THE FOOL'S JOURNEY . . .

Debra Doggett
Please welcome Debra Doggett, who has been writing since childhood. Keeping stories in her head while raising three daughters, pursuing her BA in History and working as a museum professional has kept the writer inside her alive. She has also written, performed and directed for the stage, her second love. A bit of a wanderer, these days she resides in New Mexico and let's the desert inspire her. She has also recently been named Co-Editor at 69 Flavors of Paranoia. Here’s Debra:

The Fool’s Journey…

There are days I feel I should probably be locked up in a padded room for doing this whole writer thing. And there are days I can tell my children feel they may have to step in and do just that with me one day. Most of the time I can cover it, but there are days when the voices in my head can be a bit demanding and there is the occasional diva among them that makes me wonder if I should keep her as my heroine’s best friend or kill her off in a particularly gruesome way.

The fact that I sometimes find myself standing in the grocery line contemplating murder and mayhem makes me feel a bit disconnected from the “real” world. And that to me is the bottom line of being a writer – choosing to step out of reality and into a primordial realm just waiting for you to be its creator. It takes a certain amount of concentration (and a good ability to BS) to remember to smile and nod at appropriate times when your mind is off figuring out how the third planet in the Adeanan system is going to survive the assault by the High Council and just how much sex is enough to keep the tension high between your hero and heroine. And it takes forgiving friends and a really understanding boss to continue keeping one foot in each realm.

So I’ve taken a risk that may help maintain my sanity and keep me out of the padded room for a bit longer. I stepped away from a demanding job to focus my attention on the stories still swirling in my head. I want them to see the light of day and to make someone else relax and enjoy them with me. This is definitely my Fool’s Journey, my jump off the cliff that hopefully will end with me flying and not crashing.

It’s a journey I don’t want to take alone. My hope is there are other fools out there who’d like to ride along. The world used to have its risk-takers, those who were willing to see beyond the box of reality into the wide open spaces of fantasy and innovation. We owe it to them to see that the world doesn’t become too comfortable with the status quo and to make sure they realize that the Adeanan system just might be out there somewhere, waiting for us to discover it because we were roaming around the universe looking for it. So who’s up for a little space travel?

Here's the blurb for GAMBLER'S MOON:

Vampire Gates McHenry has waited eighty years for a chance at sexy shapeshifter Ava Harper. When she shows up at his bar with a wolf trap and a nasty attitude, he knows the time has come to deal himself into the game. And the stakes for this game are higher than any he’s ever faced before because someone or something has taken an interest in Ava as well. A deadly interest. If he can find the threat and keep Ava from staking him in the process, he just might be able to make the move that will win Ava Harper’s heart.

Here's the blurb for THE PRIZE:
Stellan was the last thing Cardis expected to deal with when she fled her home on Adena to avoid another unwanted challenge. Safely stowed away on her father's freighter, she thought she'd escaped those who wished to invoke Adena's ancient tradition of the Virgin Challenge and attempt to win her in marriage. Now she finds herself in the hands of the most unlikely challenger of all. And in spite of all her resolve never to be trapped into marriage, trying to keep herself from melting when Stellan's hands touch her may be the hardest challenge Cardis has ever faced.

Hey Deb! I know exactly what you mean... I need a padded cell too. I might get more writing done, if I
had one. Looking forward to reading many more of your books!!

Debra, thank you for this post. I absolutely understand - and I love the part about taking the risk. Yes, there are more risk-takers out there (including yours truly), and although taking the plunge may be scary, it's also extremely rewarding. Happy writing!

Hi, Debra. Thanks for this enlightening (and entertaining) post. Yep, there are more fools--I mean kindred spirits out there than we know sometimes, huh? ;) It's quite a journey though. Good luck on yours, and with your books!
