CONTEST WINNERS AND A BIT MORE

By Caroline Clemmons

Thank you to all who entered my birthday contest. Although I value each of you, I promised only 5 gift cards for $5 each from Amazon. I let my Labradoodle dog, Baxter pick the names from a bowl. He loves to play with paper and eagerly participated. Fortunately I rescued the names before he chewed on the entries. Jasmine, my Balinese cat, watched, but she is too shy to participate. Besides, she is certain cats are far too regal to do anything but be adored.

Here are the winners:

Ruth Ann Campbell

Sheila Gravely

Scarlet O’Hare

Bonnie Rathjen

Debra Wolsleben

Congratulations! I’ll send your $5. Amazon Gift Card via your email.

Each time I write you, I like to highlight a book. Today, I’m explaining about a single title historical western romance, SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME. I started writing this short book years ago to surprise my mom. The mother of the heroine is named for my mom (as her maiden name), Lena Mae Phifer. I knew she would be thrilled and tickled to see her name in the story. Unfortunately, she passed away before I finished the book. I was very close to my mom and was hit hard by her death—even though she was 94 when she died. We are never ready to lose a loved one, are we? I had to put the book away for quite a while before I could finish it, but I am pleased with the results. This is mostly sweet, but does have one tastefully-described, mild love scene.

Here is a bit about the book:

After fleeing an abusive husband six years ago, Beth Jeffers wants nothing more than to protect her son, Davey, and to help her mother operate a boarding house. The women in her family have had no luck with men, and she has no intention of letting any man influence her son. Not even Matt Petrov, no matter how much her lonely heart urges otherwise.

Federal Marshall Matt Petrov, also known as Lone Wolf Peters, fell in love with Beth the first time he saw her. Back then she was another man’s wife, so he kept his longing a secret, and saved his love for her for six horrific years. Now, the lovely widow and he have crossed paths again. This time, he intends to risk all for a chance at happiness with Beth. First he must rescue his distant kinsman from an assassin’s clutches. Can Matt succeed before his kin is killed? And will his secrets shatter the love he and Beth share?

To buy the book, click on SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME.

Not long ago, I changed the book's cover. The one above is by Charlene Raddon of Silver Sage Covers. Don't you love the new cover? The sunset colors appeal to me.

Leaves are turning and falling. Our weather has been mostly pleasant the last week. If you live in the area hit by Helene, I hope your family and your home are all right.

Take care and keep reading.

The Fae King's Labyrinth by Elisa Rae

Someone stole Azulin’s true name and now he’s trapped in a labyrinth with a human woman to protect.

But could she be more than a hindrance? Could she be the key to his freedom?

The Fae King’s Labyrinth

Courts in Conflict Book 2

by Elisa Rae

Genre: Light Fantasy Romance

Someone stole Azulin’s true name. Cursed to ride with the Wild Hunt during each full moon, he is helpless against the Unseelie king’s will. Over the years, the curse’s grip has strengthened, making Azulin’s magic difficult to control. Fighting the curse has exhausted his spirit to the point that he despairs of breaking its hold on him. Then one full moon, the curse places him in a labyrinth, not a hunt. Perhaps this is his chance, or maybe just a new form of torture.

Calypso is a shapeshifter who can’t change form. Living as an unpaid caregiver and laborer in her sister’s household, her presence is barely tolerated in their insular community. When a strange fae threatens her pregnant sister, Calypso sacrifices herself. Perhaps an honorable death would give her life purpose. Instead, she ended up fighting for her life in a pitch-black labyrinth.

The Fae King’s Labyrinth is a light, fantasy romance novella about a relationship between a Seelie fae and a mortal woman. It features fae, found family, fated mates, and a romance between a noble and a commoner, played out in a perilous maze and an equally dangerous fae court.

The Unseelie's Wallflower

Courts in Conflict Book 1

Greyson hides many things from the Unseelie Court when they invade his estate each autumn for the Wild Hunt. During his required appearance as host, he is surprised to find a human among the glittering fae. She can see him even when he is using his stealth magic, which means only one thing—they are soul mates. Can he protect her amidst the swirl of fae politics and a plot against her life?

Lyra has grown up among the fae. She has been trained to be the perfect servant. Then her master brings her to the Unseelie Court event of the year and demands she demonstrate her skills to nobles. With the promise of freedom as a motivator, she willingly agrees. Then she realizes her master’s true plan thanks to the intimidating fae lord hosting the event. Though why he would be invested in her fate is a mystery.

