had practiced how to ask for one in a shop. The first place we tried didn’t have them, but the clerk gave us directions in German to a clock shop not far away. I could tell she spoke English and was humoring our daughter. With only our smattering of German, we were elated when we understood the directions and found the right shop. Sadly, now we couldn’t do it—use it or lose it! We lost it.

When I thought of starting a fresh historical western romance mail order bride series, I wanted the first brides to be German. The area I love most is Bavaria. So, Adelheid “Heidi” Roth became the first mail order bride for the new sweet series, the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides. Her groom is Gentry McRae. (You may notice that is not the name of the groom to whom she commits herself in the excerpt below.)

Heidi

Heidi is a beautiful blond of 25 and is 5’ 10” tall. Without consciously intending it, Heidi’s family takes advantage of her. Well, maybe her sister intends to do so. Although Heidi has a quick temper, she usually keeps it in check rather than create strife in her family. Her spoiled younger sister, Willhamina, makes no attempt to hide her feeling of superiority because she is married and Heidi is not.

Heidi's Bavarian Hometown

Several times recently, the local matchmaker has invited Heidi to visit her regarding Johann Meyer, a former resident who is now living in America. His mother also calls on Heidi. However, Heidi wants to find a husband on her own. One day, insults go too far and Heidi’s control snaps. She throws her pride and her apron aside and goes to the matchmaker.

Here the excerpt of the result:

Although she hated to leave her parents, she was tired of her family members criticizing her. If she needed to support herself, she could cook and sew and clean and do accounts. Her heart pounded so loud she thought Mrs. Heinz must hear it.

Heidi took a deep breath. “I believe Johann and I can make a good marriage.”

The matchmaker leaned back and clasped her hands to her chest. “Wonderful, my dear! You are a beautiful woman and a good daughter. I know how hard you work to help your mother, and even find time to help Mr. Schneider with his bookkeeping.”

“Thank you,” was all Heidi could say.

“I am so pleased you will have your own home—and it sounds like a very nice one. I have your funds and your travel arrangements. Mrs. Meyer was so sure you would accept that she has given me your tickets and the cash you’ll need for incidentals.”

Heidi cleared her throat to remove the lump that had lodged there. “You mean… you mean I am supposed to leave immediately?”

Mrs. Heinz held up a hand in a motion to halt. “You must get to your ship by the end of the month. To do so, you must leave in fourteen days. Please write Johann a letter today while you are here. I will mail it immediately so he will have it before you arrive.” She handed Heidi several sheets of paper and set the inkwell and pen near her.

Gentry, groom by default

Heidi travels for weeks to reach Harrigan Springs, Texas. When she arrives, huge surprises await her. If you haven’t read GENTRY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, I hope you’ll do so and then follow the series. You don't need to read the books in order, but you'll enjoy them more if you do. Each book is available in e-book and print. They are all enrolled in Kindle Unlimited. Here’s the Amazon link for GENTRY.

MEG, NEW RELEASE!

I’m excited to share with you that MEG, book 20 in the Angel Creek Christmas Brides Series, released today! I hope you’re one of the many who had it preordered so that you already have the book on your e-reader.  It’s also available in print and is free in Kindle Unlimited.

I admit I'm pleased at how this book turned out. Beta reader reports have been very favorable. I hope you will read and enjoy Meg and Curtis' story.

Having children as secondary characters is something I enjoy. How an adult reacts to a child tells a lot about the person. You’ll see what I mean in MEG when Curtis McClain has to adjust to two surprise orphans Meg brings with her to Angel Creek in Montana Territory.

Curtis grew up in a cold-mannered family and doesn’t know how to show affection. Meg has to teach him what being a family means. She’s just the feisty female for the job.

When Meg Todd learns her bullying brother-in-law has horrifying plans for her future, she asks an attorney family friend for help escaping. Meg wants her own husband and home and is willing to move over halfway across the country to achieve her goal. Along the way she agrees to take two children for their dying mother. Is she too impulsive? Will Curtis and the children become the happy family of Meg’s dreams?

Curtis McClain has to be careful with his small savings or it won’t fund his dream of his own newspaper. He wants a wife—and he needs someone to help him with the newspaper. If he can combine the two, then he’ll be all right. In a few years, they can start a family. But, will a woman want to move to the middle of nowhere on those terms? Will she grow to care for him in spite of his reserved nature?

