RELEASE DAY FOR MAIL-ORDER VICTORIA

Release day is here for MAIL-ORDER VICTORIA, Widows, Brides, and Secret Babies book 7. I hope you will read and enjoy Victoria’s story. In my opinion, she’s a lovely person who is determined to give her daughter a good life. Greg Hardy is a good man who wants to protect his children and his ranch. However, they have different ideas of how to accomplish their goal.

You can find this at the Universal Amazon link https://mybook.to/Victoria

If you prefer to order via the U.S. Amazon link, it’s https://www.amazon.com/Victoria-Widows-Brides-Secret-Babies-ebook/dp/B086DFCDRB

Here’s the summary:

She has to protect her baby . . .
He is desperate for help . . .
Trouble preys on their livelihood . . .

Widow Victoria Bailey is desperate to prevent her in-laws from gaining custody of her eighteen-month-old daughter. If becoming a mail-order bride is her only option, she’ll take the risk. At least on a Texas ranch she’ll have quiet and peace. She doesn’t have time to let the groom know she’s bringing her daughter. Surely no man can object to one perfect little girl.

Widower Greg Hardy is desperate to get help with his home and his children. He needs to be pursuing whoever is rustling his cattle. A mail-order bride seems to be exactly what he needs but should he keep his children a secret? To insure he doesn’t scare off a prospective wife, he omits the fact that he has five children aged from eight months to twelve years old.

Their marriage starts with misunderstanding. They decide to work together to fight against a common foe. Will the fight take a toll on their fragile happiness?

And here’s an excerpt of Victoria preparing for a bad storm when her new husband and his ranch hands are off chasing rustlers:

The excited whinnies of horses captured Victoria’s attention. She went to the window to see if someone was outside. Instead, she saw the dark cloud bank approaching. She raced to Cindy’s room.
“There’s a bad storm coming. The clouds look as if they contain hail or worse. Please watch the children while I put up the chickens and try to get the horses into the barn.”
The girl laid aside her book. “I can take care of the chickens. Sid can watch the other children.”
She laid a hand on the girl’s shoulder. “Cindy, if this is a really bad storm and it hits while I’m outside, you’ll need to get the babies and Martha into the cellar. You’re the only one besides me who can manage that. I know I can depend on you. Frankie can get down the steps on his own with you watching. I’ll take Sid with me.”
She slipped into the boys’ room and saw that Sid was awake. “Come with me quickly, please.”
“What’s wrong?” He shoved his feet into his boots and followed her.
She hurried down the hall. “There’s a storm coming that might have hail in it and I’d hate for the hens to be injured or so frightened they quit laying eggs. I’ll get the horses into the barn if I can.”
Sid kept up with her. “The other horses will follow better if you bring in the bay stallion. He’s the leader.”
Wind blew in gusts, whipping up dust from the yard and molding her skirts against her. Greenish tinted air carried a heavy scent of moisture. She didn’t know about Texas weather, but in Atlanta these conditions meant one devil of a storm was on the way.
“I’ll get the horses while you get the hens. Can you do that?”
The boy hurried as they raced across the yard. “I’ve done it before.”
Victoria had ridden since she was eight but she’d never handled a frightened horse. She opened the barn door to the paddock and tried to whistle. Failing that, she turned and hunted a container. Using a bucket filled with oats, she cajoled the bay into the barn.
As Sid predicted, some of the other horses followed. There weren’t enough stalls for all the animals. To keep those she’d lured into the barn from leaving, she penned them by moving hay bales and barrels into their path. Both dogs were upset but fortunately wanted to remain inside the barn.
She ran out to the paddock and slapped a horse on the rump. Using the apron she’d removed, she shooed the stragglers toward the barn. Sid appeared and helped. He removed his shirt and waved it to drive the horses
The wind increased and pushed at her. Sid appeared to have trouble staying upright and the wind whipped his shirt from his hands. The airborne shirt caught on the fence and he grabbed it.
Thunder rumbled and lightning shot across the sky not far in the distance. The storm moved rapidly their way. Soon it would be directly over them.
She and the boy got the horses inside and shut the barn door. She was breathless and rested her back against the door briefly. Would Greg and his ranch hands be all right?
“The milk cows are safe in here. What about the pigs? What does your father do to protect them?”
He buttoned his shirt. “We don’t do anything. They’re smart enough to go into the covered part of their sty. It’s like a small barn.”
Raindrops fell outside—large ones. Or was it hail? They couldn’t delay.
She put her arm around the boy’s shoulder. “We have to get to the house and into the cellar. Let’s hurry. When I open the barn door, you run for the house and go straight to the cellar. If Cindy doesn’t have the others there tell her to get them there now. I’ll secure the barn and be right behind you.”
Had water been given the animals? Feed to the milk cows and chickens? They were safe and she didn’t dare delay any longer. Deafening thunder rumbled overhead. Dark clouds released a downpour. By the time she reached the porch’s shelter, she was drenched.

