TO HEAL A HEART

To Heal a Heart
The Masonville Series Book 2
by
Jana Richards
Genre: Contemporary Western Romance

Two souls in pain, two hearts in need of rescue.

Garrett Saunders' world changed two years ago on a road in Afghanistan. Back home, he feels like a stranger. As he struggles to find his place in the world, he meets a horse destined for the slaughterhouse and a woman bent on rescuing the strays of the world, including him.

Blair Greyson moves to Masonville to look after her ailing grandfather and give her rescue horses a home. Right away she butts heads with a surly former Marine. Despite a rocky start, they come to an agreement: Blair will board Garrett's rescue horse and he'll help with repairs around her farm.

Garrett finds purpose working with Blair—and falls in love with her. But she's hiding a secret. Can she forgive herself and accept Garrett's love, or will she let guilt and regret continue to rule her life?

He pushed himself to his feet, disconcerted by his unsteadiness. He made a few halting steps toward the gate as Blair ran into the yard.

“I forgot my sweater,” she said, grabbing the garment from the back of a chair and slipping it on. “It’s cooler than I thought. Are you sure you don’t want to watch the fireworks with us?”

“No, I—”

His words were cut off by a loud explosion, and his only thought was that he had to protect Blair. He grabbed her and threw her to the ground, covering her body with his. He was under attack. Why was Blair in Afghanistan? How could he keep her safe?

Through the chaos and noise he heard her muffled voice beneath him. “Garrett, you’re crushing me.”

He shifted his weight slightly. “Shh. I’m sorry. You have to stay down and quiet. I can’t let them hurt you.”

She stopped struggling. “Who’s going to hurt me?”

“Can’t you hear the mortar fire? I have to protect you.”

Her hand rubbed his back in gentle circles. “It’s all right, Garrett. It’s only fireworks. It can’t hurt us. We’re safe here.”

He lifted his head and looked around. He was in Cole and Lauren’s back yard in Masonville. There were no bombs, no shelling, no Taliban. He looked down into Blair’s face, into the pity in her eyes. He rolled off her, disgusted with himself.

Disgusted and scared. He was losing his mind.

MAIL-ORDER OLIVIA

Kathleen Lawless is very excited by the launch of her first ever Mail Order Bride Book, MAIL ORDER OLIVIA.

About the Book

Who to believe?

Olivia thought Robert was dead. A year-and-a-half later and newly widowed, she comes across Robert's ad for a mail-order bride. Seeking his protection for herself and her daughter, she goes after the truth, and gets more than she bargained for.

Robert believed Olivia never wanted to see him again, and is finally ready to move on from the heartbreak. When Olivia shows up claiming to be his mail-order bride, the sight of her brings back all the pain of losing her the first time. Seeing her with another man's child adds salt to the wound.

Can this couple move past the pain and betrayal to find new happiness?

Snippet

Robert Fulsom paced the train platform in Yuma, practicing what he would say to his mail-order bride when she arrived.  Sorry for dragging her across the country didn’t seem adequate.  He had to make sure she realized it was nothing to do with her—it was him.  He simply wasn’t ready to take on a wife.
He glanced again at the telegram in his hand.  Olive Brown.  He had no idea what she looked like, but even her name sounded drab, poor thing.  He’d heard many of these mail-order brides were either homely or plump, forced to marry a stranger sight-unseen because they had no suitors back east.  He had to tactfully ensure she didn’t think he was rejecting her because of her appearance.
***
In the cramped train seat, Olivia cradled her sleeping daughter to her chest, grateful for the respite after more than a week of trying to keep Chloe entertained, when all the little bundle of energy wanted to do was crawl around and try to walk.  At thirteen months, Olivia expected Chloe would be taking her first step any day.
She deliberately hadn’t used her real name in her telegram to Robert. At first, she’d been overjoyed to learn he wasn’t dead as she’d been led to believe.  Then doubt set in.  Why had he not returned for her as promised?  And why was his ad for a bride tucked into a coat pocket of her deceased husband?

THE SOUND OF LOVE

Don't miss the Rafflecopter Giveaway at the end of the post!

The Sound of Love
Senses of Love Book 1
by
Kyle Shoop
Genre: Contemporary Romance

"Words that can't be spoken can still be sung."

