SINS OF THE FATHER -- A FAMILY-CENTERED DRAMA

Sins of the Father
by Lisa Beth Darling

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Family centered drama
Readers, don’t you love Lisa Beth Darling’s name. Lisa Beth will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter during the tour.
Lisa Beth Darling has shared an interview.
Where did you grow up? Siblings? Locale? Were you considered a “bookworm” or a jock? Married, single? Children?
I was born in Norwalk, CT but grew up in New London, CT—a typical small New England city in the southeastern corner of the state—and I live in my ancestral home. I was adopted in 1967 and grew up an only child only to discover much later in life that I had three brothers; one full and two half. I have met and have a good relationship with one of my half-brothers. In school, I was the quiet artsy girl in class who loved to write. Although, like most quiet types, if you rile us up you'll be sorry, and if you take the time to get to know us you'll find we have a wicked sense of humor. I've been married for the last 30 years to my wonderful husband, Roy, and together we've raised two daughters, Nicole and Rebecca, to adulthood. They are now out of the nest and living on their own. No, I don't suffer from 'Empty Nest Syndrome', my husband and I are quite enjoying this stage of our lives.
Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?
My all-time favorite author is Stephen King, I love horror…good horror, that is and it's very hard to find. I started reading his books when I was 10 and instantly fell in love. I am still a big fan of VC Andrews, Harold Robin, Jacqueline Susan, and Irwin Shaw.
What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?
I'm a big movie buff and have a large collection of films on DVD and Blu-Ray, in the winter I just adore long movie marathons by the fire on our new reclining couches. They're wonderful! I'm so glad we bought them.  In the nice weather, I garden in containers on my deck. I used to do in-ground gardening but we became over-run with critters and it was very difficult to keep them out of the garden, they got far more vegetables than we did.  Doing it this way keeps the animals at bay as most of them aren't brave enough to venture up onto the deck. For decades, we went for long rides on my husband's motorcycle but, unfortunately, he had a bad accident last year and the bike is no more. Fortunately, he's fine though the road to recovery was a bit long.
Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?
"Get busy living or get busy dying"—Red, Rita Hayworth, and Shawshank Redemption, Stephen King
How long have you been writing?
I've been writing since 4th grade which is roughly 42 years.
Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude?
My favorite place to write is in my home office where everything I need/want is right at my fingertips. I'm surrounded by all of my favorite books, a few letters from Stephen King, family photographs, and a plethora of "Americana" in the forms of KISS dolls, Star Trek dolls, an original Star Trek phaser, Twinkie the Kid (given to me by my brother), and a wide assortment of other such items. I burn incense and candles when I write. Solitude is a must, that's why I had my husband install French doors on my office where there was once just a huge open archway. I close my door, draw the curtains so no one can see me, and get to it. I always write on a PC, laptops are nice for something but I find them very difficult to write on, the keyboard is far too small. I use special ergonomic keyboards at home and at work.
Are you a plotter or a panzer?
I never plot anything out anymore, I found it got in the way more than anything. I always have an idea of where a story is going but not exactly of how The Muse and I will get there. That's the fun part. I'm as often surprised by how something unravels just as much as my readers are.
Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?
Yes, I think that writers draw on all types of things to keep a story evolving and moving forward after The Muse has drafted them into writing it. We're great observers of human behavior, in fact, I think we observe others quietly from the shadows almost as much as we write. We pay attention to the news and what's going on in the world around us. Then we squash it all together to make putty that fills in some of the gaps of a given character's personality or motivation or to set the backdrop of a story.
Very well put. I always say we are the sum of all of our experiences. Do you set daily writing goals? Word count? Number of chapters? Do you get a chance to write every day?
Absolutely not, I found that was the quickest way to become discouraged. This isn't a sprint it's a marathon and there's no prize for getting to The End first.  I write every day from 2:15pm to about 4:30pm, which is when my husband comes home from work. Once he arrives home, it's Us Time and all writing is put away for the night. On the weekends, anything goes and you can often find me at my desk still in my PJs at 4 in the afternoon.
What do you hope your writing brings to readers?