The Unseelie’s Wallflower is a light, fantasy romance novella about a relationship between an Unseelie and a human woman. It features faes, fated mates, and a romance between a noble and a servant, all played out against a backdrop of the peril, politics, and maneuverings of the Unseelie Court.

Lily of the Valley by Megan Derr

A hunted princess. A reclusive woodcutter. A laughing forest.

Lily of the Valley

by Megan Derr

Genre: Fantasy Romance

Lily is the first crown princess her kingdom has ever had, and many look forward to having a queen on the throne someday. Others are vehemently against it, and the anger stirred up by dramatic and severe changes to certain laws is causing even more turmoil.

When that tension finally explodes, Lily finds herself running for her life, forced to leave behind everything she knows and plunge blindly into the dense, dangerous forest that surrounds the royal palace. A forest said to be filled with ancient ruins, monsters, and ghosts who laugh at unwary travelers.

Instead of finding monsters and ghosts, Lily is found by a woodcutter, gruff and quiet and clearly not pleased to be saddled with an uninvited guest who doesn't even know how to fetch water from a well. But Lily has nowhere else to go, and no way of getting home safely, not when there are people still looking to remove her head.

If she hopes to live long enough to claim her throne, she must first prove her worth to the woman who can't wait to be rid of her.

"Who is that?" Lily asked, staring down from the balcony into the main courtyard of the palace.

Five figures had arrived, dressed entirely in black and riding dark horses. How very dramatic. They bore no crests, and she hadn't heard a crier announce them, only the horns to signal important visitors had arrived.

Next to her, looking up from the book she was reading, her handmaiden Clarissa wrinkled her nose. "I've no idea. They look like bandits."

Lily set aside the cards she'd been reading through for her speech to open the spring games at the beginning of the month, stood, and gathered her skirts. "I'm going to go see."

"I was just at the good part," Clarissa said with a sigh as she marked her place, tucked the book into a pocket, and followed her.

As they reached the hallway, two more of her four handmaidens joined them: Alice and Penelope. Poor Leigh was still sick. Lily had sat with her last night and read to her for a couple of hours, and managed to get her to drink some tea.

People greeted them as they walked through the halls, but Lily didn't linger to speak with anyone, though a few clearly wanted her to. No, she continued on stubbornly to the receiving hall, where sure enough, the five dark figures had gathered.

She held back to look them over. Five, all men with scruffy beards, dirty clothes, tromping around like this was their palace. Big, every last one, though two were on the lean muscle side rather than the wall of muscle. The one who seemed to be in charge did bear a crest, a gold broach pinned to his left shoulder, though she couldn't make out any details at this distance.

They all bore weapons and weren't listening as the servants tried to tell them that weapons were not allowed on the premises, save those carried by the royal guards.

Time to do her job. Setting her shoulders, lifting her chin, Lily walked briskly down the hall, flanked by her handmaidens. "What is the cause of all this ruckus?" she said in the ringing tones her tutors had drilled into her. A voice that could pierce a crowded room, no matter how large.

All eyes turned to her, including the visitors. The man with the broach watched her like a cat watched a mouse, but if he thought she would be intimidated by such nonsense, he would soon find himself mistaken.

"What is going on here?" she demanded, drawing to a stop at a perfectly appropriate distance of five paces. "Who are you?" The gold broach was of a wolf's head opened on a snarl, and it was only gold plated.

The men stared at her with gross inappropriateness, and the man with the broach lingered on her tiara. She didn't normally wear one in the day to day, but she had an event in a couple of hours that required it, so she'd gone ahead and dressed for it, so she wouldn't have to go back to her room to change.

"Your Highness," Gold Broach finally said. "We are here to speak with High Majesty the King at the request of the Grand Duke."

"I see," Lily replied, not seeing at all. Her father had told her nothing this morning about a group of ruffians coming to see him. What was Ferdinand thinking, inviting men like this into the palace without at least giving her notice? "You'll forgive me if I wait until His Grace arrives to confirm that. Who are you?" She gave a slight upwards jerk of her chin to Clarissa, who immediately went off to find Ferdinand if he wasn't already on his way.

Gold Broach smiled like a hungry wolf. "I'm Richard, Your Highness, Richard Fortley, Captain of the Black Wolves."

Mercenaries? There were mercenaries in her palace?

SETTING AS A CHARACTER

 By Caroline Clemmons

One of the enjoyable things about writing is choosing and developing characters. You may not have considered this, but often the setting becomes a character. Many such series and books come to my mind, and I imagine the same is true for you.

Our world is filled with beautiful and awe inspiring places to inspire writers. Some books require a small town in the U.S. that does not have to be identified by state. Another might be set in a large city but need only generic description of the locale. Many may give detailed descriptions of major cities, complete with turns onto various streets.

