Spelled for Survivor

By: Melody Johnson

Coating her fingers in maple syrup and allowing a swarm of fire ants to engulf her left hand didn’t even make the top ten stupid stunts that Stevie Dynamite had performed on camera. She’d posed with a lion for the cover of Gem Magazine, swapped spit with 130 contestants on The Kiss is Right, and been bungee pushed—she certainly hadn’t jumped that time—off the Bloukrans Bridge for The Rock Life Foundation. Ah, the good ol’ days before her accident, when standing even two feet off the ground didn’t make her panic. At least that one had been for charity. This latest gig, competing on Castaway Casanova, wouldn’t benefit anyone except her father’s ego.

If the excruciating venom of a few dozen fire ants didn’t absolve her imagined sins from the Great Panty Debate, nothing would.

Everything you do spells disaster.

Stevie buried the thought before it took root again, but after twenty-five years, even a blatant lie could begin to sound true.

Her co-star and fellow final castaway, Parker Peters, openly gaped off camera, alternately at her standing on the beach before him, the ants biting her outstretched hand, and their director, Richie Lin, vehemently pointing at him to get on camera. Parker hadn’t been warned about the fire ants because he wouldn’t have agreed to it, and his raw reactions to Stevie’s “mishaps” had become fan favorite moments of the show. Her misery and his sarcasm were memes on every social channel. The fiercer their on-screen rivalry, the more viral their popularity. Ratings skyrocketed. Viewership soared. And the money poured in.

Supposedly. Stevie hadn’t seen a dime of it, but her father, Billy Dynamite, the Grammy-winning front man for Tar, was placated. For now. At least someone in the Dynamite family would profit from her efforts.

And her efforts had been nothing short of herculean, if she said so herself.

They were shooting Castaway Casanova on Blue Island, and like most tropical Pacific islands, its beaches were paradise incarnate—all sunny skies and smooth sand, foamy surf and crashing waves, salty breezes and coconut-bearing palm trees. Until the sun burns and bug bites and gritty everything had ruined the fantasy. Sand wedged into food and water, rubbed between every crevice, stung every scrape, and after four long weeks of filming, there were countless scrapes to sting. Her lips had split on episode three. Her knuckles had cracked on episode seven. And now, shooting episode nine, her chapped left hand was fire ant food.

Stevie gritted her teeth against the pain. This time tomorrow, Castaway Casanova would finally be a wrap, and she could put the entire sand-scraped, bug-bitten, sun-stinging experience in her rearview.

Parker cleared his throat. Are you okay? He mouthed, still off camera.

Well, maybe not the entire experience.

Stevie sucked in her bottom lip, their pre-arranged code that she was acting. Even if the ants weren’t.

Parker shook his head, unconvinced.

If he hesitates much longer, we’ll miss the shot.

Clearly, the crew shared Stevie’s concerns, because one of the grips pushed Parker into motion. He stumbled forward and fell to his knees in the sand before Stevie, on camera. Still openly gaping.

Richie Lin grinned, all teeth.

Parker stood and lifted his hands, looking beautifully baffled. If only the sizzle of his gorgeous green eyes could heat more than just her blood, she might not have had to eat all those uncooked crabs three episodes ago.

“Are they what I think they are?” he asked, horrified.

“If you think they’re fire ants, then yes!” Stevie fought to keep her face composed, so that the tears had a good canvas to flow down.

Parker blinked several times. Not the most loquacious response, but at least he managed not to look off camera. They were supposed to be marooned on Blue Island alone, after all, and she did not want to suffer a second take just because Parker got caught raising his eyebrows at a sound tech. Again.

Richie circled a finger at her to keep it going.

Stevie delivered her lines in her best I-don’t-know-what-I’m-doing voice. “The night air was cool for once, so I opened the tent flap to let in the breeze! I didn’t think it would let in anything else!”

“Buck up, Buttercup,” Parker muttered, still appalled but sharp enough to recover and deliver the zing everyone expected. “And maybe think next time.”

Richie did a little jig, waited another moment to capture Stevie’s signature squeal of disappointment—instead of the howl of agony building in her throat—and shouted, “Cut!”

Someone whooped.

Someone else clapped.

Stevie gulped in a deep, trembling breath. A calm-seeking breath. The kind of breath she might take while turning herself into a pretzel during goat yoga. Because if she started freaking out, she might not be able to stop. “Who has the hose?”

Parker tore his black tank top over his head—ah, those leading-man muscles—and began batting the ants from her arm. Which, of course, only incited the majority of the ants to bite harder, but the sentiment was touching.

