THE HUSBAND MAKER BY KAREY WHITE and Western Roundup Continues

Husband Maker Tour

The Husband Maker by Karey White

Charlotte’s a girl with nicknames. She may not love being called Charles or Chuck, but the hardest nickname to take is the one she was given in college, the one that’s followed her now for too many years. They call her “the husband maker” and sadly, it fits. Every guy she’s dated since high school has become his next girlfriend’s husband. Not hers. Not three girlfriends down the road. The next.

Is she doing something wrong or is she just cursed?

When Kyle Aldsworth enters the picture and sweeps her off her feet, Charlotte begins to hope that maybe she's not destined to be single forever. A senator’s son with political aspirations of his own, Kyle's wealthy, handsome, and in need of a wife. Will Charlotte be disappointed yet again, or will she finally be able to make a husband for herself?

THE HUSBAND MAKER Excerpt:
Mrs. Shelton’s words bounced around in my head. They call her the husband maker.

“That’s quite a frown you’ve got going there.”

“Sorry.”

Angus dipped his head, forcing me to make eye contact with him.

“Don’t be sorry. Just talk to me.”

“Have you heard anyone call me the husband maker?”

Angus leaned back in the booth and shook his head. His dark, worried eyes watched me. “Who told you about that?”

“So you have?” When he didn’t immediately speak, I knew the answer. I sighed and leaned back against my seat as well.

There we sat, both of us slouching against our seats, looking at each other.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I whispered.

“Now why would I do that? Why would I purposely tell you something that would hurt your feelings?”

I should have appreciated his desire to spare me, but at the moment, I wasn’t sure what to think. “Wouldn’t a real friend be honest with me?”

“I was honest. If you’d ever asked me, I’d have told you. I wouldn’t have lied to you. But I don’t think a real friend would jump at the chance to share something hurtful. Wouldn’t a real friend be protective?”

I shrugged.

“Who told you?”

“No one.”

“Then how—?”

“I overheard Hannah Shelton’s mom in the restroom. She was telling some other woman that everyone calls me the husband maker.”

“Not everyone, Chuck.”

“You know what I mean. And why shouldn’t they? There I was at Harrison’s wedding. I guess I just made him a husband. I guess I made Skyler a husband. And CJ and Jerry and . . . I can keep going if you want me to.” I would have kept going to illustrate my point, but my voice was starting to quiver, and in a minute, I’d only have two options—cry or yell at Angus. As upset as I was that he’d never told me, I knew he didn’t deserve to be yelled at. He was here for therapy, after all.

“Charlotte.”

His voice was full of concern, and he used my given name, so I knew he wasn’t kidding around.

“What?” My voice cracked.

He shook his head. “Don’t worry about what people say. You’ve had bad luck. That’s all. It isn’t your fault.”

The waitress brought out our food. “Can I get you anything else?”

“This is great, thanks.” Angus wasted no time piling food on his plate. “I hope you’re hungry,” he said after she left.

“I can’t believe we’re eating this much food at almost ten.”

“If the food doesn’t take your mind off all this junk, the heartburn will.”

I laughed.

Angus’s voice turned serious again. “If you wish I’d have told you, I’m sorry I didn’t.”

I nodded. I wasn’t sure I wanted the answer, but I had to ask. “Have you ever called me that?”

“Of course not.”

RUNNING AGAINST TRAFFIC TOUR

STARTING OVER
by Gaelen VanDenbergh

My daughter is going to go to Key West, Florida with my sister and family for winter break, this year. I will fly down toward the end of the vacation to pick her up and bring her home. As I was unsure of what date we would fly back, and I was booking the outbound flight for just myself, I booked a one way ticket.

I can’t think of a single time I have booked a one-way ticket anywhere, even to a place so familiar and like a second home to me as Key West. I felt as if I was taking some sort of plunge, picking up and flying away to a new life, or a new beginning, never to look back. Never to return. Of course this rush of refreshment is false, nor would I want to pick up and leave my life as I know it…But there is a hopeful thrill that accompanies starting over, rebooting, reinventing. People are very flawed, and life is fraught with troubles and emotional challenges. Every day is a new chance for them. For all of us, really. I have a tendency to write about these chances for changing direction. In some cases, as in Running Against Traffic, my characters don't have a choice in the matter.

Once the brief fantasy ended, and I booked our return flight to Philadelphia, I wondered what I would do if I were handed the opportunity to do something differently, to turn my life in another direction. What if I were handed a one-way ticket to another reality?

What would you do differently, if you could? Where would you go? If you’re one of those blissful, contented people, congratulations. I always knew you existed, and I’m happy for you. Perhaps you would take a class in Asian Fusion cooking. If, like me, this has crossed your mind once or twice, email me. I'll post the responses on my website. It's not about regrets, it's about possibilities.

Praise

“My top pick of 2012 YA… This book is just. plain. fun.”

~Jordan McCollum, author of Saints & Spies and I, Spy

“Sariah Wilson's new book, The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back, is hilarious…What follows is a story of fun and romance with some good non-preachy life lessons thrown in.  The voice in the main character, Mattie, makes the whole thing.  I thought it was definitely a book I'd recommend to anyone with teenagers or who just want to read a good teen romance.”
~Julie Coulter Bellon, author of All Fall Down and All’s Fair

“Sariah [Wilson] has written one of the funniest stories I've read in such a long, long time. I literally couldn't put it down. Yes, my poor Kindle's battery died and I was attached to a short power cord, contorted in a very uncomfortable position while I read to the end…. Sariah Wilson captured the back-biting, insecure, hormone-driven, clique-riddled high school atmosphere so perfectly you'd think she never grew up. I dare you not to laugh as you read this witty and oh, so, romantic story.”
~Debra Erfert of Windows into Writing

“Sariah Wilson writes like the best of/most popular YA teen fiction/teen romance authors - Sarah Dessen, Jennifer Echols, Susanne Collins, Cassandra Clare.  She sucks you in and never lets you go.  I finished the ~194 novel in one night because I just couldn't go to sleep without knowing the ending!  I hope that Sariah comes out with more novels, I know I'll be re-reading this one all the time!  She's extremely talented and needs to be talked about.  I highly recommend The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back! to anyone (over the age of 12) who wants a YA novel that's a real modern-day fairy tale.”

