SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME --#freebook

By Caroline Clemmons

I have such a great deal for you today in celebration of the upcoming St. Patrick's Day! How about a FREE e-book? March 12-16, SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME is free!

There's a later cover, but this
is the one showing on Amazon

As I grew up (with my nose stuck in a book), my mom thought too much reading damaged a person's eyesight. The fact I had to start wearing glasses at age nine only cemented her opinion. She wasn’t a reader until she retired, but then she fell in love with books. The first book she read was one her sister loaned her, THE THORNE BIRDS. Later, Mother said she was so sorry she’d missed all those years of reading.

This was before I was published. When I began writing and publishing books, she was thrilled. One day I decided it would be fun to use my mom’s name in a book. Her maiden name was Lena Mae Phifer and her family and my dad called her Mae. I wanted her being the heroine's mom in my book to be a surprise, so I didn’t mention my plan.

Sadly, before I could finish SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME, my mom passed from a heart attack. I never thought of myself as a ‘mommy’s baby.’ Even though she had told me that she was prepared to die, I was devastated without her. So, I had to put away that story and work on other things for quite a while. I’m sure she knows and she and my dad laugh about my writing. Daddy taught me to read and always wanted me to write. Unfortunately, he had died before I sold my first book. Mother was a super fan of my books.

She had moved near me, and we were close. I talked to her at least once a day, saw her several times during the week, and Hero and I attended church with her on Sundays. There are still occasions when I catch myself thinking, “I’ll bet Mother would think that’s funny,” or “Mother would know.” I don’t actually try to phone her, but the thought crosses my mind.

Be warned that unlike many of my books, this one is lightly sensual. I love this story because it does remind me of my sweet mother. Also, I just like the story. What can I say? Authors find some of our stories please us more than others.

If you haven’t read SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME, I hope you’ll read it now. If you have read it, please leave a review!

After fleeing an abusive husband six years ago, Beth Jeffers wants nothing more than to protect her son Davey and to help her mother operate a boarding house. The women in her family have had no luck with men, and she has no intention of letting any man influence her son. Not even Matt Petrov, no matter how much her lonely heart urges otherwise.

Federal Marshall Matt Petrov, also known as Lone Wolf Peters, fell in love with Beth the first time he saw her. Then she was another man’s wife, so he kept his longing a secret. He’s saved his love for her for six horrific years. Now, the lovely widow and he have crossed paths again. This time, he intends to risk all for a chance at happiness. First he must rescue his distant kinsman from an assassin’s clutches. Will Matt succeed before his kin is killed? And will his secrets shatter the love he and Beth share?

“Nice.” He held her hand to his chest.

She tugged free. “You need sleep.” She turned out the lamp then came back to pull the sheet over him. Light from a full moon poured in the window to outline her. “I folded the quilt back so that if it turns cool toward morning you only have to pull the edge and it will slide right up.”

“Beth?”

“Yes?” She set his boots beside the bed and hung his shirt and jacket on the chair back.

“Please…don’t go yet.” He didn’t deserve it he knew, but he needed her near him. He’d made an error tonight and almost died because of it. Knowing it was mostly his own fault didn’t ease the pain or make the experience any less frightening.

She reached for the chair. “Well, I guess I could sit with you a while.”

“I mean stay.” He patted the bed. “Here. Just for tonight.”

“Matt, what will people think? It’s not proper, even if you’re injured.”

“Who’ll know…or care? I’m wearing my britches and you’re all bundled up. I’m so stove up I can barely move.” He must have lost his mind. Sounded like he begged.

“I-I guess I could sit a bit. Maybe you could tell me about Lionel?”

“Not now. Shut the door and stay beside me.”

Just this once he wanted to experience being in a real home with a good woman. A sample of how life should be, something he could take with him to savor on all the lonely nights to come. He closed his eyes and prayed.

Lord, give me one night and I’ll never ask another thing.

The soft click of the door sent his eyelids open. Had he disgusted or insulted her so she left the room? No, she padded silently around the bed and slid beside him.

Thank you, God.

“Matt? I’m sorry I yelled at you because I thought you’d been drinking.” She laid her hand on his arm.