A good story and not much more than that, I hope they come away feeling satisfied and as though they got their money's worth. I hope it brings them some joy or provides a distraction for them.
What long-term plans do you have for your career?
Just to keep going and keep doing what I do. I'm not interested in making a heap of money from my writing, I just hope to keep doing it until the day I die.
What advice would you give to unpublished authors?
I wish I had some magickal advice on that one, but in the end, I guess I'd say; just don't give up and don't quit your day job. Chances are you will not make a million dollars 'overnight' with your book so if that's your goal you may be in the wrong business. If what you want is to tell a good story and have your voice be heard then keep plugging along, eventually you'll find your audience.
Share a fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you.
I get up around 2am to eat a bowl of cereal and can't sleep without a fan going.
Share something about you that would surprise or shock readers.
I've done everything I've ever written about in my more adult oriented novels…all of it. After all, writers write what they know.
Is your book a series?
Sins of the Father is book #2 in the Sister Christian series of family dramas. When completed later this year the series will contain 4 novels. Genesis is the first book in the series and Mysterious Ways is the third.
How about an excerpt?
The last box was a bit of rummage sale it had several old framed family photographs and many nick-knacks wrapped in tissue paper from small finely cut crystal vases to colorful bowls and cups of blue and iridescent Carnival Glass. Hannah unwrapped as though it were Christmas Morning and told him of how their mother liked to collect glassware. Often they went to antique shops on Sundays to see what they could find, just the two of them, they would get hamburgers and ice cream at David's Roadside on the way home.
Lovingly and excitedly, she told him the story behind each and every piece as she gazed upon it with gleaming eyes, turned it over in her hands several times, and finally placed it gingerly atop of the piano. Including the story of the rather magnificent black porcelain horse tucked in with the other treasures.  Her mother gave it to her the day they got Hannah's new pony, Ares.
Hannah reminded Mason of the day when the two of them took Ares and her mother's horse, Daisy, from the stables and rode through the woods for the day.  Mason had forgotten all about it but as she spoke bits and pieces of the day came back to him.  He couldn't recall why they were alone, why he wasn't hanging with some of the guys and how they'd gotten together that day. But, being a Summer Kid, one made alliances and took friendships where one could get them. Mason was no different.
As he remembered, it had been a very good day.  Full of sunshine and wide blue skies. Looking back now it was so obvious that Hannah knew he was her brother, the way she looked at him, smiled for him, talked to him.  Once or twice even Mason wondered if little Hannah Rice had a crush on him but that wasn't quite it. The adoration shining so brightly in her eyes wasn't the glow of a crush but richer kind, the kind that a little sister held for her big brother.  Again, he wished he'd known, wished someone had told him.
"Where's the Ren-oir?"
Mason was startled out of his daze, "The what?"
"The pain-t-ing. The Ren-oir?"
"Are you pulling my leg?"
Hannah frowned and shook her head even though it hurt, "No."
Mason sprang off the desk and yanked the printed inventory from it. Three pages in there it was; Box #98 Renoir Original. "Well, let's get that."
Hannah smiled, she loved the painting but, like the hutch, it was very large and she was uncertain whether or not Rick had a big enough bit of wall space for it.
Tossing the inventory on the table he sat next to her, "Here, I'll read, and you pick three more boxes."
Is there anything else you’d like readers to know about you?
My life is quite literally an open book, anything you want to know about me, just ask me. Other than that you're welcome to walk into my particular brand of insanity by visiting my blog http://lbdarling.wordpress.com  Warning: I don't hold back in my blog.
SINS OF THE FATHER Blurb:
As Hannah recovers from emergency brain and heart surgery, memories of the past overtake her dreams with such clarity they cannot be denied. As the last of the painful family secrets come to light it's up to her brother, Doctor Richard Mason, and his unconventional methods to help her confront the ugliness.
SINS OF THE FATHER Excerpt:
Running a hand over the side of his close-cropped gray head Frank tried to keep his cool as he pled his case, "Look, I just want to see Hannah, are you going to let me in there or not?"
