YOUR ASSIGNMENT SHOULD YOU ACCEPT IT

 By Caroline Clemmons

I hope you’re enjoying the arrival of Fall. I love the colorful leaves and cooler weather. Someday, I’d love to visit New England at this time of year. Not likely to happen. I’ll have to content myself with a couple of watercolors done by a New England artist, Mrs. E. Van Liew.

Today, I want to encourage each of you to do something for posterity. Doesn’t that sounds important? In my opinion, it is.

Here goes: Even if you couldn’t care less about genealogy or history, someone in your family’s future will. Start now and write down everything you remember your mom, dad, aunts, uncles, and grandparents telling you about their lives. I mean all the little stories that they told—good and bad—which seemed incidental at the time you heard them. Unless you record them permanently, those stories will disappear.

You don’t have to do any research!

Facts remain for others to find. Thank goodness for our National Archives, for Ancestry.com, and for the massive archives stored by the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) in Utah. But, you see, those are just the skeleton of your past. You need the anecdotes to flesh out the body of information and give it life.

Personally, I have enjoyed research because (1) I'm a history nerd and (2) facts made history come alive for me. When you learn where those in your family served in wars back to the American Revolution, those people are not just names and dates—they’re individuals.

For instance, the reason ancestors of my dad's moved to Georgia was because they blew up an English munitions warehouse near the end of the American Revolution. You can understand how this made them extremely unpopular with the English, who put up handbills and issued warrants for the extended family. They had to abandon their former home quite rapidly.

I admit learning this relieved my mind. Previously I had wondered if they lived in Georgia because initially someone in the family had come when Georgia was a penal colony. <g> See, research can be liberating!

As I said, you don’t have to do research.

Simply write the stories you remember. They don’t have to be in chronological order. Some of the stories will be funny, some exaggerated, and some sad. You’ll discover repeating cycles of strength and weakness. They are part of you. No, finding bad people doesn’t make you bad; that’s not what I mean.

I’ve done my part for my family. My mother-in-law asked me to write a book about her life for her grandchildren. I did, but then we had to have a second set of copies done for other people in the family. Since I did a book for my mother-in-law, I had to do one for my mother, even though I don't think she really cared until it was finished, other than the keeping things equal. (Hero’s parents and my mom were in the same Sunday School class.) My dad had asked me to write a book about his family, and I’d been collecting information for years. Unfortunately, he died before his book was printed. Now I’ve done three family books, and I’m done. My sister-in-law did one about Hero’s dad.

Now it's your turn for your family.  See how I passed the buck... er, I mean baton.

Stay safe and keep reading. Don't forget Sheriff Jesse Cameron and Rosalin Arnold's story comes out the 29th!

BOOK REVIEW - HIDEAWAY BY NORA ROBERTS

 By Caroline Clemmons

I remember the first Nora Roberts novel I read, Irish Thoroughbred. That book inspired me and made me want to write my own romances. (Although, it was almost twenty years later before I was published.) Through the years, Ms Roberts has continued to amaze readers and publishers with her high quality writing and her amazing ability to produce large numbers of consistently good books.

She is responsible for changing the way publishers thought. Previously, publishers believed that an author should not be overexposed and shouldn't publish many books a year. Nora Roberts disproved that theory. She's written far more than 200 books since Irish Thoroughbred was published. Writing as Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb, she continues to amaze readers.

I’ve met her at several conferences (no, she wouldn’t remember me) at which she was congenial to everyone. In addition, I know she has helped numerous writers and writers’ groups. You can tell, I am all fan girl for Nora Roberts.

HIDEAWAY is about a great acting family, such as the Barrymore and Redgrave lines. Here’s the official description:

A family ranch in Big Sur country and a legacy of Hollywood royalty set the stage for Nora Roberts’ emotional suspense novel, HIDEAWAY.

Caitlyn Sullivan had come from a long line of Hollywood royalty, stretching back to her Irish immigrant great-grandfather. At nine, she was already a star—yet still an innocent child who loved to play hide and seek with her cousins at the family home in Big Sur. It was during one of those games that she disappeared.

Some may have considered her a pampered princess, but Cate was in fact a smart, scrappy fighter, and she managed to escape her abductors. Dillon Cooper was shocked to find the bloodied, exhausted girl huddled in his house—but when the teenager and his family heard her story they provided refuge, reuniting her with her loved ones.