“S’all right.” He moved her arm to his chest and exhaled. “Good. You’re here, I feel better now.”

She nestled her head against his shoulder. “Then go to sleep.”

“Beth?”

She raised her head. The moonlight played across her skin and reflected in shades of silver and gold on her hair. “What now.”

“I always thought you were beautiful, but the moonlight makes you even prettier.” He skimmed his hand up her arm. “Kiss me goodnight.”

“Matt Petrov, you are not only the nerviest man, you’re plain out of your head. Go to sleep.”

He pulled her to him and claimed her lips. Softly, so he didn’t scare her. After her treatment from Jeffers, he figured she’d be skittish. She resisted for an instant then leaned into him. He deepened the kiss and she parted her lips for him.

Sweet heaven, he’d never known a more satisfying kiss. He tugged her until she stretched along his body.

When she broke the kiss, she moved her legs back to the mattress but laid her head on his chest. “Why’d you do that?”

“Needed to. For six years. Can’t say I’m proud of wanting you when you belonged to another man, but I won’t deny I thought about you.”

He felt her shudder with sobs, her tears ran wet on his chest. Caressing her back, he cursed himself for as big a fool as Jeffers. “Beth? Aw, honey, I didn’t aim to make you cry. Forgive me. I’d never willingly do anything to hurt you.”

“You didn’t. Matt, I’m ashamed. I hated the person I was when I knew you before. You saw me weak and abused. Heard Lionel yell awful things at me. When you came here, I was mean to you because you’d known me then. I didn’t want to be reminded of those times.”

She sobbed again. “As if I could ever forget them. Then, when you told me about him being dead, I—I felt relief. I’m sorry, but only what you’d be if you read there’d been a train wreck and people you never knew died. I must be a terrible person not to mourn him.”

“No, you’re a wonderful person and it’s not like you lived with him long or had seen him recently.” What a hell of a position to be in. How could he tell her how Jeffers died? He stroked her silky hair. “I’m sorry you’re upset, but I’m glad I found you. You’re a different person in a way but you were a sweet woman then and you are now. And a good mother and daughter.”

He thanked God he’d given Jeffers the money for her ticket home, but he’d never let her know about that. She’d hate him for sure if she learned her no-good former husband had borrowed the money from Matt to send her away in disgrace. It’d done her a world of good, though, and had probably saved her life.

She sniffed and rubbed her sleeve at her face. “I’m glad you came, too. I-I’d wondered what happened to you and where you were and if-if you’d met someone.”

He couldn’t tell her where he’d been, at least, not right now. “I didn’t meet anyone.”

“I’m glad. I, um, I mean, I’m sorry you’ve been alone all this time, but I’m glad you don’t have a woman waiting for you to come home.”

“Don’t have a home.” He didn’t add that he didn’t deserve one, that he’d had one once and lost it.

“Where will you go when you leave here?” She trailed her hand across his skin to rest it at the base of his ribs. He wondered if she knew how that touch affected him and if his erection showed in the moonlight. He bent a knee to conceal it.

“Don’t know yet. Guess it depends on how this thing with Ivan plays out.” He hoped Ivan was alive and pain free. Dang, maybe it was the sweetened tea, or maybe it was her being next to him. His own pain receded a little and life surged in him.

“I hope he’s all right. He’s a nice man.”

“Beth, I’m not a nice man.” No point in her thinking different or him trying to pretend. “I might have been once, long ago, but no longer.”

“You’re kind to Davey, and Mama, and all the other people here. You’re trying to help Ivan. Sounds pretty nice to me.” She sniffled again, and he wanted to comfort her, but she had to understand.

He pulled her up, so he could see her face in the light from the window. “No. I’m here because I have a job to do, not because of any higher intentions. And I’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done.”

“A job? You mean helping Ivan is like a job?”

She didn’t get it. “No. Beth, listen to me. I’ve been assigned to help Ivan. Paid. It’s not something I chose to do because I have a kind or generous nature.”

“Assigned?” She pulled away and sat up. “You mean it really is your job? Who are you working for?”

“Never mind. I shouldn’t have said that.”

Instead of any reaction he could have imagined, she laughed. “Whatever it is, at least you have a job.” She settled back beside him, her body touching his from her head at his shoulder to her toes at his ankle. “I thought you were up to no good.”