~Hilary at Novel d’Tales

“This was such an entertaining story! I shouldn't have started reading it so late in the evening, because I didn't want to put it down to go to sleep…This is a book I can see myself reading several times. It's a fast, clean read with great characters, and I highly recommend it.”
~Andrea of Literary Time Out

The book is wonderful.  It’s quirky and fun.  The story makes you laugh and you fall in love with the characters right from the beginning…This is a well-written book.  It is one that will make you smile and sigh as you remember your first love.  And it has a moral…be yourself, believe in yourself and maybe, just maybe, your fairytale will come true.  Pick up this book.”
~Ana of The Book Hookup

Author Sariah Wilson

Sariah Wilson has never jumped out of an airplane, never climbed Mt. Everest, and is not a former CIA operative. She has, however, been madly, passionately in love with her soulmate and is a fervent believer in happily ever afters—which is why she writes romance. The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back is her fourth happily ever after novel. She grew up in southern California, graduated from Brigham Young University (go Cougars!) with a semi-useless degree in history, and is the oldest of nine (yes, nine) children. She currently lives with the aforementioned soulmate and their four children in Utah, along with three tiger barb fish, a cat named Tiger, and a recently departed hamster that is buried in the backyard (and has nothing at all to do with tigers).

INTERVIEW WITH B. J. SCOTT, AUTHOR

Readers, our guest today is B. J. Scott, writer of Celtic novels. B.J. is talking about her new release, HIGHLAND QUEST, her life, her other books, and her virtual blog tour with Goddess Fish Tours.

Caroline: Please tell us something about growing up?

BJ: The oldest of three children, I was born in Welland, Ontario, Canada, a small town about half hour from Niagara Falls.  As was common in the day, I was married after high school and have a son and a daughter, both grown with families of their own. Sadly things did not go as planned and we divorced after fifteen years. However, I met my current husband a few years later and we are very happy living in our century old home in a small town on Lake Erie with our four dogs and one cat. While I loved to read and dabbled in writing, I would have been considered a jock since sports were a big part of my life. I was on pretty well every school team, volleyball, gymnastics, soccer, field hockey, badminton, track and field, cheerleading. The only one I did not do was basketball. Too short lol.

Caroline: Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

BJ: There are so many authors I admire.  I always enjoy a good Nora Roberts trilogy.  I love Julie Garwood and Dianna Gabaldon’s work. While I do enjoy a good contemporary, romantic suspense or paranormal ghost story, historical romance is my all time favorite.

Caroline: You named three of my favorite authors. What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?

BJ: I enjoy reading, a variety of handcrafts, antiquing and camping.

Caroline: Reading and antiquing are hobbies for me, I used to do handcrafts, but count me out on camping. It's La Quinta Inn for me. How long have you been writing?

BJ: I have always been one to jot down stories and to keep a diary, but started to write in earnest about twelve years ago. I took some creative writing classes at College and the teacher suggested I try writing a story for Harlequin. I worked on a variety of stories, but put it aside for a while when real life became too demanding. About three years ago the bug hit and I started writing again.

Caroline: Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?

BJ: Because I work full time as a child care provider for special needs children, and have a small business on the side, I find I need to write when and where I can. If I have my choice it would be in the easy chair, beside the fireplace with the TV on in the background. I don’t like to work in total silence. I have a net-book and take it with me where ever I go. Not one to sit at the PC for hours at a time but do use it occasionally for my writing.

Caroline: I can’t imagine when you find time to write. Are you a plotter or a panzer?

BJ: I am a little of both. I usually have a storyline planned and know how I want the story to unfold but don’t always write a book in order and it changes often. Nothing is set in stone and sometimes the finished product does not even resemble the outline.

Caroline: Perhaps you’re a plotzer. Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?

BJ: I write historicals and often they are centered on historic events so have some characters from history in my books. My main characters are always fictitious.

Caroline: I imagine you don’t, but I always ask if my guests set daily writing goals?

BJ: Setting a goal with my busy life would be impossible. I am also one who must have the muse talking to me in order to write. That means there are days I do not write a single word and other when I write from the minute I get up to the time I go to bed.

Caroline: What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

BJ: If my story provides a few minutes of enjoyment or escape from stress or problems then my goal is met.

Caroline: What long-term plans do you have for your career?

BJ: I would love to be able to write full time, but right now that is not in the cards. A lottery win or a great contract would make a huge difference ;)

Caroline: I do write full time, but I still wouldn’t mind a lottery win. Since I never buy a ticket, that’s not likely to happen. Would you like to tell us what you’re working on now.

BJ: HIGHLAND LEGACY is the first of the series. I am currently working on the third book in the series. HIGHLAND HOMECOMING takes up where HIGHLAND QUEST leaves off. The focus is on Alasdair, the oldest brother and least likely to fall in love or take a bride. But when he finds an unconscious woman on the beach, he has no choice but to care for her, causing him to question his chosen path.

First of the HIGHLAND trilogy,
still available

Caroline: What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

BJ: Write what you love and know. Write often and don’t give up your dream. Use rejection or critiques to your advantage in order to hone your craft.

Caroline: What interesting facts did you find when researching HIGHLAND QUEST?

BJ: I am a history buff so anything I learn about Scottish history is of interest. But one area I found fascinating was about the Highlanders’ strong belief in magic, spirits and superstitions. Their entire culture revolved around it and one aspect I found very intriguing was the gift of second sight. In my book, Fallon, the heroin has the gift, but considers the ability to see the death of friends and family in advance a curse.

Caroline: My Scot-Irish grandmother had “the sight,” which she called a curse for that reason. What made you want to write about the Highlands?

BJ: Scottish historicals are my all time favorite books to read. I am fascinated by anything Celtic or Scottish and having a Scottish, Irish, and English ancestry, it seems a logical choice. While I have never been to Scotland, it is on the top of my bucket list.

Caroline: So this is a series, but how many books will there be?

BJ: As mentioned in an earlier question, HIGHLAND QUEST is the second book in a series of three. It focuses on three brothers, Connor, Bryce and Alasdair Fraser, all very different in their personalities and their outlook on life, but they share a fierce family bond and dedication to king and country.  While it is a series, each book is written in a way that they can stand alone. I give just enough details in each that a reader can read them in any order and not be confused or lost. Right now there are three books in the series. Two already published and the third a work in progress. There is the possibility that the saga can continue later with the children of the characters in the first three books.