MAIL-ORDER VICTORIA is part of a multi-author project (MAP) but is stand-alone. Being involved in these projects with several other authors is good for me. It takes me back to working for a newspaper when I was given an assignment and told how long to make it and the deadline. Although for a MAP I’m given parameters by the series creator, I get to write what I want within those guidelines.

I hope you’ll give MAIL-ORDER VICTORIA a chance and will enjoy it. I love writing and will continue as long as readers enjoy my work.

The Errant Heirs Caper
The J.D. Pierson Mystery Series Book 1
by
C.H. Sessums
Genre: Cozy Mystery

At a dime a dozen, I’m going broke handing out excuses for my dad.

The name on the door says “JD Pierson, Investigator,” but most days the chair behind his desk is empty. It’s 1936 and times are hard for everyone in Tyler, Texas, but it’s all I can do to keep the rent paid since Dad lost his way in a bottle of gin.

When JD suddenly shows a moment of sober coherence, I whisk him off to his favorite fishing lake in the hopes I can keep him off the sauce. I wanted Dad back in the investigator game, but having an old friend turn up dead was not part of the plan.

But when a swarm of heirs swoops in we’re left wondering if his death really was an accident, or if murder is how one of them means to cash in.

**only .99 cents!**

The Killer Jack Mystery
The J.D. Pierson Mystery Series Book 2

A trip to state prison puts Jenny on the trail for a stolen necklace and right into the path of a killer…

The lights are just about to go out for good in my father's PI office when I get an unexpected call from the state penitentiary. My mother's only brother was sent up for robbery years ago, and now he needs Dad's help to get his daughter out of trouble. It's impossible for me to be sure that the pendant around Cousin Betty's neck is stolen, but one thing's for sure—she doesn't want to talk about where it came from. When my cousin gets gunned down walking home and the necklace disappears, I realize I'm not only looking for a thief . . . I'm dealing with a murderer.

Can I track down the identity of a man named Jack in time, or will he disappear into the shadows, only to kill again?

The Case of the Texas Ranger
The J.D. Pierson Mystery Series Book 3

A Texas Ranger—a virtual relic from the past–walks into a bar… but it isn't funny when he gets shot down on the street the moment he walks out…

Just like the doctors warned, Dad has made lots of promises about staying off the bottle. That doesn't stop me from being disappointed to find him at the local speakeasy one night. The leathery, stout man at his table looks vaguely familiar, and I'm only a little surprised to find out he's Templeton Gorham, former Texas Ranger. The governor shut down the Rangers years ago, but before that, Templeton was virtually a legend in his profession. He and JD are laughing over drinks like old friends, but later, when the three of us walk out into the night, gunshots pierce the darkness. Templeton is left lying in a pool of blood, and I'm left with a brand-new case on my hands.

When the victim won't speak, can I find the answers to keep a killer from finishing the job he started?

Guest Post: What Day Is It Anyway?

In about 2009 my husband, a museum director and history professor, decided to retire and we moved up to East Texas. Everyone talks about adjustment periods and there definitely were some for him and by extension, for me. He’d worked hard all of his life and the habit was difficult to break. But he found lots of hobbies and things to keep him busy and occasionally when he just needs a new project, he’ll volunteer at a local museum or historical society.

Now one thing we hadn’t anticipated about retirement was how hard it would be for him to keep up with the days. When one doesn’t go into a job daily, it's hard to know what day of the week it is. And since I’ve been hearing that a lot from folks during the current COVID-19 quarantines, I thought I’d share the simple and possibly strange way we managed to resolve that.