Mason seemed to think about it for a second even though he really wasn't. "Ummm…not." He said finally. "She doesn't want to see you."
"She told you that? I don't believe it."
"Well, you could go and ask herself…oh, wait, that's right…you can't go in there. Guess you'll just have to take my word for it."
"Yeah, like that's worth anything."
"Some people think it is." Mason retorted as he held out his cupped hands, "Some people put their lives right here.  Crazy, right?"  From the look on the man's face Mason thought he'd stand there and bitch all day long. "While you're waiting for noon to come around, why don't you do Hannah a favor?"
"What's that?"
"Tell me about the two years between her accident and the birth of my pre-maturely deceased nephew."  He watched Frank's mouth drop open. "Take a load off." Mason said and gestured toward the chair opposite his desk. "In fact, why don't you just tell me everything you know?"
"She told you about Little Ricky?" Frank asked as he leaned forward but the question was more directed to the air than anyone in the room. "She's never spoken about him…ever."
Lisa Beth Darling, Author
It was in the 4th grade when Lisa Beth Darling discovered she was a naturally gifted writer. For her very first creative writing assignment, the teacher asked the class to pen a story about a baby bird's first flight and read them to the class. Putting pencil to paper, Lisa was instantly whisked away by a force she couldn't explain. When they were finished, all of the children read their happy stories to the class. Not Lisa. She got up and told of how the baby bird flew too high, hit a plane, crashed to the ground and died. She told of how the mama bird and daddy bird cried of how even God was upset sending the rains pouring from the sky. The class was speechless when she finished all they could do was stare at her. The teacher kept her after class told her the story was very good but it was different from the others. She asked Lisa if she'd ever heard of Icarus and had she based her story on him. Lisa had yet to encounter Greek Mythology or hear a whisper of Icarus. As Lisa left the classroom the teacher again told her how good the story was but suggested she might want to write something happier next time. Perplexed, Lisa turned and asked her teacher: "Why?" The teacher had no answer. Luckily for us, Lisa never took that teacher's advice.
Today she brings us complex multi-layered stories rich with the trials and tribulations that make up the world in which we live. Not one to be pigeonholed into any single genre, Lisa's stories revolve around the intricacies of couples from range the intimacy of lovers, to mothers and sons, and brothers and sisters.
Lisa Beth Darling lives in her hometown of New London, CT with her husband of nearly 30 years, Roy.  She is the author of more than fifteen novels along with several short stories and non-fiction books.
LOVES OF OUR LIVES
Loves of our Lives
by A.C. Chenier
The author will be awarding a $15 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter during the tour.
GENRE: Romance
LOVES OF OUR LIVES Blurb:
For Katie Benjamin, finding the perfect soul mate was just a fairy tale until a chance encounter on a train changes everything. What she discovers takes her on a journey that spans lifetimes.
LOVES OF OUR LIVES Excerpt:
“I had this commissioned for you to have. I want you to wear it close to your heart and know my heart is now and will always be yours.” He opened the case and displayed a gold locket. She gasped at the beautiful locket within the case. It was a white cameo in a pale pink background.
“Turn it over,” he said.
She did and read the words he had engraved on the back. Forever in my heart, forever in my soul.
She felt tears running down her face as she looked at the beautiful words and then into Jonathon’s eyes. She looked deep into his eyes and felt her own soul connecting directly to Jonathon. He said to her, “Forever in my heart, forever in my soul. I will find you again.” He then wrapped his arms around her and took her lips in a passionate kiss. Her heart was hammering in her throat as she kissed him back. To her it felt a bit like a good-bye kiss, but a kiss filled with the promise of reuniting in time.
A. C. Chenier, Author
I am a CPA, CGA and live in Southern Ontario. After working for many years in the high pressure worlds of banking and IT, I decided that it was time to have a change in pace. Leaving Toronto behind I embarked on a new career in retail sales. The change was wonderful, but I felt something was missing.
Then, the unthinkable happened, and I was widowed at 46. That was a truly life altering experience. In time, I was introduced to the books and work of Dr. Brian Weiss. I discovered in his research a new purpose in life, and was driven to start writing, something I had always enjoyed, but never thought of as a career choice.
