Love
On the Line 2
Women
at Work Book 1
by
Kirsten Fullmer
Genre:
Women's Fiction, Romance
In
part two of this extraordinary love story set in the hot, humid,
summer of the wide-open mid-west, egos and emotions collide. Andyand
Rooster find their romance in peril when job-related stress,
injuries, and extraordinary weather conditions interfere with their
relationship, both at work and at home.
Andrea
has come to understand working outdoors in inhospitable climates and
is thriving in her role as assistant bending engineer. She and
Rooster have moved in together and are starting a new job. Although
exhausted, Andy is glad to be working with Grandpa Buck again, even
though it limits her time with Rooster. She’s missed the other
hands too, and she is very curious about the new coating foreman; an
intelligent, confident, and independent young woman. So is her
friend, Nick. Andy also finds herself befriending a neighbor at the
RV park, the wife of a welder on the line. Seeing a girl her age as a
mother has Andy wondering about her own future. Could she manage to
pipeline and be wife and mother too?
As
always, pipeline construction is interrupted by delays, fraught with
fatigue, and contingent on the weather. Caught up in a world of egos,
Andrea and Rooster struggle to maintain their workload while finding
time for each other after hours. When a serious on-the-job accident
tips the scale of leadership, Andy and Rooster are thrown into
conflicting positions. If stress at work, little time for love, and
their reputations in danger wasn’t enough, Andy’s parents show up
to complicate things further. Rooster is determined to prove himself
capable of his new position, and Andrea isn’t about to let Buck
down; will their fledgling romance pay the price? The couple has
their horns locked in battle and they can’t let go, but they need
each other, especially now. Both will have to make sacrifices and
take a chance on ruining their credibility in order to stay together.
In this epic and unique love story set in the wild mountains of West Virginia, a young woman and her unlikely friends find their way through multiple job hazards and terrible working conditions to achieve the unexpected.
Andrea never thought she’d live in a camp trailer or work outdoors in inhospitable climates; but eager to leave the stress and tedium of grad-school behind, she sets off with her estranged grandpa, Buck, to build a pipeline through the rugged mountains of West Virginia. She’s determined to understand the man and the family divide that drove him away. Once the job starts, she forms an unlikely friendship with Nick, the rough and tumble foreman of the bending crew. Most of the guys aren’t willing to accept her, and Rooster, the handsome, cocky, tie-in foreman, is determined that she’s a ridiculous distraction.
But building a pipeline is fraught with danger, fatigue, and confrontation as egos collide. Caught up in the all-male social microcosm, Andrea can’t help but understand the pecking order, and she’s at the bottom. Being a woman makes it even more unlikely she’ll be accepted. Buck proves to be a taskmaster, but a kindhearted teddy-bear of a man under a gruff exterior, and Andrea comes to love him, opening herself up to the pain of his past.
Rooster and Andrea are drawn to each other, yet they know an on-the-job romance will only cause problems. Rooster is tormented by his own past, and determined to prove himself to Buck, a pipeline ledged. Messing with the old man’s granddaughter is a line Rooster refuses to cross. But as Andrea shows herself to be a hard worker and a valuable member of the crew, she earns Rooster’s respect and he can’t keep his distance. It seems the couple can’t go back, they can’t move forward, and they can’t let go. Both will have to make sacrifices and take a chance on ruining their credibility in order to be together.

THE SECRETS OF GABLE HOUSE
Can they unravel centuries-old secrets and set a spirit free?
Noah
Miller is shocked to learn that an unknown great uncle has named him heir to
the family fortune, including the residence known as Gable House. Built by
Noah’s fifth-back grandfather, the house is ripe with family secrets and
unusual occurrences.
Maggie
Shephard has spent the past ten years researching the history of
Willow-By-The-Sea, including that of her own ancestors. Considered an authority
on New England history, she’s often sought out as a consultant. When Noah
Miller asks for her help in acquainting him with both the house and his
ancestors, she jumps at the chance to share her knowledge with the handsome
architect.
Noah
and Maggie have an immediate attraction to one another, made even more so by
the time they spend together researching the Gable family history. The fact
that each Gable male died an untimely and gruesome death, leads Noah and Maggie
on a quest for the truth in hopes of setting a murderous spirit free.
Maggie Shephard raised her
head and scanned the dozen or so people spread out around the library’s common
area. Most were tourists, one or two were students from the nearby college, and
then there was...him. While the others wore faded jeans and sweatshirts, he was
dressed in a three-piece charcoal gray suit, likely costing more than her
student loan payments. His dark brown hair held a hint of silver at the temples,
the well-styled cut barely grazing the collar of his white dress shirt.
Totally out of place, he sat
at the back of the room, his gaze intense and laser-focused on her.
She dropped her attention to
her notes and back on her closing. “For those of you with questions, I’ll be
around for another hour or so. Thank you so much for joining me for today’s
presentation. Don’t forget to take a pamphlet from the back table as you exit
the library.”
Maggie gathered her papers and
then stepped down from the podium. When she looked up, he was there. “May I
help you?”
