LADY LAW AND THE GUNSLINGER SERIES

Devil in Texas
Lady Law and the Gunslinger Series Book 1
by
Adrienne deWolfe
Genre:
Historical Romance

Pinkerton Agent Sadie Michelson
poses as a casino singer to investigate a Texas
Senator. Before she can cozy up to her quarry, she must get past his
bodyguard, William Cassidy, her long-lost lover.

An
outlaw seeking redemption, Cass was lured to Texas by the promise of
a Ranger badge. But he hasn’t forgotten the sassy siren, who toyed
with his heart. When Sadie proposes a truce, Cass suspects she’s
hiding something.

With
assassins dogging their heels, Cass and Sadie uncover a murder
conspiracy in the senate. To stay alive, they must do the one thing
they’re dead set against: trust each other.

Excerpt: DEVIL IN TEXAS
Book 1, Lady Law & the Gunslinger

As the other players left the table, Sadie sprawled man-like in her chair, doing her best to look drunk and stupid. God knew, she'd observed enough rednecks to know how to mimic one.

According to the bouncer, Cass was hunting for her in the crowd. Sadie wasn't surprised. In fact, she'd prepared. That's why she'd donned a dingy linen sack suit (which was the ugliest thing she'd ever worn); blue-tinted railroad spectacles (to turn her amber eyes a shade of green;) flesh-toned putty to hide the freckles on her nose, and auburn facial hair. Knowing Cass as she did, she figured she was due for a monumental showdown.

Her mind flashed back to a torrid night in Dodge, when she'd insisted she was a business woman who would never give her heart to any man. He'd taken offense at the idea. When she'd refused to make an exception, even for him, he'd used his lariat to bind her to the posts of her bed. She could still hear his provocative drawl above her ripping breaths as he'd tantalized her feverish, sensitized nakedness.
A lusty smile curved her lips.

'Stop that!' her ever-practical brain railed at her nether region. What the Rebel Rutter knew about love could probably be poured into a thimble!

As if on cue, Cass tossed back his tequila, strolled to her table, and straddled a chair. She struggled to ignore the captivating shower of sparks that danced along her nerves. The crackle of current between her and Cass had always been like some hungry, growling thing. Never had it been more dangerous than tonight, when she had to keep her head cool and her heart hard to discern the truth from his lies.

He doffed his Stetson and set it on the table. "The name's Cassidy," he said in ironic tones. "William. Most folks call me Cass."

"Uh-huh."

"You got a name?"

"Depends on what I'm wearing."

The twitch in his lips betrayed his mirth. He'd maneuvered his chair close enough for her to catch the faint whiff of sandalwood soap.

"Seems like we've met before," he drawled.

"Must've been a past life."

"As I recollect, you weren't so fond of wearing a beard back then."
"A wretched nuisance," she confided. "It itches like hell."

"I like it."

"You would."

Never missing a beat, she dealt the first hand for Stud Poker. The Queen of Hearts showed on her side of the table, the Knave of Hearts on his.

"How fitting." His baritone was velvety, nearly a croon. Picking up chips, he tossed them to the center of the table. He'd staked 100 dollars.

Showboater.

Peeking at her cards, Sadie was hard-pressed not to sigh. They were crap, but she called his bet anyway.

"Don't know too many men who wear sun-shades in a poker game," he drawled.

"You calling me a cheat?"

"You wanna wrassle over it?"

"You'd only get whupped."

He flashed all those pretty teeth. "That's why I brought an extra lariat."

She ducked her head to hide her smirk. Oh, he really was a cut-up.

PROTECTING HER SECRET SON

Protecting Her Secret Son
by Regan Black

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Contemporary  Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PROTECTING HER SECRET SON Blurb:

Shannon Nolan thought she’d escaped a nightmare world of ruthless crime - until her son is kidnapped! With nowhere else to run and no one else to trust, she puts her life in the hands of her boss, firefighter Daniel Jennings.