Dang, she made him feel like a man-and-a-half. He laughed in spite of himself. “Guess I am up to no good, but I’m being paid for it. Not much, but enough to get by.” He turned to face her. “You know that kiss?”

“What about it?”

He raised himself on his right elbow and leaned over her. “Let’s try that again.”

In case you're not familiar with my books, here's a bit about me:

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons was not born on a Texas ranch. To compensate for this illogical error, she writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains in a small office her family calls her pink cave. She and her Hero live in North Central Texas cowboy country where they ride herd on their two indoor rescued cats and a dog as well as providing nourishment outdoors for critters who visit.

The books she creates in her pink cave have made her an Amazon bestselling author and won several awards. She writes sweet to sensual romances about the West, both historical and contemporary as well as time travel and mystery. Her series include the Kincaids, McClintocks, Stone Mountain Texas, Bride Brigade, Texas Time Travel, Texas Caprock Tales, Pearson Grove, and Loving A Rancher as well as numerous single title and contributions to multi-author sets. When she’s not writing, she loves spending time with her family, reading her friends’ books, lunching with friends, browsing antique malls, checking Facebook, and taking an occasional nap. MY NEW WRITING VENTURE

Being invited to write in the Pinkerton Matchmaker Series was a thrill for me. I’ve enjoyed reading this series and am honored to participate. Since AN AGENT FOR MAGDALA released last week, I wanted to share some of my research with you.

In writing this book the first problem I encountered was that there were NO rail lines where I needed them. So, my hero and heroine had to travel by stage from Denver to San Antonio. That required a long trip, but I only included a portion. Otherwise, most of the book would have been about their journey. They couldn't travel in a logical straight route due to lack of roads, availability of water, and Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache.

Red lines are railways
in 1870 map

The hotel in the book, The Menger Hotel, is a real place built in 1859 and remains a luxury hotel today. Over the years many renovations and additions have been made and ownership has changed. At the time of the story, William Menger had died and his wife and son were in charge.

Menger Hotel as it was in 1871
(it's much larger now)

Mary Menger’s meals were locally famous. She planned menus, shopped for excellent produce, and cooked. The menu included wild game as well as the usual meats. Mango trees grew in the courtyard which has since been enclosed. She used the fruit to make mango ice cream. That surprised me. I didn’t realize the trees would grow in San Antonio, even in a protected courtyard. I grew up in Texas but hadn’t tasted a mango until I’d been married several years.

No, you didn’t miss it in geography class—there is no country called Bayergrovenia, the place from which Magdala and her parents immigrated. After all, this is fiction. I patterned it after Luxembourg and tucked the small country in beside France, Switzerland, and Bavaria. Like Switzerland and Luxembourg, Bayergrovenia is neutral. I first used this country several years ago in SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME. In case you haven't read this novella, the link is http://mybook.to/Matt

1838 Alamo sketch by Mary Ann Maverick

As a died-in-the-wool Texan, I was embarrassed to learn the Alamo was not as I had imagined or how I found it in visits. At the time of AN AGENT FOR MAGDALA, the Alamo had not been rescued and was in ruins. There was talk of leveling the chapel as had been done with the plaza. Fortunately, saner heads prevailed. Now the Alamo and her sister chapels--Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, and Estrada plus the remains of the aquaduct are protected as UNESCO world heritage sites.

Talented Virginia McKevitt designed the cover for each of the Pinkerton Matchmaker Series books. She also did the covers for the Proxy Bride Series. I really love the covers she created for my books, don’t you? Her design business is Black Widow designs. I've not met her in person but I don't think she actually is a black widow spider.

I enjoy reading and writing marriages of convenience stories. They add a new dimension to the developing romance. Of course, we know there will be a happy ending but learning how the couple develop their romance is fun.

I hope by now you’ve read AN AGENT FOR MAGDALA, book 37 of the Pinkerton Matchmaker Series. If not, the Universal Amazon link is http://mybook.to/Magdala and it’s available in e-book and print and is enrolled in KU.

