Excerpt
Adeline “Addie” McGee and her best friend, Nancy Abernathy, sat on a bench beneath an ancient cottonwood tree. The sun’s noon rays made Addie grateful for the tree’s spreading branches and rippling leaves that shaded them. She stared wistfully at their teacher, Miss Violet Evanston.
Addie took a bite of her sandwich. “Isn’t she elegant? Look how she glides when she walks even in the school yard. She’s far too lovely to spend life alone. I wonder why she isn’t married.”
Nancy sighed and rested a hand on her heart. “Something tragic must have happened. I’ll bet her true love died. Probably she forces a brave face around others, but she cries on her pillow each night.”
“We simply must help her.” Addie unwrapped two peach tarts, her favorite dessert, and passed one to her friend.
“Uh oh, you’ve got that gleam in your eyes. Please don’t come up with one of your crazy plans.” Nancy took a bite and shut her eyelids. “Mmm, your mom is such a great cook.”
She opened her eyes and fixed her gaze on Addie. “Anyway, what can we do? We can’t walk up to her and an eligible man and tell them we think they should wed.”
“Watch her when adults are around and see if she expresses interest in anyone. If she does, we arrange incidents that bring them together.”
Nancy closed the lid of her lunch pail. “I don’t know. Remember what our parents said after we tried to help the preacher create a nativity scene.”
“Mrs. Haggerty and Mrs. Zimmerman made too much fuss over a little animal poop in the sanctuary. We cleaned it up, so why should they care?”
Nancy’s chin jutted out. “I cared. In addition to my regular chores, I had to scrub all our baseboards and shine every window.”
“I had extra chores, too, but that’s in the past.” Addie brushed her hands together before cleaning them with a napkin. “We’re almost fourteen now, practically grown women.”
“I suppose.”
“Oh, Nancy, we’ll be discrete, and no one will even know we’re playing Cupid. Think how good we’ll feel when Miss Evanston is happily married.”
“If she marries, you mean. She might be true to her former love.”
“We don’t know if she had one. Even if she did, that doesn’t help her now. Don’t you want to see her happy?”
“Of course I do. I just don’t want to get into trouble again.”
“You worry too much. What could possibly go wrong?”

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons was not born on a Texas ranch. To compensate for this illogical error, she writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains in a tiny office her family calls her pink cave.
