TO WEAVE A HIGHLAND TAPESTRY

To Weave a Highland Tapestry
A Tale from the Order of the Dragon Knights
by
Mary Morgan
Genre: Time Travel/Scottish Medieval/Paranormal Romance

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press, Inc
Publication Date: December 9, 2019

Patrick MacFhearguis, hardened by battles won and lost, desires what he can never have—peace within his heart and soul. Yet, the ever-meddling Fae weave a new journey for him to conquer—a task this Highlander is determined to resist.

When skilled weaver, Gwen Hywel, is commissioned to create a tapestry for the MacFhearguis clan she embraces the assignment. While seeking out ideas, she finds herself clutching the one thread that can alter the tapestry of her heart and life.

A man conflicted by past deeds. A woman with no family of her own. Is it possible for love to unravel an ancient past in order to claim two badly scarred hearts? Or will the light of hope be doused forever?

“Are ye not overly fond of the bread?”
Gwen blinked and returned her attention to the man. “Excuse me?”
Patrick pointed to the spot in front of her on the table.
Glancing down, she was horrified to find she’d shredded the bread into tiny bits. “The bread is good. I have too much on my mind.” She scooped up the remnants of the bread and tossed them on the trencher.
He leaned his forearms onto the table. “We can have our conversation now, if ye wish.”
Gwen stood. “No. We made a bargain for after your fever lessens. To bed, MacFhearguis.”
A mischievous look came into his eyes as he stood. “I like how ye order me to my bed, lass.”
Chuckling softly, she folded her arms over her chest. I’m not going to continue with this flirtatious bantering. “I’m waiting.”
He approached her. “For what, pray tell.”
“I’m not playing this game.” She tried to hide the mirth from her features. Instead, she grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the bed.
“I do love a good game,” he declared in a husky voice.
Releasing her hold, she pointed once again to the bed. When Patrick lowered his head toward her face, Gwen shoved against his chest, causing him to tumble back onto the furs. “Rest.”
“Ye could have injured my arm,” he protested.
She fisted her hands on her hips. “A brawn warrior like yourself? Nah. If you can endure the harsh outdoors, climbing the stairs, and attempts at stealing kisses from me, then a tumble on the furs would not do you any harm.”
Patrick’s expression went from humor to compelling and magnetic. He swept a glance down over her body as if he had removed her clothing. Gwen’s breathing hitched, and heat blossomed in places she’d never thought to experience again.
His hand stroked the furs in invitation. “One kiss for healing?”
Her mind screamed to leave and deny Patrick his wish. Her body hastily overrode the demand.
With slow steps, Gwen approached the bed. Leaning forward, she cupped his face. “I shall give the warrior one kiss.”
When the first brush of his mouth touched hers, a prickling of pleasure caressed her entire body. She only meant to give him a chaste peck on the lips, but the man placed his hand on the back of her head and deepened the kiss. As his tongue sought entry into her mouth, Gwen let out a groan and dropped her hands onto his massive thighs. She opened herself to the heady sensation. The kiss promised divine ecstasy, and Gwen surrendered to the mastery of his lips.
Never before had she been kissed so seductively. Her body burned from his touch, and she hungered for more.
As he slowly broke free, she tried to bring her breathing back to normal. She stumbled back, brushing a trembling hand over her lips.

AN UNEXPECTED GIFT

Don't for forget the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of the post!

An Unexpected Gift
by
Krista Grayce
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Women's Fiction
Publication Date: November 25, 2019

Janie Nolan’s future had never been more uncertain, she was just learning to live with the loss of her mother from cancer, she suddenly finds herself jobless after an unexpected diagnosis with autism at the age of fifty-five. The thought of moving back to her childhood home in the idyllic town of Cape May, New Jersey to assess her future is a daunting proposal. It is in that sleepy shore town that she must reconnect with her abusive father. Now ailing, he has handed over control of the family business, a failing small theater, as a possible means for a fresh start. However, Janie is uncertain as to what his true motives might be.