And now here we are in 2015, and my first novel is ready to be published. My second, also in the Past Lives series, will follow shortly.  I continue to write and dream of a future that I had never even considered in my wildest dreams.
SEASIDE CHRISTMAS BY STACY CLAFLIN
seaside Christmas (1)
Seaside Christmas by Stacy Claflin
SEASIDE CHRISTMAS Blurb:
He can’t stand her. She thinks he’s crazy. Will their feelings stay etched in permanent ink?
Cruz Hunter has always stuck out in his small hometown. Now that he’s covered in tattoos, the residents peg him as even more of an outcast. It seems like the whole world is against his dream of opening a local tattoo parlor.
When he finally finds the perfect place for his new business, Cruz discovers a pastor and his daughter have already bought it. The only thing more irritating than the change in his plan is Talia, a beautiful and feisty argument in a dress. Cruz would like nothing more than to have her out of his life and his mind, but for some reason, she’s the only thing he can think about.
If Cruz and Talia can stop arguing long enough, opposites may do much more than attract.
SEASIDE CHRISTMAS Excerpt:
The snow glistened in the sun and crunched under Cruz Hunter’s boots as he walked toward the building that would soon be his.
“It’s perfect, yo.” He turned to Jake, his younger brother. “Wait until you see it up close.”
This road had yet to be treated, so they had to park and walk a block.
Jake tightened his scarf. “Almost looks like a church.”
“It was—a long time ago. Then it was a restaurant before being abandoned.”
“It’s going to take some work.” Jake squinted.
“Not too much, dude.” Nothing was going to crush Cruz’s enthusiasm today. The old, brown building with peeling paint and weather-worn wood paneling was going to be his—just as soon as he signed the papers. “Mostly just the outside. It’s gonna be perfect for my tattoo parlor.”
“Well, you know I’ll help as much as I can.” Jake didn’t sound convinced.
“Don’t judge it ‘til you see the inside.” Cruz pulled up a leather sleeve and scratched his newest tattoo, the feet of a dragon which was part of a much larger work going up most of his arm.
“I won’t,” Jake promised.
Cruz’s pulse raced with each step as they neared the building. There wasn’t a person alive who could convince him it wasn’t the most beautiful building in existence. He’d wanted to open his tat shop for as long as he could remember, and with Kittle Falls being such a small town, it had taken a lot of work to convince the town council to even consider giving him permission to open a shop. They finally conceded when he found a property at the edge of town where no tourist would ever accidentally stumble upon it.
“It looks pretty cool,” Jake said. “How are we going to see inside?”
“Windows, man. Ever heard of ‘em?” Cruz laughed and gave his brother a playful shove.
“You mean those fancy glass things some buildings have?” Jake joked.
They finally reached the property line. Cruz took a deep breath, taking in the sight. “Isn’t she beautiful?”
“Um…”
Cruz stared at the solid structure. “You see hard work and a building as aged as old man Kittle himself—”
“Who’s long been dead,” Jake added.
“But I see opportunity. A dream fulfilled.” Cruz stared at the building a moment longer.
“You ready to see her up close?”
“That’s why I’m here.”
Cruz took a step forward, but froze when the front door opened.
“Ghosts?” Jake asked.
Cruz held his breath, not sure of the answer. “Maybe it’s our lucky day,” Cruz said. “If the door’s unlocked, I can give you the grand tour.”
A slim, middle-aged man wearing black slacks and matching shiny shoes stepped out onto the porch. He appeared to be speaking to someone inside. A beautiful blonde about Cruz’s age, wearing a blue dress under a long, thick winter coat stepped out.
Jake turned to Cruz and arched an eyebrow. Cruz shook his head.
“What’s going on?” Jake whispered.
“I got nothin’.” Cruz took a deep breath of the chilled early-December air.
“Building inspectors?” Jake asked.
“Maybe.” Cruz frowned, watching the duo. They acted like they owned the place.
Finally, the guy closed the door and locked it, stuffing the key into his jacket pocket.