Experience the compelling, heart warming romance of Charlotte and John as they express thru music what can't be said in words.

Charlotte and John grew up as young orphans in the secluded outskirts of a rural town. Each day, they’d sneak out to the nearby forest to escape the cold grasp of the orphanage’s tyrant-ruler. However, the safety that came from their friendship was suddenly ripped apart when they got caught.

Years later, Charlotte conquered the marketing world in downtown Portland. Having gained normalcy in her life since her days in the orphanage, Charlotte never expected her world to be turned upside down by John abruptly being thrust back into her life.

But the years since the orphanage had not at all been kind to John, leaving him unable to open up to Charlotte about the details. Can John’s love for songwriting be the key to finally opening up?

Would the reunited friends discover that John's rekindled love for music also rekindle their long-awaited, and much desired, love?

Excerpt

The image was seared into her mind, and the internal pull toward the square’s corner intensified. She had never before seen a homeless child – on any street, let alone at Pioneer Square.

It wasn’t the shock of seeing the child that struck a chord most with Charlotte. Rather, it was an image in her mind that she couldn’t escape. Flooding into her mind was the unwelcome memory of herself being homeless on a corner at the same young age. Nothing could ever block the memory of sitting shivering in the snow with no hope for the future – let alone each passing minute that made her more terrified of what the deathly cold evening on the street corner would bring. Five years old was too young for a girl to be put in that situation –unless it was what the scoffing desires of fate craved. But then it happened. A simple act by a stranger. The act was so simple that even the stranger probably wouldn’t remember it all these years later. But it meant the world to her. Indeed, it gave Charlotte the world, as without the grace of that stranger while she was so young, Charlotte knew that she would have been left braving the night on a cold, snowy street corner just like the child before her eyes now. Without the act of that stranger, the cold grip of entropy would have surely sealed her fate so long ago.

The image looming large in Charlotte’s mind suddenly became reality when it was interrupted by a car horn behind her. Charlotte looked up to see that the light had now turned green. Panic unexpectedly set in. She didn’t want to leave this situation, but also didn’t want to make a decision that could somehow be contrary to the trajectory she had chosen, and worked so hard for in life. In an instant, she was conflicted. She didn’t want to do something to allow fate to know that she
recognized she was cheating it. But at the same time, she did not want the young child to never receive that same simple act from a stranger.

With the blare of another horn from behind her, the whim of Charlotte’s stronger instinct won. She owed that stranger from long ago her life, and tonight she was going to repay that debt. She quickly pulled to the shoulder of the road right next to the cold street corner on which the child lay.

She decided to give the child her warm coat. That was it. Charlotte felt guilty for it not being an act of the same magnitude which the stranger did for her so long ago, but she justified her decision of giving the coat as being all that would be needed for tonight. Then, if she still saw the child on the street the next night, she might decide to do what the stranger had done for her. Besides, this child wasn’t alone out there like she was all those years ago. An adult was with this child. Her situation was different than this child’s.

“It’s just a coat. That’s all.” Charlotte actually said out loud to herself as she got out of her car and into the frigid night air. At the moment she realized she said the words aloud, Charlotte was instantly angry at herself. Not for the decision she was making to give the child the adult-sized warm winter coat she was wearing. Instead, she was mad that, for the first time in a long time, she had actually verbalized the internal struggle she had with fate. And now fate could hear that she knew it existed.

But she had made the decision. Charlotte was going to do something to help the child. If she changed her mind now, then fate would know it had leverage over her. Charlotte was not about to let that happen.

She approached the street corner, with the intent to make this a quick transaction. But as she approached the child and the adult, Charlotte instantly knew her plan wasn’t going to work out. The scene was not at all as she imagined. Quicker and quicker her mind raced in a panic as she tried to figure out what to do on this deathly-cold night.

CAT'S PAW COVE BOOKS

Don't forget the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of the post!

Taken by the Imp
Cat's Paw Cove Book 13
by
Sharon Buchbinder
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Can a jinni and a warlock cook up a better way to help the poor?