Alec Ryan, a handsome, former intern of her father’s and now a successful Broadway producer and director arrives from New York carrying his own tumultuous past with plans to assist Janie in restoring the theater to its former glory. Along the way, Alec discovers qualities in Janie that prove she is more than just her diagnosis and resolves to help restore Janie as well, simultaneously putting his own demons to rest and learning to love again.

But when the small town gossip mill begins to buzz about Alec and a piece of jewelry left by her mother is revealed, Janie learns of a secret that may take things in another direction could change the course of her life forever.

Seagulls were calling her outside the windows. Their cries welcomed Janie home. She felt she could not rest in that house without hearing their voices high in the morning breeze outside. They were brazen and never shut up. She could relate to that; they were her kind of bird. Their sharp squawks soothed her as they always did. The Cape May beach, light from the lighthouse, and those crazy birds, was all she needed to remain calm and content.

"The way I see it, Alec, forgiveness is letting go of all negative emotions and memories; it’s moving on with whatever goodness remains. For years I had punished myself, feeling that if I forgave more, then he would love me and accept me, and I would have more friends, but the truth was, it was never in the cards or in God’s plan. Forgiveness was the life lesson that the Lord wanted me to learn."

Janie felt her heart start to speed up. Adrenaline flooded her system as if on an IV. She thought her heart was going to explode. Her eyes widened trying to focus despite the neon and fluorescent lights. Janie wanted to either run for the hills or crawl under a table. Instead, she stayed close to Alec who was unaware of her current predicament. She wanted desperately to suppress the hammering in her chest, but any attempt would be futile. Janie was overwhelmed and her skin felt clammy and cold. The noise in the pub seemed to be getting louder and louder, leading to humming and buzzing in her ears and drowning out her own thoughts. She placed her hands over her ears and closed her eyes tightly. She began to hyperventilate and moved her hands to her throat to relieve the tightness that was developing there. It was then that Alec took notice.

"Janie, are you okay?"

"NO, NO… I have to go, I have to go, I am so sorry!" Janie turned and ran out the door.

What Alec saw when he really looked at Janie, was that despite shutting off her emotions for self-protection, she was still working on saving, helping, and loving others... in a way that was enhanced by her apparent lack of emotions. Whether it was called autism, or Asperger’s, if people couldn't see her immeasurable love for others then they were truly blind.

The Cape May shore was a graceful sweep of sand, glittering under the spring sun. This was where the placid ocean came to rest. The waves rolled in with a soothing sound. The beachgoers walked along the crest of the dry and wet sand, picking up the seashells that lay every few feet or so. These shells were treasures of an aquatic world just out of reach. The footprints they left behind were soon erased. The sun was high at noon and getting warmer. The aroma of sea air mixed with the smell of fudge coming from the stores on the promenade was as fragrant as it always was and brought back some very comforting memories.

Krista Grayce, Author
HI! Just to tell you a bit about myself, I have lived in Seattle, WA most of my life. However, I was raised in New York and spent summers in Cape May, NJ. Most of my work is set on the beaches and beach towns of the Jersey Shore. I wrote my first novel when I was thirteen years old and continued to write poetry and short stories for the following years. I have had articles and papers published as well as photographs that were published in a book entitled "Rock and Roll Memorabilia II".

I hold an AA degree in Business Management. I never obtained a degree in Literary Arts or Writing per se but I feel I come by my writing talent organically as William Shakespeare is my 1st cousin 12 times removed.

"An Unexpected Gift" is my debut novel. Like Janie, the main character in the novel, I was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism at the age of forty-eight. However, I am proud to share this diagnosis with Ralph Waldo Emerson and Emily Dickenson as well as many others. I see my autism as a gift from God. It has given me a high intellect and innate talent that I use as a tool to enlighten the rest of the world to the plight of adults with autism.

Like many people on the spectrum, I never married or had children which is sadly my greatest regret. I currently live with my wonderful sister Kendra and my three cats Tyler, Tabitha and Teddy in Spokane, WA. I am planning to move back to the New Jersey Shore as soon as possible.

SNEAK PEEK AT WYOMING SETTING FOR AN AGENT FOR LYDIA

Next week I’ll release a new book, AN AGENT FOR LYDIA, Pinkerton Matchmaker Series. This book has been both challenging and fun to write. Research was required.