“Some help here!” he snapped over the whooping and clapping.

“Coming!” Stevie’s underpaid agent/assistant/publicist/best friend, Claire Ann, elbowed through the crew, hose in hand. Stevie held out her arm, and Claire Ann blasted the ants with nearly enough spray pressure to remove a layer of skin along with the insects.

Richie clapped Parker on the shoulder. “Another clutch one-liner. You’re gold, man. Solid gold.”

Parker’s grip on his shirt tightened to a white knuckled fist. “Thanks.”

“And you, Stevie girl.” He kissed his fingertips. “Pure dynamite.”

Once the ants were cleared, Dr. Kimber stepped up beside Claire Ann. She examined Stevie’s arm, applied a topical anesthetic, wrapped the entire mess in some loose gauze, and warned her that the welts would probably worsen to pus-filled blisters before getting better.

Richie leaned in. “You think they might blister by tomorrow’s season finale?” he asked, clearly hopeful.

Dr. Kimber pushed a pair of turquoise glasses up her nose. “It’s possible,” she confirmed and handed Stevie a sleeve of Benadryl tablets “to get her through the worst of it.”

Parker’s cheeks turned an interesting shade of purple under his stubble.

Sure enough, as soon as the crew left to meet them on the summit of Mt. Ojos de Mar for tomorrow’s grand prize challenge, and they were alone for real, Parker lit into her. “What the hell, Stevie! Fire ants? Really? And I thought swimming with sharks was crossing the line.”

“I was safely caged the entire time.” Stevie tried not to shiver at the memory.

“You had nightmares for days after that shoot!”

She still did. Which was exactly the point, according to her father. Penance wasn’t supposed to be easy. “I survived.”

“I nearly didn’t just watching you,” Parker grumbled, stuffing a water bottle into the side pocket of his pack.

Surviving kinda sucks, Stevie thought, fingering the keloid scar on her right forearm. She’d physically survived her accident and mentally survived the online humiliation afterward. Funny that after all she’d survived, the atonement was the thing killing her.

Parker heaved his duffle onto one shoulder. “You ready for this hike?”

“Yep.” She hauled on her own pack, clipped her mini go-cam onto its strap, and grinned through the pain of her still stinging, and now welt-swollen, left hand. “Let’s move out.”

Parker eyed the trail before them warily. “Ladies first.”

Despite the hardships they’d endured on this shoot, Parker managed to trip her heartbeat even without his lopsided, aw-shucks smile. Unlike Stevie, who worked so hard to achieve her alter-ego on camera, Parker drew people to him simply by being himself. His glowing, dewy muscles, unkempt sandy hair, and calm, even-tempered personality combined with his biting wit was magnetic. Even now, with those thick brows furrowed in wary contemplation of the path ahead of them, he was delicious. Just standing and breathing—merely existing!—and Stevie found herself fantasizing about the flexed neck muscle between his ear and collarbone as he turned his head sideways to frown back at her. Oh, the many ways she could put those pouting, salt-chapped lips to good use

His effortless charisma would have been infuriating, except that along with their director, producers, the network, and most of America, Stevie was just as charmed

“Pops, she looks like an angel. Long wavy blonde hair with glints of red, big hazel eyes, and built like a nymph. Slender with legs that were molded by Venus. And she’s bright and snarky and just a breath of fresh air. So different from other women I’ve met.”

Pops whistled. “Molded by Venus? Son, you’ve got it bad.” He ran a hand through his sparse gray hair and shook his head. At age eighty-three, he was still in fine shape. “She just wants you to work for it. Hell, all women want their men to work for it. Why your grandmother made me plow her father’s fields. For free. She said she wanted his approval before she would grant me the pleasure of her company.” He grinned. “So, there I was, sweating my ass off in this humungous field, plowing away with some rickety old tractor, she and her daddy grinning from ear to ear, so proud that they had conned me into free labor.”

Aaron chuckled. “What did you do?”

“I plowed the rest of the damn field into a crazy-eight pattern, one that would require a do-over, and told her—and her daddy—that I wasn’t going to fix it unless and until she went on three dates with me.”

“You did not…”

“Yup. And she caved, too. Her Daddy was horrified that I would leave his fields in such disarray. Said he’d be the laughingstock of the Farmer’s Coop. He ordered her to date me. Of course, he had no way of knowing that I intended to charm her socks off. By the third date, she was all but begging me to marry her. And believe me, I made her beg. After the third date, I fixed her Daddy’s field and started dating Gladys Culpepper. Your grandmother was fit to be tied. Came storming up to me after church and tried to slap me. I grabbed her hand and nuzzled her neck—much to the consternation of all the old church ladies—and whispered, “You want me? The only way to get me is to agree to marry me at this very moment. I won’t be offering again.” Pops ran a hand through his thin gray hair. “She grabbed me by the ears, laid one on me, turned to poor Gladys, and declared, Charles Buckley won’t be calling you anymore, Gladys. He’s marrying me.”