PROTECTING HER SECRET SON Excerpt:

Her breath stuttered when she saw the gate swinging back and forth in the breeze, the latch broken. She pushed through, still shouting.

The yard was empty and far too quiet. The swings on the playset swayed listlessly, no boyish laughter spilled from the fort and the trucks in the sandbox were stalled out.

Aiden had raced to the playset when she’d dropped him off this morning while the sitter’s twin boys, a year older than Aiden, had been carving ruts in the sandbox with their dump trucks.

As she turned for the kitchen door, her heart leaped into her throat. The door had been forced open, the doorjamb a splintered mess above and below the lock. Her phone rang in her hand as she debated whether or not to call for help.

“Hello?”

“If you call the police, I’ll send the kid back to you in pieces,” a man said.

She blinked and turned her face to the sun in an effort to erase the terrifying images the rough, mean voice created.

“Mommy!”

Aiden’s voice carried over the line, bringing her a rush of relief along with the pain of knowing a stranger held her son hostage. “Let me talk to him,” she pleaded.

The call ended and quashed the last of Shannon’s hope. Aiden would not be inside the house.

THE BOYFRIEND SWAP

The Boyfriend Swap
by Meredith Schorr

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Comedy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

THE BOYFRIEND SWAP Blurb:

Is Christmas really the most wonderful time of the year? New Yorkers Robyn Lane and Sidney Bellows aren’t so sure. Robyn has always dated struggling creative types. For once, her parents would love her to bring someone with health insurance and a 401(k) to their Chrismukkah celebration. Her actor boyfriend doesn’t qualify. While across town, Sidney’s professional life already belongs to her parents. She’s an attorney at her father’s law firm and she works tirelessly to keep her love life private. If she brings her lawyer boyfriend to their annual Christmas extravaganza, her parents will have the wedding planned by New Year’s Eve.

A mutual friend playfully suggests they trade boyfriends for the holidays. The women share a laugh, but after copious amounts of wine, decide The Boyfriend Swap could be the perfect solution. This way, Robyn can show off her stable attorney boyfriend and Sidney’s high-society family will take no interest in her flaky actor beau.

It’s a brilliant plan—in theory. In practice—not so much. When Will turns out to be the boy-next-door Robyn crushed on hard throughout her teenage years, and Sidney’s family fawns all over Perry like he’s an Oscar-winner rather than a D-list wannabe, one thing is certain: The Boyfriend Swap might just change their lives forever.

THE BOYFRIEND SWAP Excerpt:

“Holding hands, some touching, and little pecks are fine. As long as we show some affection, my parents won’t question the lack of making out,” I said, almost choking on my words. I was having trouble focusing on the road with Will Brady as my passenger, and the current topic of conversation wasn’t helping. I flashed back to the last time we’d ridden in a car together. School had closed early due to an ice storm. I was terrified to drive home and the buses had already left. Before I could protest, Jordy, who was a freshman, asked Will to give us a ride and, of course, he said yes. I remembered sitting in the backseat and trying not to get caught looking at Will’s reflection in the rearview mirror.

“Do you and Perry full-on make out in front of your folks regularly?”

Even though I was looking at the road, I could still see Will’s amused grin through my side vision. To talk myself out of blushing, I focused on the vanity plate of the car in front of me—GRNSON1.  “Not at all. I meant if we make small shows of affection, no one will be skeptical.”

Will tapped my thigh. “I’m teasing you. I don’t think it will be too difficult. Unless your parents are suspicious by nature.”

My leg tingled in the spot where Will’s fingers had been. “They’re not. But they’ll be surprised.” To my knowledge, Will had no idea of the extent of my crush back then. He probably assumed my parents would consider it a humorous coincidence that their daughter was dating an old neighbor—nothing more, nothing less. I should have warned them, but I was too afraid they’d see right through my lies.

THE SWEETHEART MYSTERY!