You know I love writing my books. The characters speak to me and I have to write their stories to silence them. Sounds crazy, right? Maybe it is, but it works for me.

As for the research, readers won’t realize how much time I spent trying to get the details correct. I have maps and articles on the flora and fauna. I have Google photos of the places about which I’ve written. I made lists of the songs of that time and books available then.

Pass to the Hole-in-the-Wall, Wyoming
Want to ride a horse up that?d

One fact in the book may represent an hour of research. This is particularly true when I get side-tracked and keep reading after I find the item I need. What can I say—I love history of this period. The book is set in 1872.

To tell the truth, I’ve never been in Wyoming, which is where most of this book is set. I’d love to visit there. Thank goodness for the internet so I can “see” what the locale is like.

The locale in question is the Hole In The Wall in Wyoming. Although that is famous as a hideout for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, it was used decades before they were there. At the time of this book, Jesse James was supposedly there briefly. In 1872, there was only one cabin there. Later there were six.

Original cabin at Hole-In-The-Wall, Wyoming
An outlaw home doesn't look that luxurious

It’s a fascinating landscape. The hole-in-the-wall is a vee in a bluff that allows controlled access. To me the rocky trail looks impossible for a horse to climb without breaking a leg. Somehow, horses climbed it.

Valley

At the top, it opens into a large valley with a stream running through it. At the time of the robbers and rustlers living there, the grass was green and thick. Apparently it was perfect for rustled cattle.

In addition to the cabin (and later cabins, plural), there is a cave named Outlaw Cave. This is included in AN AGENT FOR LYDIA.

Outlaw Cave

I'd like to point out something. These outlaws are supposed to have stolen a lot of money. But, look how they lived. They'd have had a much better life with a normal job and home.

Now Hole-In-The-Wall is part of a national park. Have you been fortunate enough to visit this area?

By the way, do you like the new blog header?

OUR NEW DECADE

Happy New Year to each of you, wonderful friends. Thank you for stopping by and for buying and reading my books. I treasure your friendship more than you can know!

Here we are at the dawn of a new decade, shiny and bright and sparkling. Each day offers a fresh slate on which we can write our name boldly or smear it a bit. What are your plans for the upcoming year? Do you expect to ‘make your mark’ or ‘go with the flow’? Did you go out to celebrate welcoming in the new decade or stay at home for a quiet evening?

Like many who stayed home, I’m an introvert. This is all right since I spend most of my time alone in my office writing my books. When I have to go out ‘peopling’, being an introvert is hard. In addition, I have an ankle abnormality that makes walking difficult. Thank goodness for online shopping and Amazon Prime!

When I was a small child, I was not just an introvert—I was so shy I was pitiful. I spent the first two days of afternoon kindergarten standing at the room’s door, crying and clutching the little blanket I’d brought for rest time. After the teacher consulted with my mother, I was switched to the morning session. I knew a girl, Judy McClosky, in that class, so I was fine. I actually loved kindergarten after that. Knowing one person made that much difference!

I believe Facebook was created for us introverts. We can interact with dozens of people without leaving our homes. For instance, we could live at Yellowstone National Park and work from an isolated home as Peggy L. Henderson does. Or, we could live atop a mountain like Kirsten Osbourne. Technically, Kirsten is in town, but she is at the top of a long drive up and up. Imagine how isolated authors were before the internet. Supposedly Emily Dickinson rarely left her room. Yikes!

Now I have a tiny office I call my pink cave. I feel happy and comfortable here surrounded by some of my favorite mementos, books, and general stuff. Unfortunately, there is a lot of stuff because I’m sentimental and a saver of too many things.

Currently, I’m putting the finishing touches on AN AGENT FOR LYDIA, Pinkerton Matchmaker Series, which will release on January 10. These are fun to write and I’ve enjoyed those I’ve read.

My next project is A BRIDE FOR LUKE, Proxy Bride Series, which will release on February 19. I love the cover for this one. Virginia McKevitt designed both covers. The model reminds me of an actress I like but whose name I can’t remember. Christine Sterling conceived both series.