VALENTINE'S SPECIAL BONUS

Just in time for Valentine’s Day reading—here is my boxed set HEARTS AND FLOWERS. The set contains three western historical romance novellas already for sale, but readers get one free by buying the boxed set. Three for the price of two—win/win.

You know I love writing and my readers. Boxing these three novellas to give readers a bonus is my way of saying thanks for your loyalty in buying my books. I appreciate and adore each of you for making me an Amazon bestselling author of western historical romance.

Here are the three in HEARTS AND FLOWERS:

SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME is one of my favorite of my works. Probably the reason is that the heroine’s mom is named for my own mother, Lena Mae Phifer. The heroine is named for my mom’s sister, Elizabeth Margaret Phifer. Although my aunt was never called Beth, she is in this novella. The handsome hero, Matt, has to unravel mysteries, stop a murder, and recover kidnap victims. Of course, the lovely heroine does her share. This novella is sensual.

HAPPY IS THE BRIDE is a hectic tale of a wedding in which whatever can go wrong does. But Beth Pendleton and Mason Whittaker become married and found their own family. I thought of this story as sweet until a stuffy review accusing me of writing . . . well, never mind. It is sensual, especially the epilogue.  No one is murdered, no one is kidnapped, no crimes occur—at least not actual crimes. A few things deserve a slap or two from our heroine, but all ends well.

LONG WAY HOME is set in Georgia near the end of the Civil War. Parmelia Bailey is left in charge of her extended family while the men are off at War. That includes her brother’s fiancé and her family, who must be rescued from approaching fighting. Parmelia risks a lot to bring the Hardeman women to stay at her grandmother’s home. Darrick McDonald, Parmelia’s true love who moved away, has returned wearing  Union blue. This is the only time I have set an entire story outside Texas.

Bless y’all!

BLACK FRIDAY GIVEAWAYS

A few friends and I are hosting a BLACK FRIDAY (AND SATURDAY AND SUNDAY) BLOG HOP and book giveaway to get readers in a festive mood and offer relief from shopping. So, kick back and relax with your favorite beverage while you read about a book. My book, but then you knew I'd throw in my books somehow, didn't you? But here's great news for Black Friday from The Wild Rose Press from their garden of books:

Here's my post and giveaway:

My mom, Lena Mae
Phifer Johnson - can
your tell her eyes twinkle?
Authors get ideas from many sources. For this one, I wanted to write a short book in which I used my mom’s name. She was such a fan of my writing (and of me), and I visualized the happy surprise on her face when she saw her name in print. I couldn’t use her name for a heroine and then write a sex scene. Really, I just couldn’t! So I gave her name to the heroine’s mom. The heroine is named Elizabeth Margaret after my mom’s sister. However, I call her Beth in the book and my aunt was never called by that nickname. Still, I knew my mom would like my using both hers and her sister’s names. Unfortunately, my mom passed away before I finished the book. I had to put it away for several years. One day, I decided to finish it--I’m sure she knows and is smiling down on me from heaven, her eyes twinkling with humor.

SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME is a western romance set in 1885, and includes suspense. Available from The Wild Rose Press and other online stores, it's in e-download only. The setting is the fictional town of Winton Crossing in Central Texas near Medina and Bandera.

Blurb:

After fleeing an abusive husband six years ago, Beth Jeffers wants nothing more than to protect her son Davey and to help her mother operate a boarding house. The women in her family have had no luck with men, and she has no intention of letting any man influence her son. Not even Matt Petrov, no matter how much her lonely heart urges otherwise.

Federal Marshall Matt Petrov, also known as Lone Wolf Peters, fell in love with Beth the first time he saw her. Then she was another man’s wife, so he kept his longing a secret but he’s saved his love for her these six horrific years. Now, the lovely widow and he have crossed paths again. This time, he intends to risk all for a chance at happiness. First he must rescue his distant kinsman from an assassin’s clutches. Will Matt succeed before his kin is killed? And will his secrets shatter the love he and Beth share?

Excerpt:

The man who ran Oslo’s Livery Stable narrowed his eyes and looked Matt Petrov up and down. He jabbed a thumb to point across the road. “That there’s the place.”