Cate’s ordeal, though, was far from over. First came the discovery of a shocking betrayal that would send someone she’d trusted to prison. Then there were years spent away in western Ireland, peaceful and protected  but with restlessness growing in her soul.

Finally, she would return to Los Angeles, gathering the courage to act again and get past the trauma that had derailed her life. What she didn’t yet know was that two seeds had been planted that long ago night—one of a great love and one of terrible vengeance.

I loved this book! When I say I couldn’t put it down, I am being literal. The story painted the characters and setting vividly. Even had I not been to the places mentioned, I would have been able to envision the places mentioned.

The main character, Caitlyn Sullivan, is admirable. She’s smart, respectful to others, and a strong child who becomes a stronger adult. Dillon Cooper remains on his family ranch, but his love for Caitlyn doesn’t waiver. The suspense kept me unable to stop reading until the conclusion. Once again, Nora Roberts has given readers a captivating book that will remain with them for a long time.

Keep reading and stay safe!

NEW SERIES RELEASES!

I have great news! Today the first of the sweet historical Impostor For Christmas series releases. This nine-book series is, as you suspected, about a mail order bride who pretends to be someone else. There are nine reasons for the charade and nine reactions when the true identity is revealed. Each book in the series is stand alone and has no relation to the other books except each book occurs at Christmastime. Each is a complete story to brighten your mood and relieve your holiday stress.

First to be released is Cheryl Wright’s novella, MAIL ORDER LILLIAN: AN IMPOSTOR FOR CHRISTMAS.

Lillian is an unwilling impostor bride. What will Simon do when he discovers her secret?

Montana -- 1880. Simon Watson, owner of a prosperous ranch, needs a wife to look after his motherless four-year-old daughter.

Joy Hanover accepts Simon's proposal, but later changes her mind. She begs her cousin Lillian to go in her place -- leaving out the part she found most objectionable, namely Simon's child.

Lillian plans to tell Simon about her deception the moment she arrives in Samson's Creek, but the best of plans can often go awry.

What will happen when Simon finds out he married an impostor? Will he have the marriage annulled, or will they stay married and get the happy ever after ending each of them crave?

Author's Promise: This is a heartwarming historical Christmas novella with a happily ever after ending and no cliffhangers. It is a clean and wholesome story with nothing more than hugs, kisses, and holding hands.

HOW WELL CAN YOU PRETEND?

Remember the movie “Catch Me If You Can”, about the man who successfully pretended to be a variety of professions—from co-pilot to physician? Imagine the organized (and frightening) mind it took to pull off those feats. Posing as someone you aren’t must be nerve wracking even for a sociopath. I suppose con men and swindlers may live an extended charade as a way of life. Do you wonder if they ever start to believe they’re who they pretend to be?

In the upcoming Christmas story MAIL ORDER GLORIA: IMPOSTOR FOR CHRISTMAS, book 7, now available for preorder, Gloria is given an amazing opportunity. She’s yearned for a different life, something she’d dreamed of but hasn’t been able to manage on her own. Although she’d been desperate to get away from her life in Georgia, she is both relieved and scared by her opportunity. There’s a catch—isn’t there always? For at least a short while, Gloria must pretend to be her friend, Juliet. Gloria’s friend extracts a promise that she won’t reveal her true identity until Juliet sends word.

Here’s the description of MAIL ORDER GLORIA.

A desperate woman…

A distrustful rancher with a secret…

And a boy in need of a family.

Orphaned at an early age and sent to live with her relatives, Gloria Tabor is unhappy with her treatment from her snobby aunt and spiteful cousin. In desperation, Gloria leaves her only relatives’ home. No matter what happens, she vows she will be more forceful and stronger in the future. No more timid and shy wallflower. But with her tiny savings, where is she to go? The question is sobering, but she is determined she will not return to her kin’s home.

While deliberating her lack of choice, she overhears a young man comforting a sobbing woman that she recognizes as a friend from school. After a few minutes of conversation with them, the young woman offers Gloria the chance to escape to a ranch in Texas as a mail order bride. In exchange, Gloria must promise not to divulge her real identity until the couple has successfully eloped and managed reconciliation with the friend’s father. Though hating the idea of lying, Gloria is too relieved at the opportunity to say no.