Caroline: Sounds inviting. How about a blurb?

BJ: Here it is:

HIGHLAND QUEST BLURB

No longer content in the shadows of his older brothers and on a quest to find his destiny, Bryce Fraser's chosen path is fraught with danger, passion, and decisions. Can his unspoken love for spirited, beguiling Fallon be triumphant in a time of war and uncertainty, or will they both fall prey to the devious plans of a traitorous laird from a rival clan?

Caroline: And how about an excerpt for readers?

BJ: Here you go:

HIGHLAND QUEST EXCERPT
Loch Ryan, Scotland, 1307

“Wa . . . water,” Bryce mumbled, but there was no one there to listen.

His throat was parched and he ran his tongue over dry, cracked lips, but his action offered no relief. An entire loch lay only a few feet away, but he couldn’t muster the strength to drag himself to the bank and quench his thirst.

“Cold . . . so cold.”

Despite the sun beating down on him, he’d swear he was encased in ice. His life’s blood seeped from his wounds, soaking the ground beneath him. He tried to raise his head, but the excruciating pain radiating across his chest stole his breath away.

Was this what it felt like to die? If so, he prayed the Almighty would be merciful and take him now.

Bryce moaned, a shift in his position bringing on another nauseating wave of agony. He sucked in a short, sharp, gulp of air and stretched his arm out as far as he could, his fingers grappling in the dirt.

If only I could reach my sword.

Beads of perspiration dampened his brow. As the strength slowly drained from his body, drawing a simple breath became more difficult. The end grew near. No time to make amends for sins of the past, and he had committed his share.

Regrets? He had those, too. “Fallon.” He whispered her name then heaved a ragged sigh.

ANDREA STEIN AND ROUGH HARBOR

Please welcome Andrea Stein, author of ROUGH HARBOR. Andrea is on a blog tour promoting her book with Goddess Fish Virtual Tours. She’s offering a $50 gift card to (winner’s choice) Starbucks, Amazon, or WalMart to one lucky person who comments on her blog tour.

Caroline: Readers love to know more about authors. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Andrea: I grew up on the north shore of Long Island which is on Long Island Sound, across from Connecticut. It's full of harbors, beaches, light houses and marshes. The area is also far enough away from New York City that it felt more like the country than a suburb. It was an old area so there were plenty of old homes, plus an historic spy ring from the Revolutionary War. I spent my summers playing at the beach, sailing and swimming, though to t this day I don't like to swim in water where I can't stand. Too afraid that a shark is going to get me, although there are no sharks in Long Island Sound - at least that's what my parents told me. I had one sister who is seven years older than I am so it felt like I was only child.

I was a bookworm and a tomboy so I spent a lot of time in the school library until high school. Luckily my high school was big enough so there were lots of different cliques. I went in for drama club and the student government and stayed away from the jocks. To this day I only exercise because I have to. The other nice thing about my high school was that it was ok to be smart - there was like an AP gang of nerds, so while I wasn't cool, at least I had a place to fit in. The other good thing was I met my husband in high school - but not until senior year. There were just so many kids we hadn't run into each other. He was definitely way cooler than I was and he had a car, so it was pretty much heaven or like Sixteen Candles or Beverly Hills 90210 (when David and Donna start dating) and our prom picture sits right next to our wedding picture. Almost two decades later we have three kids, and live in an old farmhouse in New Jersey - far away from the water, unless you count the creek nearby.

Caroline: What a wonderful place to grow up, and your life sounds lovely. Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

Adrea: Romance, mystery and fantasy. Throw in a fun chick lit book here and there and I'm happy. I love Diana Gabaldon, George RR Martin, Nora Roberts, Barbara Freethy, Mary Stewart, Elizabeth Peters. Even a Clive Cussler now and then.

Caroline: I love those, too, except I haven’t read George Martin. What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?

Andrea: I don't really have any hobbies. I keep meaning to get some but if I have any free time I am usually reading. I like to cook so sometimes I make a nice dinner for my husband (and make the kids chicken nuggets). I have three young kids so, like for most moms, my time is limited. So, I try to focus on the essentials for me - family and my writing and keeping my house from falling apart. Someday I would like to have hobbies, like photography or home decorating or fly fishing or maybe golf or tennis...you know someday.

Caroline: I do know because my hobbies keep being pushed aside to write, other than reading.
How long have you been writing?

Andrea: Since I was a kid. I started with stories about knights and dragons in black and white marble notebooks and then moved onto stories about missing treasure and mysterious islands on one of the first word processors and then for a while I blogged and wrote a tween mystery story. Then I decided I wanted to write for grownup and turned my attention to writing a mystery romance novel in a setting inspired by where I grew up. Queensbay, the setting in ROUGH HARBOR, is made up but it definitely includes elements of many of the coastal towns on both sides of the Long Island Sound.

Caroline: I prefer a fictional town so I can put what I need in it. Where do you prefer to write?

Andrea: Writing is a moveable feast. I write anywhere where I can get solitude. I use a laptop so I have been known to write in coffee shops, in the old barn (heat and electricity), in bed, on the couch and at the kitchen table. I usually have a notebook with ideas and pictures of inspiration that I keep with me so I don't need to be in one place. I always use a computer because my handwriting is so bad it would make no sense to write long hand - I can't read what I write -- even my grocery lists, half of the time. I sometimes use music but it's more of an other noise blocker than the need for some sort of playlist to inspire me.

Caroline: Are you a plotter or a panzer?

Andrea: Plotter. My stories would never go anywhere if I didn't start already knowing most of the major happenings along the way. I am not sure I really believe any writer who says they are a panzer - just seems to me like they must not mind wasting a lot of time and throwing out lots of scenes. And since my books to date have all had an element of a mystery to solve to them, I think plotting is extremely important - you have to know the answer to the mystery before you can write about your characters solving it.

Caroline: Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?

Andrea: No real people or events, but I do try to use real places as inspirations for settings. For instance if I am writing a scene in a restaurant I might imagine some restaurant I am familiar with and write that place - even if the restaurant was in a different state. On the other hand I like to make up towns and regions for my books because it's just easier - and you are bound to get something wrong, which s someone will definitely tell you about, so it's easier just to make it up.