Riding in from Austin, Matt had entered the small town of Winton Crossing from the east, but it hadn’t taken long to reach this end and the last businesses on the dusty main street. He looked across the road at the large two-story building that appeared to hover on a hill overlooking the Medina River.

The stableman spat a stream of tobacco juice. “Miz Phifer and her daughter are mighty particular about who they rents rooms to.”

Matt knew he looked trail-dirty, but time counted and he’d ridden hard. He flipped the man the coins to pay for his horse’s care. “Thanks.”

Carrying his rifle and saddlebags, Matt strode quickly toward the house. From this angle, it resembled a giant two-story box with smaller one-story boxes at each end. Late morning sun highlighted the building’s peeling paint. In the shade of the long front porch, a child played with a yellow cat.

On Matt’s ride by he’d missed a small sign hung near the door, Phifer’s Boarding House. He opened the squeaking gate and the boy looked up. The kid appeared to be about five and seeing him tore at old scabs in Matt’s heart.

Cuddling the cat, the lad hopped up. “The boarders what are here are all taking a nap. You gonna rent a room?”

“Maybe.” Matt paused on his way to the door. “You live here?”

“My grandma owns this place. Mama and I live here and help out. This here’s Tiger and my name’s Davey.” The boy stroked the purring animal’s head then looked toward the house and lowered his voice. “You better be careful, mister. Mama and Grandma been spring cleaning and they told me to stay right here out of the way until they said different.”

Matt suppressed his smile. “That so? Thanks for the warning, Davey.”

He opened the screen door and stepped inside. The small foyer led to a large parlor. A counter at the far end blocked off another doorway. The furniture appeared well worn but every wood surface gleamed, which accounted for the smell of beeswax. Vases of freshly cut flowers brightened the room’s drab colors and contributed their own aromas of roses and honeysuckle.

Grunts and groans came from the room behind the counter. Matt set his gear on the floor and leaned against the barrier to peer into the next area, which looked to be an office. Two women wrestled with a small floor safe. The safe appeared to be winning.

He leaned over the counter. “Need some help?”

Both women jumped, but only one turned around.

The frazzled older woman, the one Matt figured owned the place, appeared to be in her fifties. Silver threaded through the brown hair piled on her head. She was dressed in gray with a long white apron smudged with dust. Her brown eyes twinkled when she smiled at him.

“Would you? The men who delivered this thing set it in the wrong place. We decided to move it where it belongs. Land sakes, for all our struggles we’ve not made much progress.” Five feet of scratch marks on the floor showed the trail of their limited success.

He stepped around the counter into the small office. “Where you want it?”

She pointed at a place against the far wall. “There, if you can move the thing.”

The tall younger woman kept her head lowered and all he saw was her shapely backside while she tugged at the corner of her navy skirt caught under one leg of the safe.

“Let me.” He tilted the safe to free the fabric, then pushed the unwieldy block of metal into place.

“Oh, finally.” She shook out her skirt and bent to brush at the stain marring the hem. “Thank you—“ When she straightened and looked up at him, she fell silent and paled as if she’d seen a ghost.

Hell, he figured she had. A phantom from her past.

Here's a 5 star review for SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME from Vicky at Sizzling Hot Reviews:

Sometimes, the past can haunt us too much! "Just get over it" is easy to say, but much harder to do. Both Beth and Matt have real issues to overcome in Save Your Heart for Me. They both are special people and are worth the necessary effort to deal with any problems each has so they can be together.

Six years ago Beth Jeffers fled her abusive husband. Now, she wants nothing more than to protect her son Davey and help her mother operate a boarding house. The women in her family have no luck with men, and she has no intention of letting any man mar her son's life. Not even Matt Petrov, no matter how much her heart urges otherwise.

Federal Marshall Matt Petrov fell in love with Beth the first time he saw her. She was another man's wife, so he kept his longing to himself. But when he and the lovely widow cross paths again, he intends to seize his chance at happiness.