When she changes trains on the way to her prospective groom, Gloria rescues a ten-year-old boy from a policeman threatening to take the boy to the local orphanage. Heart filled with sympathy for the homeless child, she intercedes. Later, she wonders how her prospective groom will react to her bringing a child with her, especially after she learns his propensity for “finding” money.

Texas rancher Dwight Price is a stickler for honesty. Once someone has lost his confidence, he won’t trust the person again. He strives to live up to his beliefs. On the one hand, he isn’t certain he wants to wed the daughter of his father’s oldest friend. On the other hand, he looks forward to a life of quiet harmony with his mail order bride.

Near Christmas, Gloria gets a telegram releasing her from her promise. Dwight wants to know who sent the wire and why. Her explanation destroys the faith he had in her—and then his own secret crops up.

Can these two overcome the damage to their relationship or will each be alone again?

If you like sweet western historical romance, you’ll enjoy MAIL ORDER GLORIA. This is a stand-alone, complete sweet western historical romance novella set in 1880.

Enjoy an excerpt of when Gloria and Dwight’s first meet:

The stage slowed and came to a stop in a cloud of dust. Gloria sat paralyzed by a myriad of thoughts. What if her groom didn’t accept her? What if he was angry she’d brought Mike? What if he was mean or a drunk? His letters had sounded nice, but he could have lied.

Mike stared at her. “You’re awful pale. You gonna be sick or something?”

She sighed and relaxed her grip on the seat. “I’ll be fine, but thank you for asking.”

Mr. Kelly reached for the door. “If you’ll excuse me, I’ll get out and then help you, Miss Forest.” He climbed to the ground and then turned to extend his hand to her.

“Thank you, Mr. Kelly. You’ve been very kind.”

Mike followed her and jumped to the ground. He looked around. “Not a big town, is it?”

The man smiled at Mike. “Big for these parts. Hasn’t been long since they had to fight Indians and renegades hereabouts. Well, I’ll bid you good day and good luck.” He tipped his hat and reached for his suitcase.

She became aware of a group of people waiting on the board sidewalk. The younger of the two men caught her eye. He was tall and wore a black suit with a white shirt and an odd black tie that tied in front. Goodness, but if he’d smile he’d be handsome.

The couple with him must be his parents and the boy his son, Tommy. The smiling man she supposed to be Dwight Price’s father looked like an older version of him, though not as robust. The woman smiled and her face displayed the lines to prove she smiled often. Tommy was tall for his age.

The man she thought to be Dwight stepped forward. “Juliet?...Miss Forest?”

She avoided lying by not answering the question. “You must be Dwight Price. I’m pleased to finally be here.” She put an arm around Mike’s shoulders. “This is my newly adopted son, Mike.”

Dwight’s face clouded. “Son? I had no idea.”

Mike tried to scoot behind her, but she held on to his shoulders.

“He and I met in Chattanooga and he agreed to become my son. Since you have a son near the same age, I thought you wouldn’t mind.”

Mike swallowed hard. “Sh-She s-sa-saved me from the orphanage. She said I can call her Mama.”

After what seemed like a long time, but probably was only a couple of seconds, Dwight offered her his arm. “Come and meet the family. You, too, Mike.”

She pulled Mike forward as they stepped onto the boardwalk.

“This is my mother, Orinda Mae.”

The woman pulled Gloria into a big hug. “I’m so glad you’re here. You just call me mama.” She released her and grabbed Mike’s upper arms. “You call me Grandma.”

Mike swallowed hard again. “R-Really? I can call you Grandma?”

“You sure can. I’m pleased Juliet brought you. I hear orphanages are awful places, though they are necessary.”

Dwight guided her to his father. “Juliet, you may remember my father, Jeff.”

She smiled at the man. “I was a different person then.” Not a lie but it felt like one.

Misrepresenting herself to these nice people knotted her stomach. This appeared to be the kind of family she’d always hoped would include her. She’d enjoy this life as long as she could. No matter what happened, she’d have good memories. Even if they sent her away when they learned the truth, perhaps they’d let Mike stay on the ranch.

Papa Price beamed at her. “It’s been a long time, but you were pretty then and you are now. I remember you as being a real sweet girl.”