Dexter Graham has no trouble making money as a financial wizard—as long as he doesn’t leave his home. He finds it nearly impossible to be with other people, because he’s a telepath who gets swamped by their thoughts. Prompted by an unexpected visitor from the past who reveals shocking family secrets, he takes a risk and visits his brother in Cat’s Paw Cove. Will the trip make things better or worse?

Ynez Saghira is a gifted chef at the Feline Fine Retirement Home who yearns to be financially independent and open her own café. She has lots of talent and creative ideas but lacks the capital to start her own business. What’s a poor imp to do?

Dexter and Ynez join forces to quiet the voices in his head, build her business, and ferret out family mysteries. Will the secrets draw them closer together or push them apart?

Pushing the covered cart down the hallway, Ynez cursed the lush carpet yet another time. When they designed this place, they forgot about the staff, that was for sure. How did the cleaners get their carts through this undergrowth? Ah, silly me, magic. She waggled her fingers and it floated up to the newcomer’s door.

She tapped lightly. “In-room dining, Mr. Graham.”

The door opened a crack and one sky-blue eyeball stared at her. “Could you leave it out here, please?”

“No, sir.” She straightened her shoulders. “I will not allow the quality of my food to decline because you leave it out here too long.”

The door flew open.

“What did you say?”

She stared into the face of the most beautiful man she’d ever met. Like a marble statue in the Louvre, all symmetrical proportions, cheek bones to die for, a gorgeous beard and a head of golden hair that screamed for her fingers to dive into and pull his lush ruby lips to her mouth.

He’s staring at me. He heard my thoughts, my foolish, lustful feelings.

Mortified, her face blazing, she said, “Can I bring the food into your room and serve it properly, please. It’s temperature controlled.”

He smiled, bowed, and swept his hand inside. “Yes, please do come in. Can you stay and keep me company while I eat? Do you have time?”

What the heck?

“Um, sure, the dinner rush is over, and the cleaning crew is on the job, so I’m pretty open.” Why was he acting as if he hadn’t heard all her inappropriate thoughts? Was this a trick?

“Thank you, I really appreciate it.” He pointed to the small kitchen. “I guess we can sit in here. Mind the cat dishes. Brutus is hiding under the bed.”

“Okay,” she pushed the cart in with her fingertip, allowing it to continue to float. What the heck. He knew what kind of place this was, didn’t he?

“Whoa. Neat trick. I wish I could do that.” He pulled up a chair. “Smells wonderful.”
Setting the table, she pointed to a wine glass. “White or red?”

“White, please.” Openly staring at her now, his gaze roamed over her face, hair, and arms, stopping at her tattoos. “Those are beautiful armbands. Are they flames?”

She nodded and continued uncovering dishes. “I’m an imp and a chef. My element is fire—specifically smokeless fire.”

“Nice.” Unlike other men, his gaze never lingered on her ample breasts. “Your hair—is it changing colors as we talk? Or is it my eyes?” He laughed. “I’m sorry I’m so curious. I mostly chat with people by computer. Lots of practice with my witty repartee—online.”

“Oh, yes, I can see that.” She shook her head and chuckled as she placed salt and pepper on the table. This guy.

“My brother tells me I have zero boundaries and even fewer people skills. It’s all so new to me. And I want to know everything.”

Charlotte Redbird, Ghost Coach
Cat's Paw Cove Book 12

Guest Post for Charlotte Redbird, Ghost Coach

Leprechauns—Lucky in Love?

One of the fun parts about writing paranormal, supernatural, or magical stories is the research. When I wrote Charlotte Redbird, Ghost Coach, I thought I had a pretty good handle on leprechauns. After all, Ancestry.com told me I’m Irish (mostly), so that little guy on the cereal box was practically a relative. Isn’t that all I needed to know?

Um. No. I needed to know if they were as lucky in love as they are with their gold, so I had to do a little digging. Here are some fun facts about my red-headed relatives from the Emerald Isle.