Caroline: I definitely agree about making up locations but using bit from here and there. Do you set daily writing goals?

Andrea: I try to write consistently five days a week. I focus on time instead of word count. I find once I sit down for about two hours I have a pretty decent number of words flowing. For me, with my kids, consistency seems to be the hardest things - not all of them are in school during the day so I still need to do a lot of writing late at night or early in the morning my two least favorite times of the day, so I find even if I can get an hour in on a regular basis I am much better off and overall more productive than in if I try to write for five hours on one day (for instance if I get up early, have a babysitter and then write again late at night)

Caroline: What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

Andrea: Entertainment, happiness, pleasure and characters that you think about and remember after you put the book down.

Caroline: What long-term plans do you have for your career?

Andrea: I am working on the second and third books set in Queensbay. This year 2013 I plan to have all three books out and really focus on getting them into the hands of new readers. For me it can be a bit hard to write and market at the same time, so in 2012 I really focused on my writing and not worrying about if ROUGH HARBOR was selling so many copies a month. Since I did that, I have the second book in the Queensbay series ready to go in late January and the third one expected by the summer, so at that point I am going to take some more time to focus on blogging again. At the end of the day I want to write great books that people want to read - and eagerly anticipate the next one. A great measure of that would be to see my books on a few best seller lists, but a healthy and engaged set of fans is the first step.

Caroline: Would you like to tell us what you’re working on now?

Andrea: As I mentioned I am almost ready with s the second book set in Queensbay, another contemporary romance, called THE COTTAGE. It's the story of Phoebe, the grand-daughter of a Hollywood legend who comes to Queensbay looking for some peace and quiet and to restore a house that once belonged to her grandmother and her lover, Leland Sanders. The relationship was known as the Romance of the Century, but it ended badly. After forty years the scandal has died down and Phoebe wants nothing more than to build a new life. However she meets Chase Sanders, the grandson of Leland. Sparks fly and Phoebe soon finds herself falling for Chase and his playboy ways...but will history repeat itself or will the magic of the Ivy Cottage mean that this relationship is meant to last?

Caroline: What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

Andrea: Work on your writing. Get honest feedback. Read writing books (James Bell, James Frey are great). Write the best book you can. You can search for an agent and publisher if you want, but I think that if you spend your time on writing a great book - one that connects with readers, then you don't need to worry so much about getting an agent and a publisher. Focus on the writing and the rest will follow. There are so many ways out there to get a book published on your own, that it should be the least of your concerns. Focus on knowing your genre, your audience and telling your story.

Caroline: What’s a fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you?

Andrea: I love Twizzlers and hazlenut coffee.

Caroline: What is something about you that would surprise or shock readers?

Andrea: I have watched just about everything and anything Shannon Doherty has ever been in, from Little House on the Prairie to 90210 to Charmed and all of her TV movies in between. Go Brenda!

Caroline: You’ve mentioned that ROUGH HARBOR is the first of a series. How long?

Andrea: ROUGH HARBOR is part of the Queensbay series, which are contemporary romances. Each book focuses on one couple in particular but will include updates on previous couples.

Caroline: Can you give readers a blurb about your book?

Andrea: Here's the Blurb:

After a bitter break up and professional set back in London, twenty seven year old Caitlyn has returned to Queensbay to work for Maxwell Randall, an old family friend, at his financial management firm. So far, bit by bit, Caitlyn’s been rebuilding all she lost after Michael St. John broke her heart …and tried to ruin her professional reputation.

But her past comes back to haunt her when Maxwell unexpectedly turns up dead. Not only does Caitlyn find her career in jeopardy but her heart is too, when Noah Randall, Maxwell’s son, and her first love, returns to Queensbay. Once, ten years ago, Caitlyn was sure Noah was the one for her…but the tragedy of her grandfather’s suicide and Noah’s decision to leave town left her bereft…and determined never to trust him again.

Over the past decade, she’s managed to do her best to forget about Noah Randall and the lingering questions surrounding her grandfather’s suicide. But now that’s he back in town – rich and more handsome than ever, and she can’t help wondering what if? What if Noah really was the one?

Noah Randall left home ten years ago to seek his fortune – vowing never to return until he’d made a success of himself – and show Caitlyn Montgomery just what she’d given up. He returns to find that Caitlyn Montgomery has only grown more alluring with time. Noah’s always wanted he couldn’t have…and now he wants Caitlyn again. But she’s determined not to make the same mistake twice.

While Noah and Caitlyn are revisiting old ground – and forging a new relationship, there’s trouble brewing in Queensbay. Old secrets and new lead Caitlyn to believe that perhaps her grandfather didn’t kill himself – and that Maxwell’s death was no accident. But just how far will someone go to keep her – and Noah – from finding out the truth…and will Queesbay prove to have troubled waters after all?

Caroline: How about an excerpt of ROUGH HARBOR?

Caitlyn Montgomery carefully let herself in the side door with the key hidden under the flowerpot. Police tape fluttered along the back of the house, the side that faced the water, but here, under the small overhang, there was nothing, only a chilly October breeze and the more distant sound of the water lapping at the rocky shore.

The house was quiet, the silence of sadness. Her footsteps echoed across the polished wood flooring of the hallway as she crossed onto the marble tiles of the foyer. She knew it well, had almost grown up here, and had spent many nights here in the recent months, playing chess and sipping whisky with an old man.

The door to Maxwell Randall’s study swung silently open. Caitlyn crossed the floor quickly, her sneakered feet sinking into the plush carpet. She came around to Maxwell’s desk, an ornate, obnoxious thing meant to look like something a Gilded Age Robber Baron would have owned.

It was just as he’d left it. Empty. Maxwell hadn’t been one for bringing work home, she discovered. His desk was clear, a simple blotter aligned in the middle. A phone off to the right, a brass lamp off to the left. A pad of paper and a can of pens and pencils sat within reach. There was no computer, no planner or desk diary. She supposed if there had been one, the police would have taken it.

Slowly, methodically, she leaned over and began to open the desk drawers. Nothing in the two large ones flanking the right, nor the left. She turned her attention to the middle drawer, the thin one. It stuck a bit, and she felt her heart flutter in anticipation. She knelt down, to get a better view. Caitlyn pushed a strand of her brown-black hair behind her ear and squinted in concentration as she carefully slid her hands toward the back of the narrow drawer.