Aaron stared at his grandfather. “What the heck did you do to charm her?”

ROSALIN AND JESSE PLACE!

 By Caroline Clemmons

What a lovely surprise I had last week! An email notified me that my clean sweet historical western romance, JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE, Book 2 of the Texas Hill Country Mail Order Brides Series, has tied for third place in the National Excellence in Story Telling (NEST) Contest for 2023 in the historical short category. That contest is sponsored by the Central Region Oklahoma Writers. Actually, it’s the only contest I entered, which increases the pleasure of being a finalist. At the time I was notified I was a finalist, I couldn’t fully appreciate the honor because Hero was in the hospital followed by rehab. He came home Wednesday, and I am happy to have him home and feeling better. He scared us there for a few days.

JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE is more the bride’s story than the groom’s. Rosalin Arnold grew up very sheltered in a large orphanage not far from the nation’s capital. Although beautiful, she was not adopted—possibly because many people don’t trust a redhead. In spite of her surroundings, Rosalin has grown into an elegant, graceful, and intelligent woman, but she is quite naïve about the world.

After leaving the protection of the orphanage, her first job was as a waitress in a restaurant located in a dismal area of Washington, D.C. Spunky Rosalin wasn’t afraid of hard work, but both her room in a boardinghouse and the nearby café were dismal. She viewed both as stepping stones to a better life. When she’d been waiting tables a year, a charming young man told her he could get her an easier job that paid more. Still naïve, she fell for his lies. Too late, she learned her boss was a devilish criminal who told her she had to pick pockets. After teaching her and others how to succeed at picking pockets, the man said she must bring back her quota each day. He also told her if she tried to leave, he’d find her and she’d suffer the consequences.

Rosalin had been taught right from wrong and hated being forced to steal. Though her boss and his henchmen terrified her, she vowed she would not show that fear. Rosalin also refused to accept that this was her fate—or that she could be transferred to work in the brothel if she didn’t follow orders. She and her roommate wanted to escape, but everyone they knew who’d tried was captured and bad things happened to them.

After biding her time, she felt ready to implement her plan. In addition, she intended to take her roommate and a young boy with her. She convinced her boss to let her and her roommate dress as elegant society ladies aided by the young boy to make a big score. Her boss agreed reluctantly. She chose a politician she saw accept a fat envelope. She speculated the envelope contained a bribe. In fact, the result was a bonanza, which provided enough cash for their escape—if she could evade their boss’ enforcers. Certain the money was a bribe, she didn’t feel guilty about relieving the politician of the funds.

Sheriff Jesse Cameron aimed for Texas when he stepped off the ship that brought him to America from Scotland. Good natured, Jesse is young for a sheriff. He arrived in town in the midst of a battle between the former sheriff and deputies against a group of robbers. He pitched in to help the sheriff. He is capable, well-respected, and viewed as firm but fair. When upset, his Scottish burr thickens his speech.

To learn what happens when a feisty pickpocket bride meets a strict sheriff as her groom, get your copy of JESSE AND THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Available as an e-book, a paperback, and enrolled in KU.

This book has mature situations and some domestic violence themes, though without graphic depiction, which may be considered triggers for some. However, it is also a story of rising from the ashes stronger. Reader discretion is advised.

SUMMERTIME!

By Caroline Clemmons

The song “Summertime” keeps playing in my head. I love the song, but I’m puzzled as to why the living is easy in summer. If you love the sun and hot weather, you’re in luck. As for me, I whine, “It’s hooottt” and remain indoors as much as possible. Here in North Central Texas, it is not as overwhelming as in some parts of the country. I pity construction workers, road crews, landscapers and others who have to work in these temperatures.

You probably know I’m fascinated by Ireland and the Irish. One of the groups from that culture that fascinates me is the Irish Travelers or Tinkers. The Travelers are an ancient group of minstrels who traveled from kingdom to kingdom back when Ireland was ruled by multiple kings or queens. They sang, juggled, performed acrobatics, and entertained the royalty.

When the English took over and booted many Irish tenants off their land with nowhere to turn, they were given help by and joined with the Travelers. They speak—in addition to English—a language called Shelta or Cant.