“Thank you for saying so. I’ll try not to disappoint you.” She’d do everything she could to make herself fit into the family.

“You call me Papa or Jeff—whichever makes you comfortable.”

Tears pricked her eyelids. How she’d missed her own father. “I’d like to call you Papa if you’re sure.”

He leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “That’d please me.”

Papa extended his hand to Mike. “Glad to have you. Call me Grandpa.”

“Thank you, sir.” Mike grinned. “I mean Grandpa.”

Dwight beamed at the young boy who was next in the line of people waiting. “This is my son, Tommy. He and Mike should get along well since they’re about the same age.”

Tommy smiled at her. “I’m eight now. Can I call you Mama?”

“Of course you may. Can I call you Tommy?”

Tommy giggled.

Mike shrugged. “I’m ten.” In a stage whisper, he added, “She says a lot of funny things.”

I love this story and hope readers will share my enjoyment. Preorder now for a December 3rd release. You remember the magic of preorder—select the book now and poof! It will appear in your e-reader like magic on release day. That seems miraculous to me.

In the meantime, stay safe and keep reading!

ANOTHER SALE FOR YOU!

By Caroline Clemmons

After a horrific week spent moving across our North Central Texas county to a smaller place, we are frazzled. So many decisions, many of them painful, but we are moved! Of course, the garage is filled with boxes taunting us that they have to be unpacked and the contents placed where they belong. Too much to consider! Our pets love their new home and so do we.

I want to tell you about are my current special sales. From last week, you may recall that my time travel OUT OF THE BLUE is on sale all month for 99¢. I loved writing this story and have had lovely reviews.

This week, please let me tell you about GABE KINCAID, from the Kincaid Series. GABE KINCAID is a sensual romance with a sex scene. You’re warned, so if you prefer chaste, you can skip that portion of the story. GABE KINCAID is on sale from Saturday, October 16 through Friday, October 23.

The heroine bears one of my all-time favorite names, Kathryn Elizabeth, named after my two favorite aunts, both much beloved by the family and others who knew them. Kathryn Elizabeth goes by Katie. That is, until she has to run for her life. She joins the circus where she eventually poses as Maharani Shimza, Mystic of the East.

I told you we’d been moving, which is why the sale price won’t start until Saturday morning—my fault for procrastinating. Since Katie wears a costume, I thought that made this an appropriate book for near Halloween. There are multiple killers in this book.

Here’s the blurb:

Gabe Kincaid has reasons to hate lies and those who tell them. He moved from Austin to Kincaid Springs and joined his great uncle’s law firm. Gabe believes he’s happy and pushes aside those moments of loneliness, of wishing for more. He strongly believes in the law, in justice, and obeying rules. Doing what’s right is fulfilling, isn’t it? Then why is he so fascinated with a circus fortuneteller who spins tales faster than a cowboy whirls his lariat?

Katie Worthington poses as Dorothy Duncan in a small-time circus. If she isn’t behind the scenes mending costumes or in the circus kitchen, she’s disguised as the fortuneteller, Maharani Shimza, Mystic of the East. Even so, she worries about being killed by the men pursuing her. She fears a brawl at her fortune telling tent that sends her into the Kincaid’s protective custody will end with her exposure and death. Then, a death at the circus implicates her. How can she escape when that attorney pops up every time she turns around?

Will Gabe and Katie let the sparks between them ignite into a passionate romance or exposed secrets destroy their chance at a happily ever after?

Enjoy an excerpt of their first kiss:

She pressed her hand against his arm. “Don’t, Gabe. It’s such a nice afternoon. Don’t spoil it by prying.”

“All right. But I wish you’d trust me with all your secrets, Shimza. Damn, I feel like a fool calling you that but I don’t even know your real name.”

“Shimza will do. And I do trust you to keep me safe here.”

“But you don’t think I could if you told me more, is that it?” He gently clasped her shoulders and turned her to face him.

She met his gaze, pleading with him, “Please, it’s too . . . complicated.”

Slowly he slid his hands across her shoulders, lightly up her neck, and caressed her face with his thumbs. He rested his hands gently on either side of her face. “Then let’s make it a little more complicated.” He leaned forward and claimed her lips.

She dissolved against him. His gentle kiss increased in fervor. Her arms slid around him and her fingers weaved into his hair.