The Sweetheart Mystery
Brash and Brazen #4
by
Cheryl Ann Smith
Genre:
Contemporary Romance

Harper  Jane Evans is so over pro
cheerleading but she’s not quite ready for prison. Good thing she’s
got a badass ex-boyfriend ready to go to bat for her . . .
Sure,
Harper made a few unsavory threats against her team’s manager—she’d
had a few drinks and she despised the skimpy uniform he expected her
to wear. That didn’t mean she wanted him dead. But when the sleazy
dude is found murdered in his tighty whiteys, Harper is the number
one suspect—and former FBI agent Noah Slade is the one man who can
help. Too bad she once told Noah she never wanted to see him again .
. .
Noah
may have done a number on Harper’s heart all those years ago, but
he’s determined to do right by her now. Yet the fiery beauty isn’t
the only demon from his past, which makes hunting down a murderer by
her side . . . complicated—never mind the powerful attraction still
pulsing between them. Good thing he’s willing to do just about
anything to keep from losing Harper again. And an old love just might
bring her a new career—assuming she can stay out of jail . . .

EXCERPT
Harper dug through her closet and pulled out a little red dress that she’d been saving for a special occasion. A charity event with Noah was the perfect place to dust it off. Small crystals edged the hem and bodice, giving the dress sparkle and she needed sparkle. After his comment in the car, she wanted to knock Noah’s feet out from under him.

Since his confession, she’d been feeling warm and fuzzy. Despite locking down her heart with a chain Noah couldn’t break, she just couldn’t completely shake him off.

Yes, she agreed to sex, no frills, all fun, sex. But she couldn’t quite fully give him her trust.

What if they dated, got married, and had kids? Then something crappy happened. Would Noah run for refuge with another woman? He had before. Could she take that risk?

Equal parts of her were worried, and ready, to take the next step. She so wanted to test his lovemaking skills.

With the tide turning away from her as his best suspect, Mignon was unlikely to interrupt her and Noah again. By the end of the evening, she hoped to be knee deep in the sheets with a warm and naked Noah.

After showering and flat ironing her hair for a different look, she put on makeup and a barely-there red bra and matching tiny panties. Next, she slipped into the dress and loved the feel of the satin against her bare skin.

Shoes with sparkles on the straps completed the picture. She’d just found her dress clutch when Noah arrived. She’d left the door unlocked. “You ready?” he called out.

Taking a deep breath with her hand on her chest, she walked into the living room on high heels.
Noah went still. “Wow.”

Dressed in a tux with a white shirt and bowtie, he was heart-stoppingly handsome. Not only had he shaved, but he’d had his hair trimmed. “Yeah, wow back.”

She joined him. He took her hand and kissed the inside of her wrist, sending tingles up her arm. Up close, he smelled spicy and male. If not for the chance to speak to Betty Anne, and having spent too much time on her hair, she would’ve chucked their plans and taken him right to the bedroom.

Noah offered her his arm. “Is it appropriate to be very aroused right now?”

Laughing, she linked her arm through his. “I hear you.” She steered him to the door before she lost her resolve to behave. Going with an attempted baseball analogy, she said, “You’re pitching pheromones that I’m catching.”

JACQUIE ROGERS RECEIVES MULTIPLE GOLD MEDALS!

What a great past week we’ve had at our house! Our friends Jacquie and Mark Rogers—two of our all-time favorite people—arrived on October 25. Jacquie was nominated for the Will Rogers Medallion Award in Humor for HOT WORK AT FRY PAN GULCH and SIDETRACKED IN SILVER CITY.

Each of these books features Honey Beaulieu—Man Hunter. Honey is a bounty hunter like her father and always gets her man. Defining Honey's genre is impossible as her stories have humor (obviously), adventure, fun animals, some romance, and a ghost. I can only say they’re fun to read!

The wonderful news is that on Saturday, October 28, at Cattleman’s Steak House in the Fort Worth Stockyards, Jacquie won a Gold Medallion for each book! I have to say I was not at all surprised she won a first place—always fun to say “I told you so”. ☺ What did surprise me is that she won two more Gold Medallions as her publisher for the two books. Jacquie said Mark should have received those medallions. He is such a chivalrous and kind man he insisted all the credit should go to Jacquie.