So, you see that my year is starting off at full speed. What’s in store for you?

Una Tiers (nom de plume) is an avid reader, attorney and independent author in the Chicago area. Her early reading enthusiasm exhausted her grammar school library and she was introduced to the magnificence of the downtown Chicago Public Library. Years later, she had the honor to take writing classes with Harry Mark Petrakis, downing a bowl of cheddar chowder after class.

Over the years, creative writing took a backseat to drafting legal documents. After one particularly brutal day in court, Una wrote a story murdering the problem judge (on paper). Feeling better, she returned to work. Adding additional victims proved to be a stress reliever making Una smile. The story grew into Judge vs Nuts.

Una has several novels and novellas. I encourage you to take a chance. You will be entertained and surreptitiously educated to the law as it is in probate.

When she is not murdering people (on paper) Una has a scratch and sniff garden, including chocolate mint, dill, lavender, rosemary and cilantro. In 2018, she planted a Hyacinth bean and is waiting for the promises on the packet.

The next full length novel, Judge vs. Michigan, takes you on a dinner cruise from Navy Pier. Can you swim?

TANGLED UP WITH A COWBOY!

Don't forget to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of the post!

Tangled Up With a Cowboy
Hearts of Wyoming Book 5
by
Anne Carrole
Genre: Contemporary Western Romance

Publisher: Galley Press
Publication Date: November 24, 2019

A healthy-living yoga instructor and a gutsy bull rider? When opposites attract, sparks fly, but will love ignite?

Cowboy Lonnie Kasin is close to making the rodeo finals in bull riding. If he’s lucky enough to make the cut, he’s bent on doing everything he can to prove he belongs there. That is, until he meets a spunky yoga instructor who thinks he’s two bricks short of a load for riding bulls. How can he convince her that a bull rider is the man for her while proving to the world he belongs on that Finals roster?

No one would mistake Livvy Dennis for the responsible one in her family. And only she thinks moving to Wyoming to open up her own yoga studio is a good idea. Of course, she never expected a daredevil bull rider from Cheyenne to pull the mat out from under her. There are risk takers and then there is just plain crazy. She’ll have to figure out which one she is before it’s too late to save her heart.

Bull riders might be crazy, but when chasing a slot for the Finals, they were also crazed—as in irrational, wired, scared. Not of the bull but of losing the slot that would bring them more money in ten days than they’d earned all year.

Lonnie Kasin knew that because those words described exactly how he felt as he sat on the metal railings overlooking the chutes, one of which would hold the beast he’d be riding in a few minutes.

He breathed in the familiar scent of warm hides and acrid manure, dusty horses and dustier hay as he scanned bleachers crammed with locals in cowboy hats and boots who had come out on a warm Saturday evening in August for a little fun and entertainment. No doubt some of those who ran this rodeo to benefit the local schools looked forward to this night all year. For those who competed, it was just one more stop in a long list of summer rodeos.

The purse wasn’t huge, a little over a thousand if he won, but it all added up. At least that was what he told himself as he bounced from town to town, crisscrossing the West in search of a win. And he had to keep winning. Even at smaller rodeos like this one. Even though tonight his mind kept drifting to something else…or rather someone else.

Metal slammed against metal as the first bull was loaded. Bull rider Paulo Santos had drawn him, and though Paulo was in the top three so far this year and a shoo-in to make the Finals, the bull wasn’t. In fact, the bull Lonnie would be riding was the best of this rodeo’s lot, giving him a good chance at first place—if he stayed on.

The gate opened. Paulo hung on as the timer counted down, and Lonnie’s pulse sped up. Paulo made the buzzer and waited for the score. An eighty-two. A good but, thankfully, beatable score.

This was what he loved, what he lived for. If he could just win enough this season to make it to the Finals, all his problems would be solved. Except one. And nothing and no one could solve that.