“What are you doing?”

Her head jerked up, hitting the side of the drawer as she rose to her feet.

“You?” Caitlyn said, surprise radiating through her.

There was a pause. Caitlyn drew herself up to her full height and looked at Noah Randall, all six-feet-one of him, standing in the doorway.

AUTHOR BIO AND LINKS

Hi, I’m Andrea Stein, an author, mother, wife, blogger, and a certified mom-chauffeur. I have been scribbling stories for as long as I can remember, including my first adventure story, inspired by an obsession with OUT OF AFRICA (book, movie and biography) about a young girl stranded in Kenya. It was serial fiction handwritten, given to my sister, who couldn’t read my handwriting. That story dies after one installment, but the next year I got a word processor (not a computer, but an ACTUAL WORD PROCESSOR) that showed about twenty lines of text at a time. This was before laptops were widely available and this allowed me to be able to type to my heart’s content in the privacy of my own room. Which I did. I think I spent the time writing stories about my “frenemies” to amuse myself. I also listened to a lot of the Cure and New Wave music. I have since moved on to a happier place.

Even though I read lots of different types of books, I write romance novels with a twist. More like contemporary romance than romantic suspense (I don’t write about serial killers or FBI agents) but I usually like to include a puzzle or mystery for my hero and heroine to solve.

Rough Harbor is my second novel, set in a small New England town. Coming soon is Ivy Cottage, also set in a small New England town on a river.

Other than writing I spend most of my time reading, watching TV, cooking, cleaning, taking care of kids, trying to keep the house clean and folding laundry. I love Twizzlers, chocolate and shows on the WB. For me, reading has always been an escape, a way to escape the ordinary and dive into a world that feels real – but with all of the ‘boring’ parts edited out.

As for the rest of my life, I grew up on Long Island, spent a lot of vacations in small New England towns, went to college in New York City, married by high school sweetheart, worked, had kids, stopped working, and kept on writing. Now I live in rural New Jersey (yes, there is such a thing), and though I don’t own any horses, I do have a barn, which I share with squirrels.

There’s something successful writers always tell new writers about their secret to success. Just do it…Bum Glue…write 1ooo words a day…write for two hours a day….Keep writing. And they’re right. I got more successful with my writing when I started to do it consistently. I don’t write every day, but I shoot for five days a week. This means that the words and pages pile up — and I have stories to shape, make and mold…and share.

BRENDA M. COLLINS AND WITCH IN THE WIND

Perhaps you've noticed that I try to call your attention to authors whose books I believe you'll enjoy. Please welcome Brenda M. Collins to A Writer’s Life today. Brenda is on a Black Lion Blog Tour to let readers know about her sweet paranormal novella, WITCH IN THE WIND. This is approximately 50,000 words written for an adult audience, but also suitable for young adult readers. It's available from Amazon Kindle and from Bandit Creek Books. The links are near the end of this post. I'm sure you'll agree that the cover for WITCH IN THE WIND is gorgeous. Before we learn more about her book, let's find out about Brenda:

Brenda M. Collins, Author
Brenda M. Collins has wanted to write romance since she was twelve years old. At the age of twenty, she spoke to an editor in Toronto, Canada, who expressed an interest in her story; however, she soon realized it takes more than an idea to be an author. She joined a number of writing groups to learn about ‘the craft’ and completed two mystery manuscripts. To help her fellow writers develop strong business skills, Brenda has published articles, and delivered workshops to hundreds of writers, on career planning, professional networking and presentation skills. Her most recent article, entitled "How to Improve your Presentations," is in the 2013 Writer’s Market (Brewer, R.L., ed. F&W Media Inc. p. 153).

Brenda’s debut novel, WITCH IN THE WIND, starts with a murder, but comes to life with witches, warlocks, a canine familiar and a magical dimension called The Otherland. For upcoming titles in The Otherland Chronicles, and other stories, keep an eye on Brenda’s website http://www.brendamcollins.com
and follow her on Twitter: https://twitter.com/bcollinswriter

SYNOPSIS OF WITCH IN THE WIND

Everything happens in Bandit Creek when witches, warlocks and canine familiars slip through the portal from the magical world called The Otherland.

When murder strikes in Bandit Creek, and the victims aren’t who they seemed, powerful guardian warlock, Marcus Egan, is sent from The Otherland to investigate. What he doesn’t expect to find is Avalon Gwynn, the grieving daughter of the victims, who has no idea she’s an extraordinary, hereditary witch. And Avy’s pent up magical abilities have just been set free in the mortal world.

Can Marcus catch a killer while making sure Avy doesn’t bring Crow Mountain crashing down on the town—destroying Bandit Creek for the second time?

EXCERPT FROM WITCH IN THE WIND

Marcus debated if he should fade into the background. In his line of work, his talent for making even another witch’s eye look past him without registering his presence was useful.

He felt another power surge. “What the—

The woman wasn't the magic source. Fierce, dark eyes locked on him, not in a friendly, or mortal, way. And the beast already knew Marcus was there. What the hell is a familiar doing here? Familiars couldn’t be summoned. They appeared only when gifted by a more powerful spirit in times of great danger. There hadn’t been such a creature around The Otherland for centuries. So who sent this one to the mortal world, he wondered. And why?

Pushing away from the wall, Marcus wandered over to the reception desk. By habit, he moved with quiet steps, yet the young woman seemed to sense his approach and turned in his direction. She pulled the cap from her head, pushed loose wisps of hair from her forehead, and looked up at him.

His breath stopped in his throat and his mouth watered. The little nymph was more than the usual pretty combination of golden blond hair and flawless fair skin. Her electric blue eyes, even smudged with fatigue, jolted his gut in a way he hadn’t felt since his teens, when his magical energy was working overtime along with his hormones.

He smiled and managed to keep his stance casual as he kept one eye on the familiar and one on the woman. She seemed startled for a second but then returned his smile with a brilliant one of her own. The familiar didn’t. He bared his teeth and growled.

“I mean you no harm.” He didn’t want the familiar to blow his cover so he stood completely still as he spoke to it directly.

To the woman he said, “Is he always afraid of strangers?”

The familiar rumbled again as if insulted.

“Only you as far as I know,” she replied. Her voice, a rich alto, wrapped around him like a siren’s song. “He was fine with me, and the sheriff, yesterday.”