Irish Travelers are disliked—even hated—by many. Although often confused with them, they are not Romani gypsies, who originated in India and have their own religion. Travelers are originally Irish and are predominantly Catholic. Many of the children do not attend school, due in part to the mobile nature of the families. They have now crossed the ocean and colonized in the USA in several places. One is in White Settlement, a suburb of Fort Worth. Most live in mobile homes or RVs and travel around the country. You may have seen them featured on a television show about their lavish weddings dresses.

For Irish Travellers, the language you speak can have varying names according to the family to which you belong. Mincéir Thari can be called Shelta, Cant or De Gammon. It is an ancient indigenous language formed using the Ogham technique that gradually developed towards its present form under the pressure of contact with Irish and Hiberno-English. Mincéir means Traveller and Thari means talk, so this might be translated as ‘Traveller talk’. The closest living language is old Irish, which was spoken in Ireland pre 1200s. While the language is practiced mainly through oral tradition, with very little written history of it, the words for ‘priest’ and ‘God’ shown in old, pre-Christian documents in Ireland show shared lineation between the languages. The language is widely used today and the majority of people who speak it also speak English. There are different dialects of Irish Cant and in Ireland alone, there can be differences in words commonly spoken across the country and differences in spelling between people.

ARE YOU GOOD? Ar munya dil? /Ar munya hu?

WHAT NAME DID YOU TAKE? Munika Bug astúrt, lit?

I’M GOOD Mydil Tome/Munya

In 2017, Irish Travellers were recognized as a distinct ethnic group in Ireland, and recognized as Ireland’s only indigenous community.

The reason for my telling you about this is that the heroine in THE TEXAN’S IRISH BRIDE and her family travel with a group of Irish Travelers. THE TEXAN’S IRISH BRIDE is the first of five books in the popular McClintock series.

Here’s the book description:

Cenora Rose O’Neill knows her father somehow arranged the trap for Dallas, but she agrees to wed the handsome stranger. She’d do anything to protect her family, and she wants to save herself from the Irish Traveler bully, Tom Williams. A fine settled man like Dallas will rid himself of her soon enough, but at least she and her family will be safely away from Tom.

Texas rancher Dallas McClintock has no plans to wed for several years. Right now, he’s trying to establish himself as a successful horse breeder. Severely wounded rescuing Cenora from kidnappers, Dallas is taken to her family’s wagon to be tended. He is trapped into marrying Cenora, but he is not a man who goes back on his word. His wife has a silly superstition for everything, but passion-filled nights with her make up for everything—even when her wild, eccentric family drives him crazy.

I love the hero, Dallas, so much. He is such a good and generous man. I know you’ll love him, too, if you haven’t already read this book. You’ll find it at

Lord Stephen Cornwall is the most sot after Duke in England. His family heritage is also the most gossiped about with his mother being a Gypsy. On his morning escape from the world, Lord Cornwall finds a little morsel dismounting in a most unladylike manner. This, for sure, is when he lost his heart and now he must prove his love and save Lady Hastings from the man that is after her family's riches.

Lady Lisa Hastings has become a spoiled little brat that has only been in the world of society's rules for a couple of years. It is her year of coming out into the adult world of society and she is determined to prove to her father that she can do this. Then she meets the beast in the park that steals her heart.

            CHAPTER 1

Standing there with her hands on her hips in that sassy little pose that she has developed so well in the last couple years, Lisa stares at Flora as if she is the one that is doing something wrong. “I cannot believe the thought of telling on me now should even be entering your mind.”

“Yes, my Lady I am, you cannot be out running around on that creature of yours without a guard when we are in the middle of London.” Flora announces trying to act just as defiant as her Lady.

“I am only going for a ride in the park,” Lisa moans as she throws her riding habit onto the bed. “Besides it is way too early in the day for anyone else to be out and about. So I am sure a guard is not needed. Now if you would please help me into this before others do start rising.”

“If I get in trouble for helping you do this again I will, I will sit and write every indiscretion I have ever kept a secret for you and give the list directly to your father.” Flora declares as she comes to Lisa and reluctantly begins helping her dress.

Knowing that Flora is doing nothing but threatening her because she does not know how to write Lisa quietly exclaims, “It’s a deal now if you could please speed this up before I run out of time.”

As soon as Lisa was completely outfitted, including one of her favorite hats of course, she was out the bedchamber door as if her sanity depended on this simple ride in the park. She took the stair steps two at a time and was out the back door of her father’s townhouse in but a moment. Looking around like a thief in the night Lisa made sure no one was around to catch her on her little escapade. Finding no one to stop her Lisa made her way to her beloved Luscious’ stable.