Now in our household breakfast is always a special meal. We love breakfast foods and we always like to start the day with a good, full bell. It wasn’t intentional, but gradually we developed a routine that began to become the hubby’s means for telling what day of the week it is. If we deviate, even the slightest, it confused the heck out of the both of us, not to mention our furbabies who seem to expect the routine almost as much as we do!

So check out our weekly breakfast schedule here. The only time we ever change things up is on Fridays when the hubby comes “to town” with me. Every few weeks we give ourselves a special treat by grabbing hot, fresh chocolate donuts.

So, for those of you who’ve been cooped up in the house during this crisis, have you developed a way to keep track of the days of the week? What about breakfast. Do you enjoy the first meal of the day? Leave a comment and let me know.

“Because it’s fun! Imagination can be a lot more interesting than what happens in real life to so-called ‘normal’ people. I love my characters, and my goal is to make the readers love them also. To be concerned about what happens to them while the tale unfolds. If I can steal my booklover’s attention away from their everyday grind, absorb them in a fictional world, and make them care about the ending, then I’ve done my job.”

NEVER KISS A STRANGER -- ROMANTIC COMEDY

Don't miss the Rafflecopter Giveaway at the end of the post!

Never Kiss a Stranger
by
Logan Chance
Genre: Romantic Comedy

Kiki

Ellis Atwood is the devil. Ok, maybe that’s too harsh. Ellis Atwood is ruining my life.
First, he demolishes a perfectly good wedding trellis.
Second, he destroys a gorgeous doggie wedding that I spent ages planning. (I kid you not.)
Third, he makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, and that is not ok. I prefer the cold and harsh way my fiancé makes me feel so much better. (wait, that didn’t come out right.)
Fourth, and there is a fourth, he gets me all wound up and flustered.
And last, when he unexpectedly kissed me it made me forget my own name, or the fact that I’m getting married...in a month.
Please someone help me out. I’m a mess.
Worst part is, Ellis isn’t the bad guy I first thought he was.
And being forced to spend time with him is making me realize that
he needs my help more than anything.
So what’s a girl like me to do?

Ellis

I’m only in town long enough to figure out a plan with my brother on how to save our brewery from the awfulness that is my father. Oh and be in a wedding.
Where I may or may not be crushing a little too hard on the bride-to-be.
(spoiler alert, I'm crushing hard.) She’s really cute. Like seriously.
And she has the cutest job, she’s a dog wedding planner. (I kid you not.)
I can see why Henry loves her.
I can see why everyone loves her.
I can see why I’m falling for her.
I’m usually not a relationship-type guy. Call it picky or whatnot, but usually I get bored easily. So, my plan is simple. Spend as much time with Kiki (soon to be Faniki, I know) and hopefully get bored with her adorkable smile and sexy legs that go on for miles.
Then, I can save the brewery, be the best man of the wedding, and get my butt back to Chicago and away from the happy couple.

Book Trailer

Have you ever had a goat walk all over your butt? I’m serious here. And somehow, I’m supposed to stay in a zen state as a baby goat tramples his little hooves all over my body?

My best friend, Lola, has had some nutty ideas in her life. ‘It’s all in the sake of a healthier lifestyle,’ she says.

Once, she had us paddleboarding. Which yes, nothing out of the ordinary. But, instead of starting in a lake, or in the intracoastal, she had us start on the beach.

It took us about thirty minutes just to paddle past each breaking wave. We had a little section of people on the beach cheering us on. I’m sure they just liked watching us wipeout.

Talk about a workout. I was so exhausted from fighting the waves I couldn’t go on any further.
Another time she thought it would be fun to head down to Miami and walk from South Beach to downtown. Which we did, but I wished I’d known ahead of time that was the plan. I thought we were heading south to party, because that is usually what one does in Miami. But, I wouldn’t have worn my favorite black heels.

Sure there’s wanting to be adventurous, but there’s a fine line between adventure and just plain silly.
And maybe this is it.