He stuck out his hand. “I’m
Noah Miller. Mr. Gallagher from Gallagher, Hastings, and West told me you were
the ranking expert on all things related to the area’s history.”
She forced a faint smile to
her lips, and placed her hand in his, immediately aware of the warmth his touch
generated. The almost instantaneous reaction left her both surprised and
intrigued.
“I’m flattered. Mr. Gallagher
called earlier to say you’d be stopping by. I hope you didn’t mind sitting
through the presentation.”
“No, I found it very
interesting, in fact.”
“Mr. Gallagher also mentioned
you are the new owner of Gable House.” When he nodded, she added, “I have to
tell you, when we heard there was an heir, we were shocked to say the least.”
He shot her a quizzical look.
“Why? Is the idea of my great uncle having family that surprising?”
“Truthfully? Yes. Your great
uncle was a recluse. The few in town, most of them now in their eighties or
nineties, who knew Henry Hastings in his younger years, don’t recall him ever
mentioning family of any sort.”
“He had a will, so surely
someone knew.”
She shrugged. “No doubt the
will was many years old. I don’t think Henry had left the house in over a
decade.”
“What about daily necessities?”
“The members of the historical
society took turns running his errands. He had a housekeeping service come in
every once in awhile. As a matter of fact, I believe it was one of their
employees who discovered...uh—”
He raised his hand,
interrupting her muddled explanation. “It’s okay. I’m aware of the
circumstances of his death.”
“I don’t think anyone was
surprised to hear he was gone,” she told him. “Especially given the history
surrounding Gable House.”
His eyebrows arched, giving
her a wider glimpse of his chocolate brown eyes, her comment obviously piquing
his interest.
“History? What history?”
“Surely your immediate family
has filled you in on some of the details.”
His expression hardened. His
otherwise very attractive features pinching into a deep frown. “I have no
immediate family, Miss...uh...”
“Shephard,” she filled in.
“Maggie Shephard.”
He gave a curt nod. “Yes, of
course. Gallagher gave me your name. Sorry. This whole situation has been a
revelation to say the least, and a weird one at that.”
“Have you been to the house
yet?” she asked.
“No. I have an appointment
with a realtor at three.” He paused, and then asked, “Would you be willing to
join me? I’d be happy to pay you for your time.”
“I don’t—”
“It would be nice to have an
historian’s perspective on the future of the property.”
She had to admit, she was
tempted, if only to see Noah Miller’s reaction to his great uncle’s home.
“Okay, I can spare some time.”
“Shall I pick you up here at
the library?” he asked.
Her first instinct was to
accept. After all, Noah Miller was an extremely handsome man. And a welcome
change from the locals she’d been fending off for years. However, he was also
an unknown, a stranger in a small town where everyone knew everyone else.
“I can meet you there. I also
live in Willow-By-The-Sea, within walking distance of your great uncle’s home.”
His rather docile expression
lifted into a half-smile. “Well, then, I truly am getting first-hand expertise.
A valuable commodity when you’re in unfamiliar territory.”

She wants a baby…he wants a family
Firefighter and paramedic Tierney Ashton has always been a bold adventurer, but at thirty-four she longs to embark on a new adventure—motherhood. But who will be the father? Although financially challenging, a sperm bank appears to be her best option. That is, until she shares her dream with her long-time pal, Brendan Flaherty.
Government analyst and world traveler Brendan Flaherty returns home to River’s Edge to help out at his family’s thriving winery and his brother’s new community theater. He also plans to finally achieve his lifelong goal of writing a novel. But when Tierney shares her wish, Bren offers to be her baby daddy—with one condition. Marriage.
It seems like a perfect contract, but will love get in the way?
Read an Excerpt
Three texts from Bren—he’d heard about the fire—wondering if she was okay. He was moving into his cabin; did she want to come up to the winery and help him celebrate. And, hey, it was almost midnight, where was she?
She smiled. Good old Brendan Flaherty. Her buddy had returned home from Washington, DC, nearly a year and a half ago. It was good to have him back in River’s Edge. He’d been her older brother, Mike’s, best friend since elementary school and had always treated her like his own little sister. He’d stepped right in as surrogate big brother when Mike died in Afghanistan fifteen years ago, and the two of them had helped each other through the grief. She treasured their friendship, especially now that Bren was home to stay.
Her eyes went to the photo on the mantle above the fireplace in the living room—Mike and Bren on their bikes with her sitting on Mike’s cross bar, his arm around her skinny form. The boys had been in seventh grade in the picture and at eight years old, Tierney had worshipped her older brother, although she’d always found his best buddy a little geeky. Actually, both Mike and Bren had been kind of nerdy—into computer games and science experiments and exploring the caves down by the Ohio River.
Bren was still geeky, but in the nicest way possible. He still made a point of looking after Tierney, even though at thirty-four, she was quite capable of taking care of herself. She went into the kitchen, refilled her coffee mug, and retrieved the box of marshmallow cereal from the pantry. Plopping back down at the table, she ate fingersful of dry cereal directly from the box while she texted Holly to let her know she’d be there at three and then Bren to reassure him that she was fine and would love to come out to the winery to celebrate his new digs.