He is slightly annoyed when his wife shows up with two orphaned children. When he learns the amount of her inheritance, he decides she won’t be content to stay with him. What does she need with an almost penniless newspaper owner when she has two children and the money to live wherever she chooses? The boy and girl are well-behaved but he still isn’t certain he could accept them as his own. That is, until a terrifying event occurs that forces him to make a decision and take quick action.

When he stepped forward, he was wearing a frown. “I’m expecting Meg McClain.”

He was tall with dark brown hair and startling bright blue eyes. Not Greek god handsome, he was ruggedly attractive. His posture gave her the impression he was ill at ease.

“Hello, Curtis. I’m Meg and these are now our children. Penny is four and Tom is six. How they came to be ours is a long story. Perhaps it can wait until we’re somewhere warm.”

Poor little Tom’s face clouded with worry. “I sure hope you’re not gonna be mad at us or our new Mama, sir.”

“New Mama?” Curtis’ eyebrows raised.

Before she could add anything, Tom added, “We’ll be real good and I’ll do all kinds of chores and help you. I reckon I look small but I’m strong.” He raised his little arm as if he expected Curtis to test it.

Curtis’ gaze turned to Tom and his frown softened. “You’re a hard worker, are you? I can probably find things that need your help.”

“You won’t be sorry, sir.”

Meg cuddled Penny’s head on her shoulder while she repeated her request. “I wonder if we can get inside? I’m sure we’ll be able to tolerate the weather, but we’re not yet used to the cold.”

He handed Tom the valise and then picked up the two suitcases that belonged to the children. “I’ll arrange to get the trunks later. Looks as if there are several.”

Carrying Penny, she followed, glancing at Tom to make sure he could keep pace. “I brought as much as I could. I didn’t know how much in the way of household supplies a bachelor would have. Plus, many are family things I wanted to save.”

“The answer to the first is not much. I only brought a few personal items and the rest was newspaper equipment. It’s heavy and cost a lot to ship.”

“I imagine getting it here safely was complicated as well. Is it far to your house?”

He actually chuckled. “Across town, or what there is of Angel Creek. I recently bought the house from folks who were moving to the southwest.”

The following recipe is included in my newsletter which went out this morning. In the book, Meg gets the recipe for an Apple cake to publish in the newspaper. Although the following recipe uses cooking oil instead of lard or butter, this is the type cake served.

FRESH APPLE CAKE

2 cups sugar

1 1/2 cups cooking oil

2 eggs

3 cups flour

1 teaspoon soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

3 cups peeled, cored, and chopped raw apples

1 cup crushed pineapple, drained

1 cup pecans, chopped

Cream sugar and oil. Add eggs and then dry ingredients. Mix and add fruits and nuts. Mix again. Cooked in greased and floured pan. Makes 2 large loaves or 1 Bundt cake or 4 small loaves. Bake at 350° F for 1 hour and 15 minutes for Bundt cake. Adjust baking time for loaf pans. Cool in pan. Serve warm or cold.

 VARIATIONS

Add 1/2 cup chopped maraschino cherries to batter for color (and flavor) for a holiday cake.

This cake is also very good served warm with hot spiced apple cider for an afternoon tea or winter evening treat.

Small loaves make great token gifts for friends (especially if accompanied by cookies and perhaps a few pieces of candy).

My mom used caramel icing on her Bundt apple cake. She made wonderful caramel. I didn’t get that DNA because I have trouble not scorching the sugar.

Please remember that CHRISTMAS COMES TO DICKENS is only available for a short time now. My novella in the contemporary anthology is HOLIDAY HEARTS. I love this anthology and hope you will too. Only 99 cents for ten original stories set in a perfect town. The universal buy link is at https://books2read.com/DickensChristmas

Also still on sale are the Yours Truly: The Lovelorn historical romances. Mine is DESPERATE IN DELAWARE. They’re 99 cents each through the end of December. It’s at https://mybook.to/Mina

Do you have social-distancing (new 2020 phrase) plans to celebrate the season? Our youngest daughter took me to look at Christmas lights yesterday evening. So many gorgeous displays! One area of a nearby city has a contest and traffic-stopping yard displays. We try to go each year.

Don’t miss the aligning of planets on December 21 on the Winter Solstice. We plan to view them. I expect to get an idea of what drew the wise men to Bethlehem when Christ was born.