• In the supernatural world, they fall into the fairy family and they live underground.
• Music and dancing—the Irish jig, of course—are their passions.
• They are usually pictured as tiny wizened old men with red beards—but some say that’s an old stereotype.
• If you can catch one, they can grant three wishes, but remember, they are tricksters!
• Iron bars can contain them. If you nab one, have an iron cage handy, otherwise they can teleport away from you!
• While we think of their job as guarding protecting pots of gold, their real vocation is shoemaking.
• They are excellent cobblers. However, they never make a pair of shoes. They only make one!
• Mustard is a great condiment for hot dogs—but the yellow sauce will also burn the skin of a leprechaun.
• It’s a good thing they have great regenerative powers to recover from mustard burns. They heal quickly and can heal others.

Are they lucky in love? I couldn’t find an answer to that question, so I made something up. You’ll have to read Charlotte Redbird, Ghost Coach, to find out. Happy reading!

Sometimes the dead need a life coach, too.

Driven out of Chicago by a spiteful heiress, life coach Charly Redbird is ready for a change. She moves to Florida to be closer to her family and vows to be more selective about future clients.

With the help of Dylan Graham, a hunky real estate agent, Charly finds a perfect home across the street from a cemetery. When he shows up with a plant and two tiny balls of fluff as a housewarming present, Charly thinks she might be smitten with more than the kittens.

A new client appears at her door and asks for Charly's help, but the woman happens to be a permanent resident of the cemetery. Can Charly convince the restless spirit to move to another neighborhood—or will she take on a new role: Life Coach for the Dead?

AN AGENT FOR JUDITH! #newrelease #CarolinClemmons

That’s correct—today is release day for AN AGENT FOR JUDITH, Pinkerton Matchmaker Series, book 79. I love this series and hope you do, too. This one is set in an area to which my husband and I love traveling, northern New Mexico.

Here’s the blurb for AN AGENT FOR JUDITH:

Judith McAdams has vowed to rescue her brother. Peyton Knight is determined to protect his group. Together they must outwit a cruel and powerful man.

Judith’s brother in New Mexico hasn’t been heard from since a letter saying he was being bedeviled by a neighbor who wanted his ranch. Judith wires the marshal to check on her brother. When he refuses, she goes to the Pinkerton Detective Agency in Denver. There she learns that as a civilian she can’t accompany a Pinkerton agent on a case. However, if she marries a Pinkerton agent she can become an agent.

Peyton values his job as a Pinkerton agent and is good at being a lawman. To keep the job he reluctantly agrees to a marriage of convenience with Judith. Together they will go to her brother’s rescue. Peyton is impressed with the beautiful and spirited redhead—if only she would admit he knows best. He even admires his mother-in-law but how did he end up with her on their trip? At least he’s found three men he trusts to help him rescue the brother.

Their journey is filled with obstacles. Will Judith’s brother still be alive by the time they reach him? When they resolve the ranch issue, will Judith and Peyton part ways?

AN AGENT FOR JUDITH is a sweet western historical romance.