I’m not actually complaining because I’ve never been part of a routine where it has not benefited me greatly, but I just don’t quite understand bending yourself into the shape of a pretzel and then thinking, you know what this also needs? GOATS. Lots of little goats jumping all over us.
Yoga with Goats. Goga? Goga on. Super creative title. I know. You’re welcome.

Point is, Lola thinks it’s fun to try new things, and well Poppi and I should probably have our heads examined because we go along with whatever hairbrained plan she has.

I like to say we’ve gotten smarter, but this ...this right now...is insane.

“I’m pretty sure this goat just got to third base,” I whisper to Lola, trying to keep my yoga pose in check.

This is supposed to be a serene space. It’s got all the elements to make a person relax. Soft music. Beige walls. Hardwood flooring with blue yoga mats spaced equally around the place. Even the yoga teacher is the epitome of tranquility. Her name is Flower, I kid you not, and she has her hair piled into a wicked knot on the top of her head. Other yogis would be jealous.

“Close your eyes and work through the movements,” Flower purrs at the front of the class. “Now move into downward dog pose. Remember to make sure you don’t lose your goat.” Flower gives a sideways glance at Poppi. Her goat took off long ago and is now across the room eating a potted plant.

I stare at my goat, his big brown eyes stare back. “Please stay with me little guy,” I whisper as I move my body into downward facing dog while the goat balances perfectly on my ass. You could say my goat and I have gotten pretty close.

“Now move into crab pose. Keep your goat steady.”

Sweat trickles down from my forehead as I glance at the teacher who glides into the pose with ease, her goat looking like he’s riding out the perfect wave. “Are you going to get your goat?” I ask Poppi.

Her mouth drops open as she scans the room, locating her goat. “Nah, he seems pretty happy over there.” She waves a hand, and then focuses her attention back on me. “Also, I still can’t believe you’re engaged, Kiki.”

I bite my lip, trying my best to keep my inner yogi at peace. “It’s not too soon is it?”

Poppi’s elbows hit the mat as she stops posing. “No, it’s like a dream come true. Henry’s perfect.”
I smile. “He is perfect, right?” I still can’t believe I’m getting married. Me. Kiki Kingsley is engaged.
And Henry really is just soooooo perfect.

Even the way he proposed was perfection. We’d only been dating a month, and he took me out to La Pearl. It’s the type of place where you have to call months and months in advance to get into. I’d always wanted to go. I was ecstatic that he asked me, and I remember spending hours finding the perfect dress. It was a hot little red number with matching shoes.

And then it happened.

It was a little cliche, but still so romantic.

He ordered champagne to the table, and there was an engagement ring in the glass. Shock doesn’t even cover the expression I wore on my face.

When I glanced over to him, he was on one knee, asking me to be Mrs. Henry Faniki. I never even knew his last name, and I was saying yes over and over before I had the chance to put the two together. Kiki Faniki. Yes, my name will rhyme.

“Just the name,” I breathe out, keeping my pose and goat stable.

“Kiki Faniki, the first woman on Mars. See it sounds more prestigious when you put it doing something important,” Lola says.

“Breathe,” Flower huffs, staring in our direction, obviously not very happy with us. “And no talking.”

“But, I’ll never go to Mars,” I whisper back.

“You never know that.”

“I think that’s one thing I can say for certain. Ugh, I can’t have a rhyming name.”

“Don’t take his last name,” Poppi offers.

I shake my head. “No, I’ve always dreamed of taking the last name of my husband.” I close my eyes, trying to find my center of gravity as the baby goat I’ve named Peter tries his best to stay on. He’s kind of cute. All black fur with big brown eyes. He almost…no, I can’t say that. I can’t even think it.

But as the little goat stares back at me with his little triangular beard and big brown eyes, I can’t help thinking he looks a lot like Henry.

“Oh my god, my goat looks just like Henry,” I say to my friends.

Poppi laughs. “It’s just because you’re so in love. You’re seeing him everywhere you look.”

“So romantic,” Lola coos.

“It’s romantic that my fiance looks like a goat?”

“Girls, please,” Flower scoffs while moving into another pose, her body as bendy as Gumby.

We mimic her movements, trying not to laugh. I glance at my ring, the rock Henry proposed with. It shines and sparkles in all the right ways. I still can’t believe this is my life.