His hands slid across her back. Stroking. Touching. Hugging.

One of his strong hands skimmed her ribs beneath her breast. Brazenly, she wished he’d move higher where she ached to be touched. As it was, the heat of his touch near burned through her clothing.

He broke their embrace, his chest heaving. “I’ve never kissed a client. Damn, Grandpa will have my hide.”

She rested her head against his powerful shoulder. “Mmm, I don’t think so. Perhaps you noticed we were seated next to one another at dinner. I could be wrong, but I think the Judge and Mrs. Gamble are conspiring. Judge Kincaid smiled when we left the dining room together.”

“You don’t say? Then, if it’s all right with you, I’m kissing you again.”

And he did. Not that she was an expert, but her verdict was he kissed very well indeed.

 Stay safe and keep reading!

A FAST-PACED ROMANTIC SUSPENSE /TIME TRAVEL

Welcome Fall! Although North Texas can’t compete with New England for colorful leaves, our trees are showing varying shades of gold and orange. Mixed in with our native dark green Live Oaks, these present a pleasant delight for the eyes. The Mountain Cedars—not so much! They’re green, but they bear powerfully irritating pollen that has many of us sniffing, sneezing, coughing, and rubbing our reddened eyes.

In spite of that, I love the Fall season. We get cooler temperatures, a little rain, and the building anticipation of the coming holidays  through the end of the year. I’m not particularly a Halloween fan, that is, except for the candy. I do love the treats available this time of year. Hero and I deliberately buy things we don’t love to prepare for the trick-or-treaters we anticipate. Otherwise, we’d have to go buy more as the day came closer. Not that that has ever happened….

To celebrate the spirit of the spooky season, I have lowered the price of my romantic suspense and time travel combines, OUT OF THE BLUE, to 99¢ for the entire month of October. Caveat: When I checked, Amazon had not yet lowered the price. Please don’t give up—they’ll get around to it soon.

The fault for the delay is mine. You see, Hero and I are downsizing, and I mean really, really downsizing! We are so involved in sorting, packing, and donating that each of us has threatened to go to bed and pull the covers over our head. Life has been so hectic that I let my blog time slip up on me.

Here’s the description for OUT OF THE BLUE:

1845 Ireland: Herbal healer Deirdre Dougherty never cursed at anyone, much less put a curse on the potato crop of her remote Irish village. She’d rather take her chances with the Atlantic lapping at the bottom of the cliff than the mob intent on burning her as they have her cottage. Deirdre leaps . . . and plops down over 175 years later in a Texas lake. She doesn’t understand how she’s ended up with the man from her recent visions or why he has the same name as the saint to whom she prayed. She’s in danger of falling for the handsome policeman who rescued her, in spite of the fact that he thinks she’s lying to him. How can she convince him her story is true when she’s finding it difficult to believe the tale herself?

Texas Today: Police Detective Brendan Hunter wants answers. Who shot him and killed his partner? Why? And why does Deirdre know details of the event? Her story has to be a colossal fabrication or else she’s a beautiful psycho. Either way, he wants her gone before he becomes even more fascinated with her. But he can’t let her out of his sight until she confesses to how she learned details no one but he and his late partner knew.

You can grab an e-book of OUT OF THE BLUE here:

Enjoy an excerpt from OUT OF THE BLUE:

A huge black car apparently had been parked at the back of the lot by the Dumpster and pulled alongside her. Deirdre saw the dented fender before the door opened. Then she realized the two scary guys from the bar were inside, partially obscured from view by the tinted windows. The blond stepped out and reached for her.

She understood his intent so she screamed for help and ran away from him. People came to the store window.

Polly rushed to the door. “Blossom’s calling the police. Hold on, Deirdre, we’re coming.”

But no one rushed to her aid. What could a few ladies do against these two frightening men? She’d have to save herself, so she screamed again.

The blond caught up with her and grabbed her arm. “No use screaming, lady. You’re coming with us.” He dragged her toward the car.

She kicked him and screamed again, clawing at him with her free hand. She drew blood along his arm and scratched his face.

He jerked her and grabbed both her hands. “You’re gonna be sorry you made me mad. I have lots of ways to get even.” He told her what he planned as he yanked her toward the car’s back seat.