Excerpt

Judith sat with hands folded in her lap in what she hoped appeared a patient pose. Inside she wanted to rail at the man to hurry. Her brother could be injured and dying as she sat here. She believed Josiah was still alive because she was certain she’d know in her heart if he had passed away.
Finally, Mr. Gordon pushed aside the papers. “What is it you want us to do, Miss McAdams?”
“I want to hire one of your agents to accompany me to the ranch and see what’s happened to my brother. If this bully of a neighbor is creating trouble, I want him arrested.”
“Accompany you?” He shook his head. “Sorry, but we don’t allow civilians on our cases, Miss McAdams.”
“I’m the client, Mr. Gordon. My brother is my only living relative and I insist on going with whomever you send. I assure you I’m quite competent in hunting with gun and bow and can even throw knives with precision. I’ve spent time camping and know how to track as well as any Indian or scout.”
“Hmm. In that case, you should become an agent and marry him. I won’t have a man and woman traveling together in conditions that would ruin your name or put you in danger. The marriage is a paper one that you can have annulled after the case if you wish.”
Good thing she was sitting because that knocked the floor from under her. She was glad she hadn’t mentioned Abigail yet. She sorted her thoughts before replying.
“Becoming an investigator does appeal to me. I believe I have the skills needed to be a good agent.” She shook her head. “But, marriage to a stranger? I’m not sure.”
Mr. Gordon rested his hands on the desk and met her gaze. “Those are my conditions.”
She rose and paced back and forth in front of his desk. “It would only be on paper? You’re sure I can get an annulment?”
“I am. The official who performs the wedding grants the annulments for those who wish them. I might add that most choose to remain married.”
“Hmph, I can assure you that I won’t.” She resumed her seat. “All right, I seem to have no choice but to agree to your conditions. Who is this agent you wish me to marry? I hope he’s your very best investigator and quite strong.”
Mr. Gordon signaled to someone behind her. “Send in Peyton Knight.”
Soon a handsome man strolled into the room. He was above average in height—likely several inches over six feet—with dark hair and blue eyes. His wide shoulders gave the appearance of strength in spite of his trim waist.
“You wanted to see me?”
“Have a seat. Miss Judith McAdams, may I introduce Peyton Knight? Peyton, Miss McAdams has come to hire us to help rescue her brother in New Mexico Territory.”
Peyton nodded to her and took a seat. “What part of the state and what kind of trouble is he having?”
Archie slid the letters into a large envelope. “I’ll let her tell you after your wedding.”
Peyton jumped to his feet. “What! Archie, I told you I don’t want to get married right now.”
He looked at her. “No offense intended, Miss McAdams. When I do marry, I’ll choose who I wed.”
The director sent him a stern stare. “Calm down. You know this will be a marriage on paper only, and your bride will be going along as your partner. If you plan to continue as a Pinkerton agent, that is.”
Peyton stabbed a finger at him. “You know danged well I do. You also know I don’t want a woman partner to babysit while I’m on a case.”
Judith stood up. “Babysit? I’ll be the one babysitting. I can out shoot, out hunt, and out track you any day. No one has to babysit me. In addition to going as an agent, I’m also the client. So, if I agree to marry you—a big if—then you’ll be working for me, understand?”
He tapped his chest. “I work for Pinkerton Detective Agency and I take my orders from Archie Gordon, not some prissy redhead.”
Archie put two fingers to his lips and whistled. “Stop this. You can continue this discussion after the wedding while you’re on the way to New Mexico. Right now, Peyton, go pack your gear. You’ll be going as a wealthy man looking to buy a ranch. Get outfitted as such.”
Peyton glared at his boss then stomped from the room, muttering under his breath.

I hope your interest is piqued. I love this story and hope you will, too!

I'll be giving away a $10 Amazon gift card to someone who comments today. Be sure and leave your email in case you're the winner.

BIG LOVE -- FINDING THE ONE!

Don't forget the Rafflecopter giveaway at the end of the post!

Big Love
Finding the One Book 2
by
K.M. Scott
Genre: Contemporary Romance

From New York Times bestselling author K.M. Scott comes the second standalone romance in the Finding The One series!

Clare Schiffer has always lived in the small town of Hansonville, but she dreams of more than the ordinary life that seems so acceptable to everyone she knows. Especially when it comes to love.

She’s had mediocre love in the past. Now if she’s going to fall in love, it needs to be big and unforgettable.

And just as she begins to believe that only exists in movies, a brand new man comes to town. Matt is good looking and charming, and in no time at all, he’s won over everyone in Hansonville.

Except for Clare. Matt isn’t sure of much in life, but he knows one thing for certain. He’s going to make the beautiful brunette with the standoffish way his, and when he does, the past won’t matter for either of them.

He threw the sheet off his legs and spun himself so his feet hit the floor, but in just a second, his legs buckled. I ran into his room and grabbed him before he collapsed, barely able to hold his much larger frame up as he tried to stop himself from falling.

Helping him back into bed, I couldn't help notice he had great legs. Perfectly shaped, tanned, and muscular, they fit the rest of him I'd seen the other day. Whoever this guy was, he took care of himself before he ended up lying in the weeds on the side of Highway 27. He looked like he would be right at home on a beach somewhere.

A nude beach. In some exotic location where gorgeous people with beautiful bodies spread out sensually on the sand. Far away from Hansonville.

I found myself lost in thought imagining him lying on that beach with those sexy legs and washboard abs slathered in oil and didn't realize he saw me staring at him until he cleared his throat.

"So, are you a nurse or just someone who likes to check out people at the hospital?" he asked, tearing me from the final remnants of my fantasy.