He told me he’d never met anyone like me before, and that he knew it was sudden, but he couldn’t stand living another day without me being his wife.

I about died of swoon fever (it’s a real condition, look it up) when he put the two-carat princess cut ring on my finger. I smile to myself, remembering back to the way his brown eyes centered on mine when he told me his five-year plan.

He said, “Marriage. Bang. Kids. Bang. Everything will fall into place with the perfect woman by my side. Then, I’ll make partner. Bang.’’

Me. The perfect woman.

We went home that night and made passionate love. Well, we would have, but Henry had had a bit too much champagne celebrating and passed out before the actual event of it all. But, it was still a perfect night.

“And just think, now you get to plan your own wedding,” Poppi says, getting back into the pose like Twisty-Curvy upfront who watches us with her evil eye.

Every girl has fantasized about their dream wedding since they were a little girl. And I am no exception to this rule. I want it to be right on the beach. I even know the spot, by the turtle sanctuary on Juno Beach where there’s a tunnel that leads from the parking lot, to the sand. You can’t be from Florida and not want a beach wedding. And yes, I want to walk out of the tunnel like walking down an aisle. I can almost see it. I close my eyes with a smile on my face as I try to picture it all with Henry.

“This goat is infatuated with my left boob,” Lola says, bringing me back to reality.

I pop open my eyes and try not to laugh as Lola tries to keep a crab pose steady as her own baby goat gnaws at her tank top.

“He thinks you’re his mother,” Poppi says as Flower gives her a nasty look. Poppi just glares right back at her.

“Well, I’m not.” Lola glances at the front of the class, trying to get the instructor’s attention, hoping she’ll stop class once she sees Lola’s goat sexually assaulting her.

And then it’s like everything takes a turn for the worse. As if the whole world explodes into slow motion. Poppi’s wandering goat tries to mount the Flower, and I try my best to stifle my laughter as she loses control and comes crashing down to her mat. “Will you please come get your goat,” she yells at Poppi.

Poppi stands and heads to the front of the class as quickly as she can.

I stop posing and hold Peter close to me.

But Lola has completely lost control of her animal, and he kicks his heels together and jumps off her. He’s been spooked and rushes to the front of the class, knocking over Flower and her goat.
It’s seriously like goats gone wild in here.

A few of the other goats trample around, trying to knock everyone and everything over in their path.
Peter bucks against my arms, and I can no longer hold him back.

And then the unimaginable happens. As if goats going crazy in a yoga studio isn’t bad enough, my engagement ring knocks loose, and Peter swallows it as I let out a howl.

“Noooooo. My goat ate my ring.” My squeals halt all the activity and everyone stands still, watching Peter with his little innocent face.

I can’t believe this is happening.

“Wow, goat yoga is intense,” Poppi says under her breath as the Flower looks like she could breathe out fire at any moment.

I think it goes without saying we all get kicked out. But, not until I’ve been assured by the farmer of the goats that we just have to wait a few days before I can get my ring back. Yes, you guessed it. I have to wait for a goat to poop out my engagement ring. I hope this isn’t an omen as to how my marriage will go.

Lexxie Couper
Genre: Contemporary Romance

It was all background noise, until he made her stop and listen.

Chase is tough, snarky, witty and fiercely loyal to her family. She is also hearing impaired, which makes the world around her sound like white noise a lot of the time. But that’s okay, she can deal. It’s not like she’s actually deaf, and she’s learned to lip read…when it suits her.

What she can’t deal with is guys like Caden, who think their looks and charm will win her over. They won’t because Chase has zero interest in pursuing a relationship with someone who’s leaving the country soon. What would be the point?

Well, there is the fun they have together. The way Caden shows he cares about things greater than himself, like abandoned dogs. There’s his smile, his eyes and his wicked sense of humor.

In fact, if Chase ever admitted it to herself, she might say Caden is just about perfect.

But how could a perfect guy possibly ever want someone who isn’t?

Excerpt of UNCONDITIONAL

Searching frantically for the restroom sign, I spied what I thought was the ladies’ room and ran for it, head down, fist gripping the strap of my bag as if it were a lifeline to bladder relief.

So of course, when I slammed into something rock-solid but warm and firm as well, the first thing I thought was I was going to pee myself. Not, argh, I’ve just run into someone and I need to apologize.