Strong as an ox, the man held her in an iron grasp so her feet barely touched the ground. He heaved her toward the open door. Suspended above the ground, she braced a foot against the car’s body. With her other, she kicked him between the legs, just as Ma had taught her.

He turned red and released her as he doubled over and dropped to his knees. Without him supporting her, she hit the pavement hard. Her back took the force of her fall and the air whooshed from her. She couldn’t stand but she rolled away.

The driver pointed a gun at her. “Get in or you die right here, right now.”

What had Brendan said about this situation when they watched television? “Never get in the car with anyone.” But how could she resist without him shooting her? She recalled the blonde’s threats. If she had to die, she’d rather it be here quickly than at the hands of these two later. She made the sign of the cross and prepared herself for death.

A horn honked and tires squealed. Brendan yelled. “Deirdre, I’m coming.”

Blossom and Polly hurried toward her, each carrying a broom and wielding it as if they intended to beat on the blond man. Several associates came with them and lobbed jars of something at the car. In the heat, the jars exploded like small bombs. After one loud crack, red oozed along the spider-webbed glass windshield.

“What the hell?” The scary man in black turned back toward the steering wheel. “Damn it, Rod, with or without her, get the hell in here.”

She struggled to her knees then stood, backing away.

Apparently unable to straighten, the guy she’d kicked hoisted himself back into the car. He yelled, “I’ll get you for this, bitch. When I do, you’re gonna beg me to kill you before I’m through.”

The black car took off with a squeal from smoking tires, dripping red salsa and leaving glass shards in its wake. The driver had his head stuck halfway out the side window, his front windshield obviously too damaged and dirty for the wipers to clear. Aromas from the salsa’s spicy contents filled the air—cilantro, tomatoes, chili peppers. Deirdre fell in love with those scents.

As with most of my other books, OUT OF THE BLUE is also available in paperback and is free in Kindle Unlimited. If you haven’t yet read this fast-paced story, I hope you’ll take advantage of the October price to grab your copy.

What’s your favorite part of Fall?

Historical Romance

Blurb

Inheriting Darnley Lodge from old Lord Paxton is the best thing that’s happened to lovely widow Mary Milne, whose fondest desire is to remove her ailing little boy from London’s noxious air.

Why in the devil did his dead father request that Lord Paxton spend Christmas at Darnley with the scheming woman who’s deprived him of his family’s old hunting lodge?

Excerpt

Chapter 1

Mary Milne could not imagine why she had been summoned to a solicitor’s office. Her late husband most certainly possessed nothing worthy of legal transfer. Indeed, his paltry military pension barely kept food in the bellies of her and their son.

She hated taking Stevie out on so miserable a day. It was not only beastly cold, but she hated exposing her son’s delicate lungs to London’s noxious air. Today one could barely see one’s hand in front of one’s face for the sooty skies. How she missed the clean country air of East Sussex and Darnley Lodge.

What a difference one Christmas made! Last Christmas she and Stevie had enjoyed being with kindly old Lord Paxton at his beloved Darnley Lodge. Now he was buried in the churchyard near Darnley, and she and Stevie had been forced to return to London and their squalid lodgings.

“Come, my little love. Wrap your coat tightly around you. We’ve got to go into the City,” she told her son. She dreaded it. She could not afford to take a hackney coach. They would have to walk. She calculated it would take them nearly an hour to reach the establishment of Mr. Percy Stonehouse, Esquire. She prayed Stevie wouldn’t get sick. Again.

She even contemplated leaving him alone, but he was only eight. Too young to be on his own. What if the building burned down? And he was still young enough to be frightened when left by himself. Even at the risk of damaging his lungs, she couldn’t go off for that long without  him.

She squashed a hat on her own blonde locks, donned her worn, hand-knitted shawl, and they left. It had been so long since she’d seen the sun shine, she wondered if it had forsaken the Capital altogether. What a wretchedly miserable day it was with piercing winds and a cold that penetrated every pore of her body.

At least Stevie had a warm coat. She had only a well-worn pale blue merino pelisse that had been part of her trousseau ten years earlier, and this topped by her shawl for additional warmth.

She looked longingly at those they passed who wore heavy woolen coats. Those trimmed with costly furs drew her admiration though she knew she would never own such attire.