 Will Rogers Medallions

To make matters even better for Hero and me, Jacquie and Mark provided tickets so we could attend the dinner and witness her triumphs. We had a great steak dinner and met several western authors. Judging from those we met, western authors are a nice group of people.  Seeing Jacquie win made ours a perfect evening!

Jacquie and I set up our lap tops in the dining room with the sincere intention of working. Jacquie is way too much fun for me to concentrate on my story for long.  I laughed a lot and we talked and talked and laughed some more. Jacquie made memes for us, which I appreciate since I don't do well at graphics. Plus, we kept having internet trouble. Luckily, both Mark and Hero are electrical engineers.

On Tuesday, we met with authors Carra Copelin and Bea Tifton at Red Robin for giant burgers and sweet potato fries and, for me, several glasses of Dr Pepper. I was certain I’d never be hungry again, but my appetite proved me wrong the next morning.

Carra Copelin, Bea Tifton, Caroline
Clemmons, and Jacquie Rogers
That's Sassy snoozing on the table.

Jacquie Rogers has written westerns, western romance, fantasy, and Honey Beaulieu. Jacquie has published five Hearts of Owyhee (Idaho) Series books that include MUCH ADO ABOUT MADAMS, MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALS, MUCH ADO ABOUT MUSTANGS, MUCH ADO ABOUT MAVERICKS, and MUCH ADO ABOUT MINERS. Currently, she is writing the sixth in this series. I love these books and highly recommend them.  P.S. You won’t find a more deserving hero than Cole in MUCH ADO ABOUT MARSHALS.

Sorry I'm missing the image for MINERS

I also love SLEIGHT OF HEART, in which Jacquie used information from her aunt about numbers and gambling. I do NOT mean her aunt was a gambler. She was a brilliant mathematician, but that's a story for another time.

Jacquie's MAIL ORDER RUCKUS appears with my MAIL ORDER PROMISE featuring sisters in the duet MAIL ORDER TANGLE.

We also wrote about sisters for the American Mail-Order Bride Series: Jacquie wrote MERCY, BRIDE OF IDAHO and I wrote PATIENCE, BRIDE OF WASHINGTON. Since I've never been to Washington, Jacquie had to be one of my research sources. Of  course, Jacquie grew up in Idaho, so she is her own research source for that state.

Her latest release is IDAHO FAIRY TALE BRIDE but she has numerous short stories and novellas available.

Look her up on Amazon. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with a Jacquie Rogers book!

Jacquie and Mark Rogers

On November 1st Jacquie and Mark packed up and left our home.  Picture me sad. Very sad.
I guess we have to share them with others, but our house seems awfully quiet without them here.

GRANT ME THE MOON WON!

What a great week! I received a surprise email from the Independent Digital Award Contest held by Oklahoma Romance Writers.  My book GRANT ME THE MOON won first place in short contemporary.

The idea for this book occurred to me as Hero and I drove from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to Lubbock, Texas to visit family. Our route took us through Post in Garza County, just below the Caprock escarpment. A fork of the Brazos River runs through the county that is mostly ranch land. There are also wind farms.

View of the Caprock in the distance

Evidences of early man found in Garza County include Clovis spearheads. In 1934, archaeologists also discovered the sixteen-foot-long tusk of a prehistoric imperial mammoth. A type of arrow point used by hunters before A. D. 1500 was uncovered in the county during the 1960s and named the Garza point. The archaeological site is called, what else, the Garza Site. That's on private land and not available to us for a tour.

A Clovis spearhead

Nevertheless, Hero and I always wished we could visit the Garza Site. We’ve enjoyed visiting places like Chaco Canyon, Hovenweep, and Mesa Verde. Since we couldn’t visit the Garza Site, I invented one on a nearby ranch.

Writing fiction is so great!

Allow me to share some of GRANT ME THE MOON. Here’s the blurb:

All Tory Fraser intended was to show her high school history club students a local archaeology dig. How could she know the excursion would involve a murder? Or that one of her students would be suspected as the killer? And she had no idea she would meet the man of her dreams.