Beth made one very big mistake years ago. She fell for the charms of a man and married too quickly only to learn the hard way everything was lies. Turned out Lionel Jeffers had married her for her 'nest egg' thinking she had more money. The abuse, both physical and mental, started even before he gambled away what little money she had. When she ended up pregnant a few months later, he sent her away, not wanting a 'brat' around. She is still ashamed over this while being glad her son has never been exposed to the abuse. She helps her mother run the local boarding house and raises her son much as she was raised: an absentee father with the town gossiping about the mother and never knowing if the drunken father is going to show up. So she holds herself to the highest standards, giving the busybodies nothing to talk about (not that that stops them).

Matt Petrov is haunted by his own past. At one time, he had a small ranch but married a (semi) rich girl more suited to city life. His wife never adjusted to ranch life and when she got pregnant wanted to return to town. He didn't see the need and she, and the baby, died when the baby came early. He has never forgiven himself. This is why he was a gambler and drunk when he knew Beth and her husband six years ago. (Later) Beth's husband framed Matt for his own counterfeiting and the judge happened to be Matt's dead wife's father. Still blaming Matt for her death, this judge accepted any evidence to send Matt to prison, but let him use a different name to spare everyone's families. Between how poor a husband he was and that he has been in prison, he doesn't feel like he deserves to be around decent people. He helps, does good in general, as a Federal Marshall, but doesn't stay in one place long.

That is why Matt is in Winton Crossing. His friend, Ivan, has sent for him after being shot while trying to claim the land/ranch the king of his country (Bayergrovenia) gave him. But Matt was also sent undercover in his Marshall capacity it see what is going on at this ranch that has so many solider-like men at it. When Matt arrives in town, Ivan is missing. And Beth, the woman he still pines for but feels he can't have, is running the boardinghouse where his friend has been staying.

Matt figures that the people at the ranch have Ivan. But he will have to find a way to save him before they kill him. And fight his attraction to Beth. When the boardinghouse is broken into, Matt moves into Ivan's old room to keep an eye on things and make sure everyone is safe. But this puts Beth and Matt too close together...

Will Matt be able to save Ivan? Will Beth be able to get over her issues with her drunken father and abusive husband to see how great Matt is? Will Matt be able to forgive himself his past to offer Beth a future?

Save Your Heart for Me is unexpectedly good. The abusive husband has left a strong impression, yet we don't have to deal with ugly flashbacks. Matt has always longed for Beth, yet doesn't feel good enough for her. It is nice to have the guy be the one with angst for a change, and you can really feel it here. He is not 100% blameless; after all he did drown his guilt in drink for a few years. That he ended up framed for a crime and in prison is a hard way to learn any lesson. And there is no doubt he has become a hero. Beth has had it hard. Given the facts above, she sounds bitter, but really she is more scared than anything. Scared for her son, scared that her husband will come back, and worried about the future. She is not afraid of hard work and doesn't blame her mother for her childhood issues (gossip or her father). And she is doing an amazing job with her son on her own. The surprising thing is that these two are not bitter after everything that has happened to them. In fact they still have a sweetness to them, not obvious but it still comes across. And together, they just make me want to go 'ahhh' and smile.

Save Your Heart for Me is a good western historical (not really cowboys this time). The 'adventure' aspect is light (so it doesn't take away from the character story) but still very entertaining. Caroline Clemmons has written rich characters with issues we can relate to even today. With a full cast of supporting characters adding detail and humor, I was pulled in and didn't want to put Save Your Heart for Me down until finished.

I'm giving away a copy of this book today to one person who comments. I'll give away a different book tomorrow and Sunday, so please return and comment on those days. In the meantime, buy SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME from:

YUMMY DESSERT RECIPE TO PLEASE DAD!

In my March release, SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME, the heroine's mother--named after my own mom--makes scrumptious apple dumplings. Coincidentally (or not), this is my mom's recipe for the apple dumplings she used to make for my dad. She also made them for Hero on his birthday. This year, that's the day after Father's Day, but some years his birthday falls on Father's Day; for instance, the day he was born. And needless to say, my skinny little mom had a real sweet tooth and wanted a sweet dessert after lunch or dinner. If she made do with an apple, she felt she was doing exactly that--making do.

     Lena Mae’s Apple Dumplings

Syrup:
2 cups sugar
3 cups water
1 Tablespoon butter or margarine
½ teaspoon cinnamon

Make this first and set aside. Mix sugar and water and bring to a boil. When sugar dissolves, take off heat and add butter and cinnamon.