The severe cold did not discourage travelers on the busy Strand. There was a dray delivering ale, several coal carts and many stagecoaches guided by teams of four horses—which always fascinated Stevie—various carts with building supplies ranging from boards to stones, a number of curricles and private coaches, and far too many saddle horses to count.

After almost an hour, her feet beginning to blister, they had made it to a narrow street a few blocks east of St. Paul’s. A sign swinging in front of a slender building proclaimed this to be the place of business of Mr. Stonehouse. She announced herself to a youthful, bespectacled clerk.

“Mr. Stonehouse is expecting you, Missus.” He got up and escorted them to an adjoining office.

A white-haired man with stooped shoulders rose when they entered. After introducing himself, he asked them to be seated in front of his desk. “I’ve asked you here today, Mrs. Milne, to explain the terms of Lord Paxton’s will.”

It was a few seconds before she realized he must be discussing her sweet Lord Paxton. When he’d sent her away, she’d never thought to hear from him again.

And she hadn’t. Lord Paxton’s kindly housekeeper, Mrs. Ballard, had written to tell her of Lord Paxton’s passing the previous month. Mary had wept for days. It was like losing her own father.

Then it suddenly occurred to her, dear Lord Paxton must have left her a little something. How very kind. She fleetingly wondered what thoughtful gesture he had made. Stevie had adored the pony in his stable. Perhaps he’d left the pony to them. Not that they could afford to keep it. But, still, it would have been a thoughtful bequest.

Oh, dear. How could she disappoint Stevie? Nothing would give him more pleasure than having a pony of his own, but if that was what Lord Paxton left them, she would have no choice but to sell the animal. She could barely afford to keep a roof over their head. There was no way she could come up with money for livery fees.

Poor Stevie’s heart would wrench even more than leaving Darnley Lodge had hurt him.

Her eyes misted as she looked into Mr. Stonehouse’s craggy face.

“As you must know,” he said, “Lord Paxton has left the bulk of his considerable estate to his son and heir, David.”

She nodded.

“But,” he added, “he has settled a hundred a year on you for life.”

Her mouth gaped open, and tears gushed. A hundred a year was the difference between comfort and poverty. She had never expected such generosity. “I am profoundly grateful,” she managed.

“There’s more.”

Her eyes widened. Her heartbeat thumped.

“Lord Paxton has stipulated in his will that he wants you to have Darnley Lodge.”

It was almost as if a lightning bolt had struck her, she was so shocked. “But Darnley was the place where he and his son had so many precious memories. I . . . can’t. . .” How could she be refusing this? She’d never loved a place like she’d loved Darnley. And Stevie had never been happier—or healthier—than he’d been at Darnley.

“It’s not your decision, Mrs. Milne, to accept or reject. This is Lord Paxton’s last will and testament. It’s what he wanted most. Can you question his judgment?”

She shook her head. “Lord Paxton was the wisest man I ever knew.”

“I concur. Therefore, madam, you must acknowledge Lord Paxton’s wisdom and accept Darnley.”

She didn’t dare allow herself to look at Stevie. He might just be a child, but he was intelligent enough to understand what he’d just heard. The prospect of returning to Darnley would have him wild with glee.

“I’ve never admired anyone more than I admired Lord Paxton. If he wanted us to live at Darnley Lodge, then we shall live at Darnley Lodge.”

Now she allowed herself to cast a glance at Stevie.

Her heart felt as if it could expand right out of her chest. She hadn’t seen him smiling like that since . . . since he’d been at Darnley nearly a year ago.

“Oh, Mama! We can be at Darnley for Christmas!” Then his little freckled face saddened. “I shall miss Lord Paxton.”

“So shall I, love, so shall I.”

Mr. Stonehouse cleared his throat. “Before you leave today, I am authorized to give you a sum of money. Your quarterly installment. It should help with your transportation expenses.”

The first thing Mary thought of was hiring a hackney to take them back to their lodgings. What a wonderful luxury it would be.

She took a quick glance at the bottom of her shoe. A hole had worn through. No wonder she’d blistered. Thanks to Lord Paxton she would be able to purchase a new pair of shoes, too.

Then she and Stevie would leave as soon as possible for their new home.