Cruz exchanged a worried glance with his brother as irritation set in. Something wasn’t right. He stepped forward, meeting the two of them at the bottom step.
“Greetings,” said the man. He smiled warmly at Cruz.
Cruz didn’t respond.
“Are you a neighbor?” asked the girl.
“You could say that,” Cruz said. “Who are you?”
The man smiled and held out his hand. “My name’s Pastor Allen Tisdale, and this is my daughter, Talia.”
She smiled sweetly and extended her hand, also.
Cruz flicked his head in acknowledgment, but ignored their extended hands. “What are you doing here?”
Jake stepped forward, taking Allen’s hand. “Excuse my brother. I’m Jake Hunter, and he’s Cruz. You must be new to Kittle Falls. Welcome.”
"Thank you," Allen said. "Talia and I have bought this building. I understand it was a restaurant for a decade or so, but we’re going to restore it to a church."
Cruz stared at him, unable to find words. That was probably a good thing, considering the words he would have chosen.
I don’t stick to a single genre in my writing, reading, or viewing. My favorite shows include Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Pretty Little Liars, Lost Girl, Vampire Diaries, and Once Upon a Time.
I've been writing and telling stories for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my story telling would get me into trouble because I would try to convince others that my stories were real.
When I'm not busy writing, I like spending time with my family and friends. I also educate my kids from home.
DOUBLE OPPORTUNITIES TODAY - TWILIGHT'S ENCORE AND SVATURA SERIES COVER REVEAL
Jacquie will award a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter.
PLEASE NOTE: This book will be on sale for $0.99 only until 2 PM Pacific Time (5 PM Eastern Time). It will then be on sale for $1.99 until 8 AM Pacific Time on August 8.
TWILIGHT'S ENCORE
by Jacquie Biggar
TWILIGHT’S ENCORE Blurb:
One man's betrayal will seal another's fate.
Ty Garrett fell in love with Katy Fowler from the moment they'd met. When her father’s betrayal yanks the young couple apart, Ty becomes bitter.
After a decade away, Katy returns to Tidal Falls with plans to get married in her family's theatre. But she hadn't expected to run into Ty Garrett, the boy she'd never forgotten.
When unseen forces endanger their lives, can Ty save Katy and win back her love, or is it too late for these two star-crossed lovers?
TWILIGHT’S ENCORE Excerpt:
“Ty, I didn’t expect to see you here. That’s twice today. I’d almost think you had it planned.” Her steps faltered when she realized just where he was standing—in front of the condom section. She flapped a hand in front of her face, a futile attempt to calm her racing pulse and pink cheeks.
He eyed her embarrassment for an amused moment before leaning over and deliberately picking up a box of extra large—in his dreams—glow in the dark—really?—contraceptives. “Funny, that’s what I was going to say.” He dropped the box into the half-full basket he carried in one hand. “After all, sugar, I was here first.”
Her gaze helplessly followed the carton of Trojans. They landed on top of three cans of kitten food, various colorful toys, and some litter. Katy reached into the basket and plucked out a toy mouse. “Unless you’re into some kinky activities, Garrett, your cover is blown.” She pointed toward the shelves behind him filled with pet supplies.
He shrugged. “You’re the one who leapt to conclusions.”
She didn’t think he was talking about the condoms.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I thought I’d share with you the beginning of my love affair with writing.
Normally, procrastination is my enemy. I like to get done whatever it is, as soon as I can, so that I don’t have to worry about it any more.
In school I worked hard to stay in the top ten every year. So when I came down sick with the measles and missed two weeks of grade nine, I was devastated. How was I ever going to catch up? I had less than a week to write a compelling story for Language Arts or get a failing mark.
Angry and frustrated, I sat in our living room, pen and paper in hand, staring at a bright yellow bouquet of cheerful looking daffodils. I wanted to hurl them across the room. It wasn’t fair. Why was I being punished for getting sick?
But then an idea popped into my head. A silly, farcical story. If the teacher wanted an essay, fine, I’d give him one. And so, Count Daffodil, was born. After the first paragraph the words flowed quicker, I could see the scene in my head and needed to get it down on paper. (Sound familiar?) I spent the rest of the day writing, and by the end of the night I had my story.