I stumbled back a step, flinging the poor woman in my way a harried glance. And froze when that harried glance found not a poor woman, but a tall, broad-shouldered, stunningly hot—no, change that—stupefyingly hot, gorgeous guy with shaggy dark-brown hair hanging over equally dark-brown eyes so intense and beautiful and sexy and—

He wrapped strong fingers around my upper arms and steadied me before I could fall completely on my ass.

“Hey, I think you’re heading into the wrong loo.”

I gazed up at him and didn’t say a word. I’d’ve liked to have blamed sleep deprivation and jet lag for my ridiculous silence, but they weren’t the culprits.

The guy holding my arms, keeping me upright, was stunning. Gorgeous. Hot. Like a brown-haired, brown-eyed version of Chris Hemsworth. Only sexier.

I didn’t think that was even possible, but there you go. Tall, with a crooked grin that made my heart skip a beat and a goddamn divine body, all muscular and sculpted and perfectly proportioned with the broadest of shoulders, all wrapped up tight in a snug white T-shirt and snugger faded jeans.

And he had an Australian accent.

Oh boy.

I gaped at him, my heart thumping in my throat.

“Can you speak?” he asked.

I caught my bottom lip with my teeth and shook my head.

His eyebrows shot up. “You can’t?”

“I can,” I blurted, nodding this time. Talk about being a mess of contradictions. “I’m just …” I paused, stopping myself from telling him I was falling in lust with him. Yeah, not exactly cool behavior. Gushing all over a complete stranger on the way to the bathroom? Welcome to Australia.
“I’m just … desperate,” I finished, ducking my head. I sounded like an idiot.

He gave a warm, friendly laugh. “To go to the loo?”

I peered up at him through my bangs. “Yeah.”

That crooked grin returned to his face. As before, it made my body do things I wasn’t entirely used to.

“You better go then.” He stepped aside and held an arm out, directing me deeper into the men’s restroom.

Oh my God, was I blushing? I shuffled my feet, frowning.

Devilment danced in his dark-brown eyes. “Something else you’re desperate for?”

Something else? Was he serious? A guy that looked like him, asking me what I wanted? If I were the brave, take-no-prisoners kind of girl, I’d tell him straight up. Something else I’m desperate for? Hell yeah, a kiss from you would be a start. But I wasn’t that kind of girl. I was a sleep deprived, jet lagged student with poor social skills and a disease that wasn’t exactly high on the sexy list. Of course, I wasn’t going to ask him for a kiss.

No matter how much the thought made my tummy flutter.

He studied me with a playful grin. “Going to tell me what it is?”

“A kiss.” The word fell past my lips before I could stop it.

My face went cold as the blood drained from it. And then hot as all that blood rushed back into my cheeks just as fast. Holy shit, had I really said that aloud?

“A kiss?” he repeated, lifting an eyebrow.

Oh God, I had said it aloud. I stared at him, once again dumbstruck. What was I doing? Was I really that tired? Had to be. Why else would I say something so … so … embarrassing? I couldn’t be flirting with him. I wasn’t any good at it. I was an environmentalist dork with Parkinson’s. As if I knew how to flirt.

Was I delusional? Was my brain finally betraying me compl—

Warm lips brushed over mine in a lingering caress of skin on skin. I would have melted on the spot … if it wasn’t for the fact I yelped in shocked disbelief and stumbled back a step.

Mr. Broad Shoulders laughed. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to freak you out.”

Just to make it clear before I continue, I’m not a virgin. I lost my virginity four nights after my sixteenth birthday, to my high school boyfriend—the quarterback, no less. How’s that for both an achievement and a cliché? But since I found out I have Parkinson’s, I’ve pretty much shut down any and all notion of romance. Who wants to get romantic with someone who’s going to be a shaky mess in a few years? I can’t imagine there are many guys out there willing to roll with that kind of burden, so I stopped putting myself out there. Which might explain my very active fantasy obsession with a married Australian actor, now that I think about it. Hmmm. Desire the impossible to substitute the denied. Makes sense, right?

I gaped up at my mysterious kisser—again. Heart beating way too fast, I pressed my fingers to my lips. “Why did you do that?”