Not even the pretty little blonde he was bound to see tomorrow at his friend’s wedding. Since he’d found out that Trace Martin and Haylee Dennis would be tying the knot, thoughts of Livvy Dennis, Haylee’s sister, had been screwing up his concentration. He’d met her once, but with someone like Livvy, once was all it took, because no one, at least no red-blooded male, would ever forget her.

From her tourist-crazy turquoise boots and sexy short-shorts to her golden hair and mischievous blue eyes, she’d been zooming around his mind like a fly he couldn’t catch.

He wasn’t looking for much, just a little respite from the drumbeat of wins and losses that pounded his mind with buck-off percentages and bull stats. Anyone who knew him knew he wasn’t relationship material. Didn’t do well with commitment. Never stayed long in one place. Hell, he didn’t even have a place he called home, living out of a suitcase and mooching off of friends to keep the loneliness at bay.

“Your bull’s in the chute.” Chance Cochran’s sharp elbow struck Lonnie’s side. “You okay?”

“Course I’m okay.” He would be if he stopped thinking about what he couldn’t have and concentrated on what he could have—a shot at the Finals and maybe one night with a cute and sassy blonde.

Lonnie scrambled over the top of the railings to the pen containing his bull, leaving Chance to follow. Cochran had already competed in saddle bronc, placing third. Lonnie needed to place first because, unlike Chance, who was solidly in the top five in saddle bronc, Lonnie was sixteenth. Meaning he’d need to take first place as many times as he could to get on and stay on the fifteen-man Finals roster for the ten-day rodeo event in December.

“You’ve got little Shane’s picture loaded?” Lonnie asked as he settled on the railing above his bull.

Chance heaved a sigh from behind. “Stupid superstition.”

“Not stupid. Each time I’ve looked at your little son’s face, it has brought me luck. I’m not about to change things up now. Besides, I’m his godfather and proud of him.”

Chance held up his phone and angled the screen. “I feel like a goddamn fool doing this every time you get on a bull. Everyone probably thinks I’m one of those jackass fathers who can’t stop talking about his kid.”

Lonnie gazed at the cherub face of a boy almost a year old whose broad smile and bright-blue eyes anchored Lonnie in a way nothing else did. Chance’s son would likely be the closet he’d ever get to having a family. Gazing at little Shane’s picture in the moment before he got on the bull, he could at least pretend someone cared.

“You were one of those jackass fathers when you first showed me this picture at the start of the season, and that began my winning streak. May not win every time, but I also haven’t sustained a season-ending injury. So now you’ve got to keep doing it until the season is over, which is only another month or so. Besides, what are friends for if not to make you look stupid?”

Lonnie shifted his gaze to the bull with a murderous look in its eye.

“You can get rid of me after eight seconds,” he told the bull. “Just give me a good ride.”

He lowered himself onto the bull, and as he felt the brawn of the animal under his butt, adrenaline pumped into his veins in a rush worthy of an addict’s needle. The bull shifted. Lonnie tugged on his rope, wrapped it tighter around his hand, and nodded. The gate opened.

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SANTA CLAUS

Caroline Clemmons' Book Review of THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SANTA CLAUS, (by) as told to Jeff Guinn

Because I love this time of year, I thought I’d give you a review of the book THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SANTA CLAUS, as told to Jeff Guinn. This is not a new book, but came out in 2003. In fact, Jeff Guinn now has several follow-up books available. I read the first of the series several years ago. Don’t worry, this review does not contain spoilers.

St. Nicholas
I was relieved to learn the Santa Claus/Saint Nicholas tradition was not a marketing ploy concocted by Madison Avenue. There really was a Saint Nicholas in the sixth century, and he really did go about giving gifts. Okay, he didn’t crawl down the chimney. Homes didn’t have actual chimneys as we know them back then. Many just had a hole in the roof. Not too cozy in bad weather.

Saint Nicholas’ first known gifts were to the daughters of a very poor man. The girls couldn’t marry without a dowry, but their father had none to offer. Each girl had only one pair of stockings and washed that pair at bedtime and hung it by the fire to dry overnight. Taking pity on the girls, Saint Nicholas either (1) tossed bags of gold through the window or (2) put the coins in the stockings the girls left drying by the fire each night. Thus, the girls were able to marry (and, hopefully, each got a second pair of stockings).