Most of my books use the setting to advance the plot. For instance, in AN AGENT FOR LYDIA, the Badlands’ Hole in the Wall is crucial to the story. In MURDOCH’S BRIDE, the blizzard that strands the train and passengers could not have occurred in Florida.

So it is with my current series, Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides, set in (obviously) the Texas Hill Country of Central Texas. The gently rolling hills with abundant water made ranching a major industry in the 1800’s. It still is, although land is now being swallowed by developers.

Gentry McRae and his partner are ranchers near the town of Harrigan Springs in the first of the series, GENTRY AND THE MAILORDER BRIDE, Heidi Roth. The story moves into town for the second book about Sheriff Jesse Cameron and his mail order bride, Rosalin Arnold in JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Gentry’s youngest brother takes center stage in QUINN AND THE MAIL ORDER BRDE, Priscilla Bradford. Back in town for book four, runaway bride Maeve’s rescuer is Levi Iverson in LEVIAND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Heiress Elliana seeks refuge in Harrigan Springs with banker Keith Martin in KEITH AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE.

Currently being written is SIDNEY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Sidney Garton has sent for a mail order bride who can cook and keep house and also help him in Garton’s Mercantile. Antoinette Fourier is gorgeous, but she is not at all a bit of a surprise.

I hope you’ll read these books. I’ve loved writing them for you.

Breaker

The Price of Talent Book 1

On an alternate earth, a cataclysm has altered a subset of the population. Talents are persecuted for their psychic and physical mutations, giving rise to two conflicting societies based upon maintaining genetic purity. And the Source, a shadowy corporate entity dependent upon the exploitation of captive Talents, is hunting them…

Self-exiled to the Outside, Flynn Scot is oath-bound to a life of strict penance.

Cursed with a vicious temper and haunted by the blood-stained debauchery of his past, Flynn’s sworn off women, whiskey, and violence, and doesn’t give a damn about whispers of the coming war. He sure as hell isn’t in the mood to make good on a debt when it’s called in, especially when playing white knight outs him as a Talent, and the damsel in distress as his soulmate.

On the run from her future as a broodmare for the Source, escaped Talent Kara Jester is no distressed damsel.

And the last thing she wants is to be trapped in a blizzard with a surly—and frustratingly captivating—thug. Without the suppression meds holding her libido in check, her biology’s primed to procreate, and Flynn’s growled assurances that he won’t touch her doesn’t match the hunger in his eyes.

It doesn’t align with what fate has in store for them, either.

With elite troops hot on their heels and the border set to close, it’s a race to the North, away from Kara’s horrific future and towards the dark past Flynn wants to keep buried. Clinging to the shreds of his oath, he’s forced to choose between protecting the woman he’s afraid to love and letting out the animal he swore he’d never be again. Either may destroy him, if Kara’s secrets don’t get them killed first.

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR YOU

 By Caroline  Clemmons

Happy Birthday To Me!

Yes, once again it’s the annual celebration of my 39th birthday. So, I have a present for YOU.

I decided to give away 5 Amazon gift cards of $5.00 each to readers who enter the contest. All you have to do to enter is answer one question that can be found in the FREE reader sample of my sweet historical western romance, GENTREY AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE.

https://www.amazon.com/Gentry-Texas-Country-Order-Brides-ebook/dp/B0B6YN6QHK

The question is:

What is the name of the heroine’s selfish sister?

Email the answer to caroline @ carolineclemmons dot com.  Contest ends at midnight September 15, 2024 central standard time.

Here’s the blurb for the book:

Sometimes the perfect match is the one you didn’t expect.

Nothing much riles Gentry McRae. He works hard on the ranch he co-owns with his best friend, and is content with his life. He’s proud of all they’ve accomplished in the ten years since the war. That is, until his partner dies and leaves a fourth of the ranch to his mail-order bride—and wills the bride to Gentry.

“Now just a doggone minute, I don’t plan to marry for years!”

But, a single woman can’t reside on a ranch where four men live without ruining her reputation. What’s a good man to do, except marry the woman when she arrives?

Adelheid "Heidi" Roth has been spurned for being too plainspoken and too tall. In addition, her sister constantly makes fun of her for those reasons. That’s why—with many doubts—she’s willing to travel for months from Bavaria to Texas to marry a man who once lived in her town. When she arrives, she learns her prospective groom is dead, but left her a fourth of his share of a ranch. She has serious doubts, but agrees to wed Gentry to protect her reputation. Sure enough, from the next day, one event after the other happens. Is this the life she wants?

Thanks for stopping by!