He blinked trying to regain some control of his brain. “What’s his name?” He eased his hand, very slowly, towards the familiar murmuring reassurances that only the magical beast would understand.

“I don’t know really. I found him last night with no collar.” She shrugged and a light flush colored her cheeks. “I’ve been calling him Busby. You know, after the big furry hats the guards at Buckingham Palace wear. When I first saw him on my porch, that’s what he reminded me of.”

That answers one question, Marcus thought. He’s here to protect this woman. But does she know that? With his hand dangerously close to the familiar’s mouth, he let the beast scent the strength of his power. Warlocks were a level above most magical creatures, having been bred for generations as warriors. Of course, that didn’t mean the familiar wasn’t as strong, or even stronger. No one knew how familiars travelled from witch to witch and many assumed they were from the spirit realm.

Finally, the creature eased back on his haunches.

“Busby’s giving me a reprieve.” He very slowly withdrew his hand. To the familiar he said, “Giving me a chance, aren’t you, Busby. But you let me know who’s got the teeth when it comes to this woman.” He stepped back.

LAWNA MACKIE VISITS

Welcome to Lawna Mackie, a  Canadian who is making a virtual tour South to Texas for our visit. If you like paranormal romance, you'll want to learn more about Lawna's novels.

Lawna Mackie, Author

Caroline: Lawna, please tell readers something about yourself.

Lawna: I was born in Jasper, Alberta, Canada. It’s a very magical place set in the mountains. I spent most of my time growing up in Hinton, which is about 35 minutes away from there. Most of my relatives on my father’s side lived in Jasper, and a lot of relatives from my mom’s side of the family lived in Hinton. I would have to say Jasper is probably one of the nicest places in Canada to visit. This is a picture of Pyramid Lake in Jasper. It’s one of my favorite places.

Pyramid Lake Bridge, Jasper, Alberta, Canada

I have one brother and my husband and myself are very close to him and his family. In fact, they only live about 10 miles away from me. I now live in Didsbury, Alberta, and although I love it here, if somebody had asked me when I was growing up if I would live in the prairies I would have said “Heck, no!” Anyway, here I am about fifty minutes north of Calgary. My husband and I have four furry-legged children. Two cats and two dogs. We live on a beautiful acreage.

As a teenager I read my first romance novel and I was hooked! So I guess I was a bookworm, but I was also a bit of a jock. I was on the track and field team.

Caroline: Beautiful lake photo. Who are your favorite authors and favorite genres?

Lawna: My favorite authors are Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan. I enjoy a good paranormal romance with a fairy tale theme. I also like historical romance.

Caroline: Glad to hear you like historical romance, since I usually write those. However, I have one paranormal book out, OUT OF THE BLUE. What’s your favorite way to relax and recharge?

Lawna: I love spending time with my hubby. We love camping and fishing! I love sitting by a campfire contemplating what I should write next.

Caroline: Do you have a favorite quote that sums up how you feel about life?

Lawna: “Follow your dreams...with your arms flailing, hair flying, and screaming at the TOP OF YOUR LUNGS!”

Caroline: I hadn’t heard that one, but I like it. How long have you been writing?

Lawna: I have been writing openly for about six years. All my life I secretly wanted to write a book, but never said anything.

Caroline: Where do you prefer to write? Do you need quiet, music, solitude? PC or laptop?

Lawna: This is my writing desk and it’s portable. It has wheels and I wheel it all over the house when I get bored of a certain location. But…the one thing I always have is my little Peppers who chooses to accompany me wherever I write. How precious is that!

Peppers

Caroline: My cat hangs around when I’m writing. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Lawna: I’m a pantser through and through! I hate planning. I’ll get a thought, perhaps sitting by the fire, and poof…I have a book. However, most of my fantasy/paranormals have been inspired by dreams I’ve had.

Caroline: Do you use real events or persons in your stories or as an inspiration for stories?

Lawna: Animals are a real inspiration for me. I actually have a blog that I write called Animal Inspiration. And I always say that my husband is the hero in every story I write. He always shakes his head and walks away when I say that! LOL.

Caroline: Do you set daily writing goals? Word count? Number of chapters? Do you get a chance to write every day?

Lawna: Writing every day is important, but is the most difficult thing to do. I don’t have children and I find it extremely hard. Usually, I will write first thing in the morning before I go to work. The weekends also give me big chunks of writing time. I’m a big believer that it’s not how much you write, but that you write something every day. It can be two paragraphs or twenty pages just write.

Caroline: I agree. We need to write to keep that imagination flowing. What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

Lawna: I hope they get whisked away to another place, where good triumphs over evil and true love conquers all. My stories must have happy endings! And you can always be sure to find critters of some sort.

Caroline: My stories usually include pets, too. What long-term plans do you have for your career?

Lawna: I want to keep writing the stories I love and my big dream would be for me to be able to write full time.

Caroline: That was my dream, too, and now it’s come true. Would you like to tell us what you’re working on now?

Lawna: Right now I’m working on the sequel to my novella QUINN’S CHRISTMAS WISH.

Caroline: What advice would you give to unpublished authors?

Lawna: Write because you love to write. It’s hard work, but if you love to write your passion will show you the way. Don’t be discouraged.

Caroline: Excellent advice: What’s a fun fact readers wouldn’t know about you?

Lawna: Cookies and milk at bedtime make me dream. I come up with the most amazing creatures like, Threeo who is a Hippo-Dog-Burrowing Owl.

Caroline: Sounds like a nightmare. What’s something about you that would surprise or shock readers?

Lawna: I love Christmas! I especially love Christmas television specials.

Lawna's Rudolph

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is my favorite! To prove it I took a photo of my favorite stuffed animal. Okay, I’m giving my age away, but my Rudolph is forty years old! If you look close you’ll even see the stitches in his neck from the numerous times my mom sewed him up for me. I’ll always remember the day I saw him on the shelf in a store. To me he was the real Rudolph. I know my parents couldn’t afford to buy him for me, but somehow my mom did.

My secret is that this Christmas show inspired me to write about a piece of it in my book, PERFECT MISFITS. I’d love to hear from people if you can figure it out. I’ll have a free gift for those that jump to my website www.lawnamackie.ca to tell me what they think it is.