The next day I turned it in and immediately felt ill all over again. It was dumb. The teacher was going to hate it. I’d be a laughing stock. Funny how easy you can build something up to catastrophic proportions when you lack self-confidence.
We had to wait two weeks for the results. I was on tenterhooks the entire time. Sure that my mom would blow a gasket because I’d goofed instead of giving it my best shot.
Then came the big day.
I was scared to look. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore and turned to the last page. These were my teacher’s words:
I’m glad I didn’t read this at night. It’s been a while since I was so enthralled with a story. Very professionally done. The suspense, the ending, the style was excellent. I think I’ll read it to the other classes. Very impressive.
Not only did he read it to the other grade nines, he read it over the intercom to the entire school! Because of Mr. Thomas and a hapless bouquet of sunny daffodils, a writer was born.
Jacquie's first book,TIDAL FALLS, a romantic suspense novel about second chances, released September of 2014.
The only hope of finally defeating Maddox is for Adelaide and her sisters to combine their growing powers against him. But the key to a Svatura’s power is the heart, and Adelaide is still missing hers.
JUSTUS ROUX #INTERVIEW #NewRelease #GuiltyTour @Justus_Roux
Readers, today please welcome Justus Roux to the blog. She agreed to an interview before I relate her new release, a romantic suspense titled GUILTY PLEASURE.
Caroline: Tell readers something about where you grew up and about yourself.
Justus: I grew up in Detroit, Michigan then moved down to Adrian area. Presently I’m making plans to move to Phoenix AZ, hopefully later on this year. Now that my kids are all grown up I really would like a change of scenery. I have a brother and a sister. I’m been married to my husband for 29 years. We have three children. My oldest son lives in Kansas. My youngest son is going to college and lives with us. And my daughter goes to school in Honolulu, Hawaii.
I was pretty much a bookworm in school, but I was into music as well. I have never been considered a jock. Sports have never been my thing.
Caroline: Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?
Justus: I love romance books. I read from a wide variety of authors, so it’s hard to pick favorites.
Caroline: What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?
Justus: I love listening to music; it always relaxing me. I read. I watch my favorite T.V. shows. Play the occasional video game. My husband and I go to auctions.  As far as hobbies go I love to create odd artwork and I’m big on the steampunk thing (I gave this hobby to one my characters).
Caroline: Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?
Justus: “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
Caroline: I love that quote! How long have you been writing?
Justus: This side of forever, just kidding. I’ve been writing for at least twenty years.
Caroline: Sometimes it does seem like forever, doesn’t it? Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?
Justus: I have my own office to write in. This is my space. I can write through pretty much anything, though I do prefer quiet.  I work on a PC, my poor wrists would take a beating if I worked on a laptop.
Caroline: I agree and love being in my little office. Are you a plotter or a panzer?
Justus: When I write a novel I’m a plotter, but for a short story I’m a panzer.
Caroline: Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?
Justus: I use elements of real events or people for inspiration. I think all writers do this to one degree or another. What you experience can’t help but to influence what you write.
Caroline: So true. Do you set daily writing goals? Word count? Number of chapters? Do you get a chance to write every day?
Justus: I write six days a week. I always have at least one day where I spend the entire day with my husband and family.  I write about 10 pages a day, more if story is really flowing. The most I have written in a single day was 30 pages.
Caroline: Sounds like a dedicated professional. What do you hope your writing brings to readers?
Justus: Enjoyment and escape.
Caroline: What long-term plans do you have for your career?
Justus: I love what I do and I will keep writing until I can’t anymore. My long term plan is to just keep writing and see where it leads. I would like to try my hand at several different genres.
My dream is get published by one of the big publishing houses and become number one on the New York bestseller list, but isn’t this the dream of every writer.
Caroline: I agree that I love what I do and will until I can’t write anymore. I’ve been with a NY house and prefer self-published, but I would love to make NYTimes list. Would you like to tell us what you’re working on now?
Justus: I’m currently working on “Say Love” which is the 31st book in my Master Series.