Grant Grayson has taken over management of Grayson Ranch near Post, Texas to give his grandfather a less arduous schedule. A flash flood washed away an old talus slope on the ranch to reveal a prehistoric cave that is a Clovis site. Being a good citizen, he invited the nearest large university archaeology department to excavate the cave. When a gorgeous blonde high school teacher asks his permission to take her students to the site, how can he deny her? Especially when he's instantly attracted to her.

Tory and Grant are drawn into the investigation to clear her student but unintentionally make themselves a target. They must ferret out the murderer before they’re killed.

Now I’ll share an excerpt from GRANT ME THE MOON:

He guided her inside [the restaurant] and they were shown to a table.
After they’d placed their orders, he asked, “Your grandmother, is she all right?”
“Grandpa died last spring. She’s not ill, just frail and deeply in mourning. I was lucky there was an opening in the school.”
“Where did you teach before?”
She offered a wry smile, almost as if embarrassed. “Assistant professor at Texas A&M.” She shrugged and tilted her head. “I realize it appears I took a backwards step, but I was the one who could rearrange my life to move here. Fortunately, I genuinely enjoy teaching high school history.”
“So your grandmother is sad rather than ill. Does she get around well?”
She raised her eyebrows and nodded. “In fact, she can keep up with me. After Grandpa passed away, she was so heartbroken that we were afraid her health was deteriorating. Actually, it was. She wasn’t eating properly and not sleeping well. Or, she was staying up most of the night and sleeping most of the day. With me here, she keeps regular hours and we have breakfast and supper together.”
He reached across the table and laced his fingers with hers. “But not tonight.”
She met his gaze and smiled before she slid her hand to her lap. Disappointment claimed him at the loss of her touch.
“I stopped by the store on my way home and bought her a chicken pot pie in a brand that’s healthy. I only hope she’s doing as I asked and having that and a salad for dinner.”
After they’d eaten, he drove under the speed limit on the way back to Post. Her company fascinated him and he wished he could prolong the evening. When they reached the edge of the Caprock above Post, he pulled over at a wide space on the shoulder and opened the sunroof.
“I love this spot. You can see the lights of our little town below and the stars above.”
She relaxed against the seat and head rest. “The almost full moon tonight obscures many of the stars. This is a beautiful vantage point, though. As if we’re divine and are hanging above the world. I could almost reach out and touch the moon.”
He reached for her hand and entwined their fingers “Should I grab it for you?”
She offered a whimsical smile. “Let’s leave it there so everyone can enjoy the moonlight.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SON OF THE MOON Excerpt:
The last house in the village stood by itself in the midst of a large garden. Wind chimes jingled softly in the night breeze. A cuckoo called. The door opened and a woman beckoned me. I couldn’t stop shaking.
Inside, lamps were lit. Yellow light danced around the walls. On the floor lay richly colored rugs and soft cushions. A low table was set with a warm meal. Light glittered off the brass brazier and the copper bowls. However, there was nobody in the room.
“Please, don’t make me wait any longer,” I whispered. “Just let me see Paul.”
The man clapped his hands and a woman entered the room.
She led a little boy by the hand. I dropped to my knees. The boy stood and stared at me gravely. He was four and a half years old, tall, sturdy, with long, magnificent eyes in a triangular face. He had a proud nose and a wide forehead. His blond hair curled softly and lifted off the back of his neck and temples. He stood perfectly still. I hardly saw him breathe. But a pulse beat in the base of his throat. A pulse I knew so well.
I stretched my arms out to him, my vision blurring with tears. “Come, Paul,” I said in English.
He came into my arms, laying his head gently on my shoulder. His small arms crept around my neck. I held him. I just held him. I hardly dared to breathe. It was akin to seeing a ghost.
I stood up and swung Paul into my arms, holding him on my hip. For a minute I had only one urge, to leave, to take my child and leave.