Caroline: Can you give readers a blurb about PERFECT MISFITS?

Lawna: Here it is:

Ryder, commander of the Levarian legion of gargoyles, has a problem. He keeps dreaming on duty…and falling…neither of which gargoyles ever do. Every dream is of the same woman, and every time, it brings on red-hot, searing pain in the crescent-shaped scar on his palm. Driven to find the woman and the reason for his bizarre dreams, he lets himself fall…

…right through to a place he never knew existed…to the woman of his dreams.

Labeled a misfit, Tempest was snatched away as a child and imprisoned in the hidden realm of Misfit Mountain. Locked up by Fedor, the ruler of the kingdom, who intends to take her as his bride, she has no choice but to brave the dangerous snow and ice of the Mountain to escape. Despairing, faced with the impossible choices of Fedor or death, love is the last thing on her mind, until Ryder snatches her from the air and into a whole new realm of feeling.

Can Ryder find the key to freeing her and save them both?

Caroline: How about an excerpt?

Lawna: Certainly.

PERFECT MISFITS ~ EXCERPT

“Please,” Tempest begged shivering beneath the fresh blanket of snow. “I’d rather die.”

She’d managed to escape…again, wishing this would be the last time. How she prayed the swirling snow devils would suck her up and away from this horrid hellhole of a world. Death would be welcome, if it kept her from going back to that place…back to him.

She’d been on the run for hours, wearing nothing more than a thin black cloak and an old pair of large, well-worn leather shoes she’d managed to steal from the guard. The knee-deep snow made her efforts to get away seem impossible. Countless times, she fell, only to push herself back up to her feet and plunge forward. As futile as the situation appeared, Tempest refused to give up. No longer could she feel her feet and hands; they’d gone numb long ago.

If only I could rest for a few minutes.

No! Her mind screamed in retaliation. If you stop, they will find you.

Her breath came in gulps; her lungs were on fire demanding more oxygen and a reprieve from the bitter cold air. The blinding snow went on forever. She had no idea which direction she headed, but hoped it led far away from her captors.

She lifted her arm, trying to shield her snow-bitten eyes from the brutal onslaught of the blizzard, but couldn’t see anything except for the deceiving flat white drifts. Her pace slowed, one step at a time; she was disoriented, tired, and hungry.

With her next step, her stomach fell out from underneath her. She screamed in terror as she fell through the air to an unknown fate. In a poof, she landed, buried in a soft tomb of snow.

The wind had been knocked from her lungs. She opened her mouth, gasping like a fish out of water. Finally, with a gulp, her airways filled with snow-mixed air. Coughing, she sputtered, unable to move. She uttered another weak plea for help, knowing know one would hear her. In the silence, her eyelids fluttered closed, and she drifted into the welcoming arms of darkness.
***
Vigorous scratching, dull and muffled, aroused Tempest from her slumber.

Am I dreaming? Oh gods, are the Vemlers trying to get in?

Relentless and deadly, the filthy, vile creatures could claw their way through anything in search of a meal. She fought them off on a regular basis. Alone in her cell, she was a sitting duck, with only a stick as her means of protection.

She tried to lift her head, but ended up with another mouthful of snow. As she gulped for air, the memory of her escape came flooding back.

No, this wasn’t supposed to happen.

It was worse than a dream. They must have found her, and she remained buried under the snow with no way to flee.

The scratching continued in the snow above, bringing her demise closer by the second. She refused to go down without a fight, and she’d end her life before Fedor ever laid his grotesque hands on her again. In all probability, his touch would kill her anyway.

She held her breath, trying to cease her shivers, knowing she must lie perfectly still and wait…wait for the exact moment before they broke through the small barrier of snow that encased her frigid body—a body that could not and would not freeze to death.

She braced her hands down at her sides, readying to push straight up.

Please let the snow beneath me hold my weight.

Her thigh muscles ached with tension as she contemplated the thought of moving.

Count to three.

They’d expect her to be in a slumber.

One…

Her feet and calves tightened ready for action.

Two…

Her fists clenched into tight balls, prepared to strike. Her stomach rolled, threatening to hurl, but she knew it was empty, and had been for some time.

This is it. Three!

Tempest unleashed whatever strength she had left in her tired, battered body, bursting through the thin barrier of snow.

Two paws hit her square in the chest, and a pair of large glowing red eyes met her stare. Startled and off balance, Tempest stumbled backward. Her feet slid out from underneath her.

Rogue had found her, not the Vemlers or Fedor. She slid downward on her stomach, her arms desperately grasping at anything to stop her fall.

“Rogue!”

The beast pounced through the snow down the hill after her, trying to grasp a piece of her with his large fangs.

It was too late; her body flew through the air. She reached out and snagged a tree branch, to swing in the forsaken snowstorm at the mercy of a small twig protruding from a tiny ledge. Looking down into a vast crevasse with no bottom in sight, she thought maybe she’d get what she wished for, after all.

“No, I take it back, I don’t want to die. Creators, help me, please. Why do you hate me so?” Tempest squeaked, looking up into the sky, which continued to dump endless amounts of snow. Her hands, next to frozen, would not support her weight for long.

Above, Rogue perched on the small ledge preparing to jump after her. “Rogue, no! Stay!” she desperately commanded. A single tear rolled down her cheek, symbolizing her desperation and fear. The crazy beast would die with her; she knew that. If she fell, he would jump after her.

Rogue howled a mournful cry. His large grey-and-tan-spotted body crouched low. Tempest knew he was angry; his pointed ears lay flat against his large square head. She felt his frustration through his piercing red eyes. She swallowed a shriek as her hands slipped slightly.

Rogue moved even closer to the edge, causing chunks of snow to fall in her direction.

“Rogue, listen to me. Don’t do this. You don’t need to end your life because of me.” Even as those words tumbled out of her mouth, Tempest knew the poor beast had no life worth living on the miserable mountain. They were both misfits not suitable to live with the regular folk on Levare. And there was no way to escape this miserable rock covered with ice and snow.

Tempest closed her eyes, wishing she had the power or ability to remove them from this horrid situation. It was impossible, of course, because she had no gifts—only misfortune. Poor Rogue also shared in the bad luck. He was a Gargdog, half gargoyle and half dog. His problem was his wings. A spell gone wrong, they were barely large enough for a pixie to fly with—useless wings on a grand creature. That’s what misfits were—rejects from Levare, banished from the world as though they never existed.