“You asked.” His grin turned wickedly playful, hinting at a dimple in his right cheek, and he leaned a little closer to me, his brown eyes holding mine. “And you looked so damn sexy with your mussed-up hair and coffee-stained shirt.”

HEALING HEARTS

Healing Hearts
by
C.B. Clark
Genre:
Western Romantic Suspense

Reeling from loss and heartbreak, Stella King is desperate to escape painful
memories. The position of nanny on an isolated ranch in British
Columbia's rugged Chilcotin Plateau seems the answer to her prayers.

Cattle rancher, Dawson Wheeler, has worked hard to overcome grief and build
a predictable world for his young daughter. The last thing he needs
is the all-too-attractive Stella disrupting the smooth running of his
ranch, especially now that disturbing incidents are happening on his property.

Defending his land against those who want to gut it will be a challenge, but
the biggest threat of all may be to his heart.

Damn it! He should be home in bed instead of driving on this godforsaken, sorry excuse for a road in the middle of the night.

A dark shape darted out of the thick bank of pine trees and sprang onto the road. A pair of eyes glowed in the glare of his approaching headlights.

He cranked hard on the steering wheel, avoiding the deer by inches.

The animal, white tail flashing like a flag, bounded into the ditch and vanished into the forest.
Dawson Wheeler released a breath he hadn’t been aware he was holding and eased his foot off the accelerator. Crashing into a deer or moose wouldn’t make this day any better. He rolled down his window and inhaled the sweet-smelling, rain-washed air. The sky had cleared after the morning’s rain shower, and a thin sliver of moon cast a faint glow over the dark wilderness, the trees silhouetted against the velvety sky. In the distance, a dusting of fresh snow glimmered on the jagged peaks of the Coastal Mountains.

Why had he agreed to this crazy idea? He had enough to do at the ranch without having to babysit some pampered know-it-all, especially with that damn mine business hanging over his head.

He slowed as he approached Spirit Falls. The bus stop was nothing but a widening of the road with an old wooden bench set amidst weeds and wildflowers. Glancing at his wristwatch, he grimaced. Mack Hicken, the cantankerous old bus driver who’d driven the route between Hosten and Spirit Falls for what seemed like forever, prided himself on keeping to his schedule in spite of flat tires, knee-deep snowdrifts, and mud-filled ruts.

The bus would have dropped any passengers off an hour ago, but not a single man-made light broke the darkness. The rain and accompanying high winds had delayed Dawson, but the person he was there to pick up should still be waiting. Where would she go? It wasn’t as if a coffee shop was open down the road, or that she could catch a ride in a passing vehicle.

Traffic was sparse on the old logging road at this time of night. Spirit Falls’ heyday had fizzled with the bust in the lumber market, and most folk had moved on long ago. The town consisted of a few boarded-up buildings and a broken gas pump. Jim Svenson ran a small general store for locals, but Jim’s daughter had just had twins, and the proud grandpa had taken an extended vacation to Hosten to meet his new grandsons.

The woman Dawson had come more than a hundred kilometers to pick up must have taken one glance at the desolate emptiness of Spirit Falls and refused to get off the bus. She was probably on her way back to the bright lights of Hosten right now. If she’d bailed, that meant he was off the hook.

Smiling for the first time that day, he pressed down on the gas pedal and sped away from the bus stop. A flicker of white on the shoulder ahead caught his eye, and he slammed on the brakes. The truck skidded to a stop, his seatbelt digging into his shoulder. Catching his breath, he peered through the mud-spattered windshield.

A woman sat perched atop an oversized suitcase. Long, wavy strands of golden hair glowed in the sweep of light cast by his headlights and formed a halo around a face that wouldn’t be out of place on the cover of a fashion magazine. Her full lips lifted in a tentative smile, and she waved.

He frowned and tugged the photograph of the woman he was supposed to meet from his coat pocket and squinted in the glow of the dash lights. The lined, grandmotherly face beamed at him. He glanced at the gorgeous blonde watching him from the roadside. A sinking feeling settled deep in his gut. He removed his cowboy hat, ran his fingers through his hair, and tossed the hat onto the passenger seat.

Maybe she was waiting for someone else.

Maybe.