As the year draws to a close, I tend to take stock of my year as well as make plans for the upcoming months. I have books scheduled for 2021 and a couple already planned for 2022.

Whether you’re Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Moslem, or any other religion, I hope you receive peace in your heart. No matter how you’re coping now, my hope is the coming year brings you joy, peace, good health, and prosperity.

This has been a stressful year, but also one filled with blessings. I’m grateful for many things—my faith, my family, my pets (who are part of the family), and for you!

CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX

 By Bonnie Edwards

Bonnie Edwards, Author

How did CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX come about?

I’d completed my trilogy called Love at Christmas, set in Canada. Three stories of love between Canadian heroines and their American heroes. The first book in that series is NOT-SO-BLUE CHRISTMAS. But, alas, during the writing of these fun, warm stories, a perfectly good ex-husband, who loved his daughters, was left behind without a love of his own.

And anyone who writes or reads romance knows we can’t have that, can we?

Meanwhile, for another series (Return to Welcome) I’d created a small town called Welcome, WA where I’d written three full length novels starting with FINDING MERCY.

I tapped my chin wondering what to do, what to do…and decided Max Whyte had no choice but to move there!

CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX combines characters from both series and a brand new heroine with spunk and twin three-year-old boys. Laughs, love, and second chances abound in Christmas to the Max.

We see characters from both series and even have a mean character get her comeuppance. I couldn’t resist!

Rest assured, no one has to read any of the other books to enjoy CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX…it is definitely a standalone.

A stand-alone Return to Welcome Novel: CHRISTMAS TO THE MAX brings two charming and romantic series together! Max Whyte (LOVE AT CHRISTMAS) moves to Welcome, WA. (Return to Welcome)

Max Whyte moves to Welcome WA to live closer to his daughters after their mother remarries. He wants to fix up an old home, settle into his new position at an IT firm, and try not to think about turning forty alone.

Burned by a single mother in the past, he vows not to get tangled with another woman with children. When he saves the life of a small boy, he finds himself tangled in more ways than he could imagine.

When the boy’s mother turns out to be the perfect person to do his renovations, Max has trouble keeping his personal feelings out of their employer/employee relationship.

Kaylin Simpson has returned to Welcome to give her boys the kind of home she wanted as a child. She needs a fresh, stable start and wants to run her own business. Her three-year-old twins keep her hopping, but after she finishes the renovations for Max, she hopes to have her life well in hand.

Max is drawn to Kaylin and her adorable twin boys. Her wit and feisty spirit pull at his heartstrings until he realizes being a stepfather is never what he wanted.

Christmas in Welcome can be a time to heal and move forward and Max and Kaylin must set aside their old hurts to allow love to blossom.

Kaylin Simpson loved her twins. She truly, really, did. But some days she could scream until her throat collapsed and they wouldn’t hear a thing. She’d thought two two-year-olds were hard. Having three-year-olds was a brand-new level of hell. They talked back, got stubborn, and were more curious. And taller, stronger, capable of climbing onto chairs and getting into cupboards.

And they were faster.

It was being faster that would kill her one day. Or them. Whatever. Someone would be dead.

Right now, Brody was telling a little girl to go down the slide when she clearly didn’t want to. The poor child looked scared and Brody yelling in her ear wasn’t helping.

“Brody, please let the little girl take a breath so she’s not so scared. And DON’T PUSH!” But he did, and Kaylin dashed for the end of the slide to catch the wailing child.

Too late, she realized she’d taken her other eye off Taylor. She scooped up the girl before she landed on the ground, and then spun her head to scan for her other boy.

There. By the swings. “Taylor! Stop right THERE!” But he didn’t.

No, not her Taylor. He turned his head, glanced at her with a devilish grin and dashed for the road. Chase. He wanted to play chase.

In traffic.

Kaylin set the girl on her feet and ran after Taylor who’d already stepped onto the road. A car took the curve on Cross Street too quickly and Kaylin screamed her boy’s name. Screamed it again. And again…

A man, tall, dark-haired, and with broad shoulders got there just before Taylor ran headlong into the car’s path. Kaylin’s heart stalled and her eyes stung.

Gasping for breath, she nearly collided with the big man who cradled her son in his arms, his large palm covering Taylor’s head in a protective move. Taylor didn’t seem to understand what had happened until he looked up into the stranger’s face.