Looking up from his legs now covered by the sheet again, I shook my head far too quickly and felt my cheeks grow hot from embarrassment. "What? No. I mean…no, I'm not a nurse and no, I don't like to check people out. I'm here for something else entirely."

He smiled and tried not to laugh at my social clumsiness, but it was no use. Chuckling, he said,
"Well, if you aren't either of those things, why were you looking into my room? Are you a patient? Do they have a psych floor and you got off it?"

“What? No!”

God, he was rude!

“Well, why were you looking in at me then?”

I didn't answer since I didn't have anything to say that didn't make me look like a fool. His smile faded away, and a darkness settled into his expression. "Are you another one of those reporters from the local yokel newspaper curious if I got my memory back or someone from the police to grill me for the hundredth time?"

Instantly, I became defensive. "No. I was just walking down the hall and you barked out that you wanted a drink. That's all."

He leaned back and sighed. "Oh. Well, okay."

I wanted to tell him to stick his attitude straight up his ass, but then I stopped myself. The guy was trapped in a hospital without any memory of who he was or what caused him to end up on the side of the road on the outskirts of a small town few people had ever heard of. No wonder he was cranky.
Not that he had to be nasty about things.

"I'll get a nurse for you now," I mumbled as I turned to leave.

"I'm sorry about thinking you were a nurse. In my defense, it was an honest mistake, don't you think?" he said, confusing me for a moment before I remembered that I was still dressed in my vet tech uniform.

Looking back at him, I smiled. "Yeah, I guess so."

He flashed me a smile that was a perfect mix of sexy and sincere, and for a moment I just stood there next to his bed staring at him. Dark-haired and fit. The newspaper had definitely gone with understatement this time. If I had to describe him, I would have said drop dead gorgeous with dark hair and eyes like a Greek god.

For the second time in five minutes, he caught me lost in thought about him and asked, "So if you're not a nurse, why are you dressed like one?"

Once again embarrassed by the effect he had on me, I mumbled something about taking care of animals and then said, "I'll go get that nurse for you now. For the water. A drink of water."

Jesus, you'd think I never saw a good-looking man before in my life. I mean, he definitely didn't look like the local guys, but what was I thinking calling him a Greek god. Even if it was only to myself, what the hell was that about?

Until the End
Final Hour Book 3
by
Juno Rushdan
Genre: Romantic Thriller

He's strong. Fierce. Relentless.
And he may be her only chance of surviving the night.

Gray Box operative Castle Kinkade always gets the job done, no matter how tough the assignment. But when he agrees to protect white-hat hacker Kit Westcott, Castle's loyalty is tested like never before. Trapped in the closest of quarters, protective instincts flaring, he can feel the ice surrounding his heart melt...and he knows he'd do anything to keep Kit safe.

Even defy the rules that shaped his life.

Castle is the last person Kit should confide in, let alone be attracted to, but he's the only ally she has left. Under threat of imminent attack—and a chilling conspiracy that hits too close to home—Castle and Kit are forced to put their hearts and lives on the line...and stop at nothing to face the greatest danger the world has ever known.