Dumplings:
Make pie crust. Roll out and cut into six 6-inch squares. Peel and slice apples (about ½ an apple for each dumpling). Put slices on a square of pie crust. Add ½ cup sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a pat of butter. Fold pie crust to center and pinch to seal. Put dumplings in long Pyrex dish (9x13). Pour syrup over dumplings. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes. As dumplings start to brown, spoon some of the syrup up on them to help glaze over tops.

Serve warm with cream or vanilla ice cream. Pop in the microwave to reheat.

As I may have told you before (probably ad nauseum), I wrote this novella for my mom, but she died before I could surprise her with the published work. I know she and my dad are smiling down from heaven, though. They were very good parents and exceptional people. I had planned to make the hero's name the same as my dad's, but it didn't seem right, having him make out with someone the same name as my aunt. Euwww!  And I couldn't write a love scene for a character with my mom's name.

Here's an excerpt from SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME: The set up is that our hero, Matt, has been shot capturing two criminals. Our heroine, Beth, is feeling guilty because at first she thought Matt was drunk when he returned to the boarding house she and her mother operate in Central Texas.

SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME by Caroline Clemmons

Sometimes, the past can haunt us too much! “Just get over it” is easy to say, but much harder to do.

She was another man’s wife, so he kept his longing to himself. But when he and the lovely widow cross paths again, he intends to seize his chance at happiness.

Beth made one very big mistake years ago. She fell for the charms of a man and married too quickly only to learn the hard way everything was lies. Turned out Lionel Jeffers had married her for her ‘nest egg’ thinking she had more money. The abuse, both physical and mental, started even before he gambled away what
little money she had. When she ended up pregnant a few months later, he sent her away, not wanting a ‘brat’ around.

He didn’t see the need and she, and the baby, died when the baby came early. He has never forgiven himself. This is why he was a gambler and drunk when he knew Beth and her husband six years ago. (Later) Beth’s husband framed Matt for his own counterfeiting and the judge happened to be Matt’s dead wife’s father. Still blaming Matt for her death, this judge accepted any evidence to send Matt to prison, but let him use a different name to spare everyone’s families. Between how poor a husband he was and that he has been in prison, he doesn’t feel like he deserves to be around decent people. He helps, does good in general, as a Federal Marshall, but doesn’t stay in one place long.

And Beth, the woman he still pines for but feels he can’t have, is running the boarding house where his friend has been staying. Matt figures that the people at the ranch have Ivan. But he will have to find a way to save him before they kill him. And fight his attraction to Beth. When the boarding house is broken into, Matt moves into Ivan’s old room to keep an eye on things and make sure everyone is safe. But this puts Beth and Matt too close together…

Will Matt be able to save Ivan? Will Beth be able to get over her issues with her drunken father and abusive husband to see how great Matt is? Will Matt be able to forgive himself his past to offer Beth a future?

Save Your Heart for Me is unexpectedly good. The abusive husband has left a strong impression, yet we don’t have to deal with ugly flashbacks. Matt has always longed for Beth, yet doesn’t feel good enough for her.

She is not afraid of hard work and doesn’t blame her mother for her childhood issues (gossip or her father). And she is doing an amazing job with her son on her own. The surprising thing is that these two are not bitter after everything that has happened to them. In fact they still have a sweetness to them, not obvious but it still comes across. And together, they just make me want to go ‘ahhh’ and smile.

Save Your Heart for Me is a good western historical (not really cowboys this time). The ‘adventure’ aspect is light (so it doesn’t take away from the character story) but still very entertaining. Caroline Clemmons has written rich characters with issues we can relate to even today. With a full cast of supporting characters
adding detail and humor, I was pulled in and didn’t want to put Save Your Heart for Me down until finished.
My thanks to Vicky for "getting" my book. If you're interested, here's the buy link: www.thewildrosepress.com/caroline-clemmons-m-638.html from the publisher, The Wild Rose Press. It's also available at Digi-Books Cafe, Amazon, and other online stores.

SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME is set entirely in Central Texas, but refers to the country of Bayergrovenia. Since no one but me had ever heard of Bayergrovenia (because I made it up), here's a map my sweet Hero husband made for my fictional country. The grandfather of the book's hero and Ivan, the man Matt is sent to help, are from Bayergrovenia, the tiny country in red in the map's center. I wanted Bayergrovenia to border French and German speaking countries.
There's Bayergrovenia, snuggled in
below Germany and above Switzerland,
and between Austria and France

NEWS AND OLD NEWS

Belated Happy Chinese New Year!
Belated Happy Chinese New Year and welcome to the year of the Rabbit! Althought February 2 is the official Chinese celebration, the date varies in other Asian countires.

The Movie
Also belated Ground Hog Day! Did you rewatch “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray to celebrate the occasion? Love that movie? Don't we all wish we could redo some things until we get them right? I certainly do. Maybe that's the appeal of the movie.

Now we have those out of the way. Whew, those items are old news and illustrate I’m way behind.

Available March 10
from The Wild Rose Press
But here’s something for which I’m early. I’m happy to announce that my historical novella, SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME, will be released on March 10 by The Wild Rose Press. Don’t you think the cover is whimsical but beautiful? Don't the warm colours cheer you in this weather? The heroine helps her mother operate a boarding house. Once again, the setting is Texas, no surprise there.

Here’s the blurb:

After fleeing an abusive husband six years ago, Beth Jeffers wants nothing more than to protect her son Davey and to help her mother operate a boarding house. The women in her family have had no luck with men, and she has no intention of letting any man influence her son. Not even Matt Petrov, no matter how much her lonely heart urges otherwise.

Federal Marshall Matt Petrov, also known as Lone Wolf Peters, fell in love with Beth the first time he saw her. Then she was another man’s wife, so he kept his longing a secret he’s saved his love for her for six horrific years. Now, the lovely widow and he have crossed paths again. This time, he intends to risk all for a chance at happiness. First he must rescue his distant kinsman from an assassin’s clutches. Will Matt succeed before his kin is killed? And will his secrets shatter the love he and Beth share?

Here’s an excerpt:

The tall younger woman kept her head lowered and all he saw was her shapely backside while she tugged at the corner of her navy skirt caught under one leg of the safe.

“Let me.” He tilted the safe to free the fabric, then pushed the unwieldy block of metal into place.

“Oh, finally.” She shook out her skirt and bent to brush at the stain marring the hem. “Thank you—“ When she straightened and looked up at him, she fell silent and paled as if she’d seen a ghost.

Hell, he figured she had. A phantom from her past.

“Beth? Beth Jeffers?” Matt tried to mask the sensations raised by seeing her again—surprise, longing, heartache—but doubted he succeeded.

She, on the other hand, quickly recovered her composure and turned up her nose as if she’d smelled a skunk. “What are you doing here?”

“Honestly, Beth, I’m surprised at you.” Her mother looked from one to the other. “You two know each other?”

Beth pushed a stray golden curl from her face and raised her chin. “We met long ago.”

She wore her blonde hair in a bun, but wisps escaped to frame her face. Time had been good to her. The years had rounded her a bit in the right places and softened her—except for her ice-cold blue eyes.

She gave Matt a measuring glare and balled her fists at her hips as if challenging him. “Whatever you want, you won’t find it here.”

Matt wanted to say something sharp to make her think he cared nothing for what she thought, but his mind went blank. Danged if she wasn’t prettier than when he’d known her six years ago, especially without bruises marring her ivory skin from her sonofabitch late husband’s fist.

Here in North Central Texas we are experiencing record winter temperatures and days of school closings. Nothing to compare to folks in the North and East, true, but we don't have snow plows, snow shovels, honkin' big furnaces, or tire chains. In addition, most school districts have contracts with power companies that when the temperature dips below a certain number, school is called off to free up that fuel for homes. Here are a couple of photos Hero took in our snow and ice.

No, our house isn't on a hill. LOL Just as Hero snapped the photo, our dog Webster tugged on the leash.

Our black Shih Tzu Webster loves taking Hero for a walk. Unlike Hero, Webster loves playing in the snow and sniffing every animal trail. Of course, Webster comes equipped with a fur coat.

Thanks for stopping by. Please come back now, ya hear?