John Beauclerc, the Earl of Finchley, strolled into White’s, accompanied by his friends Christopher Perry and Michael Knowles. Their fourth friend, David Arlington, recently elevated to Earl of Paxton, had gotten a considerable start on them. His brandy decanter was already half empty. Lord Finchley came to stand beside David, wagging his brows as he regarded the bottle. “Drinking alone?”

“Got every right to drown in my own cups.”

“And why would that be?” The man they all referred to as Finch sat beside David while the others also sat at the table with their long-time friend. The four of them had been exceptionally close since their days at Eton.

“Because I’ve been grossly bestrayed by my own father.”

“You mean betrayed.”

David nodded. “Indeed.”

“But your father’s been dead over a month now. . .  Good lord, did he leave his fortune to someone else?”

“Not exactly.”

Christopher leaned toward David. “Then how were you betrayed?”

“Of all the properties the Paxtons possess, I shall not inherit the very one that means the most to me.”

“Paxton House in London?” Knowles asked.

“No,” David replied.

Lord Finchley looked askance at him. “He couldn’t give away Tonton Abbey. It’s entailed.”

David’s eyebrows folded. “How long have you known me?”

“More than twenty years,” Finch answered.

“Since we were eight years of age,” Knowles said.

“And do you not know where I have always been the happiest?”

“Oh, yes!” Lord Finchley brightened. “Darnley Lodge.”

David nodded morosely. “Ever since I was a wee lad, that was where I wanted most to be. That’s where I learned to ride. Papa and I would always go there without the women and girls. Just the fellows.”

“The shooting there was the best,” Christopher Perry acknowledged.

“It still is,” David said. “But I won’t get to enjoy it.”

“Who the devil did you your father bestow it upon?” Lord Finchley asked.

David poured another glass of brandy and took a long swig. “Some She-Devil who bewitched the old fool.”

“He left the lodge to a woman?” Perry asked, his dark eyes narrowed to slits.

David nodded, the set to his head as grim as one in mourning.

“A doxy, no doubt,” Lord Finchley said.

“It does seem so, though Papa was never in the petticoat line.”

“Your father was the most honorable man I’ve ever known,” Knowles said.

“So sorry this has rather ruined your Christmas. You must come with Perry and me to Glenmont for Christmas. I know you usually go to Darnley.”

David sighed. “There’s a massive problem about Christmas.”

“What would that be?” Perry asked.

“I’ve gotten a posthumous letter from my father begging me to spend this last Christmas at Darnley.” He snatched up his glass and downed the rest of the dark liquid.

“Will the doxy be there?” Lord Finchley asked.

David shrugged. “I don’t actually know. I don’t even know why Papa insisted that I spend the Yule at Darnley, but how I can refuse this last request? As angry as I am, he was my father. And throughout my life, he was a very good father.”

“Oh, definitely. A very good father,” Lord Finchley agreed.

The two others nodded in agreement.

“I don’t understand how he could betray me like this. He knew how much Darnley meant to me.”

“He couldn’t very well give away Tonton Abbey. It’s been in your family for centuries,” Lord Finchley said.

“Not to mention it’s entailed,” Knowles added.

“Why did that conniving, depraved, fortune-seeking, low-class wench have to get any of our property?” David grabbed the decanter and poured out another glass of brandy.

“Perhaps,” Knowles suggested, “you can have the will broken.”

“I have certainly discussed that with our solicitor. While he believes Papa was of very sound mind, and all is in order with the will, with everything witnessed properly by our long-standing Darnley servants, he will comply with my wishes to try to contest it.”

“How?” Knowles asked.

“The solicitor is engaging a barrister to examine the situation at my behest.” David took a long swig. “I also feel betrayed by our Darnley servants.  I would have trusted them with my very life.”

Knowles shrugged. “All they did was obey your father’s request to witness the will. Perhaps you’re being too harsh on them.”

“Rotten luck, old fellow,” Lord Finchley said.

The two others nodded in unison.

“What if you’re forced to spend Christmas with that . . . that harlot?” Knowles asked.

David’s mouth thinned almost to a grimace. “I almost relish the prospect. I assure you I’ll take away everything that’s not nailed to the house. And you can be assured every animal in that stable will be moved to the stables at Tonton. She’ll get none of my possessions!”

“Such a dreary Christmas, old fellow.” Lord Finchley patted him sympathetically.