Her body trembled with the last bit of strength oozing from her limbs.

“Rogue goes with Tempest! I will not stay here without you,” the Gargdog growled in the form of words.

She smiled up at him, proud of his speech. “I see you’ve been practicing since they separated us.” It was her attempt to lighten the mood.

“I’m sorry, Rogue,” Tempest squeaked as she slipped another half-finger length.

“Rogue loves Tempest. Not want Tempest to die without him.” Rogue hung his head. She felt his sadness.

“Rogue, I don’t have much strength left,” Tempest said weakly. “I’m not afraid of death. You know I could never be Fedor’s bride. His touch would kill me, anyway. This way is better. I won’t feel a thing,” she lied, trying to sound brave.

“We will go together. Neither will I live under his control any longer.”

Her arms now shook uncontrollably. Her hands had no feeling, but her brain forced the signal to her fingers to grasp as tightly as she could. She closed her eyes and said a quick, silent prayer for all the other misfits who suffered like her and Rogue.

We’ve endured so much pain in our lives. Please, Creators, let us have a painless death. With her silent prayers complete, Tempest opened her eyes, looked up, and whispered, “I love you, Rogue,” and let go.

Quinn is no help, and the mysterious illness afflicting him only makes things worse. Even Christmas, complete with decorated trees, ribbons and bows has no meaning…then along comes Jazira.

Jazira doesn’t know what happened to her former self, the eleven-year old little girl. She drowned, didn’t she, along with half the other folk of Bandit Creek in 1911? Somehow, she’s grown four furry legs complimented with a large wolf head and body. Scared and alone, she reaches out to Quinn and a strong bond is formed. Jazira learns Quinn, and his mother, are threatened by a wealthy powerful citizen of Bandit Creek. She is determined to protect her new family, no matter what.

Christmas Eve finds Quinn staring up at the adorned tree and muttering a quiet prayer. Will the Spirits of Christmas grant his wish, or will the evil surrounding Bandit Creek prevail once again?

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS BLOG TOUR...

WHY I LOVE ROMANCE GUEST POST
By Kaylee Baldwin

I love romance. I love writing romance, I love reading romance, and I absolutely love hearing how people met and fell in love. It’s one of the first questions I ask new acquaintances if they are married or in a relationship with someone: How did you meet?

I oooh and ahhh (and secretly think about putting their story into a book sometime) and remember how special romance is.  But in the nine years since I met my husband, I’ve learned more about what real romance is than I ever thought I would.

I met my husband the day before Valentine’s Day 2004. We were both coming off of relationships and were dragged by well-meaning friends to a Valentines dance held by a college that neither of us actually went to. About half-way through the dance, I noticed him, our eyes caught, and he smiled, so I went over and introduced myself. He asked me to dance (“When you say nothing at all” by Allison Kraus) and we instantly connected. I had never talked to anyone as easily as I did with him. We were married eight months later.

I was pregnant with our first son within two months of being married. It was a crazy time. We were both going to Arizona State, working full-time, and I was sick night and day with my pregnancy. Then it felt like the floor dropped out from under us. When I was five months pregnant, we found out that our baby had major birth defects that would require surgery within hours of being born for him to survive. He had a myriad of other health problems that could be seen through ultra sound and all signs pointed to our son having Down syndrome.

My husband and I mourned for who we’d thought our son would be and all that he’d have to go through. I learned then that Jeremy had a sturdy shoulder to cry on and a very practical mind. It was time to adjust to a new way of thinking. We were going to have a very special child

Our beautiful baby was born that next summer, and my husband and I held hands when they wheeled our six pound miracle away—just minutes after birth—to prep him for surgery. Time seemed to crawl over the next several hours while we waited to hear from the doctor how everything went. The surgeon had assured us that the surgery should go fine, but I knew they were cutting into major organs (his stomach and intestines) and this was my baby. My sweet little baby that I’d only held for seconds before he had to leave.

Our grip on each other tightened when the surgeon came into the room late that afternoon. He said our son had come through the surgery great.  And—even better—we could go see him. We sat on either side of his incubator and took turns sticking our hands in to touch his hands or feet or the top of his fuzzy head. We looked at each other in wonderment at our beautiful miracle baby—and what the two of us had made together.

My husband and I passed our eighth anniversary last month. In this time our son has had countless hospital stays, nineteen surgeries, and he is scheduled for three more surgeries in the next few months. We’ve also had three other healthy and energetic children. I got progressively sicker and sicker with each pregnancy—until this last baby where I lost eighteen pounds and was on an IV for six weeks because I couldn’t keep anything down. My husband says we’re done having kids (he doesn’t want to see me like that again), but I kind of want one more. We’ll see. We’ve got plenty on our plate right now.

When I was younger, I thought that romance meant that my husband would buy me flowers (turns out I’m allergic, so he buys me chocolates), download songs that make him think of me, hold my hands at the movies, pull my chair out for me at restaurants. And he does do all of these things now and then.

We've still got it!

But I’ve decided that romance is more than that. True romance is loyalty. It’s commitment. It’s sharing grief and joy. It’s holding hands when it feels like the world is crashing down around you. It’s knowing that there’s at least one other person in the world that understands what you’re going through.

Almost every day, my husband and I say to each other: I’m so glad I met you. Because that’s where it all began—at a Valentines dance neither of us wanted to go to. And that’s why I love hearing the “How we met” stories and why I love reading them as well. They are just the beginning—a promise—of the amazing romance to follow.

Author Jolene Perry

Jolene Perry is an enigmatic figure. She is most often seen behind her laptop, staring at the words flying onto the screen with reckless abandon.

She survived growing up in rural Alaska, driving like a lunatic, and her husband’s careers in the military, as a perpetual student, and an Alaska State Prosecutor. She also survived as a middle school math teacher using her degree of Political Science and French.

One day Jolene was playing her guitar (probably some-thing juvenile for her kids) when she wondered what it would be like to write a song for a rockstar, and her first book was born. (that book is shelved)

She now lives a very glamorous life as a stay at home mom, elbow deep in dirty dishes and peanut butter sandwiches. She doesn’t even attempt to keep up with the laundry because non-writing time is precious, and her family is sorta awesome.