Caroline: You do write a wide range. What advice would you give to unpublished authors?
Justus: Don’t ever give up. Rejection will happen. Bad reviews will happen. Just keep writing and perfecting your craft. If writing is what you truly enjoy, don’t ever give up.
Caroline: Good advice. Share a fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you.
Justus: I love steampunk artwork, jewelry, etc. I am trying my hand at creating some steampunk artwork.
Caroline: That sounds like fun. Share something about you that would surprise or shock readers.
Justus: I’m an open book. I pretty much put all out there.
Caroline: I know you write several series. Is GUILTY PLEASURE part of a series?
Justus: GUILTY PLEASURE is a single title book.
Caroline: Can you give readers a blurb about GUILTY PLEASURE?
Justus: Nicole frees herself of an abusive relationship and makes a fresh start in Chicago. Her new roommate Monica makes her feel at home right away, and Nicole is excited about starting her career as a paralegal. She meets the handsome defense lawyer Michael Lyons, whom she will be working with. Their attraction is immediate and intense, and she finds herself falling in love with her new boss.
Just as it seems Nicole’s life is finally going right, a series of brutal murders plague the Chicago area. As the number of these murders escalates all the evidence begins to point to Nicole’s new friend Adam Matthews or her lover Michael Lyons. She refuses to believe that either could possibly be capable of committing these brutal murders. Yet, by closing her eyes to this possibility, Nicole could be making a deadly mistake.
Caroline: Intriguing. How about an excerpt from GUILTY PLEASURE?
Justus: Nicole felt like her stomach was in knots.  She shouldn’t be this nervous, hell she knew what she was doing. She graduated the top of her class. Yet, her underlying insecurity always crept in.
She went up to the receptionist’s desk. She tried to picture what Mr. Lyons must look like. She pictured a middle-aged man, with maybe a bit of a beer belly, balding, but had a look of confidence about him.
“Hello, I’m Nicole Fisher, I’m Mr. Lyons’ new paralegal.”
“Hello Nicole, I’m Emily, Mr. Lyons is expecting you. Please follow me.” Emily led Nicole down the hall. “This will be your office.” She gestured to the room off to the side.  She headed to the room down the hall. She knocked once then entered.
“Mr. Lyons, Nicole Fisher, your new paralegal is here.”
“Thank you, Emily.”
Nicole was almost speechless when the chair turned around and the most gorgeous man she had ever seen was sitting there. He was nothing like she pictured. He had to be in his mid-thirties, his dark eyes were mesmerizing. His dark hair emphasized those dark eyes. When he stood, she noticed he certainly filled out a suit well.
“Is it Mrs. or Ms. Fisher?”
“Ms. Fisher, but you can call me Nicole.”
He smiled warmly at her. Almost taking her breath away.
“Well then, you can call me, Michael. I was very impressed by your academic record. And you certainly impressed our human resource gal. So welcome aboard. I will give you your first case to begin researching for me. It’s a pretty easy case. The murder weapon was found in his possession, etc. What I want to try to do is lessen this asshole’s sentence.”
“Excuse me…”
“Not everyone who comes through these doors is innocent, but they have paid good money for me to take the sting out of their punishment. I would prefer that all of them were innocent, but being a defense lawyer you can’t always be doing the righteous thing. I hope this isn’t a problem for you, Nicole.”
“Of course not, Sir. Everyone is entitled to a fair trial.”
“Exactly. I wanted to start you off with something a little easy at first. Let you get your feet wet. Here let me show you to your office.”
She followed Michael to her office. Damn, this man smelt wonderful. She quickly pulled herself together when they entered her office. She had to be professional and not act like some love sick teenager.
She had to admit that her office was pretty nice. It, of course, was nowhere as nice as his, nor did she expect it to be.
“I had Emily put the case file on your desk. We have an extensive legal file database in the computer. If you need help with any of that Emily will be happy to show you. I have to leave for an important meeting, but I will be happy to see what you come up with tomorrow. Like I said, this case is pretty cut and dry. It was nice meeting you, Nicole. I hope we work well together.”
“I’m sure we will, Sir.”