Castle’s blood pressure was so high he could hear the rush of it.
Kit was a liar. A habitual, no, pathological, no, no, compulsive liar! His gut churned with white-hot anger, but the sucker punch of betrayal was worse.
She was innocent of collusion with terrorists. That much he believed. But he could only buy stock in eighty percent of what came out of her mouth. And it wouldn’t be so bad if the remain-ing twenty percent wasn’t going to get them killed.
He sharpened his focus on the task at hand. They were going to get through this, alive, so he could strangle her later.
Castle held on to her waist as he guided her to swing one leg over the side, followed by the other. The breeze blew her dress up higher than appropriate and he caught an indecent glimpse of her ass. Sweeter than he’d imagined.
She stared up at him with those crazy-beautiful eyes, trying to suck him back in.
Damn it to hell, why did he enjoy touching her so much? Why had it taken every ounce of strength in him not to kiss her back earlier when she was shivering in his bed, pressed up against him, wearing nothing but his T-shirt?
Why did he still want to kiss her?
“Put your toes on the tiny lip,” he said, referring to the barely-there ledge, keeping his voice controlled, low.
“Tiny is an overstatement.” She struggled to get her footing stable, her thin-soled shoes slipping around with no treads, but he held onto her.
“I won’t let you fall, Kit.”
Her anxious gaze locked onto his and narrowed. “I know. You want the pleasure of killing me yourself.”
And why oh why did her sassy remarks not only torque him tighter and tighter but also turn him on brighter than a popped flare in the pitch-black night?
“You probably want to use your bare hands around my throat,” she said.
“So you’re a psychic liar. I was trying to pinpoint how to classify you, but I don’t think that one is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.”
“Whatev—” She swallowed the rest of the word, controlling her tongue before she pushed him from peeved to righteously pissed.
About time she advanced to Go and collected a clue.
“Those shoes are a problem,” he said. She’d be better off barefoot out here. He took another look at the six-inch thick wall separating her bedroom balcony from the main one and sized up the length of her arm span.
Holding on to one balcony and reaching over to grasp the other might prove tricky for her. Doing it at night in those slippery shoes was suicide.
He gestured for her to come back and helped lift her over the rail.
“Climb on.” He knelt. “I’ll piggyback you over.”
For once, she simply did as he told her. No smart-ass remark, no protests. No questions. Maybe she did trust him, at least in this.
Standing upright, he adjusted her weight on his back, getting it balanced. “Hold on tight.”
She wrapped her legs around his hips and clamped her arms around his neck in a choke hold.
“Not that tight,” he hissed, shooting a quick glance over his shoulder at the door. The curtain was in place, giving them precious minutes—perhaps only seconds—that might mean the difference between success and death.
He swung his leg over the side and shimmied across the ledge.
The curtain rustled. Their time just ran out.
He stepped up the pace, reaching across the wall to the other side as the drapes were drawn. Castle stared at a man wearing glasses. His gaze was hard and pitiless. He matched Kit’s description of Bravo.
Castle wouldn’t be able to draw his weapon until they were on the other side and he had a free hand. “Kit, reach into my holster and grab my gun?”
“Wh-what? I’ll fall.”
“You won’t.”
“Oh God. I’m going to be sick. I can’t.”
“You can. Trust me. They’re coming. Do it!”
She fumbled inside his jacket, her body plastered to his, legs in a death grip around his waist, and drew his Maxim 9.
The safety was already off.
“Aim at the other balcony,” he said, “finger on the trigger, squeeze, and shoot at anything that moves.”
A swish echoed in the wind as the balcony door opened.
Kit screamed, ducking her head, cheek pressed against his neck, and started shooting, wild and erratic.
For fuck’s sake. Were her eyes even open?
Silencers on both sides softened the pop of the shots. Bits of stone from the concrete wall sprayed in the air. Bullets cracked by his head, too close for comfort.
Castle hooked his leg on the rail of the living room balcony and rolled over, nearly knocking against the steel staircase that went up to the roof. He tucked Kit beneath him, using his body as a shield. “Please tell me your eyes were open when you fired?”
“You said nothing about my eyes.”
Wasn’t it implicit in the bit about aiming?
He snatched the gun from her, hopped to his feet, and aimed for the master bedroom balcony—with his eyes open.
No sign of Bravo or any from his band of merry hitmen.
Shit. “Change of plan.” Gripping her elbow, he hoisted her up. “They’re about to rush us, coming in through the living room doors. Can you swim?”
She gulped and looked over the balcony. “Oh, sweet Lord. You want us to jump?”
“Yes.”
“What if we miss the pool?”
“Push off from the railing when you jump. You won’t miss. Take off your shoes first so you don’t slip.”
“Stop making everything sound so flipping easy. There’s four hundred feet between us and going splat.” She shoved the flats in her bag.
“It’s more like forty feet.” He helped her stand up on the top of the balustrade. “Grip the handrail of the staircase.” He gestured to the metal bar right beside her. “Steady yourself.”
“If we don’t die, we’ll break bones.”
A distinct possibility. “Who’s the crybaby now? If we don’t jump, we don’t make it.”
Once she was in place with stable footing, Castle trained the gun on the French doors, ready to lay waste to anyone who dared set foot on the balcony.
“This plan sucks!”
“Did I neglect to mention I have a degree in sucky planning?”