And screamed blue murder an inch from the man’s nose.

Tires screeched as the driver slammed on the brakes. A woman opened the passenger side window. “Oh, my Lord! Did I hit him?” Her eyes were terror-filled, and her voice trembled.

The man shook his head and seemed to hold tighter to Taylor as he bent toward the opened car window. “No,” he said. “But you took that curve pretty fast.” He didn’t yell it, the way Kaylin wanted to, but he got his point across.

The woman looked shaken and chastened. She eased the car to the curb and rested her head on the steering wheel. She’d been as badly shaken as Kaylin and the stranger.

A sudden screech from behind her had Kaylin spinning to see where it had come from. “Brody! Don’t you dare!”

She snatched Taylor from the stranger’s arms and lumbered under his weight back toward the swings where Brody was attempting to climb onto the big kids’ swing. He’d been complaining for weeks about the baby swings and she wasn’t sure how much longer he’d agree to use them.

She was still shaking over the miss with the car and wanted, more than anything, to get these boys out of this park and home where she could contain them.

If only she had the energy. She let Taylor slide to the ground and clasped his hand firmly as she walked the rest of the way toward the swing set. “We’re going home,” she announced in her most commanding tone, “as soon as I thank that man for saving Taylor’s life.”

Brody, for once, looked contrite. “I saw, Momma. He’s over dere.” And her boy pointed to a picnic bench that faced the river.

The man sat atop the table alone. His silhouette against the light showed broad shoulders that tapered to a trim waist. She already knew he could move like lightning when he needed to. His hair was trim on the sides but had some length on top. Odd that he’d be alone in a park on a lovely morning. Most people were jogging along the riverside trail or in the playpark like she’d been.

As she walked toward him, he pulled out his phone and started thumbing the screen as he scanned it. She hadn’t seen him here before, and she recognized a lot of the regular park users.

She used to know a lot of people in Welcome when she was a kid. And he wasn’t one of them, either.

Correction. Her aunt and uncle had known a lot of people here. She’d only been a summer visitor, so she’d been limited to knowing some of the neighborhood children. Still, Welcome was where her most carefree memories rested. Even though her aunt and uncle had retired to Arizona, it was Welcome that had called to her when she’d needed to make a change in her life.

Returning to Welcome last month hadn’t been as easy as she’d expected. Her business hadn’t taken off the way she’d hoped, and daycare was more expensive than she’d planned for. She certainly could not take her kids to work. Construction sites were not safe for curious children.

Some of the people she remembered in Welcome gossiped and held grudges, but for the most part, people here were okay. Like this man who’d jumped into action for a total stranger. Gratitude made her heart lighter than it had been in weeks.

She had her boys safe and sound. That was what mattered.

“Hello,” she said as she pulled alongside the picnic bench. Both boys for once, were silent, as the man raised his gaze to assess her.

“Yes?” He made a face as if she’d interrupted something important.

“I wanted to thank you for what you did. I’m still shaking and I’m sure I never would’ve got there in time.” She’d been two steps away, but still, they were the longest two strides ever.

His gaze raked the twins and his eyebrows rose. “You’ve got your hands full, but next time keep a closer watch on them. I won’t always be around for back-up.”

Typical non-parent, always certain children could be corralled or held back or kept safe every second of every day and that they listened. Hah!

Kaylin backed up a step. “Sure, I’ll keep a tighter grip. Maybe tether them to a stake in the ground. Keep them in the basement in cages, maybe. You’ve given me a lot to think about in regard to keeping my children safe.” She raised her right eyebrow and glared at the know-it-all. “Thanks for that, too.”

Curl up in front of the fire, with this fun, festive read.

Daisy Jones has hit rock bottom. Or so she believes.

A cheating boyfriend, trouble at work, having to move back in with her mother, and being forced to compare her brother's loved-up, newly-wed status and brand-new shiny house with her own dire lack of prospects, isn't what she imagined her life was going to be like at thirty. To top it all off, Christmas, is just around the corner!

Daisy, bless her, thinks things can't possibly get any worse, but when her ancient great-grandmother persuades her to plant a silver sixpence in the Christmas pud for luck, Daisy is about to discover that they most definitely can.