Luscious started to prance around as soon as he smelled who was in the stables. “Please stop, my love, you must keep still till we are out on our own.” Lisa whispered as she slid her tiny little hand down the side of his neck.  At the same time, she went up on her tippy toes so she could reach the harness on the hook next to the stall door. It took a bit of effort before it finally came down but as soon as it did Luscious had his head down ready for her to put it on. Then she grabbed the saddle she kept hidden in the back of the stall. This saddle was lighter than the others so she could put it on her horse with ease.

Lisa had been taught how to prepare her horse on her own by the stable hands at the castle not long after her father had given it to her. This was her escape from what she called her boring life at her father’s townhouse. It was not long before she had her horse ready and was starting for the stable door.

“My Lady, if you do not mind my asking, what you are doing?” Aaron, the stable boy, asks as he comes up behind Lisa wiping the sleep out of his eyes. “You should not be out here doing this on your own at this time in the morning.” Lisa about jumped out of her skin as soon as Aaron’s voice made it to her ears which made Luscious start to squirm and prance.

“I did not think you would be up Aaron,” Lisa declares as she proceeds in calming Luscious down, “and would appreciate it if you would not sneak up on me as if I am doing something wrong.”

“My Apology’s my Lady but I did not sneak up on you,” Aaron answers, “and I do believe that you are doing something wrong.”

“Well, I am not, so if you do not mind, I would like to be off.” Lisa says as she tries to lead her horse out of the stall.

“And just where do you think you are going, my Lady, if you do not mind me asking?” Aaron asks putting himself in her way.

“For a ride in the park,” Lisa says trying her hardest to wiggle her and her horse around him.

“I am sorry my Lady but this I cannot let you do alone.”

“I know, I know we are in London, and it is not safe. I have heard this a hundred times already and would prefer not to hear it again.” Lisa utters again trying to get around him.

“Your father finds out that I have let you out like this and I will be flogged for sure.” Aaron states.

“Not if he does not know, now be on your way like I was never here.” Lisa says again trying to wiggle her way around him.

“I have been with your father many years my Lady and am not going to lose my place here now for lying.” Aaron declares enthusiastically. “If you could wait but a moment, I could have a horse ready and come with you myself.”

Lisa turns to Luscious for a moment before turning her face back to Aaron with that, oh so innocent, look on it she says, “That would be fine, now if you could please help me on mine and I will wait for you beside the gate.

Thinking that he has won this battle Aaron helped Lisa into her saddle and was quickly off to retrieve his own horse. Aaron was but two steps away from her when Lisa throws her leg over her saddle and took off like a man on the run. “My Lady please stop you must wait for me.” Aaron yelled but got no reply. Seeing that she was in no way going to listen to him, Aaron took off like a bat out of hell to get a horse and catch up to her as quickly as possible, thinking to himself, ‘That girl is going to get me flogged this time for sure.’

Lisa let Luscious run like the wind through the empty streets loving the cold air on her face as she whipped around the street corners without anyone in the way. She has been to the park quit a few times in carriages with different family members, so she had no problem finding her way. As soon as she entered the park she felt as if she was free of all the binds that her new life kept around her suffocating her more and more every day. After letting her steed have a good run Lisa took him to the pond in the back area of the park.

Seeing no one else around Lisa decides to dismount off her horse and let him drink for a bit. She finds a boulder big enough for her to use to dismount. Dismounting from her horse onto the rock and then to the ground in the same improper way she would at one of her father's castles. Lisa gets caught off guard and almost falls to the ground when she hears a voice sounding as stern as a general bellowing an order, to his own horse behind her.

Grabbing ahold of the rock to steady herself she turns to find out just who has the nerve to interrupt her morning absolution. Lisa gets the sun in her eyes and the silhouette of what looks like a statue of a creek God sitting on a massive beast.

“So, if you don't mind me asking young Lady, is this how the ladies of society dismount these days?” Stephen asks staring down at the most beautiful thing he has ever seen.

“It is none of your business how I dismount my horse. Is so rudely sneaking up on women how you always approach them?” Lisa asks sharply as she puts her hand up over her eyes trying to see the arrogant man that has invaded her morning ride could be.

“Oh no my dear it is so much more enjoyable to watch the wanting develop on a woman's face when they know I am coming in their direction.” Stephen says as he dismounts from his beast of a horse and starts to come around and stand directly in front of her but before his body could block the sun for her to see him Aaron came up behind them making Lisa turnaround to see who else was going to destroy her outing.