Santa relaxes on December 25th

Saint Nicholas was an actual person who went around giving to the poor and helping all those he could. In other words, he did what we’re all supposed to do.  Remarkable that he did what he could in a time when the poor were looked down upon. Remarkable that doing what was right created so much notoriety and controversy and gave him a permanent place in history. Remarkable that we continue his legacy by giving to those we love and, hopefully, to those in need. Whether you call him Saint Nicholas, Santa Claus, or Father Christmas, thanks for continuing his legacy.

Can the enchanting veterinarian and the brooding attorney fight the demons from the past…and build a new future?

Read an Excerpt

“It’s not a bag of bones. It’s a block of old, historic buildings that need love and care,” she began. But standing there, taking in his polished rich-man strength, it was futile to convince him of anything. “You know what? Deal me the death blow now. I’d like to review the lease I signed before I throw in the towel and start looking for a new space and a new home, because I can tell there’s no way you and I will ever be on the same page.”

“New home?”

“What?” she said.

“You said, ‘a new space and a new home’?”

“I live in the apartment above the French Connection Bakery. Mr. and Mrs. Heely have owned it for twenty-five years.” There she was, exhausted-sharing again. And there he stood intense-staring. She closed her eyes at the craziest, weirdest conversation she’d ever had, and realized Chewie was asleep on her chest with his tiny head nuzzled in her neck. Oh, soft love, she thought, if only people were more like dogs, so trusting, kind, and loving.

“One month,” he said.

“One month to be out of—”

“I’ll give you one month to try to convince me.”

“I… What?”

“You spend time with me for the next month. We get to know each other, and you can state your case.”

“Spend time with you?” Is he insane?

“You said you wanted to try to convince me to change my mind.”

“Oh,” she whispered.

A mother’s tragic diagnosis.

A daughter’s life on hold.

An ending and a new beginning ...

Cassandra McDowall’s mother has been forgetful for a while, but she never anticipated rapid-onset Alzheimer’s to come out of nowhere and shake their world to its very core.

As Cassie puts her already-lackluster life on hold, her mom’s indomitable will and spirit of adventure prove to be a handful.

And as her mother fades, the two embark on one last adventure—a journey that reveals secrets on the brink of being lost, the joy of foreign sunsets, and love where she hadn’t thought it possible.

The door shut and I turned around to face Russ.

“The pizza is on the table.” He stopped. “What’s wrong?” He didn’t wait for an answer. Instead he came over and put his hands on my shoulder. “You can’t do this nonstop. It’s taking a toll. Maybe I could take you out—there’s a show you’d love...”

“Russ,” I said cutting him off. I would’ve liked nothing better, but that wasn’t going to happen. “I’d love to, but I can’t. I have to be here for Mom.”

He frowned.

“You’re not alone, Cassie. I’ll be there for you every step of the way if you’ll let me.”

“Russ, I can’t ...”

He hauled me against his chest and kissed me. His lips were soft and then hard, hot with passion. Feeling his strength, his heart beat against mine, my breasts rocking against his chest and it was all too much. I wanted him. And nowhere in my life was there room to have him.

When he let me go I just stood there—shell-shocked, my heart pounding in a good way.

“And not just as friends,” he finished. “I want you in my life, Cass.”

“You can’t think of me like that, Russ.” I shook my head. “Like what?”

“In a romantic situation. It’s never going to happen.” And as final as that statement was I knew by the look on Russ’s face and how I felt when I looked at him, that neither of us believed it.

About the Author

The winner of her city’s writing award, Ryshia Kennie’s novels have taken her characters from the depression era prairies in her first book From the Dust to a across the globe and back again. There’s never a lack of places to set a story as the too long prairie winters occasionally find her with travel journal in hand seeking adventure on foreign shores. While facing off a Monitor Lizard before breakfast or running through the Kasbah chased by an enraged Water Carrier aren’t normal travel experiences and might never find a place in one of her stories, they do make great travel stories. When not collecting odd memories from around the world, she’s writing mainly romantic suspense and women’s fiction.