COMEDY/VACATION/ADVENTURE -- VACATION TO GRACELAND

Vacation to Graceland
by Phillip Cornell

GENRE:  Vacation/Comedy/Adventure

Phillip Cornell will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter during the tour.

VACATION TO GRACELAND Blurb:

A man, his mother, his sister, his granny, his niece, and his nephew make a trip to Memphis Tennessee for a family reunion. During the course of the trip, the family encounter a series of circumstances that mold the trip into an unforgettable experience. Through the arguing and internal bickering within the group, they come together and strengthen the blood bond they share with each other. Reflecting on each and every situation encountered, the man realizes the trip is an overall social, emotional, and educational journey.

VACATION TO GRACELAND Excerpt:

The idea of a family trip started, when my mom devised a plan to take my granny on a weekend trip. This was difficult because my granny was on a weekly dialysis schedule, so my mom had to come up with a way to keep her schedule and transport her from one city to the next without any problems. My grandma had been on dialysis for the past 2 ½ years, and with her increasing age and decreasing health, she needed more attention from care givers and family members.

The living arrangement in my mom’s house was setup like this. My mom, my sister Brandi, and my granny all lived there constantly. My other sister Crissy and her children did not live there, but they would visit often. I myself would visit quite often also. My job was 2 miles from my mom’s house, so it was nothing for me to visit on my lunch break or when I got off work. My granny anticipated me coming over many times. She would cook a meal for me, and place my name on the plate. It was not the perfect living arrangement, but it definitely had a strong family feel tied into it.

My granny kept close tabs on what my mom and sister were always doing, because that is just who she was. She still liked to get out the house ever once in a while. Her favorite pastime was people watching. If there was one thing that she enjoyed, it was talking about other people. This is a trait that has been handed down from generation to generation, and I myself am guilty of doing it also. Discussing people in a humorous light, that downgrades their physical appearance or personality, is second nature to me now. I can easily do it without any effort or stress. The thoughts just come to my head, and I let the mild form of slander flow. I have never been embarrassed of this, and like me, my granny has never been either.

COWBOY IN CHARGE IS NEW FROM BARBARA WHITE DAILLE!

Caroline, thank you for inviting me to visit again!

Readers, I’m sharing a peek into my brand-new release, COWBOY IN CHARGE. To beat the summer heat, I’ve chosen a clip intended to help you think cool thoughts. ;)

COWBOY IN CHARGE Excerpt

A banana split wouldn’t have been his first choice of dessert in January, but it never dropped off his personal menu. He wondered how much of Layne’s agreement was driven by the boy’s eagerness to have ice cream and how much of it came from her need to sit down.
They were the only ones in the place, which allowed her to argue with him about who would pay for their order.
“You bought my groceries,” she said in a low voice when Shay had moved away to assemble his banana split. “Getting dessert is the least I can do.”
“You never pay when I’m with you at the Big Dipper,” he said flatly.
Her face froze. She blinked once, then walked away to plop herself down at a nearby table.
They had left the carriage parked outside the shop. She set the baby carrier on the far edge of the table near the wall and took off the blanket. Scott settled down in a chair beside them with his ice cream cone.
The minute Jason joined them, Layne leaned forward and said quietly, “That wasn’t necessary.”
“Really? With the way Shay stood behind the counter giving me the evil eye?”
She shot a quick look toward the cash register, but he knew the other woman had disappeared through the doorway behind it into the back room.
“She didn’t give you the evil eye.”
“Close enough to it, and I wasn’t about to stand down.”
He dug into his banana split and held up a mouthful of vanilla ice cream. “You sure you don’t want any? I can always get another spoon.”
“No, thanks.”
“Too tame for you, huh? You always went for the fancy ones, the chocolate-marshmallow swirl or the pistachio-walnut-mint.”
“I’m surprised you remembered.” She didn’t meet his eyes.
“Are you kidding? Those were premium flavors. I had to pay extra for `em.”
That got her looking at him. “Don’t even try to make me feel guilty about that. Your banana splits and triple-dip sundaes cost three times as much as my cones.”
He laughed and spooned up a mound of chocolate ice cream covered with whipped cream. “We spent plenty of time here in our dating days, didn’t we?”
“It was everybody’s favorite hangout.”
“I’ll agree with that. And I won’t point out how you sidestepped the question.”

From the cover of COWBOY IN CHARGE:
